#Hispanic Caucus
Text
The Supreme Court could hand down a decision on student-loan forgiveness as soon as Thursday — and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she is ready for any outcome.
On Wednesday, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus held a press conference on upholding President Joe Biden's plan to cancel up to $20,000 in student debt for federal borrowers. Since November, the plan as been paused due to two conservative-backed lawsuits. The Supreme Court is expected to decide on the legality of the relief in the coming days.
While millions of student-loan borrowers are waiting to learn if they will resume payments in October with a reduction to their balances, Ocasio-Cortez said during the press conference that progressive lawmakers will work to ensure borrowers will receive debt cancellation, one way or the other.
"We are prepared in the event of any outcome in this ruling," Ocasio-Cortez said. "We are here to fight, and we are here to make sure, and encourage, and have the President's back, in making sure that this cancellation goes through for the millions of people in the United States."
She added that her progressive colleagues will not take the Supreme Court's decision "lying down," saying that "we are prepared, we are here to fight, and we stand with you."
Ocasio-Cortez has been among some other Democratic lawmakers who have urged Biden to prepare a backup plan should the Supreme Court rule against his debt-relief plan. As Insider previously reported, some lawmakers have suggested Biden could use the Higher Education Act to deliver relief to millions of borrowers, which does not rely on the existence of a national emergency. Still, the White House has not yet publicly comment on any alternate routes it would consider in the event of an adverse ruling.
Additionally, the Education Department confirmed that student-loan payments are resuming in October, with interest beginning to accrue again in September. Given the debt-ceiling bill Biden recently signed into law codified the end of the student-loan payment pause, the department cannot provide additional relief for borrowers — even if the Supreme Court strikes down broad student-loan forgiveness.
Amid the push to ensure relief for borrowers, though, Republican lawmakers have been pursuing different routes to block student-loan forgiveness without waiting for the Supreme Court ruling. The GOP recently passed a bill that would overturn the relief — Biden vetoed it — and Congress will vote on overriding that veto this week.
For now, all eyes are on the Supreme Court to see how it decides Biden's student-loan forgiveness plan for millions of borrowers is legal. "Is the President prepared to re-administer the loan forgiveness program?" Ocasio-Cortez previously told Politico. "And I think this is the most crucial question."

2024 Senate Elections: You'd Better VOTE!
Yes it's election year yet again in America! but not just for President, almost as important will be the US Senate!
Tumblr media
I'm not gonna lie this is a rough map for Democrats, we're playing a lot of defense in some pretty red states with even our best hopes for a pick up being pretty long shots. But even with narrow control of the Senate we've managed the biggest climate bill in American History a huge infrastructure bill thats bring high speed rail to America capped the price of insulin changed the law to allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices bring savings to everyone, and put over 160 federal judges on the bench, 2/3rds of whom are women and/or people of color the first time white men haven't been the majority of nominees by a President. So let's keep progress going by voting for, supporting, donating, and volunteering for the following candidates in the races that will decide the US Senate this year.
Arizona
Ruben Gallego (Hold)
Tumblr media
After frustrating Democrats by repeatedly voting against major Democratic priorities, supporting the filibuster and putting donors over voters, Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema left the Democratic Party to become an independent in 2022. Democratic congressman Ruben Gallego was running to primary Sinema before she left the party and is now the likely Democratic nominee to unseat her and give Arizona the Democratic Senator it deserves. Gallego is a former Marine, combat veteran, Harvard grad, a former state representative, and since 2014 a member of Congress. Gallego is a member of the Progressive Caucus and is known for his blunt and combative style standing up to Republicans. In Congress Gallego has been a strong supporter of native rights advocating for tribes on health care and child welfare issues. Gallego is also the sponsor of a bill to bring about nation wide, free, all-day kindergarten which isn't available in many states. If elected Gallego would be Arizona's first hispanic Senator. Republicans hope that the Democratic vote will split between Sinema and Gallego allowing them to win this important seat. The Republican front runner is conspiracy theorist and Trump super fan, Kari Lake. Lake rose to national fame in 2021 for pushing conspiracy theories about Trump having won the 2020 election, as well as anti-mask and anti-vaccine Covid conspiracies. Lake was the Republican nominee for Arizona governor in 2022. During that campaign she ran on an aggressive anti-LGBT platform, saying she'd ban drag, and was against trans rights. Lake also is against Abortion in all cases. After losing to Democrat Katie Hobbs, Lake refused to concede, and still pushes the conspiracy theory that she's the rightful governor of Arizona. If you live in Arizona please make sure you vote, but more if you have any time between now and November, volunteer to help Gallego! and if you don't live there you can still Donate or buy a pro-choice shirt from his campaign!

Florida
Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (Flip)
Tumblr media
Florida's current Republican Senator Rick Scott is a right wing extremist pushing dangerous ideas even by the standards of the Modern GOP. During his first term as Senator Scott has pushed to defund the IRS, and the Department of Education. He's sponsored bills to punish schools that allow students to use preferred pronouns, to ban affirmative action, bans teaching critical race theory, and ban trans people from women's sports. Scott is against abortion in all cases. Most alarming Rick Scott proposed a radical plan that would "sun-set" ANY and all federal laws after 5 years, including Social Security and Medicare, Scott would place all federal programs and agencies on the chopping block every 5 years for a radical Republican minority to block their renewal and leave us without Social Security, or the EPA, to name just two examples. The likely Democratic nominee is former Congresswoman Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. Born in Ecuador, Mucarsel-Powell immigrated to the US when she was 14 and had work to help support her family. When she was elected to Congress in 2018 she became the first South American born immigrant and first person of Ecuadorian heritage to be elected to Congress. In Congress Mucarsel-Powell was a member of the Progressive caucus, she fought to expand medicare, and secured $200 million for Everglades restoration. After a narrow defeat in 2020 Mucarsel-Powell joined the gun control advocacy group Giffords to fight for gun control a personal issue for her after her father was murdered when she was 24. If you're in Florida please make sure you vote, and Volunteer to help remove on of the most extreme Senators, If you're not in Florida you can help Debbie win by donating.

Michigan
Elissa Slotkin (hold)
Tumblr media
Long time Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow is retiring this election, so there will be a tough fight for control of this important swing state Senate seat. The likely Democratic nominee is Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin. Slotkin is a former CIA analyst, after retiring from the CIA she worked in the State and Defense departments during the Obama administration. Slotkin was first elected to Congress in 2018 winning and being re-elected in a tough swing district. In Congress she's fought for common sense gun control, supported the cap on insulin prices and Medicare drug price negotiation, she helped pass a law on drug price transparency, she championed the CHIP act to bring high tech manufacturing jobs back to America, and was a big supporter of Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Slotkin is centering a pro-choice message in her campaign as well as gun control and bring down medical costs. Who the Republicans will pick isn't totally clear, it seems like it's between Former Congressman Mike Rogers and former Detroit Police chief James Craig. Craig ran for Michigan governor in 2022 before he was disqualified for fraudulent signatures on his nominating petition. Craig has listed cutting off US support to Ukraine as one of his top priorities, and endorsed Trump's 3rd run for President early in the primaries. Mike Rogers is also trying to win over Trump voters and has attacked the rights of LGBT students in schools calling it "social engineering". If you live in Michigan make sure to get out and vote, and also volunteer! And for everyone outside the state you can donate or buy some merch.

Montana
Jon Tester (re-elect)
Tumblr media
In most contexts Montana is a deep red state going for Trump in 2020 57% to 40%. This makes the reelection of Montana's only Democratic member of Congress and only statewide elected Democrat, Jon Tester maybe the toughest election for Democrats this year. A Senator since he was first elected in 2006 Tester has won a series of upset wins in Montana over the years. A 3rd generation farmer Tester has been as strong for small farmers and ranchers in Washington. Tester has always been a champion of accountably and transparency in government pushing ethnics and campaign finance reforms. Tester is rated one of the most effective senators and managed to pass more bills last year than any one else in Congress. He's never been afraid to stand up for the Democratic side even if it'd be an unpopular vote in Red Montana. Tester voted to impeach Trump twice, and he voted against all 3 of Trump's nominees to the Supreme Court. He supported President Obama on The Affordable Care Act and Dodd-Frank, and has supported President Biden on the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Republicans seem likely to nominate right wing influencer and former Navy SEAL Tim Sheehy. Sheehy promises to get drag queens out of schools and the Lord's Prayer in to the classroom. He also hopes to repeal Obamacare calling for a "total privatization" of health care and made statements against the very idea of health insurance, insisting people should pay full price at point of use. If you're a Montanan make sure to vote to re-elect a champion of the little guy, and also volunteer! if you're not please think of donating what you can, if you can only give to one campaign this cycle this one, or Ohio are the most important!

Nevada
Jacky Rosen (re-elect)
Tumblr media
First elected to Congress in 2016 Jacky Rosen moved up to the Senate in 2018. In her first term as a Senator Rosen has championed green energy for Nevada. Together with fellow Democratic Nevada Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Rosen has gotten millions for solar manufacturing in Nevada as well as millions to replace the state's school buses with electric, and programs to study new groundbreaking green technology. Senator Rosen has been a supporter of gun control, is in favor of banning assault weapons. She sponsored a bill, the Background Check Expansion Act, that would require background checks for all gun sales closing loopholes for on-line sales and gun shows. Rosen is pro-choice and has sponsored a bill to protect doctors from being prosecuted across state lines for providing reproductive care, and is a co-sponsor of a bill to codify Roe V. Wade into federal law. Rosen will likely face Republican celebrity and army veteran Sam Brown. Brown ran and lost a race for the Texas State House in 2014 and ran and lost for Nevada's other Senate seat in 2022. Brown stated he was in favor of getting rid of the Departments of Education, Transportation, and Energy. Brown is against Red Flag gun laws that allow police to temporarily remove fire arms from the home of someone deemed a danger to themselves or others. Brown also has refused to say if he supports a national abortion ban, but does say he's pro-life and wouldn't support any judges that weren't. If you live in Nevada make sure to get out to vote and volunteer to protect the state's green future and the right to reproductive care. If you're not in Nevada consider donating or buying some merch.

Ohio
Sherrod Brown (re-elect)
Tumblr media
Ohio together with Montana represents the toughest re-elect for Democrats this year. The state went for Trump twice, elected a right wing radical, JD Vaince, to the Senate in 2022 and has had a Republican governor since 2010. To complicate thing more Democrat Sherrod Brown is one of the most progressive members of the Senate, regularly scoring along side Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren for the most left wing in the Senate. From the time he was first elected to Congress in 1992 Brown refused to take the Congressional Health Insurance until all Americans could be covered. Brown first supported a Medicare for all bill in 2006 and has supported different efforts to expand Medicare and health coverage. He was a key supporter of the Children Health Insurance Program (CHIP). Brown is a strong supporter of unions and has struggled his whole career to protect unionized manufacturing jobs in Ohio. He was one of the first Senators out on the picket line during the UAW strike of 2023. Brown's hard work has help make Ohio the center of a new booming lithium battery manufacturing in America, a green manufacturing future for the state. Republicans look likely to nominate former used car dealer and father-in-law of Republican Congressman Max Miller, Bernie Moreno. Moreno's main qualification seems to be having been endorsed by Donald Trump. He lists among his priorities "End Socialism in America" and "End Wokeness and Cancel Culture". If you're in Ohio make sure to vote to re-elect a progressive giant and volunteer too! If you live out of Ohio donate, if you're looking for the race where your dollar will matter the most, this one or Montana guys.

Pennsylvania
Bob Casey Jr. (re-elect)
Tumblr media
First elected in 2006 Bob Casey famously beat incumbent Republican homophobe Rick Santorum by 17 points. Since first entering the Senate Casey has moved leftward on a number of issues. First elected as a pro-Gun Democrat since 2012 Casey has sponsored a number of bills to expand background checks, ban assault weapons, ban extended magazines, and well as supporting mental health funds for victims of gun violence. For a number of years Casey was called the last pro-life Democrat in the Senate, however in 2022 he came out in support of Roe V Wade and voted twice on bills that would have codified the right to an abortion into federal law. Casey voted against all 3 of Trump's Supreme Court picks and has long supported Planned Parenthood's contraception efforts with federal funds, seeing easily available birth control as key to reducing the number of abortions. In 2021 Casey published a plan he called "The Five Freedoms for America's Children" modeled after FDR's famous speech. He proposed automatically enrolling all kids in Medicaid, an expanded child tax cut, a federally supported college fund for all kids who's parents make under $100,000, expanded free school meals, more funds for head start and abuse prevention programs. Republicans are rallying behind Mitch McConnell's hand picked candidate, hedge fund CEO David McCormick. McCormick worked for the Bush administration during Bush's second term. McCormick's wife Dina Powell also worked for the George W. Bush administration and was a senior aid to Trump as well. If you're in Pennsylvania make sure to get out and vote for a solid Democrat out to solve child poverty in America and keep the Hedge Fund guy from Connecticut out, and Volunteer if you can. Remember you can donate where ever you are.

Texas
Colin Allred (flip)
Tumblr media
Texas is currently represented by likely the most hated man in Washington, Ted Cruz. Republicans hate him, Democrats hate him more, he has a very punchable face, he might be the zodiac killer (thats a joke and meme). From shutting down the government in 2013 to try to overturn Obamacare, to leading the charge in Congress to overturn the 2020 election on January 6th Ted Cruz is a greatest hits of the worst parts of the Republican Party of the last 10 years. When Texas lost power in the middle of a historic ice storm in 2021 Ted Cruz and family ditched the state to go on vacation in Mexico, classy. Cruz in the Biden years has cast himself as a culture warrior fighting against "woke" publishing a book "Unwoke: How to Defeat Cultural Marxism in America" in 2023 to kick off his re-election campaign. Texas is a traditionally red state but things are starting to shift and in 2018 Cruz narrowly won re-election over Beto O'Rourke. Democrats hope with the right candidate they can turn Texas blue and beat the most hated Senator in America. Democrats think Congressman Colin Allred is the man for the job. Allred is a former NFL Linebacker for the Titans. After the NFL he went on to get his law degree from UC Berkeley, and work in the Obama administration. Allred was first elected to Congress in 2018, unseating a Republican who'd been in office since 1997 and becoming the first Democrat to represent the area in Congress since 1968. In Congress Allred has supported bills to expand voting right and protect abortion rights, as well as gun control. In the Senate he promises to address Texas' shaky power grid and make sure Texas is never left in the dark again with its leaders missing. Lets do this Texas, make blue Texas a reality if you live in Texas remember to vote and volunteer, if you're an American who hates Ted Cruz you can donate to make in unemployed.

Tammy Baldwin (re-elect)

When Tammy Baldwin first ran for Congress in 1998 she was the first openly gay person elected to the US House and the first open Lesbian to serve in Congress. In 2012 she became the first openly gay person elected to the US Senate and the first Lesbian to be a Senator, she is still the only openly gay Senator. Through out her time in office Baldwin has been a tireless voice for LGBT rights, in 2022 she helped spear head the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act to help protect gay marriage, she's also a sponsor of the Equality Act to protect all LGBT people from discrimination. Baldwin is a progressive who was a member of the House Progressive caucus, opposed the Iraq War and supported impeaching Dick Cheney. In the House she introduced bills for a single payer healthcare system in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2005. In the Senate Baldwin is regularly listed as one of the most progressive members, voting against tax cuts for the rich, supporting a bill to require companies to have workers on their boards, she sponsored a bill to create a public option in Health Care, and has supported gun control efforts. The Republican field to challenge Senator Baldwin is uncertain, but former Milwaukee sheriff David Clarke dominates the polls if he decides to run. Clarke's sheriff's department is accused a number of human rights violations from his time as sheriff, including allowing a prisoner to die of dehydration after 6 days without water in the Milwaukee County Jail. Clarke is a Trump super fan who has pushed conspiracy theories about mass shootings being fake, attacked Black Lives Matter, called Planned Parenthood "Planned Genocide", and called for the mass detention without trial of Americans because he believed there were a million ISIS supporters in America. If you're in Wisconsin make sure to get out and vote for a trailblazing icon and also volunteer if you can, all Americans can donate and support Baldwin wherever they are.

According to Israel Hayom, Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has recently begun to meet with “Jewish leaders in her election district.”
OK, so Ariel Kahanah, who reported the story, doesn’t know that AOC represents NY 14, which includes the eastern part of The Bronx and part of north-central Queens. The Queens portion includes Astoria, College Point, Corona, East Elmhurst, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and Woodside. The Bronx portion of the district includes City Island, Country Club, Van Nest, Morris Park, Parkchester, Pelham Bay, Schuylerville, and Throggs Neck.
I checked the UJA databank on the Jewish community of NY 14. It has 26,300 individuals who define themselves as Jews, out of roughly 700,000 residents, who are 50% Hispanic, 17% Asian, and 9% Black.
Out of the Jewish population, 8,400 are 65 and older––1,500 of whom live alone, and 12,400 are ages 40 to 64. 7,600 are poor or near-poor. 3,000 are of Russian origin. 5,600 are biracial. Fewer than 7,000 attend any synagogue, be it Orthodox, Conservative, or Reform.
In other words, AOC very likely did not meet with Jewish leaders in her election district. According to Israel Hayom, she held several closed meetings with a group of rabbis and Jewish leaders, men and women, who belong to the progressive wing of the Jewish community and some of whom are close to J Street.
And this is the bag where the AOC cat has been hiding all along. AOC met with progressive Jews from J Street and similar anti-Zionist, anti-Israel circles. And the reason she had to keep those meetings secret is that even those lefty Jews are kind of pariahs to the squad caucus.

A House Democrat in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) is breaking from the group to call for "tougher" border security measures after the ongoing migrant crisis forced U.S. officials to suspend railway operations between Texas and Mexico in two cities.
The statement by Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, whose district is anchored in Laredo, stands in stark contrast with the CHC’s position on the current border negotiations between Republicans and the White House.
Cuellar said rail operations were being stopped in Eagle Pass and El Paso on Monday morning so Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) could "redirect personnel to process migrants."
"The crisis at our border is seriously affecting legitimate trade," Cuellar wrote the evening prior. "This year alone, vehicle and rail operations have been suspended at multiple ports of entry due to an overwhelming number of migrants, worsening delays for truck drivers transporting goods and costing our economy millions."
He finished, "Our border communities desperately need more federal resources, and we need tougher measures at the border. We must secure the border now."
CBP accused smugglers of using freight trains to bring people into the U.S. illegally in a statement on Sunday night announcing the planned closures for Monday at 8 a.m. local time.
"CBP is continuing to surge all available resources to safely process migrants in response to increased levels of migrant encounters at the Southwest Border, fueled by smugglers peddling disinformation to prey on vulnerable individuals," the statement said.
"After observing a recent resurgence of smuggling organizations moving migrants through Mexico via freight trains, CBP is taking additional actions to surge personnel and address this concerning development, including in partnership with Mexican authorities."
It comes amid intense negotiations between Republicans and Democrats in both the White House and Senate over President Biden’s $110 billion supplemental aid package for Israel, Ukraine and other causes.
Republicans have made clear they would not consider Biden’s request unless it was tied to stricter border security and asylum measures.
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus, which is all-Democrat, released a statement last week urging Biden to show restraint in what he is willing to commit to in managing the border crisis.
"We are deeply concerned that the President would consider advancing Trump-era immigration policies that Democrats fought so hard against – and that he himself campaigned against – in exchange for aid to our allies that Republicans already support," they said. "Caving to demands for these permanent damaging policy changes as a ‘price to be paid’ for an unrelated one-time spending package would send a dangerous precedent."

An immigration deal being crafted in the Senate would limit migrants’ ability to claim asylum at the southern border, a White House concession some progressives say shows that President Biden’s leftward shift on immigration as a 2020 candidate was a blip in his long political career.
The deal, which would come in return for new war aid for Ukraine and Israel, is already facing steep odds on Capitol Hill with House Republicans making tougher demands.
“We have talked about the necessary elements to solve this problem,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) said after a meeting with Biden on Wednesday at the White House. Among them, he added, “is reform to the broken asylum and parole systems.”
Biden’s willingness to negotiate with Republicans lays bare what many liberal Democrats have long feared—that he is willing to move to the right to cut a deal on immigration and secure funding for the wars.
...
“The president has certainly changed his tune from when he campaigned on how important it was to protect and restore the asylum system,” said Rep. Jesus “Chuy” Garcia (D., Ill.), a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
...
In his 2020 bid against former President Donald Trump, Biden briefly revived Democratic hopes of setting a more progressive immigration agenda, bringing on backers of his Democratic primary rival, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, to draft policy proposals to unite the party.
...
On his first day in office, he followed through on several of those pledges. He halted construction of Trump’s border wall, reversed the travel ban on several Muslim-majority countries and ended the Remain in Mexico policy. He also sent Congress an immigration proposal, seen as a Democratic wishlist, including a path to citizenship for the roughly 11 million immigrants who were living in the U.S. illegally when Biden took office.
But there was never a concerted effort to push the bill through the then-Democrat-controlled Congress, as the administration did with other bills that Biden eventually signed into law, such as the bipartisan infrastructure bill.
...
But with mounting political pressure, Biden has reiterated to advisers that his main priority is to see migration plummet and has signed off on certain measures used by Trump, implementing a version of his predecessor’s asylum rule that would make migrants who move through another country on the way and don’t first apply for asylum in that country ineligible for asylum in the U.S.
...
The administration has all but shut down work on several of the campaign ideas Biden laid out, such as finding ways to allow undocumented immigrants who have lived in the U.S. for decades ways to work legally. Officials say the only ideas that are considered now are ones pitched at reducing migrant flows to the border.
“Democrats run away from the immigration issue as soon as things get difficult,” said Marielena Hincapié, a longtime immigration advocate who worked on immigration policy for Biden’s 2020 campaign. “Biden immediately went into reaction mode. Republicans do the complete opposite: They lean in.”

Spanish-language Univision is becoming more MAGA-friendly despite Donald Trump's histrionic talk of vermin, concentration camps, and how immigrants are "poisoning the blood of our country".
The famous Trump Univision interview by Enrique Acevedo has some interesting backstory.
During the hour-long interview, Acevedo allowed the former president — who as recently as 2020 called Univision “a leftist propaganda machine” — to openly pander to Latinos' “entrepreneurial” spirit, and to threaten his political opponents by insinuating he would weaponize the Department of Justice against them if he is re-elected.  This interview adds to concerns that the Spanish-language news giant – which in 2016 cut business ties with Trump and his Miss USA beauty pageant after his racist remarks against Mexicans – is shifting its stance on the former president. The Washington Post reported that “Trump is treating Univision and its new corporate owners like long-lost friends. He hosted a trio of its executives at Mar-a-Lago last week during an hour-long Univision interview that was notable for its gracious tone.”  The report also indicated that TelevisaUnivision Mexico co-CEO Bernardo Gomez Martinez, who has a “long working relationship” with Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, was responsible for facilitating the sit-down.
Yep, you may have thought Jared had moved on from his working relationship with El Douché but he's still pulling strings for Trump.
[I]n the days that followed Trump’s interview with Acevedo, some network pundits made the case that Trump has “softened” on immigration in an effort “to repair his relationship” with Latinos – flying in the face of the network’s own reporting about his explicitly stated policies and stance on the issue. In the days that followed Trump’s interview, Univision regional and national prime-time shows like Al Punto California, Noticiero Univision, and Linea de Fuego have hosted numerous conservative pundits, including former personalities from Americano Media — the Trump-aligned Spanish-language network that ran out of money earlier this year — to defend the former president and argue that he is aiming for “a change in strategy” on Latinos and immigration.
Either those Univision pundits are living in an alternative reality or word came down from the patrón to go easy on El Douché.
Of course Univision's blatant pandering to a virulent racist and hatemonger is not going unchallenged.
Latino backlash grows over Donald Trump’s friendly Univision interview
The nation’s largest Spanish-language media company, Univision, faced growing backlash Friday for its handling of a recent interview with former president Donald Trump, as major Latino advocacy groups delivered a letter of protest to the network’s executives and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus prepared to request a meeting with the network. Actor and comedian John Leguizamo, who recently took a turn as host of Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” also posted a video on Instagram on Thursday night calling for a boycott of the network until it stopped its rejection of Biden ads, some of which were canceled just before the Trump interview aired. “I am asking all my brothers and sisters who are actors, artists, politicians, activists to not go on Univision,” he said in a message in English and Spanish. [ ... ] Joaquin Blaya, a former president of Univision who created its signature news show in the late 1980s, told The Washington Post in an interview this week that he worried the network had moved away from its founding mission. [ ... ] The Mexican media company Grupo Televisa, which has long had a close relationship with political power brokers in that country, recently merged with the owners of Univision to take joint control of the company. “This was Mexican-style news coverage, a repudiation of the concept of separation of business and news,” Blaya said of the Trump interview. “What I saw there was batting practice, someone dropping balls for him to hit out of the park. I think it was an embarrassment.”
What Trump tells MAGA-friendly interviewers from Univision is not what he is telling everybody else. And that interview was heavily edited to make him seem less unpalatable to the audience.
This is the same Trump who called Mexicans "drug dealers", "criminals", and "rapists" and never apologized for his insults nor took them back.
The View conducted a good journalistic dissection of the way the Univision interview took place.

personal bug a bear as someone who works around politics a lot.
I saw the other day the revival of the Latino Jewish Congressional Caucus, which you know is great and all, but there's still no Jewish Congressional Caucus. There's the famous Congressional Black Caucus, the Hispanic Caucus, and the Democratic Women's Caucus (which only let in members of congress from those groups) The Native American Caucus, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, Congressional Equality Caucus (which let in supporters as well as members of the minority) there's a Latino Jewish Congressional Caucus and a Black-Jewish Relations Caucus, but no Jewish one, no antisemitism, Jewish interest, Caucus, there's a Caucus for cut flowers, but no Jewish Caucus.... We are by my understanding THE ONLY American minority group that doesn't have its own Caucus in Congress advocating our issues
this goes past this, having worked in left wing politics there are a SEA of organizations that recruit, train, and support people from specific backgrounds and groups. EMILY's List, and Emerge for women, Vote Mama for moms, LGBTQ Victory Fund for Queer people, Latino Victory Fund for hispanic people, Higher Heights for black women, VoteVet for veterans, I can go on and on here, but the point I'm making is, in all my years I've never heard of, seen, etc an organization thats doing left wing or non-partisan for Jewish candidates.
only in the past few years with APAC and DMFI have groups started endorsing/supporting pro-Israel candidates and while thats lovely A) it doesn't do anything on the state and local level, just the other day a number of NYC council members voted against a "End Jew Hatred Day" and they represented such Jewish strongholds like, Park Slope, Crown Heights, and Boro Park, B) APAC and DMFI don't care about electing Jews as such, just pro-Israel candidates of every race and background, which is great but also not the same and C) Israel is important but not the only thing
any ways very frustrating, it feels like we're very often scared to organize, to build Jewish strength out of fear of being accused of being powerful, so we decide to be weak to not have a stereotype
I never consciously realized there wasn't a Congressional Jewish Caucus, and now that you mention it, its absence does seem dispiriting and strange. This article suggests this was originally a good thing as it meant Jews were successfully integrating and largely avoiding direct threats, but that that time may be past. In early 2022, some far-right Christian Republicans started a "Caucus for Torah Values," which has zero Jewish members of course.
The NY Council vote was nauseating, and of course the tokenist pickme's at JFREJ stood up to applaud them.
There's no shortage of Jewish political organizing, publishing, and philanthropy - if anything, sometimes it can seem like there's too much, like instead of rallying around 2 or 3 successful initiatives and publications everybody wants to start their own and they wind up being largely redundant. But for the purposes of standing eye-to-eye with Congressional advocacy groups, yes, we have let a key opportunity slip by.

Even as SCOTUS is about to gut Roe v. Wade, Nancy Pelosi is now in Texas campaigning for a conservative, anti-abortion man over a young, pro-abortion woman who is a pro-immigration lawyer:
Rep. Henry Cuellar, a longtime Democratic congressman from Texas’ 28th Congressional District, won a plurality of support in the March primary over Jessica Cisneros, a progressive 28-year-old immigration lawyer, whom Cuellar narrowly defeated in 2020. They’ll face each other in a runoff election on May 24 to decide the Democratic nominee, which Democrats view as key to their slim chances of maintaining a House majority next year.
The conservative Cuellar is avowedly anti-choice, one of the few Democrats left in the House who fits that description. Last year, he was the only House Democrat to vote against the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would protect abortion access as a matter of federal law and was passed after Texas banned abortion after six weeks.
Cuellar has been endorsed by top House Democrats including Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, as well as the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, whose campaign arm funded attacks on Cisneros in 2020. Pelosi’s political action committee gave Cuellar $4,000 in December, according to FEC records.
Cisneros, on the other hand, is vehemently pro-choice, and has been endorsed by reproductive rights advocacy groups such as NARAL and EMILY’s List, as well as progressive politicians such as Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Cisneros slammed Cuellar after his vote last year.
“Once again, Henry Cuellar has refused to stand up for South Texans’ reproductive freedom and the constitutional right to abortion care,” Cisneros said in a statement to the Texas Tribune. “Even after our state’s Republican leaders just passed the country’s most extreme ban—ending almost all abortion access in Texas with no exceptions after 6 weeks—our Congressman refuses to defend us and our reproductive rights.”

In a Texas Democratic primary between an anti-abortion Democrat whose home and office were raided by the FBI and a young, progressive, pro-choice woman, top House Democrats—including Speaker Nancy Pelosi—are going with the former.
Even after it became clear this week that the Supreme Court is apparently planning to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Rep. Henry Cuellar, a longtime Democratic congressman from Texas’ 28th Congressional District, won a plurality of support in the March primary over Jessica Cisneros, a progressive 28-year-old immigration lawyer whom Cuellar narrowly defeated in 2020.
“It’s called conscience: I am a Catholic, and I do believe in right to life, and it’s just a conscience,” Cuellar told reporters in October. “Sometimes people vote because of [politics], they think just because [it’s a] Democratic or Republican issue, for me it’s just a matter of conscience.”
Cuellar has also been plagued by questions about his integrity. In January, the FBI raided his home and office in connection with an investigation into ties between Azerbaijan and U.S. companies and groups. Records related to Cuellar and his wife were subpoenaed, ABC News reported in January, but his lawyer told Fox News last month that Cuellar is not the target of the investigation.
But even with the FBI raid and his almost total opposition to abortion rights, Cuellar is continuing to receive enthusiastic support from the House Democratic leadership. Clyburn, the third-ranking House Democrat, who wields major influence in national Democratic politics, is set to campaign for Cuellar in a get-out-the-vote event on Wednesday in San Antonio.
Tumblr media
Reached for comment Tuesday, a Clyburn spokesperson told VICE News that Clyburn is “still planning to be with Rep. Cuellar tomorrow.”
Pelosi, who campaigned for Cuellar in the final days of the 2020 primary, reaffirmed her support for the Texas congressman in March after Cisneros forced Cuellar to a runoff.
“I support my incumbents,” Pelosi said during a press conference in Austin on the anniversary of the Affordable Care Act’s passage. “I support every one of them, from right to left. That is what I do.” (Pelosi’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from VICE News on Tuesday.)
Pelosi’s majority is likely to narrow even before November, when polls show the Democrats are likely to lose control of Congress. On Tuesday, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul picked U.S. Rep. Antonio Delgado as her Lieutenant Governor, meaning two Democratic seats will be vacant. Another, in a district neighboring Cuellar’s in Texas, could potentially flip to the GOP.
Though the abortion bill Cuellar voted against ultimately passed the House, it failed to advance in the Senate in February because some Senate Democrats refused to break the filibuster. (In the leaked draft of his opinion, Justice Samuel Alito wrote that the court should “heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”)
But in the wake of the leak of the draft opinion, Democrats-despite holding both chambers of Congress and the presidency right now-are pitching their majorities as the only way to protect abortion access.
“It’s not about filibuster, size of the Court, or what the Senate hasn’t passed. It’s about Republicans, not us,” Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, the chair of the House Democrats’ campaign arm, tweeted Tuesday. “We can save our freedoms. But, it’s November, stupid.”
Tumblr media
President Joe Biden echoed this sentiment ina statement on the leak.
"If the Court does overturn Roe, it will fall on our nation's elected officials at all levels of government to protect a woman's right to choose," said Biden, who supported a constitutional amendment overturning Roe v. Wade early in his career and repeatedly voted to ban federal funding for abortions before reversing his position as president.
"And it will fall on voters to elect pro-choice officials in November."

Republicans are calling out Democrats for their hypocrisy within their diversity, equity, and inclusion agenda, as California Democrats ban Hispanic Republicans from joining the state's Latino Legislative Caucus.
The midterms yielded a record number of Latino lawmakers elected to the state legislature, but that didn't change the generations-long trend of excluding GOP lawmakers from the minority-based caucus.
California State Sen. Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh (R) and California State Assemblywoman Kate Sanchez (R) both spoke out against the exclusion, calling out their Democratic colleagues for the double standard.
REPUBLICANS MAKE HUGE GAINS AMONG BLACK AND LATINO VOTERS AS DEMS FEAR ‘PARADIGM-SHIFT': POLL
"When you have a diverse group of people qualifying and ever advocating and having the discussions on any issue, you bring more balanced policy," Ochoa Bogh told Pete Hegseth on "Hannity" Tuesday night. "So I think… at the bottom of it all, it's just it has to do with fear, at least now, but I think it's a great opportunity right now to reassess where we are as a state and reassess where the Latino caucus is in California."
According to The Sacramento Bee, the caucus was created five decades ago, and Republicans have always been barred from joining.
The Bee reported even as Ochoa Bogh was elected as the first "Republican Latina senator in state history," there were no exceptions for her to the generations-long rule.
Sanchez said she was "surprised" at first that she was not allowed to partake in the caucus, but then quickly noted the "hypocritical" nature of the policy as far-left Democrats continue the diversity, equity, and inclusion campaign.
REPUBLICANS ARE WINNING THE LATINO VOTE BECAUSE THE FUTURE IS ON THE BALLOT
Despite being excluded, Sanchez noted it will not hinder her efforts to represent everyone in her district, regardless of partisanship.
"My colleagues and I have discussed at length we are focused on delivering for the district," Sanchez said. "That means we work on inflation… We work on education, making sure that children receive quality education no matter their zip code, and then we work on making our communities safer."
They didn't ask if I was a Latino Republican or a Democrat," she continued. "They wanted us to deliver results. They wanted to know we would fight for them."
But this issue isn't exclusive to California.
And it's not happening just at the state level, either.
Florida Rep. Byron Donalds (R) has also been excluded from the Black congressional caucus at the federal level.
"So much for DEI, diversity, equity and inclusion. It's their favorite thing, except when it applies to people that don't agree with them," said Hegseth.
Fox News contributor Deroy Murdock argued the ban could come in an effort to preserve the party's reach, despite claiming it advocates for "Black progress."
"I think you could have 25 Black Republicans in the Congressional Black Caucus and still try to keep them out because they're not really about Black progress, they're about the advancement of big government liberalism, big government socialism, and the preservation of the Democrat Party's political power," Murdock said.
"It's less about celebrating Black achievement than maintaining the ongoing power of the Democrat Party," he continued. "That's really what they're all about, and having a bunch of Republicans in the room does not that doesn't help that objective at all."
