Prince Harry is in the Redbull garage today.

Quali report. It's all about downforce, created by using the car exhaust gaz (?) the FIA wanted to ban the practice but the teams wanted to keep it and there was a lengthy discussion about it. If I understand correctly it was restricted for the weekend anyway. It was raining. Alonso went in the gravel but didn't crash and got third place on the grid. McLaren did indeed struggle as Lewis had predicted. They were relying on the exhaust thing to make up for their inherent lack of downforce he was already complaining about in valencia. Lewis is 10th and Jenson is 5th. That's bad. Lewis is fatalist about it : there's probably a couple people in front of him he's faster than but overtaking is really hard so he's just stating it's another bad weekend. Di resta is 6th. Redbull said they would be disadvantaged by the rules change but Webber is on pole and Seb is second.

Anyway it's still raining it seems.

Lewis and Jenson went to meet jet ski world champion Jim Goodchild in London for a challenge : beat his time on a course in the docks (41 seconds). David Coulthard is also here. Lewis complains that it normally takes him a long time just to get in a swimming pool lol. David dives just beside him to spray him and he howls as the water is going down his back inside the diving suit lol. It's Lewis' turn as Jenson joins them.

Lewis is having the time of his life while Brundle and Coulthard watch shaking their heads. "We have no chance." 45.9 seconds.

Coulthard is next. Lewis gets a revenge on him by throwing him to the water as he did to him earlier. 51 seconds and he fell from the jetski. And Lewis throws Brundle in.

Martin gets 42.7 but he cheated. Lewis goes for another round, also cheating, and gets 41.7. Now it's Jenson, but he falls and gets hurt. He tries to play it off but everybody is worried about him, poor guy.

It's starting to rain slightly and most drivers went out to the grid on inters. Harry says he's rooting for Jenson and Lewis even though it's gonna be difficult for them today. He's there with soldiers from a charity or whatever everybody is rooting for Lewis and hoping for rain to help McLaren. Jenson says half the circuit is on inters and half the circuit is on extreme wets so it's a tough call for the start. Sir Patrick Stewart is here, he's rooting for force India this year though he also likes Jenson. He's excited about the rain. Perez already went on the grass and hit a barrier on his way to the grid and will have to start from the pitlane.

And they're racing!

Jenson up in 4th, Seb overtook Webber, loads of spray, Lewis up in 7th! And now he overtakes Di Resta for 6th. And he overtakes Jenson now! Crazy! Weren't they supposed to struggle??? Kovalainen retires. Oh he's gone wide but he keeps his position.

10 something laps in the pit stops for dry tyres begin. Jenson is in. Lewis’ tyres are done, he'll have to stop : he overtook Massa but couldn't turn and lost the position. Massa had no grip but he had to stay out because Alonso was in. Seb pits from the lead. Lewis is ahead of Massa. It’s messy, I don't know what the standings are anymore. Jenson gets fastest lap. Investigation for unsafe release for Sauber. Alright let's see. Seb is leading, still ahead of Webber, Alonso, and Lewis, who's ahead of Massa. Jenson is sixth. But not for long as he attacks Massa, while Lewis attacks Alonso just ahead. Here you go, Jenson is through. Schumacher gets a 10 seconds stop and go penalty for a collision. And Lewis gets alonso! Gooooo boys!

10 laps later it's Alonso attacking Lewis though. He's struggling. Yep. Alonso takes the position. Lewis goes in for the soft tyres. Oh god then Seb and Alonso stop but Redbull fuck up and Alonso is ahead! As well as Lewis! But Seb gains on Lewis so fast damn.

But Seb pits because he can't overtake Lewis. And Lewis follows. Seb has to make an amazing out lap now. And yeah. He's ahead now. Webber pits from second. Alonso pits from the lead. Jenson pits. Everybody pits. Oh no! Jenson slows down and stops right at the exit of the pitlane, there's been a problem. Oh! The front right wasn't bolted in! Ahhh.

Lewis is third, then, not far from Seb but also Webber is not far behind. Yeah Webber overtakes him with the DRS. Shame.

Last couple of laps and Webber and Seb are racing each other now. It’s tense! Massa is racing Lewis for 4th too. Aaaaaaaaaaaaah. What's it gonna be?! Team orders! Horner tells Webber they need to maintain the gap. Alonso wins, Seb second, Webber third but it's not over because massa is through but Lewis makes contact with him they're wheel to wheel in the last corner Massa goes wide and Lewis keeps the fourth place but this is definitely going to be controversial! We're gonna need a replay. In any case,

it's the end of the race!

Yaaah we see the replay and its shady af.

Lewis says "it was as close as it was gonna get" (but he does this thing where he scratches behind his ear when he's uncomfortable so he definitely knows it was a bit too close)

but first of all the team did a great job with the pit stops. Of course he talks about the support they have here in Silverstone and how massively thankful he is for that.

He had a good start, made some places up, unfortunately at the end he had to save fuel massively so he had to give position to Mark and then he was told he could push but that was too late but he wouldn't let Massa past. He says it's a bit frustrating yeah he also asked for more info at some point and it's a fine line to walk but he did the best job he could and he says thank you for the support again. For that last fight he was struggling massively the brakes temperature had dropped because he’d lifted up to save fuel so he had basically no brakes which is why he kept locking up in the corners. He tried to keep himself on the inside and Massa closed the door earlier than he could turn so they came together (that's actually coherent with the images). He says "I hope I was ahead, I think I was, wasn't I? (he looks at the McLaren PR with him) thank god".

Lee says hopefully he and Massa won't be visiting the stewards later. He jokes he has a platinum card for the stewards so he expects to be going.

Lee says "you can probably use the lounge now" Lewis says yeah and he's actually gonna go there straight from the media pen and wait there instead of going back to McLaren and then being called in. Ahshsgwhw. He's in a good mood though and smiling a lot.

Let's see if he was called in or not then. Well first off McLaren got a 5000€ fine for releasing Jenson while his front right wheel wasn't bolted in. Sauber got a 20'000€ fine for releasing Kobayashi while Maldonado was in the pitlane : Maldonado teared off some of Force India's stuff off the garage by avoiding him. It doesn't seem anything came out of the Lewis-Felipe incident though.

A Guide to Lewis Hamilton and Peter Bonnington

Recently I have been convincing people to become obsessed with whatever Lewis and Bono have so instead of repeating myself unnecessarily I have decided to make this handy dandy Bible guide to their journey together!

1. The Basics

Lewis and Bono have the longest running engineer and driver pairing in the history of the sport.

Sir Lewis Hamilton: if you don’t know who he is then I’m slightly surprised you are here but I am not here to judge. Sir Lewis Hamilton is a British F1 driver who has won 7 world championship titles with the Mercedes team! He’s a legend in the sport. He made his debut with McLaren in 2007 and has been with Mercedes since 2013.

Peter “Bono” Bonnington: Bono is senior race engineer for Mercedes. He has been race engineer since 2011 where he worked with other 7 time world champion Michael Schumacher. After Schumacher left Bono was paired with Lewis and they have been together ever since! He has been widely regarded as the most successful and most well known race engineer.

Note: for some reason there was a misconception going around that Bono was 10 years older than he really was. Let’s put this to rest: his birthday is 12 February 1975. Source

It’s Hammertime: maybe one of the most famous Lewis radio messages. Bono explains that during the years where radio messages were more strict they needed a code word to let Lewis know it was time to really go all out. So they suggested “put the hammer down” before it became “it’s hammertime”. Source (timestamp 18:17)

2. The Partnership

Out on track the race engineer is the critical link from the team in the garage to the driver. They must analyze all the data and determine what the driver needs to know without overwhelming them.

Platonic or romantic or brotherly no matter how you may view their relationship it has been stated many times by both of them that their relationship takes a lot of trust and open communication. They share a deep bond and connection that they feel is integral to their success.

The Egg: Bono brought an egg to the 2021 Brazil and Jeddah GP because Lewis loves the movie ‘Cool Runnings’ and it really inspired him when he was younger. In the movie they kiss their lucky egg. Source

I was traveling back from Caernarfon the weekend before last on this very stretch of road & saw that a Fox & a Badger had been killed.

As a boy aged 12 in the 1980’s I was hit by a car & knocked off my bicycle, believe you me I am still in pain, I can’t take pain killers due to the amount of pain killers prescribed to me as a child messing with my heart condition. So from aged 18 to now knocking on the doors of my half century I’ve had to learn to deal with it. The women who pulled out and hit me with her car in the 1980’s said she didn’t see me. Time slowed down & I didn’t feel a thing but saw everything in extreme slow motion, until I hit the ground. I did feel as though giant wings were wrapped around me. My point is it was a Sunday afternoon, her being in a rush destroyed my life, made an already disabled boy more disabled… yet good luck getting help in Britain if your disabled.

I was forced into hauling on my bicycle brakes when an on duty policeman in north Devon decided to speed up the hill in the rain without his lights on. I highsided my brand new bicycle and bent the frame. What the fuck was he in such a rush for late at night? Badgers regularly used to accompany me up that hill as my dicky ticker doesn’t allow me to cycle up hill. This one beautiful Badger, fearless amazing creature used to even walk up ahead then wait for me to catch him up, even chilling out waiting with me half way up the steep hill before the nightmare Summit. I eventually went to see a GP about my hip, 2011 the preventable “accident” happened, 2012 I went to see a quack about my hip & came out (eventually) with heart failure. To be fair I’d lost so much weight as I had contracted an “unknown virus” whilst surfing north Devon’s so called blue flag beaches… & I’m not the only surfer from that village either.

I have witnessed drivers nowadays in England, driving way too bloody fast, without a care for their own safety, the safety of others & not even giving a flying fuck about wildlife (please excuse my language if you’re easily offended, but as an actual Englishman who studied linguistics at University “flying fuck” is the appropriate usage… as in: it’s obvious the British Government do not give a flying fuck about the British Taxpayer or the NHS… etc,.) Thirteen years on from a famous British Grand Prix victory at Silverstone, Mark Webber has touched on the uneasiness in the Red Bull camp involving his then rivalry with teammate Sebastian Vettel. The Australian motor racing ace won his first British GP in 2010, but not all went to plan for Red Bull that day as the fancied Vettel suffered a puncture leaving Webb to challenge for honours.

"This was one of the biggest memories of my life," Webb recalled. "There was a lot of tension going into that race because of the contradictions on the equipment I felt I was receiving compared to my Red Bull teammate Sebastian Vettel. "I had a close start with Seb in Turn 1. He then made contact with Lewis (Hamilton), got a puncture - which I was heartbroken about - and after that I was racing Lewis to the flag.

"It was not a regulation victory - you always have to earn them and do the work - but I managed to have a clean day in front of a full house.

"I said to the team over the radio 'not bad for a No.2 driver.' I just thought I would let them know I wasn't a bad driver."

Webber competed in Formula One between 2002 and 2013, winning nine F1 grand prixs and finishing third in the drivers championship in 2010, 2011 and 2013. The 46-year-old from Queanbeyan will appear as an analyst for Channel 4 in their coverage of Sunday's British Grand Prix.

Webber said he loved competing at Silverstone, one of his favourite venues. "I always enjoyed racing there," he said. "The atmosphere of the crowd is incredible and they are bloody knowledgeable. You really feel that as a driver.

"It is a phenomenal circuit and one that should never be taken off the calendar. It is the embodiment of what F1 is all about."

Webber recalled two other great races at the track that captured his imagination - Hamilton's win in 2008 and the Briton's 2021 duel with Max Verstappen. "Bloody hell. What Lewis did that day (2008) was just magical. He tore the field apart. I was on the front row, and spun on the first lap. Everyone made a mistake that day, but Lewis didn't.

"He crossed the line 70 seconds clear of anyone else and lapped the field up to third. It was an exceptional display."

He likened Hamilton's duel with Verstappen as two gladiators marking their territories. "It is what makes our sport so great - two legends taking each other to the wire in front of a full house at a daunting circuit.

"Lewis is probably one of, if not the cleanest drivers I ever raced against, alongside Fernando Alonso. They are both absolutely extraordinary in wheel-to-wheel combat.

"But it was a very optimistic move from Lewis. To this day, I don't know how he did not retire with damage. Everything after that was a bonus and somehow the car stayed together and he got the job done and won."
