The other day, I decided to practice flowers and oil pastels. I picked a tulip for this study because, when I started drawing plants, tulips were some of the first flowers I managed to depict properly.

A couple of days later, I decided to try my hand at water soluble oils and I thought it could be fun to use the same reference for that study. I forgot to prime my paper, though, so the paint got sucked into it as soon as I laid it down.

I am a sucker for symbols and looked into the meaning of tulips. If you are interested, here’s what I learned. Apparently, the tulip is the flower of Spring or the herb of the Moon. Tulips can represent the perfect lover, a declaration of love, imagination and dreaminess, prosperity and rarity, or passion. From what I read, the meaning attached to the flower also depends on its colour (red for passion, white for purity, etc.).
I am still looking for good resources regarding plant symbolism. The ones I found did not really give details as to why certain meanings were attached to a particular plant, which I found kind of frustrating. If you know a good book or website on this topic, please let me know!

Some sketches I did recently.
1_watercolour pencils, coloured pencils and oil pastels
2_pencil, gouache and acrylic markers
3_watercolour pencils and coloured pencils
As you can see, the paper in this particular sketchbook does not take water very well.

Today’s palette, also known as “Extreme frustration”. Every attempt at painting has been met with utter failure these days. Sometimes, that’s just how things are. All you have to do is keep at it. Eventually, this too shall pass.

Last week, I got sick. Instead of getting some rest, I decided to push it and tried to get things done.
Of course, any attempt at portrait sketching failed miserably. That’s when I thought about drawing rabbits. I have no idea why I picked rabbits (Frustration? Maybe, fever? Or a lack of oxygen getting to my brain because of a stuffy nose?). In the end, these little sketches satisfied me enough that I could call it a day.
I used a grease marker to draw the rabbits. It was the first time I used this kind of pencil and I liked the feel of it and the end result. The only thing that got to me is the “peeling” of the pencil. It is either the most rewarding thing in the world or the most frustrating one. When it flows, it flows. When it breaks, I just grab my utility knife and try not to get too angry.

A nice little painting I did some time ago. I really like how it turned out. It’s what I had in mind and, at the same time, not what I had in mind.

The need for light and warmth is still there. As it’s still winter here, I suppose I’ll have to accept that, for now, these things will only manifest themselves in paintings. Anyway, now that we’re in January, I suppose that summer is just around the corner.
Happy 2024 everyone!
Oil on paper, 12x9 inches. (I fought with the paper on this one but the result is quite close to what I wanted)

I am quite happy with this one. I’ll probably try another one with slight changes before deciding on a final version. But that will be in 2024.

L’équipe Tumblr reblogged one of my posts today, so I thought I’d show you what one of the sketches looked like once completed.
Thank you very much @equipe for the reblog, it really was a pleasant surprise when I got up today!
Oil on paper 6x6 inches.
