The Life of The Prophet Muhammad(pbuh): Before His Birth, His Birth and His Childhood
The Famous Grandfathers of the Prophet
Undoubtedly, we do not have much knowledge on all the ancestors who carried the Master of the Universe’s light as a Divine trust on their foreheads. The ancestors about whom we have the most knowledge are the ones who are closest in time. Here we will take a short glance at their lives and personalities.
Qusai
Qusai, the fourth grandfatherof the Holy Prophet and whose real name was Zayd, was a very important figure. He had only one male sibling by the name of Zuhra.
From these two siblings, Qusai was granted the honor of bearing the noor that came down from Hazrat Adam. From childhood, Qusai garnered much attention for his talents and grew up to be one of the leading figures of Mecca. In a short time, he gained much reliability amongst the people of Mecca for his fair decisions as well as his skills in governance and administration. For this reason, the governance of Mecca was given to him.  He divided Mecca into districts for the first time. He situated every tribe into the district that he allocated for them. The most important decisions of Mecca were discussed and decided in his home.  Important tasks such as safeguarding the Ka’aba, providing water for and hosting the pilgrims of Hajj, erecting the flag at times of war, and governing the Meccan assembly, were entrusted in him. The first house that was across from the Ka’aba and whose door faced the Ka’aba was specially constructed for Qusai. This house was a parliament, like a type of governmental building or the state of the Meccan city, where all sorts of works and issues were discussed. Historically, Qusai’s residency was known as “Daru’n-Nadwa” and it found fame with this name. It was conserved until half a century after the Hijra (migration).
Qusai was loved and respected by everyone without exception. The noor belonging to the Master of the Universe that he carried on his forehead, made him beloved to and the bosom friend of the Meccan people.
In accordance with the custom, Qusay handed over the role of the family chieftain to his oldest son, Abduddar when he got old and said, “My Beloved son, I appoint you as the chief of this tribe”.
However, Abduddar did not possess the skills to undertake such a great duty. Throughout his life he was unable to fill his father’s place because the noor of the Patron of the Universe was not shining on his forehead, but was on his younger brother’s, Abd Manaf who had four sons: Hashim, Abdusshams, Muttalib, and Nawfal.
Hashim
Hashim is the grandfather of the Holy Prophet from the second generation.
Hashim was a tradesman; he was one of the notables of Mecca’s gentry. As the birth date of the Holy Prophet was nearing, the noor of the Holy Prophet on his forehead was shining even brighter. In addition, he had eminent virtues.
He was extremely generous. During a year of drought, no bread could be found. He had snow-white bread made from the pure wheat he brought from Damascus, cut several camels and sheep, and offered a huge feast composed of bread, meat, gravy, and broth to the whole of Meccan people.
Because Hashim was of high moral character, aptitude, was wise, generous, virtuous, was loved and respected by everyone, and had a noble personality, his name became the title for his family and posterity. For this reason, they termed this great lineage that includes our master of the Universe as the “Hashemites”.
Hashim had four sons: Shaiba (Abdulmuttalib), Asad, Abu Sayfi, and Nadla.
Hashim’s progeny continued from his sons Shaiba and Asad. Shaiba is the Holy Prophet’s grandfather from the first generation whereas Asad is the uncle of Hazrati Ali’s mother, Fatimah.
However, when Hunain, who came from Asad’s progeny, did not have any descendants; every Hashemite was descended from Abdulmuttalib’s branch, proliferated, and spread across the Earth.
Shaiba (Abdulmuttalib)
Shaiba is the Holy Prophet’s grandfather from the first generation. Since he was born with white hair, the name “Shaiba” was given to him; he gained fame with his nickname, Abdulmuttalib and was mentioned more by this name.
The story of how he was given this nickname:
Shaiba stayed with his maternal uncles in Medina during his childhood. One day he and his neighborhood friends were throwing arrows with the other children in a public square in Medina. Amongst all the children, he was easily distinguished by the noor belonging to the Master of the Universe that shone on his forehead. There, a crowd of grownups gathered to watch the children compete.
It was Shaiba’s turn to throw an arrow. He placed the arrow in the bow and stretched the bow in a confident manner. For a moment, he stopped breathing and unleashed the bow. The arrow that sprung from the bow hit its exact aim. When everyone looked at him with amazement, he brought the following words to his tongue through the happiness and excitement that he felt with this success:
“I am Hashim’s son. I am Sir Betha’s son. Of course my arrow will find its target”.
The adults that came to watch heard Shaiba’s commendatory words. One of Harith bin Abd-Manaf sons came close to him and learnt that he was Hashim’s sons by cross-examining. On his return to Mecca, this man explained the situation to Muttalib and remarked that it was not right for such a talented and intelligent child to be left in a foreign province.
Upon hearing this news, Muttalib immediately went to Medina and brought Shaiba to Mecca. As Muttalib was arriving to Mecca with Shaiba on the back of his saddle, they asked:
“Who is this child?”
Muttalib was afraid that this child would be affected with the evil eye so the words “my slave” came out of his mouth.
When he arrived home, his wife, Khadija, asked the same question. Once more, the answer was “my slave”.
The next day Shaiba began to roam the streets of Mecca with the new and beautiful clothes that his uncle bought for him. Everyone became curious about his identity and began to ask questions. Those who knew answered, “Abdulmuttalib” (Abdulmuttalib’s slave).
Despite his identity being later revealed, his nickname remained “Abdul-Muttalib” from that day on.

“People compare what happened to Romanovs to a lot of other royal families but I haven’t seen them compare it to the most similar story of what happened to the royal family of Iraq and the palace massacre except in both stories the some distant cousins of the royal family with royal titles survived except the difference is one of the daughters of the king of Iraq at the time actually survived unlike Anastasia of Russia who has been proven to have died with the family. Interestingly enough people barely talk about how the royal family of Iraq were also apart of the house of Hashemite and back then Iraq was called “The Hashemite kingdom of Iraq”, the Hashemites had a lot of power for centuries they had ancestors who ruled different countries.” - Submitted by Anonymous

Queen Rania of Jordan celebrates her 53rd birthday on 31 August 2023
The Royal Court has released two new portraits of Queen Rania for the happy occasion.
The past year featured a number of joyous occasions for the Hashemites: the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein, the wedding of Princess Iman, the university graduation of Princess Salma, and the high school graduation of Prince Hashem.
In the days and weeks preceding their children’s weddings, Their Majesties were eager to share their happiness with their country’s people, involving the Jordanian public in the various celebrations marking the marriages of their first-born son and eldest daughter.
Her Majesty hosted a Henna party for Princess Iman, as well as a dinner party held in honor of the Crown Prince’s wife, Princess Rajwa, where the Queen and members of the royal family were joined by women from across Jordan’s 12 governorates to celebrate the two happy occasions. Both events spotlighted the richness of Jordanian culture and included several folkloric musical and dance performances by local female artists.
Throughout the year, Queen Rania continued to follow up on issues of importance to the Jordanian public by carrying out a number of visits to charitable associations, home-based businesses, startups, and other organizations across the country’s cities, villages, and rural areas.
A celebrated advocate for women and youth, Her Majesty’s local engagements included meetings with women artisans and young entrepreneurs, as well as visits to a number of women-led initiatives and associations supporting women’s financial empowerment.
During the holy month of Ramadan last March, for the second consecutive year, the Queen organized a mission to Umrah – the lesser Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca – for 500 women from across Jordan, a group of whom the Queen joined to perform the sacred pilgrimage herself. Earlier, in December 2022, Her Majesty took part in the lighting of the Fuheis Christmas tree among members of Jordan’s Christian minority.
Alongside her work within Jordan, over the course of the year, Queen Rania participated in several distinguished global gatherings, and accompanied His Majesty on a number of regional and international working visits.
At the invitation of the Her Majesty Queen Camilla of the United Kingdom, Queen Rania attended a reception at Buckingham Palace in London aiming to raise awareness of violence against women and girls. She also met with U.S. First Lady Dr. Jill Biden at the White House while joining His Majesty and Crown Prince Al Hussein on a visit to Washington, D.C.
While in D.C., the Queen delivered the keynote speech at the 2023 National Prayer Breakfast (NPB) Gathering’s International Luncheon on Capitol Hill, where she affirmed that religion is not “a shelter for hiding,” but “a launch pad for living.” She also posited that, in the face of widespread polarization, the act of prayer can lead us towards a better, more nuanced path that she described as “the third way.”
“This third way is not the average of extremes, but rises above the binary, elevating us to higher ground that can become common ground as well,” she said. “Our win doesn’t need to be someone else’s loss. And being right doesn’t mean that the other side is wrong — only that we need other points of view to see a multi-dimensional picture.”
The Queen also spoke at the 2023 Web Summit in Lisbon, Portugal, where she underscored the potential pitfalls of humanity’s increased reliance on technology. “I am concerned that we’re undervaluing the most precious currency of all – our time,” Her Majesty said. “I am concerned that, even as virtual reality improves by the day, we’re neglecting the needs of our actual reality.”
In her capacity as a member of the Earthshot Prize Council, the Queen delivered remarks at the first-ever Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit, hosted in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. In her speech, Her Majesty called for mobilizing collective action and ingenuity to repair the planet, cautioning against claiming that “climate change is somebody else’s problem,” or leaving it for future generations to address.
This year, Queen Rania continued to use her global platform to advocate on behalf of refugees in Jordan and beyond. At the Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York, Her Majesty explained that a refugee crisis is “not just a short-term humanitarian crisis,” but rather a “crisis of human development” that requires long-term solutions focusing on growth, building resilience, sustainability, and job creation.
Additionally, the Queen repeatedly underscored disparities in the treatment of refugees based on their country of origin. Speaking at the Paris Peace Forum, she noted the difference in reception of refugees from Ukraine to those from countries such as Syria, Myanmar, and South Sudan, who had also been driven from their homes.
“What accounts for the contrast in compassion? Does skin color make all the difference?” she asked.
In May, Queen Rania attended the coronation ceremony of the King Charles III and Queen Camilla in London alongside King Abdullah. Their Majesties also attended the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II in September.

At times they are good and quiet company, the dead; they will not interrupt your musings, but when they speak, whether they be Jews or Turks or heathens, they will speak in a tongue all can understand. there are even countries where the moving, breathing people are less intelligible, dwell in a world further apart form you, than that silent population under the earth.
- Gertrude Bell, Persian Pictures (1894)
They buried her in Baghdad. This is the short sentence ending the biography of one of the most important women in recent Middle Eastern history. Gertrude Bell, "Queen of the Desert", as the film by Werner Herzog called her. Or "Mother of Iraq", as the inhabitants of the region between the Euphrates and the Tigris describe the woman who brought them both a blessing and a curse.
The search for her grave in the Iraqi capital is something akin to a small-scale odyssey. She is not buried at the British memorial cemetery in the heart of Baghdad in Bab al-Muadam. In this cemetry lie soldiers of his majesty, King George V of Great Britain. Most fell in 1917. A small mausoleum has been erected on the extensive site for Sir Frederick Stanley Maude. The General made a name for himself in the campaign on the Mesopotamian front during the First World War, as conqueror of Baghdad. Following the invasion of Iraq by British and American troops in 2003, the British named their headquarters in Baghdad's Green Zone "Maude House".
She’s not even buried in the Christian Armenian cemetery. When the woman that created Iraq died, on 12 July 1926 in her adoptive city of Baghdad in circumstances still unexplained to this day, she had already lost considerable influence.
A secret agreement between the governments of Britain and France had already decided on the allocation of the Ottoman spoils of war. But it would be another two years before the final demise of the Turkish Empire. Nevertheless, the new Middle Eastern order was a done deal and would from that moment bear the signature of Gertrude Bell.
Tumblr media
Initially an unofficial employee of the British secret service, and later as a political liaison officer ranked as a major and 'oriental secretary', she played a decisive role in the foundation of modern Iraq and was a close confidante of the Iraqi King Faisal I, who initially became King of Syria. When the French hounded him out, the British installed him in Baghdad on Bell's insistence.
Thereafter, the Hashemite King no longer needed Bell and the English also distanced themselves from a woman who was highly unusual for her time. This explains why she did not find her final resting place at the British memorial cemetery.
There was intense animosity between Gertrude Bell and Mark Sykes, one of the two leaders in the  negotiations to reach the secret agreement. He called her a "flat-chested, man-woman, globe-trotting, rump-wagging, blathering ass." She, meanwhile, accused him of huge incompetence.
This is because the agreement forged by Sykes together with his French counterpart Francois Georges-Picot was controversial at the time of its signing. Picot was the far more experienced partner in the negotiations and knew how to secure much more for France than expected. The agreement also contained serious contradictions. Whereas previously, Britain had pledged it would support the Arabs in the event of a revolt against the Ottoman Empire, and the prospect of recognising a subsequent Arab independence had been set out, France and Britain were now dividing up huge areas of the Arab territory between them and creating nations like Syria and Iraq.
Tumblr media
The Sykes-Picot agreement did however also contain, in the first paragraph, a reference that both France and Britain were willing to recognise and protect an independent Arab nation in the regions of the map marked with A and B. But within their spheres of influence, both countries retained privileges that would remain in place until the 1950s.
Gertrude Bell, who although employed in the service of the British, always lobbied for the interests of the Arabs, did not agree. Mark Sykes did not care. He was more interested in the fate of the Armenians, who had suffered under the pressure of the Ottoman Empire, than for the retention of the Arabs and the Kurds and threw his weight behind the emerging ambitions of the Jews for a territory in Palestine.
The development shows how bloody conflicts grew from these differing interests, and how these conflicts are now being exacerbated. The forcing together of the three ethnically and religiously diverse provinces of Mosul, Baghdad and Basra brought misfortune to Iraq. The kingdom was always unstable, and was toppled in a military putsch in 1958. The socialist Ba'ath Party seized power in 1968, and Saddam Hussein established his dictatorship in 1979. He held the nation together with what can only be described as archaic brutality.
Tumblr media
If you want to see the final resting place of Gertrude Bell you will have to find the small Anglican cemetery in the "Bab el-Sher Shi" neighbourhood on the eastern banks of the Tigris.
In the midst of mosques, churches, ministerial buildings, pot-holed streets and endless queues of cars, stands a stone sarcophagus with the inscription: Gertrude Margaret Lowthian Bell. A small bouquet of red and white plastic roses has been placed upon it.
Tumblr media
Asked about the significance of the dead woman to his country, an Iraqi friend says diplomatically: "There are good and bad sides to everyone." The same applied to Miss Bell. On the one hand she was responsible for the unfortunate border demarcation and the entity that is Iraq, which did not exist previously. But on the other, she was a perpetual champion of the cultural heritage of the nation and founded the Iraqi national museum. "She spoke our language, knew our clans, our customs and traditions,"
What she didn't know, my friend suggested, were the differences between Sunnis, Shias, Arabs and Kurds. "If she had, much of this could have been avoided."

It’s curious that the Afro-Eurasian “Old World” has a fair number of monarchies, but the “New World” has no local royalty, being made of either republics or sometimes having remnants of colonial-era ties to Old World royals, like Canada and Jamaica.
The most obvious explanation is that Old World states are older, and have some remnants of old-timey institutions: you might retain such institutions for the sake of continuity, but you wouldn’t go out of your way to create such institutions if you’re creating something new. It turns out that some Old World kingdoms are actually no older than the republics of the New World, though! Belgium was created in 1830. Jordan gained independence in 1946, after the Hashemites being enthroned by the British Mandate in 1921.The Netherlands’ monarchy was created in 1815 (following two centuries of a (nominal) Dutch Republic). Norway gained independence in 1905. You could also include the states that are currently republics, but were created as novel monarchies in the modern era like Greece (1832), or states that no longer exist like Yugoslavia (1918).
(You could also point to some other cases of relatively novel kingdoms like Germany (1871), Italy (1861), and Saudi Arabia (1932), but I think those are more examples of a royal house that was already well-established and powerful expanding and gaining new titles, rather than real “new kingdom! Uh, what random German princeling should we have as a king?” cases like Belgium or Greece.)
(There have been a few attempts at New World monarchies like the Mexican Empire and Empire of Haiti, but they’ve been fairly transient. The most successful, the Empire of Brazil, was a breakaway from the Portuguese monarchy.)
