#I specify that because I have no idea how much leeway most people have in their dosage of blood pressure medications?

Crafting and booster shot updates! - little crochet airplane is finished, baby blanket is washed, checked for loose threads, and ready to go!  - my dad and I got the booster shot on Friday, and my brother held off so that there’d be at least one functional person in the house this weekend. He’s going to get his booster shot sometime this week, and will take the blanket and airplane to the lady at the pharmacy for me when he does - I ironed the fabric for my next quilt, which will be a quilt to donate - I did not expect to get much crafting done this weekend, and I didn’t, but taking extra meds (mostly benadryl) helped me SO MUCH with the booster side effects. Turns out like 95% of the side effects I had after previous vaccines were not vaccine side effects, they were side effects from being injected with something I am allergic to*. I didn’t have low blood pressure problems! I didn’t almost pass out!! I did spend most of the weekend resting but oh my gosh the improvement is almost unbelievable. My blood pressure was so low for so long last time, even after a *triple dose* of my usual meds that raise my blood pressure, that if it weren’t for covid I probably would have been at an urgent care to get an IV of fluids. *I’m allergic to vinegar, and there’s acetic acid in the vaccine**. Vinegar is basically acetic acid plus water **please do not take this as medical advice of any kind, or as an example of getting medication you know you’re allergic to working out well. When the ads about medications say “do not take if you are allergic to any part of this medication”, they mean it. Talk to your doctor first. It is very, very important.
#long post#the person behind the yarn#vaccine mention#medical mention#seriously y'all I knew benadryl was like a magic fix-it for me before this but I didn't know it was this magic#(it's not magic it's that most of my problems are allergies pretending not to be allergies)#I spent three days with a blood pressure that was 80s over 40s after my last dose#and this time my blood pressure was actually a little high! (for me)#like 125/80 most of the first day#it's a little low today but only in a 'didn't get quite enough water yesterday' way#not in a 'cannot safely attempt stairs' way#and my heartrate only got in the 110s!!! not the 150s!!!#and my blood pressure was a little high because I took an extra dose of my blood pressure go up medication (at my doctor's recommendation)#I specify that because I have no idea how much leeway most people have in their dosage of blood pressure medications?#but I am. uh. wary of accidentally suggesting something that would be very very bad for anyone without my specific health problems#cannot emphasize enough that I am both not a medical professional and what the doctors literally called a medical mystery#side note: I am so extremely glad I was able to talk my dad into getting the booster#he got his first shot a year and a half ago and did not get any boosters#and now only the MRNA boosters are approved? and he got the J&J shot because he does not trust the MRNA#but apparently he trusts them now that so many people have had them????#idk what changed his mind but I am very very glad

Hi I just want to ask something. Do you think Jungkook has been always like/love Jimin the way he is before or just when he started to glow up. I'm just asking this bc you know Jungkook has been always rank Jimin last on looks or said he look different without makeup before. I know he didn't meant harm to Jimin but do you think Jimin has been trying to look good and go on extreme diet to be loved by Jungkook or Jungkook has been always trying to hide his feelings for him but act tough
Huh?...
What an interesting question....
For a moment there I thought I had already discussed this in my blog posts? Chileee.
Now you'd have to specify which period in time you consider a glow up point for Jimin. Do you mean the period of 2014/15 when he was starving himself, passing out on stage and bleeding through his nose to stay anorexic? *Side eyeing you.
To me, Jimin's 'glow up' coincided with their debut in 2013. Those fine abs, sculpted muscles yet soft toned feminized features- sorry Jimin, you weren't fooling no one.
This was also the period I noticed JK showing overt signs of sexual and emotional attraction towards Jimin. Jimin just seemed oblivious to it. And he would begin his own whipped journey around 2015/16 in my opinion.
Personally, I believe JK fell first for Jimin and 'turned' him- turned for lack of a better word. I don't buy into this whole Jimin fell first JK fell harder rhetoric.
But I think JK's interest in Jimin began long before this period. I don't think Jk had fully grasped the concept of his own sexuality much less to have come to terms with it in any time before 2012- before Jimin arrived in Bangtan- ok maybe he had a vague idea of it, but I do believe Jimin was his sexual and romantic awakening.
Jk and Jimin have two very distinct and opposite idol personas. I keep saying this.
Since we don't know them in person, I think it's safe to assume every aspect of them we experience on screen is a persona.
That persona is a facade, a curated wall on which they project bits and pieces of their true self and often put up a performance of this identity for our consumption.
In Jk's persona, he likes to retract and conceal aspects of his true personality and censor himself a lot while JM likes to amplify and exaggerate his true personality and put up a performance of it.
As I've said, it's mainly due to their backgrounds. JK was given a lot of leeway in his upbringing which he feels puts him at a disadvantage because he ends up exposing himself too much. Thus he likes to retract and hold himself back.
Jimin coming from a conservative background with many rules and what not revels in the new found freedom Idol life gives him so often he doesn't hold back as much as JK does. But that doesn't mean that who they really are in real life.
So often you'd hear people say Jimin looks more serious in person than he does on camera while JK is said to be more expressive than he usually is on camera.
But here is the thing, concealing his feelings is not JK's nature it's his choice. And this is very important to note. He chooses not to do certain things on camera while Jimin chooses to do certain things on camera.
So when JK is not showing his feelings for Jimin it's not because he can't show those feelings, it's more like he doesn't want to show those feelings.
Thus when people say he wasn't showing his feelings for Jimin because he was shy I raise my brows- Shy my ass. Lol
Was he acting tough then? Hmmmm. He likes to act tough no two ways about that. I've said he has a good poker face between him and Jimin. If you are not careful you might think he doesn't like Jimin. But trust me, that man is whipped on god.
But I don't think that's what he was doing in those early dynamics.
I think he was hesitant in pursuing Jimin openly at the time because he wasn't sure about Jimin's sexual orientation much less whether or not Jimin reciprocated the feelings he had for him.
And you could tell not knowing these about Jimin terrified JK a lot, hence his hesitation.
But later when he was certain of both he became more confident in the way he expressed himself and his feelings for Jimin.
Prior to this you could see him fishing and testing the waters with Jimin, slowly pushing Jimin's boundaries- a gentle touch here, a lingering stare there.
He would often pay attention to the things Jimin would say but especially about his romantic and sexual preferences. Like when Tae said he felt Jimin liked men and when Jimin was asked about why he liked JK and JK seemed like he wanted to know.
Then he went through that phase where he seemed obsessed with Jimin's reaction to when other guys sexualised him and expressed interest in him. He seemed very attentive to these little details in a way that seemed to me as if he was fishing for confirmation that Jimin actually liked men and liked him- in a nonplatonic manner.
I feel Jimin noticed these things too in JK but was mostly fascinated by it. So often he would go out of his way to express his sexuality, exaggerate it and perform it as if to let JK know he was ok with JK liking him in that kind of way. Often, you'd see him egging JK on to touch him where JK seemed hesitant, reassuring JK- I think y'all know the bit I'm talking about. I feel JM wanted JK to feel comfortable expressing his interest in him- he ain't slick.
I've said Jimin's persona is a performance. I can see how to JK that could be very confusing. Hell, half of the fandom still read Jimin wrong to this day. Is he gay, bi, straight, a woman, a man, bigender- it's a lot of questions. Legitimate questions.
And I think for JK, seeing Jimin behave like the rest of BTS with the skinship towards him was equally confusing. So often he would shy away from it. Jk was going through puberty, everything was heightened for him.
It's also important to consider the possibility that, if JK was LGBTQ plus that he was going to hide it and not come out to his bandmates for as long as he worked with them- because it's none of their business first and foremost but also because it would have affected their attitudes towards him.
I mean look at the fear and panic with which they greet Jikook when Jikook breath anywhere near eachother in public spaces- not to call them out or anything but I don't think if they were straight that they were going to treat them same. I mean Taejin is as wild as Jikook but.... sigh.
So then going on to catch feelings for one of such said band mates who gives off queer vibes, he had better be sure about him before coming out to him and confessing to him lest he risked his career and friendship with him.
If Jimin wasn't LGBTQ plus it would have been cruel of him to act the way he does with JK honestly. For instance Joking about marriage knowing full well the fight LGBTG plus couple have to put up to have this basic human right- of course JK would yeet himself out of that conversation. I'm talking about that Jikook Vlive and all the time JK has squeezed his face disgruntledly when Jimin has asked him to have his kids- like why Jimin!
Jimin I feel because he is Bi whatever doesn't take this gay business seriously at all. If you've ever dated a bisexual you'd know the feeling. He is my bias and I love him but God he frustrates me for Jk honestly.
What annoys me most is I know how deep he is into JK. Like I've never seen a man so in love with another man in my entire queer life! Like shut up whippidy whipped ass we saw your face at Manila. You like that man. You like him.
Let JK put up a front and you'll see this tactless homegirl descending into that space we all hate so much and embarrassing himself left right left clinging on to JK seeking validation and reassurance- like can you be serious in your life for once Park Jimin. 😒
Anywho, I went off on a tangent there. Sorry.
But yes, this is another aspect of their dynamic I feel most people get twisted. Jimin enjoys JK's expressions of interest in him- however way he does it. Jk enjoys it too when Jimin shows him he wants him. Remember magic shop? Show me, I'll show you? And that line JK sang to Jimin that made Jimin nervous on Live with VMin? Yea...
They love each other and they love when the other is showing and expressing their love. Hell, isn't that why they are constantly trying to find creative ways to communicate their love? 5/8, love letters punctuated with sorries? Chileee.
Could Jimin's look be a contributing factor to JK liking him? Let me put it this way. People are attracted to people for a plethora of reasons, physical appearance being one of them.
Looks attract people, emotional connection binds them and make them stay. I have said this time and again JK is attracted to all of Jimin-looks, everything. When asked which part of of Jimin he liked most he put all of Jimin as the answer.
With regards to JM's weight, I think the tears he shed on stage during the performance of I Need You says it all. Jimin was killing himself and it was killing JK. Jimin wasn't doing all that out of self love much less for the love of JK.
He was doing all that because he wanted to be an Idol in every sense of the word. He was killing himself for his career. A career JK was once willing to walk away from and JM advised him to stay.
Jk defies the dictates of his career with the piercings and tattoos and gay pubs- the emphasis is mine. Y'all think he is about to be demanding of his life partner to look like what now? Chileee.
And when JK was starving himself and losing weight who was it that brought him down that ledge? Jimin. If it was a positive thing I thing he would have encouraged him.
Jk allegedly called Jimin his Mochi in that infamous graduation night track video. Did you see his reaction to when James Corden called Jimin Mochi? Baby fat cheeked Jimin was cute not ugly. And even if you think he was, JK still found that attractive. Jimin could be looking like my Aunt Becky and Jk would still fuck him.
Have you seen JK freeze frame to take snapshot photos of Jimin? It's almost always pictures of Jimin looking like the wicked witch of the west. He loves him some park Jimin memes. Loves that man to death.
How many times have he said Jimin looks beautiful without makeup? Remember the Vlive Jimin didn't want to be on camera because he didn't have makeup on? What did JK say?
Jk isn't a shallow person you know. He really isn't. He doesn't strike me as the kind at all. Questions like these presupposes that JK is a vain shallow person who only likes people for their looks. Don't get me wrong, it's a valid question, one that I'm happy to discuss but it also exposes the biases against JK and indirectly, Jimin.
Do you feel JK is shallow? I find a lot of people do and it breaks my heart.
Have you heard any of his songs? His GCFs?
He barely idolizes his subject matter's looks and appearances. You gave me the best of you, so I'll give you the best of me. What I found in you is real. That's doesn't sound shallow to me.
They work in a highly competitive and highly vainglorious environment. I think they know more than anything the dangers of vanity- it's fleeting. They put themselves through so much to appease the vanity matrics, to subject people they love through the same.
I've talked about how because JM comes from a demanding home and work environment that acceptance is one key aspect of his love language. He wants a person who loves him for who he is and accepts him without placing expectations on him.
If JK was this shallow JM wouldn't honestly have found him attractive much less love him to begin with. He wouldn't have found fulfillment and nourishment from JK. He loves JK because JK's values and upbringing makes him the perfect person for him to trust himself fully to.
Besides, for JK to be only attracted to JM because he glowed up, he himself must have been a ten from the onset which he wasn't let's be honest- no shade to him but he wasn't exactly packing now was he?
BTS are pretty but they've all undergone hefty transformations throughout the years, magic foreheads and all. So if you wonder if Jimin's glow up contributes to JK liking him, then you'd have to wonder if Jk glowing up also contributed to Jimin finding him attractive- it's a vicious cycle.
As for JK ranking Jimin last... did he ever rank himself first? No. He ranked Jimin last and himself second to last consistently. If he found Jimin unattractive he certainly found himself as equally unattractive only one step above Jimin.
I honestly think he was just teasing Jimin. He loves teasing Jimin because it's how he flirts with him. It's just the masculine energy in him I guess. V does this too when he flirts with Jimin. He teases him about his pinky, his Mochi cheeks and his glow up- Iland anyone?
Why y'all think JK looked away sharp when JM dropped to the floor?? He recognized what V was doing- don't mind me. I'm trolling. Lol. But deadass.
Jimin teases JK too by acting like he is available most times. It's the feminine energy in him. Girls like to tease their crush by amplifying their sex appeal. What better way to amp up your sex appeal than by having other people show interest in you? Jimin is a tease. Bless him.
Besides, when JK ranked Jimin first in looks he ranked himself last. I hope y'all don't think it's because he has low self esteem?
He ranked himself and Jimin last because he wanted to humble himself and by extension Jimin because he sees himself as Jimin's equal and as such recognizes their place as the youngest within the group. As he has explained, as the youngest, he places everyone else above him.
I honestly don't think Jungkook had always been interested in Jimin. But somewhere along the line while he came to terms with his own sexuality he began developing feelings for Jimin. His glow up had nothing to do with it. In my opinion.
I think Jimin caught him off guard? It's that red string serendipity destiny voodoo working its magic that orchestrating their love. In my opinion.
I don't think either of Jikook went searching for this love thingy either as I keep saying. It wasn't planned, it wasn't foreseen, it just happened to both of them but at a different pace.
I hope this helps?
Signed,
GOLDY

A/N: This request has been in my inbox for so long and I feel so bad. I hope you like it though!! I tried not to specify which character the reader plays so that it gives more leeway for whoever is reading it. I haven’t seen SPN is so long so this is gonna be a cringe party.
~~~
“Disneyland?” Dean asked, whipping around to face his brother. Sam sat, staring at the email displayed on his laptop.
“That’s what Charlie said,” Sam sighed out. He turned the laptop around to Dean, letting him skim over the beginning of the message.
“What does she think it is?”
“Werewolf.” The younger Winchester stood, closing the top of the laptop. Dean sat down in one of the uncomfortable motel chairs, kicking his legs up. His left hand came up to scratch the back of his neck, fingers brushing his hairline.
“Why does she need our help?”
“Dean...”
“Yeah yeah, I know we have to go, but I don’t have to be happy about it.”
The costume wasn’t pleasant. You were sure that other actors or actresses had it worse, some not indoors at the moment, with the hot sun beating down. Still, the wig was itchy and your were sure you were sweating around the edges of it.
“Walking time starts in ten,” Your staff member for the day, Amelia, said. Her rosy cheeks were even redder than usual, the heat bringing the color to her face.
You nodded, moving to finish up your makeup. Staring into the mirror, you thought to the rumors spreading through the park. There was a knew ride being built, one that was supposed to have opened last week, but was pushed back when a worker had been killed inside. Torn apart, everyone said, but something else was going on. The company had said he had been caught in open machinery, but the staff of the park said he had been strewn about the decorations, and nowhere near any machines. And they were right. It had been a sight that made you puked and gag when you had discovered it.
The blood and body parts strewn about may have well been enought to turn even the most season CSI’s stomach.
“Time to go,” Amelia interrupted, pulling you from your thoughts, It relieved you, to not be forced to think about it for lack of a better pass time.
You stood, stepping out of the door to the room and following Amelia. You would be walking around the entrance to the castle today, so not far and not for long. If you were being honest, the idea of being out there with the threat of more deaths that would be brushed off as accidents scared you. Sent a chill down your spine at the thought of ending up like the worker.
The worst thought yet being that someone had meticulously torn him part and draped him over the ride. Maybe they would come for you next, as a way to tie up loose strings.
The thought alone was nightmare fuel.
~~~
“I hate this place,” Dean grumbled, dodging past a screaming kid.
“Weren’t you the one who begged Dad to take you that year we were here in California?” Sam retored, raising a brow at his brother. Dead scoffed, sending the taller brother a look.
“Yeah, when I was ten,” He scowled at a passing Mickey actor. “Now it just smells like piss, disappointment, and shitty food.”
Weaving through the crowd, Sam shook his head.
“The park manager said that there was only one person who saw the body before the cops arrived. They found the worker the night he died, and all we have to do is ask them a few questions and then we can come back tonight.”
“I’m having fun,” Charlie popped up out of nowhere, hair pulled up into a high ponytail to relieve her neck of the summer heat. “Have you tried the churros?”
“Focus, Charlie.” Dean grumbled, pulling the churro she held in front of his face from her hand. He stared at it only a moment before sighing and taking a bite. Charlie only grinned, practically skipping down the walkway.
Sam chuckled, pointing across the way to where an actor was taking pictures with a kid. “That's them.”
“Let’s get this over with,” Dean said around another bite of churro.
~~~
The summer sun was becoming almost unbearable as yet another child approached you, begging for a picture. The smile never left your face though, fake or otherwise. You wouldn’t have taken the job if you didn’t love the look of absolute adoration on the children’s faces that you got when they looked up to you.
The line dispersed suddenly, two gentlemen in suits and a redheaded woman in normal clothes approached. They flashed a badge, to Amelia, and she leaned to the other worker, whispering.
“Come with us, away from the crowds,” She said to the three people, motioning for you to follow. Confused was an understatement of how you felt, but you knew what this was probably about. Though, why they felt the need to question you again was unknown.
Once away from the park goers and in a place with ample air conditioning, you sat, looking up at the three people while Amelia and the other worker left.
“You’re here about that worker I found, aren’t you?” You asked, looking down at your hands as you fiddled with them. The tallest of the men nodded, smiling down at you gently.
“We heard the detectives had already questioned you, but we had a few of our own.” He showned his badge, and the sight of the letters ‘FBI’ was enough to have you reeling back.,
“Federal agents? But don’t you guys only work on special cases, like serial killers and people like that?” The other man, shorter and meaner looking, nodded, taking a slight step towards you.
“Yes, we have reason to believe this isn’t the first time the person responsible has done something like this.” His voice was gruff, not wasting any time in being gentle with his words.
“I thought it was being ruled as an accident?”
“It has, but we are just being thorough,” The woman cut in, and awkward smile plastered on her face. You knew a fake smile when you saw one.
“Bullshit, and you aren’t feds.” You said bluntly, standing up with a bored look on your face. The woman looked surprised, while the two men shared a glance.
“Why do you say that?” The taller asked nervously.
You tilted your head in a ‘seriously?’ manner, motioning to where he put his badge. “Your name on your badge says ‘Geralt Rivia’, who it the main character of The Witcher. Plus, I know acting when I see it. Especially shitty acting.”
The shorter one opened his mouth in protest, but the woman cut in. Her eyes were wide, voice quick. “We are monster hunters and we think the worker was killed by a werewolf.”
“Charlie!” The taller one hissed, turning to the girl. She shrugged, motioning to you.
“She was already onto us, and plus, we need someone who knows the park and the workers!” She moved across the room to you, who still stood stock still, eyes wide. “Do you know anyone who has been acting strange, or acts strange about once a month, Maybe even misses a few days.”
You snorted, shrugging. “Any woman with a period.”
“We mean around the full moon.”
You thought about it, going over all the workers who you knew. There weren’t many who would risk missing any days, and even fewer who didn’t act weird on a regular bases. All of you were incredibly close, and weren’t afraid to be odd with each other. One person, however, did come to mind, one that made sense now that you thought about it.
“The man killed, Thomas, was dating one of the other workers until recently. They broke up when she found out he was cheating, but everyone thought they were over it. She mostly just ignored his presence.” You moved around them to the door.
“Who?” Charlie asked?
“The girl who led us here, Amelia.”
The two shared a look, nodding to you. “Then I think we should be asking Amelia a few questions.” The taller said. He walked over to you, holding out a hand to shake.
“Sam Winchester, and this is my brother Dean.” He motioned to the still angry looking shorter brother. You smiled at them, strained but still an honest smile.
“I’m (Y/N).”
I'm really bad at math, and curious. How old would Jushtin have been around the time Festivia came around? (I've seen alot of people hc that he died when she was 14-)
Short answer: Jushtin was probably around 58 when Festivia was born, and would have turned 59 a few months later. If you care about how I got to this, enjoy the freaking essay I wrote bellow (you can skip to the end if you want to know about death dates).
So the issue with this is that we don’t get a clear timeline in the book of when things happened (like births and stuff) so the best I can do is a really good estimate. I went so in depth with this... I promise everything I did bellow helped me reach a point. To make it easy to read, I’m gonna break it down based on which princess we’re calculating the birthday of.
- Solaria -
We can assume that Solaria was born before Jushtin’s 15th birthday because his chapter doesn’t make any indication that a year has passed (he calls both his entries “Year of the Jushtin”). I’m not sure how Mewni months work, but in terms of Earth months (assuming Mewmans are pregnant for 9 Earth months) Solaria was born between 8 and 9 Earth months after Jushtin turned 14. It depends when her birth actually is (is it earlier or later in the Lion Dragon time) but either way, it’s possible Skywynne was pregnant before Jushtin even got the wand, but waited a few months to tell him.
So that’s a long, convoluted way of saying he was 14 when Solaria was born.
- Eclipsa -
It’s not very clear when Solaria had Eclipsa because Solaria’s chapter doesn’t specify how it’s counting time. She has a table on contents that divides things into “Books” and “Chapters” but neither of those seem to suggest a timeline. Eclipsa is first mentioned in chapter 5 and is said to be very young, and the photo would suggest she was definitely not younger than 3. Even if “chapter 5″ meant “5 years after getting the book” that would make Solaria 19, meaning she had Eclipsa when she was (at most) 16. Now I’m not saying that’s impossible, but the Solaria we see in the show with baby Eclipsa does NOT look like a 16 year old. I’m going to guess that she actually started writing when she became QUEEN, not when she gained the book (we can assume this because, in chapter 1, Solaria says it is her reign, and Alphonse calls her “Queen Solaria” in the letter on the next page).
So when did she become Queen? Skywynne had Solaria when she was 42 (she was 28 when she had Jushtin, 28+14=42) so she would have been 62 when Solaria turned 20. Skywynne probably didn’t die at this age since it’s still pretty young, but it’s likely she gave Solaria the throne (remember, Skywynne had been reigning since she was 17. It would have been 45 years of being Queen, plus 5 years mentally from her messing with time. So yeah, Skywynne was probably tired of being Queen). 20 seems like a good age to pass the throne to your kid. However, there’s still more.
In Eclipsa’s chapter, Eclipsa says that she’s dated all sorts of monsters, but she’s already in a relationship with Globgor by the time she starts writing (“several” months after turning 14). We see that she knows Globgor during Solaria’s “chapter 5″ so she must have been old enough to date. That means I’m going to have to assume that that photo is from when Eclipsa was way younger. Maybe Eclipsa was around 12 when that incident happened. That would mean the chapter numbers are meaningless but hey, sometimes you need to hit a few dead ends before reaching something good.
Ok, so either way Solaria was 20 when she became queen. Let’s guess that she was maybe 22 when she had Eclipsa. That would make her 34 during the Globgor incident, still young enough to be fighting wars! So if she was 22 when Eclipsa was born, and Jushtin was 14 when Solaria was born, then Jushtin was 36 years old upon Eclipsa’s birth (14+22=36).
Hurray! We’ve got... an estimate. Hey, I warned you at the start we wouldn’t get an exact answer.
- Festivia and Meteora -
So now let’s move on to Eclipsa’s age and when she had Meteora. I’m going to assume that Meteora and Festivia were around the same age, separated only by a few months (we see they are similar ages during Eclipsa’s trial). Either way, it wouldn’t affect Jushtin since his birth seems to be near the end of the year.
Just like her mother, Eclipsa sucks at documenting dates, so we have no idea how long she was writing for (she writes numbers at the top of her pages, but I don’t know what those mean. Are they related to dates? Are they her entry numbers? Who knows?!) Anyways, we actually get a good guess at how old Eclipsa was based on some stuff Moon tells us.
Moon reveals that she was around Star’s age when Comet died. Star, at this point in the show, was 14 (we’d see her 15th birth a few episodes later). However, I found a gem in Moon’s chapter (which I admit, I haven’t read in it’s entirety yet) that says she had just turned 17 when she got Lil’ Chauncy! 2 pages later she reveals that Comet was killed and she has become Queen. Since we know from the episode “Moon the Undaunted” that Moon made the Eclipsa deal not too long after Comet’s death, we know she was 17. What does this have to do with anything? Eclipsa makes a comment and says she lost her mother when she was “not much older than [Moon]”.
We get no information from Eclipsa’s chapter because our girl doesn’t know how to document time, so we have to interpret what “not much older” means. Judging by Moon thinking 14 and 17 are close in age (it’s a 3 year gap) I’m going to believe that Solaria died when Eclipsa was 20 (also a 3 year gap). Why 20? Because why not? Actually, it’s because I don’t want to think that Solaria was setting up her 17 year old daughter for marriage, so I’m gonna say 20 and leave it at that.
We don’t know how long it took for Eclipsa to get sick of Shastacan and leave with Globgor, but judging by the fact that Eclipsa had a few entries between “I’m marrying Shastacan” and “I’m running away with Globgor”, I’m gonna guess 2 years. Why 2 years? Please just let me make my estimates.
So Eclipsa is now 22 and has run off. For the MHC to say “Eclipsa and Shastacan had a baby despite Eclipsa being away from him”, she either had to already be pregnant with Meteora, or she had to get pregnant shortly after (the MHC could have some leeway if Festivia was a few months older than Meteora). Either way, Eclipsa was around 22 when Meteora was born.
Back to our boy Jushtin. He was 36 when Eclipsa was born. 36+22=58. Jushtin was 58 years old when Festivia was born! AND since we know his birthday, he would have turned 59 shortly after.
- Death -
As for Jushtin’s death… I know people like to headcanon that he died when Festivia was 14. 58+14=72. The average male lifespan right now is 71 years, so it’s possible he died at that age. I personally love the headcanon that his death is the reason she went travelling for a year (and I use it in my au). HOWEVER, we’re talking canon here, so we need to consider something else.
Festivia does not bring up Jushtin ONCE in her entire chapter. Isn’t that weird? She says that the MHC raised her and affecionatly called Heckapoo “Auntie Heckapoo”. Is it possible Jushtin was just off with his own family? Of course it is! But we see how close Jushtin seemed to be with Festivia in the afterlife, implying they knew each other in life (they are the ONLY queens we see actively make physical contact with each other). So my personal guess is that Jushtin died when she was still pretty young maybe around 5 or 6? She’d still remember him, and she’d have fond memories, but it wouldn’t have been long enough to say “My Grunkle Jushtin raised me”, so the MHC would still have a good 8 or 9 years to raise Festivia. So if you want to believe that Jushtin died when she was a kid, he would have been around 63 or 64. If you want to believe he died when she was 14, he was 72.
Hope you enjoyed! This was a lot of fun to write, hopefully it was interesting to read (well, as interesting as math can be).
Let The Sunshine In
Lately, I’ve been hearing a common refrain from people throughout my life - friends, family, students, parents, and even strangers and acquaintances on social media…
“I’m just so tired. Everything is exhausting.”
And when exploring this a little further, I’ve begun to notice a pattern. A very common pattern, in fact, and one that I have fallen into many times.
Does this - or something like it - sound familiar?
Wake up
Caffeinate/Eat
Work
Eat
Work
Exercise perhaps?
Obligations
Eat
Obligations
Zombie out in front of electronics
Sleep
Rinse and repeat.
This is a common pattern - and I have absolutely nothing against patterns or routines, I personally thrive off them! But the above doesn’t seem to be leaving much, if any, time for joy.
Now, I’m not talking about carving out big periods of time on a daily basis for “relaxation” or regularly skiving off obligations to instead do something fun. What I’m talking about is finding a way to include just a little bit of joy in your daily life. Just a little bit of sunshine amidst all the necessities.
But how?
Walking Proudly In Our Winter Coats
“Michael, why are we talking about this? You’re not a life coach, so what’s the artistic spin here?”
Excellent question as always, dear reader!
Do you ever notice how we sometimes wear our exhaustion as a badge of honor? We may hate how tired we are, but then we’ll compare how run-down we feel to how our friends, enemies, frenemies, and/or strangers feel.
Of course we do, we’ve been conditioned to do that! *Work yourself to death for that money, or die trying!*
But this overworking is a strictly capitalist idea - it’s meant to produce output, not creativity. It’s about the greater machine, not the individual. It’s about achieving what we’ve been told to achieve or what we need to achieve for survival, not about what we are interested in or what we desire.
Therefore, dear reader, it’s relevant to art because creation is something we do to bring us joy in our lives.
For many artists, even though our art is our careers, we are often not getting paid enough by our creative endeavors to work purely in that field on a daily basis. So we must take other jobs as well that may not be as fulfilling (though hopefully they are adjacent to our careers), but at least they make us the money we need to survive and fuel the creative side.
But when there is no time or energy left in our routines - something that tends to be a gradual shift and which we don’t see happening - the art and the joy are left to the wayside. And then the world is a lot less beautiful and interesting.
Exhaustion is not a badge to wear. An inability to be energized is not good. A lack of joy, large or small, is not positive for anyone.
Ultimately, however, it is us who has control.
Simple Joys
There are countless things in life that could potentially bring us joy, which means there are a million and a half ways of incorporating those things into our lives.
I can only speak from personal experience and the experiences of those I am close to, but I think the basic principles can be applied to most everyone.
Here are the things that we first need to know:
Was there a time my daily routine made me happier? Have you always felt this way - just tired all the time? Or was there a time when things were better? When was that?
What changed? If there was a less overwhelming time, what is the difference between then and now? Perhaps even write out what your day looked like then and what it looks like now. What’s different? Is there an obvious shift of some sort?
What small things bring you joy? These can be things that, perhaps, you used to have or do that have fallen to the wayside recently. Or these can be things that you like to do, but you only reserve them for specified “relaxation times.” Or perhaps they are changes you’d like to make, but just haven’t figured out how yet.
What in your daily life is exhausting you the most? Sure, most of life is tiring. Everything demands energy from us - work, travel, family, clients, social obligations, unexpected events, emergencies, phone calls, texts, emails…the list goes on. But what are your top, biggest drains? Can anything be shifted to make these less exhausting in any way?
Are there smaller exhaustions you can get rid of? These are things like not answering work emails after 5:00pm. Or, deciding that you don’t have to pick up the phone every time it rings. Can the smaller things be gotten rid of or diminished?
Now, do you see ways to incorporate the small joys into your daily routine? Have you actually created spaces that can be filled? Or do you see any flexibility?
This process is not of my creation, it was recommended to me by a therapist friend of mine several years ago. At the time I was young and stupid and proud, and totally ignored the advice.
Bad move.
I allowed myself to go from feeling tired all the time, to absolutely exhausted and depressed. Again, this is a common pattern that sooooo many of us fall into. But! This process is fantastic and it works.
Allow me to give you an example from my own life.
Sweet Summer Evenings, Hot Wine and Bread
Last year my routine began to feel tiring and stale.
In addition to the tons of work I was doing for my job, I was working like a madman during any and all open times in my schedule to prepare The King’s Legacy and its materials for the upcoming production.
I wasn’t creating. My lists had lists. Anxiety was building into sleeplessness. Exercise became too much of a chore. Food was becoming a struggle. In other words - I was leaning into all of the behaviors that perpetuate exhaustion instead of fighting it.
Super common pattern.
There wasn’t a ton of leeway in my schedule to do anything about it, but I decided to shoehorn some flexibility in there anyway. I couldn’t stand the tiredness any longer. So…
Step 1 - The blog. I began to write this blog on a weekly basis. Perhaps there wasn’t enough time in my schedule to work on a new project or do much in-depth writing, but at the very least I could write a weekly, one-off piece to whet the creative muscles.
Step 2 - Podcasts. I love learning. I’m a huge nerd (surprise!) and I adore information. So I began taking my long commute drives and turning them into educational sessions by listening to podcasts. Instead of feeling tired at the end of my commute, I felt engaged and productive. I gained energy instead of losing it.
Step 3 - Greens. When working on Long Island I often buy a meal while I’m out there - partially for convenience and partially for lack of time. But I was always trying to be super conscious of how much money I was spending, and that was driving my food choices. Therefore, I wasn’t eating as many healthy choices as I could have been. So I decided to suck it up, pay the extra $3/day, and get a big ole salad as my daily LI lunch. Turns out that healthy foods really are that important.
Step 4 - Order the damned coffee. I love coffee and always have. Not for the caffeine necessarily, I just love coffee. I was feeling super guilty about the extra caffeine, cost, and stomach acid that was coming from my afternoon coffees before work, but I also work afternoons into the evenings and needed to remain awake enough to teach. So, I made the decision to just do it. Make it part of the day, no questions asked. It’s no longer a daily choice to get the coffee, it’s routine, and therefore no reason to feel guilt. Apparently, that small amount of daily guilt was draining more pre-work energy than the coffee had been providing.
Step 5 - Socialize. I realized about halfway through last year that I hadn’t been seeing my friends as regularly as I previously had been. Instead, I was choosing to spend all of my time working. As soon as I made the choice to stop working and socialize at least once per week, there was a marked improvement in my happiness level.
And these were just the changes that I made last year. Since returning from the summer, I came prepared with a plan to add even more happiness into my daily life. Here are some other changes I’ve made:
Buying scented candles - They may be expensive, but they make me feel calm and productive. Seems worth it.
New exercise routine - The old one was stale and not giving me the necessary endorphins.
Eating - I’ve stopped being as worried about counting calories, and thinking more about which foods I eat and how they will (positively, I hope) affect my body.
No more double screens - I used to scroll through my phone while watching TV at night and I think it made me overstimulated and anxious. Now, I take care of my social media first when I get home, then watch a little TV. Seems to help.
These little changes are working for me. I feel more energized and more ready to attack the day all day long. They may be tiny alterations, but they do add up.
Why Not Go Ahead?
I know that everyone is different. Peoples’ schedules and struggles and energy levels and physical/mental situations vary greatly.
But this is all I urge you to do:
If you’re one of those people feeling constantly exhausted, I want you to first forgive yourself. It’s okay to feel that way, and it doesn’t have to be a forever problem.
Then, I want you to take the time to evaluate, but do it on your schedule. When you’re able. No pressure. But, as I learned, it really is good advice from the mental health field and it does help.
And lastly, find some simple joys. Whether that be buying all the pumpkin spice you can consume, writing for 15 minutes two days per week, shutting off your phone at night, or planning a little me-time into your week…whatever it is, it will help rebalance your energy levels.
Find a little sunshine and let it in.
I kinda started on a thing that was supposed to be another take on @oathkeeper-of-tarth’s hot new pearl trend, but this is Mist and she doesn't really do the traditional active-type resistance most people would recognize. And really, this is just a fragment because I'm including a bit of geology on the end of the post because that's my thing.
Pearl didn't remember anything before forming for the first time in the sterile white expanse of a moonstone's showroom. She stood in front of the column where her gem had presumably been, with her back straight and one hand clasping the other in front of her. There were other columns with other pearls, but right now it seemed that she was the only one to form just then. Standing before her was a tall, bright green figure with black stripes in her hair that mirrored those stripes radiating from a central point in her gem, and next to that gem was a smaller white one who didn't bother to glance away from the tablet in front of her.
"I thought I specified that I wanted it *brighter*," the tall green gem grumbled. Pearl noticed that the gem on the back of the tall green gem's left hand matched the placement of her own. "Like me. And the skirt's all wrong."
The white gem's eyes fixed on her tablet, her voice bored and almost droning. "You can specify that to the pearl and any changes will remain after it regenerates its form. There's a terminal with a database of basic appearance modification samples in the back."
The green gem grunted and uncrossed her arms. A hand lashed forth to grab Pearl's chin and turn her face this way and that. It alarmed her, but she had no idea how to react and remained frozen. Then the hand moved to her shoulder and turned her so roughly that she almost lost her balance. That seemed to break the dour look on the taller gem's face and it turned into a much more unpleasant sort of smirk. "Eh, the color can stay, I suppose. Moonstone, I'll take it. Pearl, come. We need to change that ghastly skirt. I *know* I specified something with more leeway."
Pearl didn't know what was wrong with the skirt--it was ankle-length and opaque, and it swished nicely around her legs. But she followed her mistress to the terminal anyway, because it never approached her not to.
In time, Trapiche Emerald found the skirt she wanted on her pearl: nearly transparent and trailing in the back but cut to mid-thigh in the front. The second alteration was the opening up of the front of the leotard from hem to mid-sternum. Pearl shifted her form to reflect the changes. Then, before she knew it, she felt a sharp pain as something pierced her between the ribs and she had to release her form entirely.
When she returned to consciousness, she was in a new place. The sitting room was expansive, with luxurious couches and chairs. The viewscreen was enormous and set in one wall and against several walls were curio cabinets full of trinkets she couldn't possibly name. Centered in the wall opposite of the viewscreen was a portrait of a ship against a stylized backdrop of a nebula.
"The *Lonestar*," Trapiche Emerald said suddenly as she strode in from the hallway leading to other parts of her quarters. Her expression was dour again. "My pride and joy, and I don't even get to fly her."
Pearl didn't know what to say beyond a mild "I'm sorry, my Emerald."
Trapiche Emerald continued as if she hadn't even heard her. "I'm six emeralds divided by spokes of black tourmaline. I should have been shattered. But no, Blue Diamond thought I was a *perfect* exotic gem. I should be on that ship, but here I wait until she wants me trotted out for court again."
The lost sensation deepened. What could Pearl possibly say? And before she could think of anything, Trapiche Emerald strode to the biggest, plushest couch and slumped in the middle. Her voice was bored, and there was something underlying it that Pearl didn't like. "Entertain me, pearl. Dance."
Pearl stepped out onto the large, ornate blue-green rug in front of the couch and began. It was a simple dance with forms provided by her gem, but she did her best. Several minutes in, as she shifted her weight onto the tip of a single toe, something lashed out, wrapped around her ankle, and tugged it out from under her. She fell hard against the rug, and pain shot up where her elbow had hit the floor. Then, suddenly, there was a hoarse, ugly bark of laughter as she tried to get up. It felt worse than the physical pain of the fall. As much as she tried to keep her face placid, she couldn't quite stop the pricking of tears in her eyes.
Trapiche Emerald only laughed harder at the sight. Pearl stood as straight as she had when she first formed, and it didn't quite stop the horrible feeling inside her. "Wonderful! You'll work out after all."
--
An explanation because by any standard metric of gem purity and Homeworld's caste system, Trapiche Emerald shouldn't exist:
Typically beryls form in granitic pegmatites, but rarely they can also form in sedimentary rock. Trapiche emeralds have so far only been found in black shale, a sedimentary rock, and the black spokes are formed by what was probably shale being squished together by the growing emerald crystals. For further reading on real-world formation, go here.
This, of course, presents a problem with the automated process of Kindergartening and Homeworld’s rigid tunnel-vision approach to pretty much anything, all meaning that injecting emeralds in sedimentary matrices wouldn’t even be considered. Generally my take is that there’s a lot of prescriptivism among most Kindergarten-building peridots, and Peridot 2AA/e1!Peri’s ability to think beyond the standard recommended practices is a bit of an outlier and sort of a side-effect of her having to think creatively to get around her limitations. And, well, Trapiche Emerald wasn’t one of hers.
So, my thoughts are that Trapiche Emerald was injected into granitic pegmatite with an excess of tourmaline material polluting the beryl mix (tourmaline also grows in granitic pegmatite). How this happened was ultimately irrelevant--a botch at the factory, the mix tank for a used injector not being cleaned out properly, whatever--but the end result was that you had two different gems forming in the matrix. Beryl is harder than tourmaline, but tourmaline is heavier and denser. The tourmaline material ended up gravitating towards and being wedged in the center as the beryl material crystallized around it and forced the tourmaline material to grow in sheets. Thus, Trapiche Emerald.
When she came out, she should have been shattered on the spot. Had the percentage of tourmaline materials been higher, she would have. Had her impurities been anything other than another gemstone, like shale, she would have. But she formed as much more emerald than tourmaline, with her sections perfectly symmetrical and all her other impurities minimal. Blue Diamond kept her as a novelty, which results in her being bedecked in more luxury than an average emerald and kept chained to court. There would never be another.
And this, of course, leads to Trapiche Emerald being frustrated because she was meant to sail the sea of stars and she can’t, so she lashes out the only way she can.
Exactly how to Posses a Legal Medical Cannabis Card
"At the Tranquility in Medication Healing Facility in Sebastopol, the products on display consist of dried cannabis - including brand names like Kryptonite, Voodoo Dad and Train Accident - and also medical cookies arrayed below a sign saying, ""Shut out of Reach of Your Mommy.""
A number of Bay Location physicians who recommend clinical marijuana for their patients said in recent interviews that their customer base had actually increased to include teens with psychiatric conditions consisting of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
"" It's not everyone's medicine, but for some, it can make a profound distinction,"" stated Valerie Corral, a founder of the Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana, a clients' cumulative in Santa Cruz that has 2 lots minors as signed up clients.
Because California does not need medical professionals to report situations entailing clinical cannabis, no reputable data exist for the number of minors have actually been authorized to get it. However Dr. Jean Talleyrand, who started MediCann, a network in Oakland of 20 centers that authorize clients to make use of the drug, stated his team member had dealt with as lots of as 50 individuals ages 14 to 18 that had A.D.H.D. Bay Location doctors have gone to the center of the intense discussion about clinical marijuana, winning resistance for people with severe illnesses like terminal cancer cells and also HELP. Yet as these medical professionals use their discernment more freely, such assistance - also here - may be harder to round up, especially when it involves making use of marijuana to treat teenagers with A.D.H.D.
Tumblr media
youtube
"" The number of ways can one state 'among the most awful ideas of all time?'"" asked Stephen Hinshaw, the chairman of the psychology division at the College of cbdforsalenearme.com The Golden State, Berkeley. He cited studies showing that tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, interrupts attention, memory, and also concentration - functions already jeopardized in people with attention-deficit condition.
Supporters are just as adamant, though they remain in an unique minority. ""It's safer than pain killers,"" Dr. Talleyrand claimed. He and also various other marijuana advocates preserve that it is also more secure than methylphenidate (Ritalin), the stimulant prescription medicine most often used to deal with A.D.H.D. That medicine has documented prospective adverse effects including sleep problems, anxiety, facial tics, as well as stunted growth.
In 1996, citizens authorized a tally proposition making The golden state the first state to legislate medical marijuana. Twelve various other states have followed suit - enabling cannabis for a number of specified, significant conditions including cancer and AIDS - however just The golden state adds the grab-bag phrase ""for any other disease for which marijuana offers alleviation.""
This has actually left those physicians happy to ""suggest"" marijuana - in the Alice-in-Wonderland world of medical cannabis, they can not legally prescribe it - with the leeway that some use to a daring level. ""You can get it for a backache,"" claimed Keith Stroup, the owner of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.
Nonetheless, broadening its usage among youngsters is controversial also among physicians that license medical marijuana.
Gene Schoenfeld, a physician in Sausalito, stated, ""I would not do it for any person under 21 unless they have a dangerous issue such as cancer cells or HELP.""
Dr. Schoenfeld added, ""It's destructive to teens who chronically use it, and if it's being made use of medically, that indicates chronic usage.""
Dr. Nora D. Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, claimed she was particularly bothered with the risk of dependency - a risk she stated was currently high amongst adolescents and individuals with attention-deficit condition.
Counterintuitive as it might appear, nonetheless, individuals as well as doctors have been reporting that marijuana assists ease some of the signs, particularly the anxiousness as well as rage that so usually accompany A.D.H.D. The problem has been identified in greater than 4.5 million youngsters in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control as well as Prevention.
Researchers have connected the use of marijuana by teens to raised threat of psychosis as well as schizophrenia for people genetically inclined to those diseases. Nonetheless, one 2008 report in the journal Schizophrenia Study recommended that the incidence of mental illness among teens with the disorder that used cannabis was lower than that of nonusers.
Marijuana is ""a blessing"" for some people with A.D.H.D., said Dr. Edward M. Hallowell, a psychoanalyst who has created numerous publications on the problem. Nevertheless, Dr. Hallowell claimed he prevents his patients from utilizing it, both because it is - mainly - illegal, and also due to the fact that his observations reveal that ""it can bring about a disorder in which all the individual wishes to do all the time is obtain stoned, and they do nothing else.""
Up until the age of 18, patients requesting clinical marijuana needs to be accompanied to the doctor's visit and to the dispensaries by a parent or authorized caretaker. Some medical professionals spoke with stated they suspected that in at the very least some cases, moms and dads were accompanying their children primarily with the hope that medical authorization would permit the adolescents to avoid acquiring medicines on the street.
A current University of Michigan research study discovered that more than 40 percent of secondary school trainees had actually attempted cannabis.
"" I do not have a problem with that said, as long as we can have our clinical discussion,"" Dr. Talleyrand claimed, including that patients should have medical records to be seen by his physicians.
The Medical Board of California started checking out Dr. Talleyrand in the spring, said a board spokeswoman, Candis Cohen, after a KGO-TV report detailed questionable methods at MediCann centers, which, the report stated, had actually earned at the very least $10 million in 5 years.
Dr. Talleyrand as well as his team member are not alone in agreeing to recommend marijuana for minors. In Berkeley, Dr. Frank Lucido said he was questioned by the medical board however ultimately not disciplined after he authorized cannabis for a 16-year-old child with A.D.H.D. who had actually tried Ritalin unsuccessfully as well as was racking up a document of minor arrests.
Within a year of the brand-new treatment, he stated, the kid was getting better qualities and also was also elected president of his special-education class. ""He was informing his mom: 'My brain works. I can believe,'"" Dr. Lucido said.
"" With any type of medicine, you weigh the benefits versus the threats,"" he included.
However, MediCann individuals who get the authorization must sign a form listing feasible disadvantages of cannabis usage, including ""mental sluggishness,"" memory issues, uneasiness, confusion, ""enhanced talkativeness,"" rapid heart beat, trouble in completing complex tasks and also hunger. ""Some individuals can become dependent on marijuana,"" the firm also alerts.
The White House's recent signals of even more federal tolerance for state clinical cannabis regulations - which pointedly omitted sales to minors - reignited the dispute over clinical marijuana.
Some advocates, like Dr. Lester Grinspoon, an associate teacher emeritus of psychiatry at Harvard College, recommend that clinical cannabis's stigma has much less to do with inquiries of professional efficacy and more to do with its association, in pop culture, with illegal satisfaction as well as dependency.
Others, like Alberto Torrico of Fremont, the bulk leader of the California Setting up, argue for even more oversight generally. ""The marijuana is a lot more effective nowadays than when we were growing up, and also too much is being given for nonmedical reasons,"" he claimed in a meeting recently, candidly adding, ""Any kids being offered medical cannabis is unacceptable.""
As advocates of enhanced acceptance try to win assistance, they may find their significant debates compromised by the dispensaries' spirited environment.
OrganiCann, a dispensary in Santa Rosa, has a Web site promotion providing the ""edible of the week"" - butterscotch rock candy - invitingly photographed in a present box with a ribbon. OrganiCann additionally uses a 10 percent discount, every Friday, for clients with a valid pupil ID."
H Krueger & Associates on 50 Years of Success in Design
H Krueger & Associates on 50 Years of Success in Design
In 2019 we dedicated considerable energy to the discussion of superyacht design; an immensely dynamic field in which designers and architects must constantly strive to predict, realise and surpass their clients’ desires before they have even been conceived. As we reflect on this discussion in the new year, we spoke with Andrew Krueger, President of H. Krueger & Associates - an established US-based interior design firm boasting an enviously wide portfolio, who have now momentously finalised their 50th year of successfully realising their clients’ every vision.
H. Krueger & Associates, whose portfolio demonstrates a refined accomplishment in a multiplicity of design challenges – from smaller, bespoke projects to high-capacity research and learning facilities – are now turning their hands increasingly to the intricacies of yacht design, bringing with them the same flair for creativity and aesthetic with which they have graced their past projects.    By way of introduction, we began by asking Andrew to introduce the company, shedding light on the foundations of 50 years of success in design. “My father started the business in 1969,” he explained. “We’ve done a lot of residential, commercial, hospitality and everything in between. But we always wanted to get into doing yachts.” “I have a background in restoring small classic wooden boats,” Andrew went on to explain. “My father always approached it as a design problem is a design problem, if you have the creativity you can do any interior. That’s how we started reaching out to the yachting world.” Going on to discuss the prosperous year that 2019 was for H. Krueger & Associates, Andrew shed some light on one of his most recent yacht jobs – adding that no job is too big or small for the firm. “This one is a fairly small refit job – the gentleman just acquired the yacht, he wants to use it mostly with his family, so he just wants it to be updated. He wants it to be clean, elegant and nice.” Touching on the ambiguity of the term ‘nice’, we asked Andrew how much guidance his clients generally give him when it comes to realising their creative vision. “We like to ask questions to see whether they have specific likes and dislikes, but at the same time we love it when a client gives us a little bit of creative leeway where we can come up with some ideas, throw them out there and see how they feel about them. Our most recent client for example just gave us a pretty broad stroke, and then he said ‘I want to see what you guys come up with’ – and that’s awesome, because that’s what we love to do.” We were also interested to know what Andrew made of recent trends in the yachting industry, and how they align with H. Krueger & Associates’ signature style. “Lighting is always a big thing, and I think people are paying more attention to it. With LEDs becoming more popular, you can do some really amazing and interesting lighting effects. That always adds to a more interesting interior. And I’m hoping that things are becoming more sophisticated - I think there has been a propensity for yacht design to be a little too over the top. I’m hoping things will get dialled back a little bit - you can have really elegant design, where you don’t have to go overboard and cover everything in gold!” As mentioned previously, H. Krueger and Associates’ wide portfolio is far from limited to the realm of yachts – spanning everything from residential homes to custom furniture – but there is no doubt that this firm has more than enough experience in the specificities of superyacht design. When it comes to overcoming these very particular challenges, Andrew advised, “Generally it takes a lot of research – we have to make sure the materials we think about using and end up specifying are suitable for the environment. Sometimes the prettiest stuff isn’t necessarily the best when it comes to what will hold up.” Finally, as we look to the year ahead, Andrew is extremely positive for what 2020 has in store for this design house. “It’s always fun to get new jobs, big or small - it invigorates us.”
We would like to wish H. Krueger and Associates the best of luck for this year, for what we are sure will be a yet more prosperous 2020!
On a scale of 0 to 10, how worrying do you find the revelations about Lucasfilm having no idea where the Sequel Trilogy is going?
Not that much. I’m having major flashbacks to the R1 reshoot drama. Sometimes i put my tinfoil hat on and I start to think they intentionally fan the flames to amp up The Drama. Anyway! I’m not worried because Lucasfilm & co doesn’t know where they’re going, I’m worried that they did. Until Carrie Fisher’s death. Scratch that, i’m not worried, I’m bitter.
But first, what I think is that this idea that Lucasfilm doesn’t know where the story or anything is going has more to do with fandom being bitter about the reevaluation of expectations which has become necessary after the new revelations; i’m probably missing some things but:
there’s Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson being evasive about the title [here]
I don’t see how that translate to no-one knowing what the title actually means. I do see two people being close-lipped about that meaning because it would give out huge spoilers. Unlike, say, Lucas giving out the meaning of The Phantom Menace’s title when that movie came out.
there’s the “no one knows about Snoke” thing, a wild extrapolation of this:
Q: Do we learn anything about Snoke’s identity? Does he get a fight scene?
A: I asked Rian Johnson about Snoke—Who/what is he?—and Rian was fairly up front in saying that Snoke is not a character he particularly gets into in TLJ. Hmmm.
From David Kemp’s Reddit Q&A
I’ve commented on that earlier, and again, that’s not particularly surprising nor does it means no one knows who Snoke is. He’s like the final boss, and he’s got three underlings that need be beaten before getting to him. I expect we’ll see him send his underlings on their merry way, and that he’ll fulfill the same narrative function in TLJ he did in TFA, or the Emperor did in ANH and ESB.
there’s the Finn-not-using-a-lightsaber thing
That one… okay at first it kind of rubbed me the wrong way; it’s not the lightsaber that makes a character interesting, you know? But then again, I don’t think the bait-and-switch TFA marketing of picturing him with it everywhere was a good idea at all; it set up expectations, didn’t change much in the long run, and in a franchise in which central protagonists tend to have lightsabers, it doesn’t seem to spell anything good for Finn’s continued co-protagonist role in the story. Add to that the fact that he starts the movie incapacitated, that it’s unclear whether he’ll be reunited with Rey at all during TLJ, and that we know very little of his future storyline…
But I’m relatively hopeful, there; it’s not like we know much of anyone’s storyline for starters, and tbh I always saw Finn becoming more a leader-of-men kind of characters than a Jedi. I never was a fan of the “he resisted indoctrination because he had the Force” explanation as well, and it’s not like there’s tons of lightsabers lying around. It seems like TLJ is going to spread its (expanded) cast across the galaxy, and I don’t doubt Finn will have his own storyline, or that it won’t be a key part of the movie. But I do wonder if TLJ will have less clearly defined main protagonists.
there’s the lack of Han/Leia type romance
Cue despair on one side and gloating on the other. Tbh the most virulent reaction to these quotes I’ve seen comes from the Reylo part of the fandom. I did not dare go to the tag, tho, so that might just be why; still, the fact that #romancegate came on the heels of #boobsgate made the cold shower colder so. There’s a to be made about semantics - it’s not like Reylo was ever slated to become a Han/Leia type of thing, it doesn’t mean there won’t be a romance at all, and it doesn’t mean there won’t be subtext.
And tbh that’s like the least of my worries. I ship it but it’s one of these cases where you like the thing, the fandom less so. In any case, I don’t particularly want a canon romantic relationship, and I never thought TFA telegraphed it either (especially not in light of Abrams’ mystery-boxes-and-red-herrings brand of storytelling). An important relationship, subtext, sure. A future canon romance? No. Not impossible, just unlikely.
What made it all blow over was this:
What the story group does not do, Hart said, is impose plot-point mandates on the filmmakers. Johnson told me he was surprised at how much leeway he was given to cook up the action of Episode VIII from scratch. “The pre-set was Episode VII, and that was kind of it,” he said. If anything, Johnson wanted more give-and-take with the Lucasfilm team, so he moved up to San Francisco for about six weeks during his writing process, taking an office two doors down from Hart’s and meeting with the full group twice a week. (x)
and also this:
Biggest surprise to me is how much creative leeway Lucasfilm is giving Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow to write their films and make up plot and characters from scratch. I had presumed (wrongly) that JJ Abrams and Larry Kasdan might have sketched out an arc for the entirety of the current trilogy. But as Rian Johnson told me, it really was a creative handoff—“Over to you, Rian.” And Rian is handing off to Colin Trevorrow in the same way. He said he’s made a mess that Colin will somehow have to clean up.
David Kemp on reddit Q&A
Which is not new in any way? Look at literally every interview of Kathleen Kennedy or a Story Group member, or X creator about X novel/comic/whatever in the franchise’s new canon, and you’ll find something similar. The Story Group has been relatively open regarding how they function and what they do, and interconnected storytelling or not, the new EU was designed not to constrain the movies. Creative freedom in writing the script and no mandated plot list point doesn’t translate to no input on the scripts once written, no discussion on themes or whatever, and clearly not closing Lucasfilm’s door on Johnson when he asked. (And as far as I know, he’s still credited a co-writer on Episode IX as well? The mystery thickens!)
But mostly, like it or not, it’s not new, and what it means in regards to speculation is usually conveniently forgotten, until something seems to go where we don’t want the story to go. And then it’s brought back, because it totally proves the story going there is a terrible choice made by people who can’t tell a story. Not so long ago, there was great happiness over the fact that Johnson had so much leeway because he was clearly a better storyteller than JJ “Mystery Box” Abrams, and still not much longer ago, there was great happiness about Abrams taking over the story from Lucas because clearly, better storyteller. What can I say, fandom’s fickle.
In any case, I don’t particularly care for the tendency to suddenly find everything terrible and creators dumb idiots who can’t tell a story as soon as there’s a hint things might not go the way we’d want it to. And on some level, I find it darkly hilarious; it’s petty, but I do.
Because Lucasfilm & co knew where they were going. And the fact that they’re not going there anymore is unbearably sad:
Vanity Fair: And as for Episode IX, how mapped out is it?
Kathleen Kennedy: Well, as you can imagine, we were really stunned by the death of Carrie. So we had mapped something out a year ago that [Episode IX writer-director] Colin Trevorrow was working on. In fact, he delivered a script to us in early December. So her death was a real shock, and changed things quite dramatically. (x)
In the Reddit Q&A, Kemp specified he made the interviews between February and April, after Carrie’s death, and repeated that it’d changed the plan as it had existed:
When I was doing these interviews, it was still Feb, March, April, and bear in mind that Carrie Fisher died only on Dec 27—still not that long ago. So it was a little heavy, dealing with people who are grieving but have to get back to work. The original plan was, as Kathleen Kennedy put it, for Episode IX to be “Carrie’s film,” in the sense that VII was Harrison Ford’s film and VIII is Mark Hamill’s film. As I was speaking with Kennedy, she said that Colin Trevorrow and the Lucasfilm Story Group were working on reconceiving the Episode IX script. I don’t think that they would consider recasting the role, and Kennedy seemed emphatic in asserting that they wouldn’t use the tech they used in Rogue One to reanimate Peter Cushing’s Grand Moff Tarkin. I suspect, though I don’t know for sure, that Leia will not appear in Episode IX, and her absence/death will be alluded to in some elegant way.
So imo the real mess would be that Leia was set up in TLJ to have an expanded role in Episode IX. Which is clearly not going to be the case.
I'd love a reading if you'd like to do one! :) I haven't had a reading in a long time so this would be cool!
So I’ve gone for a general past/present/future reading here since you didn’t specify a question or anything, I hope that’s okay. :) I’m a bit rusty myself so if this isn’t 100% accurate I’m really sorry!
Your past card was: Reversed Knave of Cups!
So this card represents a lot of emotional immaturity, perhaps oversensitivity or generally just finding it hard to deal with your emotions. As a result, you might have made some mistakes in your past due to impulse that has been controlled by your emotions. I feel like you may have been pushing people away because you were worried about what they might think of you or your decisions, and you yourself may have had some insecurities with who you are and possibly uncertainty about who you are in general. I feel like your emotions have been manipulated by somebody that you knew, and it made you fragile and helpless, and made you go into your shell for a while in fear of being hurt again.
Something else I’m getting is creative block; creatively you might have struggled to get your thoughts out, in part due to the emotional struggle, or maybe you had to make a decision between a few ideas that were equally as important to you. I feel like creatively you’ve had to make some hard decisions and maybe practicing your hobby generally has made you a bit stressed and emotionally drained.
Your present card is: The Tower Reversed!
The Tower in its reversed state shows that whatever is going on in your life right now, you’re trying very hard to hold it back but you need to accept that whatever’s happening is happening instead of pushing it all away. By trying to ignore your situation you’re just making it worse and it will eventually crash onto you and it will really hurt. By letting yourself go with the flow of the situation and accepting what’s happening, you cushion the hurt and it will give you far better leeway into whatever’s coming next. I feel you have a tendency not to talk about your emotions, and bottle up hurt, and by doing this it will only hit you harder when you can’t hold it back anymore. Think of it like a river with a strong current, you can try to build a dam and block it off but eventually the river will break through and destroy what you built up. The river will always flow, it’s just nature, just like if problems come your way they’re supposed to be there for a reason, it’s part of life and fate, and you need to let it wash over you and then pass.
It’s very likely that you’re scared to accept what’s happening to you and that’s okay; it’s a scary place to be in and it’s hard to let things happen when it’s so easy to just forget about it. You probably know exactly what you need to do, you just need to dig down inside and find te courage to take that step, and make that big change. When you start to believe in yourself and if you keep people around you who are emotionally supportive and willing to help you, it becomes so much easier to change the bad things in your life. It might seem helpless and like you have no way out but you have the inner strength to overcome it, you just have to risk it. Just make sure you don’t wait too long, or it may be too late, and the damage will be bigger than it was in the first place.
Your future card is: Upright Knave of Wands! (Page of Wands)
The Knave of Wands is a very positive card in your life; like The Fool, it represents a free spirit, openly accepting change and going with the flow of life. It shows a willingness to create positive change wherever you go, be it for yourself or others. I feel like this card really is the answer to all of your personal problems - it shows that you need to keep a positive outlook, and an amount of openness to the unknown. It’s scary out there, but it’s also full of awesome, amazing things that you could be experiencing - this card shows that if you find that free spirited nature within yourself you can find the positives in life and be in a better emotional situation. It will help you overcome pain and feel less affected by people’s words or actions.
Creatively, it shows you have this voice waiting to be heard, that you have an idea in your head that you have struggled putting onto paper or into words - this positive, open nature will help you express the ideas in your head in a way that people will love and understand, and you yourself should be proud of. You will be able to start this creative journey with a vivid vision in your head of what you want, and you should be able to execute it. It might not be perfect the first time but you will develop as a person and an artist (be it writing, art, music or anything else) and feel yourself progress. Where you might have felt stuck or unable to continue, you will now be able to see the change in front of you and how much you have improved and developed over time. You might not see the full fruitation of your efforts for months - I expect a year at most - but they will come with patience and effort, and if you can keep practicing and believing in yourself, you will be able to overcome those obstacles stopping you from getting to where you want to be.
My advice is to be open to new things, take risks, and do things you might not have done in the past. Be it a new area of development, going somewhere new, meeting new people, or opening yourself up in a way you never thought you would. Making that leap will help you emotionally and creatively - you might not be the most reserved person in existence, but there is certainly a part of you that I feel is holding you back, perhaps fear of failure or unknown consequences, but by being so concerned you’re keeping yourself from so many opportunities that could have helped you grow as a person. So simply start saying yes, and doing things out of your comfort zone - even if it’s in tiny steps, like taking a different route than you usually take somewhere, talking to someone you’d usually be too scared to, or doing something outrageous with your appearance - you might find you really like it!
We need to talk about 13 Reasons Why.
Tumblr media
13 Reasons Why (2017): Receiving a 9.1 on imdb and bucketloads of media attention, this new Netflix release has earned a place on everyone's ‘to-watch list’ as it seems like we all want to know what the big deal is about a show that retraces the steps of a suicidal 17 year old.
Quick, Non Spoliery Synopsis by Yours Truly:
A 17 year old girl; Hannah Baker organises the circulation of 13 self-recorded tapes before slitting her arms and killing herself in her family bathtub. These tapes make their way through 10 of her friends, ex’s and enemies, each identifying the particular person and their wrongdoing in order, before reaching her shy crush Clay’s doorstep. Her rules say that he must listen to all of the tapes detailing why she killed herself and pass them on to the person who follows him. WIth each tape revealing intimate secrets about Hannah and Clay’s classmates, we follow him in his struggle to understand who this girl really was when she was alive, how she was treated by those she trusted and most importantly; why Hannah Baker killed herself.
Having just binged the whole 13 episodes over two disgustingly wet and cold days with my sister, i think I have a pretty good idea about what goes down.
I hope you’re ready because I’m about to tell you what I think of this story as a teenager in this modern world. And since there are 13 sides to every story I want to tell mine.
I want to be honest here and start off by saying in an almost critical way, that there were a lot of things about this show that I didn’t like at all. I’m not saying that I was forced to watch all 13 episodes against my will, I just think that sometimes there are only a few things that TV shows need to keep you coming back.
Unanswered questions are one of those things, so so many questions which I personally need to have answered by a show, before it slowly drives me insane and I have to look up a spoiler synopsis..
Tumblr media
But who wants to cheat TV shows when you may as well just watch them? Hell, if i can sit through 7 years of the Pretty Little Liars mystery, then I had faith that I could sit through 13 episodes, and I did. My main questions centred around the tapes, specifically; what on earth did Clay do to make him partly ‘responsible’ for Hannah’s death?
So many things to question and discuss but really where to begin?
Let’s put ‘7 things that really grind my gears’(1 for each of the tapes of course) into a list and see how I go before this become a sad, sad rant.
*Disclaimer* I did actually enjoy the show overall so please keep this in mind with what you see below
1: When Clay begins to irk me, the other characters and the entire human species Portrayed by Dylan Minnette, (who believe it or not, has played a character named Clay before, WTF) Clay Jensen is a socially awkward yet well liked student who can hold a place on the school’s honour board yet cannot hold a conversation with a girl. His cringey yet endearing nature promotes him as a lovable protagonist, an innocent light in the darkness of an extremely tough situation. I found myself quite often taking his side in the show and totally rooting for his character.
Despite this, Clay’s loyalty and love for Hannah often poses as quite irritating and almost unrealistic (even if he was a sensitive guy) considering the way she treats him. Throughout the whole debacle, so many accuse Hannah of being dramatic, selfish and attention seeking. Clay however. seems to believe 95% of the time that she was some perfect being who could do no wrong in the world, that the responsibility for killing herself could not have been her own. Of course I am aware of looking at someone through rose coloured glasses when youre keen on them but, to put it bluntly; you’d think that might change when they die.
2: The fact that Clay has like zero close friends yet everyone seems to like him
Everyone who has ever been to high school knows that you need a solid few close friends to bounce back on, who you can trust. There is often a reason therefore that people don’t have any, usually the fact that nobody likes them. This just causes the whole plot idea to make no sense, because everyone at the school seemed to really like Clay. With the exception of Tony who he rarely sees anyway, Clay never had anyone to hang out with before or after school or even at lunchtime, unless of course it was someone he had a ‘school project’ with.
Tumblr media
3: The ‘jock crowd’
So most of the jock crowd, who of course run the school, are in the basketball team and are therefore given a leeway that most students aren’t. It makes complete sense for them to stick together, just as they do in every other US teen drama. Their group dynamic however has a small cult vibe to it  that is simply unsettling. These guys do everything together, support each other in fights, follow each other on their dates and supposedly tell each other everything. For some reason this group also includes the dorky class president and resident sadboi with unmatching hair and eyebrows. Now I’m not disputing that this couldnt happen irl because everyone has the right to befriend whoever they want, it just seems to me that these personalities together would clash. We all know they are together at the ‘present time’ because of the tapes, but for previous times, im just not buying it. Perhaps the writers couldn’t be bothered creating separate groups for each of those targeted on the tapes and introducing more characters into the 13 episodes created.
4: Is there no other girls at Liberty High?????
The jock crowd as specified above hold the place as the most sought after students in the High School yet it seems as though the only girls that exist to them are Hannah and Jessica. What happened to the entire cheer squad or the whole student body? Are these 2 new girls so amazing that no other girl could be considered an option? It seems almost like some game of musical chairs, except the chairs are the boys and Jessica and Hannah end up on a different lap every time the music stops.
5: WHo the fuck does Courtney think she is?
If you got through all 13 episodes without dedicating a split second of anger towards Courtney Crimsen then bravo my friend because this character literally drove me up the wall. Props to actress Michele Ang I suppose because this bitch fired me up real bad. Ever heard of the phrase ‘Dead men tell no tales’ well clearly Courtney disagrees, 100% hell bent on convincing everyone that Hannah was lying in the tapes so that she could continue living in denial of her sexual preference. Continually pushing Hannah onto the dirt road to get hit by whatever was coming her way there is zero surprise that she made her way onto the tapes, the selfish bitch that she is. (Speaking of Courtney) Netflix also needs to be a bit more careful about their wardrobe choices in such a recent Riverdale episode and season release of this show perhaps?
Tumblr media
6: Zach DID NOTHING WRONG
Poor, sweet Zach. A whole episode and tape side that started with just one heated conversation in the cafeteria- where he juST wanted to go on a date with Hannah??? Of course at this point Hannah was not in a good place, so any small prank becomes a national disaster- but how was he to know before she gave him the letter of explanation. A letter which, considering his home and friend situation, he could not go to anyone for help with, especially if he feared that it would be telling Hannah’s secret. Zach really just reacted how 90% of teenagers would; he froze, he didnt know how to act, so he did nothing.
This is what got me about like half of the characters on the tapes, most of them just acted out of fear and didnt know what else to do, yet Hannah seemed to expect so much more from them. Which brings me to my final bullet point on the list;
7: Hannah fucking Baker
Where do I even start? It’s a really touchy subject to address; her character really annoyed me-I guess she really annoyed herself as well, considering her fate. Hannah at the end of the series is completely lost, she’s got so much on her shoulders and believes that there is no other way to turn. But Hannah at the beginning, I couldnt stand her. She had so much going for her yet she let every single obstacle get her down, none of her friends were good enough, all of the boys offended her, every tiny issue became a national disaster. I can’t help but think that if she hadn’t cared so much perhaps she might have found a way to work through her struggles without turning to the last resort. But i get it, this isnt a show about getting through problems and happy endings, it’s all about worse case scenarios. This is why Hannah does and says what she does, so that the situations can be both relatable and believable- for if Hannah gets torn up about high school rumours, then sexual assault and car accidents would be unbearable without professional help. I understand this now as I look at the plot as a whole, but during, oh hell that girl needed a slap into reality. Just watch it, you’ll understand.
Tumblr media
Don’t get me wrong though, there were also a lot of things that I liked about 13 reasons why.
-I loved the cassette tapes; a timeless way of recording and listening to anything, a much appreciated throwback in such a modern show
-I loved Tony who I think we can all agree does not look 17 but I’m not complaining, so sweet and such a good friend/person (and i loved his car of course)
-I loved how sweet and loving Clay was. As an eternally single pringle, my heart leapt for his cute crushing, even if it did become tiring
-I loved the almost vintage feel to the cinematography, the colours and shots almost dulled to the tone
-I loved how the concept of rape was not only addressed, but focused on as well as the idea of consent. Whilst these scenes may have been almost uncomfortable, they were necessary and extremely powerful.
-I loved how the show centered around outsiders, the quiet and socially awkward, the unusual characters and their interaction with the well known highschool stereotypes.
-Most of all, I loved how the show displayed how suicide destroys so many more than the person who died. Friends and family may never recover, forever question what they could have done differently, some also led to further suicides.
Tumblr media
It’s a hard topic but I am so glad that it is being talked about, even if there are disagreements because at least it is now out in the open. I personally believe that suicide is an incredibly selfish act which I understand that many people could disagree with.  I get it, I’ve never stepped into shoes like that and that’s fine, but i know for sure that if anyone in my life chose to end theirs then it would absolutely destroy me- just as the strongly portrayed characters were torn apart.
Let me know what you think.
Medical Marijuana For ADHD
At the Peace in Medicine Healing Center in Sebastopol, the wares on display include dried marijuana - featuring brands like Kryptonite, Voodoo Daddy and Train Wreck - and medicinal cookies arrayed below a sign saying, "Keep Out of Reach of Your Mother."
Several Bay Area doctors who recommend medical marijuana for their patients said in recent interviews that their client base had expanded to include teenagers with psychiatric conditions including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
"It's not everybody's medicine, but for some, it can make a profound difference," said Valerie Corral, a founder of the Wo/Men's Alliance for Medical Marijuana, a patients' collective in Santa Cruz that has two dozen minors as registered clients.
Because California does not require doctors to report cases involving medical marijuana, no reliable data exist for how many minors have been authorized to receive it. But Dr. Jean Talleyrand, who founded MediCann, a network in Oakland of 20 clinics who authorize patients to use the drug, said his staff members had treated as many as 50 patients ages 14 to 18 who had A.D.H.D. Bay Area doctors have been at the forefront of the fierce debate about medical marijuana, winning tolerance for people with grave illnesses like terminal cancer and AIDS. Yet as these doctors use their discretion more liberally, such support - even here - may be harder to muster, especially when it comes to using marijuana to treat adolescents with A.D.H.D.
"How many ways can one say 'one of the worst ideas of all time?' " asked Stephen Hinshaw, the chairman of the psychology department at the University of California, Berkeley. He cited studies showing that tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, disrupts attention, memory and concentration - functions already compromised in people with the attention-deficit disorder.
Advocates are just as adamant, though they are in a distinct minority. "It's safer than aspirin," Dr. Talleyrand said. He and other marijuana advocates maintain that it is also safer than methylphenidate (Ritalin), the stimulant prescription drug most often used to treat A.D.H.D. That drug has documented potential side effects including insomnia, depression, facial tics and stunted growth.
In 1996, voters approved a ballot proposition making California the first state to legalize medical marijuana. Twelve other states have followed suit - allowing cannabis for several specified, serious conditions including cancer and AIDS - but only California adds the grab-bag phrase "for any other illness for which marijuana provides relief."
This has left those doctors willing to "recommend" cannabis - in the Alice-in-Wonderland world of medical marijuana, they cannot legally prescribe it - with leeway that some use to a daring degree. "You can get it for a backache," said Keith Stroup, the founder of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.
Nonetheless, expanding its use among young people is controversial even among doctors who authorize medical marijuana.
Gene Schoenfeld, a doctor in Sausalito, said, "I wouldn't do it for anyone under 21, unless they have a life-threatening problem such as cancer or AIDS."
Dr. Schoenfeld added, "It's detrimental to adolescents who chronically use it, and if it's being used medically, that implies chronic use."
Dr. Nora D. Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, said she was particularly worried about the risk of dependency - a risk she said was already high among adolescents and people with attention-deficit disorder.
Counterintuitive as it may seem, however, patients and doctors have been reporting that marijuana helps alleviate some of the symptoms, particularly the anxiety and anger that so often accompany A.D.H.D. The disorder has been diagnosed in more than 4.5 million children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Researchers have linked the use of marijuana by adolescents to increased risk of psychosis and schizophrenia for people genetically predisposed to those illnesses. However, one 2008 report in the journal Schizophrenia Research suggested that the incidence of mental health problems among adolescents with the disorder who used marijuana was lower than that of nonusers.
Marijuana is "a godsend" for some people with A.D.H.D., said Dr. Edward M. Hallowell, a psychiatrist who has written several books on the disorder. However, Dr. Hallowell said he discourages his patients from using it, both because it is - mostly - illegal, and because his observations show that "it can lead to a syndrome in which all the person wants to do all day is get stoned, and they do nothing else."
Until the age of 18, patients requesting medical marijuana must be accompanied to the doctor's appointment and to the dispensaries by a parent or authorized caregiver. Some doctors interviewed said they suspected that in at least some cases, parents were accompanying their children primarily with the hope that medical authorization would allow the adolescents to avoid buying drugs on the street.
A recent University of Michigan study found that more than 40 percent of high school students had tried marijuana.
"I don't have a problem with that, as long as we can have our medical conversation," Dr. Talleyrand said, adding that patients must have medical records to be seen by his doctors.
The Medical Board of California began investigating Dr. Talleyrand in the spring, said a board spokeswoman, Candis Cohen, after a KGO-TV report detailed questionable practices at MediCann clinics, which, the report said, had grossed at least $10 million in five years.
Dr. Talleyrand and his staff members are not alone in being willing to recommend marijuana for minors - weed shop online . In Berkeley, Dr. Frank Lucido said he was questioned by the medical board but ultimately not disciplined after he authorized marijuana for a 16-year-old boy with A.D.H.D. who had tried Ritalin unsuccessfully and was racking up a record of minor arrests.
Within a year of the new treatment, he said, the boy was getting better grades and was even elected president of his special-education class. "He was telling his mother: 'My brain works. I can think,' " Dr. Lucido said.
"With any medication, you weigh the benefits against the risks," he added.
Even so, MediCann patients who receive the authorization must sign a form listing possible downsides of marijuana use, including "mental slowness," memory problems, nervousness, confusion, "increased talkativeness," rapid heartbeat, difficulty in completing complex tasks and hunger. "Some patients can become dependent on marijuana," the form also warns.
The White House's recent signals of more federal tolerance for state medical marijuana laws - which pointedly excluded sales to minors - reignited the debate over medical marijuana.
Some advocates, like Dr. Lester Grinspoon, an associate professor emeritus of psychiatry at Harvard University, suggest that medical marijuana's stigma has less to do with questions of clinical efficacy and more to do with its association, in popular culture, with illicit pleasure and addiction.
Others, like Alberto Torrico of Fremont, the majority leader of the California Assembly, argue for more oversight in general. "The marijuana is a lot more powerful these days than when we were growing up, and too much is being dispensed for nonmedical reasons," he said in an interview last week, bluntly adding, "Any children being given medical marijuana is unacceptable."
As advocates of increased acceptance try to win support, they may find their serious arguments compromised by the dispensaries' playful atmosphere.
OrganiCann, a dispensary in Santa Rosa, has a Web site advertisement listing the "medible of the week" - butterscotch rock candy - invitingly photographed in a gift box with a ribbon. OrganiCann also offers a 10 percent discount, every Friday, for customers with a valid student ID.
Selling Homemade Food: Laws and Considerations
Cottage food law is the legal permission or ban on selling homemade food. And it’s gotten a lot of attention lately. Within the past few years, states have either tightened or loosened their laws concerning who can sell their breads, pickles, and jellies; and the ways they can go about doing it.
Fundraisers and farmers markets abound. Talented people with little funding consider small craft business ideas to bring in extra money. Items such as potholders, crocheted baby afghans, paintings and jewelry beckon from portable tables. But the booths selling homemade food draw the most attention. Customers return often to purchase bread from a homemaker who stayed up until 3 a.m. the night before.
Home cooks develop incredible recipes. Friends claim they should sell their products, but the cooks have small children, other jobs, or lack the funds to pay for licensing and commercial kitchens. Some don’t want to run large operations or leave children with babysitters. They just want enough money to help with the bills.
Making and selling homemade food used to be easy. Roadside stands even offered freshly made pies and pastries. But laws tightened up, either outlawing the sale of home-crafted food completely, mandating that it come from a commercial kitchen, or restricting it to nonprofit fundraisers. Thankfully, laws have recently loosened. If you plan on selling homemade food, it’s important to know why the laws exist and what they mean for your specific area and kitchen.
Heartaches and Good Intentions
Just before Lent, in 2009, St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Pennsylvania held a fish-fry fundraiser. Pie slices sold for $1 apiece: Mary Pratte’s famous coconut cream pie, Louise Humbert’s raisin pie, and Marge Murtha’s “farm apple” pie. Then a state health inspector came in and declared the pies could not be sold. Everyone was devastated. These fish fries were a highly anticipated tradition. According to the inspector, the pies would be fine if they had come from the church’s kitchen because that establishment had been inspected. But the bakers were all elderly and some were disabled. Making it to the church kitchen to prepare enough for the fish fry would be impossible. All the bakers had donated materials and time for a good cause, to be turned down because they didn’t have inspected appliances.
When other parishes heard the news, they circulated the instruction: “Don’t tell anyone.” Fish fries provided revenue to fix leaky roofs and subsidize tuition for parochial schools. They depended on their baked goods for cafeterias to keep costs down.
Many claimed that the ladies’ kitchens were probably cleaner than most commercial operations. Others felt it was unfair to make Grandma’s pies illegal. The incident became known as “Pie Gate” and it sparked new considerations regarding Pennsylvania’s cottage food laws. Around that time, other states reconsidered laws that banned selling homemade food.
Definition of Cottage Food Law
Cottage food is the bread, pickles, candy, syrups, and other delicious items homesteaders can craft in their kitchens. The “cottage” part denotes that it comes from an individual or family whose operation is too small to afford licensing. Cottage food law defines exactly how they can sell it for profit. The rules apply to low-risk foods, such as jams or baked goods, which carry little risk of botulism or listeria. Foods with higher risks must follow strict licensing procedures.
Why Laws on Selling Homemade Food Exist
Public health is a huge concern. Regional departments conduct surprise inspections within restaurants to avoid poisoning unassuming customers. They control what type of appliances can cook the food, specific times and temperatures, and overall cleanliness of kitchens, bathrooms, and dining areas. Food created within home kitchens has no such supervision. And as cooks familiar with food preservation methods know, tragedy can strike from mistakes as simple as not adding acid to tomatoes. Acidic foods preserved in the best canning jars may be fine while those improperly bottled can cause illness.
If local health codes apply to all kitchens, cooks selling homemade food have no chance. Inspections and food handlers’ licenses would take all the money that selling homemade food would even generate.
But there’s a line of mercy within the legal system. Cottage food laws give small producers a chance. They don’t give freedom to sell all types of homemade food, and cooks can only sell at certain venues. But the laws make it possible to sell something.
What Can You Sell and Where
Selling homemade food is not legal everywhere. New Jersey bans it completely, but the legislature has been trying to get laws passed for a while. Idaho has no cottage food law so rules vary by health district to allow baked goods, honey, jams, and jellies. Wisconsin only allows sales at events and farmers markets, and it’s one of the few states banning baked goods.
Items sold under cottage food laws are exempt from local licensing and codes. Because of this, only certain sales are legal. The best indication of what food is allowed under a cottage food law is safety. Foods susceptible to botulism, such as low-acid vegetables, are outlawed pretty much everywhere. The most acceptable foods include jams and jellies, pickles canned in vinegar, and baked goods. Though that can vary state by state.
Meat is generally not allowed because of widespread health concerns. Most farmers wanting to sell meat to the public must have it USDA-inspected or offer programs where consumers purchase animals and pay for butchering costs. Some foods such as cheeses fall beneath both cottage food laws and state bans on the sale of raw milk, if the cheese has been produced from a farmer’s own dairy animals. Even dairy products made from store-purchased pasteurized milk require special licensing.
Fruits and vegetables grown in a home garden do not require special licensing as long as they have not been cut or altered in any way. Some states allow cooks to include home-grown produce in cottage food but not all do. Still, other states do not allow home-canned products, such as fruits or vegetables, within cottage food.
To check out your cottage food laws, see the Forrager website or look up your state’s individual health code. Forrager and health department sites detail where selling homemade food is allowed and what types of food you may sell. They will also detail the maximum revenue you can make per year. Forrager includes an FAQ page which details how labels must be written, whether foods can be sold across state lines, or whether maximum sales include gross or net profits.
How Cottage Food Laws Benefit You
These laws are made for individuals, not businesses, though some states allow for farm operations to open up stores beneath the same regulations. Individuals tend to oversee their products better. E. coli and salmonella within large meat-processing plants proves that the larger an operation becomes, the higher chance for food-borne illness, though those operations are well licensed and inspected. When millions of cookies roll down a conveyor belt per hour, handled by dozens of employees, it’s easy to make mistakes such as unwashed hands or unsanitized counters. Each employee hired increases the risks.
Cottage food laws also protect sales between individuals and strangers. If your best friend purchases from you, she probably already knows the condition of your kitchen. By following labeling rules and listing every ingredient, consumers feel more comfortable purchasing from you. Consumer-to-producer interactions build community relationships. Soon customers return to at-home bakers they trust.
The best places for selling homemade food are farmers markets, farm stands, and places such as craft fairs where consumers purchase directly from whoever cooks the food. Items baked at home generally cannot sell within stores or restaurants unless the home kitchen has been certified. Some states allow the sale of food via the internet, such as candies and jellies. Others allow customers to purchase directly from your home.
Money earned by selling homemade food varies state by state. Wisconsin’s sales cap is $5,000 per year but Virginia has no sales limit and allows distribution within retail stores and restaurants.
Encouraging New Laws
Questions and decisions still exist, even among states that have enacted the laws. How big is too big to fit within a cottage food law? Facilities which hire employees are large enough to pay for additional licensing and commercial kitchens. Income caps ensure that cottage operations indeed need financial leeway. Alternative considerations for in-between kitchens may be fee waivers or discounted commercial space. This brings the larger operations into compliance without harming the very small venues.
The movement for changing cottage food laws has been on the upswing since 2010. Most changes have taken place in the past five years. This means there is hope for states that do not allow selling homemade food.
Addressing your local lawmakers encourages them to change matters for the better. Tell your legislature how most new laws mandate labels specifying that food was made in an unlicensed kitchen. Labels detailing exactly which ingredients compose the food allow consumers to make wise choices at farmer’s markets. Make the claim that larger food operations, such as meat-processing plants, have a much higher rate of food-borne illness because of the increased volume and lack of oversight.
Find stories and information about how these small sales affect nonprofit organizations, school fundraisers, or family farms creating value-added products. St. Cecilia Catholic Church isn’t the only one losing revenue when Grandma’s pies are illegal.
By encouraging and utilizing cottage food laws, small-scale suppliers or homesteaders can generate modest revenue by selling homemade food or donate to fundraisers without legal repercussions.
How to Negotiate Your Next New-Car Lease Like a Pro
Car salespeople will tell you that most people who end up leasing a new vehicle don’t walk through the door thinking of themselves as lease customers. Rather, like proposals on New Year’s Eve, leasing often just kind of happens, and the person has to live with the consequences of a spontaneous decision. The information here is intended to help you make good decisions as you negotiate a lease, so you can live happily ever after with your new vehicle.
We’ll avoid debating the overall desirability of leasing versus buying in this article, instead assuming that a two- or three-year lease term is a given and focusing on getting on a lease that is as financially advantageous as it can be.
Indeed, a rational, step-by-step approach to vehicle leasing is fairly rare in the typical dealership, but talking with veteran car dealers proved that it’s even rarer than we thought. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a thing in a dealership,” said Donald Fuller, a former car salesperson who has provided sales training to thousands of new-car dealerships. “I’ve seen a customer and a sales manager roll dice to settle a deal, but I’ve never seen a lease customer make a step-by-step effort to negotiate a lease.”
With that in mind, here are the steps you should follow to get the best deal on a lease.
Find and Examine a Deal
First, you should determine if there is a special lease offer on the vehicle you want. This shouldn’t take CSI-style detective work, because car manufacturers, dealer associations, and individual dealers usually scream such lease deals from the rooftops. Ads for such deals will most often feature an eye-poppingly low monthly payment in large type and are intended to get you excited about stepping into a vehicle you didn’t think you could afford.
But before you take the next step, examine the deal with these questions in mind:
Does the vehicle that qualifies for the special deal have the equipment you want?
Do the terms of the deal offer you sufficient miles per year to meet your needs?
Is there an upfront payment required, and, if so, how large is it?
If for whatever reason you didn’t find the special deal to be all that special, you should see about negotiating one that is. During negotiations, focus on the price of the vehicle, the price of the financing (yes, leasing is “financing”), and the overall mileage limit.
Price of Vehicle
In the arcane patois that surrounds leasing, the price of the vehicle is called the capitalized cost, often shortened to “cap cost.” It stands to reason that if you negotiate the price of the vehicle down, the monthly payment and the overall cost of the vehicle lease should also go down. The trouble is, as Fuller told us,  “Most consumers are payment shoppers, so they only look at the monthly payment.” Rather than agree to a lower purchase price, the dealership typically lengthens the payment period to bring down the monthly payment, which is how a 36-month lease can become a 39- or even 48-month lease.
But you can negotiate the cap cost downward, and it is to your benefit to do so, because that is what the financial institution acquiring the vehicle from the dealership will pay for the car. Negotiating this price downward is valuable because it narrows the gap between the purchase price and the residual value—the amount the vehicle will be worth when the lease ends. Since that period of usage is the portion of the car you are buying—day one through the day the lease term ends—that’s what you pay for when you lease.  A lower cap cost should lead to a lower monthly payment, all other things being equal.
Price of Financing
Another item worthy of negotiation is the price of the financing, which typically boils down to an interest rate on the lease. In a purchase, the interest rate is expressed as a simple percentage such as 4.5 percent. But in the alternate universe of leasing, it is usually embedded in the “lease factor,” otherwise known as the “money factor.” The money factor is expressed as a number such as .00225 or, even more confusingly, by moving the decimal point between the third and fourth digits, so 2.25. You might think this means the interest rate is 2.25 percent, but it isn’t. To convert the money factor to an equivalent annual interest percentage rate (APR), the decimal is always multiplied by 2400. In the example where the money factor is .00225, the math indicates the APR is 5.4 percent. You’ll probably need to get your salesperson to tell you what the factor is, as it is not required to be disclosed on the lease worksheet.
Now you can do quick research on finance websites to see where interest rates currently sit. Having a working knowledge of market interest rates will enable you to determine if the money factor/interest rate you are being offered is competitive or completely out of line.
Mileage Limit
The third item open for negotiation is the mileage limit. This is the maximum number of miles you can put on the vehicle before you begin paying a penalty. It makes sense to specify a mileage limit, because the lessor (the financial institution funding the lease) needs to have a good idea of the value of the vehicle when the lease is over. That value is the “residual value,” literally the value that is left, and it is often called just “the residual.” If you opt for a low-mileage lease—say 10,000 miles per year—the residual value will be higher than if you opt to include 15,000 miles per year, so the monthly payment should be lower. But if you underestimate the miles you will drive, you will end up in a situation where you will pay a per-mile penalty on the total over the agreed-upon limit.
“Customers typically overlook the mileage limit,” Fuller told us. “They sign up for 10,000 miles a year or 12,000 miles a year without ever thinking about how many miles they will actually drive.” That can prove to be a major mistake, as the penalty per mile can add up quickly.
Checklist
With the above in mind, here’s a quick checklist:
If there exists a special deal on a car you want with the equipment you want that has an appropriate mileage limit and either no lease acquisition cost or a manageable one, you may want to proceed. You have won the lease equivalent of the lottery.
If that is not the case, negotiate on the purchase price—the cap cost—as if you were going to buy the car for cash.
Negotiate the interest rate (money factor) on the lease to a level appropriate to current market interest rates. During the negotiation process, be sure the calculations are always using one lease term—36 months, for example—so that you are comparing apples to apples. Compare interest rates and then examine the commensurate monthly payments.
Make certain the mileage limit is a number you can comfortably live within even if your life changes. Give yourself some leeway without grossly overestimating the number of miles you will drive.
Understand what the residual value of the vehicle has been set at in the lease contract. You don’t have much wiggle room on negotiating this number because it is established by experts in predicting residuals, but knowing it will help you understand the entirety of the deal. Also, when the lease ends you typically have the right to buy the car at the residual value.
How to Negotiate Your Next New-Car Lease Like a Pro
-
Car salespeople will tell you that most people who end up leasing a new vehicle don’t walk through the door thinking of themselves as lease customers. Rather, like proposals on New Year’s Eve, leasing often just kind of happens, and the person has to live with the consequences of a spontaneous decision. The information here is intended to help you make good decisions as you negotiate a lease, so you can live happily ever after with your new vehicle.
