It’s more like dancing than fighting, that’s why it’s extremely common in movies. It’s flashy and fun to watch, but most of the time you don’t actually touch your opponent.

This is BJJ:

It’s ground wrestling and actual full contact fighting. You’re not supposed to punch and kick and stuff, but in MMA(mixed martial arts) you’re allowed to. It’s not flashy, and 90% of the time it looks like a cartoon dust cloud to the untrained eye.

Listening to Ryan Coogler's director's commentary on Wakanda Forever on that vicious-ass Bridge Fight. Some comments:

There's not much on the Okoye/Attuma interactions. It'a mostly all about their first fight, which was one of the hardest to film since they're legit really going at each other and you can't CGI that sort of thing (save backgrounds)

-The concept of Attuma circling his warriors as they take on Okoye (and get they ass beat) is from a scene in a David Mamet directed movie called Red Belt, where Chiwetel Ejiofor circles around his jiu jitsu students and gives them pointers as they fight each other.

-It's all about running the characters through combat since there's a language barrier between them. So this is how they communicate with each other, through action.

-It's all about Okoye's toughness. They really wanted to put her through it.

-When Okoye gets whipped into the handle of Attuma's scythe and it dislocates her shoulder? The stunt is called called a Dead Man Hit and is pretty hard and dangerous to do. Kudos to Danai's stunt double. And yeah, that was supposed to look that brutal.

-Most of the time, the Talokanil rebreathers and the water in them were CGI. Though Attuma taking his off to give to Shuri is a practical effect with a rebreather prop and real water in it.

Hi Beller [starts beating you up] Thanks for the Ask- I've already answered the question somewhat in a previous ask (I should probably make a Masterlist) however Bc I like answering asks I'll actually expand more on it since there's new ideas for them

Honestly? If they aren't on cleaning duty for doing stupid shit, They would be doing stupid shit LMAO-

They would go on walks to look for stuff on the ground, "Five cool rocks/leaves, then we go home" type of deal.

Sparring if they're on base, Nak is really good at Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu while Krueger's fighting style is probably Boxing/Street Adjacent. I feel like they're pretty even despite Krueger having the height and weight advantage?

Snuggling, Self explanatory, sometimes they're too tired to do anything so they just cuddle and talk.

Watching Movies at home. Nak didn't watch alot of movies growing up other than like Disney and such when she was 8-10, so they put one on to just talk during it like;

-Pointing at the screen, "You like that guy?"

-"No, he's an ass. "

-chuckling"He's Handsome, No? He looks like me."

-"Why don't you like him?"

Writing Fight Scenes Part 7 - Basic Ground-fighting Terminology

So a lot of what you see in movies is (bedazzled, unrealistic) stand-up fighting/sparring that involves things like punches and kicks. But the reality is, most fights don't remain 'on their feet.' In this post, I'm going to talk about why most realistic fights go to the ground, the goals of ground-fighting, and some basic terminology

Before that, I should mention that I am going to be speaking from a grappling perspective. Grappling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are very similar martial arts, the main difference being the fact that bjj is usually performed while wearing a gi. I've always found this impractical, as many of the submissions (I'll explain this term in a minute) that rely on clothing are difficult to execute if a character's opponent is wearing civilian clothing

Importance of grappling

Above all else, a character who is good at fighting will know how to grapple because it is far easier to fall than it is to stand back up. A character loses their footing? Gets tackled/tripped? Catches a fist to the face? They're going to the ground. On the other hand, once a character is on the ground, their opponent might not be so kind as to allow them back to their feet. So, what do they do?

Goals of grappling

Returning to standing position

Like I just said, it's quite hard for a character to come back to their feet after they've hit the ground, but it can be done. A character would want to 1. Create space from their opponent, 2. Move quickly (to avoid giving their opponent the chance to stop them) and 3. Protect their head, especially if their opponent is still on their feet

Pummeling/TKO/Knockout

TKO, by the way, stands for 'technical knockout,' and describes an instance where an opponent is deemed unable to fight back even while conscious, usually due to an incessant beating. If two characters are grappling, one can maneuver into a favorable position (like sitting on the chest) and just beat the shit out of the other. This is great if you have a more brutish character because the most technical part is getting into a good position

Submission

These are a little trickier to describe, because there's a lot of them. The goal of a submission is to either force an opponent to submit (no shit, right?) or to forcibly stop a fight by knocking them unconscious/breaking something. The two main categories are chokes and breaks

Chokes:

Blood chokes - these aren't as scary as they sound. They target the veins/arteries on either side of the throat to stop the flow of blood to the brain. They take hold pretty quickly but typically don't hurt at all, unless you pass out I guess

Air chokes - these are illegal in the ufc, because you can easily do damage to the throat structures. As you might guess, your character is just squeezing the hell out of the actual column of an opponent's throat. Also, they take longer to set in. Only let your character perform an air choke if they're a massive cunt/out for blood

Breaks:

This is actually another umbrella term. In reality, there are actual breaks, and then dislocations, hyperextensions, cranks/bars, and some that fall into multiple categories

Breaks - you guessed it, your character breaks bone. The most common ones are wrist, arm, elbow and knee (these two also fall into the hyperextension category), leg and ankle breaks. I've broken too many of my own bones to enjoy writing OR reading these, so

Dislocations - again, pretty self-explanatory. Shoulder and knee dislocations take precedence. Gross

Hyperextensions - mostly elbows and knees. Disgusting

Cranks/bars - this is the one I think I need to explain the most. Cranks aim to fuck up muscles, tendons and ligaments by wrenching joints beyond their normal mobilities. I see the most shoulder and knee cranks. Whump writers, you'll love these because you can go slow, drag it out. That being said, if you make me read that, I will show up in your backyard

Basic Terminology

So I already got some terms out of the way, but grappling is a whole different world than stand-up fighting. Have y'all ever heard 'jiu jitsu is gay' jokes? They're right actually

Rolling - the actual act of grappling with someone, usually for practice. It is NOT out of the ordinary for a character who does martial arts to say to their buddy, 'hey, you wanna roll?'

Clinch - 'the clinch' is kind of an intermediary stage between stand-up fighting and grappling wherein a character and their opponent are still on their feet, but they're holding onto each other. It kinda looks like a dynamic hug tbh, but really, they're fighting for a more advantageous position, so that a given character can knock their opponent to the ground

Mount - one character is flat on their back while the other straddles their chest. Ideally, the character on top (dominant position) would either sit high on their opponent's chest/collarbones, or they would sit directly on the diaphragm and squeeze with their knees

Guard - one character is flat on their back with their legs crossed around the other character's torso, who has their knees slightly spread for balance. The character on the bottom has the advantage if they can trap and pull their opponent's face to their chest, and cross their ankles high on their opponent's back. Conversely, the character on top has the advantage if they can sit up as straight as possible

Half-guard - think scissoring, almost. One character on their back/side and one sitting/kneeling upright, each with one of the other's legs crossed between their own. Same rules for advantage as guard. I don't really like this position because I don't like having my legs tangled up, it's too easy for my opponent to try a knee bar

Side control - one character flat on their back (preferably with their knees bent upwards) and the other laying on them perpendicularly, face-down. The idea here is to be as heavy as possible, to stop the character on the bottom from moving. Female characters want to press using the weight of their hips, male characters want to press using the weight of their chest; to trap a female character, lay closer to the hips, and to trap a male character, lay on the chest.

Rear mount - actually not as terrible as it sounds! Both characters on their asses, one behind the other with their arms wrapped around the torso/the ankles hooked behind the knees. DO NOT let your character cross their ankles when they are the one behind, holding their opponent. It is an EXCELLENT way to end up with broken legs (don't worry abt why)

North-south - ...69. I hate this one too, it's way too easy to get my knee fucked with

I hope this was helpful, and if not helpful, at least amusing. I guess the idea of this post was to give you some key words to google, in case you want to do more in-depth research (i.e you want your character to perform a cool submission but have no idea where to start looking)

ARE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE?: Not as far as I know (i like to believe I'm named after a character feom "Pippi Longstockings" but i know I'm not) If, for some reason, i don't want to tell someone my given name I tend to use names of characters I played in a ttrpg or in a play (my favourite name is Valentine from Twelth Night) if that counts?

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU CRIED?: Monday, from 8pm until 10:30pm, with some breaks (i had a bit of an exhausting week with a lot of bottled up emotions and rehearsing for a play in which sickness, death and loneliness are prominent topics is both cathartic and very hard sometimes)

DO YOU HAVE KIDS?: Nope

WHAT SPORTS DO YOU PLAY/HAVE YOU PLAYED?: i used to play handball (hated it), vaulting (loved it), track and field athletics (hated it), hip hop dancing (it was fun i guess but i also felt incredibly awkward), Judo (loved it), Jiu Jitsu (loved it). Now I dance (for the theatre but I'll still count it) and go running sometimes and very rarely I do some sword fighting with a friend (i feel like I'm missing something but i dont remember anything else)

Soccer! I played soccer a lot as a kid, I used to about a year ago but I'm not very competitive (unless it's something I'm actually good at) and if you consider martial arts as a sport because I did Jiu Jitsu!

Today, the guys were on "The Tonight Show starting Jimmy Fallon," but you couldn't make it, or so they thought.

"Guys the movie is great. It's really, really, an amazing movie. It's exactly what you hope it would be." Jimmy Fallon says to the guys after they all sit down.

"Thank you." Henry replies in his cunning British accent

"And you do a great job in it," Jimmy continues "and Johanna does a great job in it."

"Joey was amazing." Chris says smiling as he thinks of you.

"Yeah she is." Jimmy agrees "I heard that the 3 of you are really close."

*Chris grins to himself knowing that Jimmy has no idea how close you guys actually are*

"Yeah." Henry agrees smiling

"And you do a lot of stuff together."

*holding back a laugh* "yeah," Chris answers "yeah. I guess you could say that."

Jimmy holds up a picture of Joey and Henry dressed in kimonos. Joey has him pinned down to a mat. Henry appears to be in distress. 

Jimmy laughs "what's going on here."

*Chris cracks up. Left boob grab and all*

Henry chuckles as he answers "Jiu-jitsu. She wanted a new challenge so I brought her to my instructor and this is what happened."

"W-w-w-w wait, wait," Jimmy hold up his hand "this is her first day?"

*Chris laughs harder.*

Henry scratches his head "maybe the fourth or fifth day. But definitely towards the beginning."

Jimmy just looks at him. "Dude she's half your size."

Henry chuckles "she's really good."

"Hang on. I've got another one." Jimmy pulls out a picture of you in boxing gloves hitting a punching bag. Chris is in the background with a bloody nose.

*Chris laughs even harder* "I was hoping you wouldn't have that one."

*Henry grins as he looks at the photograph*

"What did she hit you or something?" Jimmy laughs

*Chris nods and squeezes his eyes shut from how hard he's laughing.*

"He wanted a sparring partner" Henry answers for him "and she's got a mean left hook"

*jimmy touches his forehead*

"Isn't she right handed?" Jimmy asks

*Chris bends over and slaps his knee* "yes"

"so she gave you a bloody nose with her left hand and then continued to punch the bag for a picture?"

*Henry grins* "yes"

*jimmy cracks up*

"Anything for the audience right?" Henry says

*the crowd goes wild*

*Chris finally gets himself together* "look at the muscle on that chick." Chris says referring to the picture "she's wicked strong"

"I'd say. She bested Captain America and Superman." Jimmy says.

"You don't understand. Joey is a different breed." Henry explains dramatically "Not only is she in amazing shape and a fast learner, but she is incredibly intelligent. She is a real life superhuman."

"Seriously," Chris starts with an unusually thick Boston accent. "They should be making movies about her." 

*the crowd awwwwhh's.* 

"You guys are really sweet." Jimmy says "I bet you wish she was here."

*Out of view of Chris and Henry, you sneak across the stage making hushing noises at the crowd.*

"totally." Chris answers. "Joey makes everything better." 

*you wait until Chris reaches for his glass of water and has it pressed against his lips to yell.*

"CHRIS!" You scream making Henry jump in his seat. Water shoots out of Chris's nose. Jimmy laughs so hard that he hits the table. 

"you scared me." Henry says as he stands hug you. "My heart is pounding."

Chris laughs as he collects himself. He sets the glass down and stands to greet you as well. He places a kiss on your cheek. "You got me good Haywood. I've gotta hand it to you." He helps you around the couch to take a seat beside him. "But I'm gonna get you back for that."

"Yeah. We'll see about that." You say back to him as you cross your legs. 

"Johanna. It’s so nice of you to join us." Jimmy says talking really fast as he usually does.

"Thank you for having me." You say very politely as you cheese at Jimmy and scan the crowd as they have not finished cheering about your arrival.

"You seem to be in a really good mood today," Jimmy says as he sees you shift in your seat.

You look over to Chris who is looking down at his now soaked shirt. "I am! I'm really excited to be here and I think it's hilarious that I made Chris shoot water out of his nose on national television." You say as you start to laugh again. The crowd laughs with you. 

Chris laughs at himself and hangs his head as he pouts his lip. You wrap your arms around him and hug him. The crowd awhs 

You then turn back to Jimmy and hide your mouth from Chris with your hand. "Anything for the audience," you say

Chris, Henry, Jimmy and the crowd all lose it.

Nope and I didn't name myself after anyone either

2. When was the last time you cried?

If we're talking full-on crying with tears and snot and everything, then over a decade ago. If it's a few tears, then last Halloween. My mother was being an ignorant bastard again.

3. Do you have kids?

No, and I don't want any. If I were to get into a relationship with someone who already has kids then maybe, but I'm not getting any new ones and definitely not making them myself.

4. What sport have you played?

Never really "played" any sports, but I did kung-fu and jiu-jitsu since I was ~4 and also some indoor climbing. Got into bouldering again lately.

5. Do you use sarcasm?

Yep

6. What's the first thing you notice about other people?

Hands and mouth most of the time. Somehow that's always what first draws my attention and what I'm looking at during a conversation. Could tell you what someone's fingers or teeth look like before I know their eye colour.

7. Eye colour?

Brown and blue. Most of the time people think I have brown eyes because my pupils blend out the blue parts.

8. Scary movies or happy endings?

Definitely scary movies. Happy endings are nice, but it's not something I think is that important. All that counts is that it's interesting.

Writing? Maybe? I'm also good with animals (worked as a farm hand for a while) and my body is very flexible.

Are you named after anyone?

Yes, two great grandmothers & one actress

When was the last time you cried?

I teared up a lil seeing the subway ads for the Boston marathon a few days ago. Sounds a lil crazy but the runners often support really heartstring-pulling causes and it hits different if you remember the bombing (also it was JUST before i started my period)

Do you have kids?

Nope, and I don't want to grow my own either (I could see myself become a foster parent in 20 years)

What sports do you play/have you played?

A ton! Because i'm bad at all of them and love trying new things. I've been going to Jiu Jitsu & Krav Maga classes recently. I did soccer and crew in HS, and I've been skiing since I was two.

Yup

What’s the first thing you notice about people?

Whatever takes up the most amount of space, so usually hair or skin color tbh

Brown

Scary movies or happy endings comedies?

Happy endings for sure! I like the occasional scary movie but imo if i wanted to see sad/upsetting things, i'd just read the news

Jack of all trades fr. If i had to pick, I would say fiber arts and bong rips ;)

I play a TON of video games and love a good craft. I've been knitting since i was like 5

Running a combination film projection theater/dutch coffeeshop (aka place you can smoke weed inside) (there would have to be a lot of legal and financial changes in order for that to ever happen lol)

Hi Jen!! Happy Fri-yay!! I hope your weekend gets kicked off to a great start! Thank you for sending this my way, these are always fun!

Random Fact #1 - I love learning languages. I know a decent amount of Spanish and am currently learning Portuguese. Once I feel like I pick up enough to use context clues, I like to watch shows or movies in a different language to see how well I can pick up on what's being said. I most recently watched 30 Coins on HBO without the English dubbing. (side note, if you like religious horror I 110% recommend that show. Season 1 was really good.) Next up is Paradise.

Random Fact #2 - I have a green thumb. I grew up in New Jersey and our state nickname is the Garden State and I think when I learned that as a child I took it as a responsibility to garden. I have 15 house plants (in a one bedroom apartment) and every summer I overload my balcony with tomatoes, peppers and herbs. I actually just started my seeds a few days ago! Last year we had so many peppers that at the end of the season, I dehydrated them all to use as chili flakes and we still have half the jar.

Random Fact #3 - I have my blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Unfortunately I had to stop training about two years ago because I was dealing with injuries and health issues, but someday I hope to be able to get back to it. As a former marathoner, I can honestly say that training BJJ was the most intense workout I ever had in my life. I miss the adrenaline of "getting into fights" (sparring) and would love to get back in competition shape again. (Bonus fun fact, I won the Colorado state championship for my weight class in 2016) Occasionally I still dream in triangle chokes. Every now and then I slap a choke on my little brother (he's a foot taller than me) just to remind him that I can whip his ass.
