who are your favourite blackbutler characters?
Hey Anon !
Ah, well, pretty much all the kids, y'know ? Except real!Ciel, because he's evil, but otherwise our!Ciel, Liz, Soma, Ed, Sieglinde and Finny, I care about a great deal. :)
I also love Tanaka, Frances and Vincent as characters because they carry a lot of the plot's mystery and I'm still reading to hopefully get my answers one day. Finally, kudos to Diedrich and Cheslock as secondary characters who are definitely worth their hype.
I used to be a pretty big fan of UT back when I started the series, because the guy is absolutely dashing despite his dirty long hair and terrible nails, but now that I'm 30, all I see when I look at him is how toxic his grief is and how much he needs a damn therapy. But I guess I still care about finding out what he knows, because he carries a good chunk of the plot too. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
TL;DR I'm due for a reread, but I definitely categorize Kuroshitsuji as a tale of revenge cycle and generational trauma so I'm here for the kids : hopefully some adults will help protect and guide them before they get fucked up for good.
I hope it answers your question, have a good day Anon !

The Midfords and the inversion of gender roles
So the Midfords have been on my mind lately, specifically the way they establish themselves within a heavily gendered society.
This already starts when we look at their names. Alexis and Frances are incredibly gender neutral names, meanwhile Edward and Elizabeth are THE boy and girl names of that time.
They present themselves as the ideal family: a powerful husband, a dutiful wife, an ambitious eldest son and an engaged younger beautiful daughter, but if we look closer at the family, we see that they do not fit neatly into those categories.
-Alexis may be a man of high power and status, but he is also very much like his daughter. He's bubbly, incredibly affectionate, crafty and absolutely adoring of his strong wife.
-Francis is very well mannered and proper, but she is strict. She is very open about her opinions (especially regarding men) and is authoritative over the way people present themselves. She possesses over incredible strength (which lead to her husband falling head over heels for her) and acts as the head of the household.
For Lizzy and Edward we thankfully had some internal dialogues, which makes it a lot easier to read them.
-Elizabeth is a sweetheart and a girly girl in every sense of the word, but just like her mother she possesses over a lot of strength and skill. In terms of her behaviour and interests, she takes a lot from her father, being very affectionate and bubbly, but when faced with danger, she takes after her mother: jumping in the face of danger without a second thought and abandoning her image of a helpless girl to protect her loved ones. Her character arc revolves around her struggling to find the balance and connection between her girlhood and her strength. She is tied to the gender roles of Victorian society, but because of her families status as British knights as well as her future husband's job, she is also forced to abandon them in order to protect herself.
-Edward is ambitious gentleman and very protective over his family, but he's also incredibly awkward and his desire to be a gentleman is stretched to a very ridiculous extreme, causing the exact opposite effect of what hes trying to achieve: He doesn't trust other men, He's awkward, hes loud, he is very salty and very sex-repulsed. He does not possess the same strength as his sister and has come to accept that with grace. He takes after his mother in both looks and behaviour, although he fails to have the threatening aura his mother does, because of his awkwardness. He takes a lot after his father in terms of his awkwardness, being a little air headed just like him and being very obedient to Francis.
Overall, this family adheres to gender roles on a surface level, but the deeper you look, the more it is apparent they also stray very far from them. I love the way they are written and I do hope we get to explore more of them in depth in future arcs.

Is Frances Midford (home name Phantomhive) an albino?
It's not canon since Frances colours are from the anime (Book of Atlantic), but I believe her hair and eyes colors were somehow confirmed by Yana.
Tumblr media
Hair without any pigment and violet/pink eyes in the real world means an albino.
Tumblr media
If this would be canon in the manga too and the theory about Undertaker being the father (and Yana confirmed that women in the Phantomhive family take after their fathers) would be also true, it fits that Undertaker was also an albino when he was alive and had then violet/pink eyes.
@abybweisse (because I don't want you to miss this idea)
Additionally if the celtic theory would be true:
Tumblr media
Undertaker (or rather Cedric K. Ros) with his natural white hair could be a natural leader among Celts.

Note
I don’t think the women in Kuroshitsuji are all sexualized or stereotypes at all. Characters like Lizzie, Sieglinde, Grell, Angelina, Frances, Mey-Rin, and Doll are all complicated characters in their own right, female characters can be flawed yet interesting just like male characters can. Even in cases where they are definitely sexualized (which I am critical of btw) like Ran-Mao, Beast, or Nina, they still are intriguing characters that have agency and/or importance in the story.

Ao no Exorcist is a Shonen series written by a woman and it shows
Since the latest chapter, I've been thinking about how several usual Shonen tropes are written rather differently under Kato-sensei's pen. No judgement or anything, it's just cool to observe. Some examples :
1) Rin's mentor is a woman
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) Rin's secret, despite being the MC, was revealed in ch13 to the entire cast, meanwhile Shiemi, The Main Girl, who was introduced to be so helpless is only starting to be explained.
Tumblr media
3) Also, the Mysterious plot-relevant Shonen Parent is actually the twins' mother. (Of course Shiro is super plot-relevant too, but Satan is still angsting over Yuri and she's a huge part of the reason why he's the big bad)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
4) Rin also changed his view about his future throughout the story: from dropping out of school, passing by hoping to become the Order's Paladin (probably to cope with Shiro's death and also to antagonize Arthur), to finally showing way more interest and potential in the (less epic and heroic in appearance) field of talismanic cooking.
Tumblr media
5) When it comes to arcs, mental illness is a valid reason to build a character arc around...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6) And so is making an arc about girls being "cursed" to basically "get married and have children before they hit 30, the age where their beauty fade thus they become useless" :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7) ANE is a story about women becoming traitors to protect their loved ones, like Mamushi
Tumblr media
or becoming overwhelmed because men toyed with their feelings like Tamamo
Tumblr media
8) Older women can be absolute badasses like Shiemi's grandma
Tumblr media
or Lucy.
Tumblr media
9) Complicated mother-daughter relationship and girl friendships are given as much focus as complicated father-son relationships and sweet bro friendships (like Bon and his dad during the Kyoto arc, as well as the complicated but deep bond between the Kyoto Trio)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
10) And one of my favorites: full time single dad, asking for help to do the job as well as he can and finding his true purpose in life by doing so :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hmm and now that I think about it, the only other Shonen series written by a woman I've been as invested in is Kuroshitsuji, by Yana Toboso, and similar examples can be found in it too, namely:
1) If Ciel ever finally admits needing a mentor, his aunt Frances will probably play that role
Tumblr media
2) Girls can be super strong & skilled (Elizabeth, Mey Rin) and clever (Sieglinde)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3) (one part of) the Big Bad is a woman (Queen Victoria)
Tumblr media
4) maybe Ciel's entire revenge stems from a conflict between Queen Victoria and Ciel's maternal grandmother, Claudia.
Tumblr media
5) the Undertaker has been a continuously freaking pain in the ass because he probably fell in love with that same maternal grandmother and couldn't mourn properly
Tumblr media
TL;DR we love our boys and their spectacular growth and development under women's pens a.k.a shonen series written by ladies are hella fun to read. :D
