On 28th February, 1539, Thomas Forret, the Vicar of Dollar, John Keillor and John Beveridge, two black-friars, Duncan Simpson a priest, and a gentleman named Robert Forrester, were all burned together on the Castle Hill on a charge of heresy.

The persecution of Protestants in Scotland, at least if measured in martyrdoms, peaked in 1539, shortly after Cardinal David Beaton, a zealous opponent of reform, was appointed primate of the country, although from the info I have picked up one John Lauder, would have been the man condemning these men, he was Scotland’s Public Accuser of Heretics at the times. Heretics being anyone who didn’t follow the Catholic faith.

Of the five “heresiarchs” executed in Edinburgh, none had quite so fascinating a tale as Thomas Forret, an Augustinian monk turned Vicar whose passion for Scripture and preaching, coupled with frank observation of the institutional Church’s doctrinal and practical failings, earned him a place at the stake at the crest of the Royal Mile, just east of Edinburgh Castle.

Forret had been warned by the high heid yins about his behaviour on the pulpit a few times, one occasion said his sermons might lead to “make the people thinke” but, a very smart man, he rebuked the accusations of going against the lords work by quoting scriptures and his quick wit. At the time in Scotland the sermons were traditionally performed by “Black Friars” and “Grey Friars” That’s Dominican and Franciscan Monks to you and I!

It would all come undone in 1539 when Forret attended the wedding of the Priest of Tullibody, which attendance, no less than the marriage itself, flouted the Church’s stance position on clerical celibacy. Forret had added insult to injury by eating meat at his fellow curate’s wedding celebration, despite the fact that it was Lent.

So grievous were Forret’s collective crimes that, at his trial, he was condemned to death “without anie place for recantatioun.”

Subsequently brought to the place of his execution, a certain Friar Hardbuckell encouraged him to save his soul by confessing his faith in God. “I beleeve in God,” Forret replied. Hardbuckell then encouraged him to confess his faith in the Virgin Mary by adding the words “and in our Ladie.” Forret answered, “I beleeve as our Ladie beleeveth,” thereby maintaining to the end the perfect and full sufficiency of Christ’s saving work for sinners.

Forret’s wit and knowledge of Scripture stayed with him to his very last breath. Having been preceded to the gallows by one of his fellow martyrs, Forret called the same a “wily fellow” who wished to arrive at the feast awaiting them in heaven before the others in order to secure a good seat. As the noose was placed around his neck, he began to recite Psalm 51 in Latin: Misere mei, Deus, secundum magnam misericordiam tuam. “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love.” Thus he continued “till they pulled the stoole frome under his feete, and so wirried [hanged], and after burnt him.”

Yay I'm right in time. May I request Kunikida (BSD), Tobirama, Madara (Naruto), Kaede (kakegurui), Mei (BNHA), and Byakuya (Bleach) with a darling who is a part time cane user cause chronic pain, but is also extremely stubborn and always refuses help and says they're fine even if they obviously aren't. Please feel free to say no to this and take care of yourself, and I love your writings.

I'm finished with all of Gintama and I feel so emotional right now. It was a true journey. I'm no expert in chronic pain so correct me if I'm wrong with something! The only knowledge I really have is from watching all seasons of Doctor House.

Stubborn cane user s/o with chronic pain

Madara Uchiha

🌑Considering that he is a war veteran and the head of the Uchiha clan, Madara has spent his entire life training and getting stronger. He and his clansmen always had to go to war if injuries weren’t severe and so he is expert in anything but the problem his darling suffers under. Madara reacts sort of insensitive to your pain, he lives in a simpler world. Pain is something that goes away after all so he doesn’t really get why you still suffer from a disease/injury that healed long ago. You only give him a smile through the pain and just tell him to keel over and die before you go your separate way. Aren’t you just charming?

🌑Physically you’re weak, you can’t even walk properly sometimes even with your canes. But mentally you’re a castle, stubborn, fierce and snarky. You fight with words and insults that slap in the face and that is what draws Madara in. He’s quite amused how you threaten him despite his position and always manage to have the last word in something. He loves riling you up a little to the point where you swing your cane after him to bonk him just once. The elders object to the relationship, see you as a nuisance and not ideal to give the clan strong heirs yet Madara remains stubborn himself.

🌑He eventually has to know more about your chronic pain and how to treat it. Initially he believes that it’s good that you just endure all the pain and never bother to ask for help. That is until he sees the suffer written all over your face and how you even struggle to move. You remain stubborn, even if you fall down you reject any help. Madara blends out your protest though and just ends up carrying you if he realizes that you won’t get far. You don’t have to try so hard to endure all the pain by yourself, he’s your soon-to-be-husband so it’s fine to ask him for help. He grows more protective as he starts accompanying you everywhere.

Tobirama Senju

🌊Tobirama has a fight with his clan too when he announces the relationship but he has a thick skull himself, won’t let anyone else be his partner. Hashi supports him, giddy to welcome you into the family. Tobirama grows significantly more protective due to your chronic pain himself, studies everything including cause and treatment thoroughly and arranges the best treatment and medication he can put together. He even starts learning medic jutsus himself so he can provide help when the pain is especially bad. Most likely wants that someone with medical knowledge is always with you when he can’t.

🌊Physical weakness doesn’t automatically mean that you’re completely helpless, the Senju knows that. You’re a little force to be reckoned with, your temper and your tongue sharp. There is probably lingering frustration you harbor due to being at a disadvantage due to your pain which makes a fitting job a bit difficult. He arranges something fitting for your skills though. He’s softer with his s/o a lot, understands how they must feel sometimes since their pain interferes with their social and normal life. He’s a bit paranoid sometimes, worried that enemies would attack you due to being a easier target.

🌊He butts heads terribly with you when it comes to you refusing help from anyone. You shoo everyone away even if you drop down on your knees from the pain in your joints, grit your teeth and heave yourself up with your canes before you continue to go despite the pain. Even if you feel like a burden and don’t want to bother anyone, you have a hard time convincing him to let you do as you say. If you’re in too much pain, you shouldn’t force yourself since it might put a strain on your body or mentality. Tobirama is strict in such regards, even controlling, tells the medics who normally are there to assist no matter what, he does the same.

Mei Hatsume

🔧Mei’s mind is all about all of the wonderful things she can create to support other heroes. Whilst she isn’t dumb, she has a severe lack of education when it comes to her darling’s main problem and they’ll have to sit down with her and explain it to her. Mei feels just bad for her s/o after since it must suck to live with the pain all the time and not be able to do what others can do. She tries to be a help as much as she can, runs your errands when she has time so you don’t have to and tries to cheer you up as good as she can when you seem a bit gloomy. A big smooch, a tight hug or something fun she put together.

🔧Obviously she soon comes up with the brilliant idea to create something that will help you walking around and she puts especially much passion behind her project. Mei spends hours inside her labour, working tirelessly on her machine and sometimes completely forgets the time around her and doesn’t even take a break. It’s up to her s/o to drag her out and force her to take a bit care of herself. She doesn’t appear to be tired though but keeps her creation a secret. She wants to surprise you. Mei is predictable to you though so you already have a good idea what she’s doing.

🔧Mei understands your wish to be able to do things by yourself and your stubbornness to endure alone. You always refuse her help, insist that you’re fine and continue to suffer. She can’t do much to help you in such situations so her invention is her answer to help you and your pain somehow. You just want a more carefree life without being shackled to your pain and Mei wants to fulfill that wish somehow. She’s covered in dirt and sweat when she storms one day to you with stars in her eyes, tells you that she’s come up with something to help you. She’s extremely excited and proud, it’s hard to say no to her.

Manyuda Kaede

💴Kaede is a knowledgable guy so even if he shouldn't know too much in the beginning about chronic pain, treatment and medication, a few days of intense and thorough research are everything he needs. After that he is like a walking book, knows everything there is to consume. He kind of turns more clingy since he can't help but fret a bit about your situation and the pain you might feel in your joints. He has long discussions with his darling in regards of them stubbornly refusing to admit their pain and doing everything on their own. Kaede doesn't care if he has to argue hours with you, he just wants you to listen.

💴Even if he should have lost his seat in the council, he can't help but grow a tad bit more controlling with you. He wants to know where you are when he isn't, most likely convinces Sumeragi to stick with you when he can't. It's all for safety reasons he tells you, if something should happen to you he should always know where you are. He's more awkward when it comes to affection but tries his best to somehow help you when you're depressed due to the pain hindering you from going outside or enjoying activities that require physical work with your friends.

💴He has still money even in the scenario where he lost the bet against Yumeko. Sumeragi doesn't want his life after all so he has the needed financial strength to pay for everything his s/o needs when it comes to therapy or medication. He insists on doing at least that for you, in that regard he rivals you with your stubbornness. Despite his controlling tendencies Manyuda actually attempts to be a bit more understanding when it comes to his darling. He can only imagine how frustrating it must be to be restricted because of your pain but he's still willing to use calculating manipulation to stop you when you trigger his protective side.

Kunikida Doppo

📓Kunikida grows immensely protective and controlling due to your condition. He has books where he notes down on which days you felt pain, at which time and how painful it was. He's always questioning you as soon as you tense up and the pain clearly shows on your face even if you quickly try to deny it. When your condition worsens, he writes it down and ends up contacting your doctor to ask for advice which he heads quickly and makes sure that you do so too, even if you don't want to. He calls you when he isn't with you to ask how you're doing and even asks your family in case you should tend to lie to him.

📓Somewhere deep down Kunikida understands why you feels so frustrated and mad with him, he can be quite overbearing. Seeing you suffering and barely managing to stand hurts him though, he feels sick and paranoid when he thinks about you being targeted due to him working for the Agency. When he realizes that you're not fine, he ignores all your protests and forces you to sit down and not push yourself before he tries about everything he knows in order to ease the pain at least a bit. Kunikida has even moments where he gives you sturdy scoldings when you end up pushing yourself despite the terrible burning and stinging in your joints.

📓Sometimes he ends up feeling a bit guilty for supervising and manipulating you as much as he does but if you're too stubborn to realize that you're straining yourself too much, he doesn't have much of a choice. You must feel sometimes like you can't do anything due to your chronic pain. When you're in a better condition he tries to make up for it somehow by letting you do what you want even if he still keeps a sharp eye on you. Kunikida still wants you happy after all, too much stress and frustration could after all also worsen your pain so he tries to not push you too much.

Kuchiki Byakuya

🌸Byakuya ends up feeling more paranoid and protective when he finds out that his darling suffers from chronic pain. Hisana already died because of an illness so he can't help but fear a bit that he might somehow lose you too because of your frail condition. His paranoia makes him very strict and controlling and you find your already limited freedom even more restricted. A doctor is called in the estate and stays there so they can always cater to your need when your chronic pain is especially bad. You also have to endure daily checkups and Byakuya is always informed about your condition.

🌸Your stubborn behavior in regards of your own health angers him mildly and triggers his protective side even more. He confronts you and is incredibly blunt, tells you in a demanding tone to stop pushing yourself so much and rejecting any help when you clearly need it. He scolds you for it and might trigger your own temper and subbornness in return which might escalate in a serious argument. In order to keep things more 'harmonious', Byakuya isn't above threatening you mildly with even more restrictions. He just can't understand you and your childish behavior. He won't allow you to act just like you want, not when it causes you severe pain.

🌸He orders someone to always accompany you since he doesn't trust you, you'd just end up still going even if you're under immense pain. Normally serene and hardly angered, the moment your thick head leads you to a smaller accident, chances are that you are presented with a rarely angered Byakuya who glares at you with icy eyes. You're most likely put under house arrest, aren't allowed to venture outside the estate. After he's calmed down a bit, he attempts to talk more reasonable with you so you understand why he did what he did. Sometimes he's more vulnerable, admits that he is a bit scared something might happen to you.

personally, i like to believe that temehika had more of a slowburn relationship progression and i don't think they had anything interesting going on when their stormhail chapters happen... i do like to think of that as a turning point for their relationship though.

but first of all, i'll always link MakiFigaro's fic about their stormhail chapters intersecting because i think about it a lot... i think that even without temenos having any kind of particular interest in hikari, the thought of being unable to save another companion so soon after losing crick would just be too much for him...

i like to think that in crick's case, temenos was so strongly reminded of roi (also because of his relation to the church) that he was drawn to him immediately, almost too much and realizing too late that he was inadvertently dragging him into danger which wasn't something crick was prepared for unlike roi and jorg... you can see that temenos sort of pieces everything together during the stormhail chapter irt crick's similarity with roi and his little attempts to stop crick from investigating on his own but it's too late at that point o<-<

but when it comes to hikari, i think the realization comes slower for temenos... there are several similarities between the three (roi, crick, hikari) but i like that their earlier travel banters just sort of touch on it with temenos' chapter 2 calling hikari and crick his two trustworthy blades and i like to think that temenos is thinking of roi when he talks to hikari about ritsu in his chapter 2 banter... i think it's at hikari's chapter 4 banter when we begin to see how the way temenos treats hikari is different however, because he cautions hikari about trusting too easily but ultimately trusts him to make the right decision. with both roi and crick, it's like temenos almost feels obligated to be the one who keeps pushing them to doubt more often, but it's surprising (nice...) that he doesn't see hikari as someone who needs his guidance. (listen i know it's because the travelers can't make significant impacts on each other's stories but 1) i'm delusional and 2) i still think despite that, the fact that temenos doesn't even attempt to change hikari's mind and only offers a word of caution means a lot)

temenos' chapter 4 banter is where their connection really shines because they're the only two who talk so directly about how their losses affect themselves together? most likely because the banters have to assume that you haven't seen the other traveler's entire story yet, but since hikari already experiences so much loss in his chapter 1... 🥹 i think it's really nice that the game gave them that moment to talk about it a bit.

ok i got really sidetracked but that's only the first part of your question 😭 UH i'll try to keep the next part short... in terms of their reactions to each other's stormhail chapters, i think it makes the most sense for them to have split up after arriving in the city, and since hikari's banter in temenos' story takes place before crick's death, i feel like he would've been absent for it... (it feels like throne is the only one who was definitely near him at the time) so temenos is uh Distraught after hearing that hikari might've died at the castle mei bridge and especially after losing crick, he'd probably blame himself for not warning hikari more about rai mei's possible betrayal...

once hikari's returned to the group though, i think castti and hikari would try to comfort temenos since they have the most experience with grief. castti already tells him to take his time grieving in his chapter 2 and hikari would mostly just listen and stay by his side, i think...

anyway as per my first temehika fic (desert nights) i prefer to think of their relationship as only turning romantic after the events of the final chapter and epilogue. i think after losing kazan and with rai mei remaining in stormhail, as well as ascending the throne, he'd feel more isolated than ever and temenos similarly loses a real sense of purpose after repaying his debts to the dead and no longer having anyone to protect. that isn't to say i don't think their relationship can't start at any point tho ghjafdjk 20984903 temehikas existing in my head. simultaneously. anyway i seriously did write too much sorry about that hope it was enjoyable to read at least <3

Sebaciel, hands down. That is what got me into this fandom and it is what is keeping me here.

My favorite headcanon for sebaciel is that O!Ciel still needs Sebastian to stand in his room while he sleeps. I remember watching the anime and that scene happening and it honestly sealed my fate if it wasn't already sealed.

Also, of course, for Sebastian that he feels emotions not only for O!Ciel but for the servants as well. Either O!Ciel brought them out or demons feel them deeper. I'm fine with either! But I think each chapter this hc seems to becoming more canon.

Ahhh, there are so many. But Sebastian being impaled by UT's death scythe and still protecting O!Ciel and still fighting when he could have died and O!Ciel asking him if he can fight and Sebastian reminding him.

what is your character’s job

sophie owns and runs a flower shop. not so much selling arrangements, but more over a like, bulk shop for flowers? and some bouquets, but mostly like, you go in, there’s just buckets of flowers of different kinds for sale. they keep a small section of hats and some of the tailoring business because it gives them something to do in the slow hours, and they do really love sewing. their clothes do something have a tendency to become enchanted if she talks to them too much. (and they are known to just run their mouth. like she will just go off rambling and talking and just enchants things without meaning to. they may have gotten better at controlling their magic, sure, but they still can’t help themselves with the muttering. talking to herself like this calms them when they’re V Stressed. which is often considering their life.)

where has your character been pulled from in their fandom

sophie is pulled from the end of the entire series, aka the end of house of many ways. they remember everything that happened in the first book/movie, from the mess with the djinns, all the way to getting morgan safely away from the lubbockin. they’re pretty stressed, considering everything that happened during the past two halloweens, and just everything that has happened to their family in the last few years back home. they’d like to just ! have a break ! thanks sm !

has any magic affected your character

it had but! she’s good, she’s cool, the magic has worn off and they fully remember everything! not that they’re very happy about how they originally forgot and all of that, but they are relieved to finally remember their family and all that happened during her time in high norland. so now, they’re back and better than ever!!

any other information

okay so i’m going to link my previous intro / update posts here so that you can see a bit more of their vibe and who they are, since i am going to use most of this updated intro to explain what’s new and where they are at now that they are fully updated to the end of the series!! but pls understand that i love sophie hatter with every part of my soul and i would do anything for her. that’s the most important thing to know. oh and there’s no doubt in my mind that sophie is autistic which i will fight tooth and nail about howl and sophie being the adhd / autistic relationship dynamic

first and foremost, sophie will be using she/they pronouns. she doesn’t have a preference on one or the other fully, so she uses both. but right now it’s more so that strangers she prefers they, and people she knows/she is more comfortable with can use she/her.

before sophie died during the gala, the last thing they remembered from home was the ending of the first book/movie. they had helped defeat the witch of the waste, howl and calcifer’s curse had been broken and their heart restored, and sophie’s own curse was broken. since then, within the city, howl had remembered what happened in the year since that day, up until their son, morgan, was born. morgan is here in the city, living with howl at the moment.

sophie has had mixed feelings about it originally, considering they do not remember what happened when she and morgan were turned into cats, the issues that happened with the djinns, etc. it’s been stressful to say the least, to raise a toddler who expects you to understand everything he needs when you don’t even remember having children, or being married. she’s glad he is safe, but she’s still working on the whole mothering aspect of this.

now , with her memories restored however, they’re definitely less worried about the whole concept of raising a child. they remember morgan, remember him at this age and know how to handle some of his tantrums a little better. of course, having to manage a toddler who can conjure things on a whim is !!! not easy !!!! but she figures with all of their family here, as well as a better understand of her own powers, they should be fine.

sophie is now also the high witch of ingary, a position appointed to them both off of being married to howl but also from their own merit with how powerful they have become as a witch. does this mean that they are not as frequently accidentally speaking spells into existence? yes. does it mean that they have stopped doing it completely? no not at all. i cannot even lie, the talking to herself has got to be a stim or something because they do it no matter what, and unfortunately, their magic is rooted in speaking things to life, so no matter how good she gets, that will always be there. they wouldn’t be sophie if they didn’t just accidentally enchant things every once in a while.

okay but a quick overview of what happens in house of many ways (although everyone should go read the whole series, esp the first book, it’s incredible. the second book is DATED but the third saves it) ANYWAYS. sophie is called to high norland, a neighboring kingdom, to help with solving some money problems the king and princess are having, she goes ON HER OWN THANK YOU, because they were called, they can handle it on their own, and they very much were looking forward to the week or two of silence and relaxation away from the castle. they love their son and their family, but god do they need the space every once in a while. unfortunately, howl.. is howl. and soon after sophie arrives in the castle, in comes morgan, calcifer and twinkle (the picture perfect image of a child….. with a lisp.) charmain – the main character of this book– is so fucking confused as to why sophie looks like she is about to throttle twinkle the second he comes waltzing into the room.

either way, the whole moving castle crew is now inside of the castle to solve the missing money situation! many things happen,,, all of it absolutely chaotic in the way only dwj can really explain. so imma just skip to the end of what is really going to be affecting sophie here in the city

morgan is threatened by some anonymous source, telling sophie specifically “stop your investigation, and leave high norland, or your child suffers” so ofc sophie and howl are on high alert, doing what they can to trick whoever sent the note and save morgan along with finish the investigation.

many more shenanigans take place, the person who attacked sophie’s child ended up being a half human child of a lubbock (a monster in this realm that LAYS EGGS INSIDE OF PEOPLE TO HAVE HALF HUMAN CHILDREN TO TAKE OVER KINGDOMS– AWFUL) but they screw up, and try to take twinkle instead, thinking that’s sophie’s child. eventually they can’t quite keep twinkle under control , and they go for morgan.

sophie’s reaction is incredible, the only reason she didn’t take this guy out at the knees is because it’s a young ya novel. and howl had a plan.

bUT. the lubbockin basically almost kills morgan (fully choking this two year old out to a point where he does pass out in his hand) but before he can fully kill him, howl teleports himself into morgan’s spot, and like mid choke hold, transforms back into a like grown adult man and just DECKS the guy, it’s incredible. sometimes you forget they are a rugby player from wales when they’re all wizard-y in their blue silk suits and shit. but he fully beats the lubbockin down until calcifer and him turn all the remaining lubbockins into rabbits lmao

either way, sophie is going to be pulled post fight there, when they all arrive back into the castle to make the journey back to ingary. their memories only go up until the castle door closes, so they’re gonna be having a time with this reunion on top of having to apologize a million different times to howl for everything over the past few months.

they will not be taking responsibility for morgan knowing how to swear in two languages, that was unaware sophie, how were they supposed to know it was their kid.

either way, this is gonna be v much the same sophie we all know and love, except they’re a little older and little more confident in themselves.

Kahramanımız Chihiro'nun başından geçen bu olaylar size gerçek hayatta içinde olduğumuz tüketim toplumunun ve paraya olan tamahın iticiliğini gösterecek. Summary: It’s the Roaring Twenties, and when Natasha gets kidnapped by a hunter, Y/N teams up with James to save her.

A/N: This fic is a collaboration between @i-am-a-closet-fanfic-fiend and myself, and we decided to write a Vampire AU in honour of Halloween. I’m really excited to share this with you all, because Naynay and I enjoyed writing this so much. Divider credit to @whimsicalrogers!

At the turn of the twentieth century, Sir James decided to make the move across the pond, wanting a fresh start. Adopting the name of James Buchanan Barnes after the former president of the United States, and captivated by the American dream, he had managed to set up a speakeasy in Brooklyn. Before he knew it, his establishment became a safe place for all supernatural beings to unwind, and his business was booming as a result.

“Read ‘em and weep, boys. Full house, aces over queens.”

There was a chorus of groans from around the poker table, nearly loud enough to drown out the pretty bird singing. James smirked as he dragged the pile of chips towards himself.

“Getting pretty low on chips there, Rumlow,” he taunted.

“Don’t worry about me, Barnes. I feel my luck changing.” The werewolf sneered.

“I wouldn’t count on it. My lucky charm just walked in.” James remarked with a rather cheeky grin plastered across his face.

Y/N hmphed as she approached the table, hearing his comment. James sat with his back to the club - proof of how confident he was in his ability to handle anything or anyone that came his way. Even if she did try to creep up on him. He turned to watch her saunter towards him, a vision in red and black fringe and crystals.

“Lucky charm, hmm?” she asked, crossing her arms over her chest.

“Always.”

“Well, well, well. Who’s this?” Rumlow leered.

“Someone who will take great pleasure in ripping you to shreds,” Y/N stated in a bored tone before James could even muster a growl.

Rumlow surged to his feet. “Listen, here you little bi-”

Y/N had him pinned against the wall by the throat in the blink of an eye. “I’m listening. What were you saying?” she taunted as he gasped for air. “Nothing. Oh you’re sorry for even thinking about speaking to a lady like that. Not good enough.”

“Doll,” James sighed with a clear hint of amusement. .

She glanced back at him and pouted.

“Really? Spoiling my fun already?”

The older vampire quirked an eyebrow at her, and she rolled her eyes. “Fine.”

She let the werewolf drop to the ground, stepping over him to make her way around the table.

“We need to talk,” she said in a low voice.

James nodded and stood up from the table. Snapping his fingers, two of his guards removed Rumlow, his friends following swiftly behind him.

“Come with me.” He led the way down the hallway of the club to his office. “Drink?” he offered, pulling two glasses from his bottom desk drawer.

“Do you have the good stuff? Or just the hooch you’re serving to the poor jerks out there?” She asked him, her lips curling into a smirk as she looked around his office.

He shot her a mildly disdainful look. “You think I’d drink that bathtub gin.” He pulled two crystal bottles from the drawer. “My finest whiskey or fresh O-negative?”

“Whiskey.” She stated, rather plainly.

He nodded and poured them both a drink. “I take it this isn’t a social call, but it’s good to see you, doll.”

A small smile graced her lips in spite of the serious nature of her visit. “It’s good to see you too, James.”

“Now, what’s wrong, sanguinis mei?” He asked her, a hint of worry evident in his tone.

Warmth filled her chest at the term of endearment, and she was reminded of the first time he had called her that, all those decades ago during one of her first nights at Bran Castle.

He had stopped by the guest room to give her her daylight ring, and found the young vampire feeling rather nervous about the choice she had made. While she had chosen to become a vampire, and had acknowledged that she had a lot to learn about this life, that did not mean that she was free of her guilt. She had killed the man who had tortured her, and surely, she had retained a bit of her humanity when it came to her guilt.

Thankfully, Sir James understood all too well about the guilt, for he himself had always felt like a monster for the horrific acts he had committed in the war against the Ottomans. That night, they had bonded over that, and Y/N had realized that this man was not as cruel as everyone made him out to be. He had a big heart, but it seemed that only Natasha had been able to see that. After that night, so did Y/N.

“Natasha missed our rendezvous.” She replied, letting out a nervous sigh as she sipped her drink.

“What?” James quipped, raising his brow as he sat at his desk.

“We were supposed to meet two days ago. Here. But she never showed.” She stated, clearly worried for her sire. “You know she’s not one to miss our rendezvous like this, James.”

“Any idea on where she could be?” He asked.

“There were rumors of a hunter in the area.” Y/N informed him. “I think he has her.”

“What’s his name?”

“Steve Rogers.”

James growled.

“I take it you know him.” She noted, not entirely surprised by his reaction.

“We’ve never met, but he’s caused a few problems for me in the past.” He replied with a sigh. “I know his usual haunts. I’ll take care of it.”

“We will take care of it.” She clarified, clearly not wanting to sit this one out.

“No, you’re staying here, sanguinis mei.” James told her, though it came out sounding more like an order.

“Like hell. She’s my sire,” she reminded him.

“Which is exactly why I’m not about to put you anywhere near the man who kidnapped her.” He was clearly protective of her.

“You’re not putting me anywhere. I’m going. End of discussion.” She stated, rather sternly. There was a time when she had been intimidated by him, but those days were clearly behind them.

James cursed something in Romanian, which had become a habit of his.

“That was rude.” she deadpanned; she clearly understood what he had said, considering that she had spent quite a few years of her immortal life in Romania.

“You are just as infuriating as Natasha. Fine. If you insist, let's get you ready. As pretty as that dress is, it’s not exactly stealth.” As gorgeous as you look in it, he’d wanted to say, but he decided to refrain from that.

“Honestly, I expected more from the famous Black Widow,” Steve Rogers mocked as he leaned against the wall. “But you really don’t have much fight in you at all. Do you?”

Natasha snorted indelicately. “I have only ever fought people I thought were a threat to me. And you, Rogers, are most definitely not.”

“We’ll see about that,” He marched forward dragging the chair she was strapped to across the floor towards the other end of the room, where a single window allowed in the first rays of daylight.

“A lovely view. Your method of intimidation needs work.”

His smile turned smug as he appraised her. “Taunt all you want. When daylight comes, you’re nothing more than a pile of ash. Just like the rest of your kind.”

Natasha held back a scoff. Little did he know. That light wasn’t going to do anything to her.

“You don’t look worried.”

“Maybe I know something you don’t.”

He placed his hands over hers on each arm of the chair, leaning in close. “Or maybe you think I’m as dumb as the other hunters you’ve come up against. Think again.”

Nat’s eyes went wide as the hunter slipped her daylight ring from her finger. Their existence was a well kept secret even among her own kind. She’d never met a hunter who knew about them.

“Not so mouthy now are you?”

Natasha swallowed the worry that was beginning to gnaw in her gut and offered him a saccharine smile. She needed to bide her time. “You’re going to regret this.”

“No, Miss Rushman. I really don’t think I will-”

“Think again,” James hissed as he placed a blade against Steve’s neck.

Y/N moved quickly, dragging Natasha away from the window before releasing her.

“Well, if it isn’t the man himself. James Buchanan Barnes, New York’s own godfather,” Steve greeted conversationally.

“You’ve been a thorn in my side for a while now, Rogers, give me one reason I shouldn’t kill you right now.” The vampire growled, tightening his grip on the blade.

“Because I'm more useful to you on your payroll.” The hunter stated, rather cockily.

“Excuse me?”

“Oh come on, you’re a smart man. I’m the best hunter there is. I’ve taken down more of your kind than I can count.” He boasted.

“That’s not saying much,” Y/N sneered.

Natasha hushed her with a warning look.

“You’re not really selling me on not killing you right now, pal.” James pressed the blade harder.

“Look, I’m not some fanatic. I know I’ll never kill every last one of you. But being a hunter is a thankless job. I figure if I work for you, I can get paid to kill vampires and whatever other monsters you want taken out. It’s a win win.” Steve explained, hoping that he could convince James.

“Or I keep my money. Kill you, and put your head on pike as a message to all those who would cross me.” James suggested, his eyes burning bright red as his fangs peeked through his lips.

Steve’s undoubtedly witty reply was cut off by a series of deafening howls.

“Rumlow?” Y/N asked and James nodded.

“What the hell is he doing all the way out here?” Natasha asked.

“They probably followed us here hoping to get a shot at killing us,” James explained, more annoyed at the interruption than anything.

“And why would they do that?” The red-head asked in confusion.

“Why don’t you ask your protege over there?”

“Y/N,” Natasha’s voice held a warning tone.

“He was rude. So I pinned him to the wall. By his throat,” she added innocently.

Steve barked out a laugh, which he regretted when the blade broke the skin.

“Is this what it was like dealing with me?” Natasha questioned.

The howling continued, moving ever closer.

“It is still what it’s like dealing with you,” James shot back, gesturing to the situation at hand.

Steve took the opportunity to wrestle out of the vampire’s hold, throwing his hands up in surrender. “Here, let’s make a deal. I’ll help with your werewolf problem. If I do a good job, you hire me. If I betray you, you can kill me.”

“Win win,” James mocked.

The wolves had surrounded the building and were clearly getting ready to launch an offensive. Steve returned the daylight ring and her weapons to Natasha before picking up two crossbows and two quivers of bolts. He offered them to James and Y/N. “Top floor has windows on all sides. You should be able to get off clean shots before they manage to climb the building.” He turned to Natasha. “You can come with me and we’ll take them on, hand to hand.”

“No way. I’m coming with you. Natasha, Y/N. Cover us.” James argued.

“You know these bolts won’t do anything to werewolves except piss them off right?” Y/N asked.

“These will do more than that,” Steve assured her.

Natasha plucked one from the quiver and examined the tip. “Silver plated. You really are smarter than the average hunter.”

“Told you.”

A grating voice cut off the interaction. “Come out, come out, Barnes. We’ll see whose luck is holding out tonight.”

James shared a look with both Natasha and Y/N before nodding once. They disappeared up the stairs, taking positions at opposite windows.

“So why did you let him catch you?” Y/N asked conversationally as she took aim at a hulking brute of a werewolf who’d posted himself on the hill behind the house.

“I was bored. And I thought he’d be good for the team.” Natasha responded with a shrug.

“Did you recruit him?” The younger vampire asked curiously.

“No, but that doesn’t mean I wasn’t hoping for this.”

“I think you’re getting ahead of yourself.” Y/N pointed out. “James could still rip his throat out.”

“He won’t. James knows that he’s either good enough to catch me or I thought he was good enough to let him catch me.” The red-head clarified. “Either way…”

“He’ll give him a chance.” She concluded. “You really do always get your way don’t you.”

“Mhmm.”

Downstairs, James glared at the blonde. “Let’s go. I’m giving you this chance. But just know, Rogers. You make one move against me or them and I’ll make you wish I killed you.”

Steve smirked and snapped a mock salute. “Message received, sir.”

Rumlow managed to sneer at James for a whole three seconds before the look was wiped off his face by a right cross. “Oh you are going to pay for that.”

James did not pay for that.

Steve had slipped out the back of the building and was able to take out two of them while Natasha and Y/N picked off another four together. James walked away from Rumlow’s body, barely rumpled. Steve had tussled with another wolf and bore a few scratches but nothing too bad. James could tell from the smell that the blood on his shirt was not his. The vampire had to acknowledge that the fight would have been much harder without his silver plated weapons. Maybe Rogers would prove useful after all.

As he walked back towards the building he noticed Steve reach for something in his pocket. A revolver his mind recognized a moment too late. Steve managed to get the shot off before James could react. The bullet raced towards him and whizzed past his ear, directly into the werewolf about to charge him. The beast crumpled to the ground motionless.

“How?” James questioned.

“Silver bullets.” He replied.

“You had a gun that shot silver bullets and you gave us crossbows?” Y/N huffed, unimpressed.

“Guns make it too easy. Where’s the fun in that?” The hunter remarked with a rather snarky grin.

Natasha laughed, and Y/N shared a look with James.

“Welcome to the team, Rogers. Don’t forget, you take your orders from me.” James told him.

“Of course.” He eyed Nat who looked entirely too pleased with herself. “Who else would I take orders from? You won’t regret this, Bucky.”

“I already do,” he sighed.
