Mushing lost one of the greats. Lance Mackey was a four time Iditarod winner. He was public with his personal struggles with addiction and with Raynaud’s syndrome. Mackey was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2001 and was an inspiration for all mushers to continue to fight to keep doing what they love through personal hardship. RIP legend.

In honor of the moose/Iditarod rule 34 chaos post reaching 1000 notes and then Dallas Seavy winning the Iditarod here are all the unhinged stories and things I know about that race
They changed the rules and schedules so you can't do this anymore, but there was a subset of mushers who would race the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod back to back. That's a 1000-mile race followed by another 1000-mile race through some of the harshest terrain on earth in late winter. And the Yukon quest doesn't even finish where the Iditarod starts. To do this required putting dogs in a plane OR having another team of dogs waiting in anchorage and someone to deal with both teams of dogs.
The first woman to win the Iditarod was Libby Riddles in 1985.
Only to have her finish promptly blown out of the water by Susan Butcher who won the race in 86', 87', 88', and 90' while setting speed records the whole way.
Susan did race in 85' but she ran into a moose early and it killed two of her dogs and hurt the rest so she scratched. Dallas got lucky this year.
She was also the first person to mush a dog team up to the summit of Denali, the tallest mountain in North America. This is not what dog teams are intended to do, I don't know why she even wanted to, other than to prove it was possible. I don't think anyone has since.
The race now requires GPS trackers on all the racers and you would not believe the bitchfit everyone threw over those. Mushers can either hop between checkpoints or camp on the trail and it may surprise you to learn that these are the kind of people who have secret camp spots in the woods that they don't want anyone to know about. So now, everyone has acquiesced to the tracker requirement but you must have an account on the race website if you want to see them.
The race has 2 paths that alternate even and odd years with different checkpoints but every year includes a section of race that crosses the sea ice, approximately 50 miles from Shaktoolik to Koyuk. so forget landmarks. point the sled north and hope you're going the right way.
the race is in honor of the 1925 Serum Run and the diphtheria outbreak, but the trail itself is the old freight route which is almost twice the length. also, it's a freight route for hauling freight which means the the racers are going at more or less lightspeed as compared to the intended use.
the most effective way to avoid frostbite on your face is a fur hood and duct tape on your cheeks and nose. Cold-related injuries are rare but far from unheard of. The average number of toes and fingertips among mushers is lower than that of the general population.
The finish line is a massive burled arch in the middle of main street in Nome. There is not a lot going on in Nome at any given time and this time of year is the exception. Every racer who finishes the race gets the same reception, which is everyone in town crowding into the finish chute to cheer them on and the city fire siren going off. The last racer in gets the Red Lantern Award which means that they finished dead last but didn't scratch.
the 2020 race had started and was fully underway when the pandemic lockdowns came into place. as far as social distancing goes, you really can't do much better than being isolated 100 miles into the middle of frozen nowhere but the checkpoints are itty bitty villages with no medical infrastructure and the finish was reportedly terrifying because instead of a crowd to cheer at the burled arch, it was just the siren going off in a ghost town.
there is no way I can tell this story that doesn't sound like I'm making it up as I go. The sign says no sniveling and they fucking mean it.
no really, click that link. here's the YouTube vid (non-graphic, after-the-fact interviews)

Alexa's Favorite Movies of 2023
The movies that I watched for the first time in 2023 that I enjoyed the most or that really stuck in my mind for some reason or another. They are presented in no particular order.
I also ranked all the 2023 new releases I watched this year.
If you would like to see a similar list about the video games I played in 2023, you can see it here on Tumblr or over on Backloggd.
If you would like to see a similar list about the books I read in 2023, you can see it here on Tumblr.
Tumblr media
How to Blow Up A Pipeline (2022, dir. Daniel Goldhaber)
The scene in the bar has a Christmas tree in the background, therefore I am using this as my answer when someone asks about my favorite Christmas movie and I want to be an asshole about it.
Tumblr media
The Way Things Go (2023, dir. Amalia Farrow)
For me, 2023 was a year where I lost a lot of friends. No drama, no arguments, no falling-outs. Sometimes people just drift away. Maybe I didn't do enough to maintain that friendship or maybe they didn't or maybe both of us didn't. But sometimes it happens. And I think it happened to me a lot this year. It's something that has happened to me a lot in life - this kind of drifting away from people or groups. But this year it seemed to happen a lot more and has left me frequently feeling much more alone than it has ever before. But also I found someone special this year and that's been amazing. And this two-and-a-half minute long shortfilm encapsulates that feeling better than my little blurb here did and better than any other piece of media I've ever seen.
The Way Things Go is available to watch on YouTube for free.
Tumblr media
Tahara (2020, dir. Olivia Peace)
There are lots of movies featuring shitty teenagers but this feels like it really nails a lot of ways in which teenagers were shitty back when I was a shitty teenager. Some of the best written shitty teens I've ever seen, in movies or any other medium. Top tier shitheads all over the place here.
Tumblr media
Carol (2015, dir. Todd Haynes)
New favorite Christmas movie, by a country mile.
I didn't really know anything about this movie besides Christmas Lesbians so the whole "fighting for custody of her child" plotline really caught me off guard. It's so damn good tho. The whole thing. This may end up being a yearly holiday rewatch.
Tumblr media
Cassandro (2023, dir. Roger Ross Williams)
Wrestling is something that I've never been directly into but I love to hear about. Listening to people who love wrestling talk about it and describe the storylines and stories is so much fun. Honestly I think it may be the best way to consume wrestling, especially for someone who can be squeamish about violence and injuries (aka me). So, I really love wrestling movies! And I just think it was nice to see one that didn't end with "and he got addicted to painkillers and died at the age of 42" or something! A wrestling story without a tragic end, whodathunkit.
Tumblr media
May December (2023, dir. Todd Haynes)
My immediate reaction after watching this was "what the fuck did I just watch" which is why I didn't give it a rating or leave a review at all. It left me so befuddled that I didn't know what to think of it and needed time to process it. And over time as I think about it and contemplate my own feelings and see other peoples reactions and discussions to it, I've come to like it quite a bit.
Tumblr media
Apayauq (2023, dir. Zeppelin Zeerip)
Apayauq is so cool!! She finished last in the Iditarod which earned her the Red Lantern Award and that fuckin' rules!! Lovely lil short doc about her and her life and her journey with gender and also her journey dogs across a whole lot of snow.
Apayauq is available to watch on YouTube for free.
Tumblr media
NAGA (2023, dir. Meshal Aljaser)
There is some recency bias at play here but also I have thought about NAGA every day since I watched it almost two weeks ago. That scene when Sarah is alone at the car in the middle of the desert with only the headlights to illuminate the empty fucking void of a world she find herself in and then suddenly something starts to approach her… that scene specifically has been bouncing around in my head near-constantly. Just some incredible imagery and visual work going on there.
Tumblr media
Dark Angel: The Ascent (1994, dir. Linda Hassani)
This is a movie that not only exceeded my expectations but kind of completely blew them out of the water?? I was expecting some horror-adjacent schlock about a demon from hell coming to Earth to kill the shit out of 'sinners' or whatever and on one hand, yes, that is true, that is what this movie is. But it's also just genuinely good?? It fuckin rules that right off the bat it is showing people being tortured in hell and then a voice clarifies that these aren't just any ol' sinners, no, these are landlords and bankers who exploited the working class. Veronica is a trans icon and this is the hill I will die on.
Tumblr media
Wifelike (2022, dir. James Bird)
this movie is garbage but it has the funniest name of maybe any movie i've ever seen or heard of. fucking WIFELIKE. WIFE. LIKE. god damn lmao
Tumblr media
The Doom Generation (1995, dir. Gregg Araki)
I first watch The Doom Generation as a deeply depressed teenager and then occasionally watched it every few years throughout my deeply depressing 20s and now I am keeping that up by watching it again in my deeply depressed 30s. It's a good movie! It's pretty hard to recommend, mostly because of the ending! I've looked into more of Gregg Araki's work and have really enjoyed what I've seen so far so I think he may end up being one of my favorite directors ever and it all kinda started with seeing a movie about angry depressed teenagers who are lost in life when I was an angry depressed teenager who was lost in life.
Tumblr media
Hellraiser (2022, dir. David Bruckner)
Earlier this year, I went through all eleven Hellraiser movies. It was a trial and journey that I suggest absolutely no one else go on. So maybe it's just because there's, like, six movies in a row that are trash-garbage terrible before you get to this one which is Somehow Good. Maybe my feelings on this one are higher than they should be because it was an actually competently made movie after slogging through the refuse that is the bulk of the Hellraiser franchise. But dammit I liked it and the new femme Pinhead is incredibly hot and I finally understand why people were so horny for Pinhead in the original one (or two (or three)) movies. Those old ones are good to! But this one stuck with me more, for now.
Tumblr media
Wingwomen (2023, dir. Mélanie Laurent)
I mean, this is definitely the best movie I've seen about a polycule of international thiefs that pull off One Last Heist so that the eldest of them can retire and go live their life how they want. I really hope it becomes a much bigger genre in the future.
Tumblr media
Imagine Me & You (2005, dir. Ol Parker)
This is technically not a first-time watch because I have seen it three or four times before but the last time was something like five or six years ago. This movie holds some really strong importance to me because it was one of the things I saw as a confused queer teen that was really strugging with my own feelings and my place in life. When I watched it, it was one of the only things I had seen where woman could be queer and open and happy. There was no big falling out with family. There was no major drama or tragedy to it. It's just a lesbian rom-com. And while it probably isn't the best in that particular sub-genre, it hit me at a time when I really needed it and that makes it special to me. Lena Headey should be in more movies where she's a lesbian, I think that would be good for us as a society.
Tumblr media
The Duke of Burgundy (2014, dir. Peter Strickland)
Trying to figure out how to talk about all my favorite parts of this without just outing myself and all the perverted kinks I'm into ahahaha it's a good movie, I swear!! it's not just perverse and exciting!! but it's also that!!
Tumblr media
Stay On Board: The Leo Baker Story (2022, dir. Nicola Marsh, Giovanni Reda)
Skateboarding is cool! I used to be way into it as a teen and it has always lived in the back of my mind as a cool thing for cool people. I think this year I watched something like 3 or 4 skateboarding documentaries which seems like a lot! And, hey, this one is the best because it's about a queer man coming out and not just finding his place in the world but making his place. It's a very sweet and emotional story with some strong moments. I hope Leo is doing well out there, he seems like a real solid dude.
Tumblr media
Mutt (2023, dir. Vuk Lungulov-Klotz)
I first heard about this movie via the radio(!) when I heard an interview (on NPR, probably) with the director/director Vuk Lungulov-Klotz. Riding in the car with my father (who I am not out to), hearing about this movie about a day in the life of a trans man, and just kind of vibrating with excitment about it but feeling scared to express that at all because my father would then have Some Questions that I was not ready to answer then. I had to discreetly make a note about the movie on my phone so I could figure out how to watch it ASAP and I am so glad I was eventually able to see it because it's so damn good. Feña has a fucking miserable day and it is so much fun to watch. He is so exhausted and stretched thin and trying his best and if that ain't the most relatable mood for a trans person in America then I don't know what is.
Tumblr media
Fanfic (2023, dir. Marta Karwowska)
The scene when Tosiek puts on masc clothes and experiences gender euphoria for the first time has been burned into my memory and I will never forget it. What a special moment. It really reminded me of the first time I wore a skirt. Everything felt magical, as if I had unlocked some secret in life. And I had! Because being trans fuckin' rules.
Tumblr media
The Pope's Exorcist (2023, dir. Julius Avery)
One of the most bewildering movies I've ever seen in both the best and worst ways. What a fascinating thing. It seems like it'll just be some ghost/haunting/exorcism movie but then it turns into some Catholic church apologia and sets up not just a sequel but a whole franchise. It is something that needs to be seen to be believed. Really kinda wild that it exists in the form it is. Like, no one look at this and said "what the fuck are we doing here?" Amazing.

Yukon Quest Day
Yukon Quest Day is celebrated on the first Saturday of February and this year it will be marked on February 3. It is time to go on an adventure with Siberian Huskies! Dogs have been working with humans in inland Alaska for over 10,000 years. Folklore in Alaska has mythological heroes who interacted with dogs, and some claim canines to be the ancient ancestor of the first human. During the Alaskan Gold Rush, Leonhard Seppala introduced the Siberian Husky, which was smaller than native Alaskan canines. The current sled dog’s genetic base is made up of indigenous dogs and Seppala’s Huskies. The genetic mix of the normal Yukon Quest Husky has been carefully chosen through many generations of breeders.
History of Yukon Quest
Yukon River serves as the historical highway of the north. The trail would follow the routes taken by prospects to reach the Klondike during the 1898 Gold Rush, and then to the Alaskan interior for subsequent gold rushes in the early 1900s. They despised the Iditarod Sled Dog Race’s numerous checkpoints and envisioned an endurance race in which contestants would rely on themselves and survival would be as important as speed. On the 25th anniversary of the event, Shank stated, “We wanted more of a Bush experience, a race with a little woodsmanship in it.”
The Yukon Quest was conceived in a bar in April 1983 by four Alaskans: LeRoy Shank, Roger Williams, Ron Rosser, and William ‘Willy’ Lipps. To commemorate the Klondike Gold Rush era the four proposed a 1,000-mile sled dog race from Fairbanks, Alaska, to Whitehorse, Yukon. A sled dog race from Fairbanks to Whitehorse had been discussed as early as 1976. But it wasn’t until this discussion that the Yukon Quest became more than just a concept. The race was dubbed the “Yukon Quest” by them to honor the Yukon River.
The first Yukon Quest put both race logistics and all participants to the test. In 1984, 26 teams left Fairbanks. Twenty teams arrived in Whitehorse over the next 16 days. Six teams were forced to abandon the race along the way. Sonny Lindner won the Yukon Quest for the first time, finishing in just over 12 days.

Yukon Quest FAQs
How do other Canadian provinces observe Yukon Heritage Day?
Yukon Heritage Day is observed on the final Friday of February. Heritage Day, on the other hand, is observed on the third Monday of February throughout the rest of Canada’s provinces and territories.
Is Yukon Quest harder than Iditarod?
The Iditarod has tougher competition, but the Quest path is far more difficult than the Iditarod, and it’s not simply because of the mountains. It is, in fact, the Yukon River. The Iditarod only travels roughly 130 miles along the Yukon, whereas the Quest travels closer to 400 miles.
What is the prize for winning the Yukon Quest?
Mushers in the Yukon Quest 1,000 Mile International Sled Dog Race will compete for a minimum guaranteed payout of $100,000. A portion of the prize money will be distributed to the top 15 finishers.
Yukon Quest Activities
Play the other games in the Yukon Sourdough Gathering: You can enjoy other winter sports like Dog Team Derby, Ski & Snowshoe Races, Ice Skating, Ice Hockey, Snowshoe Ski Ball, Bowling, and Basketball. There are many options to pick from.
Enjoy the carnival: The Yukon Sourdough carnival also includes fireworks, BBQ, ice sculptures, dancing performances, air shows, and a fiddle tournament. It is a feast for the senses so indulge in the merrymaking.
Learn about the history and legacy of Yukon: Do not only participate in numerous activities with your family but also connect with Yukon's legacy today. The festival's main goal is to bring all Yukoners together to celebrate the end of another winter.
5 Intriguing Facts About Yukon Quest Day
The coldest competitive sport ever: Every February, during the coldest and most unpredictable months of the year, this incredible winter event takes place.
Bad weather conditions don’t hamper the race: The Yukon Quest race begins on time, regardless of the weather, and lasts between 10 and 16 days until the last team crosses the finish line.
They’ve been no missed events: Since 1984, the Yukon Quest has taken place every year.
The trail follows the historic Gold Rush: This has been followed from the turn of the 20th Century.
Each team has 14 dogs: One human and 14 canine athletes traverse some of North America's last pristine wilderness.
Why We Love Yukon Quest
We love the stamina and drive of sled dogs: Sled dogs are serious athletes and the heart and soul of this sport. They are top marathon pros and are regarded as such throughout training and competition.
It emphasizes strategy: The race relies heavily on strategy and routine. The driver of the dog sled (musher) juggles between being a coach, cook, motivational speaker, cheerleader, and companion.
It’s the only international sled dog race: What began as a chat between mushers in a Fairbanks bar has evolved into something else. It is now one of the most widely followed sled dog races in the world, as well as the only one that covers two nations.

Iditarod mushes onward in Alaska as fans urged to skip finish in Nome
Iditarod officials urge fans not to fly to Nome for finish of race
Alaska reported state’s first positive coronavirus test this week
Jessie Royer of Fairbanks was leading the race on Saturday
As Iditarod mushers drove their dog teams across Alaska on Saturday, race officials scrambled to make last minute changes prompted by concerns over the new coronavirus, including asking fans not to fly to Nome for the finish.
Officials late Friday night urged race fans, especially those from out of state, to skip the finish this week. City officials in Nome followed most other Alaska cities in closing or limiting access to most public buildings in wake of the state’s first positive test, that of a man from outside the United States. The man was tested Thursday at an Anchorage hospital after earlier arriving in the city on a private cargo plane.

Wasn't there this scandal about the Iditarod because dogs were abused and in bad shape and the mushers only cared about the money and not their animals' wellbeing?
Lmao maybe if you’re an asshole from PETA, but the reality of the race is much different.
For one, the money mushers win from the race is minimal. 2020 Winner Thomas Waerner is on record saying that this is not a money making sport, mushing is expensive even if you do it recreationally like myself. To have an entire kennel of dogs is VERY expensive. Those dogs need care. Typically winnings will cover dog care, fees to enter and travel to the race, dog food, vet care etc. how much money is allotted to the placements depends entirely on how many entries there are that year and Iditarod has been very transparent with what amount is allotted. A majority of Iditarod running kennels do dryland/kennel tours during the summer because they simply do not make enough money racing dogs to cover their care. Dog mushers also have sponsors to help them get to the race, it is really difficult to foot the bill by yourself.
Dogs cannot be successful in this sport if they mistreated and abused. A successful sled dog has to be conditioned, healthy, well fed, and HAPPY. Sled dogs get more veterinary care than any other dog on the planet. Vets are at every race checkpoint and the dogs have to pass veterinary checks before and after the race. You can read more about Iditarod’s Vet Center HERE.
In addition, Iditarod mushers are required to meet Mush with P.R.I.D.E. care and kennel standards. That imo are more strict standards for care than what a lot of general pet dogs have.
Simply you cannot be successful in this sport if you don’t LOVE sled dogs. Iditarod last like what, a week or so out of the year. The other 300+ days you still gotta be on the sled training the dogs, scooping poop, being out in frozen weather, feeding the dogs, raising puppies, listening to dogs bark and howl, providing care for your retired dogs, making training plans, running enough tours to pay your bills so you can continue to mush dogs etc., many Iditarod mushers even have to supplement their incomes with non-dog/non-mushing jobs! In my opinion the dogs of Iditarod are treated with more care and kindness than the pet dog that lays around without mental stimulation and doesn’t do anything or go anywhere other than his own backyard.
This sport is about passion and the connection between man and dog in brutal wilderness surviving together, not money or control. PETA just likes to project because at the end of the day THEY are about making a profit and controlling others so of course other must be right? Mushers would still run Iditarod with a lesser prize/no prize, mushers are still going to run dogs, race dogs. but PETA and ARAs buy shares in oil companies in an attempt to control what dog owners do with their dogs. Do not fall for their narrative.

Birthday Week!
It’s my birthday week! And it’s the weirdest birthday week. Normally, my birthday is like national holiday levels of excitement! I actually forgot Monday that this was my birthday week. Granted, I was excited about other things Monday. (More on that later!) I haven’t been to the office for work at all this week. I keep meaning to go in, get a coffee on my way. But then I just wake up and feel like staying home instead. I think I like the choice. Wake up and decide, work from home or go to the office. I mean, the office is nice in some ways, but most days I just want to stay home with the dogs instead.
We went out for a beer Tuesday night, to one of our local breweries who has tasty beer and a nice outdoor patio! Wednesday, our friends asked if we wanted to go to the same brewery, we declined. I keep having to remember how old I’m turning. Is this just a getting older thing? Ha! I’m excited for Sunday, but more for the Denali park road than for my birthday.
Monday was awesome though! Okay, so most of you know these things... but in case you don’t, a little backstory. I have always admired working dogs. In particular, sled dogs. Balto! Oh man, I loved that story as a kid. (As an adult, I know that Togo was actually the lead dog for much of the run, but Balto was just the one who ran into Nome on the final stretch, and he got all the credit!) I found out about the Iditarod, and I was just enthralled with the sled dogs! A race to honor the original medicine run! How cool! (Now, living in Alaska, I think the Iditarod is a little too publicized and famous. The Yukon Quest is more true to mushing roots, and is my preferred long race.) I never stopped loving sled dogs. I always thought it’d be so cool to have working dogs, doing a job. When we decided on moving to Alaska, that was my big thing. I want land outside of town, close to trails. Enough for kennels. That’s a big part of the reason we chose the land we did. Just in case I had a sled dog kennel of my own. I took a break from my IT job in California, to work with dogs for a while. I took a course on dog training, to get more knowledge and skills. I apprenticed with a trainer friend. Last winter here, I tried to find a kennel to volunteer at. Everyone wanted full time help. So, I volunteered at hte Yukon Quest. Oh man, that was one of the best experiences. I absolutely loved it! So spring rolled around, and I tried again to find a kennel. But that’s right around when covid started, so I had no luck again.
Fast forward... I saw a request from a local kennel, asking for help a few days a week, a few hours a day for a couple months. I took a chance and reached out. Told her it was my dream to work with sled dogs. And... we met! We planned for me to join them on a run, and learn some basics. So, now we are caught up... Monday! My first sled dog run!!!! Now, in case it isn’t obvious, sleds only work in snow. So for now, they are getting hooked to a 4-wheeler and running that way. It’s summer training runs, so the goal is to keep them running at a consistent pace and to gradually increase the miles they run to increase their stamina. It was AMAZING! I learned about the gang line and the tug lines, and I harnessed and hooked some of the dogs to the lines on my own. I learned basic mushing commands, and watched the dogs in action. I helped unhook and unharness them when we got back. I helped with basic yard chores. It was absolutely amazing and I cannot wait to go help more! It has been a dream for so long. And I gotta say, it is absolutely amazing to be working with sled dogs! Maybe one day I really will have my own kennel! :)
So I don’t know, maybe it’s an odd birthday week because I’m excited about life in general? Okay, that’s super cliche. But honestly, Alaska has been the best move for me. People talk about soulmates in people. But I’ve been wondering, is it possible to find a “soulmate” in a location? A place where your soul is at peace and where you just KNOW you’re supposed to be? This really is that place for me. 2020 has been such an awful year in so many ways. But.. even in that, I’ve had major exciting life events. Even in all the awfulness, I’ve followed my dreams. And it’s paying off! It’s truly amazing!
Alright, that was a bit of a novel. I suppose as a thank you, if you made it this far. Recent pup pictures! They are loving me staying home more, and yes, they are all crowded around my “work desk” (aka kitchen table). Now we just need to find a job for Holden where he can also stay home!
