Animanga History #1: Attack No. 1
It's no secret that volleyball is a popular sport in animanga- just look at the incredible success of Haikyu!! : Decisive Battle at the Garbage Dump, the fifth largest opening weekend for a JP movie ever. But where did the obsession start?
In 1968, with a shoujo manga by the name of Attack No. 1
(though Haikyuu!! might have found more inspiration in its rival The V Sign!). A series spurred on by a women's factory team taking the competitive (and subsequently Olympic) volleyball world by storm, the two events represent a huge change in tidings for anime and manga, though specifically in this case in relation to shoujo. So, come take a look at the incredibly interesting and surprisingly impressive history that Chikako Urano's second ever serialized work has left behind.

What better way to celebrate Valentine's day than with the ultimate rivals to lovers storyline: Haikyuu the movie: decisive battle at the garbage dump !!!
Ok but on a serious note I do think haikyuu is a perfect rivals-to-lovers storyline, not in terms of the individual characters but like... each team as a whole. Karasuno and Nekoma (conceptually) are such soulmates. One team that's extremely well-coordinated, solid, and skilled at defense that doesn't need prodigies to be formidable. Another team that's extremely aggressive, rough around the edges, has a lot of weaknesses but a few prodigies to keep things together.
They learn from each other, they grow together. There's no resentment, only camaraderie. One's strength is the other's weakness. They want to defeat each other. They want to play together. They want to be the winner when it ends. They never want it to end.
If this isn't rivals-to-lovers personified idk what is

~~Haikyuu Movie~~
Because there's no news for the international release yet, I flew to Japan, in excitement and desperation, just to watch these sweet hq boys 🥹
It did not disappoint.
I would say I echo the sentiment of those who would've preferred a series release, but the pacing was actually reasonable given the short 90 minutes.
I do wish it was longer, but fret not, for they did the manga justice. At least in my own opinion.
This movie, in its entirety, is between Nekoma vs Karasuno only and then a short snippet of the Little Giant. Given the timeline, I'm not sure if the timeskip will even be animated in the next movie since there's still two games left in the manga. Fingers crossed though🤞
I wish the 2nd movie would come sooner 😢
Also, the animation was chef's kiss, and the flashbacks were paced just right 🧡
