Four more Hillingdon green spaces awarded Green Flag status

Hillingdon Council has once again been recognised for its outstanding parks and open spaces, after four more have scooped prestigious Green Flag Awards. The awards - which celebrate the most beautiful and well-managed outdoor spaces nationally and internationally - were given to Rosedale Park in Hayes, Moorhall Recreation Ground in Harefield, Rockingham Recreation Ground in Uxbridge and Hillingdon House Farm in Uxbridge. We had a much needed day off yesterday and headed to the coast in Betsy van (who blessed us with not breaking down until we were limping distance from Sam's!). Whilst there we did a very quick beach clean up - simply picking up any plastic waste we found on our beach walk. Pictured is some of it (there was some rope bits and a weird faceless plastic soldier toy still in my pocket when I snapped this!) here and it's pretty shocking really ... due to the strong winds and sea mist we didn't even walk far or for long and we found all of this! Please do take a carrier bag in your pocket when you next head to the coast and pick up everything which shouldn't be there. I admit I was shocked and disappointed to see images of people leaving their rubbish, discarded tents, and ….worse 💩 while wild camping when the initial lockdown restrictions started to lift in the summer across UK beauty spots. It made me even more determined to try and help my son learn the ‘Respect other people, Protect the natural environment, Enjoy the outdoors’, mantra which is the core of the countryside code even though he lives in Hackney 'hood. My son and I have since tried a few activities to learn the code together. These activities are perfect to do on a grey day OR (GOD FORBID) if you are stuck at home due to lockdown or quarantine related indoor homeschool days. Get your tech out for these. There’s a fun Aardman video online to watch, and the @scouts also have a great “Countryside Code - true or false?’ online game where kids have to guess whether or not statements are correct eg you shouldn’t drop litter (YES), you can let your dog run about without a lead (NO), you should run naked at all times in forests (NO, even if you feel like it).
