Chapter 88-2 thoughts

I’m writing this at 6 AM because I CAN’T SLEEP WOO. As mentioned in my snaps, I first read this chapter while in a work call so I’m rereading it now to be able to focus a bit better. Buckle up, this will be long. Spoilers as always.

So Yukine was not necessarily snuggling with the wolves. He was asking them to eat him. I think in all the other bad stuff happening this chapter this detail got overlooked slightly but it’s bad!!!!

Who was the shadow we saw approaching him when he was with the wolves?? Was it trash dad after all? I think it has to be.

Yukine was such a caring brother it makes my heart hurt. Yukine in general makes my heart hurt. How did it end up happening that his mom just left him behind??

so if Fujisaki is telling the truth, we now know the context of Yukine’s death. And somehow, I think this is the most unpleasant revelation to come out of this chapter. Big statement, I know, but it explains...a lot.

Yukine was writing letters to his sister in secret for probably years, and as soon as his dad found out...well, we know the rest. I remember speculating (and a few others did too) why Yukine was barefoot and not struggling in that panel a couple chapters back that showed his final moments. So if he was already beaten enough to warrant hospitalization, that would explain why he wasn’t reacting the way he should have been.

At this point, if trash dad WAS telling the truth, I’d be fine if they didn’t show the actual scene of his death and just left it at that. Which means...we now know everything about Yukine’s time when he was alive. And of course there’s a lot we can say to fill out the gaps, but we have all the most important details. Finding out exactly how he died was the last piece in the puzzle. Aside from his full first name, that is.

Yukine yelling at trash dad to shut up and him continuing on anyway :) we really needed to know his final thoughts were “why?” :) I hate it here :)

I really hate even talking about this, this shit is FUCKED

okay so as far as trash dad is aware, Yukine’s body was still in the fridge. Meaning he had no idea that Yato went to dig it up all those months ago. Meaning Nora never breathed a word about it to him. I don’t really know how to express my feelings on this but thank you Nora. we owe you one. I have a feeling trash dad’s intent was not to give him a proper burial (since he’s all about false shows of kindness), though as to what it was, I cannot say.

I think at this point it’s pretty clear that Yato is the one who gave him a proper burial. When the panel of the empty refrigerator dropped a few months back, the fact that the body was missing struck me as just odd, and I thought maybe Yukine’s dad dug it back up for some sort of weird ritual, but judging by what we know now, that doesn’t seem likely. As soon as people started saying Yato buried him I was smacking my face like “of COURSE that’s what happened duh”

so trash dad is confirmed to drop his body in a very similar way to Hiyori, and we also confirmed that the version of him in the black robe is his spirit form. Nora mentioned his “body” a while back but now we finally got to see it. Is he a half ayakashi?? Is this just something he can do because he’s possessing Fujisaki’s body??? gah Adachitoka I want ANSWERS

Hagusa’s vessel name is just a double whammy. It’s like a horrible inversion of the fact that Yato named Kazuma Kazune. “Kazune” has the double meaning of referring to their time limit as well as being the “Kazu” Yato was already familiar with. With Hagusa, that name refers to a type of grain that looks like rice...in other words, something that appears valuable but is worthless. And now we see the vessel name is Yuuki? Adachitoka galaxy brained to punch me in the face.

SO THE REASON YUKINE DOESN’T HAVE A CELL PHONE IS BECAUSE HE DIED BEFORE THEY WERE INVENTED???? I always thought it was because he didn’t need one since Yato, Hiyori, Kazuma, and Kofuku were really the only people he needed to communicate with. but he seemed really excited to use trash dad’s. I’m in pain.

I’m thinking back to when Hiyori almost asked Yukine how he died way back in the beginning of the manga and trash dad now telling Yukine “Hiyori never wanted to know? I bet she did, since humans always want to pry into other people’s business” you shut your mouth

Speaking of Hiyori all we got of her this chapter was her looking pissed off. When she arrives to the fight I just want her to fuck shit up. She may not have her half ayakashi form but she can still snap trash dad’s neck in half.

Perhaps the reason Yukine didn’t find any news articles about himself was because “Haru” was just a nickname. I find it hard to believe that there was nothing about him going missing, especially since his dad made a fuss with putting up missing person flyers everywhere. There’s no way the police wouldn’t have gotten involved, right?

Either way it doesn’t really matter--his dad never got charged with anything even if he was a suspect, and no one else cared enough to look either.

“So even now my father is still killing me” this line. THIS LINE. THIS FUCKING LINE. It’s such a succinct and excellent summary of Yukine as a character--as much as we love our son, the fact remains that he is dead. And he is dead because of his father’s abuse and society’s neglect. So no matter however much he grows and changes in the afterlife, it cannot change that his life was cut short far too soon, and everything good that happens to him is overshadowed by the fact that it’s indirectly because of his nasty father. And he got away with it. I can’t.

Before this chapter came out I speculated we’d want to strangle Yukine’s dad even more than we already did. and I was right. but holy shit this line was a kick in the gut while I’m still recovering from “that boy loved people”

Yukine loved people too....he loved people and they turned their backs on him BUT HE NEVER GAVE UP ON LOVING!!! IT JUST TOOK A DIFFERENT SHAPE. FUCK.

So Father knows someone visited the fridge. I wonder if he’s figured out that it was Hiyori yet. I just want her to snap him like a twig. it’s what he deserves.

Father also doesn’t care about Yukine, like, at all (we been knew), to the point he couldn’t even realize the only blond character in this fucking manga now has black hair. MAN. that just says a lot about him, huh.

Are we going to find out whether one of his parents was foreign?? He and Yuka are both noticeably light-haired and it hasn’t been addressed aside from Yukine’s hair color changing.

The hair color change was the only spoiler I saw before the chapter came out and it’s been haunting me ever since. I thought initially Yukine dyed his hair while trash dad was out, but now I wonder if the dark hair is his vessel form? Fujisaki summoned him before leaving, so I don’t know. He does look like his bird ayakashi form with having clawed hands as well.

I remember seeing speculation that trash dad generally tells the truth. well as of this chapter we know he’s a fucking liar. Hiyori left that flower, and I think it will end up being important in the long run when Yukine realizes that she’s the only human who truly cares about him.

Whether trash dad has been telling the truth about other things remains to be seen. We still don’t know how he got out of Yomi, if that’s really what happened to make him immortal. But this lie about the flower seems to be a white lie. He could have just said he didn’t know. If he so readily lied about this, who’s to say he hasn’t been lying about other things too, you know?

Since Yukine is now so eager to meet his dad I can’t shake the feeling that he’s dead. It would be the perfect gut-punch for him to demand why his father killed him, only to find out that he’s dead (and maybe even that YATO did it...which would only add more fuel to the fire....fuck) and never get to resolve his turmoil.

I’ve been on the fence about whether Yukine’s dad is still alive but based on this chapter I’m putting my bets on “he’s dead and Yato killed him back in the early manga because that would cause the most suffering at present and that generally seems to be the route Adachitoka takes.”

Like, yeah, if Yato did it it was to protect Yukine, but that doesn’t matter when he’s already so pissed off at Yato.

Yato only fired on trash dad because he didn’t know that it was Yukine with him. And Yukine is again thinking that Yato is trying to hurt him. This chapter is also a horrible inversion of...was it 83-2? where Yato tried to kill trash dad and Yukine stopped him? Except now this time it’s not because Yukine wants answers, it’s because he’s pissed at Yato and loyal to trash dad.

Yato was also a fool for thinking sniping trash dad from afar would work, especially when it didn’t even work the first time.

So now the thing I’ve been working up to talking about throughout these many, many words: Hagusa’s vessel form is...himself. He is the weapon. This is such a wonderful (and terrible) narrative choice I’m delighted by where it will take us physically and metaphorically, but obviously it hurts. A lot.

Yuuki being himself the weapon that trash dad fights Yato with for what may be their final showdown is such a fitting culmination to his character arc in this section of the story. (when trash dad said he would turn him into a weapon I DIDN’T REALIZE IT WAS LITERAL)

This is also a good choice art-wise because it means even more pain with seeing Yukine physically fighting Yato rather than Yato and trash dad fighting with swords or something.

So Yato met with Yuka before (it was a flashback, as many people pointed out to me after I goofed last month lmao) but whether that was earlier today or further in the past remains to be seen. I hope he told her to get out because it seems like trash dad is heading into her house while Yato and Yukine face off.

well. “face off” is maybe an exaggeration. Yato will not be able to fight Yukine at all and I’m anticipating he gets the shit kicked out of him, again, while he tries to make him see reason. bro. I hate this. I really, really hate this. This final fight is going all the ways I knew it would, but hoped it wouldn’t.

Okay folks, I am all caught up with Tokyo Mew Mew Au Lait chapters 1-3 and Tokyo Mew Mew 2020 Re-Turn chapters 1 and 2 so I am Doing A Thing! Buckle up, bitches!

MASSIVE SPOILERS IF YOU’RE WAITING FOR THE OFFICIAL ENGLISH RELEASES (whenever the hell those will be). Thanks to @berrychanx, @hikayagami, and @ribbonstrawberrysurprise for the scans, English translation, and hard work putting the translation onto the manga so neatly.

LEADERS

MOMOMIYA ICHIGO AND SHIBUYA AOI

Honestly this is the biggest difference between the 2020 Re-Turn reboot/original series and the magical boy tribute. Aoi is in no way like Ichigo once you get past that they’ve both been injected with Iriomote cat DNA. Whereas Ichigo is cheery and bubbly and cute, Aoi is withdrawn, suffers from low self confidence, and sort of breaks the fourth wall during nearly every fight, freaking out at how catchphrases and such just seem to burst forth from him after he transforms. (It’s honestly a funny highlight.) Their respective crushes are also treated differently, with Aoi falling hard for Anzu (though of course saying nothing) almost immediately, almost a love at first sight sort of deal, and Ichigo already having this crush on this boy when we start vanilla TMM and already deeply committed to him in the reboot. In civilian form, (using vanilla Ichigo here, it’s not fair to compare Aoi to 2020 “been a magical girl for years” Ichigo), Aoi is a lot more unsure of himself, and seems almost to be in this Mew Mew thing for Anzu, whereas Ichigo immediately had a “I’ll do my best” acceptance mindset from the start. (Both freak out over their cat ears appearing at random moments, even Ichigo in the 2020 reboot, and I think I can finally give poor Aoi a point over Ichigo here. It makes him uncomfortable but he just wears a hoodie and hopes no one notices. It makes Ichigo freak out more lol.)

THE LOVE INTEREST / DUNGEON NAVI / SECONDARY PROTAGONIST

AOYAMA MASAYA, HINATA ANZU, SHIROGANE RYOU

Anzu is a precious peach and she occupies such a weird role here that I almost couldn’t make her a neat little graphic. She doesn’t fit neatly into a “oh, they’re a genderbent so and so” like nearly everyone else, and it’s fascinating. On the one hand, several panels in the first chapter of Au Lait make it clear that the writers are setting her up to be Aoi’s love interest. Every magical girl anime has a love interest, so why wouldn’t a magical boy manga? But that’s where she diverges. Unlike Masaya, who is a very clear tribute to Sailor Moon’s Tuxedo Mask (with the exception that he’s a cute bean as a civilian, he’s nearly the same person. No past, gets kidnapped, magical form to protect the magical girl, evil form to fight the magical girl [this happened in PGSM, and he’s been brainwashed several times]), who has always been a secondary character, Anzu actually starts the Au Lait manga. She wasn’t even featured on the promo images, so when I opened the first chapter in a zip file I thought I’d downloaded the wrong one. My rudimentary Japanese confirmed I hadn’t, but I was like “well who tf is this chick?” I waited for an English translation to be sure and yup - Anzu is being treated almost like a secondary protagonist. Well that’s new. It’s as if the Au Lait writers smashed together the characters of Ryou and Masaya and named their love child Hinata Anzu. She’s intelligent, she knows more about this project than she should, and, like Ryou in vanilla, she’s out and about and helping the boys, not just as a civilian, but in every battle. She doesn’t have powers (that we know of), but her smarts and knowledge of animals have served them well time and again. Au Lait seems more like, as one reader put it, Anzu And The Dork Squad than Aoi’s team.

Masaya in 2020 Re-Turn is adorable. He is at odds with Quiche over Ichigo (or more like, he dislikes just how much Quiche likes Ichigo), and in a moment of panic he uses his leftover remnants of Deep Blue’s power to... change his clothes. I’m not sure what actually happened there. (Note: Thanks ribbonstrawberrysurprise: Deep Blue manifested to float the chimera anima/train and its passengers to safety.) But I love that he was so concerned for Ichigo, who at that moment desperately needed help, that the being who created his body and didn’t like Ichigo wanted to protect her. Ryou was his standoffish self, but even he seemed to have a hint of a lingering crush. He organized a party for the Mews and then took over in cafe duties so Ichigo could meet her man at the airport, unable to quiiiiite meet her eye while saying so. I always did like Ryou/Ichigo.

THE SASSY RICH BITCH

AIZAWA MINTO AND YOYOGI SHIZUKA

First of all: SAILOR JUPITER TAUGHT ME THAT PINK EQUALS FLOWER HURRICANES AND CAN I JUST SAY THAT I AM DISAPPOINTED AS FUCK THAT SHIZUKA ISN’T PLANT BASED AND CAN’T DO FLOWER HURRICANES THAT IS ALL.

Admit it. When we saw the promo image, we assumed certain things. One of those things turned out to be true: Aoi would be the Iriomote cat, because of course he would be Ichigo’s counterpart. Shizuka is wearing glasses, and his costume had the little tail, which meant he must have been a fish or a marine mammal and therefore Retasu’s counterpart, right? RIGHT. But also very, very wrong, my friends. Shizuka is indeed water based like Retasu - he’s an Amazon river dolphin (the pink ones!) - and that’s where all his similarities to our gentle green girl end. Instead of making everyone exactly the same but gender flipped, Au Lait is going in a slightly different direction, and I really like it. Shizuka is actually the most similar to our resident princess Minto! They both attend prestigious elite schools and generally act better than everyone else, but the real gem here is their interactions with their leaders. Shizuka has some truly snappy one-liners - such as discovering Ryuusei (”that’s the power of an idiot”) - and his reactions to Aoi are gold. He considers himself a genius, and indeed he’s very intelligent according to Natsume (and his school seems to be for smart people, it’s not prestigious for music or anything like that), and he makes little quips at Aoi all the time about how Aoi isn’t. I could totally see him spending an entire shift reading a book at Cafe Mew Mew while Aoi does all the work, only for him to stand up and someone to scream “HOLY CRAP, SHIZUKA’S UP, SHIT’S ABOUT TO GO DOWN.”

Minto is also full of snappy quips at Ichigo in the reboot, mostly about how Ichigo should handle the biggest, strongest enemies since she’s the leader, and can’t Ichigo even keep them in place so Minto can shoot them down? (And yeah, someone totally said the above comment ^ when Minto stood up at Cafe Mew Mew.) Minto was always one of my favorite characters, and I love that we saw a lot of close ups of her in the reboot, and that she seemed to be second in command.

THE CHILD

FONG PURIN AND KANDA RYUUSEI

Oh my god these two. I refuse to believe they aren’t related. I know Purin is Chinese but you cannot take this headcanon from me.

Purin is my favorite character in OG Mew Mew and Ryuusei claimed my heart the second I saw the Au Lait promo. NEITHER OF THEM DISAPPOINTED ME, I AM SO IN LOVE.

While I WILL say that I in no way care for Mew Pudding’s redesign (I hate literally everything about it. I miss her jumpsuit. I hate the little pigtails at the top of her head. I hate the ribbon. At least she still has her fingerless gloves), I love that she got an entire panel of just her being badass. She stood in the middle of some train tracks, facing a runaway speeding train chimera anima, with that ^ fucking look on her face, and was like “where you going, na no da?” Purin from like, ten years ago wouldn’t have done that. She has matured so much, but she’s still the young, goofy little acrobat monkey who provides for her tea-themed siblings (who criminally do not make an appearance) and I just love her so fucking much, you guys.

RYUUSEI. Guys. He’s an idiot. Oh my god. He’s a cute lovable idiot. “What’s a gomodo dragon? What’s a kodomo dragon? What’s a condo dragon and why does it need a house?” Anzu was in love with him for like five seconds until she learned he’s a dumbass, and Aoi was jealous as fuck, and no one ever told him what his damn animal was, and I laughed my ass off through his entire last couple pages. He also had his jacket hand embroidered with the kanji for dragon, BUT IT’S MISSPELLED. It’s missing a stroke! XD

Ryuusei is the KOMODO dragon (which is Anzu’s favorite animal), and komodos are badass. He also either always had weird animal powers, or just never noticed that he suddenly got super smell. Komodo dragons, by the way, can track their prey for literally MILES by smell alone, for DAYS. It’s absolutely terrifying (thank you for the nightmares, Wild Thornberries), and Au Lait made it fucking comical. I can’t even. HE CAN SMELL THE RED DATA ANIMAL ON PEOPLE. I love it. He’s super strong and super cute, apparently lives with his grandparents, and is Purin’s counterpart in every single way, except I think SHE might be more mature than him. I love him. He is my baby.

Yellow is my favorite color and yellow never disappoints.

THE FAMOUS

FUJIWARA ZAKURO AND ROPPONGI AYATO

Zakuro had next to no presence in the reboot. She occasionally made some panels look pretty. She twice had a half page to herself, one per chapter. I am sad. I love my wolf lesbian. In semi-related news, I feel I have solved the mystery of Zakuro’s red data animal, something that has plagued the TMM community for years. The grey wolf is not endangered at all, yet Zakuro is injected with one, right? I read somewhere (either in a TMM blog or a conservation blog) that there is a subspecies of grey wolf that IS critically endangered. I believe it’s the Mexican grey wolf? I headcanon she was injected with DNA specifically from a Mexican grey wolf.

Moving on. In Chapter 3 (which was a DELIGHT), we met Ayato. Chapter 3 was the most frustrating chapter because let me tell you, Au Lait marks the first time I have ever read a manga chapter by chapter as it was being released in Japan. So I’m waiting Nakayoshi to publish the chapter, then I’m waiting for someone to scan Nakayoshi, then I’m waiting for someone to translate it, over and over and over, and omg I can’t believe this is what people DO. I’ve waited for full volumes before, but CHAPTERS? This is torture. Ayato, I haven’t had enough TIME with you!

Ayato seems to be an actor (in a really... really weird stage play), and has very few lines in his first appearance. I’m not sure what I make of him. He says about six sentences, which is actually a lot for a character introduced on a cliffhanger, but... I can’t decide if he’s said them in a mysterious Sailors Neptune and Uranus way or a flamboyant Sohma Ayame way. I ALSO DON’T KNOW WHAT ANIMAL HE IS AND I AM VERY ANGRY. BB Ryuusei said he smells like yakitori (a type of grilled chicken), which confirms he’s a bird. But. WHICH BIRD, DAMNIT?

CHAPTER FOUR WHERE ARE YOU?

THE FUNDING

AKASAKA KEIICHIRO, HINATA NATSUME, SHIROGANE RYOU

Hello again, Ryou! The boys here were wallpaper (though cute wallpaper) in the reboot. Natsume is 100% a troll. I love her. She admits in chapter 3 she literally just injected hot boys for her Mew Mew project. Even Ryou wasn’t that blunt. I mean, if you gotta save Earth and stare at people while you do it, they better be cute, right?

IF FOUND, PLEASE CALL THE FANDOM

MIDORIKAWA RETASU, SHIRAYUKI BERII, AKAI RINGO

Aside from her two half panels as a Mew Mew per chapter, this is the only good cap of Retasu as a civilian in the reboot. D: I believe Hiroo Taichi will be her counterpart in Au Lait.

I never liked Berii. There, I said it. She got TWO animals. She was some random newbie and she got to be leader just like that? And she was clueless and dumb and the writing in A La Mode wasn’t great. But I really like 2020 Berii. She’s cute, she seems more rabbit than cat, and she seems more intelligent and less of a blonde Ichigo clone. I don’t know if she’ll have an Au Lait counterpart.

WHERE IS RINGO? THE REBOOT WAS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO PUT HER IN THE STORY FOR REAL AND SHE JUST... WASN’T THERE?! THIS IS BLASPHEMY. RINGO IS THE BEST MEW MEW. BEST GIRL. JUSTICE FOR RINGO.

THE RELATIONSHIPS

MASAYA & ICHIGO VS AOI & ANZU

ZAKURO & MINTO VS AYATO & RYUUSEI

Nearly all of 2020 chapter 1 focused on Ichigo seeing Masaya again. I’m guessing this took place after he left for London. Ichigo left with him after A La Mode, and some time between then and Re-Turn came back to Japan, and now Masaya is back. They are still as lovey as ever, but not as sickeningly cute as Tsukino Usagi and Chiba Mamoru or anything. Phew! Their counterpart in Au Lait seems to Aoi and Anzu. (Look at that height difference! Poor Anzu, her poor neck.) Aoi already has a massive crush on her, but Anzu, bless her, is oblivious.

AND NOW FOR THE GAYS.

I think Zakuro and Minto is probably one of the most popular TMM ships and holy lesbians, Batman, they were well fed with this GORGEOUS panel at the end of chapter 2. Look at it. Zakuro had literally no panels, save for her two intros, to herself, and barely any panels at all in the reboot, and then BA-BAM, this beautiful ending shot. I swear Ikumi did it on purpose. Speaking of gays - is Ayato/Ryuusei the new Zakuro/Minto? Ayato seems to be at least bisexual (he also hit on Anzu), but this was literally his second panel. He is in a (terrible, TERRIBLE) play, and the actors are walking in the audience looking for the villain. Ayato walks into the audience and HITS ON RYUUSEI. His first goddamn words are “Do you want me to keep you, my cute little puppy?” to Ryuusei. He says fuck this acting shit, I see a SNACK. I think I ship it. I think I ship it hard.

THE STORY

*Au Lait is just getting started, so typical magical girl boy anime manga: Let’s find the others! Shenanigans! Some fillers! It’s cute, I love it, go read it.

*2020 Re-Turn is actually REALLY GOOD and chapter 2 reminds me of just how unique Tokyo Mew Mew was and still is among not just magical girl series, but animanga as a whole. Quick, what was the last environmental series you remember? Mine was Captain Planet - in the 90s. Preachy, in your face, after school special about things like pollution and endangered species and littering and honestly it was really cool, but very much a product of its time. Even now, magical girl animanga is still focused on bad guys, but bad guys are generic and represent something created for the series. Here, the bad guys are US, other human beings, who traffic animals, who endanger them, who wreck our planet enough that animals are barely clinging to life. There’s a very poignant scene featuring the adorable snow leopard up there (who’s the secondary protagonist of the reboot) ^, showing his mother being shot and himself being snatched by poachers, and he’s terrified, and has no idea what’s going on or where he is, and Ichigo is terrified for him. We need more series like this - not just of the magical girl genre, but of ALL genres. To make it accessible in this way, for people of all ages, something enjoyable, that people can fangirl over and love and its creators clearly put a lot of love and thought into. We need another Captain Planet, but less preachy, less after school special-y. We don’t want to be like the aliens (who remember, are descendants of humans who fucked up Earth so badly they had to leave it).

Behind all the cute of this manga and its reboot, and its new spinoff, Tokyo Mew Mew has a powerful message that we should all be following. It’s not even subtle. Get yo shit together, peeps.

Rosa’s Most-Basic-of-Basic Gpose Tutorial

Hello, I’m Rosa! And I’m here to attempt to help those out there who are either new to using gpose, are confused/intimidated by it, or simply don’t know what gpose is.

To put it simply: gpose is short for Group Pose, a feature in FFXIV mainly used to change how your in-game screenshots look in various ways.

I’ve lost count how many times I’ve seen people either struggle with learning how to utilize gpose for nice screenshots, or even just straight-up never realize it’s a thing that exists in FFXIV to begin with. And it results in so much ‘I suck at this’, ‘I can’t take pretty pictures like you guys’, etc.

And I’m here like, ‘YES. Yes you can!’

I know there are bigger and better tutorials out there, but I want to offer what I can in the easiest-to-understand way possible, since gpose is incredibly fun to tinker and experiment with once you get the basics down.

For the record, I will not be using any Reshade filters or mods for this. This is all 100% FFXIV gpose.

This tutorial also only contains PC keybinds, since I’m a PC player. If you’re a PS4 player, I recommend searching up the appropriate binds for your needs!

So without further ado, let’s start at the beginning! Pretty pictures abound!

1. Open gpose.

Simply go to your chatbox, and type /gpose in there. Like so:

When you hit Enter, you’re now in what’s known as Camera Mode. This gives you more freedom to move the position of your camera than in regular game mode, and lets you access a handy-dandy control panel to fiddle with various settings. We’ll get to that in a moment.

(You can also access gpose in your Actions & Traits menu, found under Extras.)

If you used an emote, expression, or combat action before opening gpose, it will now be cycling over and over. The easiest way to reset this is to exit gpose, have your character /sit and then hop back up, and re-enter gpose.

If there is a certain emote/expression you want your character to be doing for your screenshot, you can do it before entering gpose OR access the list of emotes from the gpose control panel. Note that combat actions can only be performed before entering gpose.

2. Move the camera!

As mentioned, you can access a lot more camera angles now! Try using your W and S keys, for instance, and pull the camera way up..

Or down low!

Your A and D keys can also move the camera horizontally (left/right)!

First person also works in gpose, so hit your Home key to try it out!

3. The control panel, also known as Group Pose Settings.

It’s not visible when you open gpose, but it’s the key to using the feature to its fullest. Usually the default keybind to bring it up is R, but if that does nothing, hit the key/button that your Auto-Run is bound to. It’s bound to the same key.

There’s a lot of stuff here, I know. But it’s really not as scary and convoluted as it looks, and all the settings are labeled to give you an idea of what they do. I won’t go into every single setting; experimenting is half the fun, so don’t be afraid to press buttons and try things out! But I will point out the ones that will solve a lot of the ‘I don’t know how to do this’.

4. The Face Camera button.

This utilizes your character’s head-tracking; meaning that wherever you position your camera and toggle the button on (you’ll know it’s on by the border around the button), they will look at you!

You can also turn this on/off easily with the spacebar.

This toggle can be used in many ways to make your character look in a certain direction. Depending on what you have them doing, their whole body may turn during an emote/ability, or sometimes it’s just their eyes that move. It varies between emotes/actions.

5. Camera Position and Color Filter make a ton of difference alone.

The first slider for Camera Position allows you to zoom in and out a lot further than you normally can. (Try using your scroll function after adjusting the slider too!) This is how people get those nice close-ups!

The second slider is used to turn your view clockwise or counter-clockwise. This can also be done with the Q and E keys on your keyboard.

This slider is largely useful for artistic angles, and makes taking full-body shots a breeze!

Color Filter is just what it says! It’s a drop-down list, and there are many to choose from, so try ‘em out and see what you like! One I tend to favor is Bright 4, since it makes the colors far more vibrant.

6. Emotes and Expressions time!

Note the little running man icon on the left side of the controls, and click on it.

This will bring you to the Motion Settings panel. Here, you can:

Toggle your character walking/running/sprinting in place.

Access your emote window.

Toggle whether gpose picks up combat actions, or makes your character face someone you’re currently targetting outside gpose when the Face Camera button is off.

When you apply an emote, you can:

Pause/unpause your character’s animations using the Disable/Enable All Motion button up top (bound to your 1 key). This also applies to the animations of others around you if they’re on your Friends List/in your FC or Party. This is HIGHLY useful for easy rapidfire pauses to get that pose just right.

You can also use the button beside it, Disable/Enable Target Motion (bound to your 2 key) to adjust ONLY your character, or whoever you are currently controlling. If you have a friend with you, you can click on their character (or use the Tab key) and switch to their perspective!

But keep in mind, you cannot change someone else’s emotes/expressions.

Note that emotes and expressions can be applied at the same time! Try mixing and matching different ones together and see what kinds of poses you can create!

7. Light ‘er up!

The last thing I will touch on is lighting, which can be accessed by clicking on the lamp icon on the left.

Here we have Lighting Settings. And wouldn’t you know it, it turned to night-time when I briefly left gpose!

Moonlight is nice and all, but using gpose, we can use a maximum of 3 extra light sources to brighten things up a bit.

These buttons toggle each light source, which can be adjusted with the sliders below.

(Note that Lighting 1 can also be toggled with the lamp icon up top.)

The Types under each Lighting simply determine how big/bright that light’s radius is.

Type 1 is the smallest/dimmest and Type 3 is the largest/brightest.

Type 1 is ideal for lighting up just a small area, like around your character, and the other two will cover more of your character’s surroundings.

Each set of 3 sliders are simply the Red-Green-Blue values.

You can also choose where to put down your light sources, as well as how close or far they are by zooming in/out. So if we place one down on one side of Rosa..

And a slightly dimmer one on the other side..

Now we can see her lovely face again!

You can do a lot of neat things with lighting, and the effect will differ depending on things like your selected filter, location, weather, and time of day/night as well. It can completely change the mood of your environment, so experiment!

Or you can just torment your victim subject like me.

The possibilities are endless.

And those are what I consider the basics of gpose knowledge! There are other things to play with as well, but the majority of them are simply extras for personal preference. There’s no such thing as a ‘perfect’ way to do it, just play with things and see what strikes your fancy!

ikesen fic - the inevitable correction of treading through time (prologue)

Summary: You and Sasuke decide to make the timeline as close to your reality the only way you know how: by making sure the the Tokugawa Shogunate happens, no matter how many tries it takes.

Your place in the war council had changed. In fact, you used to sit at the farthest corner of the room; a presence welcomed but not entirely needed, allowable only because Nobunaga's orders were absolute. You were his favourite, and until his deathbed, he called you his lucky charm.

Now you sit on the dais, a little to the right of the man you would sacrifice your life for. You should have known the years would change you (you knew what would happen, after all), but never did you imagine how reality would come to play.

As if time traveling was absurd enough, you were now somehow the wife of the first leader of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

Sasuke, bless his wandering soul, would be proud.

You remember how this timeline began: with your eyes wide open.

"Princess, can I come in?"

Sasuke's dulcet tones seemed to make the candle flicker. Your world re-orients, and suddenly, you understand. You had already attempted to sleep, but despite your fatigue the darkness wouldn't come. When you glanced upwards, the roof panel was slightly open.

"Sasuke?"

The ninja jumped down, landing with grace, taking a sitting position next to your futon.

You sit up and sigh.

"I'm..." You search for the words to say, hoping he would understand. "I just woke up."

At first, he is nonplussed. "I apologise for my intrusion, then."

You blink at him, and shake your head. Your sigh is of someone carrying a great weight. You place your hand on your heart, and try to block the memories of everything you've left behind. It's easier this time, somehow. Today, you have just awoken, and you need to determine who you—

The answer clicks.

"I'm finally here, Sasuke," you breathe in relief, but your best friend just stares at you blankly.

Until - "Oh," he says. He readjusts his glasses and you know the numbers are running through his head.

"Tadaima," you try again.

Sasuke nods, but his face is grim. "Welcome back."

When Nobunaga dies, even you are surprised. You had grown so used to him being immutable, you were sure he would outlast all of you. But not even he could outrun death, especially when it came so swiftly, and in the form of the powerful sea.

You still remember his face, how confident he seemed in his polished black armour, a large ship in the background. His haori billowed behind him, and he looked every bit the regal warlord you thought you would only see in history books.

But over time, your knowledge of him had become so personal, almost like family; that when he descends his horse to pat your head you even have to resist the urge to embrace him.

"Take care of Azuchi, my lucky charm," he tells you, as if you are one of his retainers with enough power to command his armies. No one questions him; if he willed that, everyone knew it could be so. His large hand ruffles your hair and then tilts your chin—you allow it with a small smile, but only because you knew someone else wouldn't.

"That's enough," Ieyasu steps in, with a frown meant to warn, but they all knew it would only make Nobunaga amused.

True enough, he laughs. "I will miss seeing new expressions from you, Ieyasu," he says, and in a rare show of affection, he also pats the blonde's hair and ruffles it. He walks away, then, and with his back turned, "I'll leave everything up to you."

Ieyasu nods. "I understand."

You watch him climb the plank to ascend the ship. When the sailors shout their final call, Nobunaga is on the deck, high above you, the rising sun reflecting on his dark hair with an orange sheen. His crimson eyes glint with the excitement of an explorer, and you think, this is how you'd like to remember him, the Devil King of the Sixth Heaven, for all he was feared, was also just a boy with a dream: to see new things, to travel far and wide, to go beyond the borders of his world and live.

Ieyasu glances at you. He slowly moves to take your hand.

"He'll come back," he says softly at first, then, with his usual sarcasm, "He'll be back in no time, and we'll be running ragged around the castle again."

You want to laugh, because you know these words comforted you the first time.

Instead, your grip is tighter as he entwines your fingers.

"That place Nobunaga went to," Ieyasu's whisper is raw during the nighttime; he is usually more honest after lovemaking, and you take every pillow talk as an opportunity to read him like an open book. He caresses your bare shoulder and continues, "Kankoku, was it. Did he..."

Your breath hitches. Ieyasu has made it a personal principle never to ask you about the future, but his repressed concern for Nobunaga could match Hideyoshi's on a bad day. In the fresh wake of Nobunaga's absence, you deem this is a bad day as any. He senses your stillness, however, and decides not to continue.

Once before, you let this moment pass. You distracted him by moving closer and drawing him in, your tongue languidly asking for an entrance you knew he would gladly give.

Weeks later, however, when the news came, you saw him look at you, his once bright eyes the color of a dark forest, asking—and though he would never admit it, blaming.

You cannot go through that again.

"This timeline is different," you say instead, hoping the truth in your answer would satisfy him enough. You choose your next words carefully. "In the future... the one that I originally came from, it was Hideyoshi who ventured outside the country."

Because Nobunaga was already dead, was the unspoken context. Because I wasn't there to save him.

Ieyasu traces circles on the area where your shoulder meet your neck, and you resist shuddering at the pleasure. "I suppose it doesn't matter," he murmurs as a reply, and when his lips replace his fingers, you know he will not ask anymore.

You wish you could say the same.

Hideyoshi mourns like no other when a sailor returns to say that their ship had capsized against a great wave.

Nobunaga's body was nowhere to be found.

Azuchi should be in chaos, but you steel yourself and follow Nobunaga's final will to the dot, even if you had to let Ieyasu translate half the complicated kanji the letter was written in.

Somehow, as if he had known what was going to happen, Nobunaga had sent a letter to his chateleine before boarding the ship, perhaps as a precaution, with orders to open it only if unpleasant news arrived.

His final letter to you included instructions on how to manage the castle permanently in his absence. Not just the castle; it also included new laws to be applied to the free market, an updated taxation scheme for the residents, and discrete orders to let Hideyoshi return to his fief until he calmed down.

No one else but you will be able to tell him it came from me, even Nobunaga's handwriting was lordly, and with a hint of nostalgia, you could imagine him penning this message with a smirk on his face. He will believe no one else. Ieyasu will take charge of my domain and my conquests for the rest of the year. Then, have Hideyoshi return and he will know what to do to succeed my will.

Ieyasu, for the most part, did everything Nobunaga asked with begrudging acceptance, but you knew that deep inside his heart swelled with pride to be chosen to lead. Ieyasu was a fine lord, through and through, and while you watched him hold a war council, finally taking Nobunaga's position on the dais, you felt a swell of affection so overwhelming it needed to be expressed.

That evening, you take Ieyasu's face into your hands and lean in for what was once your last kiss. You pull away a second earlier than you would have liked, and with the knowledge of one who has gone through time, push Ieyasu to the ground as a kunai whizzes past.

"Grab your sword," you tell him, dropping to a roll to get to the other side of the room. A bow and arrow sit on display and you swiftly grab the set, make the form of an archer, and shoot beyond the door. A dead body slumps beyond the shoji, and you hear quick footsteps rush around the house, making the torches flicker wildly. For a moment, it reminds you of your awakening.

"There are four of them, but only two are after you," you tell Ieyasu, bow locked and ready as the two of you step outside. The frown on his face is as much for you as it is for the situation, and you know you will have some explaining to do later.

The two of you huddle on the corridor, back to back, Ieyasu with his sword out and your body tense, arrow ready to fire. A figure clad in black rushes from the trees, hand raised with a knife, and you are not fast enough — but Ieyasu is.

His katana slices the man's arm cleanly and the blood gushes like a waterfall, and the assassin screams until Ieyasu pierces his stomach.

Pulling his sword out, Ieyasu huffs as the man crumples to the ground. He flicks the blood away with a single movement. "You said there were four."

Your eyes scan the surroundings, but your stance relaxes. If you remember correctly... "Masamune will take care of the other two."

True enough, as if he was called, the One Eyed Dragon of Oshu rushes to the scene, twin swords out and face wild with adrenaline.

He is panting when he gets to you, but you do not miss the worried way he gives Ieyasu a once-over before his eyes settle on the entire scene. He takes note of your bow and the first assassin with an arrow sticking out of his chest.

"Wow, nice aim, Princess," Masamune says with a whistle. Then, with a feral grin, "So, what did I miss?"

You almost laugh in relief, but you bite your lip because Ieyasu does not look happy at either of you. He scowls as he puts his sword inside its sheath.

"You're explaining this. Now," he says matter-of-factly, before practically stomping towards his quarters.

Your first urge is to comfort him, but you are like an unwound spring with how the tension leaves you all at once. You stare at the dark sky, remembering a different version of what happened tonight, trying to erase the vision of Ieyasu having a knife on his neck, bleeding on your bed.

The memory slowly fades, replaced by this one, and you realise you're doing something right.

Ieyasu turns around when he notices you aren't quick to follow. Masamune also has his eyes on you, and you wish you could answer all their questions at once.

Instead, you say, "We have to unite Japan."

The silence is overbearing after your statement; Ieyasu stares at you, his expression unreadable, but later you realise he might've been looking at you like you were mad.

Still, you continue; this time, with your eyes piercing his.

"Become Shogun, Ieyasu."

The conundrum is understandable. You and he changed history enough for the world to change.

"There are two ways to go about this," Sasuke has been working on this issue for longer than you were even here. "We either forget all of this happened, go back to our time, and live life as usual."

Basically, return things as they were.

The ninja stared at you—if it were that easy for your human hearts, he would have already suggested this plan ages ago.

"However, with our," he coughs, "attachments, to this timeline, I surmise neither of us would like this to occur. Hence, we must find a way to restore history's course despite our wish to remain here. Else, the consequences to the future may be disastrous."

You decide to take a risk and ask. "How disastrous?"

"We could change Japan as we know it." He senses you want him to continue, so he does. "The Azuchi-Momoyama transitioning to the Edo period was a game changer in Japanese history. The Tokugawa Shogunate developed many laws and cultural traditions that served as the stepping stone in creating what we know as modern Japan, also affecting, in turn, Japan's influence on the world."

"So, do you mean, as long as the laws and traditions are the same, everything should work out fine?"

"Unfortunately, it's not that simple. The context of why those laws and traditions are in place are also important, as is the attitude of the Japanese people towards them. It would be useless to implement any law if people didn't see why they were needed at the time."

In simple words, Sasuke was telling you that suggesting those laws to Nobunaga and having him implement it wasn't the same as having it implemented in the context of the Tokugawa Shogunate.

You find yourself sighing. "This is because of the Battle of Sekigahara, isn't it," You strive to remember what made that battle important... then it hits you. "The outcome of that war. It conclusively shifted the power of the daimyos."

Sasuke seemed proud you remembered some of your high school history. "Yes, and it was the first ever Shogunate to unify Japan as one."

You nod. "And without the tax, market and law reforms of the Tokugawa era, Japan would never have gone into seclusion and built up its economy."

"Exactly. Foreign influence would spread much earlier than it originally did. This could change the Japanese mindset immensely... whether for better or for worse, we wouldn't know."

"But it would change." It was starting to dawn on you, how selfish it really was to want to stay. "All because we're here."

The thin purse of Sasuke's lips were enough to tell you that he didn't take this matter lightly. His—no, your—beloved history, everything that you loved about modern Japan in 2019, all of that could be gone because you decided to fall in love in the Sengoku era.

All I was concerned about was myself and how I wanted to stay, you chided yourself. A part of you believed everything would work out, but that was naive. Since you decided to remain permanently in this era, you would never know what Japan would be like 500 years from now, but that was just washing your hands of the guilt that the truth brought:

You changed history. Permanently. In effect, you may have changed the fate of the entirety of Japan and its contributions to the entire world, permanently.

Sasuke breaks your inner monologue. "I may have found a way to ensure we stick as close to the original timeline, however."

"Go ahead, I'm listening."

"Well, the conclusion I've arrived to is simple enough," Sasuke's eyes are shining now, and you know he only looks this bright when he talks about — "The Tokugawa Shogunate needs to happen."

He looks at you meaningfully.

"Ieyasu needs to be Shogun."

It sounded straightforward enough. With a new resolution, you nod to Sasuke's suggestion.

"I'll stay by his side until he becomes Shogun, then."

You have never regretted those words, but sometimes you wonder if there is a timeline where you had.

"Become Shogun, Ieyasu."

You think the silence will drag out, that this will only confuse them more instead of make sense, but Ieyasu only steps forward and sighs.

"Alright."

Breathing clean air should be a given. Unfortunately, this isn’t always a possibility due to permanent or temporary environmental conditions. While we do have some control over pollutants outside (e.g., using alternative energy sources, driving clean emissions vehicles, etc.), sometimes it is tricky to clean up pollutants inside (in our homes). Luckily, we have a bit more control over this, especially if you use in-home air purification devices. The Okaysou AirMax8L Air Purifier is a perfect example of a unit that helps eliminate various harmful pollutants in your home. (*Disclosure below.) When choosing a good air purifier for the home, you have to consider a variety of things. Often, you have to forgo some of your requirements based on budget or size, or other conditions. Some items you may want to consider: HEPA filtrationNoise outputVolume of air circulation over time (air changes)Size of particles filteredEase of use (by adults and children)Price (unit and replacement filters)Physical Size Those are a few things to think about. But let me give you a quick secret, the Okaysou AirMax8L Air Purifier lets you put checkmarks next to all of the important items above. And I’m going to go into some of the details about why the Okaysou might be a good choice for you. 5 Stages of Purification Probably the number one thing to carefully research when getting an air purifier for your home is how it purifies the air and what it can and cannot remove from the air. There are plenty of products on the market that do simple air filtration, but the filters might not be “good” enough to remove very small particulate matter. On the other hand, there are air purifiers that do a lot to remove odors and VOCs (volatile organic compounds). Ideally, you want to find something that can filter and purify small and large particles. The Okaysou AirMax8L does all of the above, using multiple stages of filtration and purification. Let’s follow some pollutants through their journey of being trapped (or not) for each of the five stages of the Okaysou. It all starts with the Pre-Filter which can grab the larger particulate matter from the air. This is stuff like dust, pollen, and pet dander. If you suffer from seasonal or pet allergies, this filter may help you get breathing a bit better. On the Okaysou, this pre-filter is washable (one less thing to purchase, right?). So with the large particles gone, we move to the H13 True HEPA Filter which can grab 99.97% of particles as small as 0.25 microns (as stated by Okaysou). HEPA is a measurement standard developed and defined by the Department of Energy and other organizations. There are different standards for the US and Europe. And there are many different “types” of HEPA. To cut through all of the scientific mumbo jumbo, the H13 and True HEPA designations essentially mean that this filter is extremely efficient at removing very small particles. The AirMax8L has this level of HEPA filtration. The next layer of filtration is an Antimicrobial. For those airborne viruses and bacteria, this is the filter to stop those items. Again, I don’t have scientific equipment to measure this, so I have to go with what Okaysou documents – the sterilization rate reaches 99.9%. Next up, the Honeycomb Activated Carbon Filter. As I was putting in the various filters to test out the AirMax8L, I noticed that one of the filters had circular chambers that rattled slightly. Upon closer inspection, I saw that inside of each of these chambers were grains of carbon. This filter acts to remove VOCs like formaldehyde and other odors commonplace to the home. Lastly, the Cold Catalyst Filter has the ability to decompose and capture ammonia, VOCs, hydrogen, and more. This is the final level of defense against pollutants before the purified air is blown out of the Okaysou AirMax8L. One important thing to note, while there are five types of filters within the AirMax8L, there are only two physical filters that you replace. Multiple filters are smartly combined into two replaceable items. Whew, a lot of science to digest there. So, let me move on to things a bit easier! Using the Okaysou AirMax8L Setting up the AirMax8L filter system is extremely easy. BUT, you can’t just plug it in and turn it on. The two filters which are packed inside the AirMax8L must be removed from their plastic bags they are shipped in. I realize I’m probably stating the obvious here, but I almost did just that. So, remove the filters from their bags, then put them into the purifier itself. They do go in order – first, you put in the ULTRA filter and then the DUO filter. They fit extremely snuggly into the unit. Note: there are black pull tabs that you have to have facing out so that the filters are easy to remove later. By the way, the filters last up to 8 months with normal usage. There is an indicator on the top to tell you when it is time to replace them. Replacements are available on Amazon for about $20 (which is pretty reasonable). Once you have the two filters properly installed, all of the controls are on the unit’s top. These are all soft-touch buttons with very simple operations. The Power button is in the middle. Your last used setting will be remembered. On the left is a Speed button that lets you cycle through three fan levels. Speaking of fans, it’s important to mention noise output as well here. This unit now resides in my kids’ room. They had an air filter before that they mainly used as a white-noise generator for sleeping. There is a problem with the AirMax8L, though. Even at the highest fan setting, it’s pretty darn quiet. Yes, it generates fan noise, but not to the level as the previous filter. Honestly, this is probably a good thing as it is pretty quiet, ranging from a low 22dBA to a maximum of 51dBA. Below the fan indicator is the Replace Filter light. This will light up when it is time to get a new filter. Still staying on the left side of the control panel, there is a Child Lock button. Pressing and holding that button for several seconds will prevent little hands from changing the settings. On the right is the Sleep mode button. When you click that, the AirMax8L will go to the lowest fan setting, and all of the lights on the top will eventually turn off. This is perfect if you don’t want distracting lights in a dark bedroom. And finally, the Timer mode is an optional setting you can use to configure how long you want the purifier to run (1 hour, 2, 4, 8, or no timer at all). Final Thoughts We only have been running the Okaysou AirMax8L for about a week. In an ideal situation, we would want to go through a heavy pollen season, potentially filter out other smells or VOCs (like hair spray or nail polish), and so some more extending testing. But from the first week in, my daughters have only positive things to say about the AirMax8L (apart from it not being able to be used as a noise-blocking sound machine – again, not a negative, though). It does integrate nicely into their room, which has a white color theme (with black accents). The AirMax8L doesn’t have a huge footprint. It measures 12.9″ x 7.1″ x 19.4″. But, its placement within your room is an important item to consider. You shouldn’t just cram it into a corner. It needs to have good access to air on all sides, especially the back of the unit. Okaysou recommends an 18″ buffer around the AirMax8L. Purified air blows out of the top. Finally, let’s talk about price. Personally, I would have thought that the Okaysou AirMax8L would be more expensive than it actually is (and remember, you do have to factor in the cost of replacement filters of $20 every 6-8 months). But the unit itself is $118.99 on the Okaysou site or $118.99 on Amazon. Angels In Northern Renaissance Art

I decided to post my final paper for my class in Northern Renaissance Art, because I’m really proud of it! Anyways, here’s the essay, as well as the bibliography to go along with it if you want to do more reading on the subject.

Abrahamic religions discourage the depiction of God and other supernatural beings into an image, and yet the visualization of them is one of the most widely created. The visualization of angels was a hot topic for religious art, and during the Northern Renaissance, there was a sharp increase in the iconography of the Virgin Mary, which is almost always accompanied by various angels. Through Northern Renaissance paintings, such as Virgin and Child in the Rose Arbor by Martin Schongauer, The Annunciation by Jan de Beer, and Christ Surrounded by Musician Angels by Hans Memling, we are able to see how artists during this period explored the use of symbolism of color to express the different hierarchies and roles that angels have, and how they use this to create a visualization for these otherworldly beings.

Virgin and Child in the Rose Arbor is a painting featuring the most popular subject of painting in the Northern Renaissance; Mary and the baby Jesus. The dominant figure in the painting is Mary, surrounded by green foliage with pink roses dotted around her head. Jesus is a darker and more desaturated brown, making him seem less important compared to his mother and the arbor around them. The color of God emerging from the sky with a dove underneath him has robes of deep salmon and skin that matches the darkness of Jesus, showing repetition and harmony that alludes to the Holy Trinity. There is also repetition in color with God and Mary, as they are wearing the same color of robes, except Mary’s is slightly more saturated. What holds the greatest contrast in this painting’s composition is the angels holding a crown above Mary’s head. These angels are physically smaller than all of the humanoid figures, yet the most striking contrast is the blue color of their robes, which are out of place in the complementary red and green color scheme (1).

The blue in these angels’ robes was not an aesthetic choice to make a split-complementary color scheme, but a strong use of symbolism, as blue, has been historically used as a color connected to heaven. In different contexts and hues of blue, it can be used to symbolize chastity in the heavenly sphere, which would be fitting in the painting of the Virgin Mary, (2). Other uses of symbolic color that these angels bring out are the use of gold in the crowd descending on Mary’s head, which symbolizes heavenly light and absolute divine wisdom that was bestowed upon her when she became the mother of Jesus. These two uses of color symbolism work together between the two angels and Mary to create unity in the painting where there was originally contrast and linked the concept of angels into the painting successfully. But other uses of color symbolism between the subject of the Virgin Mary in different paintings are not in agreement with this particular painting. Rainbow wings are used in multiple images of angels in paintings about Mary, and rainbow wings symbolize the alliance between God and men and are used in another subject altogether, (3).

In The Annunciation, the angel Gabriel announces to Mary that she will be the mother of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Gabriel flies in from the left, colored with rainbow wings, shimmering gold clothing, and a rod of the ostiaries in hand, with a scroll of words unraveling from it. Mary is on the left looking downwards and her hands cupping the air over the heart, humbling herself as she receives this divine message. The linework is careful and smooth, and it guides the eye throughout the painting with the use of the architecture and the perspective, creating a realistic plane of space for Gabriel, Mary, and the other figures. The color values in the painting are another significant feature, as most of the colors are dull and dim, but the angel Gabriel contrasts this with his brightly lit body and his multicolored wings and robes (4). Even though the subject of the painting is Mary receiving God’s message, Gabriel is the center of the piece, as the use of color and value makes him the focal point.

Gabriel is the messenger of this good news to Mary, as it is his place in the hierarchy to be the focal point in both Abrahamic religions and art. In the book of Job, the first account of Satan and the book of Daniel gives the name of two angels, Michael and Gabriel (5). These two accounts, from the last two undisputed Hebrew texts, would lead to the important development in the way people think about angels. The Abrahamic religions begin to view angels in a hierarchy. “In the fifth century, an anonymous Christian monk, writing under the name Dionysius, examined various scriptural passages and suggested there was a nine-level angelic hierarchy: angels, archangels, principalities, powers, virtues, dominations, thrones, cherubim, and seraphim. A similar theme is seen in later Jewish tradition, especially in the medieval Jewish thinker Moses Maimonides,” (6). The archangel Gabriel is God’s messenger and delivered important messages to the prophet David to interpret his dreams, and to announce the birth of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ.

There is no coincidence that malac, the Hebrew word for angel, can also be translated to the messenger. The Archangel Gabriel, as well as many other nameless angels, have been reported to give messages to human beings for various reasons. The most famous message delivery by an angel in the Northern Renaissance is Gabriel telling Mary that she would give birth to Jesus, and would be visualised numerous times by countless numbers of artisans. This message reflects how angels are also thought to be involved in the conception of every child, since so many messages were delivered about the birth of a baby. “The Jewish Midrash and the early Christian theologian seem to suggest that the soul is introduced by the angel at conception, for this is when the angels announce the forthcoming birth,” (6). Angels are believed to be present at the start of life, and a message is delivered to their parents before or after their conception to announce their birth. This notion has also connected with the concept of guardian angels, and if every person were to have a guardian angel, then the guardian angel would have to begin serving and protecting that human from the very moment it’s life began (6), which is more ambiguous than modern conservative Christians would believe. As it is written in the book of Ecclesiastes, “As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the spirit is formed in a mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things,” (11:5) (5). Though it is unclear to humans when angels will begin showing their presence in our lives, their influence in their duties is always present.

Another task that angels are given is the praise of God with music. Their musical talents are not the most popular subject in the Northern Renaissance art, but not many pieces of art can contain angels without praising God in one way or another. Christ Surrounded by Musician Angels (7) is a beautiful example of where angels and music making is at the focus of the piece, directed at Jesus Christ in the center. This triptych is made up of two outer panels with five angels on each outer panel, and three angels on either side of Jesus on the center panel. The panels are dominated by gold coloring, with a variety of reds, blues and silvers within Jesus and the angels surrounding him. This variety in color and detail in the painting that brings out the shape and form of these figures into a believable space among the silver clouds around the border. The placement of this triptych was originally inside the organ in the monastery of Santa María la Real de Nájera, and combined with the numerous angels playing a variety of instruments acknowledge angels as beings who worship God through song, and give them importance within paintings with the goal to glorify God. One of the most notable details of this painting is the realism of the figures and the musical instruments the angels play, so realistic that allowed manufacturers to use this painting as reference for the accurate reproduction of these instruments, (8). This realism also served as a reminder of how confident artists of the Northern Renaissance were of the design and visual appearance of angels.

Though the first mention of angels having wings is the description of cherubim carved on the Ark of the Covenant (5), the first written account of all angels having wings in sacred text is in the Quran. ‘Praise be to Allah . . . Who made the angel messengers with wings— two, or three, or four (pairs)’ (35: 1)(9). Of course, this was after the popularity of angels having wings has already been established, and more than just cherubim had wings. Since the fourth century, perhaps influenced by pagan images of the gods Nike and Eros, not only cherubim but all spirits have wings of different kinds (6). This visual theme carries well into the Northern Renaissance period, as it is seen as the paintings addressed before. Virgin and Child in the Rose Arbor shows the two angels hovering above Mary with tiny blue wings, but only seem small in comparison to the human figures in the painting; compared to their own bodies, the wings are the perfect size. The wings shown in The Annunciation are completely unidentifiable from their original species of bird because of its colorful nature, but the archangel Gabriel has the clearly identifiable trait on his back like any other angel would. Christ Surrounded by Musician Angels show angels with various types of wings inspired by different types of birds seen in nature, all pointed upward and on display as a confident proclamation of how angels, without a doubt, all have wings.

Aniconism is suggested to be against one of the ten commandments, specifically stated in Deuteronomy, “'You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth,” (5:7-8) (7). Many Jewish and Muslim scholars have concluded that any imagery of God and angels could be teetering on idolatry, where people might begin worshiping these images and focus on their appearance and stray against the one true God. Christians on the other hand are less worried about depicting The Trinity and angels, and almost entire Renaissance period focuses on the commissioning of visual interpretations of holy figures, ranging from icons of saints to artists trying to capture what an unfathomable spirit might look like. There is a possibility that artists might have been overwhelmed by thinking about this challenge, and submit to the wishes of their commissioner to give them a generic physical form that is reoccurring in Northern Renaissance art.

But are angels completely without bodies? Thomas Aquinas says that angels are completely intangible yet completely realm, in the same way that an image of a memory in our brain is as real as the event when it happened, (10). “For example, the three angels who visited Abraham sat down and shared a meal. Thomas Aquinas responded that, in order to be seen, angels sometimes took on a material body that they made from condensed air. This looks like a human body, but it is not a living body. It is more like a puppet moved by the angel,” (10). This theory for how angels were able to make themselves known to humans may have not been in the thoughts of those who created paintings of them during the Renaissance, but it is something to consider when trying to comprehend how angels were even able to be seen to be able to make images of them based off of experiences. Artists in this period, in a time where was a boom of demand by commissioners in depicting heavenly figures, were forced to capture how an angel would look spiritually while still showing how they appeared in their illusionary physical disguises.

Angels in Northern Renaissance art have been incorporated into countless works of art, and because of this, it is no wonder that their influence in society still stands, even after the initial interest in religion in the public sphere has diminished. The depiction of angels, through the works stated previously by Martin Schongauer, Jan de Beer, and Hans Memling has been influenced in many ways by religious texts as well as religions other than Christianity. Their use of color symbolism and the physical appearance of angels in their wings help illustrate their position in the hierarchy of angels and try to make sense and establish order in an artistic movement where humans try to capture the elegance and complexity of supernatural beings beyond their understanding.

You cannot take it back, make it undone. Chapter 1: Lost somewhere between the stars

DBZ AU.

It’s popular premise in the fandom, but as far as I know not a popular take on premise - slice of life, sort of, but in space fantasy setting.

Raditz, Gohan; over 5 800 words. Gen. No romance at this point in the story. Author’s note at the end.

Lost somewhere between the stars

Gohan had changed greatly in past months. Since he had been taken from Earth, he had spent time on two different planets and travelling through space. He was not sure how much time had actually passed. Three months? Four months? He did not even kept track of passing days any more; not to mention that ‘days’ lasted for different amounts of time on foreign worlds.

His limbs became thinner, lean muscles clearly visible now. His skin became darker, tanned by the alien suns, and rougher from staying outdoors all of the time, covered with many scratches and bruises. His eyes looked wild, his expression cautious and guarded. His hair became longer and messier, and now flea-like insects made their home in it. All he wore were tattered rags. You couldn't say he was too clean, either. Illuminated by dim light inside of the space pod, he appeared half feral.

At the moment, Gohan was calm and unalarmed. His breath was steady and he made himself comfortable on his uncle’s lap. He leaned against Raditz's chest and watched as the other made adjustments to the flight path of the spacecraft, or at least that’s what Gohan assumed he was doing. Their journey was nearing its destination.

An outline of irregular massive rock emerged from surrounding blackness, illuminated by the light of nearby stars. Gohan recalled reading a book back on Earth, where such rocks were dubbed as asteroids. A glimmer of reflected light caught his eye and brought his attention to metallic-clear cut surfaces that contrasted with uneven face of the asteroid.

The pod dropped onto the landing pad of a space station. 'Station Theta', as Raditz informed him.

Once he exited the craft, Gohan glanced in every direction and sniffed the air in hopes of absorbing as much information as possible about this new place. The premises seemed positively deserted. It was very cold.

"Come," Raditz urged Gohan, who trotted after him without objections. Raditz wasn't in any hurry. It was just that the small child needed to move his legs much faster than very tall Saiyan to keep up.

They passed through a heavy door and entered one of the rooms along the corridor. Inside stood several pieces of equipment, which looked vaguely like what Gohan expected cupboards in an alien space station to look like. The design was reminiscent of the space pod, albeit the pieces of equipment were not entirely spherical in shape, just somewhat curvy. On the opposite wall stood a transparent door that lead to another empty room.

"Disinfection Chamber," informed Raditz. "Strip!" He ordered, without further explanation.

Gohan did as he was told. He didn't want to, it was already too cold for his liking. Raditz also stripped bare and crammed his things into one of the cabinets.

Gohan stood naked and barefooted, awkwardly clutching the remains of his once fine and vibrantly colorful clothes to his chest. Goosebumps covered his tanned skin.

"Just drop them. Those are hardly good for anything anymore. We'll find you some new ones," Raditz offered. Once the rags laid on the floor, he incinerated them with precision and left just a small pile of soot.

Next, Raditz opened another cupboard and gestured to Gohan to come closer.

"Swallow this and drink up," Raditz ordered. He placed a small reddish pill in Gohan's palm and gave him a cup of water. Gohan observed he was not the only one undergoing this treatment, as Raditz put a similar pill in his mouth and chugged a healthy dose of water.

A moment later, he gave Gohan another cup along with a new set of instructions: "Just rinse your mouth. Don't swallow. Spit it out when it starts to feel hot."

Gohan obeyed diligently. He did not want to spit on the floor, so he settled for spitting the disgusting substance back into the cup he had received it in.

Next Raditz knelt before Gohan and gently lifted his face up with one hand. "Close your eyes." He wiped Gohan’s eyes with a wet pad. Then he bent over the small boy once again, a small dial in one hand. He steadied the boy's face once again. "Keep your eyes open, ‘till I'm done," he ordered. Cautiously, he administered an unknown concoction.

For a moment, Gohan lost his sight and the discomfort forced him to close his eyes. Quietly uttered curses informed him that Raditz had most likely subjected himself to the same treatment. When he opened his eyes again, the world was still swimming.

Raditz continued the procedures that Gohan learned later were a preliminary part of the standard disinfection process. He put transparent clamps around Gohan’s eyes that stuck to the boy’s sockets with what felt like suction. Lastly, he placed a breathing device over Gohan's nose.

"Inhale. You better keep your eyes shut once the process starts and don't open your mouth," Raditz advised and placed a breathing device over his own nose.

Raditz opened the transparent door, and together they entered the disinfection chamber. Next, he pressed some buttons on the command panel near the door. The last thing Gohan saw before he shut his eyes tightly was some sort of gas or steam filling the chamber.

Bright light temporarily blinded him even through closed eyelids. Then came a blast of almost unbearable heat, followed by freezing chill. Gohan could feel the sound waves pass through his body, although he couldn't actually hear them. He was sure they changed frequency over time. At one point, Gohan felt powerful gusts of air, almost strong enough to carry him away, and he wondered if they were being sucked out into vacuum of the space.

He did not know how much time had passed before Raditz finally told him to open his eyes. Gohan felt nauseous. His limbs could barely support him and his skin crawled unpleasantly. Weakly, he followed his uncle out of the disinfection chamber. His hair, like Raditz's, was ruffled and tangled and stood up in every direction, more so than usual.

"I hate the procedure," Raditz complained. "But you get used to it after few times." He removed his items from the cupboard; Gohan assumed it was a 'disinfection chamber' for clothes and equipment.

"Now to get you some clothes," Raditz proclaimed. He looked down at Gohan who, after exiting the disinfection chamber, shook like a leaf from the cold.

Raditz put his shorts back on and readjusted the garters around his thigh and bicep. He pulled on his boots but didn't bother with the rest of his gear. He grumbled that his armor was useless, so he stuck it under one arm and left the room.

Gohan hurried after him.

On the way, Raditz made various stops to press buttons and push some levers.

"There is no one here besides us, is there?" Gohan risked a question. After the time the two had spent together, he was no longer scared of Raditz per se. That did not mean he wasn't wary of him, or that he trusted him. In Gohan's experience, Raditz proved to have a bad temper and erratic mood. So far, he had not done anything worse to Gohan than slapping him, but each of his strikes easily sent the little boy to the ground.

"'S right. The station was abandoned long time ago, before we made it our base," Raditz explained. "It comes with its own set of problems, but beats staying in Frieza's barracks. We've been using here since... a few years ago in your terms now." The 'we' in Raditz’ explanation meant - of course - him and the two other Saiyans.

They arrived at a room of substantial size. It was not entirely dark, as in one corner lamps, which presumably simulated solar light, shone over crates filled with soil and some forlorn-looking plants.

On the shorter wall was a large window that showed the stars outside. As far as Gohan could tell, the room was mostly empty. Near the centre was a circle of what looked like stones surrounded by all manners of blankets or covers and big, stuffed sacks. On the one side of the circle stood the only bigger piece of furniture in the room, if you could call it that. It was a structure Gohan immediately identified as the 'nest' and was easily big enough to fit five or six adult Saiyans. Later, he learned it had been constructed from several 'standard' sleeping platforms that had belonged to the original equipment of the space station. To suit more Saiyan sensibilities regarding sleeping spots, it was padded with all sort of soft items: pelts, blankets, pillows, delicate shawls to feathery boas and even, surprisingly enough, one or two plush toys.

Raditz casually dropped his burden and strolled to the center of the room.

"That's our main living area," he explained, "We sleep here. That is, us and Nappa. Vegeta sleeps elsewhere." He knelt by the 'stone' circle and suddenly a fire blazed up. Only, Gohan observed, it wasn't real fire. There was nothing burning, although he could feel the warmth radiating from the direction of the stones from his place slightly behind Raditz. It did not keep him from shivering.

Raditz grabbed one of the blankets from the floor and then stood up. He promptly dropped it on Gohan's head before the boy made any move to get closer to the "fire".

"Standard electric light on this station is pretty unpleasant. You'll see. So we got this thing instead. Pretty neat, huh?" Raditz stated.

Gohan nodded and wrapped himself in the piece of fabric. At least that gave him some protection from the cold.

"Come. We are going to find you something to wear in the armory." Raditz walked to one of the doors in the room, but not the same they first had come through.

Gohan obediently trotted after him.

The armory turned out to be a complex of several rooms, all filled with different kinds of equipment. Gohan noted that there was much more stuff than the Saiyans could possibly need and a lot of it seemed to be of little use to them in the first place.

Raditz found Gohan a short sleeved shirt that hung loosely on his frame and a pair of shorts, which tended to slide down unless he held them up by wrapping his tail around his waist. To Gohan’s relief, they were almost knee length (and not the ‘only-cover-your-ass’ variety Raditz wore). Unfortunately, there were no boots in Gohan's size, the smallest set of armor was too big for him and there were no decent forearm guards or gloves. Frustrated, Raditz tossed Gohan pairs of leg warmers for both his legs and forearms, and explained they were essentially made from the same substance as standard armor. That should give him at least some protection.

Thus Gohan remained barefooted for the time being, save for the too large leg warmers, which slid down past his ankles and covered some of his feet around the heels.

Gohan wondered briefly why military equipment came in child sizes, then concluded it either had to do with Saiyan lifestyle, or that some alien species only grew as big as human children.

Once he dressed, Raditz suggested they grab something to eat and then take a tour around the station.

The kitchen and food storage rooms were located on the opposite side of the living area that used to be a canteen before the station had been abandoned.

When they arrived in the kitchen Raditz put a huge pot on the stove, big enough to hold enough food to satisfy both of them and then some, but by far not the largest available. He filled it with some water, threw in a considerable amount of freeze-dried meat, and said that it needed some time to cook. Absentmindedly, he hurled a small piece of cold, dry meat to Gohan as well.

Gohan sniffed at the scrap in his hands. It smelled different from anything he had eaten before, was - quite frankly- hard and cold, and did not look appetizing at all. He nibbled at it and tried not to think about the even less appetizing things he had eaten not so long ago.

Meanwhile, Raditz brought some dry rations from the storage. He gave Gohan a bar that could easily feed a grown man for two days. That is, a grown human man. For a Saiyan child, it was just a snack.

They returned to the main living area.

"That's Nappa's little project." Raditz pointed towards the crates with plants. "I don't know why he's taken to gardening, but there it is. Though I'm pretty sure none of the things growing here are the ones Nappa actually planted. I have no idea where these weeds came from," he went on. "He got real soil and all. Even got worms. To scarify the soil, so he says, like that is any help. Anyway-" he turned his gaze from plants to Gohan - "don't eat worms. If Nappa finds out, there'll be hell to pay. Trust me, it's not worth it."

Raditz shook his head. “Any reasonable space horticulture enthusiast would invest in hydroponic gel, hopefully to cultivate something edible, instead of playing in the mud,” he mumbled. They left the room to explore further.

Raditz wore a tank top now. Gohan had not seen where he produced the article of clothing from, or when he put it on. In his mind, he pictured Raditz pulling it out of his thick hair like some cartoon character. The thought made Gohan smile.

Raditz noticed the smile, and not knowing what caused it, sent Gohan a self assured smirk.

They walked down the corridor while Raditz explained what laid behind each door as they passed. Sometimes, they stopped to look.

"That's Vegeta's place. Used to be captain's quarters. Don't even think about going in there, unless you're ordered to clean it up," Raditz warned. Gohan could not imagine willingly going near Vegeta or into any space he considered his.

"Here's the tactical room. You can go in here, except when there's a tactical meeting. You're probably going to be invited when you're older, and then you'll have to attend, but that'll be a while yet." Raditz leaned over the table in the center of the room and took something out from a box resting on the top of it. "You can take white, fluorescent markers and scribble on the corridor walls or whatever. There's a plenty of them to spare. We don't even need them. But, don't touch the colorful ones. We sometimes use those for planning." With that, he handed Gohan the felt pen he just fished out of the box. "Here. Keep this. It'll come in handy when I'll teach you how to read."

"But I know how to read and write already," Gohan protested. Despite that, he clutched the marker tightly. It was nice to have something for himself even if it was just a plain old felt-pen. Well, technically it was not plain old, at least not for Gohan. It was supposed to be fluorescent after all.

"Oh-" Raditz's brow arched. "So tell me, smart guy, what does that say?" He pointed towards a sign on the nearest wall."

"I...-" Gohan gulped. " I don't know those letters," he admitted.

Raditz laughed. "Seriously?"

Gohan nodded and sighed inwardly with relief. At least Raditz appeared to be in good mood today.

"What got you so freaked?" Raditz sneered. " Whatever. It's not a big problem. Sucks you have to learn to read again, but it'll probably be easier if you already can read your planet's writing."

They continued the tour. The toilets and cleaning facilities differed from their Earth counterparts and Raditz had to explain how to use everything. Oddly enough, he seemed to find it entertaining. Then again, Gohan had noticed quite a while ago that the Saiyan liked to talk, especially when he was in good mood. It was not even particularly important what he was talking about.

The med bay was a wonder to behold - it would make medical professionals on Earth jealous. It was filled with the advance tools for conventional surgeries, diagnostic equipment, and medication that they could ever wish for, all organized neatly, and at their disposal.

Gohan approached a huge machine that looked like a peculiar, empty fish tank, wondering what it was for.

"It's a healing tank." Raditz proceeded to explain the purpose of the machine.

Gohan was fascinated, but he soon learned that machine was unfortunately not to be used.

"Healing liquid for the tanks is made from nano-machines, nutritions and bacteria, or some shit like that," Raditz said. "It can only be used for a short period before it expires, since it's bioactive and all that. But it takes rather long time to brew up, longer that we usually stay here. 'S why it's expensive to use healing tanks. That and all the restrictions put on the technology, you know, to leech off the poor suckers who need it. So even though we have a healing tank here, and even have all the ingredients to make the liquid, it is too impractical to use." He sighed. "If we need to, we can use the healing tanks in any of the Frieza's bases. It's costly. More than it should be. But no other place I know would allow Saiyans to use their tanks."

"Come. I'll show you the mechanical workshops," Raditz offered.

Workshops were located near the landing area. There were several; all but one were restricted to Gohan. He was not allowed to go in without supervision. The last one was filled with broken equipment, which was of little use, save perhaps spare parts or materials for mending less destroyed machines. Raditz told Gohan that he could tinker with it (or destroy it even more) if he liked.

"You can run around the corridors and play how you like. Just keep out of all the places I told you about, and don't open any sealed door." The station had been designed to house around 300 people; the Saiyans decided to seal away significant part of it to minimize costs of exploration. Still, it felt empty with so few of them.

"I can play?" Gohan inquired.

Raditz regarded him quizzically, as if he did not know what to make of the question.

"Yeah, once you're done with training and all your chores for the day, you can do whatever you like." He looked at Gohan wistfully and placed one hand on top of the boy's head to ruffle his hair. "It sucks that you have no other kids to play with. Not much fun."

"What kind of chores do I have to do here?" asked Gohan.

"You're on a cleaning duty indefinitely, pal." Raditz grinned. "Don't worry, it's not that much work. Bots clean a better part of the station. Except for our main room and Vegeta's quarters. There's usually something to clean in the kitchen as well. Eh, basically you clean whatever anyone tells you to. I'll show you how to work the cleaning equipment, but we still have time ‘till Vegeta and Nappa are back, so there's no hurry."

��"And that is everything?"

"Yeah. Pretty much." Raditz shrugged. "That, and you'll be helping me in the kitchen when I ask. If you were bigger, I’d have you cook. But for now you are simply too small to move pots, so that'll have to wait. I will teach you how to do all the maintenance work for the station and our ships too, but all in due time."

Gohan nodded. That he could do. That wasn't so bad. Just regular house work. Or as regular as you got on alien space stations. Plus, he would be learning more about real spaceships. And that was cool.

Next they went to the training room. It was bigger than the living area. Raditz explained how it was the largest room in the station, except for the hangars. The ceiling was high to provide enough space for flight training, which was very fortunate, since Gohan had just learned to float in the air and was still in serious need of practice.

"Since we are already here we might as well do some warm up," said Raditz.

"Are we going to spar?" Gohan asked.

"Tomorrow." Raditz looked at Gohan critically. "As much as we need to make a capable fighter out of you, we both need some rest. Today we just warm up our muscles and do some stretching. Gods know we need it after being stuck in the damn pod for so long."

Gohan did not question it. He just started with his regular regime, and Raditz began his own.

Doing exercises warmed him up. He did not need to wrap himself with the blanket any more.

"Hungry," asked Raditz when they were done. "Me too. Back to the kitchen we go," he ordained as Gohan's stomach growled. He looked the boy over. "We need to put some meat on those bones."

They went back to the kitchen. The soft sound of Gohan's bare toes patting against cold floors followed the louder taps of Raditz's boots along chilly, empty corridors. The kitchen was much warmer when they arrived.

"Come!" Raditz signaled with his head that he wanted Gohan to go to the storage rooms before he disappeared behind the next set of doors. "Carry those!" he instructed once Gohan joined him, and placed parcels of culinary ingredients in the boy's outstretched arms. He took a large stack of packages.

Back at the cooking area, Raditz dropped his burden on the counter near the stove. He took the parcels from Gohan and placed them there as well. After a second of consideration, he snatched up Gohan by his growing hair and also placed him on the counter next to the food supplies.

Cooking was fun. Raditz let Gohan smell and try every new thing he unpacked before he threw the rest in the pot. Gohan liked sampling even though most things, which were apparently freeze-dried vegetables and some types of spices or herbs, did not taste very good on their own. Raditz also explained what each thing was and in some cases provided useful information about them.

Sitting on the countertop, Gohan felt he was at least learning something. And was having was fun.

Raditz was enjoying himself as well. To Gohan, who was getting better and better at reading his moods, it was apparent by the way he smiled.

"We need to make a supply run soon," Raditz informed while he stirred the stew. "We still have a safe amount of food here, even for four Saiyans, but there's no variety." Almost as an afterthought, he added: "And we're almost out of booze."

"What is booze?" asked Gohan, who was very young and did not know what the word meant, though he thought he had heard the adult Saiyans mention it at times.

"That? Liquor, you know, alcoholic drink." Raditz explained.

"Like that thing Grandpa drinks that sometimes makes him act funny?"

Raditz laughed. "Yes! That."

"Mommy says I'm not allowed to drink that it until I'm eighteen."

"And why is that?" Raditz inquired with some skepticism.

"Because alcohol is bad for growing," Gohan explained. "And for learning," he added.

"In that case, there's no booze for you till you're eighteen," Raditz decided thoughtfully. "Sorry, pal." At that point, he started to mix what he proclaimed to be minced grains and dried egg powder with water in a huge bowl.

"It'll be ready soon." he announced and poured the contents of the bowl into the boiling pot.

After the stew was cooked they went back to the living area, or the 'cave', as Gohan started to mentally dub it. Raditz carried the steaming pot, while Gohan was tasked with bringing some dishes and spoons.

The food was okay, but certainly better than anything Gohan had eaten in the last few months. After several helpings, they started to talk once again.

"How d'you like my cooking?" Raditz asked. He sat on one of the bag-things around the artificial bonfire. Gohan sat nearby on the pelt just next to the 'fire'.

"It's good," Gohan said. "But not as good as dishes my Mommy makes," he risked.

"I bet." Raditz apparently wasn't surprised nor upset in the least. "It's not as good as the food mine used to make. Hell. I can do better with fresh ingredients," he claimed.

"You didn't cook when... You didn't cook when we were on the planets," Gohan stated with question hanging in the air.

"Too little time," Raditz explained. "I'd have to look for pots, as we hardly can take any with us in our pods. Besides, I know little about edible stuff we find on each new planet. It's safer not to mix."

That sure made sense, given everything Gohan had learned so far about surviving on foreign planets.

"So, what do you want to do today?"Raditz asked after they both ate their fill.

"Teach me to read your writing!" Gohan blurted without a second thought.

"That's it? I told you we have this day to rest and what you want to do is... learn to read?" Raditz was perplexed.

"Yeah... and about space travel." Gohan flushed. "We don't have such technology on Earth. I want to know how to pilot a spaceship."

Raditz blinked. Gohan was apparently very excited by the idea of learning new things. Light shone in his eyes and the corners of his slightly agape mouth rose up.

"Okay."

"Really?!" Joy spread across Gohan's features as he jumped a little in place, tail swinging with anticipation.

Raditz grinned then rose up. "Yes. really. Come, let us find a piece of a wall to write down all the signs."

Gohan jumped up eagerly. At last, he was permitted to study something again.

"Learning piloting and navigating in space will take some time. You'll have to learn a lot of complicated math to be able to do it," Raditz warned.

"That's great. I love maths."

Raditz blinked again, surprised, then laughed aloud. "Man, you're weird little cub."

Gohan dimmed and sunk a little. "I'm sorry."

"What the fuck are you sorry for now?" Raditz asked, exasperated.

"For being weird," Gohan said quietly after a moment of quiet.

Raditz sighed. "Whatever. It's not a problem."

A suitable wall was not difficult to find. In fact, they settled for one in the nearest corridor leading to lavatory.

"Give me your pen," Raditz requested.

When Gohan handed over his marker after a barely noticeable moment of hesitation, Raditz wrote down all the signs of the syllabary that served as a standard writing system for interstellar travellers in this part of the cosmos, then explained what each sign stood for. Next,Gohan wrote down their meanings in Earth's alphabet. They repeated the same procedure for the numbers.

Gohan was a fast learner. Soon Raditz suggested they find some reading material to test Gohan's memory and practice reading further. Gohan learned that literature was a rare commodity in interstellar society. All that could be found on the market were different types of manuals. Books were stored on data crystals that were placed in a tablet-like device in order to be read. Mindful of Gohan's earlier declaration regarding interest in space travel, Raditz suggested they start with a navigation manual.

Before they continued with the reading lesson, Raditz insisted they take a break for a snack. Gohan happily agreed. They finished what remained of the stew Raditz had cooked earlier, but it was too little to satisfy their appetites. So Raditz produced two big jars from the pantry.

"It's cream made from puza fruit cores. It's good." He gave Gohan one of the jars and they went back to the 'cave'.

The treat inside the jar turned out to be very sweet and kind of nutty. It tasted as if someone had mixed peanut butter with equal amount of sugar. In Gohan’s opinion it was not very tasty, but it was very filling and satisfying.

The navigation manual turned out to be a difficult read, even though Gohan easily remembered all the signs of the syllabary and all the numbers. Unfortunately there were many other mathematical signs they had not covered beforehand and Raditz had to explain what they meant. In addition, there were numerous terms Gohan did not know and that he always asked to have explained. The lesson turned out to be tedious work for Raditz.

Raditz stretched out as much as he could with Gohan sitting on his lap, tablet in hands. He looked at the boy.

"Tell you what, we're finished for today."

"Okay. Can we go back to it tomorrow."

"Ha. Told you, you're weird. No other cub would be able to sit still and read for this long, much less look forward to more."

"This is very interesting." Gohan curled a little bit in himself and murmured: "I like when you teach me things."

"Right." Raditz turned to look somewhere else but smirked. He put his hand in Gohan's hair and tried to divide its strands with his fingers.

"Your hair needs some grooming," he stated. "So does mine." He pushed Gohan from his lap. "I need to find a needle. It's too tangled up to manage without a good, sturdy needle."

Gohan knew already that Saiyans did not use combs for their hair. Generally their hair routine was different from what Gohan remembered from Earth. Usually it involved taking out manually whatever local vermin had decided to make its home in the Saiyan’s hair. This procedure was preferably repeated every day. Gohan thought it rather impractical. Saiyans did not wash their hair with water, and when asked about shampoo Raditz just made a puzzled expression. Occasionally some of their hair became tangled up. Given the structure of Saiyan hair it did not happen too often to be a serious inconvenience, even for Raditz, whose hair fell easily past his knees. When it did happen, Raditz used a thin, sharpened stick, referred to as a ‘needle’, to untangle the knots. He kept one in his pod, but he often simply improvised one from whatever was around whenever needed. Gohan's hair, however, had different and more human-like texture. He really could use a comb.

After a moment Raditz returned with a suitable needle, a small device which turned out to be like miniature vacuum cleaner, a bottle of sanitizing liquid, and cleaning pads.

Now that Gohan knew the interstellar syllabary, he could read the label on the bottle; it proclaimed the substance inside was suitable for mammalian skin.

Raditz told Gohan to use the sanitizer if his skin still itched after the disinfection procedure. It helped.

Together, they managed to untangle the chaos that was Raditz’ enormous mane of hair. As expected, this took some time. Gohan learned that the small vacuum machine is used to remove all bits of safely dead and sterilized fauna or flora that remained attached after disinfection. It was cleaner and quicker than picking everything out by hand.

As soon as they were finished, Raditz sat Gohan on his lap and started patiently untangling the boy's hair strand by strand until he could freely move his fingers between Gohan's locks. Then he rubbed sanitizer into Gohan’s scalp. Gohan thought it was very calming, pleasant even, but after it was done he needed to have his hair untangled once again, albeit this time it did not take as long. When Gohan's hair was finally smoothed out again Raditz grabbed him under his armpits and moved him from his lap to over one shoulder and then stood up.

"We have shit to do tomorrow," Raditz proclaimed. He strolled for the nest with Gohan draped over his shoulder and dropped them both on the soft bedding.

The nest was full of scents. It felt oddly comforting to Gohan. He quickly concluded that Saiyans selected items for building their sleeping spot not only to provide protection from the cold, or even a soft place to rest, but because they liked the smell.

"It'll be several days before Vegeta and Nappa come back," Raditz said. He lay on his side, head resting on his bended arm. "We need to have everything running in perfect order in here by then."

Gohan sat and brought his knees to his chest. He looked at Raditz warily. He didn't like where this was going. Today had been a good day in Gohan's book, the best day he had since leaving Earth. He wanted things to continue being like today.

"They are going to be in the bad mood when they arrive from Frieza's base." Raditz sighed. "I guess there's no need to worry about it now." He placed a hand Gohan's head again. "So... you like it in here, don't you?"

"It's not bad," Gohan admitted.

"Maybe not," Raditz agreed, but the look on his face was peculiarly sad. " 'S the closest things we have to home now."

Gohan felt that Raditz included him in that statement. He wondered if he would ever be able to return home, but he wasn't allowed to dwell on that thought long as Raditz spoke once again.

"We rest now." With that, he moved his hand from Gohan's head to his shoulder and pushed him with enough force to topple him over. "Sleep!" he ordered in a soft voice.

Gohan laid for a short while in the same spot with open eyes. He glanced at Raditz, whose eyes were closed and his breath was evening out, but Gohan suspected he was not asleep just yet.

The light grew dimmer. Maybe the artificial fire was reacting to the lack of movement in the room, or maybe it was programmed to reflect day-and night time.

Gohan drew closer to Raditz and curled against his chest. It was warm and comfortable. Gohan inhaled Raditz's smell. He had gotten used to it. It was calming and somehow it made him feel safe. It was weird. Gohan was always wary of Raditz when the latter was awake. But he liked him when he was asleep. It was comforting to sleep next to him.

If only things could always be this way! But no, Vegeta was coming in several days. Gohan’s heart pounded. He didn't need to think about it now. He did not want to think about it now. He just wanted the present now. Not the past. There were things in the past, things better left untouched. And not the future. He just wanted here and now. It felt safe to be enveloped in Raditz’ scent. His heart rate calmed.

A tail brushed along his leg and lightly wrapped itself around him. Gohan pressed himself closer to his uncle's chest and reached out his own tail to wrap around Raditz.

He was falling asleep.

They still had several more days, right?

Authors note

Hey, so what is this story even about? Well, first you can think about this piece as pilot of bigger story I may or may not write. But it is not necessary how the story should star, have I actually write it. It may or may not be the first part - or chapter.

It is obviously a take on popular in DBZ fandom premise: Raditz takes Gohan to space. However it is not a "what if" story. It is not a re-telling of the plot of the manga nor the anime. The genre is probably psychological. Don't expect story to be action driven. I do not want to spoil the plot - I'm not going to tell you where this is going. And I'm not going to explain what had happened before Raditz and Gohan made it to this point just yet.

But I should probably tell you something if I expect you to get interested in whatever I'm doing here, right? Okay, so in most rudimentary words it is a story about Raditz rising Gohan and about Gohan growing together with Saiyans. I stress the word "rising", because Raditz is rising Gohan here, rather than just training him. Of course he is still training Gohan, that is just not the point of the story. This of course rises a few questions: How this situation would influence Gohan on various levels? What would it mean for Raditz? In my take Raditz is actually motivated to rise Gohan as a Saiyan rather than making him as powerful as possible in shortest time with absolutely no regard for his life let alone safety. Granted Raditz is still a terrible person with selfish motivations, but not all of his motives are "evil" either. He is in an awful situation as well.

There is going to be something about life and relationships between last remaining Saiyans. And something about team from Earth. ChiChi and Goku are going to want their son back, of course. Bulma will help. If I manage to continue this to the end Lunch will make an appearance.

Saiyans still work under Frieza, but they are much more autonomous, than in most other fics. They have sort of their own base of operations, even if they still tend to use PTO facilities from time to time. They are not so strictly controlled either

Expect different forms of abuse. But no sexual abuse, at least not among major characters. Oh, and this is story about Saiyans mainly, so expect unsetting inhuman things here and there. Like having (a sapient) alien for a dinner.

First tidbit I promised, Spartans visit Bloodgulch! (kinda a long one, also available @ http://archiveofourown.org/works/7381261/chapters/21437807 )

“And you’re definitely sure this is going to work?” Yang asked this to Winter with a scowl on her face, still not having any respect for the Spartan-IV program’s first volunteer, who stood tall in front of a control panel for the base’s simulation pods. Winter turned to face the Spartan-II, and began stepping towards her, “This simulation is fine tuned by yours truly, it won’t suffer from any of the possible errors that an everyday human could make,” Winter slowly became less stable as she walked closer and closer to Yang, her body fizzing out like static, as her holographic projector could only reach so far, “the si-si-si-simulation i-itself,” Winter’s body began to erratically spasm itself out of proportion before fizzing out completely. “Great, and we’re going to trust this thing?” Yang turned to her teammates, looking at them hoping for an answer. None came, Blake was at her pod’s system controls, mapping her own loadout for the simulated mission, Ruby was whispering to an angry looking Weiss, her irritation only being proven by the flashes of red lights flickering under her skin, as well as her promethean eye flaring a red color, “Ugh, whatever.” Yang walked over to her own pod, selecting her average loadout of an M45-Shotgun and her favorite to use; The Spankr-Prime. After setting in her choices of weaponry, she walked over to Blake, who was still diligently choosing through the endless lists of UNSC gear, “Yang, for this simulation do you think you can equip yourself with some extra M225 Semi-armor-piercing high-explosive rounds? With the tactical equipment I’m bringing I won’t be able to haul extra magazines.” With a slight wink, Yang agreed, “You got it princess,” she then leaned back onto Blake’s pod, tapping her arm with a light hearted punch, “So, how about after this simulation we go do som-” Blake cut Yang’s approach off with a snarl, “Look Xiao Long, just shut up and get ready for the simulation okay? We don’t need to unprepared like last time.” “Sheesh, fine whatever.” Yang stomped away back to her own pod to input the new equipment she’s meant to hold.

Meanwhile Winter’s holographic projection jolts back to life, continuing to tinker with the simulation laws, “Sister. I’m sorry but you’ll be without me for this simulation, since I cannot function as both your active duty A.I. and prevent anything from going wrong on this end of the program.” Weiss nods, slightly nervous, the lights flowing under her skin pulsing a slight deep blue of worry. Until Ruby taps her with her elbow, “No worries Weiss, I’ve got ya.” “Ri-Right, thank you Spartan Ro-Ruby, thank you Ruby.”

Winter piped up again, looking over to the team of Spartans, “Make your final preparations, simulation will commence in two minutes. I repeat, two minutes.”

With that, Yang opened her simulation pod and put on her helmet, the gold color shining bright, she rolled her shoulders and stepped into the pod, looking over and seeing her teammates do the same. Cracking her neck as the pod closed over her, she mentally readied herself.

“Comm check, Spartan Rose.” “Comm check, Spartan Schnee.” “Comm check, Spartan Belladonna.” With a deep breath, “Comm check, Spartan Xiao Long.”

“Okay Spartans, prepare yourself. Simulation titled, ‘Reclaim New Pheonix’ is starting in 3....2...1.”

With that Yang felt the familiar yet still surprising sucker punch to her gut as her brain frantically tries to comprehend how her body is now in the middle of the Sol system’s Earth, standing on her two feet in scorching heat. However, her suit’s internal system didn’t engage the visor reactivation, so she was standing in pitch black. “Great...just great, manual override, initiate visor reactivation, run suit diagnostics.” Almost completely silent, but still hardly audible, Yang heard a small scoff of annoyance, “Oh Raven, good to know you’re still bouncing around my head.” “Shut up,” The grouchy voice was still as unforgiving as ever, “I’m the only thing that’s been keeping you alive you useless fool.” Yang closed her eyes to keep her temper down, and attempted to shake her head, being stopped due to her suit being immobilized, “Oh no...is my whole suit on shut down?” “Huh....looks like it.” Yang gritted her teeth at Raven’s apathy, “So...do SOMETHING.” “Fine fine, reinstating suit systems. Deactivating safety paralysis. Reinsta-” Yang stopped Raven immediately, “Safety...paralysis? Why is it safety paralysis?” Before she could answer, if she would even bother to, Yang’s visor reactivated to show her absolutely nothing, nothing but blue skies, “Oh....okay?” She then slowly turned her head, seeing the ground which happened to be hundreds of feet away, she then panicked and looked down towards her feet seeing her body laying cautiously on the edge of a cliff top. The fright of this all itself caused Yang’s body to twitch, throwing herself screaming off the edge of the cliff and towards the impending ground. She could only brace herself and hope for the best.

“Spartan Xiao Long, wake up, wake up.” With a groan Yang sat up, gripping onto her helmet, opening her eyes she could see her team standing around her. Ruby and Weiss kneeling down on either side of her and Blake standing at her feet, looking around the unfamiliar canyon. Almost immediately Yang jumped up and grabbed Weiss by her helmet’s face, “YOU, YOU AND YOUR GODDAMN A.I. SISTER DID THIS!” Weiss pitifully grabbed onto Yang’s arm, unable to overpower the Spartan-II, as a panicked Ruby quickly rushes to Weiss’s aid, “YOU NEED TO FIX THIS, NOW.” “Yang,” Blake sounded annoyed, but no differently than usual, “release our teammate now.” Yang stared at Blake, who was holding her M6G-Magnum only inches from her visor, Yang could only pant in anger as she looked back over to a struggling Weiss, the bright blue visor almost completely blocked out of site by Yang’s hand. “Fine,” Yang grunted, tossing Weiss several feet away, “Not like I could kill her or anything, just a simulation.” “But a simulation of what?” Blake knelt down besides Weiss, “You’ve any idea?” “Promethean databases have connected what we’ve seen so far to a place named ‘Blood Gulch’. Old proving grounds for Spartans during the war with the Covenant.” “Blood Gulch huh,” Ruby pauses to think, “Not a very pleasant name...and definitely NOT New Pheonix...” Yang shook her head, and dropped to a sitting position, and started talking to herself, “Okay Yang, let’s see. Just calm down and think....yeah...hey Blake?” “What is it Xiao Long?” Yang ignored the sharp bite of her tone, “Look, what type of equipment did you bring, anything that can help us out here? Blake looked a little shocked, whether it was because Yang remembered this or not, she couldn’t tell, “Just a portable ground sonar, probably the only thing that can be of use.” “Good idea Yang,” Ruby stood up and brought Weiss up to her feet with her, “Blake, set it up.”

Withing minutes, Blake had the machine running, around the size of a child, the thing certainly wasn’t small. “No wonder you needed me to carry your ammo.” “Speaking of that,” Ruby spoke up, “Everyone do a double check on weapons and ammo, we don’t know what exactly is here...” “Hey have you guys seen my dad?” Weiss jumped up and spun around with her DMR drawn, the rest of the team drew their weapons as well, and pointed them collectively in the direction of the voice. Weiss was the first to speak, “Come out, and speak up.” They were all shocked as a small Sangheili walked out from behind the rocks, only causing them all to tense up even more, “My dad. Some background first, i was hit from behind whilst stationary in traffic the other week by a works van. the damage was not too sever that i couldn't limp back home (sore and car bashed but still alive) got the other drivers details at the scene and reported the incident to my insurance company. As the accident was not my fault my insurer passed this to their dedicated Non-Fault (NF) accident claim company (i'll not name them at the moment) who in turn provided me with a hire car and collected my car to have it assessed for REPAIR. At no point was writing off the car mentioned. Then i got a call from the garage dealing with my car (NF appointed) a week later telling me of the damage and repair value and that the engineers working for the NF, different company again, were going to deem the car a write off, CAT D as i later found out. Now the fun part - the engineers have made an offer for settlement and to write off of my car, which is a good 500 below what is would cost to replace it with a like-for-like car in my local area (replace cost circa 2.8k-3k) they are adamant they will not repair my car even though the repairs would cost LESS than the write off - because the repair is too close to the market value and they can make a killing on salvage apparently. so fighting this out at the moment. NOW FOR THE QUESTION: They have advised me that should i wish to keep the car after they write it off (which i want to avoid if at all possible) i can accept the settlement and pay them a salvage fee to retain my car. This i understand as technically they buy my car when they write it off and then i have to buy it back. The problem is that they have a flat 30% !!! salvage fee which on their offer would almost negate me being able to get the repairs covered. What i really need to know is if anyone else has been in this position and if there is a maximum salvage fee they can charge - bearing in mind that this is my car to start with - and if there is any way i can make them drop this percentage. Forcing them to drop the percentage might not only let me repair the car after retaining but might also swing in favour of repair instead of write off if they cannot justify such a big payout for themselves. Any help here would be appreciated fast as i'm still bouncing between the parties here to get this resolved. In case your wondering the damage constitutes a bumper rear panel and a kink in the boot floor - VERY repairable.""

Saul Bass

For our final major project his was the first case study that the entire class would participate in. The artist that we were tasked to investigate was Saul Bass, one the most famous graphic designers in the 20th century whose work was often described as ‘timeless ’. He is most famously known for his work in the 1950’s with the design work involving silhouettes and minimalism. In this study I will be dissecting the effectivity of the artwork by the imagery he was trying to represent through imagery and visual language. After identifying the key methods we would experiment with our own work and compare them.

Task: 1

For our first objective we were tasked with dissecting three known pieces of Bass’s artwork to eventually compare and contrast them. The three pieces were ‘ Autonomy of Murder’, a Girls Scout logo and ‘Bunny is missing’. By the end session I came to the simple conclusion that Saul Bass’s work is aptly described as timeless because of its simplicity, it is open to many forms of interpretation. Thus no matter who views his work, everyone would take something different from it.

All of the pieces of work include the basic art design of using silhouettes, fore and background, shading and some typography. The missing poster uses these visuals to create a imaginative composition that fully represents the phrase ‘ less is more’. The imagery that is created is a sense of loss and/ or isolation which was possible with the use of a graphic method called ‘looking room’. The definition of said method is the amount of space between the subject and the edge of the screen’. The impression I obtained from this work is that the child has been taken from their family hence the shape of the image of the child is literally torn from the paper. Like the child has been torn from their family. I also get the feeling that there is some sort of time limit as the edge of one the hands is still connected to the border. The white represents the hope, positivity and family connection the child has whereas the black represents the negative representation of maybe the emotions of the people involved or what/ who ever taken the child in the first place. Having the black paper torn and taking up such a large amount of space gives me the visual idea of it showing that the emptiness the family feels like something was torn from them. Like a hole that could never be filled again. Also, the style of the writing and composition gives the impression of an missing person poster or article that would find in an newspaper.

The next graphic design is that of a logo instead of a poster and its main focus is visual shape whilst creating the effect

Visually the work is simplistic as Bass uses silhouettes to create compelling compositions with no features but no lack of hidden meaning. In the “Bunny is missing” poster, Bass experiments with the use of the “looking room”, which is the “amount of space between the subject and the edge of the screen they are facing”. He does this by organically tearing a sheet of black paper into the shape of a child to represent that the child has been forcibly taken from where they belong, the black paper represents this, and the disappearance of said child has left a lasting impression that cannot be fixed just like you cannot fix torn paper without there still being a tear. Also with the use of monochrome colours and the arrangement of the composition, the poster resembles a lost and found poster that you would find in the newspaper.

What is the effect of the visual language?

The forms and shapes Bass chooses to use represents the subject visually. In the case of the Girls Scouts logo, Bass has chosen to use the colour forrest green, as this relates it back to nature which is an element the Girls Scouts are involved with. The silhouette of three girls are also used, at first glance you assume they are all the same, however due to their placement in the logo you can argue that they are all different which symbolises how they are open to all girls who are all treated the same way.

Does the work send an immediate message or are there subtle parts that take awhile to digest?

Although his posters are easy to interpret at first glance, you do miss hidden details and messages if you only looked for a second. In the poster for “Anatomy of a murder”, you see what we interpret as a body due to the title and the fact the body is lying horizontally. The background is red which is connected to the appearance of blood and the body has been cut into pieces to show that it is being taken apart to look at the anatomy of the limbs, head and torso. When I first looked at the poster I hadn’t noticed that the body was cut into sections or that Bass had organically cut out the body from black paper himself which conjures up theories that perhaps this is rather a study of a body rather than a murder scene.

Why do you think the work could be described as timeless?

Silhouettes are a very popular way of designing posters and logo’s as it doesn’t give away much information, is simple and visually easy to understanding leaves it up to the viewers interpretation. Because the shapes and structures Bass uses for these silhouettes are universal due to their lack of identity, this means that they aren’t related to and can be associated with any time period.

In Bass’ film title sequences, they are also done in a 2D format with silhouettes and the movement is in sync with the sequence music.

In the Atonomy of Murder movie sequence, the use of 2D stop motion moves around the organically and hand rendered limbs (which makes it appear more sinister) of the body in time with the music to create more definition and emphasis. It also cuts away sections of the body to create the illusion that something is dissecting the body and really inspecting it which gives the viewer an indication that the genre might be mystery.

The title sequence for the movie Psycho is much sharp and sleeker than Anatomy of a murder due to its use of geometric shapes to subtract and slash areas of the screen and the composition. Instead of creating a maddening and chaotic sequence, Bass has decided to present the title Psycho as a more intelligent and calculating being but the constant slicing of the screen indicates the sinister undertone and the slipping of ones sanity.

Bass takes a different approach to the title sequence, Seconds, with the use of real black and white, 4D imagery that is distorted until it slowly transforms into a recognisable feature. He plays around with the scale and structure of the imagery to create unnerving and hypnotic sequences that are abstract and looks similar to when you manipulate an image using liquify on Photoshop.

We then looked at other artists who were also inspired by Bass’ work and began to note the key elements in his work.

1. Simple and universal silhouettes

2. Use of block colours (slightly off bright) to use as a “looking window”

3. The relationship between text and image

4. Using organic shapes, often hand rendered, to create exaggerated forms

5. The use of positive and negative space

Experiments:

After we noted down the key elements for Bass’ work, we then applied them to our own to create a variety of different outcomes using both hand rendered and digital processes. I decided to use one of my tree panels from my comic as a base for these experiments as they’re silhouettes and could easily be transformed into Bass’ work.

He is best known as the creator of the shooter game Space Invaders, released to the public in 1978 by the Taito Corporation of Japan, often credited as the first shoot 'em up[1] and for beginning the golden age of video arcade games.[2] Originally Nishikado wanted to use airplanes as enemies for Space Invaders, but would have encountered problems making them move smoothly due to the limited computing power at the time (the game was based on Intel's 8 bit 8080 microprocessor). Susan Kare

Susan Kare[1] (born February 5, 1954) is an artist and graphic designerwho created many of the interface elements and typefaces for the Apple Macintosh in the 1980s. She was also Creative Director (and one of the original employees) at NeXT, the company formed by Steve Jobs after he left Apple in 1985.[2] She has worked for Microsoft and IBM, and, more recently, Pinterest and Facebook.

According to Susan Kare, good icons should be more efficient like road signs rather than mere illustrations. They should be easily comprehended and keep the users from getting confused by extraneous details. She is of the view that out of million colors all the colors don’t need to be incorporated in the icons and that once a well-crafted and meaningful icon is designed it doesn’t need to be resigned frequently.

Blackview P10000 Pro Review: Is That a 11000 mAh Battery in Your Pocket…?

Our verdict of the Blackview P10000 Pro: This phone has an unbelievable battery life, but it's a bit of a brick, so be prepared for your trousers to fall down due to the weight!810

The Blackview P10000 Pro is a mid-range smartphone with a massive 11000 mAh battery. The six inch screen is accompanied by a chunky 10.3 oz weight. To put that in perspective, the iPhone X only weighs 6.14 oz. Let’s see what this phone can do, and if the extra battery life is worth the weight.

Features

Costing just over $200 at the time of writing, the P10000 Pro sports a Helio P23 octa-core processor, 4 GBs of RAM, and 64 GBs of storage. The 6 inch screen runs at just over 1080p, at 2160 x 1080, due to its 18:9 aspect ratio. This display is an IPS panel, manufactured by Sharp. It’s a reasonable display that produces a nice image. It would have been nice to see a UHD resolution, but that would significantly impact the battery life.

This processor is similar to the P25 found in the Blackview P6000, although it is slightly more energy efficient. Introduced in 2017, this CPU features multiple cores clocked at different speeds. This provides the best of both worlds. A single core clocked higher for good performance, and then the remaining cores clocked much lower, for significant energy reduction.

Face recognition and fingerprint sensors are present, as are dual front and rear cameras. A very light skin runs on top of Android 7.1 Nougat. Android 8.1 is “coming soon”, but don’t count on getting that anytime soon.

The bezel sizes are reasonable. To the left and right of the screen they are very thin. The top of the phone houses all of the speakers, cameras, and sensors, and it still manages to keep a fairly low profile. The bottom chin could be smaller, but it’s manageable.

The edges of the P10000 feature a contrasting metal finish. The fingerprint sensor is mounted on the right, as are the power and volume buttons. The beveled edges on the underside are manufactured from real leather, supposedly from Australian calfs. The rear is available in gloss grey or silver, or full leather, to match the beveled edges.

As the massive battery is the biggest feature of this phone, it’s covered later on in the “Battery Life” section. Suffice to say, 11000 mAh is enormous. Most phones sport between 2000 and 3000 mAh, with some “extended capacity” models reaching 4000 �� 5000 mAh.

This massive battery does come at the expense of size and weight, however. Not only is it nearly double the weight of other phones, but it measures nearly 0.6 inches thick!

The battery is non-removable, but you do get dual sim slots and a microSD card slot. There’s a noticeable lack of headphone jack, but you get a USB Type-C to 1/8th inch adapter, alongside a protective case and a 5V 5A quick charger, which is required to have any hope of charging the huge battery in a reasonable time frame.

Performance

The P10000 Pro performs surprisingly well. I previously noted that the P6000 (with slightly better processor) felt sluggish and unresponsive at times, but this is not the case with the P10000. The fingerprint sensor detects and unlocks the phone almost instantly.

Face recognition takes a moment, but it works well enough in good lighting conditions. It is slightly flawed, however. To use face unlock requires the screen to be powered on. As the placement of the fingerprint sensor is directly below the power button, you are almost always better off simply unlocking with your fingerprint in one go, rather than powering the screen on, and then using your face.

Games and apps all run smoothly, thanks in part to the ARM Mali G71 GPU. It’s rare to find a modern phone that struggles with many games, and the P10000 is no exception. 2D games run flawlessly, and even heavy hitter Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile runs fine, although you will need to reduce the graphics quality.

All of this heavy usage does little to diminish the mega battery, however.

Unfortunately, we were unable to benchmark the P10000 Pro using our favorite benchmarking tool Geekbench. Geekbench 4 installed fine, but refused to connect and run tests. We’re not sure if this is to do with the P10000 or Geekbench itself.

Based on the processor alone, you can expect to achieve ok, but not cutting-edge performance. This processor is so similar to the P25 used in the Blackview p6000 mentioned previously, that if you really have to know the numbers, then go take a look at that review.

Battery Life

The massive 11000 mAh battery is probably the single biggest selling point of the P10000 Pro. This allegedly provides enough power to run the phone for seven days. While seven days might be a bit of a stretch unless you are a very light user, you can realistically expect to achieve two to three days of solid use.

Blackview suggest the following usage times can be achieved:

Phone calls: 60 hours

Listening to music: 80 hours

Watching videos: 40 hours

Standby: 1200 hours (50 days)

Playing games: 18 hours

While some of these times are very optimistic, not all of them are impossible to achieve, especially if you limit the energy heavy usage such as the screen, wireless, or updates.

The included 5A quick charger is powerful enough to provide enough power for a whole days use with just 30 minutes of charging, or fully charge the whole battery in two hours 25 minutes. This is very impressive, but good luck finding a spare charger capable of delivering a similar amount of power.

As the P10000 Pro sports USB type-C 2.0, it’s possible to charge other USB devices. Sure, many other phones can handle this, but can they do so with battery life to spare?

This battery really is incredible, but you may be better off purchasing a better phone such as the OnePlus 5, or Google Pixel 2 and a $20 power bank. You’ll be able to carry the power bank in a bag, and avoid the hefty weight and thickness of this phone.

Image Quality

Image quality is reasonable enough in strong light or simpler scenes. The front facing cameras have two lenses. One for a wide angle, and the other for a minor zoom. The dual rear cameras work the same.

The included camera app is basic, but it gets the job done. You have several options for “fake bokeh”, or beauty mode. There’s a basic black and white filter provided, as well HDR mode. HDR modes takes multiple pictures at different exposures, then combine the images. You don’t have any additional configuration options, but it does a good job at capturing more detail in the shadows.

As you can see, the areas in shadow are quite dark. Here’s the same shot with HDR enabled:

The shadows have significantly improved, with no apparent delay or slow down. You’ll not be able to use any of the “fun” options (such as beauty mode) when shooting HDR, but it does an ok job at balancing a photo.

You could just shoot RAW photos on Android however, and achieve the same effect.

Moving onto video, you’ll be quite disappointed. While the camera can just about keep up for photos, it cannot for video. There’s no option to shoot in high frame rates, or even any resolution higher than 1080p. Footage struggles to look sharp, even if the colors are good.

The focus is capable of working accurately and fast, but it also tends to hunt around even after achieving perfect focus. Most high end phones (even those made in the last two or three years) can easily outdo the P10000 for photos and videos.

Should You Buy the Blackview P10000 Pro?

The Blackview P10000 Pro should certainly be on your list if you’re after possibly the best battery life of any phone ever. However, all that capacity comes at a cost. This phone is HUGE. Reasonable performance can be found once you get over the dimensions. Size isn’t everything, after all.

The 15″ model comes standard with a resolution of 1440×900. This can be upgraded to 1680×1050, something everyone should do. Apple uses a high-end TN display, so still no IPS unfortunately.

In the largest room, place the following objects: a cheap bookshelf, a work-out machine, a chess board with one chair, a gnome making desk, a preserve making desk, and a TV with a black lounge chair. If you want more money to spend on floors and wallpaper, then get a black-and-white mini TV. Otherwise, get a black 24″ TV. The first thing to do in Live Mode is get to a job. Only take jobs that have a daily pay of $200 or more. If none of the jobs pay this high, check the newspaper. Most of the time the newspaper will have the same jobs as the computer, but they may be different sometimes. If you still cannot find a job with that pay, then go to the gnome making desk. Make gnomes until your Sim cannot work any longer. Go into buy mode and sell all the gnomes. This will make up for some of the money you have lost. If you get a job that has the right amount of pay (over $200) then you should make gnomes until your carpool arrives. When the day is over and your Sim is worn, then replenish his/her’s stats. Continue to make gnomes and preserves and always sell them. Do whatever is necessary to gain job promotions. If your job needs creativity, always paint (because you can sell your paintings). If you need friends, take every other day off to make friends downtown or at your home. When your relationship with someone goes below 75 (top bar, 20 lower bar) then repair your relationships to ensure promotions. Keep getting promotions and build onto your house until your Sim’s house’s net worth is over $95,000. When it is, buy any lot, create your dream house, and finally get married.

Easy Highest Ranking Job

Use the following trick to get the highest ranking job but not see your friends every waking minute. Build all your skill levels up (cooking, body, logic, etc.) and make at least fifteen friends. Once you have made them and got your job, delete your friends’ houses so they will no longer appear in your neighborhood. Your friends will disappear under the “Relations” category and you will get to keep your job.

Catch Burglars Faster

To catch burglars faster, buy two burglar alarms and put them facing out toward the street, mailbox, or trash can. If you want to be slightly safer, you can put more inside. When a burglar appears, the alarms will sound when he is on the street. By the time he gets to the door, the police will probably be there.

Keep Burglars Out

If you want to keep burglars out and have a female Sim go into buy mode and buy a Female Powder Room Door as your front door. The burglar will wonder where the door is and simply walk away. Female Sims can enter with no trouble. The only drawback is you have to have all female Sims as friends. The advantage is that it is better than buying a security alarm and a door, as it serves both purposes.

Visit From Santa

This cool cheat makes Santa pay your house a visit. It doesn’t always work but here it goes: You will need to make a fire place and buy a Christmas Tree (from Livn’Large) to place beside. On a small table near by you will need to place the plate of cookies. It doesn’t always work, but it’s worth a try!

Get Sims Almost All The Way Up On Job Points!

NOTE: This will work on any of the 3 expansion packs or just the Sims. When you are in the “Making a Family” window, make 3 kids with all of their personality points and clothing and heads that you want (this will only work with 3 or more kids!). Then right before you would normally push “done” go back to the kids one at a time and press on the “adult” button, they will grow into what they will look like older and you can change them all you want then move them into a home and look at their job points, they will be pretty much halfway up on all of them and it will say that they have a job but I don’t think a car ever comes by to pick them up so you can get them they job they wanted.

Easy Ladder

Before you get a job make a couple of friends and try to increase some of your work attributes.This way once you get a job you’ll move up the ladder a little faster.

Enable cheat mode and enter rosebud;: as a code. Then hold [Enter] so that “No such cheat” begins to flash. Keep the key held to gain up to 99 million simolians. Enable cheat mode and enter rosebud as a code, then enter !;!;!;!; and so on. Every “!” results in another 1,000 simolians.Enable cheat mode and enter rosebud as a code, then enter !;!;!;!;! and so on. After your last exclamation point, type a semi colon then a colon. The end of your entry should look like !;!;!;!;: Then, hold [Enter]. The “No such cheat” message will flash. Hold [Enter] to quickly get up to 9,999,999 simoleons.

Never Pay Bills

Use the following trick to pay your bills, but cost you nothing. Tell your Sim to pay the bill as soon as he or she walks into the same room as the bill. Pause and save the game, then enable the move_objects on code. Delete your Sim, then revive him while the game is still paused. Resume the game and tell your Sim to pay the bill. The bill should be reduced to 0 Simoleons.

Full Need Meters

If your Sim is very depressed or has another low attribute, enable the move_objects_on code and pause game play. Click on the Sim in buy/sell mode and click the bottom of the screen to delete him/her. Once deleted go to the live mode and double clock the person’s head icon to go to where that Sim is located. Everything should be close to full. Note: Wave the game immediately before performing this cheat, or you will lose any career changes or points you have earned.

Move Anything

Press (Ctrl)+(shift)+(C) In the little gray box that should pop up type Move_objects on. If you want to turn it off type in Move_objects off.

Never Miss Work

Enable the move_objects on code and put your garbage can in front of the vehicle. Enable the move_objects on code and move the car to a different location where an inanimate object is in its way.

Full Energy To Go To Mall

Before you go to the mall, make sure you go to buy mode and activate the cheatcodes’ box. Press Ctrl+Alt+C. (Don’t put in the pluses!) Then, type move_objects on. After that, use your mouse to click on the sim you want to give full energy to. Delete that sim by pressing the delete button. Go back to live mode. You will see that your sim has disappeared. Click on the sim’s face in the face gallery. Your sim will then reappear! Call the cab to take you sim to downtown. When your sim’s mood bars starts to glow red, call a cab to go back home, delete the sim again, make him or her reappear again then call the cab to take your sim back to downtown!

See Your Sims Interests

Press and hold (Ctrl)+(Shift)+(C). In the gray box that pops up type in Interests to see the stuff that they like.
