Reasons Why I Love Chu Wanning, A Non-Exhaustive List

His love language veers wildly between “I will sacrifice myself for you in any number of painful, horrific ways, but I will never actually say I care for you” and “wontons”.

How FUNNY he is, usually without trying to be.

His first thought on being turned into a six-year-old is “oh awesome I can eat all the sweets I want now, because all these teeth are just going to fall out anyways”.

How his reaction to “oh the man I love just walked into the room while I am naked and bathing” is a) to think about how to blind said man, and b) to then order said man to wash his back. I cannot stress enough that Chu Wanning thought this was the optimal solution for his problem, and also that Mo Ran would be so disinterested that he wouldn’t care about Chu Wanning’s nudity.

He’s so powerful!! I dunk on him all the time for being so useless and ridiculous but he has THREE spiritual weapons! THREE. This man is walking around with a cosmic amount of power at his disposal and he spends most of his time on night hunts, inventing things to help the common folk, and doing the grunt work even members of his own sect don’t want to perform.

There’s that section in his POV where he’s thinking about how when he was younger, he wanted to have someone beside him, to love and to cherish, but when they never came, he got all closed off and cold, and now he’s scared to reach out to anyone because what if he makes all that effort and there’s no one there reaching back? The caterpillar chewing its way through its cocoon!! Chu Wanning!

The fact that the entire cultivation world thinks that Chu Wanning is the Most Lawful Good Ever, but in reality Chu Wanning’s alignment is just Chaotic Awkward Horny, with a side of “instead of brain there is Mo Ran”.

This does not change the fact that Chu Wanning is one of the most honorable, just, brave, and kind characters in the entire book, if not THE most.

His unexpected kindness!! He’s one of the few people to take the time to hear all of Luo Xianxian’s story, he manages to comfort Xue Meng post-Jincheng Lake, he’s constantly protecting his disciples at the cost of his own safety and well-being, he pushes past his fears because he wants to do more to help people...

His penchant for experiencing one feeling, usually a horny one, and then running away because he can’t handle it.

He’s such a brat!! SUCH A BRAT. The tantrum he throws when he needs to try on his robes pre-wedding!

When someone wishes him a happy birthday, his reply is “you too”.

His capacity for forgiveness and acceptance is infinite.

“Two lifetimes, they belong to you. No regrets.”

In regards to the ending of Shadow and Bone season 2. Did I like it? Absolutely not. Do I see what they’re trying do? Yeah. They combined two books into one season and added five extra characters to the story. Things just moved so fast, and the story could’ve been told a LOT better.

For instance, we did not get Alina’s struggle. I think the beauty of her story in the books came from her needing to defeat the Darkling without becoming the monster he was and wanted her to be. It was an intense and dark path she took. Ultimately, the third amplifier’s power is shared with everyone to destroy the Fold. But the fact that she had to get to that point where she was okay with dying and/or being completely overwhelmed by the power if it meant saving everyone was the whole point of her struggle. Her reward was Mal, settling down with him to live a peaceful life. And she was ready to be done, to give it all up and just rest with him.

The fact that they skipped ALL of that makes the story so unnecessarily complicated. Because now she’s not ready to rest, she wants to help the Grisha. And she’s got power. But she delved into merzost to save Mal, so now she’s given into this path of darkness. That’s something book!Alina NEVER would have done. Leigh spent three books showing that. So now she’s got that darkness in her. And we know Elizaveta is going to try to resurrect the Darkling because that bee landed on Zoya as the Darkling’s body burned. So season 3 is going to go off the rails.

Also the fact that Mal made this BIG DEAL to the Darkling about how he wasn’t going to make the mistake of leaving Alina again and then the Fold is gone and the Darkling is dead and now he’s just leaving Alina? That’s just poor writing.

I’m hoping Alina and Mal still get their happy ending. Because TV!Mal deserves it, if nothing else.

Also it really bothers me that they just pushed Zoya aside for Alina. They could’ve sent Alina and Mal off into the sunset and let the story take its course. But now Zoya is a side character because Alina is the focus. And that really bothers me that they’re going to start the King of Scars storyline and not give Zoya the attention she deserves. Because Alina needs to be gone for her to embrace her destiny. Otherwise it looks like she’s just Nikolai’s (and Ravka’s) second choice. They messed with Leigh’s beautifully crafted hero’s journey for Alina, and Zoya is going to get screwed over because they did that and I HATE THAT for Zoya.

Actually no re: that post from @kintatsujo, one of my favorite details in Hunchback of Notre Dame comes at the end of Hellfire

Because yes, Hellfire is the one of the greatest villain songs of our age, I will die on this hill; Frollo is the most terrifying and monstrous Disney villain of Disney in general and the Disney Renaissance in particular because there is no magic, no mythology, no godhood – there is just a man and his bigotry and his lust struggling against his sacred duty —

And yet —

At the very end of Hellfire, Frollo holds the last note of "she will be mine or she will burn" for a ridiculously long time, long enough for the main chorale leitmotif to play out in its entirety, and even before he drops the note the choir has disappeared and Frollo is left alone in a cold-toned stone corridor.

There is no Inquisition here; there is no sacred choir, there is no church or Church (he's not even in Notre Dame, he's in his own personal quarters), there is no promise of divine retribution, there is no Hellfire. There is simply a man in the cold dark stone corridors of his quarters, squaring with his own insatiable desire and guilt against the responsibilities of his office and the divine calling, with nobody to hear or witness but the wind whistling.

(Contrast literally all of Sanctuary, where Notre Dame herself and implicitly the saints and even God work to free Quasimodo, rescue Esmeralda, and subsequently protect and defend those who stand against injustice, and thus excoriate and ultimately destroy those who oppress the innocent and oppose the will of God. The choir absolutely demands a plea for salvation from the fires of Hell over the course of this scene from long before the moment Frollo ignites Esmeralda's pyre, culminating in "Save me, immolated Savior, who opens the gates of heaven; hostile wars oppress, give vigor, bring salvation; be the glory everlasting, glory, glory, always glory, in the highest" with the sopranos absolutely belting sanctus sanctus in excelsis landing as Quasimodo frees Esmeralda and bellows Sanctuary — the compassion and will of God comes down embodied in Quasimodo to free one injustly condemned, and then continues in Quasimodo and in Notre Dame herself to defend holy ground and repel injust invaders looking to desecrate her grounds in the name of false piety. What counsel shall be called to defend, when even the just man can hardly be secure?)

Frollo spends the entirety of Hellfire justifying himself and his actions, begging for forgiveness and absolution and justification, and at the end it's just him. He has been offered sanctification - every time he pleads "it's not my fault, I'm not to blame" the choir echoes mea culpa, mea maxima culpa (by my own fault, by my own most grievous fault), and so in the end It's just him. It is his own finger-pointing and condemnation turned inward, and it's such a good visceral and physical representation of how isolating that rigid mentality and false piety can be from actual repentance, forgiveness, and grace.

So no one told me how FREAKING COOL the glass scientist comics were.

So I was wanting to get more into the Jekyll n Hyde stuff bc I was doin research on the novel lyric hunt characters for fun and remembered the comic being mentioned to me a while ago.

Fast forward I spent the next 4 HOURS reading the ENTIRE thing and I love it so much like I cannot express how much I need the next page.(ITS SO AT A CLIMAX)
