Please kindly repost or comment on this with analyses of how possible/impossible it would be for a teenage character with a (fictional) chronic illness to:

Go to school- mainly curious about absences/field trips/events like prom. Would homeschool be a better option than public school?

Work part-time- how understanding are employees and coworkers with someone not always well enough to get all their hours in?

Travel long distance- she's an international student living with an adult relative with American citizenship, and seeing a doctor who can help with her rare specific illness (oh yeah she can fly so... factor that into traveling somehow 😂 aaah I don't know what I'm doing!!!)

Fight monsters with superpowers- the character is trying to live a normal life in constant danger of another supernatural race trying to exterminate her own, (which is how she ended up sick btw.) With limited physical abilities, how does overexertion and moderate to severe injury work?

If you need more specifics about the character, feel free to ask me! I know the supernatural element complicates it, so I'm trying to figure out if it's doable and represent chronic illness as best as I can. Thank you so much in advance! 😁

Mesmers are my one true love in both GW1 and GW2, and in general I lean towards squishy spellcasters in virtually all games (my level 14 D&D character is currently a sorcerer with 12 AC, lol).

That said:

I made a Guardian in GW2 (short version: heavy armor+most weapons+AOE support buffs+holy damage) years ago because I do have a great fondness for clerics and paladins in a sort of archetypal way and the class fits that vibe really well. I only played her to around level 50 (out of 80) and then mostly did nothing until I realized a few months ago that she already had some levels in the Weaponsmithing crafting profession and I could use her to make cool weapons. So I still didn’t play her, but would work on advancing her Weaponsmithing when I didn’t have the brainpower for anything else and eventually got her to max level in Weaponsmithing. GW2 crafting levels also gives you some standard XP, so doing nothing but crafting with her had gotten her to around 70, and I just used her to craft high-level materials that my other characters couldn’t make.

Then I realized that she had to be level 80 to access some account-wide features that would let her craft even more things. She’d only halfway completed even the beginning maps, so I just put on an XP booster and ran through Queensdale (human beginning map) doing events and getting exploration points. And it was super fun to play her, actually, because she’d just run around to low-level groups struggling against various bosses or actually dying, heal/resurrect/buff everyone/absorb damage enough for them to take out champions and such. My mesmer can’t usually do much for other players, so it was really different and the other players were like “oh thank you thank you,” so a nice experience all around.

...She was still stuck at 79, but then the Shadow Behemoth spawned, lol. So now she’s 80 and I’m going to outfit her with awesome equipment and run her around some more when I don’t feel like living on the edge as a mesmer.

#also i'm fond of her storyline even though it's not my number one favorite #hers is basically an au of althea's because she actually is a character in althea's story but obviously not the commander in that one #when althea goes to ebonhawke and is talking to people about various identity issues and uneasily realizes #that her cousin victoria probably wouldn't be accepted as much because she's adopted and there's this more ascalonian than thou shit #that victoria is my guardian! and she has the whole backstory around being adopted as a little kid #and never knowing what happened to her bio parents until the spies of the crown arc plays out #and i imagine she relates to langmar and ascalonian identity in subtly different ways than althea even though they're quite close #and they're quite different in personality—althea can be aggressive at times but she's a lot more slippery than victoria #victoria just looks around and is like Something Must Be Done (Preferably With a Large Hammer) #so although their starting backgrounds are similar (both blessed by kormir etc) #althea ends up in the order of whispers (i think even non-commander!althea in victoria's story would end up there) #and victoria in the vigil #it makes a certain amount of sense tbh that althea would end up going to ebonhawke because it's her birthplace and she has family there #and a lot of emotions for it in general—but ultimately she goes because she /wants/ to #while victoria has never been there in her life when the vigil sends her there to help and she's trying /not/ to have Emotions #anghraine babbles #long post #anghraine's gaming #ascalonian grudgeblog #victoria langmar #althea fairchild #honestly i do like missing sister much better than the dead parents backstory on the writing level BUT i do like the possibilities of both #anghraine's headcanons

Until I read the comments on that one post I had no idea the Bechdel Test was a joke and wasn't supposed to be a serious measuring stick by which you gauged if something was feminist or not. Everywhere I'd ever heard it brought up, it was brought up as a very serious thing, and it was a failure of media if it didn't pass it. I remember the debate about Mako Mori from Pacific Rim and if she was a character you were "allowed" to like as a progressive person despite the fact that Pacific Rim doesn't pass the Bechdel Test, the discourse, the discussion of if the director was sexist for not writing in another woman for her to chat with about non-men related stuff, the camp of people trying to insist that having a fully realized character arc and being as developed as any of the male leads = good writing even if she doesn't talk to another girl...

And I've also had the remark about my writing not passing the test, just not to my face. I searched my fanfic's name once, curious to see if anyone was discussing it outside of tumblr and AO3, and found a Tiktok complaining about it not passing the Bechdel Test. The top comment was "motherfucker YOU don't pass the test but we still watch your ass". I cackled and moved on, but neither the commenter, poster, nor I had any awareness this wasn't Feminist Media Critique 101 theory and was, in fact, a goof.

Right now there's a segment of fandom debating if Blue Eye Samurai is feminist since when Mizu and Akemi talk, they do bring up men, since, y'know. Women aren't considered people with rights in their era in Japan and thus it's something they mention instead of only talking about being cool girlboss badasses who never bring up gender. If something doesn't pass the Bechdel Test, a smug segment of the internet high-fives itself and congratulates one another on being More Feminist Than Thou.

They then get really angry if you disagree, even though by this metric, Sleeping Beauty (the original animated one, where Aurora has only 16 lines of dialogue) is more feminist than Blue Eye Samurai.

Dykes to Watch Out For (1983-2008) was a long-running comic and major piece of lesbian media. I grew up buying compiled volumes at the bookstore. To be honest, that kind of 90s-ish lesbian culture isn't really my scene despite me being bi, but it was very nice to have this slice of life-y somewhat realistic, occasionally somewhat parody, look at the queer communities around me. It's up there with Tales of the City for me in terms of being a window into a particular culture and time and place.

If anybody is interested in queer history, in addition to looking up factual info, I think a read of the complete Dykes would give a really good overview of how people were thinking about things and what issues came up a lot. You'll see things like Barnes & Noble increasingly putting feminist bookstores out of business in the 90s, attitudes towards porn in lesbian circles—all kinds of cultural issues of the day.

I drifted away as I got later in my teens and found more genre fiction I cared about, but at one point, this comic was a very welcome antidote to the glurgey coming out stories that made up a lot of the more realistic media.

Anyway, here's the comic itself, reproduced in its entirety because I think it's important to actually understand the context.

This is from 1985, so the era of Rambo, Conan, and Death Wish, each of which you can see being made fun of here. It's based on Bechdel's friend Liz Wallace's actual rule for seeing movies.

Anyways this was prompted by me stumbling across the term Lesbian Jesus again, pausing, and asking myself "Is she, though?" Which through this very well organised essay we have determined, she is not.

There are a lot of aspects to Aziraphale’s character that, when I first watched the show, I vibed with immediately without really thinking too hard about why. He just made deep emotional sense to me as a character. It wasn’t until I waded into the fandom that I realized how much metaphorical ink was being spilled over the question “Why does Aziraphale do the things he does?”

I would always think, “Well, that’s obvious, isn’t it?” but then find that I didn’t really have the words to explain why I thought it was obvious. It was just this ongoing feeling of “Well sure, that’s exactly the kind of thing I did/would have done as a born-and-raised evangelical teenager.” But then I would try to articulate the actual reasons younger-me would have had for doing the thing (and by extension, what I assumed Aziraphale’s reasons were) and immediately fumble because I hadn’t thought it through that far.

One of these elements of his character is his whole deal about forgiveness. Why is he always telling Crowley he forgives him or wishing for God to forgive him? Why is forgiveness one of his favorite things? Why is this such a prominent theme with his character?

(Me: Well, that’s obvious, isn’t it? Everyone else: What do you mean? Me: …uhhh well I definitely mean something, but yes, good question!)

So here’s my attempt at actually using my words to explain why I find this aspect of his character extremely relatable and realistic from an ex-religious-fundie perspective. And it's going to be in multiple parts because I have way too much to say.

The main point I want to make in this first part is that Aziraphale, like Crowley, has a ton of emotional baggage around the subject of forgiveness.

I see a lot of people ask things like "Why isn't Aziraphale more sensitive to the fact that forgiveness is an emotional hot button for Crowley, who fell?" And that's a fair question! But it's very clear to me whenever I watch the show that forgiveness is also an emotional hot button for Aziraphale, or else he wouldn't keep bringing it up. As with many of the things both characters have issues around, though, with Aziraphale it's less straightforward and less on the surface because of the amount of denial and rationalization his character runs on.

I think it's important to start here, because I firmly believe that when he expresses forgiveness:

He's not saying it glibly or meaninglessly.

He's not saying it because he's an angel and it's part of the brand/that's what angels are "supposed" to say.

He's not saying it because he's feeling smug and self-satisfied*.

He's not saying it because he's trying to put himself above the person he's forgiving.

He's saying it because forgiveness means something important to him, something very emotionally loaded and complicated.

*For the record, Aziraphale is 100% a smug, self-satisfied, holier-than-thou bastard sometimes. Exhibit A:

Seriously. Look at how pleased with himself he is while he gives Crowley that little speech about evil containing the seeds of its own destruction. This is Aziraphale being a smug bastard. (I say that with affection. It's one of my favorite Aziraphale moments. But he's totally talking shit here.)

But compare that to these:

Look at his face. He is not feeling pleased with himself (or anything) in these moments. I'm too low-tech to mess with video clips but it's the same with his tone of voice, which ranges from somber to devastated depending on the specific scene. Aziraphale brings up forgiveness when he's experiencing significant emotional distress.

This is already super long so I'm going to end this part here and start digging into what I think his specific damage is about forgiveness in the next post. But I wanted to start here because I've seen the take "Aziraphale is being a superior holier-than-thou prick when he forgives Crowley" several times.

(ETA: I’ve also seen the more positive take, “Aziraphale is just saying I love you the way an angel would,” and I also disagree with this because I don’t think it’s anywhere near that simple. But I digress.)

On the “superior holier-than-thou prick” interpretation: (1) Michael Sheen's acting choices in these scenes don't bear that out at all, and (2) as someone who was raised in a very toxic religious community from which I inherited a lot of Extremely Complicated Feelings about forgiveness that I'm still grappling with...I immediately saw a kindred spirit in Aziraphale in these moments.

Is it an ill-advised thing to say to Crowley of all people, especially that last time? Obviously. But is he being purposely cutting with his words when he says it? I think not.
