Aye, aye, Captain Michaelis!
I'm convinced that Sebastian has been a sailor or even a ship captain at least once in his life.
Passenger cruising ship was first introduced in the early 1800s. I don't know how he control panel was like back then, but Sebastian knows how to operate the control panels, which buttons to press, where they keep the ship blueprints, etc. This has shown me that Sebastian has been on a ship and/or has prior knowledge about operating a large ship like Campania.
When the ship hit the iceberg, Sebastian went straight to the Wheelhouse/control room to close the watertight doors.
Tumblr media
This demon who didn't even know how to make a cup of tea knows how to operate a ship and to prevent more water from coming into the ship. He must've had some prior experience in this.
More Captain Michaelis in action.
Tumblr media
On top of that he (and Ronald) could predict that the ship would sink in less than an hour.
I don't know just how accurate he was, but this is just an interesting observation about Sebastian's possible past...

A while ago I made a post on my old account that it was disappointing that we never got to see meyrin on the campania arc because yana for some reason couldn’t include her despite her detailed character designs should she be a main character in the arc.
It just occurred to me that the reason why she wasn’t fitted in in the arc was because it would be too complicated/risky to have her on the ship without her possibly uncovering what Sebastian is and the whole ordeal with the reapers
Yes Ik that snake/Lizzy were there and they never found out but they were protected by people around them, most of meyrins action/ screen time would be centred around fighting off the bizzare dolls and possibly fighting off the reapers but then again it would be highly unlikely due to the risk of the situation.
Still would’ve been cool asf tho.
Pls pls pls if anyone also wants to pick this apart pls do I’d love to hear it, this is just a random realisation that came into my noggin that could be a reason why she wasn’t included in the end.

hello! long time watcher of black butler first time reader and i just caught up. something i don't get during the campania shenanigans and i was hoping you would explain. why did undertaker keep going with the first bizarre doll experiment when he found out that ciel and the midford family were on board. If he's cedric or just if he cares, shouldn't he have aborted the experiments and protected them? thank you a lot for answering this and sorry if you said this before but i didn't find it.
Tumblr media
Hey Anon! Even if you're not necessarily new to the fandom, welcome to the readers' side, hahaha! As for your question, I'm pretty sure I did answer this here and there once or twice, but I'll sum it up for you here. :)
First of all, while UT's a complex character, unlike some other fans, I never found that anything he does is senseless. Not ever since ch105. However, writing-wise, Yana-sensei can only slowly unveil more and more hints for UT's character and his agenda throughout the arcs.
For example, she can only reveal that UT "can't bear to lose another Phantomhive" after showing us that he cried about Vincent's death in the GW arc and after revealing he's a deserting Shinigami who's trying to bring back the dead in the Campania and Weston arcs. All these hints are revealed one after the other to make the readers slowly reflect about UT's goals and his true identity, as well as his past actions in previous arcs, in order to get to the bigger picture, just like you're doing right now.
As of right now, with all the hints we've gotten, we know that :
UT cares about salvaging what's left of the P family, as much as he cares about bringing back what he can of the ones who are dead (real!Ciel, maybe Claudia, but not Vincent because his body burnt too badly)
Tumblr media
UT considers Frances and most likely her kids to be amongst the people he "can't bear to lose"
Tumblr media
That much you can be rather sure of and that's the beginning of your answer: during the Campania arc, while our!Ciel and the Midfords were indeed in danger, UT also had to conduct this experiment in order to perfect his bizarre dolls, namely for real!Ciel's sake and for his sponsors, so he made a gamble.
For our!Ciel, he knew that Seb is a demon contracted with him, so he figured that Seb would definitely protect Ciel from the BDs.
Tumblr media
Additionally, by checking Seb's cinematic record during the arc, he also found out about the terms of contract between him and our!Ciel (what we read about in ch138). So, post Campania and as confirmed in Weston, UT now knows that Seb is bound to obey and act as our!Ciel's shield as long as Ciel's revenge isn't achieved. That's why UT uses Seb to make sure of our!Ciel's safety.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the Midfords, it's a similar gamble: ch151 revealed that UT has known Frances since basically her birth, so it seems logical that he's aware she's a very talented fighter, just like he probably knows that Lizzie is just as skilled (could be why she even was recruited by Bravat to protect real!Ciel if UT wasn't always around during the blue sect arc, me think).
Additionally, since UT knows that our!Ciel is quite selfless, I'm sure he also figured out that our!Ciel would order Seb to help his family if necessary:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly, UT found the time to put BD!real!Ciel to safety despite the chaos on board and, since he was looking for a way to sink the ship after the experiment until they hit the iceberg, I'm quite sure he had planned to make sure our!Ciel and the rest of his family would end up safe no matter what.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's my opinion!
I know some fans also used to think UT doesn't make a difference between being alive or dead thus used to say that, if Ciel and the Midfords had died during the Campania, UT would have simply collected their corpse and turned them into BDs. Personally I don't buy it, since his bizarre dolls still can't function without regular blood transfusions as of right now, so I'm sure he'd rather have them alive than dead.
Other fans also used to say, long ago, that Frances was in cahoots with UT during the Campania, which is why he didn't have to rescue them, because she knew enough of his plan to manage to rescue her family out of it, but 1) then why did she go on board at all? 2) I think ch151 definitely proved that she never was involved with real!Ciel's revival.
TL;DR I think UT bet on what he knew of at least our!Ciel, Seb and Frances to keep on conducting the Campania experiment while they managed to escape but, since we know he definitely doesn't want to lose them, I'm sure he had a backup plan that involved him rescuing them if necessary.
I hope this answers your question! Have a great day!

Hey! (^_−)☆
Do you think there was a particular reason for UT to see Sebastian’s record? i mean did he want to know a specific information, or maybe wanted to see something…Or just out of curiosity?
Why look at Seb's cinematic records?
When a few bloggers made some really odd claims, like:
Polaris must have been the mystery person in ch137.
Undertaker removed real Ciel's soul from Sebastian's body when he stabbed him, so real Ciel has his soul restored.
I had to go back and read that scene from the Campania arc. Because I knew those claims didn't make sense, but I needed a fresh look -- and screenshots -- to refute the claims.
Regarding the mystery person in ch137, I do believe Undertaker might have had a body by then to use for Polaris, since I theorize he used the body of one of the dead butlers from the attack at Phantomhive Manor. And that, therefore, not all of those bodies were consumed by the flames. However, only a month had passed between that attack and the ritual sacrifice that killed real Ciel. Undertaker later explains that he managed to sneak into the sacrificial building before real Ciel's body could be destroyed by the fire that Sebastian started. Fire is used a lot in this series to destroy evidence, isn't it? 😅
To Undertaker, fire is probably one of the few ways to truly lose the Phantomhives. That's why he cries over Vincent and specifically mentions how horrible it is that Vincent was reduced to ashes. Despite what some fans still think possible, Undertaker really can't make a bizarre doll for Vincent. Not only does he lack the right body, but we have to assume the cinematic records were destroyed as well. Just because the anime has a library of "life books" that can be altered doesn't mean the manga does. And even if manga canon ends up including something similar, like a storage facility for cinematic records that have been clipped and saved on special film reels or something, manga canon Undertaker isn't simply a "retired" reaper with easy access to that information... while having his praises practically sung by William. 😆
Anyway, even if Undertaker had Polaris' body in his possession by then, that bizarre doll wouldn't have been able to just quietly stand there and observe; none of the bizarre dolls were able to do anything but grab and bite when they were first made and "activated". By the Campania arc, that's still all they could do, including real Ciel. Chances are, any body he already had in his possession when he collected real Ciel's body would have also been in the absolute earliest stages of the process, like laying in one of those special coffins... being repaired from their mortal injuries.
Also, how would Undertaker know to send anyone to that sacrificial venue when he couldn't even get there in time to keep either of the twins from being killed? There's no reason for Undertaker to send someone who can only observe and not intervene on his behalf to save them. That's the sort of thing an active reaper or even an angel might be sent to do -- observe and report. That's why I still think the mystery person is either William, another active reaper, a "higher up" in the reaper organization (possibly angels)... or even John Brown. I theorize that Undertaker was still trying to figure out where the boys had been taken, and perhaps he had trouble getting there in time to even collect a body. By then, the demon contract had already been made, the fire had been set, and the new master and "black butler" had already left the scene.
It's also been made quite apparent in later chapters that real Ciel's soul was not removed during the Campania arc and subsequently restored to real Ciel's body.
So, I had blogged in response to those claims (and others like them) that Undertaker stabbed Sebastian and viewed that chunk of his cinematic records because he didn't know how the contract had been formed. The mystery person, whoever it is, in ch137 had not been sent there by him.
There is no other known reason to want to see his cinematic records. However, Undertaker also got to see how the demon has been treating his young master. And that's when he says the demon is no good for our earl after all, even though he's protective, so he goes in for the kill but gets interrupted by the ship listing too much.
Undertaker gains a wealth of knowledge from those snippets of Sebastian's cinematic records:
The fact that the two do have a contract with each other, and the fact that real Ciel's death was used as the sacrifice. This confirms that Sebastian has already claimed/devoured real Ciel's soul.
He gets to see the terms of their contract, so he can look for loopholes to break it.
He gets to see how the demon and young master treat each other, from the very beginning of their contract into the various stages of their training (as butler and earl, respectively), and he might be able to further manipulate that... cause strains on their working relationship, so that it's even easier to potentially cause a breach of the contract.
He also gets to see Sebastian make an early attempt to end the contract prematurely and go ahead and claim the kid's soul. So, even though he knows the demon is contract-bound to protect his master, he's not entirely above tricking the kid into giving up. Which means if Undertaker wants to break the contract but keep the kid alive, he has to be careful not to break it in a way that would still give the demon a chance to eat his soul anyway.
There might be other things he's gleaned from viewing those cinematic records, but that's what I've been able to think of right now.

I’m so excited to see how Lizzie’s character develops more in this arc, particularly regarding her relationships with the twins!
It’s going to be interesting to see her wrestle with having gotten to know O!Ciel while thinking he was R!Ciel. I have a feeling she’s going to face some disappointment with what R!Ciel is actually like when she spends more time with him.
From what we’ve seen so far, R!Ciel doesn’t seem to have developed the skills, mindset, or maturity that O!Ciel has (which makes sense considering the circumstances). I bet we’re going to see him start to get overwhelmed by the expectations built up by O!Ciel’s work (which we’ve already seen happen a bit).
Back to how this relates to Lizzie, I have a feeling his emotional intelligence isn’t as developed either (which again makes sense given the circumstances). O!Ciel got to know Lizzie with more depth. He’s seen beyond her shield of cuteness and come to respect and understand her in a way R!Ciel hasn’t. I watched Book of the Atlantic the other day since I’d caught up on the manga and hadn’t finished the anime. Seeing that particular scene again (Ch. 58 in the manga), where we see how Lizzie’s insecurities developed, made me realize that R!Ciel hasn’t really gotten to know her since he had that mindset.
I have a feeling Lizzie’s going to try to connect with R!Ciel and end up disappointed that he’s not more like O!Ciel. That would be a fun conflict to see! It’ll also be interesting to see where R!Ciel goes from here. Will he grow better or will he succumb to his flaws?
Regardless, I definitely think Lizzie’s going to have to face some more tough times ahead.

Juste après l'arc Book of Murder ?

Watched all Kuromyus, yay! (except Lycoris 2015, as of yet)
Actually loved the last Weston arc one, it was so fun! And Sebastian is the prettiest (reminds a bit of that one art of prof.Michaelis with a book). Ciel looks a bit unhinged (the makeup and lenses (and hair) are... a choice). Though, young master definitely ‘strides boldly down into darkness’, becomes more demonic, so to say, etcetera, etcetera, sooo... *shrug*
My favourite Ciel is from the original MBDW, so grumpy and cute.
All the Sebas-chans are mighty fine, actually >:D
The first Lycoris I liked the least (including: Seb was damn weird there). Grelle was better, imo, in non-canon MBDW, wtf! I’ll see, if Furukawa will improve the whole experience, lol.
In general, Grelle and Undertaker were great! The last new Undertaker's alright, I guess.
Unfortunately, I think, I had verrry high expectations for the musical for my (absolute) favourite, Campania, arc.
The curtain call introductions were so touching uwu
Will rewatch later, wonder, will the impressions change at all~

For those of you who don't know, there is an extra chpater accompanying the Campania Arc. featuring Sebastian's "day of rest" and it's an absolute treasure
Most of all because the only winner in the entire endeavour was Ciel who:
• Took a break from Sebastian's fussing presence
• Watched his butler become Elizabeth's dress doll for a change
• Got to see Sebastian make sinister remarks while dressed in something your grandmother would wear to bed
• Just generally carried himself with the air of an imp
Meanwhile Sebastian:
• Had all the staff fussing over him
• Was forced to hear any potential accident his absence could cause due to his sensitive hearing
• Intervened after all so the manor could still be standing in order
• Got pampered by Elizabeth
• Was made fun of by the Young Master
• Is not actually sated by human sleep nor food but was ordered to resort to them anyway

There is probably more than one Shinigami deserter behind the Blue sect and revenge arcs
Old theory is old [x][x], but I wanted to explain it more thoroughly considering the few recent discoveries.
At this point, I think everyone can imagine that, considering the scale of the operation thus far (with several blood collection sites, a high tech lab, etc), UT needs sponsors and specific backup in order to make it all work, especially considering he seems to mostly hang around real!Ciel.
Tumblr media
This is backed up even more by similar previous examples in the story, such as:
the circus arc, in which that mad doctor was sponsored by Baron Kelvin for their twisted experiments
the Green witch arc, with the whole deception around Sieglinde in Germany sponsored by the state
Sieglinde’s new lab in England is now sponsored by Queen Victoria
In other words, without money there is no medical or scientific wonder. And UT probably doesn’t have enough money in his wallet, considering...
Tumblr media
...he didn’t get paid much when he was working as a mortician (this isn’t a joke, he despises the Queen a lot).
Therefore it’s likely that the sponsors were there since the start of the BD experiment, as it was already hinted during the Campania arc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Several Japanese fans (and I think some fans here as well) previously mentioned it’s possible the Undertaker managed to realize this first experiment because the Campania belonged to the Blue Star Line company, who may have been involved in the Aurora society because they wanted to resurrect their heir (Patrick Phelps who died in Ciel’s manor, one arc prior).
When it comes to the Weston arc, the previous Prefect Four called on the Aurora Society to resurrect the students and teacher that they had killed, which is how UT ended up supervising Derrick Arden’s return as well as Ciel’s investigation.
Until then, UT explained each step of the BD project, from the editing of the cinematic records to the supplementary episodes (”yearning for the future”) that are grafted (and he sacrificed many BDs, except real!Ciel). This means it’s possible that UT, as a skilled Shinigami before deserting, would have been able to edit the records by himself.
However, the scale changed once more with the Blue Sect arc, adding actual medicine to the resurrection process and that’s precisely when Othello hinted...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...that UT alone wouldn’t have been able to make it work, because he lacks the scientific knowledge.
This is further confirmed in ch149 when Othello recalls that no one actually expected UT to turn into a mad scientist able to do this...
Tumblr media
Besides, as UT himself explained in ch141, it’s because he was trying to bring the twin back in the first place that he ended up working on the BD project, which led to the 3 arcs we know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In other words, it’s because UT researched a way to bring the twin back that it led to him meeting with these “eccentric fellows”. And now, the growing number of bizarre dolls are simply the results of people paying
to get some people resurrected as a BD (that couple in the Campania arc, the Prefect Four, Phelps’ family? Chris Heathfield ?)
or to get BDs as weapons (Queen Victoria? maybe Germany and France which would explain why UT went there briefly during Summer?)
In the Blue sect arc, we even saw a new form of “sponsors”: people paying to get better health and a slightly prolonged life...
Tumblr media
...until they became a blood collection source and died.
Aside from UT lacking enough medical knowledge, another reason I think there is another deserting Shinigami involved is because the consequences of the BD experiments are a real liability for the Shinigamis’ higher-ups:
Tumblr media
And while we don’t know why UT or any other Shinigami deserted, it’s been hinted before that they could have discovered something incredibly shady behind the Shinigami Organization. [x][x][x]
So, while UT seems mostly motivated by a personal goal (not losing more Phantomhives), it’s possible that another deserting Shinigami would have a completely different motive, one that might include shattering the balance of the world.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In any case, the fact that ch191 showed Layla/Al (Lord Vega, a status she probably has because someone in her family paid a lot of money to have her resurrected and on blood transfusions, maybe she’s Chris Heathfield’s daughter?) wielding a possible death scythe is just yet another hint of more Shinigami deserter(s) being involved in this project.
After all, UT mentioned that it was quite hard to leave the Organization with his scythe, so for now I don’t think he managed to smuggle out several scythes (nor to create one from scratch), meaning that:
these scissors/daggers belong to another Shinigami who deserted and who lent them to Layla
or that UT took them from another Shinigami whom, in that case, he most likely killed (post desertion)
Tumblr media
As to who this deserter could be, well, a Japanese fan whose thoughts I love reading, because they always make a lot of sense, theorized before that this Shinigami deserter might be...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...the doctor who recruited Ada (can’t be Stoker btw, he had no glasses).
Of course, their identity is only speculation at this point, but I find this would make more sense than UT single-handedly managing this big-ass operation when he only claims that he started to get involved in the BD project because “he didn’t want to lose more Phantomhives”. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I hope this made sense! Please let me know if I have forgotten a hint!
