Do you have examples of your web/graphic design-ish art on hand? I've caught glimpses and it's some REALLY excellent stuff

howdy! thank you so much for this wonderful ask, i very rarely get the chance to talk about my web/graphic design stuff, so seize any chance i can get! you'll have to forgive me for how scattered this everything is, my graphic design stuff normally ends up as a smaller part of illustrations, so a lot of it is gonna be cropped, haha.

my hypnagog header is probably the thing i'm most proud of, it was the first custom font i ever made that felt like i captured what i saw in my head. kind of a clunky way to put it but before this i'd change my header logo and general "branding" like once every three months, yet this one has stuck around for like 2ish years!! here it is in my classic colorway and my new green/orange one.

here are a couple of my older logos for a bunch of random projects (a comic about evil horses, a defunct community project, a bunch of little glyphs for hypnagog before i settled on my current aesthetic, and one for story about evil clones)

here are three posters i did for a couple of classes, they're more illustrative than graphic design but there's still elements that feel close enough to gd for me to post lol (a pitch poster for ANOTHER comic i was working on, an editorial piece about the recent HPAI surge, and a quick zine about my experiences with internet horror)

and FINALLY. here's my web design stuff. full disclaimer, i learned how to code on neopets, and i've never been able to break free of it's pull, so p much everything i've ever done for web design has all been on neopets, or on clone sites that emulate it pre-2007.

i'd love to link you these two but they're unfortunately behind a login screen on my current petsim of choice, so i hope the screenshots will do! these two are pet lookups coded from the ground up to look like social media profile pages (fun sidenote: Butch has a normal profile, Ransom is a silly hacker stereotype, and he had no choice but to "customize" his profile when faced with the insanely unsecured back-end of LUNET.)

aside from that, my other most recent web project was developing a really sleek character directory for my toyhou.se. i made all the graphics on this page and i'm super proud of it, haha.

oh i almost forgot. i also have a bunch of really dumb banners that my friends and i use in discord in tandem with a bot that posts them on command - most of them are intentionally designed to look bad, but some of em (especially the data "webba" banner) were made with a lot of care, haha.

i think i might be forgetting some things, but that's pretty much it! my next big project is building out my neocities - i'll definitely post about it when its finished because i wanna use it as a secondary posting location for all my stuff :o]

Hi! I know almost nothing about Arthuriana, except some few stories that we read ten years ago in Middle School in English class. I would want to know a little more about the historical context, the origins, the meanings and the orders of all those legends, but I don’t know where to begin. Do you study them in school/uni or do you research about them on your own? Thank you!

Hi! No, I've never really studied Arthuriana, though we touched upon it a little at university during some of our English Literature classes, but in very broad strokes. Plus our professor made us read the book she wrote on the similarities between Arthuriana and the Latvian epic Lāčplēsis (don't know about my classmates, but I read it - it was pretty interesting, but I still found it funny that she was essentially forcing people to read her book). Frankly speaking, I wouldn't say I do research about it now either - I just read whatever works I find available online, choosing them based on what I've heard about them and what links I find floating around on tumblr. Regarding the historical context and origins, some years ago I read a pretty comprehensive book that was like a summary of previous research on the historical origins of Arthuriana, but it was in Russian - "Меч короля Артура. Так рождалась легенда" (The Sword of King Arthur. So the Legend Was Born) by Vadim Erlikhman, so I don't think it will be of much use because it is hardly translated into English. It has a long bibliography which includes a lot of books and research works in English, but I don't know which of them are the most useful.

As to where to begin... it’s a difficult question, especially since a lot of these legends contradict each other more or less because they belong to different traditions. I think it helps if you already have an idea which characters or events in particular you would like to read about, because then you can start with the texts focused on them and then move to other characters or events if you decide that you enjoy these legends in general. @fuckyeaharthuriana has a lot of useful rec lists (links in blog description), including those sorted by character. I can also suggest some works that I enjoyed the most, but please bear in mind that I am far from being an expert - I read several texts last year in the wake of watching BBC Merlin and The Green Knight, and this year started devouring basically all texts I could find after reading Le Morte d'Arthur, but I haven't read the Vulgate, for example, and some other things that, I believe, are considered basics, while having read some more obscure texts that caught my attention but are not as fundamental. Anyway...

Yvain: Knight of the Lion by Chrétien de Troyes - this one has everything: adventures, love, friendship, active female characters (Lunete my best friend Lunete), an Animal Sidekick, and a happy ending after a lot of tribulations. The main character is Sir Yvain, son of King Uriens and Morgan Le Fay, and the story is about him falling in love with a widow of a knight he killed, managing to win her affection but then losing her trust and having to win it back while doing a bunch of heroic deeds on the way. Quite long but I found it a lot of fun.

The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnell for Helping of King Arthur - I’m linking the translation I read, but there are many of them available online. It’s a short and fun romance in which a knight captures King Arthur and challenges him to find out what women desire the most or lose his head. His nephew Gawain decides to help him and ends up having to marry an ugly lady who helped him find the answer, but then it turns out that her ugliness is actually a curse, which the answer he discovered helps him undo. 

Sir Gawain and the Green Knight - I read it in translation by Bernard O’Donoghue, for the simple reason that it was the one I stumbled upon in a bookstore, but I can’t find it online. There are several other available, however; the one I’m linking is by Jessie Weston. With a movie recently being out, you probably know the gist of the plot: a green stranger arrives at king’s court and challenges Arthur’s knights to give him a blow of an axe and then, a year later, receive the same blow in return. So Gawain accepts the challenge and chops the Green Knight’s head off, but he puts the head back on, and now Gawain is due to lose his head in a year. As he rides off to meet his fate, he stays at a castle belonging to a married couple, where his honour is tested (and things get pretty gay). 

The “Arthurian” Portion of the Roman de Brut by Wace - this one is not one of my favourites, to be honest, even though the language is really beautiful in some parts, but I think it’s important. It tells about Arthur’s ancestors, Uther’s rise to power, Merlin’s origins (which I found the most interesting part), Arthur’s rise to power, various conquests and death. Mostly conquests, which is why I wasn’t too engrossed. 

Le Morte d’Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory (Volume 1, Volume 2) - this is one of those foundational works, a XV century attempt to put all the main Arthurian legends together. Arthur’s birth and the start of his reign, Lancelot and Guinevere, Tristan and Isolde, the quest for the Holy Grail, the fall of Camelot - it’s all here. There are various editions, but I don’t know which to suggest, because I made a questionable decision to read the original (the one I’m linking) which is not very easy to read because of the old language. 

Prose Tristan and Povest ‘o Trystchane - I love the Tristan and Isolde stories not so much because I like the main couple but because they’re usually a lot of fun. Shenanigans, wild adventures, horniness, the “everyone’s a little in love with everyone” vibes... My preferred version of all I’ve read is Tristan’s part of Le Morte d’Arthur, but these two are also cool. They’re pretty similar until the second one (the XVI Belarusian version) starts diverging greatly (there’s a whole subplot where Tristan, Isolde, and Guinevere travel to save Arthur from captivity, it’s wild).

Morien - a Dutch romance about a young Moorish knight who goes on a quest to find his biological father and ends up having some adventures with Gawain and Lancelot. I like it because searching for one’s father is such a... normal reason for a quest, something perfectly understandable to a modern person, unlike many of the more outlandish ideas that appear in some other romances.

2x06 is currently the dynamic i’ve been hoping for w julunet (that’s what i’m calling the friendship trio, feel free to do the same) bc the banter between monet and julien where kindly luna does little digs at monet and lunet to julien…mwah. like it’s not in a malicious way it’s them being honest as friends. i do kinda feel like in general friendship on the show was lacking between the girls and they felt attached to each other out of obligation rather than genuinely liking each other, which they do. like this is the friendship i feel like has needed to develop bc my girls are so much happier and yet the focus isn’t solely on julien w monet and luna reluctantly in the background. i love how more equal the friendship’s become.

Buckle up throuple fans! You’ll get the season focus but it’s more to show why the 3 don’t work/they all want different things. It is throuple centric but maudrey scenes are written very beautiful with the emotional/bonding scenes they get. Maudrey fans will be very happy with S2. The solo post of them today is just the beginning. Have bad news for you Aki & Max are the least developed of the 3 pairings on purpose. Max/Audrey shippers will be happy with S2. The writers saw the feedback for them in S1 and chose to cater to the fans. Season 2 is truly a love letter for maudrey fans.

At this point I'm just happy that you consider me one of the main throuple shippers to send this stuff to. Always wanted that for me. I don't know if I really believe this especially because of how you say it, but at the same time I don't fully doubt that they'll go into Maudrey alone at some point, but I believe in Makidrey endgame anyway. Not like the show is ending at season 2 unless it gets suddenly cancelled. Idk if I believe they'll just choose to pander to a side of the fandom. Like if that was the case wouldn't they go for Lunet for example? Plus Makeno (Akimax) is also pretty popular outside of the "I want this to be like old GG and for Maudrey to be the new Chair!!!" demographic.

JULIEN: BIG SISTER ENGERY THIS EPISODE. I'M LOVING IT AND LOVING IT. I think she can stop trying a bit now and but I'm here for the connection, I'm here for it all. Quick thinker, knew the circle wasn't tight. She wasn't really there for Audrey but she has been, I think she just got caught up. Since Zoya moved there, they haven't had the chance to just be sisters, to just love each other without any drama. They have not only the past month to make up for but years and she wants to do right by Zoya. I'm glad she realized at the end that, she needed to be there for Audrey but I'm not upset because I get it. I also LOVE that she finally, stood up to Monet and say and get wit it or get it out. Boom. I've been waiting.

OBIE: I wanna ride hard for you because people keep talking about your hair line. I think you need to learn that relationships will have ups and downs and it won't be perfect all of the time. I feel like Obie is chasing perfection, no fights, no problems, just coasting and it won't happen, it'll never happen. Do better. That being said, I'm glad we got something from Obie. I'm glad we got to see him being the Prince of New York. It's hella shady that you didn't just come out with the truth and you wanted to do a song and dance but Obie is doing more and using that name so yes, give me character stuff.

MONET: BYE. No, but really. Amazing one liners as always. I liked the little fight with Julien, I felt a bit of distress, I'm into it. While I did expect her to cross Julien, I didn't expect her to cross Luna and all her hard work, that was dirty but you moving the story and shit so what can I say? I don't think Monet will go for the crown but I could see her finding someone to prop up. I want more of her parents, maybe she has a very bad relationship with her mom? Also, sis, Julien is right, you can't keep jumping clients when they want to change and do up their image. No sis, no. (And you almost tanked Julien's career soooooooooooo)

AUDREY: SIS U WERE SINKING. Okay, so Audrey isn't a character I feel that connected too. She's bitchy, a little less than Lunet but still. So, I have a hard time caring but objectively, you should break up with Aki. You know him by now and maybe it's comfort or you really want to have something. It's okay, break up with him because he's a friend and not the boyfriend you need. You want someone who will let you vent, not solve. Not see. Go live with Julien. The fight with your mom is understandable (And realize that forcing people on her won't work.) because you shouldn't have to be the back bone of the family. The dad line was a low blow, the airport thing was a low blow but you're a teenage girl and what can I say? Nothing, just don't become the woman you hate even though parents are the models. That being said, if I had seen her interacting with her dad more, the line wouldn't have been as low. But I can't tell that he loves her, we don't even get a phone conversation. Do better writers. And I think at the party, she got a chance to see how her mom felt. I don't know what happened to move but I think it has something to do with her meds. Audrey, be a boss. Break up, tell him that ya'll are better as friends because it won't go has bad as you think it will. Move in with Julien (I just want to see it happen.)

ZOYA: I don't even have much to say. My sis was popping off this episode. I got sass, I got questioning her relationship with Obie. Yes, talk about how you feel about him with the girls and go girl stuff. I really felt her when she said she wanted her own friend, writers please give her, her own friends. PLEASE. I'M BEGGING. Simon, you dirty dog. I'm glad Obie got it out but he could've said something to her. I'm sick. I'm more upset that he wasn't a new friend or a love interest. Just ugh. But I liked Zoya this episode, she could worry about normal teenage stuff for the most part without having to worry about being attacked by Monet and Luna.

LUNA: MY GOOD SIS. Just like I didn't expect Monet to turn on her, I didn't expect her to not stand by Monet. I know she was enjoying the Zoya vibe and thought it was cute, she was becoming a bit more friendly sure but I wow, yas. Go off girl. I want to see more of fashion stylist Luna, a Luna sponsored fashion show where Aki models and drama happens? I'd be here for it, I am here for it.

MAX: I was ready to box. Listen. I was ready to fight this point as much as I felt for him. So, the feeling for him. He honestly, believes that Rafa is good for him. And he was catching feelings? He thought Rafa needed him in his life because he had no family, he also has no family in a sense to him at least. So, he's really caught up in this man. And I feel so bad that he said he's sober when he's with him or something along those lines. That's heartbreaking. I'm glad that talk in the end pulled him out of it, I'm glad he realized that he had a hand to play in his friends not wanting to be around him or deal with him. I'm glad he followed them and was in on the hug. Wonderful. Now my dude, you do not deserve Aki, not as a romantic partner or a friend. My boy was seriously worried, and you blew down on him WHILE using a nickname for his nickname....sick. I was ready to throw hands, like. My spirit was not right. That was so low. I keep seeing people say that because Max wasn't in a relationship, Audrey shouldn't feel some type of way and Aki is just letting his hurt roll off because he's worried but while you didn't have a duty in the relationship, you had a duty as a friend, to both of them. You ghost for a week and say nothing, no talking about the blow up or the outing and you running with this little stanky thing, you try to ease back into the group, no. And you still don't deserve Aki's time. Like. My dude did not hit you up after the kiss, he was not checking for you on that dating app, he was interested in other mens, you sat between the couple. Okay. He had been checking on you from jump. Just no. I'm sick of the shit. Never step to my boy like that again.

AKI: MY boy. Lemme get this out the way. You need to listen, not solve or give perspective. Like, she doesn't need it. I get your friends in danger but express how serious you think this is to her. I get that a long-distance relationship might not bother you and you think things will work out because there are bigger problems but talk to her. Re-assure her. Or break up with her her. As I said before, ya'll will not hate each other if you break up. And learn to just, even, pretend or something but you struggle in this aspect. Do better. That being said, Aki, episode MVP. He said, something is off, take him down. My perfect himbo man, said not my watch. And listen, you can't be as pushy because people don't respond but I'm glad you were on it. You knew. You said, I'mma run up on this man and you did. Yes. That being said, stand up for yourself, this boy does not deserve your energy. I get it. You might have a crush, this is bestie but bestie has not been treating you right for a while. And this was a new love. You're too loving, let some of that going at Rafa energy pop out around the friend group. But you a king and you care so much, just re-focus for now. Find you a cute lil thang and make the boy jelly. I need this resolved before I can accept anything canon, fanfics is where I'll be. But overall, Aki was making moves, you gotta learn something from the right wing media mogul.

GROUP: I finally feel like I talk about them as a whole. I wish they would've shown the others being upset by Max's ghosting because ya'll acting lowkey outta pocket and I didn't see anyone but Audrey and Aki check for this boy. Like, do you really care? But he fit into the group hug at the end. I know Monet saw a rising star in Zoya at the bar place, you make this a powerful DUO. YOU KNOW YOU WERE FEELING HER. Luna and Monet roll their eyes Audrey but ya'll bet not play like the three of ya'll don't enjoy gossip, fashion, talking about people and lowkey making fun of Zoya's newbie-ness together. Honestly, I'm happy we got more group interactions and little moments, I can start to kind of see how they were friends for a while even if all of them aren't close.

So this is based off of Arthurian lore and has some elements of it but it’s mostly (?) original!

It starts out in a normal high school setting, centered around these two kids named Elin and Niro. Niro’s had a life of total misfortune—his parents died when he was little and there was nobody else to take him in, so he was forced into foster care, and has switched schools so often that he never really got to make any permanent friendships. He’s a quiet guy, sort of weighed down by all of the loss he’s experienced, so that sort of makes him a mysterious and attractive sort of person, which gains him immediate popularity as the school’s handsome new kid. (He’s in his senior year, now, and has been at this school for almost the full year.) Despite his withdrawn personality Niro actually gets along well with his peers, but mostly because he’s a very agreeable sort of person that just goes along with what he’s told to do to fit in. He’s just going through the motions at this point, trying to survive and figure out what he wants to do in life. It isn’t really working out too well because Niro has major depression so every day is a struggle, but his current “guardian” at the foster home he’s staying in helps a lot with that, and Niro views her as sort of a mother figure to him, and it’s soft :’)

Elin, on the other hand, is the school’s laughingstock, and gets picked on a LOT by his classmates. He never fights back and tries to stay out of everybody’s way, so people think him even weirder because of it. He rarely talks and is always found with his nose stuck in a book, which has also labeled him as a major geek, so you can bet he gets targeted a lot because of this;;

Unfortunately, the kids that Niro’s friends with are the group that picks on Elin the most, and it always makes Niro uncomfortable but he’s too hesitant to really speak up about it, especially since Elin just. Sort of takes it and never outwardly complains. It’s basically just Niro making excuses to himself, and whenever he DOES try to talk his buddies out of it they’re like come on man we’re just joking around it’s not a big deal. So that sucks. One day when Niro’s walking to school he notices he’s being followed by a weirdly dressed girl. Eventually she corners him and she’s like “Merlin’s been taking too long to find you so I took things into my own hands since we’re running out of time” and Niro’s like ???? Excuse me? But she doesn’t explain and literally yanks him into a portal and that’s that. LMAO

When they emerge, the girl introduces herself as Lunete, and reveals that she’s taken Niro to the world of Avilion, in the kingdom of starlight called Inlustria. Niro’s still processing that he’s been pulled into another world entirely when Lunete begins to escort him to the castle, and pretty much dumps the world’s lore and his Destiny™️ on him on the way.

Lunete explains that there have always been two central figures in Inlustria, for many centuries across many generations. Those figures are Merlin, the wizard, and Arthur, the king meant to wield the holy sword and unify the five kingdoms on the continent together. Currently there are two Merlins, with the second being younger and newer to the position, still in training. However, she adds that this particular Merlin is the most powerful they’ve ever seen in the long history of Merlins to exist, and that he’s basically a child prodigy. It is Merlin’s task to watch over, guide and protect Arthur, so that peace can remain and the cycle can continue anew. The current Arthur is sadly old and very ill, practically on his deathbed, so the process of choosing a new Arthur to replace him had to be rushed.

Lunete then tells Niro that the Arthurs are chosen by fate before birth and are always humans from the other world. Arthurs are always loyal, confident and kindhearted, so there’s never a chance of an Arthur going astray (unless their Merlin purposefully leads them down that path). Niro’s like why are you telling me all this and Lunete goes well isn’t it obvious? Why else would I be telling you. And then Niro realizes that he has been chosen as the new Arthur, and immediately goes into panic mode. Lunete apologizes for the abrupt introduction and Avilion crash course lol but she says that usually it’s the Merlin’s job to remain in the human world, scout out the new Arthur, and bring them to Avilion, since they’re naturally drawn to them by their magic. But this Merlin is particularly stubborn and wants nothing to do with Arthur or his born duty to essentially serve the king, so he’s been stalling on locating him out of sheer spite.

Lunete and Niro arrive at the castle and she leads him into the grand library, where Merlins usually spend most of their time. Niro is shocked to find out that Elin is Merlin, and Elin immediately goes “You have GOT to be kidding me” when he realizes that the new Arthur—who he has to spend the rest of his life with btw—is Niro.

Niro’s even more shocked to find out that Elin is a completely different person than how he is at school. Elin is witty, arrogant and very sassy, and constantly throws shade at Niro for doing nothing while he was being bullied. (Niro then accuses Elin for not standing up for himself when he’s CLEARLY capable of it with both his silver tongue and his knack for magic, but Elin explains that it’s a rule for Merlins not to make a big presence of themselves in the human world. Then Niro feels very guilty.) Elin swears off of accepting Niro as the new Arthur and says he can protect the kingdom all on his own.

Naturally Niro is very reluctant to take on the position of Arthur and become the ruler of an entire kingdom, but Lunete tells him he doesn’t really have a choice, and that all Arthurs fall into the role eventually, so it will be something he’ll automatically adapt to because he’s The Chosen One and it’s meant to be. Niro continuously tries to reach out to Merlin, but he’s notoriously stubborn and refuses to acknowledge Niro.

Eventually Lunete lets slip that Merlin had a complicated history with another human in his childhood that ended...not so well (and no it’s not Esca lol), hence his general distaste towards the other world and humans in general. Ofc that’s not all Merlin is hiding, there’s another enormous secret he doesn’t want coming into the light. And you bet Niro’s going to discover them all ;)

So yeah there’s obviously a lot more that goes on after that—Niro trains to fit into the Arthur role (with a lot of sexy swordfighting training montages), Merlin eventually accepts him and they grow closer (yes. In that way ;D), Merlin shows off how skilled he is with his magic and Niro goes oh no I think I might be in love with him, there’s trouble with the northern kingdom they’re trying to deal with involving a new villain that’s popped up, Niro gets to meet a king from the southern kingdom who sort of becomes his father figure/mentor so that’s cool? Niro finds out exactly what sins Merlin committed in the past, and that past sadly catches up with him and nearly ruins everything so that’s fun. Niro finds out some shit and almost abandons his role as Arthur but eventually returns to Inlustria and obtains Excalibur to save Merlin’s ass, etc. etc. I think after the “main” story ends I’m going to send them out to sea so they can go on an epic magic pirate adventure, because when Niro was a kid he was super into pirates and treasure hunting and the ocean, he was never really a “magic and kingdoms” type of guy which is super ironic. Merlin’s excited about traveling but it turns out he’s really seasick and it’s hilarious. Somewhere down the line they’ll probably find out why there’s always been a “Merlin” and “Arthur” role in their kingdom as well. So LOTS of fun stuff is in store! And my brain hasn’t been shutting up about lore and worldbuilding for this story ever since I came up with it >;)

Villainous: Reform School Chapter 32

Meanwhile, back in the bathroom of her room, Melanie was finishing her song while she finished composing her text message about what happened for Sensei Lucy.

“My lamb and martyr, this will be over soon,” Melanie sang, copying and pasting the text message to send to her parents and Lunet. “You look so precious. You look so precious. You look so precious.”

Once the text message was copied and pasted to all the right places, Melanie sent them all. Despite having sent the messages, she was no calmer than she was before. In fact, she felt worse.

Melanie was struggling to breathe. Her thoughts were rushing. No two thoughts in her brain were connecting. Her eyes were filling with tears. She curled up into a ball and continued to cry, having completely forgotten that she was still on the line with her Nun-ja sisters.

“Melanie,” Lucy’s voice said. “Melanie, it’s me. Don’t say anything in case someone is listening. Just listen to what I say. You are having a panic attack. You need to do something to calm yourself down. Okay? So, get up and find something to do to calm you down. Did your parents bring you your keyboard?”

“Yes,” Melanie whispered.

“Then get up and go,” Lucy said.

Melanie then got to her feet and opened the bathroom door. After unlocking the door to her bedroom in case anyone came by, she turned around and looked for her keyboard.

That was when Melanie noticed the pictures. They were hand drawn pictures of Melanie and people laughing at her and calling her a freak, Demencia being featured the most prominently among them. Melanie looked around. The pictures circled around her bed and the characters all pointed to the center. It was obviously Demencia’s handiwork, and she couldn’t have picked a worst time to show it off.

Melanie shook with anger. Then did three things. First, she snapped a picture of the drawings to send to both her families. Second, she sent the photos. Then finally, Melanie went into a frenzy tearing every drawing off the wall she could find.

Melanie’s heartbeat grew louder. Her blood pressure grew higher, and her fingertips grew hotter and hotter until flames started poking out of her fingertips.

“Melanie. It’s okay. I’m right here.”

Melanie recognized her Father’s voice. She paused in place with all the drawings on the floor.

“But, Father, you’ve seen what they’ve done,” Melanie whimpered. “You see what’s happening. I’m turning into a demon. What am I supposed to do?”

“You are not a demon. You are what I say you are, and you are my beloved child. No one has the right to call you otherwise, not even Black Hat.”

“Then why is everything in me saying I am?” Melanie asked. “Father, I’m part grim reaper, death god, whatever my Papi calls himself. I can summon fire from Hell. I’m from a family of demons and witches. You say that I’m your child, one of your heroes, but everyone around me is telling me I’m not. What is the point of even fighting it? Why should I bother when everyone wants me to be something else?”

“Because no one else has the right to tell you who you are but you and God,” Lucy said, getting Melanie’s attention.

Melanie paused and telepathically sent out a pulse to be sure that any video or audio was disabled before continuing.

“You both say that, but I’m the one with fire coming out of my fingertips,” Melanie said with tears rolling down her face. “What am I supposed to do with that? Black Hat said it was fire from Hell. He also called me his grand-niece and said I was partly what he was. God, Lucy, I’m a monster…”

“No, you’re not!” Lucy cried over the phone. “Melanie, you can’t help your ancestry or your family history, but you are in control of yourself and what you become. I know. Black Hat fed me similar lines. He said that I had the blood of the yakuza in me and that was something I should never turn against. Yet I did.”

“You aren’t part demon,” Melanie protested sadly. “You don’t have a blood connection to Black Hat because of your stupid great-grandfather.”

Lucy laughed gently and said, “Why should that matter? You’re still a Nun-ja with so many sisters who love you to pieces. Through God, all things are possible. Every day, your soul is being purified into His image. That is something Black Hat can’t change no matter how badly he wants it to. Remember that.”

“I want to, but I feel so weak,” Melanie said with a few more tears coming out of her eyes as she pulled her 505 jacket on over her dress. “When I was there in Black Hat’s grasp, all I could feel and think about was how scared I was. I want to remember how loved my Father makes me feel. I want to feel the freedom and the hope I felt that day with the Nun-jas when I was baptized. I want to remember that and hold onto that, but suddenly, it’s like those feelings are slipping away.”

“Sometimes, that happens,” Lucy admitted. “Feelings are never constant. That is why we need to find ways to connect to the Spirit within us to remember. Because even when you don’t feel the emotions, you still have the memories, and you still have the conviction that those memories created inside you. You just need to take the time to connect with the Lord and to remember.”

Melanie sat on her bed and asked, “How do I remember, Lucy? How do you remember when it’s hard and all you can think about is Black Hat? Have you ever felt like this?”

“Very often,” Lucy said sadly.

“What?” Melanie asked in disbelief. “Even after you got away from Black Hat and your family.”

“Yes,” Lucy said. “After I ran away, I used to wake up at night, screaming and hyperventilating. I would have nightmares about being captured by Black Hat and being brainwashed to the point where I couldn’t remember who I was anymore. Agnes Takea would come running and sit with me and pray over me until the fear passed and I could drift off to sleep again. I can’t be by your side now, but I will be here as long as I can be. Okay?”

Tears came out of Melanie’s eyes, and she said, “I betrayed you, Lucy. You might have to face Black Hat now, and it’s all my fault.”

“No, it isn’t,” Lucy chided. “I’m asking God to take that thought out of your head right now because that’s not true! That doctor drugged you. You didn’t have control over what you were saying. They took advantage of you. Nothing that happened was your fault. Do you understand me?”

“Yes, but how do I stop feeling afraid?” Melanie asked, wiping her tears. “When you get scared like this, how do you make yourself stop feeling like this?”

“You don’t,” Lucy admitted. “You never completely do, but God shows you ways to walk through it until the fear becomes small enough to walk through. Those ways include prayer, talking to people who love you, and your favorite hobbies. It doesn’t matter how weird it is as long as it helps you connect to God and to yourself and brings you peace of mind.”

“Like playing the piano is for me,” Melanie said with a small smile. “You mentioned it being weird. Do you have any weird hobbies you do that calm you down?”

“You’ll laugh,” Lucy said with a quiet chuckle. “I listen to my favorite anime soundtracks while taking a walk out in nature and doing our poses while pretending I’m an anime warrior from one of the animes I grew up watching. I know it sounds unbelievably cheesy, but it really does help me.”

“I don’t think it’s cheesy,” Melanie said, finding her keyboard in a box under her bed and pulling it out on top of her bed. “You’re basically a real-life anime warrior and living saint, so why not embrace it?”

“Ha! Thanks for the compliment, but despite what you and our sisters may think, I am not some immovable force of nature,” Lucy said sadly. “I feel fear and sadness and anxiety like any other pilgrim in this life. Like you do now. But the biggest thing I’ve ever learned is that it’s okay to not be okay. You can feel pain and tell me and God all about it. It’s okay to cry. You have to be strong in front of your enemies in that house, but in front of the people who love you, you don’t need to be afraid of feeling anything. Okay?”

“Okay, it’s just that I feel like there’s so much more I could be doing right now,” Melanie said, setting up her keyboard.

“Melanie, you can’t do anything without a clear head,” Lucy said. “That’s why you need to calm down. Besides, you attempting to escape again is exactly what they’ll be expecting right now. You wouldn’t succeed, especially not since your grandfather is there. Right now, taking care of your mind is the best thing you could be doing, and you just need to accept that. As for me and your sisters, the best thing we can do right now is work around the clock to hide our tracks and find a way to get you out of there.”

“Do you guys have any plans yet?” Melanie asked, practicing some chords on the piano.

“No,” Lucy said sadly. “But don’t worry, Melanie. One way or another, we’re going to get you out of there. I got you into this mess, Melanie, and I am going to find a way to get you out of it.”

Melanie paused her chords in surprise.

“Lucy, it’s not your fault,” Melanie said comfortingly. “I chose to be a Nun-ja. This is the life I wanted for myself.”

“I know, but I am still not going to rest until I find a way to get you out of there,” Lucy said with conviction. “I promise you that. Just don’t give up hope.”

Melanie smiled and quietly said, “Okay. I won’t. I’m going to play the piano.”

“That’s the spirit,” Lucy said. “Put the app on speaker. I want to hear you play.”

“But Lucy, what if someone hears you?” Melanie asked anxiously.

“I won’t talk,” Lucy said. “I will listen and hang up as soon as I hear another voice that isn’t yours. I will not put you in any more danger than you’re already in.”

“Okay,” Melanie said, putting the phone’s invisible app on speaker.

Melanie flipped through piano books that her family had left her. They were chords, classical pieces, classic rock ballads, ragtime, the piano music for some musicians she liked, etc. She then picked up a book of piano covers of grunge songs and chose the piece she was working on the most recently, a piano rendition of Nirvana’s “Lithium.”

Melanie began playing the sad song that Lucy recognized very well.

To her surprise, Melanie even found herself singing along to the words she knew by heart, “I’m so happy cuz today I found my friends. They’re in my head. I’m so ugly. That’s okay cuz so are you. Broke our mirrors. Sunday morning is every day for all I care, and I’m not scared. Light my candles in a daze cuz I found God. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah…”

As soon as she got to the chorus, Melanie realized she was crying again.

Flug and 505 came to the door towards the song’s end. By that point, tears were freely flowing out of Melanie’s eyes.

505 wanted to open the door to check on Melanie, but Flug made him pause to listen.

“I like it, I’m not gonna crack!” Melanie sang. “I miss you, I'm not gonna crack! I love you, I'm not gonna crack! I killed you, I'm not gonna crack! I like it, I'm not gonna crack! I miss you, I'm not gonna crack! I love you, I'm not gonna crack! I killed you, I'm not gonna crack…”

Melanie then broke down sobbing again. She held her face in her hands, turned the phone off speaker, and put her headphones back on. She couldn’t say a word. All she could do was cry.

“It’s alright, Melanie,” Lucy said with a sad smile behind her voice. “The tears bring healing, so you need to shed them.”

Before she could respond, Melanie heard a knock on the door. She quickly ended the call and closed the app before rolling on her side and continuing to let herself fall apart.

“Obviously our Christmas plans have been somewhat de -” Bel cut herself off abruptly, and Clem realised belatedly she must have been about to say derailed. “Ah, we’ve had to change things about a bit. We wanted to check in on Sebastian this morning, but we’re going to have dinner this evening and we’d love for you to join us.”

Join them?

Clem took it back - this was definitely the hardest she had ever wished for the grown to open and swallow her whole. They wanted her to join them for Christmas dinner, and what kind of awful person would she be if she said yes but how could she possibly refuse? 

“It would mean so much to have you there, and I’m sure Seb would want you to come.”

The kindness was making her want to cry; Clem could feel the tears pricking at her eyes. But she could also feel the panic winding its way around her chest, slowly tightening until it was hard to breathe and she was choking on the words as they came out:

“That’s - I mean, I hadn’t -”

“I’ve WhatsApped you our address,” Feodorcha interrupted in his low Irish lilt. “Even if you say no now, Bel will call and talk you into it.”

His wife did not seem put out by this assessment - on the contrary, she firmly nodded her agreement.

“It’ll just be us and a few other friends. My little brother and his boyfriend, who are currently at home wrangling my eldest, and Jeannot’s sister Lunete.”

“And Rafe,” Meg interjected from where she sat holding on to Sebastian’s hand. “Rafe will be there.”

“Oh, that’s right!” Bel clapped her hands together. “You haven’t met Rafe yet.”

It was instinct to want to ask, Who’s Rafe?, but something about the way they spoke made Clem think that they thought she should know already, and that asking would only make them suspicious. And while she still fully intended to tell them the truth, Sebastian’s hospital room on Christmas morning did not strike her as an ideal opportunity for doing so.

4. Share a sentence or paragraph from your writing that you’re really proud of (explain why, if you like)

Well, I was going to put something from "accolade" in here because I thought I did a pretty nice job of the atmosphere, with shifting clouds of steam and the flowing river, something clanking and splashing in its midst, obscured and then revealed again by the mist, but actually, no, revisiting it it's even more of a mess than I remembered and I like none of that, lol.

Ice is another thing I enjoyed playing with, though, and there are a couple lines I still like there. One is, "Lunete shook her head and watched Glace wander the courtyard, blowing idle puffs of ice that turned bushes to miniature sculpture." Nice and simple, but I think it does a good job of conjuring up the kind of glittering ice-rimed... things... plants turn into after an ice storm. I think it's an unexpected moment that's fun to visualize. Should definitely be "puffs of *frost*" rather than "puffs of *ice*," though.

I also like, "The glalie's displeasure shed from him in a litter of snowflakes." Again, I think this is just a fun mental image, and a way of making the glalie feel different than a human. When glalie get disgruntled, the temperature around them drops, so you get a little shower of snow... again, a nice little image, and something that people might not ordinarily think of when they think of ice-types. Shoutout to myself for picking this out of the doc and going, "Hey, I like this sentence!" and not realizing until I pasted it in here that it was in the wrong fucking tense.

17. Do you think readers perceive your work - or you - differently to you? What do you think would surprise your readers about your writing or your motivations?

Ahaha, well, I think many people perceive my writing, and probably me in general, as a lot more serious than it actually is? Most of my writing is just me having fun, and what it contains is unabashedly driven by rule of cool/rule of funny a lot of the time. Which, honestly, considering a lot of the nonsense that goes on in the chapterfics especially, shoudn't be too much of a surprise. There are certain themes that show up throughout, but generally speaking they emerge organically as a result of what I find interesting or because plot naturally accretes around certain aspects of the story or characters. But generally speaking my stories aren't really *about* anything except me having a good time.

18. Do any of your stories have alternative versions? (plotlines that you abandoned, AUs of your own work, different characterisations?) Tell us about them.

Salvage has so many of these. So many! Which is kind of weird, because my previous stories haven't, despite Clouded Sky taking nearly as long to produce. It might be that I haven't been working on any big long chapterfics, and not even many one-shots, while writing it as I have with my previous fics, so maybe effort/ideas that would ordinarily go into those stories have ended up spawning all these spinoffs/mutations of the main fic instead.

As far as abandoned plotlines, this story has been pretty extensively and publicly restructured, so yeah, stuff's gotten lost in the shuffle... I used to joke to myself that the story had an unreasonable amount of hanging out on the beach given its overall tone, but thennnnn Mewtwo went and burned down the child's house and it won't be going back to its island again, so in fact the story now contains almost 0% beach from this time on, oops. (There is one scene in Orre that will take place on a beach, assuming it makes it all the way through to publication. It's not a plot-crtical one.) We also missed out on Nate going to prison, the child being Red (although that one could still happen), and one scene that I really liked where Nate got to lament the fact that his pokémon were all gone and it was all his fault. Now you'll just have to imagine it, since we won't be seeing him until he gets them back, if ever.

And AU's, so many AU's. Even way back in 2012 or something I was talking about one I was rather fond of, where the child demands that Nate read it a children's book, and he isn't about to put in the effort to actually do that and makes up something ridiculous solely based on the pictures. Assuming I still have the file around somewhere, that one will end up getting published as an extra at some point near the end of the fic. Other than that, I've got everything from alternate endings to a weird time travel AU that happens in a scene that isn't even in the main fic (because the child isn't there for it). There's also a rather extensive PMD AU that may or may not end up seeing the light of day at some point and which is gently referenced within the fic itself. It's perhaps not technically an AU, since it's not in any way incompatible with the main canon; you could choose to pretend that it happened or not without it changing the story as written at all.

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

Uhhh this one seems hard to do without spoilers. But I hope you've all been paying attention to the stuff about how psychic abilities work and their ability to warp the thinking of people around the psychic, especially over time. I'm quite proud of this worldbuilding thing, but people haven't commented on it much. The concept is central to the plot and drives basically all of the final arcs in Orre, so it's definitely worth thinking about if you haven't! Relatedly, there was a scene in one of the now-deleted Orre chapters (but it will 100% return largely unchanged in the new version) that dropped some info that I thought made it pretty screamingly obvious what's up with Mew and where she might be, buuuut nobody ever commented on that, either, so perhaps it wasn't quite as big of a giveaway as I thought, haha. If you're interested in trying to figure out the plot before the characters, all the psychic bullshit is what you should be paying attention to.

Also, Absol is very precise in her wording, and what I understand as the "twist" of this story (it's not much of a twist, way more important for the characters than anyone reading) relates to something the child's misunderstood for the entire story so far about something she told it.
