I hate war. I don't understand how it's possible to kill each other in the twenty-first century. It should be forbidden, like cannibalism. Although cannibalism I can somehow understand, because hungry people eat like animals. But war is a disgusting thing.

Pamfir (2022)
Western Ukraine, on the eve of a traditional carnival. Pamfir returns to his family after months of absence. He’s determined to earn an honest living and set a good example for his beloved teenage son Nazar. But in a town where corruption runs deep and crime and religion are inextricably linked, his plan is quickly thwarted when Nazar sets fire to the local church in a misguided effort to keep him at home. To pay for the damage, Pamfir must reconnect with his troubled past and take on one last job for a crime syndicate operating a risky smuggling venture in a place where all the rules have changed. He will be taken on a risky path with irreversible consequences.

SUBLIME CINEMA #624 - MESHES OF THE AFTERNOON
Maya Deren was a Jewish-Ukranian filmmaker whose strangely beautiful avant garde films were hugely ahead of their time. She was a dancer, a choreographer, a poet, photographer, a writer and a theorist, and combined her multiple fields of talent to create ‘experience’ films which transcended any one medium. Meshes of the Afternoon is probably her best known work. Many of her shorts have been restored and are available on Blu Ray via Kino, but sadly no real Criterion treatment has been afforded to her sprawling filmography just yet.

Human life is scary. It has a lot of good things in it, and it can turn out differently, but it's scary. You don't know a lot of things beforehand: you don't know yourself; you don't know it when you're wrong; you don't know the price of your actions. You realize something post factum about your guilt. You ask: why didn't I think of that at that time? Well, at that time you were incapable of thinking. You had neither the brains nor the guts for it. A puppy can't get what a grown-up animal is able to see.
