They drew you! Pt.1
Characters: Klee, Diona and gn! reader
Fluff and maybe slight angst
———————————————————————————
Sorry for disappearance! And sorry for grammar errors! -Rey
———————————————————————————
Klee
Tumblr media
You (as a really kind soul) helping Jean, Albedo and Kaeya with babysitting Spark Knight.
You can understand that Jean is really busy and Albedo also busy, but for Kaeya you have some thoughts. Diluc once told you, that insted of sitting with Klee he was in Tavern.
Today was a busy day today, you helped Sara with meal delivery and you helped Noell with few heavy things. And the last thing you need to do is - take Klee from Albedos Dragon spine “office” back to Mondstadt.
You actually did that. You managed to get up on cold and dangerous mountain where Albedo set up his camp, how many times you asked why they dont fix this wooden bridge. And finally you found Klee and her Brother Albedo! What a relief.
- Yes!! Y\N you did it! Klee and brother Albedo started getting worried about you! I thought that you where fighting with Big Ice Monster!!
- Big Ice Monster?
-Khm, unluckily yes, I spotted Lawachurl on the way to my base but luckily for you he went different way after short time. - said Albedo
- Oh, Klee also want to give you a present, right Klee?
- Ah Yes! Hehehehee, here! Drawing of you Y/N! Brother Albedo helped me with your hair and eyes, cause Klee dont remember how they looked.
Helped with haird and eyes, so thats why he stared at you for few minutes.
Klee gave you a drawing. There was you, Klee, Albedo and who’s that? Oh thats Kaeya. You where holding hands with Albedo and Klee while Kaeya was holding Klees hand and in other hand he holding … a sword or a bottle…. Lets think that its a sword. Oh, and she havent forgot her best friend, Dodoko! And there is a big red heart above everyone. And when you looked on the other side of drawing there was a massage for you:
“Y/N! Thank you for playing with me and saving from Master Jean! You are the great hero for Klee, Klee is hoping that you will have more time with Klee because loves you!”
Oh wow, thats really sweet of her, you can stop smiling! You carefully put drawing inside your bag and hugged her!
- Awh, Klee that so sweet of you. And surely i can spent more time with you!
———————————————————————————
Diona
Tumblr media
You become really close friends with Diona. You 4 time a week visiting her in Cats Tail.
When you too met each other for the first time and you havent ordered an alcoholic drink but instead you ordered milkshake/juice/nonalcoholic coctail, that surprised her!
One time you walked her home after your and hers work. That was late night and rainy. You already falling asleep at your big, comfy bed with warm blanket you heard knock at your door. You sleepy went to open the door
-Uhh, whos there?
- Can you let me in? Its cold outside..
Wait what? Diona ? Ofc you opened door to her
- D-diona what are you-
- Hes drunk again! I can’t believe it!! - she angrily said and went to your house
-I need to destroy wine industry!! And why my dad not listening to me!? - her ears when down and her eyes become teary
- I just want to end this…
Thats it, can you adopt this kid please? Okay, think Y/N what can you do to make her happy? You dont have much to do, maybe drawing competition?
- Hey, wanna have a drawing competition? You can draw whatever you want and whos drawing going to be best wins!
-I- uh, you better be ready! Cause im already wining!! Hehe
And competition started. You noticed that she sometimes looks at you but you dont really care cause you trying to draw a horse. You never thought that horse are so hard to draw.
-Im done! Your not? Faster im curious!!
- hey, wait a little bit! I have only few things to end with!
- nope, its late already i have work tomorrow!!
- uh, okay okay.
You set against her and you both showed drawings at the same. You where pretty confident about your drawing but-
- Is that me?? WOW Diona, i never thought you can draw like that! Thats amazing!! - You took her drawing and slight blush appeared at your face. - I’ll save it
- What!? Thats just a drawing nothing special about it!! But thanks. - and she was blushing with small smile on her face
You knew that actually meant “Really thanks! I really appreciate it!! I tried hard!”
- And your horse is pretty good.
- hey! More emotions, I tried hard!
- pft haha
After few more conversations you both fall asleep. That was a nice evening.

so i did a reading challenge this year and i wanna talk about what i read
transcription under the cut
i did Popsugar 2019 and wanna talk about what i read:  Book Reccs and Anti-Reccs
1.) Becoming a Movie in 2019: Umbrella Academy (vol 1) by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba
4/5. A fascinating take on superpowers, dysfunctional families, and the apocalypse. Can get pretty gory, confusing here and there and you have to pay close attention to panels for lore, but overall an entertaining romp.
2.) Makes you Feel Nostalgic: Circles in the Stream by Rachel Roberts
4/5. Middle grade novel about the magic of music, belief, and of course, friendship. Definitely written for kids, and has some unfortunately clumsy Native rep, but overall an absolute joy to dive into once again.
3.) Written by a Musician: Umbrella Academy (vol 2) by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba
4/5. Ramps up the confusion to ridiculous degrees with some absolutely bonkers, unexplained arcs, but still fun to watch this dysfunctional family do its dysfunctional thing.
4.) You Think Should be Turned into a movie: All That Glitters by Rachel Roberts
4/5. Continuation of Circles in the Stream, but with more unicorns, more rainbows, and more fae, which makes it automatically even better than the first.
5.) With At Least 1 Mil. Ratings on Goodreads: 1984 by George Orwell
1/5. I understand why it's important and all but wasn't prepared for some of the more graphic scenes and the overall hopelessness of the message.  Would not recommend or read again.
6.) W/ a Plant in the title or cover: The secret of Dreadwillow carse by Brian farrey
5/5. A fantasy world where everyone is always happy, save for one girl and the princess, who set out to solve the mystery of their kingdom. Poignant and great for kids and adults.
7.) Reread of a favorite: Cry of the Wolf by Rachel Roberts
4/5. Yet another installment in the Avalon: Web of Magic series, which clearly I am obsessed with.  Please just read them.
8.) About a Hobby: Welcome to the Writer's Life by Paulette Perhach
5/5. A welcome kick in the pants, chock full of great advice told without condescension, and full of hope and inspiration for writers both new and old.
9.) Meant to read in 2018: The Poet x by Elizabeth Acevedo
4/5. Absolutely beautiful coming of age novel told in verse.  Do yourself a favor and listen to the audiobook version.
10.) w/ "pop," "sugar," or "challenge" in the title: Black Sugar by Miguel Bonnefoy
2/5. I think maybe I just don't understand this genre.  Or maybe the translation was weird. I was confused.
11.) w/ An Item of Clothing or Accessory on the cover: Our dreams at Dusk by Yuhki Kamatani
4/5. It had a lot more slurs/homophobia than I was prepared for, but otherwise is a very touching, relatable collection of queer characters living in a heteronormative world.
12.) Inspired by Mythology or Folklore: Ravenous by MarcyKate Connolly
3/5. A girl goes on an impossible quest to save her brother from a child-eating witch. Really wanted to like it more because I loved the first one, Monstrous, but it dragged a little.
13.) Published Posthumously: The Islands of Chaldea by Diana Wynne Jones
3/5. I adore Diana Wynne Jones, but this one was missing some of the magic of her other books. Not sure if it was because it had to be finished by someone else, or if I just grew out of her stories.
14.) Set in Space: Binti by Nnedi Okorafor
4/5. Powerfully written story of a girl straddling tradition and innovation, who wields power through mathematical magic, surviving on a spaceship alone with a dangerous alien occupation after everyone else has been killed.
15.) By 2 Female Authors: Burn for Burn by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian
2/5. Ostensibly a story about a revenge pact in a small island town, but leaves far too many dangling threads to attempt alluring you to the sequel.
16.) W/ A Title containing "salty," "bitter," "Sweet," or "Spicy": The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith
3/5. It's okay but I literally just never know what anyone means at any time. Are they being reticent on purpose or do i just not understand communication
17.) Set in scandinavia: Vinland Saga by Makoto Yukimura
2/5. Technically and historically accurate and well made, but the story itself is not my cup of tea.  Very gory.
18.) Takes Place in a Single Day: Long WAy Down by Jason Reynolds
4/5. A boy goes to avenge his murdered brother, but ghostly passengers join him on the elevator ride down. Stunning and powerful character-driven analysis.
19.) Debut Novel: Nimona by Noelle Stevenson
4/5. Charming and then surprisingly heart-breaking comic about Nimona, a shapeshifter who wants to become a villain's minion. Really love the villain/hero dynamic going on in the background, along with the dysfunctional found family.
20.) Published in 2019: The Book of Pride by Mason Funk
4/5. A collection of interviews with the movers, shakers, and pioneers of the queer and LGBTQ+ community.  An absolutely essential work for community members and allies alike.
21.) Featuring an extinct/imaginary creature: Phoebe and her Unicorn by Dana Simpson
4/5. Incredibly charming, Calvin and Hobbes-esque collection of comics featuring the adventures of Phoebe and her unicorn best friend.
22.) Recced by a celebrity you admire: The Emerald Circus by Jane Yolen
2/5. Recced by my fave author Brandon Sanderson. An unfortunately disappointing anthology proving that any story can be made uninteresting by telling the wrong section of it.
23.) With "Love" in the Title: Book Love by Debbie Tung
4/5. One of those relatable webcomics, only this one I felt super hard almost the entire time.  Books are awesome and libraries rule.
24.) Featuring an amateur detective: Nancy Drew: Palace of Wisdom by Kelly Thompson
4/5. REALLY love this modern take on Nancy Drew, coming back home to her roots to solve a brand new mystery. Diverse cast and lovely artwork, though definitely more adult.
25.) About a family: Amulet by Kabu Kibuishi
4/5. Excellent, top tier graphic novel about a sister and brother who have to go rescue their mother with a mysterious magic stone. LOVE that the mom gets to be involved in the adventure for once.
26.) by an author from asia, Africa, or s. America: Girls' Last tour by Tsukumizu
4/5. Somehow both light-hearted and melancholy. Two girls travel about an empty, post-apocalyptic world, and muse about life and their next meal.
27.) w/ a Zodiac or astrology term in title: Drawing down the moon by margot adler
3/5. A good starting place for anyone interested in the Neo Pagan movement, but didn't really give me what I was personally looking for.
28.) you see someone reading in a tv show or movie: The Promised NEverland by Kaiu Shirai
4/5. I don't watch TV or movies where people read books so i think reading an adaptation of a TV series after watching the series counts. Anyway it was good but beware racist caricatures
29.) A retelling of a classic: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy by Rey Terciero
5/5. We can stop the Little Women reboots and retellings now, this is the only one we need. In fact, we can toss out the original too, this is the only one necessary.
30.) w/ a question in the title: So I'm a spider, so what? by Asahiro Kakashi
4/5. Cute art despite the subject matter, and a surprisingly enthralling take on the isekai genre. Love the doubling down on the video game skills.
31.) Set in a college or university campus: Moonstruck (vol 2) by Grace Ellis
2/5. An incredibly cute, beautiful, and fascinating world of modern magic and creatures, but unfortunately falls apart at the plot and pacing.
32.) About someone with a superpower: Moonstruck (vol 1) by Grace Ellis
4/5. Though nearly as messy plot-wise as its sequel, the first volume is overwhelmingly charming in a way that overpowers the more confusing plot elements.
33.) told from multiple povs: The Long way to a Small, Angry Planet by becky Chambers
4/5. Told almost in a serial format, like watching a miniseries, a group of found-family spaceship crew members make the long journey to their biggest job ever.
34.) Includes a wedding: We Set the dark on fire by Tehlor kay mejia
4/5. Timely and poignant, a girl tumbles into both love and resistance after becoming one of two wives to one of the most powerful men in the country.
35.) by an author w/ alliterative name: The only harmless great Thing by brooke bolander
3/5. Much deeper than I can currently comprehend.  Beautifully written, but difficult to parse.
36.) A ghost story: Her body and other parties by Carmen Maria Machado
4/5.  It counts because one of the stories in it has ghosts. A sometimes difficult collection of surrealist, feminist, queer short stories.
37.) W/ a 2 word title: Good omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
4/5. Charming, touching, and comical, probably the best take on the apocalypse to date. Also excellent ruminations on religion and purpose.
38.) based on a true story: The faithful Spy by John Hendrix
4/5. Brilliantly crafted graphic biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and his assistance in fighting back against Nazi Germany.
39.) Revolving around a puzzle or game: the Crossover by Kwame alexander
4/5. The verse didn't always hit right with me, but the story is a sweet, melancholy one about family, loss, and moving on.
40.) previous popsugar prompt (animal in title): The last unicorn by peter s. Beagle
5/5. Absolutely one of my all-time favorite books, it manages to perfectly combine anachronism and comedy with lyricism, melancholy, and ethereal beauty.
41.) Cli-fi: Tokyo Mew Mew by Mia ikumi and Reiko Yoshida
4/5. Shut up it counts
42.) Choose-your-own-adventure: My Lady's choosing by Kitty curran
3/5. Cute in concept, a bit underwhelming in execution. Honestly, just play an otome.
43.) "Own Voices": Home by Nnedi Okorafor
3/5. The storytelling style was definitely not my style; while the first book was slow, too, it felt more purposeful. I found my attention wandering during this installment.
44.) During the season it's set in: Pumpkinheads by rainbow rowell
3/5. Cute art, but precious little substance.  The concept simply wasn't for me in the first place.
45.) LITRPG: My next life as a villainess: All routes lead to doom! by Hidaka nami
5/5. An absolute insta-fave! Charming art, endearing characters, an incredible premise, and so much sweet wholesome fluff it'll give you cavities.
46.) No chapters: The field guide to dumb birds of north america by matt kracht
3/5. It started out super strong, but the joke started to wear thin at a little past the halfway point.
47.) 2 books with the same title: Unfollow by Megan Phelps-Roger
4/5. A brave and enduring personal story of growing up in and eventually leaving the Westboro Baptist Church. Really called to me to act with grace and kindness even more in the future.
48.) 2 books with the same title: unfollow by rob williams and michael dowling
1/5. How many times do you think we can make Battle Royale again before someone notices
49.) That has inspired a common phrase or idiom: THe Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
4/5. Definitely good and deserves it's praise as something that pretty much revolutionized and created an entire demographic of literature.
50.) Set in an abbey, cloister, Monastery, convent, or vicarage: Murder at the vicarage by agatha christie
3/5. I just cannot. physically keep up with all of these characters or find the energy to read between the lines.
ok that's all i got, what did y'all read and like this year?  (oh god it’s gonna be 2020)

Grace Ellis: The Frederator Interview
Tumblr media
Grace Ellis is among the most exciting comic and TV writers working today, and all from coffee shops ‘round Columbus, Ohio. The first comic she created, Lumberjanes, is a NY Times bestselling series, in development as a movie, and brought her home Eisner and GLAAD awards for her cat to try to knock over. Grace is currently writing one of the most magical comics of the year, Moonstruck, but still found time to pen some awesome episodes of Bravest Warriors season 4 (after she determined that the gig was not, indeed, a prank). Grace and I sat down to talk log-doodling, queer representation in comics, and the commonalities between Beth Tezuka and Captain America.
Having written Lumberjanes: were you a Girl Scout yourself?
For a little, until my troop disbanded! Lumberjanes re-connected me with my Girl Scout roots. The inspiration for a lot of the woodsy stuff comes from an outdoor camp I was part of. After college I worked for Autostraddle, the biggest online network for queer women. They host a weeklong sleepaway camp every year called A-Camp. It has a bunch of panels, talent shows, activities - really cool stuff. When I was a camp counselor one year in Big Bear, I made friends with an attendee, Shannon Watters, who’s a writer and editor at Boom! Comics. Later, she approached me about making a comic together.
Wow! So Lumberjanes was your very first comic... ever?!
Yup! The first issue of Lumberjanes was the first comic I ever wrote.
Tumblr media
That’s amazing! Wait, backin’ up - what were you doing before?
My big kid job was journalism. I studied a mix of journalism, theater and women’s studies at Ohio State. After school ended I started pitching around and got a gig writing ads for Playbill. Then I got some work with Bustle too. I was doing sort of garbage writing: mostly TV recaps and some vaguely personal stuff here and there. Very little actual journalism. Then I got the job with Autostraddle when the site was still fairly new.
So you taught yourself both comic writing and screenwriting?
Pretty much! I was already familiar with story structure, so it was really about learning to adapt those elements to different formats, and take advantage of each medium. That comes with practice more than teaching. Every format is different. Like with comics, I go panel by panel, one at a time. I have to keep framing in mind while focusing on what’s happening in the scene, and what the characters are saying, because comics are super dialogue-driven. Writing comics is like trying to write the minimum in order to say the most.
How did Lumberjanes develop from the first ‘let’s make a comic!’ moment?
We drew a lot of inspiration from Ms. Kitty Fantastic and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I developed the concept with Shannon and we started from just rough outlines of the characters. Then Brooklyn A. Allen came on and designed them. And after that we brought on Noelle Stevenson as a second writer. Working all together was really smooth, a cut-and-dry process. We only needed one Skype call per issue!
Which girl in Lumberjanes are you the most like?
Molly - well, I’m always told to answer Molly! She’s the timid and unsure one. But hopefully Jo as well! I like to think that I can be a leader.
How did you come to write for Bravest Warriors?
Shannon submitted me! Benjamin (Townsend, Story Editor) reached out. I actually forwarded the email to my lawyer right away. I was sure that I was getting scammed. I was so excited when it turned out legit!
Tumblr media
(“Catbug! You don’t just bust in on someone when they're dukin’. Buddy... we talked about this.”)
Do you have a favorite character in Bravest?
Catbug is the most fun to write. Before pitching the Detective Catbug episode I wrote this season, I prepared by hanging out with a 5 year old. It actually helped! Catbug has the funniest voice, I just love writing him. But Beth is my favorite Bravest Warrior. Once I’d nailed down who she is, I really liked writing her. She kind of reminds me of Captain America: she’s unbeatable and refuses to stay down. And she’s unapologetically herself.
She truly is That Beth. How did you first start working on Moonstruck?
It actually started as a school exercise, with no plan to extend it! 2 years ago I was doing a program with Columbus College of Art & Design, where they partner their artists with pro comic writers. I was lucky enough to be accidentally (I later found out, secretly-totally-on-purpose) partnered with Shae Beagle. The assignment was to write a 5 page scene, with 2 twists; the first building off the second. That became the opening of Issue 1: the first twist is that we’re not in a normal human coffee shop - it’s full of mythological creatures. The second is that the girl we're following who seems totally normal… well, she doesn’t view herself as normal at all.
Tumblr media
I’ve wondered why Julie is so insecure, when she’s surrounded by such a diversity of mythological people?
For Julie, it’s really this fear of losing control. She’s has a deep sense that in her werewolf form, she’s not normal. She’s not right. So she’s internalized some really negative stuff about what that means for and about her.
Are there levels of privilege and marginalization in this world around being human or mythological?
Yes - I’ve been working on how to represent societal privilege surrounding mythological and non-mythological people. A big inciting factor in Julie’s story is her falling in love with a girl, who - spoiler alert! - is also a werewolf like she is. But Selena has a totally different perspective on who she is. She’s comfortable with herself.
Your characters are so distinct - what is your process for nailing a character’s voice?
It’s a lot of time thinking about who the character is; how they’d react to things, based on their personalities and what they’ve lived. Living close to a college is a big help because I’m surrounded by people around the age of the characters I write. Overhearing conversations is often inspirational! I also pull a lot from real life and my own friends. I have the best time writing over-enthusiastic characters: the ones that are high energy, always on, and oblivious.  Julie, on the other hand - it was tougher to find her voice. She’s so timid, yet she also has this sardonic edge. It helped when I realized that she would say “Sorry” all the time. It’s her instinct to apologize for herself, even when she has no reason to! After figuring out something like that, that’s core to her character, I was able to grow her voice from there.
Tumblr media
What do you find most challenging about writing? And most rewarding?
Being done is very rewarding! And feeling like you nailed it. The worst thing is when you don’t want to write. It’s easier now that it’s my job, because I have to do it. When I was an AV tech at a movie theater, I always wanted to write, but I wouldn’t do it. What’s tough is that I would rather think than write. Thinking is underrated. But the problem is, I know that I should write something - anything! - every single day.
Do you ever do any of your own art?
Nah, I’m not an artist. I draw sometimes. I’m a prolific log-drawer.
Logs?!
Yeah (laughs) I sometimes fixate on one thing and it becomes the only thing I doodle. Logs are that.
That is… oddly fitting! What is your creative process like?
It’s not very strict. My rule is that I leave my house every day before noon and go to a coffee shop. Then I just plug into it.
What do you like to do outside of writing?
Is there such a thing? Video games, especially during winter. Reading a lot of comics, plays and nonfiction. Biographies are great character studies. Currently, I’m reading a novel, The Blunderer by Patricia Highsmith. For writing pretty light and happy comics, I really do like books about heavy guilt and punishment...
Speaking of Patricia Highsmith - with her Price of Salt such a cornerstone in queer writing - what are your thoughts on representation and writing queer characters?
Oh yeah - we’re all familiar with the tropes. The sad stories, the coming out stories. They’re important in their way. But they aren’t what I need to write! I’m not a sad person, so I can’t just put that on. I write upbeat stories about characters who are already out and accepted. I’m a happy, out lesbian. So to represent those characters isn’t just what’s truthful to me - it also says to readers that hey, you can be a happy, out lesbian too!
Tumblr media
Do you think there is a market for young adult media with queer characters and themes that didn’t exist a decade ago?
Absolutely. It used to be that anytime a writer put a gay or lesbian character in anything - let alone a main character - they were pigeon-holed as a ‘queer writer’. And a decade ago, that could severely limit, or even ruin, a writer’s career. Now, ‘queer media’ isn’t just a subgenre - gay and lesbian representation is coming into the mainstream. It’s a changing world. Lumberjanes did so well, it uncovered a whole market of tween, teenage girls and queer women. And there hasn’t been enough made for them! Backstagers, Zodiac: Star Force - a lot of the new comics coming out are riding on a wave of realization for the comic companies. They figured out that they were leaving money on the table when it came to queer female audiences.
What’s your advice to people who want to write comics or TV shows?
Write a lot. Write every day, if you can. It’ll make you a better writer. And put stuff on the Internet. It sounds scary, but it’s the best way to get your work seen. At this point, people are getting jobs off of Twitter. Networking is BS!
What is your Dream, or dream gig?
My dream is to write things that I’m proud of in many different mediums. A musical. A video game. A movie. I’m a really big fan of form. It’s an almost intellectual interest: the different things each format brings to the table, and how you work with each to find the best possible way to tell a story.
What are some of your favorite Things?
I loved Saturday Morning Cartoons. Recess, The Weekenders. I like weird slice of life children’s stories. Calvin and Hobbes is a huge favorite. LA Noir is my favorite video game. And one of my favorite comic artists is Alison Bechdel. She does a strip called Dykes to Watch Out For that is absolutely hilarious. ❀

I really don’t have feelings about this one way or another. You will need to read a Wikipedia article to understand what is going on. You can skip this in all honesty, it doesn’t add to the main storyline at all. The art is nice though.

I wanted to like this. I had heard so many people say that they adore Terry Moore and was excited to read something by him, which makes this doubly disappointing. I’m used to far out, wacky, odd comic stories but this was just too much. I did not like this story at all and the art isn’t any better. In fact, you can tell when a different artist was drawing because they drew Xavin as female in some issues and male in others (pictured below.) This really ticked me off since they established in the last volume that Xavin mostly thinks and present themselves as female. The only thing you need to know about these volumes to read the reboot is Xavin leaves. Which was total bullshit and felt like it was done for the drama and not because story wise it makes sense or was time for that character to go. Ugh. So disappointing.

Unable to forget the lives and people they have lost, the Runaways confront another challenge in the form of a mysterious aircraft that crashes into their Malibu home, drawing the military and an ominous figure from their past, in a collection that includes Runaways Volume 3 Issues 11-14 and What If the Runaways Became the Young Avengers?

I HATED THIS VOLUME. They made them gritty and jettisoned a lot of their appeal. What little of the storyline we saw was bad and the art as well. I can’t think of anything redeeming about this. I don’t even suggest reading it if you’re all about reading everything Runaways. You don’t need anything from this volume to enjoy the reboot and I’m still annoyed I spent money on it. The reason I put kinda after the complete is that the series was cancelled after this volume. So the story isn’t complete but there will be no more of this. As a Runaways fan, if I had been reading this as it came out, I would have been happy it was cancelled. This is just bad.

The only reason I’m including this is because I know people are going to see the Runaways part of the title and pick it up. So up front, our favorite gay baby, Karolina Dean, isn’t in this, only Molly. Yup, the only Runaway is Molly, no one else. The story isn’t bad, but you’ll need to read up on this Battleworld to get an idea on what’s going on. The art isn’t okay. You definitely don’t have to read this to enjoy the reboot. This is basically an AU.

Written by New York Times best-selling author Christopher Golden, Runaways: An Original Novel is a fresh take on the Marvel fan favorite. Including the first issue of the revived Runaways comic series written by Rainbow Rowell and with art by Kris Anka, it's easy for fans of the comics, fans of the new Hulu TV show, and first-time readers to all enjoy this new take on an old classic.
Turns out murderous Super Villains don't make for good parents. The Runaways had no choice. They had to kill them. Well, more or less. Now Nico, Karolina, Gert, Chase, and Molly are on the run again, hiding out and trying to regain a sense of normalcy. But kids with super powers don't get to be normal.
The city is overrun with criminals, each faction bent on murdering them for one reason or another. It's only when the Runaways uncover the truth behind their parents' past that they realize the evil isn't just in L.A.
It's everywhere.

My Next Life as a Villainess: The Good Harem Series
A confession: I have never liked harem series. I understand the appeal — it’s a power fantasy, where the main character can be surrounded by people who unconditionally love them. It also indulges the viewer that they, too, can imagine themselves in that same scenario. Being surrounded by gorgeous people is a dream! Still, for some reason, harem series never clicked with me. I’m also not a fan of otome games, so I was very ambivalent going into My Next Life as a Villainess. I didn’t expect to like it this much. So what drew me in? What made it so much of a fun watch, even to someone who never thought they'd like a harem series?
The first thing that stands out is that I like all the characters — and there aren't too many of them. Sometimes the harem becomes so large that it becomes spread thin and you can't appreciate the nuances of each character. Each one here is vastly different from the other. And while they may all have a common goal, their personalities and what binds them to Catarina could not be more different. You can't mistake the loyal Keith for the more rowdy Alan, despite them both forming a bond with Catarina around the same time. While I have my personal favorite romantic candidates, for the first time I think I’d be okay with Catarina ending up with someone who's not my top choice. They all seem like they care for Catarina as a person first and foremost, so there doesn't seem to be a bad pick in the bunch!
While the power of the harem is having people unconditionally love you, there’s also the fact that Catarina doesn’t seem to be aware of the power she holds. She is under the impression that all of them are mere friends and still believes things will go the way they did in the game (despite the fact that her impact has already greatly changed even the characters' personalities). Of course, Catarina isn’t the first harem protagonist to be completely oblivious, but there’s something genuine about the way she goes about it. Since she is in a friendship-only mindset, she wants the best for her friends. She is wishing for their happiness and wanting them all to bond with each other too, even if she has yet to realize that she's the one in the spotlight. That leads to a lot of situational humor, which makes the show an absolute blast.
What was most impactful for me is how exactly each one of them came to fall in love with Catarina. While each person has their own reasons and all of them are understandable. Catarina brings confidence, puts effort into seeking people out, and is always surprising. Who wouldn't fall for someone who looks out and cares for you? A few are more gradual and increase as they spend more time together, such as Geordo coming to value the excitement that Catarina brings to his life and Mary warming up as Catarina makes an effort to get to know her. While she may be dense and clumsy, she is a good soul, one who has been part of their lives for a long time. Regardless of whether they started out romantically attached, they have come to fall in love with her. We see that initial spark, but the flame is tended to over time. While instant, passionate love is really fun, it’s nice to see a relationship build up naturally, too.
Most importantly, it’s understandable why Catarina would be the object of their affections. She is different than most nobility and she has a kind heart. While her main objective is (unbeknownst to the majority of the cast), wanting to survive her time at school and escape her upcoming bad end, she is a nice person at heart. While her initial plans focused on changing up certain events, most of Catarina’s relationship building has been due to her being kind to the people around her. She reaches out, she apologizes when she’s in the wrong, she doesn’t take her status for granted. Even if it’s unbefitting of her position, she is genuine at all times, and people find that charming. Over time, she has changed their lives for the better. And even before romance came into play, she was their friend.
I'm usually not a fan of power fantasies — which the harem grounds itself in — but to say Villainess isn't a power fantasy is untrue. It is, but it doesn't have to do with being the most powerful person alive. Catarina starts out wealthy and engaged to the prince, sure, but she isn't aiming to be queen. Her ambition isn't what draws people to her — being a nice person is. Her power is simply using her kindness to (hopefully) avoid tragedy, to change the world around her. With how things are now, that's a fantasy I can get behind. So thank you, Villainess. Thank you for reminding me that it isn't that I dislike the genre, but that I needed a new spin on it to really get into it.
