Did Umehara say who he originally tried out for? Or just that he tried out for someone else?

I have not been able to find an interview where he says who he originally tried out for yet!

It is not uncommon for the seiyuu to mention that they actually tried out for other characters, but whenever the topic comes up they usually temper the question with, "You don't have to say who you auditioned for if you'd rather not," so I think it can be something of a delicate topic in the industry for seiyuu to discuss who they lost roles to.

Epel's VA Tsuchiya also says that he did not audition for Epel!

In the following video he explains that he auditioned for many characters but he'd actually wanted to voice a character in Savanaclaw, because he was named after Simba from The Lion King.

At Anime Japan 2019's Twisted Wonderland stage, we learned that:

・Ace's Yamashita auditioned for both Deuce and Ace

・Deuce's Kobayashi auditioned for both Deuce and Ace

・Trey's Suzuki auditioned for both Trey and Deuce

・Cater's Kobayashi auditioned both for Cater and for another character but he does not specify who, as the game had yet to be released and only the members of Heartslabyul and Malleus had been revealed.

While the video cannot be shared because of ABEMA restrictions, during Twst Channel's first Halloween livestream we learned that Crewel's Ito also auditioned for someone else, and was later offered Crewel, instead!

While I have not yet been able to find Leona's Umehara confirming what character he did audition for I personally suspected it might have been Malleus, but in a special appearance of Malleus' VA Kato on Lilia's Midorikawa's monthly livestream he said that not only did he not audition for Malleus, but Malleus wasn't even an option amongst the characters that were available!

Malleus' Kato also does not share what character(s) he originally auditioned for.

It is interesting that Malleus, Leona, Epel and Crewel were all offered directly to VAs that did not audition for them.

Bonus:

During the first Halloween edition of Twst Channel the seiyuu were asked who, if anyone, was their oshi character outside of the character they themselves voice. Here are the results!

・Jack's VA -> Epel oshi ・Ruggie's VA -> Idia and Sebek oshi ・Sebek's VA -> Malleus oshi ・Silver's VA -> Idia oshi (It is well known that Silver's VA Shimazaki adores Idia, to the point that Ruggie's VA apologizes to him for also having Idia as an oshi character)

The Reason Why Golden Cicada was Banished from Heaven

Someone asked me a question about this fairly recently, but my answer appears to have been deleted. Anyway, I thought I would answer it again. In short, Master Golden Cicada (Jin chanzi, 金蟬子) fell asleep during the Buddha's sermon. But chapter 81 adds to the reason: accidentally kicking something and causing a single grain of rice to fall. This is explained while Tripitaka is deathly ill for a few days:

“You don’t realize that Master was the second disciple of our Buddha Tathagata, and originally he was called Elder Gold Cicada. Because he slighted the Law, he was fated to experience this great ordeal.” “Elder Brother,” said Eight Rules, […] “Why must he endure sickness [for two days] as well?” “You wouldn’t know about this,” replied Pilgrim. “Our old master fell asleep while listening to Buddha expounding the Law. As he slumped to one side, his left foot kicked down one grain of rice. That is why he is fated to suffer three days’ illness after he has arrived at the Region Below.” Horrified, Eight Rules said, “The way old Hog sprays and splatters things all over when he eats, I wonder how many years of illness I’d have to go through!” “Brother,” said Pilgrim, “you have no idea either that the Buddha is not that concerned with you and other creatures. But as people say: Rice stalks planted in noonday sun Take root as perspiration runs. Who knows of this food from the soil Each grain requires most bitter toil? "この日は中国でのスケジュールを終え、日本に戻ってきてのリハーサルとなったチェン！スタッフやバンドメンバーからの「おかえりなさ～い！」という出迎えに「ただいま～！」と大きな声で応えながらスタジオに入りました^^

休憩時間には「お土産で～す！」と“日本の空港”で買ってきてくれたお土産を、みんなに配ってくれました(笑)♪そして「みなさんにお土産を買いたかったんですけど、時間がなかったから日本の空港で買いました(笑)」と話すチェンに、スタジオはいつもに増して和やかな雰囲気に^^そんな風にいつも周りを気づかってくれる優しいチェンからのお土産を、バンドメンバーやスタッフみんなで美味しくいただきました^^

また、リハーサルも後半となったこの日、「バンドメンバーに伝えたいことがあります！」とチェン。「みなさん、すごく良いです！みなさんのかっこいい才能や魅力も、遠慮せずにおもいっきり出し切ってくださいね^^みなさん、最高です！」とバンドメンバーへの尊敬の気持ちを伝えていました。"

Translation: "After his schedules in China, Chen made his way back to Japan to resume rehearsals! The staff and band greeted him when he entered the studio with a warm, ‘welcome baaa~ck!’ to which Chen replied in a loud voice, ‘It’s good to be back~~!’^^

During one of the breaks, Chen announced, ‘I got everyone souvenirs!’ and then proceeded to hand out things he had bought at the airport in Japan (hehe).♪ He added, ‘I wanted to get something for everyone, but I didn’t have enough time so I just stopped at one of the shops in the airport (hehe)’. Q: Do you have any tips for remembering the Japanese lyrics to your songs? A: Well, first off, I start memorising each of the words from the first measure. To make sure I can transition between each section naturally I also memorise the meaning of the lyrics. This isn't a failproof method though and I still encounter difficulties. (hehe)

Q: Do you have a special vocal care routine to keep your throat and voice healthy during the tour? A: In the past I used to use a spray to keep my throat from drying out, but nowadays I just drink more water. I find that when I'm on tour and singing a lot, I don't drink as much coffee as usual, either. I typically drink about two cups a day, but ever since I've begun preparing for this tour I haven't had a single cup!

I understand that in the book there is a lot of mention of gods and demons (or evil spirits I think), such as the bull demon king, scorpion demoness, white bone demon, the great yellow eyebrow king (I think that's his name and one of the few demons that really caused Sun Wukong a lot of trouble), among many others

But my question is... How do the different types of demons arise there? (Of course, except for the ones that are gods and immortals that were expelled/exiled from heaven, I understand that's one way, right?)

Yes, being expelled from heaven is one way to become a demon. This article explains how having a place within the cosmic hierarchy (i.e. a position in heaven) is what normally separates a god from a demon.

Most of the demons in JTTW are animals who became spirits through Daoist spiritual practices. Sun Wukong is a prime example of this.

Then you have the kind that were simply born into demonhood. The White Bone Spirit falls into this category. Chapter 27 explains:

In this mountain there was indeed a monster-spirit, who was disturbed by the Great Sage Sun's departure. Treading dark wind, she came through the clouds and found the elder sitting on the ground. "What luck! What luck!" she said, unable to contain her delight. "For several years my relatives have been talking about a Tang Monk from the Land of the East going to fetch the Great Vehicle (emphasis added). He is actually the incarnation of the Gold Cicada, and he has the original body that has gone through the process of self-cultivation during ten previous existences. If a man eats a piece of his flesh, his age will be immeasurably lengthened. So, this monk has at last arrived today!" (Wu & Yu, vol. 2, p. 17) 果然這山上有一個妖精，孫大聖去時，驚動那怪。他在雲端裡踏著陰風，看見長老坐在地下，就不勝歡喜道：「造化，造化。幾年家人都講東土的唐和尚取大乘，他本是金蟬子化身，十世修行的原體，有人吃他一塊肉，長壽長生。真個今日到了。」
