...Every now and then it's good to revisit this, and consider how rare it is for an art form to just abruptly be dragged into a new century in front of a significant portion of the planet.
A lovely battle between Basque dance association Oinak Arin from Beskoitze (Lapurdi) and the Irish dancers of the Gohery school of dancing. Filmed last summer.
The Basque and the Irish sharing our special connection again!
I am an Irish Dance teacher in the United States, and at the beginning of December, a transgender girl won first place at her regional competition, which qualified her to attend the world championships in the spring. Unfortunately, there is a lot of hate going around and she is facing a lot of harassment. They even had to remove her entire competitions results from where they were previously posted so people would stop seeking her out and harassing her. Transphobes have even started a petition to the CLRG (one of the two major Irish dance organizations which I and this girl are both a part of) demanding they create separate competitions for transgender people.
Up until this point, it has been CLRG's policy to let dancers compete in whatever category they're comfortable in, and that shouldn't be changed because some transphobes got butt-hurt that this 14 year old girl was a beautiful dancer and won.
If y'all can share this counter petition I found, I would greatly appreciate it. She needs some support right now, and I don't want something that has meant so much to me all my life to be torn apart by transphobes.
honestly it made no fucking sense that people were trying to change this rule anyway and anyone who knows anything about irish dance and isn't a raging bigot could give you half a dozen reasons why but i'm glad CLRG has not given in to the bigots and has kept this rule inclusive
This December a trans teen girl won the regional championship and it caused quite a stir. Especially because it was the region in which I used to dance and compete so quite a few people I knew showed their whole ass. I guess the upside is I now know who the transphobes are.
Anyway, the whole thing was a steaming pile of bullshit because the veil behind which the “protect girls in sports” crowd hide is even thinner. Dancers are only separated by gender in “majors” so in local comps they are only split by age and level. And dancing in the girls category puts you at a severe statistical disadvantage. Girls age groups in my region usually had around 90 dancers, boys had like 9 and would get handed a world qualifying placement by showing up.
Would love to see the mental gymnastics of these folks saw a trans boy win. “That’s an unfair advantage dancing in the smaller boy groups!” “But you just said that AMAB dancers have an advantage over AFAB?”
might have found an Irish dance school that I can attend cuz all the classes are virtual and lessons are sent via videos once a week and get feedback by recording a video dancing and sending the video back
the teacher is based in Oklahoma but anyone in the world can sign up since in-person classes aren't required... it's only $25 a month so it's not too bad and over 18+ dancers are welcome to join 😊😊😊
omg I'm excited about this! I get to dance again 😭😭 it's been almost 6 years since I took classes... I just have to move the stuff around in the basement so I have space to dance in
hopefully this is a permanent thing cuz I don't think I'll be ok if I have to quit for the 5th time
I took some inspiration from the work of Zarah Abraham, but working first on a smaller scale.
In competitive Irish dance it’s imports that the upper body stays ridged and dose not move and so I decided to only paint the movement of the legs rather then the whole body. I also tried to paint the eggs as tho the were fading away the further away from the main figure they got
