So when do we start talking about the fact that Laurent vs Kastor is really "Laurent vs the version of Damen he built up inside his head for years as a grieving child"? Because Kastor is everything Laurent thought Damen was. And by killing him, it not only closes an arc of younger brother killing an older brother, but also closes Laurent's personal arc because he kills to protect someone he loves, not to avenge someone long gone. His ghosts are finally allowed to be put to rest. That, and also if it hadn't been for Kastor (as well as the Regent), then so many people might still be alive, Auguste included.

its so funny to me how distanced Damen mentiones Nikandros all through Princes Gambit. and he mentions him often since hes the kyros of delpha, but its so inpersonal all the time that i literally had no idea they were actually friends until Kings Rising.

i actually pictured Nikandros as an older man, maybe his fathers age, with a bit of a mentor role for Damen all through PG, so imagine my surprise when i found out that Nik was actually the same age and more like a brother , literally Damens best friend.

it shows how detached Damen was from everyone. he was lifted onto a metaphorical podest as the heir were no one could reach him, so he had to keep an emotional distance to even his best friend. the only man who could have been his equal was his brother, who was older and had no interest in him - who conspired against him, tried to kill him even as a child.

his lovers were physical, willing but no equal. the closest he got to an emotional relationship with one of them was Jokaste and even with her he couldn't be in a truly emotional way (not mentioning her betraying him)

we always talk about how isolated and lonely Laurent was after Augustes death, but Damen was just as isolated and alone from birth on - without a mother to nurse him, with a father who raised him to duty, with servants and slaves doting on him and no one to be his true friend and equal

to be or not to be a bastard, that is the question

has anyone else toyed with the idea that the regent was also a bastard?

i mean he and kastor are characters reflective of each other, it's like the regent is living his past treachery in the present treachery of kastor and relishing in it

damen, of course, mentioned a few times how the only similarity between the regent and laurent were the blue eyes (i know it is also to contrast of laurent-light from the regent-dark) and the complex mind, but the mind could easily be explained by nurture not nature since the regent "raised" laurent.

and in veretian culture bastards are despised and forbidden, so if the regent was born a bastard it would have been in his father's best interest to cover it up as much as possible

maybe that's the main reason why he killed his brother and nephew and then took years before going against laurent because that was the only way he could rise as king without anyone objecting and trying to find reason to take the throne

idk... i've been thinking about this for days and any of your thoughts would be soothing
