Day One Hundred Thirty-Seven
So this is currently in progress...
Tumblr media
Unsurprisingly, all after school activities were canceled, and we're basically all just waiting for The Superintendent to call off school tomorrow. If he does, it'll end up being a remote learning day because we've hit our three snow day max already, but still.
Anyways.
It was a good day today. I had my "B" sections of Global Studies doing the same thing their peers in my "A" sections did yesterday: reading, drafting current events write-ups, making up missing work. Both sections were productive, though I did have to encourage that productivity at some points. Two victories: actually getting to help a student who finds writing challenging but has been reluctant to ask for help (and getting to tell him "well done" when he submitted his work); having positive interactions with a student I've had to write up for various discipline issues, and successfully encouraging him to get some reading done. I was pretty happy about that!
In APGOV, we had a guest speaker: Mr. H, who is a friend, former colleague, and former state rep! He's been working with a group that drafted and is proposing a new town charter, and that's what he came in to discuss. Mr. I's APUSH students joined mine to learn about what a town charter is and what this one would do, and it was really cool. The kids are a lot more curious about local politics than most people expect, and they had tons of questions about how certain things work now and how that would change if this new charter was adopted. Obviously, for my course, this is out of sequence- more on local government after the AP exam- but that's fine. After the presentation was over, we got back to the Civil Rights Movement and, more specifically, the March On Washington and the efforts by the Kennedy and then Johnson administrations to get the Civil Rights Act of 1964 through Congress.
Since I didn't have practice in the afternoon, I took a minute to write a lengthy email to my department (because I'm assuming we won't have PLC meetings tomorrow). It's mostly about course stuff for next year; since I got the information, I've been building schedules, figuring out how many sections of each course we'll need and who will be teaching them, which is like putting a puzzle together. Oh, and the issues that arose while I was trying to order textbooks yesterday were resolved, so I'm back to being mostly good as a department head. Whew!

Lecturing aboard Cruise Ships
youtube
One of the greatest thrills of my career is presenting maritime lectures and talks in front of an audience. A lot of work goes into them; from researching the topics to putting slides together, but it’s worth every second for the chance to share the ocean liner story.
One of the trickiest parts is working out what stories in the long and illustrious history of the ocean liner to include. Sometimes serious culling is required to achieve the end result of a fast paced, informative and engaging talk.
My lectures generally run for about 45 minutes and cover a range of topics spanning from the 1830s to today. I’m always happy to chat after the lecture so if you’re attending one of my talks come and say hi and share your story.
What do I talk about?
It’s probably no surprise that my maritime lecture topics cover ocean liners and cruise ships past and present.
However, what’s really interesting about this subject is how ocean liners have been involved in almost every world event. As such, the talks offer glimpses into Victorian life, the evolution of technologies such as steam engines, electric lighting and turbines, as well as the militarisation of ships during both World Wars.
Some of my topics include:
The evolution of passenger ship design,
The changing use of passenger ships, from mail services, immigration, tourism and modern cruising,
How the ocean liner evolved into the cruise ship in the jet age,
Ocean Liners during World War I and World War II,
Disasters such as Titanic and Lusitania, and the lessons learnt from these tragedies,
Cunard Line, White Star Line and P&O History, as well as talks that cover many other shipping lines such as Collins Line, Inman Line, Orient Line, Norddeutscher Lloyd, Hamburg-Amerika, CGT French Line, Italia Line, United States Lines… to name a few!
Where do I talk?
My first ever maritime lecture was in August 2008 aboard the QE2 during a Mediterranean cruise that was part of her farewell season. Speaking aboard QE2 had been a long-term goal of mine so I jumped at the opportunity and haven’t looked back.
Since then I’ve spoken at venues all over the world including many engagements on various cruise ships. Some highlights include engagements aboard Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria for Cunard, P&O UK's Aurora and P&O Australia’s Pacific Eden, Pacific Jewel and Pacific Explorer.
I regularly speak at maritime museums, with recent engagements at the Australian National Maritime Museum, New Zealand Maritime Museum and Sea City Museum in Southampton England.
I have also been a keynote speaker at conferences and events including two engagements at the Cancer Council’s annual fundraising luncheon at the Hilton Hotel.

Today, i was invited to my teacher friend's fourth grade class to bring in fish for their aquarium. I had set it up before school started, and it's been cycling for a good 3-4 weeks.
The kids have been so anxious about when they would be getting fish for it. Every morning, they'd rush to see if there were fish in it yet. My friend had told them that there would be fish in it by the end of September, so you can imagine their fury when they walked in this morning - the last day of September - and there were still no fish.
We'd planned for this, of course. Betrayed as they were, they didn't see me sneak by the cafeteria when they went to lunch, fish in hand. While they ate and went to recess, i did a quick water change and acclimated 3 mollies, 15 danios, and 5 Corydoras. It's a 20 gallon tank, so they've got lots of room, and i planted it out with lots of anubias, java Fern, and dwarf hair grass. They've got a lot to explore.
With 5 minutes to spare, i stuffed myself under my friends desk and text her to let her know everything is ready. Moments later i hear her outside the class, using the pinnacle of teacher-voices, "ok fourth grade! Let's calmly and quietly go back to the classroom, and get ready for the next lesson!"
The shuffling and loud whispering of 9-10 year olds follows. I can't see them, but i listen as they return to seats and rummage through backpacks until-
"THERES FISHIES IN THE TANK!!!!!"
And with that single child's yell, the class erupted into utter chaos. Children cheering, yelling, and scrambling to the back of the classroom to see for themselves. My friend acts just as shocked as them for effect.
"we must've been visited by the fish fairy!"
Some kids scoffed at that, up until i sprang out from under the desk and yelled "I AM THE FISH FAIRY!"
To which they screamed at, because a stranger just appeared out of nowhere and yelled at them. Pandemonium. Truly.
The following 2 hours, i gave them a talk about fish care and ecosystems, and all sorts of science things, and apparently it was kind of the most well behaved my friend had ever seen them. She was genuinely surprised to see so many of them actually raising their hands before speaking, and that there were barely any side conversations. Now that i think about it, i am too. Cause that's. That's 2 fucking hours of kids sitting still and listening and asking questions. With minimal interruptions.
I mean, given, my autistic ass is So Happy to talk about my hyperfocus in animal care, that i absolutely did not limit myself to talking about fish, like i was supposed to. And kids, of course are terrible at keeping on track. So perhaps it was my willingness to jump from marine life to snakes to birds to spider and back to fish, and snakes again, and oh that reminds me did you guys know this about frogs? But I'm shocked i had most of those kid's full attention.
I let them fiddle with things as i talked, cause i fiddled with things. Half the time i didn't notice if they raised their hand or not (though often my friend would stop them and make them raise their hand before continuing. Then both me and the kid would give her a funny look. I'm sorry friend, i was in Talking About special interest mode.) As soon as they learned i was THE person who cared for all the animals at Petco, they jumped at every chance to get me to talk about every other animal under the sun, and we're So Enthralled that i had an answer for nearly every "what's your favorite (thing)" question that they asked. I could have stood there answering all those questions all day, had my friend not cut us off to get us back to talking about the class tank when a kid asked me what my favorite planet was. (I told them i didn't have a favorite planet, but that the moon Eris was my favorite space object. That's how far i got into that subject before my friend cut me off, because she knows that Deep Space Objects is ANOTHER hyper specific interest of mine, and if they got me talking about black holes, we'd never come back)
This is all to say, god i fucking love working with kids. Ive really missed it. I'd never want to be an actual teacher, but I'm so good at being that weird adult who shows up in a kids life and teaches them the wildest things. The outdoor educator is so strong in me, and it really shows in which kids were my favorite. My friend loves the kids who are quiet and don't interrupt, whereas my favorites were the ones who wouldn't shut up, even if i constantly had to tell them not to interrupt me. I'm just so enthralled with seeing the passion and excitement to learn!! The quiet kids, while i didn't have to tell them to be quiet, they never asked me anything (except one timid girl who i could barely hear, bless her heart) i wanna yoink those loud chatty kids and set them off into the wild and show them bugs under rocks and dig a hole with them. I wanna teach them, but not in some stuffy classroom where they gotta sit still. These kids would flourish in an outdoor classroom where you learn hands on.
God this is such a long post but today was so fun and makes me wanna be some sort of sub or guest speaker so much more.

My high school is having one of the founders of Wattpad come in as a guest speaker speaker this Friday. Don’t know whether to laugh or cry, but I have a feeling we are going to be in for some entertainment. Today, we had therapy dogs.

Day One Hundred Thirty-Three
Teaching a lesson "move when ready" style worked for the past two days of Global Studies, so I decided to do it again today with all four sections. They had to read their books, then- if they had time- they had to check my feedback on the writing prompt they'd done last class and revise if they hadn't earned full credit. If they still had time after that, they had to make up any work they owed me. A lot of students really took advantage of that, and- as they say- locked in. It was great for their learning. Odds of me doing this again tomorrow? High.
Tom White walked in as I was wrapping up my second section (because he was guest lecturing in my APGOV class), so he heard the tail end of some banter about cell phones and TikTok and whatnot. Then the bell rang, the GOV kids came in, and for the next eighty-ish minutes he taught them about the eugenics movement, how it's tied to both the American white supremacist movement and Nazi Germany, how it influenced policy, what echoes we hear in the discourse today. It's shocking history, and, well, my students were shocked. They had some great comments and questions, though, and were really receptive to Tom's closing message, which is that hate didn't win, and that, so long as they stay engaged and aware, hate cannot win.
It's a powerful lesson, and one I look forward to recapping with them tomorrow.
It's still gross, rainy, and cold, so the sprinters ran hallway repeats and did some agility drills today. We're going outside no matter what tomorrow, though, because the traditional Easter egg hunt must occur!

What Is Foursquare? (mp3) (video)
Jim & Melinda Scott on January 28, 2024
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
On this Sunday we were celebrating the 40th anniversary of Grace Chapel being a Foursquare Church with a special presentation about the history of our denomination and its founder and how that history relates to us today.
