Unsteady - "Kalinda" SKAuthentic 1996 Third Wave Ska / Ska Revival
A lot of ska gets a bad rap—as it should—but when the goofiness gets stripped out of it, you can be left with some pretty sweet grooves. And this mid-90s tune from San Diego's Unsteady is a good example. "Kalinda" appears on both the band's second album, Tightrope, as well as a comp called SKAuthentic, which gathered together a bunch of songs from modern bands who were channeling and reviving ska's original mid-60s Jamaican wave.

Extremely extremely heartbroken to hear about the passing of Gregory Lee, lead vocalist for Hepcat. I still remember the first time I ever heard them, it was love at first song. While I never got to see them perform live, I have watched this video to put an instant smile on my face. Gregory's smile and voice is like chicken soup for the soul. Here's to you Gregory, thanks for making us smile.

the album too much pressure by the selecters was a masterwork in ska. through something that couldn't have been less than magic, it pulled together just about everything people think of when it comes to ska: a laid-back, reggae sound; upbeat, cheery grooves that pick up your mood for sure; black & white two-tones of quickly moving guitar beats vs comfortable grooves; all working perfectly to harmonize the ska tropes of the 80s with those of the previous wave. every song on this album is distinct from the others, making it a great thing to listen to all in one sitting, trust me. the lyrics contained humor as well as politics, and were delivered with great emphasis & variety. and no matter how hard i try i don't think i'm going to convey just how well arranged all these songs were, with bountifully dense textures & a really good selection of moods on display. it's not on the scale of overwhelming a casual listener, or perhaps putting off those who look down on art pop & the like, it's just a full course meal's worth of rhythm, harmony, & melody. this album should be listened to by anyone, just because of its range within the subject of ska, & as a good little landmark in the genre's history

hey punk
I've been interested in the topic of what punks listen to other then punk rock(tm) (punk genres that are punk entirely/punk first ie street, oi, crust, uk82, anarcho, etc) so if you could read this and rebolg with your answer that would be cool
im not doing a poll because (i figured out real quick) theirs a lot of genres and sub genres that are not punk rock (shocking) and i didn't want to shove super different sound into one space (such as the "tough guy" hardcore of a hatebreed with the straight edge youth crew hardcore of a youth of today into one box but i didn't want to make a 10 million checkbox long poll, and i didn't want to leave stuff like hip hop, electronic, folk, metal, etc off the list and have it just be the stereotypical non punk music punks listen too
so ill just explain what i mean when i say a "non punk" genres. this could go from the aforementioned hardcore ranging from pg 99 emotional hardcore to the beating vegan edge of earth crisis. gabber, brakecore, house. hiphop... 2000s mall emo... 3rd wave ska... what ever type of pop you want to call girl in red. basically as stated any thing that is not a core capital P Punk rock (tm) genre. i would also love some of the band you like in particular ( and as examples). and if you can't exactly put a real name on it you can just put a fake name on it ( agin with band as examples) such as like 90s mall goth (marilyn manson), anime fan brakecore(goreshit), 2000s pop emo (paramore)
more rambles in my note as this is already too long

Today’s compilation:
N.Y. Beat! Hit & Run 1986 Third Wave Ska / 2 Tone
Alright, well, in order to properly contextualize this album, I need to do a very quick and dirty rundown of the history of ska as a whole, so here goes:
Ska originated in Jamaica in the 60s as a precursor to reggae. It's defined by the skank—the repetitive single note or chord that hits on every other beat that creates the music's unique rhythm. A great original ska band to check out is The Skatalites.
Starting in the late 70s, ska underwent a very popular second wave in the UK known as 2 tone, which adopted its name from a record label that ended up popularizing four very important bands to the movement: The Selecter, The Specials, Bad Manners, and Madness. It was a working class scene that promoted racial unity and its songs were typically more uptempo and sharper-edged.
Then, in the late 80s, the term ‘third wave ska’ was coined in the US to describe a new crop of bands, like No Doubt and Sublime, who were pairing the music with contemporary punk rock.
But between that second UK wave and the application of the third wave label, there were also a bunch of US bands in the 80s who drew deep influence from the 2 tone acts overseas. And that's largely what this compilation is concerned with; specifically, a ska scene from mid-80s New York. Retroactively, I think these bands are usually classified as third wave since they're not from the UK 2 tone scene, but the bulk of them played a 2 tone-type sound.
And you can't talk about a budding 80s New York ska scene without mentioning The Toasters. Out of all the bands on this record, they seem to be the ones who had the most complete sound. They kick off the album with a sweet and mostly instrumental foray into spy music motifs, even reproducing the James Bond theme towards the end, and then later on, they deliver "Shocker!," which, along with a typical ska setup, comes with a keyboard using a recorder preset, hand drums, and female backing vocals. It's swell!
Another thing that's cool about this record is that a few of the songs depart from the 2 tone sound and go off in their own directions, blending ska with punk, which showed a sign of things to come, or playing new wavey synths along with ska. I'm not in love with how any of these particular experiments sound themselves, but they’re still intriguing to hear.
Also, there's a couple tracks towards the end, "Brighter Days" by The Boilers, which contrasts a very deep and active bass with both a softly ringing guitar and another guitar that maintains the skank, and "Free South Africa" by Too True—the only song the band appears to have ever put out—that goes on an extended and slow reggae-groove detour as it sings about the evils of South African apartheid. Both are pretty cool, musically, but be forewarned, both of these bands' white lead vocalists sing in a very cringeworthy, hasn't-aged-well-at-all pseudo-Jamaican patois 😬.
A neat little document of mid-80s New York ska that's caught between the UK's 2 tone second wave and the US' third wave. Pretty cool stuff 😎.
