FUN RANDOM HORSE BREED TIME
Super small lil horse breed known as the Banker Horse is a semi-feral/feral horse breed that lives on the barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina!
Tumblr media
They're not considered to be indigenous but are protected and managed by the National Park Service and currently the estimated population of these horses is 400.
Tumblr media
They share ancestry with other Colonial Spanish horse breeds, and genetic markers indicate the share a common ancestory with both the Paso Fino and the Pryor Mountain Mustang.
While there isn't a specific source of these horses, the biggest theories is that they swam to shore when ships wrecked in the nearby shoals, in a region known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" due to how many ships its claimed.
Tumblr media
The Foundation for Shackleford Horses has set up a studbook for establishing the Banker horse as its own horse breed. It is registered as a critically endangered breed with the American Livestock Breeds Conversancy.
If you wanna help with the conservation of these cool guys, feel free to check out the link below!

If the netherlands has friesians, America has mustangs, and Saudi Arabia has arabians, what breeds come from sweden?
There are a few to pick from so I'll just list them here and I've included some of my own photos of each breed so you can get a better idea of their characteristics. There are no "historical" pictures included, so this is a bit of a departure from what I normally do so I hope people don't mind.
Svensk Varmblod (SWB)
Sweden has the Swedish warmblood which has been very successful in showjumping, dressage, eventing, and even driving. As of 2018 it is the most common horse breed in Sweden followed by Icelandic horses and then warmblooded trotters (two non-native breeds). In 2018, of the top two highest ranking show jumping horse and rider duos, both horses were Swedish Warmbloods (Hanson WL and Albfuehren’s Bianca). The examples below are of two Swedish Warmbloods in more commonplace use as all round riding horses.

Nordsvensk Brukshäst and Kallblodstravare
The North Swedish Horse (Nordsvensk) is a native breed of heavy horse. It is still popular for riding, driving and farm work. Lighter lines within the breed are bred for harness racing and are registered in the stud-book of Svensk Kallblodstravare, that is to say Swedish Coldblood Trotter. This split happened in 1964, creating a heavier working-type and a lighter trotting horse. The Swedish, Norwegian and Finnish cold blood trotters are the only ones that exist in the world. One of the most famous Swedish Coldblood Trotters is probably Järvsöfaks. He holds the current world record for Coldbloods in wins, consecutive wins (42), and the coldblood trotter world record time, 1:17.9 per kilometer. The photos bellow are of the heavier type (Nordsvensk Brukshäst).

Svensk Ardenner
The Swedish Ardennes is it's own breed and the result of crossing the imported Ardennes horses to the Nordsvensk. The breed was developed in the late 19th century in response to demands within agriculture. They are a medium-sized draught horse breed that are still used in areas inaccessible to machinery to haul timber.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gotlands Russ
The Gotlands Russ is an old breed of Swedish pony. Feral horses on Gotland have been documented since the 13th century, but in the mid 19th century settlers caused their numbers to decline and despite a breeding centre being founded in 1880 there was only 14 left in 1922. In the process of rehabilitating the breed two Welsh stallions were used. The stud-book has been closed to outside blood since 1971. They are good all round ponies that are often used for harness racing.

The Ardennes Draft Horse or Ardennais is considered one of the oldest breeds of draft horse.
Their history reaches back to Ancient Rome. The Ardennes breed could be a direct descendant of the prehistoric Solutré horse.
It is claimed to be descended from the type of horse described by Julius Caesar in his Commentarii de Bello Gallico.
Caesar described these horses of Belgium as "rustic, hard and tireless." He recommended them for use in heavy cavalry units.
The early type was used by many later Roman emperors for military applications.
The breed's ancestors are thought to have been bred for 2,000 years on the Ardennes plains. It is one of the oldest documented European heavy draft breeds.
They weigh 700 to 1,000 kilograms (1,500 to 2,200 lbs).

Top Horse Breeds for Beginner Riders and Owners
While there isn't a horse breed that is ideal for novice riders and owners, certain breeds are more suited than others due to certain characteristics. Safety should always be your top priority. The horse's attitude and previous experience level should be taken into consideration more than pedigree when selecting a beginner's horse. American paint horses and Morgans are two popular breeds that are good for beginning riders since they are both easy to train and highly responsive. Read More...

Free horses of Apuseni
The “free horses” are not a wild breed, but local horses who are let loose during the summer. During the cold season, the owners retrieve their horses (they find them easily as the horses never wander far). The horses belong to a mountain breed, have a solid build and can withstand prolonged effort. “Free horses” can be seen in several parts of Romania.

The Friesian Horse

1. A photograph of "Sneek 500 jaar. Wedstrijd ringrijden" from 1956, and by Wim van Rossem.
2. A photograph of "Circus Strassburger. Regina Strassburger hogeschool dressuur" from 1948, and by J. D. Noske (1902-1972).
3. Friese hengsten (c. 1954) by Kuno Brinks (1908-1992).
4. Een Fries paard by Tethart Philipp Christian Haag (1737-1812). Fries paard is the Dutch name for Friesian horses.
5. Paard uit Friesland Phryso (in English: Horse from Friesland Phryso) from c. 1578 - 1583 and attributed to Hendrick Goltzius, after a design by Jan van der Straet. Even though not referred to as a Friesian this is a horse from Friesland - the Dutch province that Friesians orginated in - that shows the same features and likely gives a sense of the breeds earlier origins and appearance.

Tell us about horses! What is your favourite breed?
Ooohh hard question. There are many I love so I'll just make a list, shall I ?
First, this is not my fave breed but my own horse is a french trotter, and while they are primarily race horses they are actually very sturdy, calm and friendly horses you can do whatever you want with and I would not exchange him for anything else even if he's an opinionated bastard lol
Here he is yesterday IN PRISON (separated him to give him food and treat some minor wounds and he was NOT HAPPY)
Tumblr media
Then. Other breeds. I have a very soft spot for rustic breeds, the ones who live outside all year and can face anything and are just sturdy little bastards so like. All my kid years I just wanted a mustang, you know (damn now my phone is capitalising the word automatically I wonder why 🙃). They're just awesome! And wild! They have the perfect build and all these cool colours and for someone like me who's more than primarily an outside/trail rider they'd be perfect! But I don't live in the USA so uuuh
(I stop you right here I was too old and already obsessed about horses for too long for the Spirit movie to have had any impact on this. I was born this way lol)
Soooo if I'm french, what do I have ?
The Camargue is a fun little one
Tumblr media
They live in the Camargue swamps among the flamingos. Can forget the cool colours though they're all grey. I've ridden a few of them and they're really nice horses. A little on the small side for me but eh. Oh and they're a work breed. They're used to farm the local cows.
I've also ridden a couple of merens, another french breed, which were reaaaaally nice. Very chill horses.
Tumblr media
Yeah. They're all black. That's the constant in rustic breeds usually. (Incidentally why I love mustangs so much because they have all I love PLUS the fancy colours I mean YES).
I also have a soft spot for haflingers because I learnt to ride on them (galloping freely in my local mountains. You bet I don't know how to ride in an arena.) You guessed it, they all look like that. This is not a french breed, they are from Tyrol, in Austria. They're also considered ponies sometimes.
Tumblr media
Finally and if I'm talking about cool looking sturdy rustic horses... I love an Arab or an Arab-Barb.
Yeah I know. But like. Actual real Arabians can be so chill? They can live outside all year too, they have the sturdiest feet, they have the brains. I've ridden an Arabian stallion that was SO CHILL and nice. I also know a friend whose Arabian mare would scare itself to death when it farted - those are not mutually exclusive lol. Mind you I hate American style Arabs or Egyptian Arabs - they way their head is shaped is way too extreme for me and I do think it's probably not especially good for them.
Tumblr media
Bonus :
I've never seen one IRL but I LOVE the Marwari (Indian breed). I don't know about their temperament but they have a great built, cool colours AND THOSE EARS !!! 🥰 Cuties

Thank you for asking !!!! 😊❤️

Norman cob
Norman cobs are mid-sized horses with conformation of a robust Thoroughbred - they have a square overall profile and a short strong back. The head is well-proportioned, with small ears and a straight or convex facial profile. These horses have thick and muscular necks, deep chests, pronounced withers and broad shoulders and strong hindquarters (not as much as in other draft breeds, though). The legs are short and strong, with a thick bone. Traditionally, the tail was docked, until 1996, when the practice became illegal in France. Norman cobs have a lively trot with long strides, which was achieved via selective breeding. Norman cobs stand between 155-168 cm.
Tumblr media
Now something about coat colors. Norman cobs are usually chestnut or bay, or seal brown (in the breed registry, it's called black pangaré, however, genetically, these animals are brown, not with pangaré markings). Bay with white markings are the most popular.
Tumblr media
Norman cobs come from the Normandy region in France. Their ancestors were small horses that lived in Normandy - bidets. These were bred by Romans to draft mares to produce war horses good both for pulling and riding. Over the centuries, blood of other breeds was added - Arabians and Barbs, but also Gelderlands, Norfolk trotters and others. Because of Thoroughbred ancestry, Norman cobs are energic and athletic and they mature sooner than other draft horses. In the 18th century, there were two studs founded - Le Pin and Saint Lo.
Tumblr media
This multi-purpose breed is calm, willing and hardworking, and very durable. Cobs show great endurance when ridden and are very hardy. They can be used for most equestrian disciplines and they are particularly well-suited for vaulting.

Amazing giant horse breeds that exist !!
Russian traction horse: But in fact, this breed, arose only a century ago when the Russian breeders began to cross breed, with larger specimens despite its menacing appearance and huge size.
Belgian traction horse or brabançon: This is the Belgian traction horse, a distant relative of the Russian traction horse.
Percheron breed: Just take a look at this elegant coat, you can immediately see that it is French, this is a Percheron, a French traction horse. It was considered as a perfect horse, to carry a knight in heavy armor. They could Virtually handle any agricultural load, and at the same time work at a good speed.
Yakutian horse, this is probably the hard-lasting pull horse: The height of this horse is modest, no more than hundred and forty centimeters, almost like a pony, and its average weight is no more than half a ton. Perhaps, the yakutian horse is inferior in power, when compared with some of his relatives that we saw today.
