It feels like such an unpopular opinion these days but I'd much rather a story take a big swing and miss than just be a tepid, lightly-tread path. I'd much rather writers take big risks, play with expectations, subvert tropes and ultimately maybe fail a little bit than have this constant stream of content that can be summed up in trite soundbites or carved up into 30 second clips.

My one serious gripe with Gyeongseong Creature is that there are two different languages being spoken in this show, and the subtitles are doing nothing to indicate that. This is a story set during the Japanese occupation of Korea. There are both Japanese and Korean characters and they constantly code switch between languages to indicate status, class, and true loyalties. Sometimes the switches are subtle and fast, and if your ear is not well-trained enough in the differences between Korean and Japanese you can easily miss it. This is relevant for both character and plot, so it’s a pretty egregious oversight from Netflix.

We cannot help but be interested in the stories of people that history pushes aside so thoughtlessly.

Some custom bookmarks I designed for a book group to show their 2023 reads!
This was a fun, different kind of commission, and it taught me that every online printing company is rubbish except my usual one. Due to my usual printer being closed over Christmas, I had to use a different company to get these in time and had terrible experiences with 3 different places, all due to lack of knowledge and poor quality control.
I ended up getting a rush order from the usual company as soon as they reopened, the lesson is probably that if somewhere gives their employees a proper break during public holidays, they’re probably a better company overall. Also meant I didn’t actually end up making any money from this one, but it was fun to do 😅 I know for next time.

I like it when it’s foggy. When you can’t see into the distance. When there’s no horizon. It gives me a feeling of having time. That it’s all right not to see, not to be aware of what’s in my path.
