Bob's Burgers: Fraud of the Dead: Zombie-docu-pocalypse (14x09)
Okay... this had to have been an episode planned for closer to the end of October, right? So weird how the episodes have been scheduled!
Cons:
Nothing much to complain about, this was great spooky ridiculous fun! The one thing that was a little odd was that the conceit of this scenario is that Gene and Tina don't know Louise, that they are just a documentary crew, and then there were times later in the episode where they continued to reference that they don't know each other. Like, at the end, Tina calls Bob and Linda "your parents" when talking to Louise, as if she's still being the documentary crew and not herself. That feels like a bit of a muddled premise to me, I would have loved to do a bit more with it.
Pros:
On the other hand, maybe I should eat my words and say that the muddled premise ultimately added to the comedy: I love how high-concept Louise's idea for a movie was, that it starts off as a documentary and then becomes about a zombie apocalypse, so the artifice is that it's a project that gets interrupted by something and that becomes the focus. The end scene with the family reacting was a great capstone, because suddenly when you realize that Louise actually wrote and produced this whole thing, the scope and talent on display is kind of crazy. She got her whole family and so many other people involved, and did it all with nothing other than a couple of cameras being held by her siblings, who also had acting roles in the story.
There are certain things that become more funny when you realize that this whole thing is in fact scripted, like Bob being really reluctant to disassemble the restaurant, but then caving to it because... "this is a zombie apocalypse..." or Linda telling the kids when they go upstairs on their own to keep filming the movie while they hold off the zombies downstairs, "don't go in my room".
I also loved the dedication of Andy, Ollie, Jimmy Jr., Rudy, Mort, and Teddy in their performances, it was so fun to see them all go full-tilt and support Louise in her creative endeavor. There's something honestly heartwarming about this scenario, because it's so ridiculous but we get to see how much of a community these people have built; they'll all show up for each other to help with creativity and fun.
A few stand-out jokes for me:
Rudy saying "it's okay" and "I don't want to be remembered as a complainer" as he's being eaten by zombies was so funny and so in character. It made me wonder if Louise had written that line for him because she knows Rudy so well, or if that was improv on his part.
Same with Tina talking about editing techniques and her "vision" for the project as she realizes she's probably about to be eaten. Is that Tina's artistic integrity, or Louise's writing for how Tina's documentary film crew character would speak? I love the ambiguity of that.
The song was another comedy highlight for me; the meta jokes where Tina asks Louise why she's singing in this documentary, and then the song getting cut off... the fact that this was a joke that Louise wrote into her movie in-universe, as part of her character arc regarding learning how to be an archer... it's all so funny and cute.
I love Louise, so no surprise an episode like this, where she gets to be her zany, creative self, and also go through a bit of a journey of self-discovery, really works for me!

Destiel Chronicles
Vol. CXIV
It was a love story from the very beginning.
Dean's Emotional Prison (Part I)
(14x09, 14x10)
Hi my friends! Another meta from season 14, this time I will try to disect mostly episode 10, and Bucky's Bar, the symbolism in the visual Narrative and dialogues related to Dean's deepest desires.
You can find my metas from these episode here: X, X, X, X, X, X and X.
Drstiel Break up Foreshadow
Before talking about how glued were Castiel and Dean the whole episode 9 (Foreshadowing Michael's words at the end of the episode "He was attached to you... To all of you") let's talk about the broken tape deck.
Gif set credit @godshipsit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At first I thought this was talking about how comfortable they felt with the silence but then... In retrospective, it was another foreshafow for the Drstiel break up, if you related it with the mixtape, a Destiel icon.
Another take from this episode was the amount of lies and the silence, keeping the truth out of sign.
DEAN: We got -- We got Jack back. When was the last time we had a big, no-strings-attached win like that?
Do you remember Castiel's face here? Not talking about his deal with the Empty?
Also, I noticed something Dean did...
You know there's a thing in Medicine called "Exit Problem" is when you were with your patient, made the anamnesis, made the physical exam, and then, after half an hour of consult, you open the door bc you are about to say goodbye see you in the next contr and the patient goes with... "Oh, yeah, btw, I was coughing blood all the week too..."
Dean did this with Cas before entering the place...
Gif set credit @jensenackles-daily
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was part of the honest talk they needed to have. Just a piece in which we saw Dean understanding what Sam and Castiel went through when they were possessed.
Touching
Not only the talk, but the moves from Dean to Castiel, as I predicted it in 14x06.
This pic over here:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
The whole season was full of Dean and Castiel glued to each other, more than in season 13.
I linked these touchings to the moves. Dean was trying to approach Cas physically. Showing him signs.
The Lies
The episode was full of text and symbolism about lies hidden truths.
Gif credit @angvlicmish
Tumblr media
Look at Castiel here, asking Jack to keep the secret. This was a cute symbolism that sealed their chat about why Castiel was hidden the truth about the Empty to the Winchester's brothers. But we had another secret between Jack and Castiel about eating choco cereal at night.
Then we had Garth acting like a spy in Michael's Forces and also, the scene with Kaia.
Gif credit @inacatastrophicmind
Tumblr media
The dialogues are pointing to lies and hidden secrets again. Dean will lie here about Jack's powers to get the spear.
Gif credit @inacatastrophicmind
Tumblr media
Again, another piece of dialogue between Castiel and AUKaia.
Why was this episode so insistent into talk about lies? Because it was another foreshafow of Jack cancelling all lies in the world at the end of the season.
The Big Liar
The big Liar at the end of the episode was Michael, who was hidden somehow and never cut the link between him and Dean. Spying the TFW (just like Garth) and possessing Dean again. But this time he know what to do. This time he will have Dean under control by locking him down inside his own Emotional Prison (Rocky's Bar).
Michael explains he needed to break Dean, to make him believe he had won. Because he was attached to his family.
To Conclude:
This episode talked about lies, as a preamble to Dean's second Possession and his lock down inside his own Emotional Prison, a big lie built by himself.
Hope you liked this meta, see you in the next one!

Castiel’s spiked up hair
Tumblr media
Spn 14x09
I had thought Castiel had left his hair the same way Jimmy Novak had styled it. Because Castiel seems completely indifferent to physical appearance. But Jimmy never styled it up like Castiel usually does, so...
Castiel chose to make his vessel’s hairstyle like Dean’s.
Here is Jimmy Novak before becoming Castiel’s vessel.
Tumblr media
Spn 4x20
Jimmy Novak’s hair wasn’t spiked up. He swept his hair to one side. And...
Jimmy’s wife Amelia also swept her hair to one side.
Even if unintentional, it’s easy to imagine given 15x18 that Castiel was already crushing on the human he pulled from Hell before meeting him in a vessel. So prior to Dean summoning him he ditches Jimmy’s wedding band (x), and he decides to spike his vessel’s hair up to match Dean.
Castiel had seen Jimmy and Amelia part their hair the same, so maybe...
Castiel figures that matching hairstyles is a way for humans to show they have a bond together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(x) by @shirtlesssammy |Spn 4x07|
And when Castiel lost all his memories and forgot about Dean. He picked the name Emmanuel, and he didn’t spike his hair up.
Without knowing Dean, Castiel chose a different way of styling his hair.
Tumblr media
Spn 7x17
The next time Dean and Cas meet his hair is spiked up again. Crazy!Castiel would follow bees on their routes between flowers, run from conflict, and make fart jokes. Despite all of that, he still made sure to spike up his vessel’s hair before Dean arrived at the hospital.
Tumblr media
Spn 7x21
And Apocalypse Universe Castiel also never bothered to spike his hair up while using Jimmy Novak as a vessel.
Tumblr media
Spn 13x22
The one Castiel that was different in all the multiverses, thought it would be sexy to have matching hairstyles with the righteous man he met in Hell.
In summary
Cas was in love with Dean, and Dean was his role model for humanity. So when trying to figure out how to wear his vessel’s hair, Castiel was sure that nothing could be sexier than copying Dean’s look.
Bonus: more Jimmy & Amelia Novak

Just a reminder that last season everybody got to explore a version of manufactured happiness. Everyone except Cas.
Jack was in heaven, living out the memory of their trip to Dodge City after Cas came back and he got to see Dean happy for the first time.
Sam in 14x15 when he fell under the Mayor’s spell and got to live the white picket suburban life that he’s often dreamed about.
And Dean, when Michael trapped him in the place he thought would make him happy, a bar in his own mind.
None of it was real, but they all got to experience a sense of happiness nonetheless. But Cas didn’t. And it’s not like it was just an oversight. What would it take to make Cas happy was an important question that was brought up last season. So important, in fact, that his fate was tied to it.
The Entity vowed to take him the moment he allowed himself to be happy:
I want you to go back to-- to your normal life and-- and then forget about this and forget about me. And-- And then, when you finally give yourself permission to be happy and let the sun shine on your face, that's when I'll come. That's when I'll come to drag you to nothing.
I think it’s interesting that the Entity repeatedly emphasised that it would come for Cas after he had forgotten about the deal, and that (unless I’m forgetting another reference - feel free to correct me if I am) the last time the deal was mentioned was in 14x09:
Cas: You know, the Empty said that it wouldn't come for me until I had finally given myself permission to be happy, but with everything we have going on, with -- with Michael still out there, I don't see that happening anytime soon. This life may be a lot of things, but it's rarely happy.
Jack: I’m sorry.
I know things in the story were most likely changed after the announcement that s15 would be the last, and certain elements were potentially altered or rushed through. I mean I suppose that could be the case with Cas’ deal with The Empty. However I also can’t help myself from fixating on those other details.
Cas being the only main character to not experience any kind of happiness based simulation. What does he want? What would make him truly happy? What does happiness even look like for him? Those questions were never answered for Cas. And then on top of that, The Empty’s assertion that he would come after Cas had forgotten about him.
Cas isn’t going to be in the midseason premiere which is unusual and I can’t imagine that would be the case if there wasn’t a damn good reason. I’m interested to see why that is. Either way, I do think we’re finally going to get an answer to the question “What do you want?” for Cas this season.
(Sidenote if we’re going to go full symmetry on this, him being happy could come after everything’s ok and they’ve dealt with Michael - there is another Michael still out there after all - but that’s just wandering thoughts based on my love of poetic narratives and nothing more. I highly doubt we’re about to see Cas happy anytime over the next 2 episodes.)

The Kohonta, The Wendigo and... the Winchesters? Cannibalism in 14x16
The episode most recalled by 14x16 Don’t Go in the Woods (among several others) is, of course 1x02 Wendigo.
The Wendigo and the Kohonta are both, in the SPN universe, Native American legends/ creatures who were once human, but who eat people,  and who have been transformed into monsters and driven insane as a result of their cannibalism. They are also horrifying images of starvation - folklore tales made flesh, of what it is like to be so voraciously hungry in a hard, cold winter, that you would eat your relatives.
Wendigo 1x02
Tumblr media
Kohonta 14x16:
Tumblr media
That’s.... meant to sound an ominous note, given that Jack has recently consumed (cannibalised) his “uncle” AU!Michael’s grace in 14x14 Ouroboros:
Tumblr media
However, there has been so much Jack-goes-darkside foreshadowing that I think this is a bit of a feint on the part of the writers’ room, particularly as all the alchemical/ Jungian symbology Jack has been linked to (and functions as a mirror for, in relation to Dean, Cas and Sam’s psychological journeys) actually figures the Ouroboros as a positive symbol of transformation, through the integration of the self and the shadow-self. So, if we follow the symbolic logic of the narrative, Jack’s story will not end with him EVOL (he might wobble along the way though).
Nonetheless, the cannibalism metaphor is a very powerful one in 14x16, which deliberately recalls 1x02.
What does it symbolise, in Perez and Vaught’s narrative?
Firstly, toxicity in familial relationships - people metaphorically “cannibalising” one another, when they do not have good boundaries. That of course fits in with the “toxic codependency” reading of Sam and Dean’s (historical) relationship.
We can see that very early on, because it is one of the show’s foundational elements. Recall the “Previously” intro section to 1x02, which quotes 1x01 Pilot:
SAM: “I swore I was done hunting.”
In the Impala, CONSTANCE tries to rip SAM's heart out.
SAM: “For good.”
DEAN: “I can't do this alone.”
Constance ripping Sam’s heart out is cut in as a metaphor for Dean “devouring” Sam, because Dean’s co-dependent need for Sam pulled his brother back into hunting and that is a long-standing source of narrative tension between the brothers on SPN. By the end of Wendigo, Sam is, once again, pulled back in.
That toxicity (the origin story for which happened to the Winchesters when they were little kids, so this is not about “blaming” either of them for the roots of the thing) has evolved, as the brothers have grown, and, gradually and painfully (sometimes with major trips and steps backwards along the way, and with still some miles to go) they have been making progress at relating to each other in a healthier way.
That is strongly signalled in Don’t Go in the Woods whereby initially, Dean falls into an old Winchester pattern of, “Don’t communicate openly” and so lies to Jack about why they don’t want to take him with them on the hunt. Sam calls Dean out on that, at the end of the episode, after they have watched Sheriff Romero lie to his own son, with negative (near fatal) results. Dean listens to what Sam is telling him about communication, and they come back to the bunker and tell Jack (their adopted son) the truth. That’s progress!
Secrets and lies are like the Kohonta - they eat away at you like stomach acid.
The Winchesters grew up with secrets and lies. Poor little kid-Dean kept the fact that John hunted monsters from Sam (at John’s behest) for as long as he could, to try give Sam some sense of security and normality (A Very Supernatural Christmas 3x08). Don’t Go in the Woods shows Dean listening to an adult Sam and changing the pattern (yes, Sam has his own co-dependent patterns, and they are equally toxic, but they are not the focus in this episode).
The cannibalism of the Wendigo and the Kohonta also symbolise emotional hunger. These creatures are so alone and so desperately craving human flesh.
We can understand that as a narrative comment on Jack’s current plight. He so wants to make friends with Eliot, Stacy and Max, but by revealing his supernatural self, he terrifies them and they reject him.
In subtext, we might also read the hunger of the Kohonta as Dean’s romantic/ erotic hunger for Cas, and Cas’ romantic/ erotic hunger for Dean - which both of them feel, and yet both of them are terrified by.
The Dabb era narrative has already shown us Dean trying to lock himself in the Ma’lak box (closet) in 14x11 Damaged Goods and Castiel being taunted by The Shadow (his shadow-self) which tells him it knows who he loves but, “There is nothing for you back there” (on earth - i,e. - Cas believes he is not “wanted”) (13x04 The Big Empty). And witness, that at the start of 14x16 we learn that Cas has left the bunker and Dean is the one who knows he left (but doesn’t know why). No doubt Cas is off feeling angst-ridden about his big secret deal with The Shadow...
So this episode, Don’t Go in the Woods, about consuming hunger, is presaged by a Dean/ Cas separation.
Of course, Dean’s hunger for Cas and Cas’ hunger for Dean is not toxic or cannibalistic BUT, we might read the Kohonta as symbolising their fear that it is.
And it’s interesting that the face of the Kohonta looks a bit like the half-oozing face of The Shadow as it appears to Castiel in 14x09 The Spear (bearing in mind that The Shadow symbolises Castiel’s shadow-self - everything he has repressed or tries to repress, including his fear that his desire to love and be loved is an abomination):
Tumblr media
Finally, we can say that the Wendigo and the Kohonta are lost to the madness of cannibalism because they are alone.
The Winchesters (I include Cas and Jack) are not, and can (the message of the episode suggests) overcome toxicity (the psychic cannibalism of one another and themselves) by eschewing secrets and lies, and telling one another Chuck’s own truth.

So I’ve said on twitter -
One of the most devastating things for me at the moment is Dean’s accumulated trauma post-14x09. He thought everything was hunky-dory - he was happy - until Michael came and snatched the proverbial rug from under him, the sleeper agent, just like that. Unsuccessful at killing Mike, with a broken spear and all, Dean’s swimming in the darkest abyss of low self-worth *hello 14x10 Nihilism*, stalling his so far excellent personal development, and this is presumably going to culminate in 14x13’s “turning point” (between D/C), where his severely traumatized internal state of mind explodes out of him after he bottles it all up. Ah, Berens!! *serves cake*
At the same time, Cas isn’t going to be dragged away by the Empty just yet, and these are two narrative sides of the same angst-filled coin; Cas actually stated that there’s rarely any happiness in the life. Sam and Cas going into Dean’s mind on Jan 17, however, has me flailing, because IMAGINE the expositional potential there *rubs hands together*
I still haven’t seen the ep in its entirety, but based on spoilers, 14x09 seems to cap off S14’s themes of Family, Unity, and Love and...Love in a perfectly painful narrative footlong extending from 14x01 — the moment Dean defeats toxic paternal figure Michael could be the core catalyst to A. Dean’s complete self-actualization/catharsis as he fights for himself (regains his agency) and B. Cas letting himself be happy since DEAN is happy, safe, and sound (don’t get me wrong, of course they have their own self-happiness to think about that involves their hopes and dreams, not just each other, but I’m speculating within the romance narrative context), which to me makes ALL the sense, narratively interlinking Cas and Dean’s happiness with each other, and I suspect that this trajectory will hold for end of season finale, where the instant Dean is happy, and Cas is happy too, and Cas gives himself permission to be happy with him, and they’re finally happy together, with the rest of their family members Sam and Jack - will the Empty drag him to nothing, introducing S15’s premise. In the meantime, Dean and Cas aren’t happy. The star-crossed lovers are separated once again and well, we’re starting to read one of the darkest personal/internal-focused tragedy chapters of their love story the closer we get towards the final frontier :( :( :( but don’t fret, because -

To you, to all of you
14x09
You guys this is so important. I know we're all talking about how the show once again, used a singular vs plural situation, like the famous "I love you, I love all of you." But this one made me do a double take. First, Michael is addressing Sam, without even blinking or breaking eye contact in the slightest. He wants to crush Sam as much as he wants to crush Dean. Second, while the words didn't surprise me, the way he said it did, because for a brief moment, EMOTION crossed his face. His tone didn't change but his expression does.
We hear: "He was too attached to you"
We see: what Michael thinks of family. Disgust, weakness, pity.
He knows what family can be, he knows that it can be both a strength and a weakness. This makes me wonder what his brothers were like in the alternate universe. Were they like the ones in the 'real' world? Michael killed Lucifer there, but what of the others? Raphael and Gabriel? Michael recognized our Gabriel when he went to that universe, but was he surprised to see him, who he thought was his brother, alive? Or did he not know where his brother was? Had he been abandoned by his brother? Is that why he wants to destroy Dean and Sam in every way? (Sorry this is starting to feel like a whole new topic, maybe another time)
Michael can see that Dean loves his brother. He sees Sam as Dean's weakness - "too attached" - and he recognizes that Dean loves Cas and Jack too, but differently - "to all of you."
In the first possession, Dean was fighting to get back. Dean told Sam he was drowning, perhaps that was just a metaphor. What could make a person feel like they're drowning? Helpless. Hopeless. You see the light, but it's just out of reach, because everything around you is trying to pull you down and keep you from getting to it.
Now Dean is buried. By what? Michael wanted to break him, to crush and disappoint him. You know what can do that to a person? Regret. Failure.
You know who else spoke of their biggest regret this season? Cas.
The boys are gonna try to get into Dean's mind the same way Dean went into Mary's mind to try to wake her up. He ended up only being able to reach her by telling her how he truly felt. How he had to look after Sam as both the mother and father. That he hated her. And that he loved her.
I'm very excited for the next episode. This is going to be a long hiatus.
Tagging some peeps, all are welcome to join the discussion! :)

I am too tired to write these up but just so as I don’t forget...
@7faerielights, we were right!! Sleeper Agent Dean it was. Literally everyone predicted this, more or less, but I still found it satisfying. No trigger, though he was clearly using Dean to spy. I interpreted the point they made of suggesting that Michael used Garth that way was to imply that he’d been similarly spying on the Winchesters all along, which is how he knew exactly where to find them.
I had a little complaint/annoyance about how much I had to suspend my disbelief to imagine that none of them had been considering the possibility that Michael had an open line to Dean, especially given how immediately they jumped to that conclusion with Garth. But actually they’ve had to do a lot of playing dummy this season for our benefit, like when Scully would have to pretend not to know some medical stuff she would OBVIOUSLY know so that the audience could get an explainer.
Interesting that he left before because Dean’s struggle was making him so uncomfortable and he needed to crush his spirit. That’s pretty much exactly why The Empty let Cas go...he wouldn’t sleep and it was bothering him. The Empty wants to take him back just like Michael took Dean back. Both are obvious depression metaphors. Both boys gotta fight for who what they love!
All the 12x12 callbacks and I can’t even calm down enough to list them. But, uh, yes. Bookmark for later. I’ve already seen people writing about this so I assume the discussing is going to get moving pretty fast.
All in all, a pretty satisfying mid-season finale! No surprises, really, but Bobo writes economical and meaningful dialogue and I liked all the evoking of past canon as well as little moments of humor.
@elizabethrobertajones, do you think party!Cas likes to eat Cookie Crunch when he gets home from his raves? Would he take the “cookietacular” decoder ring with him? I have questions.

Predictions inside dean's mind
➡️So from what I can make out the other version that we might get of Sam, Cas is their younger version all in dean's mind. From the time sam was a baby and Cas from the time dean was raised from perdition
➡️Maybe we see all the repressed feelings of dean, all his silences and that is how Cas will hear it from dean himself that he loves him #DestielCanonBitch
➡️ About john because on dean's mind he made an impact the most whatever his worst qualities are because of him, so we get a trip down the memory lane lasts 3 seconds only

Damn! So freaked out!
Pre meta thoughts 14x09 The Spair (spoiler)
Ok... Literally, what we were saying till now with my crazy spec them @emblue-sparks @mrsaquaman187 wasn't so crazy, bc... It was a foreshadow for a LITERALLY GETTING INSIDE DEAN'S HEAD.
Beautiful Dadstiel moment, I loved it, Jack is concerned bc Cas is hiding the truth about the Empty an the deal... Sobbing
CAS doesn't think he is gonna be happy if Michael is still out there... (Sounds familiar...)
Comfortable silence between Cas and Dean... Dean trying to talk? Or maybe Cas?
Dean doesn't believe he will be entirely happy till he kill Michael (sound familiar)
CAS's face when Dean mentioned the win "I'm hiding something big to you"
CAS to AUKaia: YOU ARE HIDING SOMETHING me: Hello???
Michael talking about TIME
And... Michael!Dean again... Breaking the Spair... He said he couldn't broke Dean and Dean was resisting him... Bc "He was too attached to you (camera focused on Sam) to all of you." Ok... Family bond... But we are forgetting the Profound Bond here... I need the Profound Bond with Castiel as something very very secretly Hidden Inside Dean (again that word) that he can't figure it out... As when he mistaken Anael with Cas... Dean has it so repressed... Like a secret... That he can't reach that... Please I need that... Sorry... I'm rambling again.
Aaaaand "Cas get in my head" but with Sammy? Shipper!Sammy?? He is always like the third wheel here? And how they get Michael!Dean sitting on a chair?? ROWEENA?? Using the British MOL machine... Parallel with THE TALK that Dean had with Mary... Remember that? The Cas mirror with Mary in 14x05? Is our opportunity??
Ok... I will rewatch this and then... You know.. a couple of metas for you, dear fandom.

A Unit
Don’t know if anyone else has pointed this out but in the preview (shown above) Dean goes with saying that he won’t be truly happy until Michael is dead, until he kills Michael. If we assume that Cas’ happiness is linked to Dean...
Witch, let me backtrack to point out why: Dean’s wardrobe has been getting closer and closer to Cas’ but this episode, right after Cas makes that deal, it’s as similar as it had ever been!! That plus tons of other meta about how the framing and direction keep visually putting Dean and Cas together, as a unit. They are connected.
So if they are connected, and it seems to be even more so now that Cas made that deal, THEN maybe their Happiness is connected. And if that’s the case then Dean stating here that he is just “good” real good! But “good” and will only be happy after they get rid of Michael, then... Maybe it’s foreshadowing.
Let me elaborate:
Dean and Cas are a unit.
As a unit their happiness will come at the same time.
Dean’s current trauma with Michael has to be dealt with before he can be “truly happy” and since Cas’ happiness is tied to Dean’s then the same goes for him.
Dean AND Cas can only be truly happy after they deal with Michael.
ie: The Empty won’t be taking Cas until after Michael is dealt with.
So... this conversation is foreshadowing. And I think even the camera work seconds this. Besides the framing of them on each side of the Impala, their clothes making the shot look basically symmetrical, they then come together and they speak about how Dean they won’t be truly happy until Michael is gone. Even the little “You We have a broken tape deck” seconds this, the conversation is about THEM, not about Dean. (Also broken tape deck = lack of communication since Cas is keeping a secret, but I am mostly focusing on the second half of the convo)
And then there is also the focus on Castiel at the end of the conversation, we just had a reminder that he has that deal hanging over his head in the form of his awkwardness to the “no strings attached win” that he knows is a lie. Then Dean speaks of how this is a chance for him to get rid on Michael, in order to be able to be truly happy, and how he looks forward to that. And then we get this foreboding music and the camera focuses on Cas’ worried expression... (Unless, maybe the music is part of the preview and not the episode, but either way the camera lingers on him being worried in contrast to Dean’s excitement.)
This is because of the other thing that needs to happen for them to have that “truly happy” moment, as the Empty said last episode Cas has to forget about their deal. As long as Cas remembers the looming promise of the Empty he can not be truly happy. He is, in a way, hoping to get more time so he is weary and cautious of getting rid of Michael, of letting both him and Dean be too happy, not just “good”, “truly happy.” (And I mean this as in he hopes Michael will stay around longer unconsciously, consciously he wants him gone, but unconsciously he knows getting rid of him will increase the chances of that “truly happy” moment and he hasn’t forgotten about the Empty’s promise, he is not ready to be happy yet.)
tl;dr: Dean and Cas are a unit, as it has been indicated over and over this season. Because of this their “truly happy moment” will be the same one. This conversation foreshadows and sets in place things that need to happen before said moment can take place. Dean must get over his trauma with Michael and Castiel must forget his deal with the Empty, only after that will the “truly happy moment” that shall take Castiel away happen.

We all know about the Dreamhunter/Destiel parallels, but I think it’s interesting that Bobo decided to express parallels between Cas and dark Kaia as well. When she asks how she knows she can trust them with the spear, Cas is the one who responds
Tumblr media
‘‘we do know that you are hiding something...you’re so desperate to return that you would consider giving up your spear? Well, that means you have a new reason something you’re not telling us.’‘
Oh Cas! Is there any particular reason you can recognise someone hiding a sacrifice they are willing to make for something they care deeply about?
Of course Cas was right. Kaia confirms this
Tumblr media
‘‘You have people you feel bound to protect, to save. So do I’‘
(I didn’t choose this screenshot for the framing of the phallic spear between Dean and Cas or anything)
Cas’ mission has always been to protect the people he cares about. Even in his darkest most misguided moments, he ultimately believed he was doing what he had to, to protect the people he cared about. Remember 6x20′s ‘’I did it to protect you. I did it to protect all of you.’’ (another singular/plural for the tally).
And now we’re learning that is Kaia’s mission too. I’m very interested in who it is Kaia believes she feels bound to protect. Who does she need to save?
It’s not like we link Cas to saving anyone on this show right?
