Best of 2023- Best of the Best

One Piece Live Action

What? Me picking One Piece for anything best of the best related. I surprised myself. I’ve never seen an episode of the anime (on my own, I have watched a couple here and there just because my boyfriend is obsessed) but I was interested in watching the live action, especially after hearing all the good stuff about it and I’m glad I did.

For starters, it looked great. Production wise it was beautiful. It was playful, colorful, and whimsical without looking ridiculous or unbelievable. It just added character, haha.

Then talking about the characters they were also loads of fun. There’s just someone for everyone. Do you like the goofy yet well meaning leader, the actual brains of the operation, the cool silent type, the comedy relief, the wanna be suave one, there’s plenty to pick. There’s also many side characters or even villains/antagonists for you to pick.

I liked that every main character had their time to shine. They were able to cover everyone’s backstories while keeping the current storyline moving. And, you know I like myself a good backstory. Even the characters you’re not supposed to like per se have some sort of charm (Buggy) or understanding (Arlong). Not that they have an understanding but as in I have an understanding at to why he might do the things he does.

It’s a very character driven show (from what I gather anyways). So, my personal favorites were Usopp because he just always managed to make me laugh and I also had a soft spot for Coby because he was good boy.

I just really enjoyed it more than I thought I was going to. So much so that I saw it twice, once in español. (My mom’s primary language is Spanish and I showed it to her because I knew she’d liked it. She thought it was a bit weird because she didn’t know it was based on an anime but she enjoyed just as much).

Best of 2023-Best Couple

Lois and Clark-Superman and Lois

When thinking about comic book couples there are a few that come to mind. There’s Peter and Mary Jane, Iris and Barry, Jean and Cyclopes (even though that one has turned out weird but I always remember it) but there’s no couple more stable Lois and Clark. That’s why my pick for best couple goes to Lois and Clark from Superman and Lois.

For starters, the name of the series itself demonstrates how important both are in general and to each other. Season 3 especially showed how much of a power couple they are when they were challenged with one of their biggest problems and it wasn’t even a Superman one. Lois was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a very human issue that made Clark feel at loss because for once there was nothing he could do, nothing but be there for her. He was there to support her every step of the way even if he did have to sneak out of chemo for a while to deal with some stuff.

Honestly, Lois wasn’t the best patient. She continued to be stubborn and tenacious, especially at beginning when she was going through a bit of denial. Then, in true Lois fashion she actually worked a case that helped Superman take down a villain while in therapy because of course she chose the cancer center owned by the bad guy on purpose.

They just always have each others back whether it’s something human, something super, or just getting their kids in line because Jordan was being an ass this season but that’s different topic all together, haha. It’s nice to see a couple actually—be a couple. It’s not the just the process of getting them together like many other series but actually the work that goes behind it once they are. This is a married couple with ups and downs, struggles and fights but they work through it all.

Best of 2023-Best Group

The Crew of Revenge- Our Flag Means Death

My pick for best group is the idiot crew of the revenge. Why? Because they may be idiots but they care. They’re not the best pirates but they could be the best of friends. When the group was split up they still worried about where the other half was and if they were okay.

Meanwhile, the different halves that remained together continued to look out for each other. The group with Stede stuck close as they were stranded without a ship, as they escaped Spanish Jackie, as they got taken by another pirate crew, and finally as they escaped them too. The group with Blackbeard as he was going through his depression spiral was going through pretty traumatizing things and made sure to talk things through so they wouldn’t completely lose it. Izzy even got shot and lost his leg from covering the crew from Blackbeard’s crazed stupor.

When they got back together the Stede group, noticing others were a little worse for wear they quickly began plans to show them some fun, that they were important, and that they were now on a safe space ship, I mean a safe space that’s on ship. The crew went through so much from PTSD to curses, to joining forces with others to fight the British, to having one of theirs not make it. But, though it all they never stopped being there for each other, even if one turned into a bird.

I just love the group so much and I'm so sad that won't be getting more of them.

Best of 2023-Best Worst Person

Honorable Mention - Suwa Shigeki - Buddy Daddies.

I was having a really tough time with this one and kept going back and forward between making him worse or not. He is Rei’s dad, the head of the organization and a stone cold hitman through and through. He doesn’t care what it takes and shows no mercy for anyone and anything. His own son has to refer to him as boss instead of father because Shigeki raised Rei just as a successor instead of a son. He resorted to neglect and abuse even forcing Rei to shot his dog so he could learn to be has heartless as he is. It didn’t work obviously but that didn’t stop Shigeki from also putting a hit out for Rei’s little family because they got in the way or Rei’s work in the organization. He was the big bad of Buddy Daddies and was really close to making it best.

Winner- Millions Knives-Trigun Stampede

My winner for best worst actually goes to Millions Knives from Trigun Stampede. I ended up picking him mostly because of genocide. Knives is a very interesting and complex character/villain because he actually is sympathetic. He has a tragic past and you can understand the anger he feels.

He is a plant that was practically raised by humans alongside his brother when they were found. Knives quickly began seeing humans as parasites of sorts that simply uses up resources and takes advantage of plants. What really pushed him over the edge was when he finds a plant being used to the last of their power, thus dying. Seeing the actions of these humans causes him to quickly taking down the ship and killing all those in it besides him and his brother. He then begins to use his abilities to try to kill all humans.

While Vash also disagrees with how humans treat plants he doesn’t believe in committing genocides and has come to love humans for their own flawed natural. Knives on the other hand doesn’t take it as only a few bad seeds but that all humans are bad.  Vash and Knives are constantly trying to drive their points to each other as they fight but Knives has no problem using his brother. He does care for his brother but when they were fighting and Vash refused to join him he forcefully uses him, to the point of invading his mind. He also has no qualms about using his plants himself, making him a hypocrite.

So, while you can understand where’s he’s coming from but that no way justifies the complete destruction of towns and genocide of people.

Best of 2023-Best Employee

Rengoku Kyōjurō - Demon Slayer

Rengoku is considered one of the strongest members of the Hashira. He’s an expert at flame breathing. He’s cheerful, enthusiastic and charismatic. He seems very silly or even weird (eccentric) at times but underneath it all he takes his role very seriously. He’s an honorable fighter with a strong moral core and principles he’s dedicated to follow. He believes that anyone who is born with any sort of strength has a responsibility to protect those that are weaker. In fact one of his own weakness is looking out for others while disregarding his own safety. He’s a logical, tactical fighter while also being optimistic about life and others. He believes if you try hard you can achieve your dreams (as he tells Tanjiro) and accepts Nezuko as a Demon Slayer despite being a demon when he witnessed her helping people.

During the second season (which takes place on a train) the train gets possessed by a demon that hypnotizes those on it to the. Have their dreams manipulated to eventually get killed. He does eventually wake up and helps Tanjiro who is already fighting when another demon appears. Taking over the fight as Tanjiro is very hurt by then, only alive due to Rengoku performing some healing breathing to patch him up in the meantime. The fight goes on for a long time as this was a higher rank demon but Rengoku never relents, knowing that he needs to continue to save the people in the train. Though he does fight hard it’s just too much and he gets injured far beyond anything he can come back on. He died fending the demon off until sunrise while continually refusing to join their ranks. I chose him for best employee because of his commitment to the hashira and to the people he vowed to protect. He fought to the end to defend the innocent even when it cost him his life.

Best of 2023-Best Female

Unasaka Miri- Buddy Daddies

This little girl right here has been through so much for only being 4 years old. She had to see her mother struggle, working at a sleazy bar among other things. She was brave enough to travel miles away in sure of a father she’s never know to only have him be killed on Christmas Eve (Not that she noticed but still). She had to learn to live with these two new strangers and a new school where the kids picked on her.

Even though she liked her new life and she did eventually become friends with the school kids she still missed her mom. To make matters worse when she does go back to mother, she’s sad about not being able to see her dads and her friends anymore. Then on top of that, she eventually loses her mother for good and they have to move to a completely new city. She just went through so much in her very short life. She was too young to understand what happening and why so it left her confused, scared, and sad. But, after everything she toughed it out and took it all in stride to grow up to be a very nice and responsible teenager that took care of her daddies.

Best of 2023-Best Male

Laszlo Cravensworth-What we do in the Shadows

My pick for best male is Laszlo Cravensworth from WWDITS. This is the third year in a row that Laszlo has made it on my list. When I was watching WWDITS during season 5 I said, I don’t even need a specific category for him; he just deserves to be best male. So, he finally did. Because, if you told me that at the beginning of the series that this hot mess of a vampire would be one of my favorite characters I wouldn’t have believed you, but he is. He is without a doubt the vampire most in touch with his human side. I read an article once that referred to him as the human soul of the gang and I couldn’t have said it any better.

He has demonstrated more human kindness then the humans (Though technically Guillermo was a vampire for most of the season). We knew that Laszlo had it in him to be nice to the people he cares for. From the way he treats his wife, his best friend, Nandor (even when doesn’t deserve it), to basically becoming Colin Robinson’s father in season 4, but the way he was there for Guillermo was nothing but heartwarming. You can practically see the shift in his expression when Guillermo confesses what he’s done. This lowly familiar he can’t remember the name of. Despite committing one of the biggest transgressions in vampire culture, Laszlo decides to be there for him. He immediately goes into dad/scientist mode and begins to try to find a solution.

He keeps Guillermo’s secret and defended him when Nandor found out. And finally, what solidified my choice for making him my best male was how he took Derek to the necromancer after they killed him. He knew Guillermo felt guilty and it gave Derek a second chance at being undead. He is the heart of the series while also being the guy that sits for days just to decide how he want to organize his books. How could I pick anyone better?

Best of 2023-Best Frenemies

Bakugou Katsuki & Midoriya Izuku -My Hero Academia

My pick for best frenemies goes to Bakugou Katsuki and Midoriya Izuku from My Hero Academia. They were my pick because…well, is there anyone better? They’re basically the textbook example of frenemies, especially during season 6. Are they friends? Not exactly. Are they enemies? Not really.  That’s just the weird complex relationship they have. They’re neither yet both. They don’t always get along, far from it but they know that at the end of the day they do still have each other’s back. The enemy part of frenemy was for the most part one sided with Bakugou just not letting up. However, with season 6 from Bakugou jumping in front of Deku to take a hit to Bakugou apologizing, a clear shift was made.

When Deku was out doing his dark vigilante stuff Bakugou was there angry and ready to beat him up like he always is but this time because of the fact that Deku was wandering off alone. Now, it was Deku trying to be a loner. Even when their relationship was at its worst I think deep down they knew they were there for each other. It’ll be even more so now. They started out as friends when they were young, going to almost enemies to where they stand now, the weird limbo between of the both.

Best of the Best- Our Flag Means Death

This was probably one of the toughest best of the best I’ve had in a while. I don’t think I had anything that was really shouting at me like “Oh yeah! That’s the winner right there.” That’s why I had my long list of honorable mentions again. Pokémon was actually the front runner for a while. I figured it had taken most of my time and attention. The Walking Dead really wasn’t ever a thought for best I just knew I wanted to honor them for it being the last season.

After much pondering and staring at my list of things that I had watched, the list being much longer than what was shown here I had finally made my decision. The winner was going to be Our Flag Means Death. Why, you ask? Honestly, the deciding factor was because when I was staring at my list and typing out the blurb for one of the other categories I decided to watch a few episodes of it again. I’m kind of bad at rewatching things but this was a show I found easy to do. The episodes crack me up so I just want to keep going. I also enjoying watching random clips on YouTube about the different characters like Frenchie’s (my favorite pirate) greatest hits or OFMD with no context, they’re super fun to watch.

Also, besides the main character of Stede, it has such a great ensemble cast for you to latch onto. They’re all special and quirky in their own way, even Blackbeard and his identify crisis he’s going through. There’s someone for everyone. Do you like eccentric Scottish dude with a bird or the Swede that’s losing his teeth from scurvy or the cook that doubles as the doctor or the only crewmember with a brain cell that can read but that also leaves you questioning why exactly they are a pirate or a dude that’s a really a not a dude that’s hiding out because they killed someone? There’s just so many characters to love or hate.

I also picked it because it kept me wanting more. The season was just too short. It was left with such a cliffhanger with everyone scattered through the wind. Some on the ship, some in a boat, some on an island and some possibly dead. It just kept me wondering what was going to happen next. So, now I just have to wait here and see when the next season comes out. That's why it eventually won best of best.

Oh, I also have a thing for pirates.

Best of the Best 2022

Honorable Mention

Time for a long list of honorable mentions because I’m bad at picking. They’re really in no particular order but I did want to honor The Walking Dead first for it being their last season.

So, The Walking Dead was such a wild ride from start to finish. I know I didn’t start watching when it first started and I know I skipped season 8 because I didn’t want to deal with Carl dying because I was upset about it but overall it was still enjoyable. You really learned to quickly care for the characters because you never knew who was going to stick around and who was going to end up dying. I was invested in their lives and how they were going to survive especially the ones that had been there the longest. When they announced that it was ending it was big surprise. I immediately wondered what was going to happen to them and I just gotta say that I was very satisfied with how it ended. It wasn’t tied off with a bow or anything. That would be hard to do with this type of show. Yet, it did give the characters good endings even if some were bittersweet or just plan sad because there were some causality in the final battle. That was sadly to be expected, of course. But yes, overall it was left open ended with hopes for tomorrow because they were the ones who live.

These vampires, man…oh and familiar they are just a hoot. I always look forward to see what shenanigans they get into.

Oh Ash and gang…they are just a hoot. I always look forward to see what shenanigans they get into. Really though, like I said during best protagonist I’m here for my boy Ash so I do enjoy just watching him in his journey and I’m going to miss Brock so so so so so so so so much.

Season 5 of My Hero Academia was nice and all but, I feel like it definitely suffered from some pacing issues. This season I’m enjoying much more but because it just started right before the new year I feel like it’s something I just need to keep in my pocket for possible use next year.

I surprisingly really enjoy this. I find the future part with the whole president thing weird and kind of annoying but I really like the actual history parts of him growing up.  Is it because I’ve been on a big wrestling kick despite never actually watching wrestling, who knows?

It was nice seeing Hawkeye get some love.
