273 - Under the Tuscan Sun (Patreon Selects)
Tumblr media
This week, our Patreon Selects episodes continue and they're staying in Europe! One of our sponsors has selected for us an Oscar nomination follow-up star vehicle for the divine Diane Lane, 2003's Under the Tuscan Sun. Loosely adapted from Frances Mayes' memoir, the film follows Lane as a new divorce gifted a Tuscan vacation who decides to feel the rain on her skin (no one else can feel it for her! only she can let it in!) and buys a Tuscan home to uproot her life. Fresh off an Unfaithful Best Actress nomination, the film launched in the fall but was quickly reduced to romcom fare unworthy of awards.
This episode, we talk about Lane's career leading up to the critical groundswell that resulted in her Oscar nomination. We also talk about Lindsay Duncan going all La Dolce Vita, contemporary production design, and the 2003 Golden Globes Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy lineup.
Topics also include being Gay and Away at the Taco Bell hotel, Grey's Anatomy, and the incoming Oscar nominations!

When and how did the proposal happen?
Ronen: "There is a very famous hotel in Portofino where they shot La Dolce Vita, it's one of the most historic, most beautiful hotels, and I thought, ‘What better place to propose to the love of my life than this place?’ We went to the famous pool restaurant which I had rented out with one table decorated with candles and roses.”
Jessica: "I was like, ‘Look, someone did a special table for somebody, that's so nice!’"
Ronen: "Then I had to look over and say, ‘That's where we're sitting.’ She was completely shocked. The champagne came out and within two minutes I knew I couldn't wait any longer. I've been waiting for this moment for so long. I immediately got down on one knee and I could barely squeak out the first couple of words and I just started hysterically crying."

"Buongiorno amore mio.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Wrote this as a contribution to the @phoreverhome_zine project (hence the short word count) Would recommend checking out the full zine here if you'd like to see some *adorable* UwU phanart
Inspired by Phorever Home: a Dan and Phil Phanzine by @Im_Not_OKei
Summary: Phil plans a surprise engagement during their vegas trip at the Bellagio hotel. Dan is head over heels, smitten, Phil Trash #1
Word Count: 667 words
Read on AO3 via the link below or keep scrolling to read on tumblr.
Part 1 - Reminiscing Dan POV
Dan stared ahead as the vocal stylings of Moses Sumney rang out, ‘ I just wanna make out in my car…’ Cornelia’s road trip playlist was impeccable; as he bopped along to the rapping of Martyn’s index fingers against the steering wheel, he could only wonder how Martyn managed to tap on-beat and drive without careening off the I-10 highway.
He turned to his right to look at Phil who was leaning against the headrest, eyebrows furrowed with his hand raised to his forehead. Despite Phil’s clear discomfort, Dan couldn’t help but smile: Phil had spent many road trips crouched in this same position during ‘ The Amazing Tour is Not On Fire ’.  He reached into his backpack for the motion sickness kit he’d packed in anticipation of this.
Dan brushed his fingers lightly against Phil’s shoulder and felt his breath hitch in his throat once their eyes connected. The kit lay forgotten on his lap as Dan found himself transported to a memory…
'I think you're crazy,' he'd mumbled. ‘ For loving me, for being so perfectly you, for being here .’ were left unsaid.  'Bear,' had been Phil's simple, whispered response. But as Dan looked up into those grey-blue eyes, gazed upon that crooked smile, and stroked a finger along that slight stubble, he’d heard so much more.
‘Oh the kit!’ Phil exclaimed. Jarred back to the present, Dan removed a water bottle and crackers from the pack.
Phil held onto Dan’s hand as he accepted the items, ‘What would I do without you?’
But as Phil smiled that quirky smile, with his tongue poking out the side, Dan knew he was the one who would be lost without Phil.
~+~
Part 2 - The Proposal Phil POV
Phil had scarcely been able to concentrate despite the enthralling performance by the Cirque du Soleil. He’d been on edge since they’d arrived at the Bellagio, but tonight his anxiety was at its zenith. He fiddled with the velvet box in his pocket as he watched Dan walk ahead. He was gesturing wildly, deeply engaged in his conversation with Martyn. Phil couldn’t help but admire how well Dan filled out his retro biker jacket; the blue jacquard panels shimmered beautifully against his skin.
Phil felt a hand fall lightly on his elbow. ‘Hey, how are you feeling?’ asked Cornelia softly.
He leaned into her presence, lulled by the comforting tone of her voice. ‘Yeah uh,’ he replied, ‘just a little nerv
He watched Martyn lead Dan to the ‘ La Dolce Vita ’ display at the Bellagio’s conservatory, as planned. He felt his heart quicken and paused to take a breath as the dread started to build in that hauntingly familiar way. He was considering calling everything off when Cornelia squeezed his elbow and offered a warm smile of encouragement. Phil squeezed her arm in return and gave a firm nod.
Cornelia cued to the violinist in the corner as Phil approached Dan beneath the canopy of lemon tree branches on the East bed. As he kneeled, Phil focussed his thoughts on the faint smell of wisteria and citrus in the garden, the vibrant green of cypress trees, and the shocked face of the man he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.
Phil reached for the small box in his pocket to reveal a modest sapphire ring. Dan gasped, ‘Is that violinist playing Toxic?!’
Phil chuckled, his nerves instantly dissipating.
‘You beat me to it,’ Dan complained, ‘I was planning to propose in Japan.’
Phil couldn’t help but feel smug at that, he’d suspected Dan would try to pull something like that on him. ‘Well, what do you say?’ he asked almost impatiently.
‘You, me, and eternity? That’s just ace.’
Only Dan could manage that intoxicating balance of beautiful and infuriating, Phil could feel the tears start to build as he rose and pulled his fiance into him. Their lips crashed and his hand reached instinctively for that spot on the small of Dan’s back, holding him dear.

I found a notebook I had misplaced for a number of years, A trip I took in 2010. Chock full of random notes I scribbled down while relaxing in a hotel room at the end of my day. I recall sending some emails to friends using a distillation of these fragments.
Tumblr media
I took a few photos at the Fellini exhibit, mentioned in the notes above, but owing to the low light levels they were all blurry due to camera shake, like the one second exposure of the poster for La Dolce Vita.

Jewelry House Histories: Bulgari
Bulgari – or Bvlgari – is synonymous with the glamour and decadence of Rome, the city where the jewelry and watch brand was established in 1884 by the Greek silversmith Sotirio Voulgaris (Bulgari). It soon thrived, thanks to British tourists who were visiting Rome as part of their Grand Tour.
Some telltale signs of Bulgari’s design are the references to imagery, architectural details and silhouettes from ancient Rome. The Bulgari logo is often spelt Bvlgari, in reference to the classical Italian alphabet.
Snapshot of Bulgari Jewelry over the last century
Sotirio Bulgari’s sons, Giorgio and Costantino, joined him in the family business and proposed a new direction away from watches and silverware, and towards high jewelry. The creations of the 1920s reflected French high jewelry traditions – platinum and diamonds were the order of the day, with a focus on Art Deco designs. The following decade saw more geometric diamond motifs, often set together with coloured gemstones. But by the 1940s, the house had established its own style with plenty of yellow gold, geometrically abstract designs and graceful curves.
With the vibrance of the ’60s, Bulgari brought a pop of colour to contemporary jewelry. The focus, for Bulgari, was on the visual impact created by their jewelry, regardless of the value of the gemstones. This focus on unparalleled color and pattern set Bulgari apart from their more conventional contemporaries.
As Rome’s reputation as a glamorous party town rose, so Bulgari bold, trend-setting statement jewelry became sought-after by an international clientele. The early 1970s took the maison to Europe and the US, where the next generation of the Bulgari family made sure that the brand catered to the tastes of modern women. Iconic pieces from the ’70s include the Bvlgari Bvlgari watch, released in 1977 and the Trombino ring.
The ’80s ’90s saw Bulgari launch versatile, modular pieces designed to be worn from morning to night, such as the Parentesi collection, which borrowed a detail (the travertine junctions) from the Eternal City’s pavements for its signature motif.
Throughout its history, unusual materials, such as steel, porcelain, silk and even wood, have elevated Bulgari creations above many of its contemporaries. The house’s bold use of colorful gemstones was much admired – and imitated.
Today, the brand excels at everything from fragrances and luxury hotels to high-end watches. When it comes to the brand’s timepieces, instantly recognizable, iconic designs meet outstanding mechanical workings. The maison has partnered with Girard-Perregaux, one of the finest Swiss watchmaking manufacturers, for its technical work. It also acquired the Swiss watch companies, Daniel Roth and Gerald Genta, among others, to help it produce luxury watches with quality elements and mechanisms.
A Hollywood Hit
During the booming decades of the 1950s and 1960s, Rome – and Bulgari – were put firmly on the map by films such as Roman Holiday and La Dolce Vita. During their time in Rome, stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman and Grace Kelly discovered the Bulgari shop in Via Condotti and became ardent fans of the maison. Bulgari jewels have since been spotted in Hollywood films, such as Casino with Sharon Stone and Mission Impossible starring Tom Cruise. Spectacular pieces have been trotted down red carpets at the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes and film festivals from Cannes to Venice.
Elizabeth Taylor glitters in Bulgari
The actress Elizabeth Taylor glittered in Bulgari jewels – it was one of her favourite maisons. The sumptuous Bulgari pieces perfectly matched her aesthetic and were a prominent part of her vast jewelry collection. She visited the Condotti store often, especially while filming Cleopatra in Rome. Many of the pieces were gifted to her by her husband, Richard Burton. Taylor’s jewelry collection went under the hammer in 2011, setting records for the most valuable sale of jewelry in auction history. Bulgari bought back nine pieces, which have become part of the Bulgari Heritage Collection.
Key Designs
Bulgari “Serpenti”
In ancient Rome, the coiled serpent symbolized wisdom and immortality. Bulgari has employed the snake motif throughout its history, using it in their lavish, polished yellow gold snake wrist watches, first designed in the 1940s, its diamond-encrusted head covering the dial of the timepiece. This design has since undergone multiple incarnations in various metals, from gold to steel, and can now be wrapped around the wrist several times.
