"The dark crimes that stain my soul, brother, you cannot begin to imagine. If you knew, you would turn from me in horror and in loathing. And, you are right. Sometimes, in the night, even I turn from myself.
But, know this, Caramon. I committed those crimes intentionally, willingly. Know this, too. There are darker crimes before me, and I will commit them, intentionally, willingly....”

Fan Artist Emoji Asks
🎢 Which of your images would you call your wildest ride?
💔 Is there an image of yours that broke your heart?
Aw, hey, thanks for the ask! :)
Oh that first one is tough since I've been doing art for so many years. I'd say one that stands out is a portfolio image I worked on back in 2010 (when I was much better at art) that had soooo much going on with lighting, water reflections, subsurface scattering, etc., and I got a lot of feedback from other artists to help me improve it.
Tumblr media
As for breaking my heart... Hm, a lot of things do that, I guess, since I'm usually disappointed when I can make the thing look like it does in my head 😅 But if we're talking what images I got feels from... Okay that's tough, too, because I don't usually get intense feels from my art. I'd say the one that makes me the most 🥺 is this one of Waxer and Boil in a post-Umbara fix-it setting? (I'm not sure the image will display because the terrible site I use for hosting images on AO3 has been down off and on all day 😑)
Thanks again for the ask! <3

Various Authors - Dragon #53 (September 1981)
Tumblr media
Right on the cover we get a bit of Dungeons & Dragons history, with the first of many contributions by Clyde Caldwell to the art of Dragon magazine and TSR in general. An artist who would become, together with others like Larry Elmore, eternally associated with the classical 80s period of D&D, particularly when we move towards the fantasy settings of Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms, Clyde represented a shift to a more realistic painterly style which would eventually replace the more expressionistic and cartoonish art of such greats as Erol Otus and Bill Willingham.
Tumblr media
On the inside there are plenty of articles of interest for D&D fans, a couple of them focus on rethinking the Monk class, very often thought of as being the worst class in first edition D&D, so the idea would be to make it a more functional class for players. There is also a new NPC class added, the Oracle, in a really long article that ,as is usual with these NPC articles in Dragon magazine, gives the reader enough information to actually make these PC classes, rather than just NPCs.
Tumblr media
Then there is an article on how to make your campaign world work with D&D, and more importantly in the Up on a Soapbox column we get Judith Sampson, a D&D player with cerebral palsy writing about her experience of playing D&D while having to make adjustments due to her disability, a really fascinating article and not the kind of story that Dragon focused too much on. Then we have a one off AD&D adventure which had won their module contest, Lakofka's column covering how to make doors more interesting in AD&D, and the usual Bestiary and comics entries.

I have no idea if this will be a two part post or a series of things, but I wanted to write a little about Forgotten Realms for new BG3 fans. I decided the best start was here:
Baldur's Gate Primer: Fantasy Kitchen Sink and CRPGs
The Forgotten Realms began as an official campaign setting for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons ("1e") in 1987 and published by TSR Inc, the gaming company that originally published D&D.
Since its introduction, the Forgotten Realms' world of Toril has been wildly popular, jumping over the then more established Greyhawk, Dragonlance, and several other settings whose influences were based High Middle Ages Northern and Central Europe (and the unfortunate implications of Central Asian Nomads with monsters such as orcs and goblins). Ed Greenwood is the loving (if slightly horny) creator of the Realms, though many authors have written stories within the setting for several good reasons.
The Realms is an excellent Fantasy Kitchen Sink.
While Toril has several European influences, it has little to do with High Middle Ages in world building and more to do with 19th century based on nation states with the aesthetics of the Late Renaissance in terms of art, culture, and technology.
Toril also took inspiration from other cultures with their nations and continents:
The first of Toril's continents written about was Kara-Tur, which was introduced before the 'official campaign book' and heavily focused based on East Asian.
Another continent based on Central Indigenous nations (Mayan and Aztec) called Maztica, who are giving the Faerun colonists hell due to their magic and their immune systems, and consider themselves the 'True World'.
There’s the nation of Zakhara that’s based between Faerun and Kara-Tur, making it a touch on the nose since it's based on Arabian Nights.
The nation Chult is based after the Congo Basin rainforest, though it really seems like whoever made this development slept through Heart of Darkness. (It went away for a little while, but it's back now.)
Meanwhile Calimshan and Mulhorand are based after Morocco and Egypt.
Bear in mind, despite good intentions that Ed Greenwood and TSR had, a lot of the old lore comes off as Orientalist, and WotC hasn't done much to update it save slapping a disclaimer on PDF files and not much else with these settings save a bare description.
However, if some dork-ass tells you that Wyll and BIPOC are going against the lore accuracy, tell them to fuck off. The Forgotten Realm was introduced with a BIPOC setting despite it’s flaws.
Due to the diversity of the 'Realms', the setting has attracted writers, artists, and campaign designers who developed some of D&D's most iconic characters and thus influenced a lot of how D&D's multiverse structure. Players loved the lore of the Realms and the feeling their characters could be from anywhere and do anything. This is in contrast to Greyhawk never really growing past it's War Game boundaries as a world and Dragonlance's creators being highly protective of it's inflexible plot with the lack of multiple settings.
So it made sense when TSR approached the game developer SISI with their Gold Box Engine with the Forgotten Realms in mind. SISI's first D&D based game is called Pool of Radiance, and the game took place in Faerun’s Moonsea region in the ruins of Phlan, where adventurers fought off undead and fiends to help give a new city a fighting chance in rebuilding. While SISI would dabble in Dragonlance and Dark Sun (a post apocalyptic setting that is so fucking grim dark, Githyanki ran away from Dark Sun's world of Athas screaming), most of their games were based in Forgotten Realms.
For those curious about the Gold Box Game series: when BG1 was my 13 year-old-heart's special interest, I played them. It's really, really weird because so much of the story is in the manual and clunky as fuck. But I was itching to play anything DnD at the time.
In 1997, TSR was purchased in 1997 by Wizards of the Coast (WotC), though it allowed the continued development of yet another CRPG set in the Realms by a then unknown company called Bioware. In 1998, Bioware released Baldur's Gate and using the Infinity Engine Bioware, Black Isle, and WotC would continue to make several games including BG2, BG:TOB, and Neverwinter Nights before parting ways in 2006 with Bioware. Bioware would then focus on its own wildly successful CRPG IPs.
By then, WotC was owned by Habsro (since 1999) and after two decades of excellent turn based CRPGs, they stopped focus on the genre when Neverwinter Nights 2 didn’t do as well as its predecessor and focused on different genres such as Hack’n’Slash, Action Adventure, and Boardgames - though they were all set in the Forgotten Realms.
However one of these games would reach the popularity of the Gold Box, Infinity, or Aurora engine based games (BG, Icewind Dale, and Planescape Torment) . The only turned based CRPGs that were released from 2007 to 2020  were remakes of the Infinity Engine games by Beamdog Studios who attempted to get the rights to make BG3.
WotC declined Beamdog, deciding to approach Larian studios instead for Baldur’s Gate 3 in 2016, likely wanting to approach a style closer to Neverwinter Nights rather than isometric. Due to D&D new popularity, both companies expected that BG3 would do well, but neither company had any idea how big Baldur’s Gate 3 would be.
I'm likely going to do a post on the important historical events in the Realms mentioned in BG3 - and some that are not.

Kinda random, but reposting my Twitter thread about how despite their loudly proclaimed superiority, conservatives haven't made as much of a splash in culture and the arts as they say they should. Check out an except from this essay a righty wrote on his blog, concerning the literary influences of the old Dungeons and Dragons games:
Tumblr media
I was reading this essay by a righty extolling, as they usually do, the virtues of Old Books, especially those written before everything went "woke," in this case being the guys who inspired Gygax in making AD&D-Vance, Howard (conan), etc. (2/14)
This isn't uncommon on the right, obviously, but what really interests me is his attitude to the Old Books, which reflects something often seen on the right, and which, in my view, is a reason they tend to undermine themselves in the arts. (3/14)
Look at how he talks about classic 80s D&D authors who nevertheless weren't the 60s-70s inspiration for the game themselves: Weis and Hickman were just imitations of the "Platonic Form" of Vance. (4/14)
It's very common theme in right-wing thought: That there was some Golden Age in the past, or in this case some Ideal, and everything since then/farther than that is just a decline and the best we can hope for is just imitation (5/14)
Now, right-wingers like this guy always make a show about how they're making fiction/art that Sticks It to the Libs by consciously imitating the Glory Days of the 80s, or even before that, the mid-century pulps, before Woke. (6/14)
Here's the thing, though: Their very worldview gives their prospective customers a perfect reason not to actually buy anything they make, for the reasons laid out, or at least alluded to, in the guy's post I screenshotted. (7/14).
The old greats--Howard, Vance, etc.--were closer to the Great Story than we are? And even non-woke masters like the Dragonlance authors were just shadows of Vance? So why should we believe you, o rightwing author, are any closer to greatness? (8/14)
Yeah, you don't know what you're missing out on if you've only had reheated dinners. But the right-wing artist, by his own admission, isn't providing anything but a reheated dinner-the real good meals were and are the original Vance, Howard, etc. (9/14)
So in that case...why should I ever buy anything from this guy, or Vox Day, or Castalia house, or any of the rest of them? I can get the original Good Old Books, rather than just imitations, much cheaper (and in many cases free) (10/14)
"Woke" authors nowadays, on the other hand...you can say they're unskilled, you can say they're completely callow in their lack of knowledge and appreciation of the past, you can say they're nothing compared to the greats, but...(11/14)
You have to admit they're much better at marketing than their adversaries, the 'traditional' righties. They can at least make the case they're making something new, even if it sucks or even if it actually is just a crappy imitation (12/14),
And thus, the people listening to them will be motivated to actually go out and buy their work, whereas a conservative writer's fans will just go back to the Good Stuff of Vance and Howard rather than shell out for an imitator. (13/14)
You do not have to be a genius to figure out that the lefty's approach will lead to more sales and thus more reach in the culture over the long term. 14/14 (END)
