Walking with a Ghost - Chapter Six

“You’re the only reason I got this far," Yang says faintly. This time, her eyes are wide open, and she’s smiling, smiling in the dark.

"Can you even believe everything that's happened to us?" she asks in wonder. "The universe must have seriously wanted us to be together somehow.”

Blake tries to smile, to laugh. She does it for Yang, who's looking at her pleadingly, asking for at least one moment of normalcy before it all falls apart again.

"Maybe," Blake says, managing a weak grin. “It’s either that or Weiss was really hoping I wouldn’t die alone.”

“Oh, that's crazy,” Yang tells her in exasperation. “You're not going to die alone. Someone else is going to scoop you right up.”

It's meant to be a compliment, or a joke, probably. But Blake doesn't smile and Yang doesn't notice. 

“What if I still want it to be you?” Blake asks.

There are many things Weiss has been dreading in Atlas, but somehow it all leads up to here, to this moment where her father stands before her. His eyes are narrowed, and his back is straight. 

He raises his hand again, and Weiss looks away, bracing for the pain.

Instead, she hears a voice.

“Don’t touch her.” 

The words cut in, echoing through the dark. A figure sweeps into the room and Weiss can feel someone stand in between them. She opens her eyes in a daze. 

Weiss doesn’t understand, because she recognizes everything about Ruby Rose, the swishing sound of Crescent Rose, the scent of her rose petals, a glimpse of her dark hair. 

Except, what she sees in her eyes is a look of disgust, a kind that Weiss has never known. Because Ruby doesn’t get mad. Ruby gets frustrated, and annoyed, and tired, but she never gets angry.

“I said don’t you dare touch her,” Ruby warns him again. And Weiss watches as Ruby’s fingers tighten around her scythe. She sees her father take a step back, alarmed and furious.

It doesn’t even matter what he’s yelling at her, what sort of threats he’s making this time. For once, Weiss doesn’t need to hear what he has to say. She knows that he doesn’t truly care about her. It’s just too easy to forget, when she’s alone with him in this empty house. It’s as if she’s eight years old again, looking up at the man who’s back to her was always turned.

There are footsteps now, storming off into the opposite direction. The place falls silent, and Weiss wants a second more of it to herself, to not remember.

“Weiss,” Ruby says at last. Her voice goes suddenly quiet. She reaches for her hand, holds it, and squeezes it tight. “Are you okay?”

She can’t answer that, not yet. Weiss looks up at Ruby, wondering what she’ll see, wondering if it’ll be the same expression of sadness and pity she’s grown used to. Then all she sees is a look of love, of comfort and relief.

She thinks maybe she doesn’t need anything else. She’s been working her whole life to prove her worth, but when it comes to Ruby, Weiss is stunned into silence. She’s reminded of how easy it is to just be herself.

Because Ruby doesn’t expect more from her. Because Ruby loves her for what she is.

“I’m okay,” Weiss says, with a faint smile. “Thank you, Ruby.”

Thank you for being there for me.

I’m okay.

I’m always okay when I’m here with you.
