Buck & Eddie: Season 7 Ravi's back for a reason

The video includes some of the important things Ravi said and some of his interactions with Buck and Eddie from seasons 5 and 6. Please note: the sound has been removed from the last few seconds of the video because it includes music and if I would have left it in, Tumblr would have given me issues with adding it to the tags. I left it in so everyone could see Buck lay his head on Eddie's shoulder after he picked Ravi up 🙃🤪😉😜.

Last season I believed Ravi returned at a specific time for a specific reason and when he did, I completed a post about how Buck's NO LONGER the KID of the 118 because Ravi is the kid now (linked here). Reminder, Bobby hasn't called Buck kid since Buck's coma dream.

Yesterday, a BTS from Season 7 was posted that includes Eddie, Ravi and Buck and it was intriguing. The look on Ravi's face makes it seem like it's his first time seeing something and Buck looks like "F" not again" and Eddie looks like "Ok... that's interesting but we can handle it" but neither Buck nor Eddie look shocked at all. There's not enough included in the picture to go on but their facial expressions say a lot.

Today, another BTS was released that included the same three 118 members, Eddie, Buck and Ravi. Please look at the GIF below and notice the doors they exited from. Eddie got out of the captain's seat but please remember in 6x1, he said he appreciated it if Bobby didn't ask him to be interim captain. Has Eddie ever sat there? IIRC he hasn't, unless I missed it.

After I saw the video, I had several questions.

First, why wasn't Buck sitting in the captain's seat? He always sits there whenever he has the chance. But for some reason, this time he won't be.

Also, where is Hen and Chimney? It's possible they could be in the ambulance (if medical is needed) but if Bobby hasn't returned to work then that really doesn't explain why Hen's not sitting there instead of Eddie.

Where is the rest of the 118?

Are they the only three who will be needed for the call?

Ravi and Buck got out of the back but since Buck got out first, it's possible they were sitting where they sat in 5x18 and 6x16.

In 5x18, Ravi made the infamous "Isn't that what we all want in a partner..." declaration when Buck was still with TK but he knew (the audience knew too) that she wasn't who Ravi was referring to with regards to Buck. (Pssst... he was talking about EDDIE! 🤪😜🥰)

Later in the same episode, Buck defined what love means to him while him and Maddie were sitting on his balcony (related post linked here). Reminder, he said it AFTER Ravi asked the team, what they all wanted in a partner.

Enter season 6 and Ravi was absent and couldn't be found with a pair of binoculars because KR (the former showrunner???👀 hopefully she's no longer co-showrunner since TM the OG is back) wouldn't tell the audience where he was but she sure had time to film a FaceTime or whatever the "F" LD ended up talking to Bobby on in 6x1 regarding why she couldn't be interim captain.

I said this in a post earlier this week (linked here) that KR was telling half-truths and these BTS pics of Buck, Eddie and Ravi are kind of proving my point. In season 6 she didn't let Ravi come back until 6B because she was doing something with the characters. I answered an ask from my friend @mattsire a few weeks ago after one of the promos was released (linked here) and I said now that Buck and Eddie will be partners again, I wasn't sure what was going to happen in Season 7 (I'm still not sure and that's why I'm not speculating because I don't want to get blindsided again like I was with 6x18) but seeing Ravi again reminded me of my original theory. He's back for REASONS that have to do with Buck and Eddie.

Reminder, for the majority of Season 6, Eddie and Buck weren't working as partners. Buck mainly responded to calls with the team and Eddie spent most of his time being a medic. They were only partnered together for one call in 6x7 and it was the last Felisa emergency where she got buried in her car. Even though they were partners again in 6x13 for every call, it was strange since KR said they were trying new pairings for the season (I debunked her BS statement in a post I did earlier this week [linked here]. I believe the show was trying to see if the audience would notice and be vocal about Buck and Eddie not working or hanging out together and we were.) But reminder, they weren't working together while Ravi wasn't there. Even after he returned in 6x14, Ravi went into the dumpster fire with Eddie in 6x16 and Buck was kind of still working on his own.

In the latest TCA interview, TM said Ravi will return in Season 7 and since he's the OG showrunner and Buddie's his idea, I believe he has a reason for bringing Ravi back unlike KR who did it to appease the negative feedback she got for splitting Buck and Eddie up in the first place. Then she only included him in the finale so he could hand Buck some tools🙄.

In 6x14, Eddie hugged Ravi first but Buck literally hugged him and picked him up.

Also, later in the same scene, Buck laid his head on Eddie's shoulder.

The point of this post is to illustrate how Ravi returning could mean the original plan for season 6 is back in play. Therefore if the narrative that was set forth continues and it remains unchanged, everything that happened in 6x13 between Buck and Eddie and the Buckley-Diaz Family along with Eddie leaning more towards the medic or paramedic side of things and Buck remaining a firefighter then it's possible Ravi's back at the 118 so he can work with Buck. If so then maybe he's there so Buck and Eddie can continue working at the same firehouse after they become a CANON couple.

Please note, I believe Buck and Eddie were supposed to go CANON in season 5 but it got delayed and with everything that happened in season 6, it seemed like they were going to be in a relationship by the end of 6x18 but it got delayed once again. Will it be delayed in season 7 too? I don't know but I'm working on two posts about some things that were said during the TCA interview and I'm debating if I'll post them because I said I wasn't going to speculate but I'll make my decision after I finish the posts and decide then if I'll post them.

Eddie’s been watching the whole thing unfold so he knows what’s happening. Hen’s only just arrived and it’s easy to imagine how you’d be confused by all this so her question is hardly surprising.

“What..what is he doing?” 

His friend’s resigned tone of long suffering pulls Eddie’s attention away from Buck, but only for  a moment because he needs to keep an eye on the situation and step in if things get dangerous.

His focus returns to the goal of keeping Buck safe because while Buck’s tall he’s not quite tall enough for what he’s attempting to do. Eddie chews on his lower lip nervously as he watches. 

Buck’s stretching up as far as he can go, almost on his tiptoes and Eddie’s trying to keep his attention fixed on the OSHA violations occurring and not the strip of skin that’s been revealed by Buck’s shirt rising up as his arms reach higher. 

“It’s stuck Hen! It needs help.” Buck calls down over his shoulder answering her question without actually telling her anything useful. 

Another weary voice joins in, “Do I even want to know?” Eddie risks another quick glance backwards and it reveals that Chim has also arrived now with Ravi. 

Ravi looks confused, Chim less so but then he has known Buck longer.

“It’s not like we don’t go on rescue missions every day” Buck says, voice a little strained by what he’s doing, he’s still far too precariously balanced for Eddie’s comfort. 

Then Buck reaches out again, stretching his arms, shirt and Eddie’s nerves to their limit. Eddie winces, worried about an imminent disaster, he takes an unconscious step forward hand twitching ready to reach out when Buck suddenly exclaims loudly,

“Ahah! Got him!” 

He turns around and looks down at the small crowd he’s drawn, the smile spreading across his face is triumphant. He’s very clearly delighted with himself, blue eyes seek out and find Eddie’s and when they meet the smile widens just a little. Eddie allows himself a few seconds to bask in the glow of that then breaks the moment by rolling his eyes before he reveals too much about himself.

“Although” Buck says “you know ‘him’ isn’t really right for bees because… “

“Buck!” Bobby’s voice captures everyone’s attention, “Get off the furniture…” he sounds exasperated but not surprised at what he’s seeing. He doesn’t even ask what Buck is doing standing on a table and holding a glass jar topped with a piece of paper.

Buck grimaces guilty and steps down onto a nearby chair, Eddie reaches up quickly to steady him when he wobbles before breathing more easily once he’s safely on his own two feet again. 

“Hey there, no need to get cross with me, I’m helping!” Buck lifts the glass up so he can talk to the tiny buzzing creature he’s just rescued and starts to head towards the stairs. Eddie follows because that’s just what he does.

Secret Santa

It December at Los Alamos and the ground was dusted with snow. It was freezing all the time now and the mesa was turning into some sort of desert winter wonderland. The scientists were all huddled in winter coats as they moved between buildings and the army men were doing their best to look unphased by the biting wind. You were here working as an assistant to Hans Bethe who was heading the Theoretical Division. You weren’t a scientist yourself, actually studying philosophy, but Dr Oppenheimer had picked you up during his travels, intending that you would work under him before he handed the role over to his friend.

There were ten days remaining until Christmas and you were determined to try and spread a little more festive spirit around the place. Yes, some lights had been put up and you had badgered Oppie to have some carols playing over the radio of the base, but everyone still seemed miserable. You were close to the director, regardless of how much his wife hated it, and you were hoping that you might have his ear on this. At the end of another day you made your way to his office, feeling lucky that there were no other secretaries around and knocking on the door.

“Come in, if you must,” you heard, pushing open the door. Robert looked up from his desk and his face brightened a little when he saw you. Everyone knew how much pressure he was under, so it was a rare sight now.

“Please, y/n, I apologise for my greeting. I thought you might have been Groves. How are you? Do take a seat.”

“Groves giving you a headache again Oppie?”

“When is he not?” He laughed, but you could hear the weariness behind it.

“I have an idea, I want to help the others.” Robert leant forward on his desk.

“My dear, we have been through this. You don’t understand the ridiculous things that the men here are trying to do, hell, I don’t half the time. I know you’re trying to help, but there is nothing…”

“Oh lord no, you can keep your physics to yourself. I mean that you need to make more of an effort on morale.” He looked puzzled.

“What do you mean?” He took his pipe from his desk, lighting it and starting to smoke, as he always did when a matter perplexed him.

“This place is suffocating in depression, almost as much as I am right now in your pipe-smoke.”

“I can open a window…”

“I’d rather be warm. Anyway, it’s nearly Christmas, I don’t care what Oppie but please, I’m dying here, you have to do something for the season.”

The conversation had gone on for a while longer, the culmination being that he agreed to hold a Christmas party for all of the scientists to attend. There was already a plan, from Feynman predictably, to have a piss-up in the bachelors dorms, but you were hoping that this might prove to be a little more of a unifying force. On top of this, you had also suggested a secret Santa exchange, which he agreed to. Typically when you pulled the names out of the hat you ended up with Oppie - what on earth do you get for the  man who owns Picassos and Van Gogh paintings? 

When the day of the party finally came Robert turned up to the main hall of Los Alamos on his own, wearing a suit and tie with his usual pork pie hat. He had just had a row with Kitty who had decided to stay at home. His mood was clearly compromised, but he managed to pull a smile onto his face. He immediately made his way over to where the alcohol was being kept, fixing himself a whiskey before going to find Ravi, needing someone to take his mind off things. By the time you arrived, late after one of the typewriters had jammed itself and you were left to fix it, he was a fair few drinks down.

There was a big crowd around the director, who was telling a ridiculous story of how he had returned from a trip collecting minerals with trench dysentery as a youth. This story coming out was the hallmark of a fairly intoxicated Oppie, and Isidor gave you a knowing look as you made your way over. As soon as Robert saw you he raised his arms in a slightly exaggerated welcome, before wrapping one around you and planting a sloppy kiss on your cheek. Great - he decided that you were going to be his distraction for the night.

“My dear, how wonderful of you to finally join us. I was just telling the story of when…”

“I know Opp, you’ve told me it before remember.” You cut him off, feeling an acute sense of second hand embarrassment. 

The evening wore on and it was mostly a case of forcing water down your boss’s throat until he was sufficiently sober to go back into polite conversation. He spent most of the party trailing after you with an arm around your waist. You’d tried to shake him off but we’re getting nowhere, you just hoped that his wife didn’t suddenly show up out of the blue. It was clear now that he was ashamed of his actions, but he was slowly getting back to his usual self. After a heavy day you decided to call it quits early when you heard a shout from behind you. 

“Y/n, hang on, I need your for one more thing.” He pulled a neatly wrapped present from a nearby surface. That was when you remembered the gift you had in your bag for him. What were the chances of getting each other?

“Well this is a coincidence, I seem to have got you as well.” 

You made your way to a corner before exchanging gifts. His was slightly messily wrapped, you could picture him getting frustrated as the tape stuck to itself and the colourful language coming out of his mouth just looking at it. Yours was much more neat, complete with a bow and all. After exchanging a few words about the coincidence of getting each other in the draw you swapped, unwrapping the gifts opposite one another. Your mouths dropped open when you saw what you were holding - an anthology of the poetry of Byron, different editions, but the same work. Robert was the first to break the silence.

“Well, it would seem that we both thought alike my dear…” he was chuckling as he said it. 

“Oppie, I’m so sorry. I swear I didn’t had any idea…” You were stuttering, trying to make some sense of the situation.

“Y/n, stop worrying, I love Byron or I wouldn’t have bought it for you and I’m guessing you would say the same thing to me, yes?” You nod in response.

“Clearly we have bought the perfect thing for one another then. Let’s just say it’s a sign of how well we understand one another.” He lifted an arm to your shoulder, giving you a gentle squeeze.

“Now go home and have a good night of sleep, I think we both have a little reading to do, and I have some other things to sort out.” He placed a kiss on your cheek, though a lot more dignified than earlier, before leaving you to go on your way.

The next morning you opened the door of your room to find a singular red rose with a ribbon wrapped around the stem, there was clearly going to be more to come.

Yall, let those of us who are excited for the new season be excited! ABC is doing a ton of promotion, articles and reels for our little weewoo show.

Let’s list the things that are great about all the article and videos, ok?

One: Look at them using Ryan! He’s got speaking lines in promos, doing interviews and just looking pretty. I’m happy to see this because Eddie is probably tied with Athena for my favorite character and I’m loving we are seeing him.

Two: the entire cast is excited. We have Ravi returning. Norman and Lola. An actual disaster happening! (Not to mention it’s made me go, hey let me look at all these cruise vlogs!) Also Angela and Peter are gonna kill it and I can’t wait! Roll them around like bingo balls (per Peter of course!)

Three: they are shoving Ryan and Oliver together for promos. Tim has mentioned Buddie and their relationship. I ship them fervently yes, but I am kinda glad we are gonna get any kind of Buddie content after season 6. Tim says he wants to hit on it every episode and that says a lot. Let us see the Buckley Diaz family dynamic and for the love of God, let Maddie and Eddie have scenes!

Four: Tim is showrunner and the reason I fell in love with 9-1-1. Bye bye Kristen.

On to the supposed love interests: Natalia. I don’t think Tim liked that storyline and it sounds like we may not see her.

Marisol: she’s mentioned but in one line. Eddie is figuring out who she is. I didn’t relate Marisol and Eddie with Eddie being happy. More like Eddie is getting therapy and learning how to deal with his trauma and getting settled in himself more. Bring on our sassy, bitchy and hilarious Eddie.

Tommy: honestly I have no idea how this came about but Lou Feringo? Jr is so sweet and amazing like his dad. I love Rocker on SWAT and am gonna enjoy seeing Tommy again.

Also: the outfits from the episode 100 celebration on Buck and Eddie? I have soooo many questions but will enjoy the chaos that will bring.

Also Madney wedding! HenRen my beloved. More Tracie please!

I didn’t feel this excited last season. This season, bring it on! ABC (and Tim, you heifer and your stills) you have done your job!

Look. I'm fucking done here.

I'm fucking furious. I've had ENOUGH of people shit talking Kristen Reidel for being "antibuddie".

Newsflash you imbecils, it's OBVIOUSLY blatantly untrue!! She's been here for us, from the very start, to lay out the foundation for queer Buck and Eddie. She's written, directed and been the executive producer for some of the most monumental buddie moments!!

Maybe take a moment to understand that these shows are huge and one person does not have all the say for how things work out. These people do not work in isolation, doing whatever they like!

Let's remember that the show used be on Fox, which is arguably one of the most conservative networks there are!!!

The show already had several main queer characters and romances when Eddie's character entered the show in season 2. We also know that the main target audience is fairly tradional, and the show is freaking expensive to make without a huge profit in return. We KNOW it has repeatedly struggled to get renewed due to that.

Let's remember that creating a show like this is not an existence of stress-free creative indulgence - you are actually responsible for HUNDREDS of jobs! The show's survival! People's income! The crew isn't just a couple of known actors, it's also everyone else making the show, and these productions are HUGE. It's so many families income at stake.

So WAKE UP and realise what they've been against, creating this show.

I'm like obnoxiously queer but even I would get nervous at the idea of similtaneously airing several queer ships on a show about emergency responders, on freaking Fox!

Seriously, just stop to think. What if they had gone for blatant buddie early on?

The show would have had to juggle... let's do some math...

Hen, Karen, and Eva being queer and raising a rainbow family,

Michael's coming out storyline, then his and David's romance, Josh being very much gay and dating men... Add to that Buck and Eddie, and that's MANY prominent queer characters, story arcs and romances trying to compete for air time... ON FOX, in a show about firefighters!

The risk of the the largely conservative, homophobic audience on a conservative channel going "it's too much" and abandoning the show was REAL, don't you pretend otherwise.

Sure, there are other less easily intimidated audiences, but how would they know if the leap into the unknown would pay off?

I think in those circumstances they made a very sensible decision to focus on the other queer characters anf storylines first.

Again, it's hundreds of people's incomes at stake!!! There must have been people, funders, bosses voting against adding more blatantly queer storylines to the current situation because it was just not the right time.

So Kristel Reid was CAUTIOUS when she gave interviews. Remember, the future of the show has been uncertain from the start with how expensive it is to make!!

She did not want to give false hope to the viewers hoping for buddie come true. She did not want to be accused of queerbaiting. She very sensibly made sure to appear neutral about buddie, and give the UNTRUE impression that her head canon is that meh, they're just straight friends to her.

Quite frankly folks... NEVER PLAY POKER WITH THIS WOMAN, I think she'd eat you in a minute!!

She LIED. Fucking absorb that information. Breathe it in! You can do it! She's been obviously rooting for Buddie to happen for AGES.

Why do I say this?

Well here's my fucking powerpoiny about it!!! Read this and take a minute to consider her innocent "oh they're the very bestest of friends"-front against her actual work on the show!!

She WROTE 5x18, you know, with Ravi's line to Hen:

"I think it's sweet that Karen was defending you. I mean, isn't that what we all want in a partner, knowing they have your back?"

She's no spring chicken, she wrote this fully knowing the memory we buddie shippers possess!!!

She WROTE the scene in which Eddie comforts Buck at the hospital after Maddie's kidnapping.

She WROTE 3x01, that's the scene in which Eddie bursts into Buck's apartment when Buck's feeling down and has Chris hang out with "his Buck".

She co-wrote Eddie's disgusted reaction to meeting Abby, she co-wrote Buck hearing that Chris is going on a two-week school trip and freaking out like a mother hen,

She WROTE freaking 4x14 - You know, the episode SURVIVORS, in which Eddie is shot by a sniper!! In the queerest way possible!!

She WROTE Desperate measures, you know - the episode in which Eddie breaks up with Ana, freaking oozing repressed queer subtext all over the place!!

Have you even watched the talk Buck and Eddie have before the breakup?!!! It's INSANE.

Try telling me that "door" isn't the door of a closet, I challenge you!!

She freaking co-wrote 5x17!!! The META of Taylor, in 5x17 "promising" she won't "run the story", and then breaking that promise.

That same episode has Eddie visiting his home btw, and paints a very illuminative picture of the environment Eddie grew up in - it practically spells toxic masculinity, compulsory heterosexuality, catholic guilt. Really, that episode basically screams "This is why Eddie is such a repressed onion."

THAT episode also has THAT insane closet door scene, Eddie opening a closet door as Buck says:

Buck: You know, your parents will understand!

Eddie turns to stare at him.

Buck: ...They should understand. *Plays with a toy dinosaur as he's talking, and pretends it bites his finger.*

... And again, after that episode she wrote 5x18, the one with "Isn't that what we all want in a partner, knowing they have your back?"

An obvious parallel to Buck and Eddie meeting and promising to have each other's backs!!!

Seriously, Kristel Reidel has had our back from the very beginning and I'm fed up with people talking shit about her!! I think it's no coincidence that one of the emergencies she wrote was "someone stuck in a freezer", that's fucking meta. I bet she's wanted to fucking hit the pedal but she's been forced to bide her time, and it's been fucking agony at times.

And don't even get me started on Tim fucking Minear, who people have ALSO shit talked because "hE jUst liKes tO QuEerBait".

BE FUCKING GRATEFUL FOR KRISTEN REIDEL, YOU utter... *censored*.

BE GRATEFUL FOR TIM MINEAR. They are our freaking GOATS and they deserve our love!!!

Edit. After reading up some more about the power structures of media networks like these... I would really not be surprised if it turned out that the people running this show (such as Reidel and Minear, the people listed next to the episodes) have had even less say on what sort of stories they get to do than I've thought.

After all, these people we fans focus on and know by name... They're really not nearly as influential as we think. There are still plenty of big chiefs higher up in the food chain. I've heard some vague rumours before that the network has meddled with the show's creative decisions a lot in these past years, and would not be surprised if it was true.

Anirudh Pisharody confirmed that Ravi will return for more episodes in 911's seventh season in ABC.

He first appeared in 100th episode "Buck, Bothered and Bewildered" and he can also be seen in some of the photos from the sixth episode "There Goes The Groom".

There are five episodes left in season 7 so let's hope that Ravi will be in it. Anirudh also said in this interview that he wants to explore the physicality of his character. It would be interesting if they give him a "Ravi Begins" type of episode in season 8 though.

family dinner-

“So Marcus, how’s life with my baby sister?” The bride-to-be asks while making a pouty face at Y/n.

“Abby stop it,” The y/h/c whines and flings a spoonful of mash potatoes at her older sister’s plate.

“A living hell right?” Elijah grins and wiggles his eyebrows at Marcus.

The brunette can only stifle a laugh as Y/n throws a cut up piece of chicken at her brother. She scowls at him as Y/n/n scolds the two of them.

“Yeah, ‘Lijah. Stop acting like a toddler.” Y/n teases her older and smirks only to have a piece of a dinner roll thrown at her head.

The y/h/c girl slowly turns her head to the side to see her younger sister grinning with her hand mid air.

Before Y/m/n can do anything Shiloh and Y/n toss pieces of their dinner at each other and the three siblings look at each other before shrugging and joining in.

“Guys stop it,” Y/m/n scolds once again and elbows her husband who is mindlessly shoving food in his mouth. “Y/d/n, help me out here.”

“Yeah, guys listen to your mother.”

Y/m/n sighs and smacks her husband’s head as she watching a her five children throw food around.

Y/n laughs uncontrollably as Abagail, Shiloh and her team up against the boys, flinging spoonfuls of mash potatoes at each other.

Marcus and Ravi, Abagail’s fiancé, share a look before also breaking out in laughter.

The two can’t even begin to express how lucky their were to find such smart and humorous and loving woman and be in a relationship with them.

The two keep watching the fight unfold as the siblings’ parents keep eating and sighs, well only their mother.

“Parker stop it! Don’t aim for my shirt, I just got it last week.” Shiloh half whines as she throws a piece of cabbage at her twin brother’s head.

“Too bad,” Parker laughs in return as he flings a bread roll at Shiloh’s head.

Y/n laughs and throws a spoonful of tomato sauce at Elijah who just in time dodges it, the sauce splattering all over Marcus’s shirt.

And just like that the pity food fight between the siblings stop and everyone slowly turn their heads to face Marcus.

Y/n is the first to break the silence with her laughter. Y/m/n can’t even open her mouth and scold her children as they all break out into laughter, apologizing over and over again.

“I’m so sorry honey,” Y/n says in between laughter as she places a hand on Marcus’s shirt.

“It’s a first and a tradition,” Ravi grins at Marcus who returns the smile as he pats Y/n head who is currently laughing into her boyfriend’s shoulder.

“How about he gets changed?” Y/m/n asks skeptically with a raise of her eyebrow.

“That sounds like a great idea,” Marcus gets up from his seat and excuses himself before he starts walking up the stairs.

“I’ll help,” Y/n runs after him.

“Uh huh, sure.”

Just imagine them having fun movie marathons and going to parties.

Also Sal comforting the girls when they have nightmares about their trauma.

Andie finding a job as a model because she’s literally gorgeous.

Sometimes, Ravi visits them and they play fun games where they split into two teams; older siblings vs younger ones.

Becca and Ravi would absolutely destroy Andie and Sal in video games!

Because I truly believe Pip and Ravi are soulmates, they end up dating in this universe, too. She starts joining Ravi on his visits.

All the while, they gather evidences to sue both Max and Jason. (Spoilers: they win both court cases and those horrible men rot behind the bars!)

Sal proposes to Andie using his mother’s wedding ring (which was originally his grandfather’s) and Andie picks Becca as her maid of honor and Sal picks Ravi as the wingman!

“And that is how,” says the Archmage of Winterhold, gesturing grandly to the Staff of Magnus, “after two hundred years, I found a walking-stick of perfect height. Snipp, snapp, snute, så er eventyret ute.”

“Most people,” says the mammoth-herder, “cut their own to size, Hrafi.”

“Now you tell me.”

Midday, and the rolling Hviting plains gleam golden-green. The mammoth-herder lounges in the tickly grass. Most of her beasts are browsing well downslope, rooting like great gardeners through goosefoot and sedge. They chew with calm deliberation. Only the two calves gambol nearby, trumpeting and treading on each other’s trunks—and turning, every so often, to make sure that their minder is paying attention.

“It is a good walking-stick,” she says, keeping a fond eye on the calves. The sun warms her shoulders. A sleepy breeze ripples through the grasses of the steppe. “And a good story. Wundorlic.”

“Yes, well.” With an embarrassed smile, her friend returns to his lunch. He’d bartered the bread from a passing drover; the mammoth-herder had supplied the cheese, and he’d mortared it all together with fascinating disregard for the proper way to eat anything. “Yarn for yarn. You’ve answered all my questions.”

“No small boast.” The mammoth-herder glances down at the Staff, propped like a broom against the Archmage’s bedroll and bag. It’s a twig like any other, she thinks. Only the blue flame flickering at its tip betrays it as a wizard’s companion. “You found it for the clevermen. Why did you keep it?”

“Had to,” says the Archmage, his voice somewhat muffled by sandwich. (That’s what he’d called it, though the mammoth-herder had witnessed no witchery in its production.) “It’s choosy. Burned my Master Wizard’s hand.”

The mammoth-herder raises her eyebrows. The calves trundle over, cross at being ignored; she coaxes one to her side, deft as a shepherd with a lamb, and scratches it under the chin.

“How does it—ouch,” she says, and makes a face. A wandering trunk had tweaked her beard. “How does it choose?”

“S’a matter of, ah, of might,” says the Archmage with a vague wave of the sandwich. “And—and stature, supposedly, and so forth. Far as I’ve read, anyway—oof—”

He goes down with a helpless laugh. The calf who had butted him tries to climb into his lap, finds it too small, and snuffles with indignation through his hair.

“Gently, lytling,” the mammoth-herder chides it, catching the curious trunk. The calf, out of the corner of its eye, gives her a martyred look.

Then it wriggles free and rummages through the Archmage’s packs. The Staff tips over. A kicked cookpot bounces down the slope. The Archmage, lying limbs akimbo in the grass, stifles an undignified snort as a few notes from his field journal flutter by.

“The mammoth,” he intones with mock solemnity, as if dictating to a scribe, “is a known vandal, and smokes like a chimney—”

“Might, you said,” says the mammoth-herder with a great grin, and plucks the man’s pipe from the calf’s trunk.

The Archmage seems disinclined to sit up. He pillows his head under one arm, smiling, and shuts his eyes. “Mm.”

“Stature.”

“S’what I said.”

“Why, then,” asks the mammoth-herder, not unkindly, “did it choose you?”

The Archmage blinks up at her. He’s wearing his squashed lunch. His hair sticks up in peaks where the calf had mussed it.

“I’ve no notion,” he says.

The calf, with a gleeful toss of its head, seizes the Staff and waves it. The Staff sends forth a delighted shower of sparks.

Had a little bit of inspiration from the wonderful snowball destruction @wtf-amiru gave earlier and ended up with this.

This is one of Ashern’s friends, Ravi! Now, Ashern is easily embarrassed (especially when it comes to Aymeric) and tends to blush to high levels, which Ravi immediately mends by either dunking or tossing him into piles of snow. It works surprisingly well.

Buck & Eddie: Buck’s not “the kid” of the 118 anymore

(Clearing drafts and GIFs before the end of season 6)

Bobby has called Buck “kid” a lot over the last six years and others have called him kid too including Athena, Chimney and Red.

But Buck hasn’t been called “kid” by anyone, including Bobby, since 6x11 “In Another Life” at the end of his coma dream when he said, “Aww kid, if what matters to you most is how other people see you, then you haven’t learned a damn thing” and it appears there is a reason for it.

In season 1, Buck was the young, hot, good-looking firefighter when he joined the 118 but six years have passed and he’s still a hot firefighter but he’s older now, he’s growing and maturing (hopefully) along with him finally being at a point where he’s ready to admit what he wants for himself (to have a family and to be a dad).  He has his biological family and his found family with the 118 but he also wants a family of his own.

He and Eddie have been building The Buckley-Diaz Family for five years but it appears Buck’s getting ready to SEE the family (Eddie and Chris) that’s been right in front of him all along.

It’s been a process but he’s finally getting the “life experience” Bobby told him he needed in 6x1 “Let the Games Begin” so he can be at ease.

Once he SEES Eddie and Chris, then he’ll have the answers he’s been searching for regarding his “secret to happiness”.

Ravi’s “the kid” of the 118 now and he was identified as such by Chimney when the two of them returned to the firehouse in 6x14 “Performance Anxiety”.

Chimney said to Bobby “You sent me to the academy to bring “the kid” back” and Bobby replied, “You’re a great teacher Chim, you’re a better leader than you give yourself credit for.  You led and he followed”.  Chimney called Buck “kid” in 6x1; however he hasn’t called him that since.  But he did call Ravi “the kid” in 6x14 and the reason for it is because Buck’s no longer “the kid” of the 118.

During 6A, when Buck was trying to figure out who he is, where he should be and what he wants for himself, I completed a post after he agreed to be a sperm donor that included differences between the growth and maturity Buck and Ravi (linked here) illustrated and it appears my speculation regarding why they didn’t include Ravi in 6A may have been correct. He’s younger than Buck but he’s always known who he is and he told Buck in 5x5 “Peer Pressure” he liked being himself even though Buck wanted to transfer out of the 118 and suggested to Bobby that Ravi be the one to replace him.

It’s CANON now that Buck is Bobby’s found son.  May said it first in 6x11 while she and Bobby were sitting outside of the hospital and Bobby said, “That’s a good kid”.

Then Athena told Buck while he was in his coma Bobby had already lost two children and he wouldn’t survive losing him which also happened in 6x11.

Buck is no longer “the kid” of the 118 because Ravi is “the new kid” and he’ll be the youngest firefighter/mentee to Chimney (future captain/mentor of the 118) the same way Buck was the youngest firefighter/mentee to Bobby (current captain/mentor of the 118).

If the narrative continues and Buck FINALLY FINDS THE ANSWERS (Eddie and Chris) he’s been searching for by the end of 6x18 “Pay it Forward” then he will have his own family and the nickname “kid” he was given by his found family when he first joined the 118 will no longer apply.

Did Bobby stop calling Buck kid in his coma dream to illustrate the way Buck is growing and maturing and finally getting to the place where he’s about to be at ease with himself and in his life?  Only the showrunner(s), writers and producers know the answer to this question.

things I've been thinking about since writing The Little Warrior:

ao'nung had taken to the idea of having spider as his advisor and right hand when he became olo'eyktan. While they had only been taught together for the duty for a short time, and spider had only been to a single ceremony, ao'nung is terrified to take on his duty alone.

ravi is torn between keeping his unspoken promise to spider, protecting ao'nung, and the promise he made to himself and his sister, doing whatever it took to avenge their brother.

neytiri didn't say goodbye, partly because she was too stuck in her own head reliving neteyam's death, but also because she felt like she didn't deserve to give herself that closure.

spider was Z dog's miracle child, the child she always wanted but was never allowed to have, and he was taken from her by the same people who took away her chance to have her own baby in the first place.

tonowari feels like he has to be strong for his family, his village, his world. he won't let himself mourn because he feels like he needs to remain available for his mate and children, for his people, his warriors. spider's death took one of the biggest tolls on him too, despite being a big stoic guy, he was so soft for his children, they made him weak; his most fragile child was the most proof of this. he continued to survive as a husk, putting his all into others because if he started mourning, crying, he would never stop and he would die without doing anything to avenge spider, to protect.

Reyzi would be dead before the end of the war. there would never come a point where she believed spider was avenged. if her life wasn't taken, she would probably take it herself.

tsireya would become unrecognizable, the previously pacifistic healer in training becoming a honed warrior, driven only by her grief. she had seen one too many people die in front of her because of the demons.

jake will always wish it was him.

lo'ak wants to do whatever it takes to end the war that made him the eldest brother, but knows that both spider and neteyam would have his ass if he left tuk all alone.

tuk was born into war and has only known fear and death since she was little. she lost 2 siblings, parts of her remaining family, home, and sense of innocence to it.

spider will know more about kiri's parents (grace and eywa) than she will for a potentially long time.

lo'ak found out that physical pain numbs the emotional kind the day he lost spider, and it fuels him for the rest of the war. he knows he can make the pain of his loss go away no matter if he wins or loses the fight.

quaritch was saved by spider, given family, home, happiness, and he couldn't save him in return.

spider will have to watch his family die and his planet be ravaged by war before being joined by his 'other half' and he'll be hit with all those memories all over again.
