Larry Simpson used to work in the sewing room of a disability enterprise. From 9am to 2pm, three days a week, he would count and sort bags of laundry from local hotels and hospitals. The work made him “very tired and drained”, the 36-year-old says. Under the current national minimum wage of $23.23 an hour, Simpson could expect to earn $348.45 for his three days of labour. But he was paid $4.20 an hour – a total of $63 a week – a rate that’s only legal for one reason: because he has an intellectual disability. “The pay was crap,” says Simpson. “I wasn’t getting enough money to live on.” Simpson was employed under the supported wage system – a carve-out in national employment law that allows companies to assess the productivity of a person with disability and then pay them as little as $2.90 an hour.

A sleepless night turns into soft snores after Heavy reads for you in his mother tongue.

Imagine being unable to sleep after a long day of battling, knowing you'll be back at it again tomorrow. You know you need your sleep- Medic has reminded you countless times, the hypocrite he is- yet no matter how you toss and turn, you simply can't fall asleep.

You lie in bed, staring up at the ceiling in wonder. Maybe a small midnight snack may help? You take another few minutes to push yourself out of bed, your sore body reminding you how desperate you are for it to shut off for the night. "Your body heals best when it's asleep, you know!" Medic's words ring in your ears as you drag yourself to the kitchen.

The soft light from the kitchen nightlight floods the area, but you notice another light on. This one has more of a warm-yellowish tone, and you recognize it as the reading lamp. You get a slight view of heavy's arm as you pass by, it seems he's alone reading in the living room. You decide not to bug him as you quietly make yourself some food. You don't feel any sleepier, but it's sure to start helping in a bit, right?

As you walk out of the kitchen, stomach a little happier, Heavy's hushed voice calls out to you.

"Is (class name) having trouble sleeping?"

You pause, and then take a step towards the living room.

"Yeah, you know how it is sometimes."

He offers you a nod and focuses back on his book. Before you can walk away, he gestures towards the empty space beside him,

"Come sit."

Well, it's not like you have a meeting you have to attend at this ungodly hour, so you slowly make your way over.

"Would it help if Heavy reads?"

You think for a moment. You're not used to hearing his voice in such a gentle, quiet tone, and you have to admit it's quite soothing.

"It might."

He began to read, and you can tell how much more comfortable he is speaking in his mother tongue. You may have no idea what he's saying, but it's calming- quite the contrast to what you're used to hearing at the base. It almost feels as if you two are the only two alive, besides the plants and animals that can sometimes be heard.

It doesn't take long before Heavy notices soft snores coming from you, and the weight of you leaning on his arm.

Once he gets to the end of his book, he takes a minute to pay attention to you, afraid of waking your slumber. It seems you're out cold when he carefully picks you up, bringing you back to your room.

He gently tucks you in with a stuffie that Pyro had given you, letting his hand linger on your cheek for a moment.

"Good night, (merc name). Sleep well."

The Bremer Kogge, c. 1380

This is a soluble artificial wax that displaces the water from the wood over time and, at the end of the procedure, gives the fragile structure greater strength as it slowly dries out and Since 2001, the good ship has been on display at the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven.
