"We wrote her that way": Entrapta and autistic representation in She-Ra

Entrapta forgives Catra for exiling her to Beast Island at the end of Season 3, and being a jerk to her in the past, in the episode, "Taking Control"

In November of last year, I wrote about Entrapta, one of my favorite characters in the animated series, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, because she is morally gray character, a hacker, and a "smart and quirky chaotic neutral icon." In that post, I examined her character in the first four seasons of the show, noting that she is an autistic character who makes her own decisions, acting as "a princess with prehensile hair who is [also] a scientist and inventor always trying to tinker with ancient technology. " I also criticized some who claimed she is a "hurtful" representation of autistic people, noting that she is sweet and underappreciated, pointing out that Bow is the only one who sees her sympathetically, and that she stays in the Fright Zone by choice. I further noted that she is dedicated to science and research, sticks up for Catra when Hordak wants to send her to Beast Island, and stated that when she is rescued from Beast Island in Season 4 she "goes with them back to Bright Moon because of data and scientific discovery, not because of friendship or anything else." I additionally made a comparison between her and Peridot in Steven Universe, with storyboarder Maya Peterson (the same one who said Peri is asexual and aromatic), said she doesn't interpret Peridot as autistic. I intend this post will be an update from my previous post, talking about her in the show's final (and fifth) season, which started streaming on May 15th.  If you haven't see the new season, please do so because this post is filled with spoilers! It is important to write about this because series creator ND Stevenson confirmed that Entrapta was autistic, basing Entrapta on an autistic person on the SPOP crew, a full-time storyboard artist named Sam Szymanski. [1]

Most of the commentary about the new season has focused on the mutual confession of romantic feelings by Catra and Adora, shipped as Catradora, who kiss in the show's final episode, with their love literally saving the world (and universe) from destruction. This is the right focus, while some have noted the other LGBTQ characters confirmed like Seahawk (whose ex is named Falcon), Kyle and Rogelio, the relationship between Perfuma and Scorpia, or the romance between Bow and Glimmer, among many other topics. [2] After all, as Lindsey Mantoan, wrote in a CNN opinion, She-Ra is the "best queer representation on television." In the process, however, little has been said about Entrapta. In fact, of many reviews I looked at, only a few even mentioned her in their analyses, despite her pivotal role in at least part of the season. [3] While one reviewer for A.V. Club (Shannon Miller) claimed that the show trades an in-depth look at Entrapta's treatment for "heroics," and saying there could have been "more reflection from those who have outwardly had more difficulty understanding Entrapta’s mindset, " another, for Forbes, Linda Maleh, says the opposite. Maleh argues that Entrapta gets a lot "a lot of screen time as she learns to balance her love of machines with her desire to connect with people," calling her entirely "adorkable," and that her character gives viewers some of the most touching and funny moments of the show. I tend to agree with Maleh more than Miller. Similarly, I think that Heather Hogan of Autostraddle makes a valid point in saying that Wrong Hordak brought out the charming parts of Entrapta, stating that it was nice to see her understanding how to work alongside friends, express herself better, and her feelings, while the princesses "start to understand her for who she really is." Although it is positive these reviewers noted her role in the season, there is clearly a lot more going on about Entrapta than what Miller, Maleh, or Hogan talk about.

Entrapta, who is between the ages 28 and 30, appears in every single episode of the fifth season, apart from episode 10, can be said to be the "smartest" character in the series. In the previous season,  she was rescued from Beast Island by Bow, Adora, and Swift Wind, reminded about her true friends while ancient technology continued to pull her in. In contrast, in this season, she struggles to find a place among the other princesses, as highlighted in the episode "Launch." Since Entrapta has been a morally grey character in the past, it makes sense that the princesses are a bit distrustful. Even Emily, with her name as an obscure reference to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, turns away from Enttapta when it appears that she cares more about tech "than saving their friend." After that episode, the princesses begin to understand her better. She later helps out Adora and Bow save Glimmer from Horde Prime's flagship. Glimmer is transported through space by Catra, in her first likely selfless act. She then helps Adora, Bow, and Glimmer successfully rescue Catra from Prime's flagship, called the Velvet Glove. She even does surgery on Catra, removing the chip in her neck. She, additionally, forgives Catra after she apologizes for treating her terribly. As a reminder, at the end of Season 3, Catra panicked when Entrapta tried to warn Hordak to not start the portal. She then orders her to be sent to Beast Island. She is shocked with what she is done (as is Scorpia by this cruel act against her), beginning her descent down a "dark, dangerous path." Basically, Catra blamed Entrapta for her own mistakes.

In the rest of the season, Entrapta continues to help the princesses and tries to disable all the chips before being transported to Prime's flagship. She apologizes to everyone when captured by Prime, literally the head of a cult of mindless drone soldiers. Whether Entrapta has platonic or romantic feelings for Hordak, the latter shipped as Entrapdak by one of of the show's story editors (and some other fans), it is up the viewer. [4] As some fans noted back in March, a few months before the recent season premiered, it is clear that there is "some chemistry between her and Hordak" and some even call their relationship "sweet," although I'm not sure I would go that far. In any case, it does mean that Hordak is more than a one-dimensional villain like in the original She-Ra: Princess of Power series in the 1980s which was used to sell action figures for Mattel. Through some searching, I did find an interview with Stevenson (complete with unfortunate spelling errors by the person who wrote the transcript of her interview responses) where he specifically talks about how Entrapta grows in this season:

I think with a character like Entrapata [sic], we sort of live in a little bit of her own version of the world that the other characters don’t always understand...It's not only Entrapta learning how to empathize and connect with others, but also for others to learn how to empathize and connect with her. And so I think with both sides of that, we see [Entrapta] growing this season. What I think has always been [Entrapta's] strength is that, even if she might struggle with communicating her feelings or understanding other characters when they’re communicating their feelings to her, I think her strength as a character -- kind of her superpower -- is that she sees humanity in everything. Not just in humanoid or organic creatures, but she sees humanity in robots. She sees humanity in the AI that drives ships. She sees humanity in one clone in a million identical clones and knows their personality and knows who they are and knows how to connect with them... I think we see her make a lot of progress on that front, but then we also see her. I think she does more than almost any other character in humanizing characters who have never been humanized before by anyone....It's so much of what is the heart of this show. It seems like that’s what makes Etherea [sic] special in general is that everyone who comes to Etherea [sic] isn’t getting broken by it a little bit. They end up making connections and falling in love in ways they never thought were possible. And I think Entrapta really embodies that."

Furthermore, as a morally grey character, who played a "big hand in some of the Horde-led destruction on Etheria," she still cares about her friends. While some may question her renewal of the individuality or "humanity" of Hordak, becoming his first genuine friend, later leading him to turn against Horde Prime, she clearly had a "unique perspective on the world that not everyone understands." Earlier in the season, when she encounters Hordak before he is freed from Prime's control, in an attempt to access the computer control center of Horde Prime so she can disable the mind-control chips, helped by Swift Wind, she tells Hordak “remember, your imperfections are beautiful!” When the essence of Prime is destroyed by She-Ra, he is freed, and is soon reunited with Entrapta, who says that she is "so glad" to see him back.

By this point, it is clear that Entrapta is not the "worst kind of villain" as some described her and is more than a person who "only cares about the pursuit of knowledge," no matter the consequences, as Brett Elderkin described her, also calling her a "mad scientist," but rather just a morally grey character, or perhaps "chaotic neutral" to use a Dungeons and Dragons term. That brings me to a recent article by Megan Crouse in Den of Geek appropriately titled "She-Ra: In Defense of Entrapta." She states that while Entrapta occasionally embraces the trope of not caring about "people who might be hurt when dangerous experiments go wrong," she is much more than that, and dramatically changes in Season 5. Crouse added that Entrapta in Season 4 was not truly happy as a hermit on Beast Island, although she maintained her fascination with science, missing people, and afraid that "her friends will inevitably abandon her." She then talks about the episode "Launch" where Entrapta's conflict with the fellow princesses reaches a boiling point, putting others in danger, with her actions "extremely, comically risk," wanting to win at no matter the cost. After Mermista accuses Entrapta of not caring about any of them, and not being trustworthy as a result, she responds by saying she didn't realize they were angry at her. She then retreats to apologizing, one of her many defensive mechanisms, stating

I’m not good at people, but I am good at tech. I thought maybe if I could use tech to help you, you’d like me. But I messed that up, too.

As she barrels ahead, Mermista pulls her back by her hair (just as Horde Prime does later), and is finally convinced of her good nature when Entrapta declares “Glimmer needs us!,” indicating she is willing to put herself in harms away as much as anyone else. As Crouse further outlines, while Entrapta's action is similar to what she has done in the past, as she begins to explain how and why she acts and feels the way she does, gaining more friends along the way. Even so, she still clearly has trouble reading people, which is not "magically cured throughout this season." While Crouse says that it would "have been nice to see Entrapta really feel the consequences of her dangerous actions," I would counter and say she did grow a lot in this season. On the other hand, I agree with Crouse that it is "sweeter to see her pursue science and friendship" than just tinkering with technology on Beast Island. While I can see why she argues that Entrapta is annoying, she makes a good point that Entrapta is not letting her "loner tendencies turn into complete isolation, but nor does she have to completely change who she is." As a side note, Entrapta cuts her own bangs, as Stevenson said once, although this is terrifying considering her power tools! Yikes!

Now, lets get to the elephant in the room: Entrapta flirting with technology. The first time this happens is in the episode "Launch," declaring flirtatiously: "Hello. You are very technologically advanced" before almost being blown to smithereens by the Horde robot. Then, in the episode "Stranded" she says: "Darla and I are going to spend some quality time together," again in a flirtatious manner, leading to confused looks from Adora, Bow, and Glimmer. Now, robosexuality, a term seemingly coined and/or popularized by Futurama, means the "love and/or sexuality between a humanoid and a robot." From these two interactions you could say that she is robosexual. Let us consider what Stevenson said about Entrapta: that she is learning to connect and empathize with others, and sees humanity in everything, knowing their personality and how to connect with them. One fan put Entrapta very well, remarking that she is a functional adult who can make full decisions, arguing that she is "chaotic good with a bad moral compass who likes to fuck space nazis," saying she makes bad decisions. I can agree with that to an extent, except to say that it makes sense why she ended up working for the Horde, since the princesses had not really liked/understood her before that point. Another fan noted, correctly, that Entrapta (and Scorpia) but had to earn the trust of the princesses in their own ways.

[1] In her first tweet, she responded to a fan who asked if entrapta is autistic, saying that "many of us relate to her and love her so much and it would mean a lot if we could get confirmation of her being autistic." She responded by saying: "yes, we wrote her that way. One of our crewmembers was on the spectrum and related to her specifically, and had a huge part in shaping her story and character!" She further explained that "the crew member was board artist @Sizzlemanski. His first episode was Entrapta’s introductory episode in season 1 [System Failure] and he had a HUGE hand not only in defining her physical acting, but also pitched me several ideas for her arc early on! He basically became our go-to for Entrapta."

[2] As Stevenson stated on Twitter, he hopes that in the future we stop thinking about LGBT representation as a "race or a contest" and as more of a "community effort to uplift voices that have not yet had their stories told," with each individual piece of media as a "broadening of horizons."

[3] When ND Stevenson was interviewed by comicbook.com, Nerdist, Gizmodo, A.V. Club, L.A. Times, Polygon, Digital Spy, GLAAD, EW, and CBR, the interviewers understandably focused on the Catra/Adora slow-burn relationship, but never asked a question about Entrapta. One interviewer for Collider asked "...So we’ve got Bow and Glimmer, we’ve got Sea Hawk and Mermista, we’ve even got kind of an interesting relationship with Entrapta and Hordak, and then obviously CatrAdora. But did you know from the beginning how everybody was going to pair off or is that something that kind of developed over time?" but he never specifically replied about the "relationship with Entrapta and Hordak." Reviews of the show in The Mary Sue, PinkNews, LA Times, tor.com, and ScreenRant do not even mention Entrapta at all!

[4] On Instagram, ND Stevenson said that Entrapta would follow Hordak to Beast Island as his community services for his crimes and as a result, the "two would develop a romantic relationship and reunite with the bot she left behind in Season 4, keeping her promise to return," so it sounds like it is leaning toward romance, as noted in a summary on her fandom page. Also see Emily Hu who noted they did board a scene with Entrapta and Hordak but it never ended up being included. There is clearly a connection between Entrapta and Hordak, but I'm still not sure if it is romantic or friendly. It could really go either way.

I think the urban dictionary and Wikipedia definitions are pretty good tbh! It's basically a marketing technique where mass media creators add subtle cues that their characters may be queer but never actually make them canonically queer. That way, they can attract queer fans and allies—who are basically starved for representation—with the "promise" that there will eventually be canon rep, while also avoiding the wrath of their queerphobic audience.

Sherlock and Merlin from the BBC are the most well known examples, at least that I know of. I've only seen the term queerbaiting used in the context of hinting at romance/attraction between characters of the same gender, but I'm sure this also happens with trans characters as well as with other identities.

The thing is, when shows, movies, etc. hint at something that is accepted in society, like a straight* relationship, the audience doesn't need to question or analyse it. It's understood by everyone that those hints will follow through and those characters will be some brand of canon. Even if they don't end up together, their relationship will definitely be explored in some way. Why would those hints be there if not? That'd be poor storytelling.

But that's not true for things that aren't acceptable by society's standards, and in particular for queer themes. Following the example of ships, if two men or two women share intense looks, have moments of vulnerability with each other, or clearly display intense emotions for the other, there is absolutely no guarantee that anything beyond that will ever happen; that the characters will even acknowledge those emotions. In fact, in fandom spaces, anyone who DARES point out the clear chemistry between the characters—which is often being portrayed in the same ways as it's usually shown between straight characters—will have to face the wrath of all the homophobic fans of that media, who'll tell them they're trying to turn a good friendship into a queer one for their own personal agenda.

This happened with Princess Bubblegum and Marceline in Adventure Time, for example. They didn't become canon until the last episode of the show, where they kissed on the lips. Think about it. Through the show, it had been shown that the shirt Marceline gave PB held more emotional value that a plushie Marceline had owned for a thousand years that the man who rescued her during the apocalypse and raised her, only to lose himself to a curse and abandon her, had given her. Through the show, they are shown wearing clothes that belong to the other, blushing when looking at each other, singing about their feelings for the other... Hell, it's canon that they were really REALLY close before the events of the show, but PB's need to care for her kingdom made her push Marcy away. There was even a whole miniseries about Marcy becoming a mortal for a few days and growing up enough as a person that she was finally at a point in her life where she and PB could be equals and could finally "be together forever".

AND THEY STILL NEEDED TO KISS ON THE LIPS TO BECOME CANON.

Why do we have to analyse every single frame of a show and argue and write entire essays to "prove" our ship is canon before they kiss on the lips, when straight ships only have to look at each other for 3 seconds once and everyone already knows they'll be canon?

And yes, I say "on the lips" for a reason. After Ruby kissed Sapphire's face several times in a row while she lifted her off the floor in the last episode of season 1 of Steven Universe, homophobes on the Internet bullied literally anyone who dared imply they were anything more than siblings, or perhaps really good friends.

I mean, for fuck's sake. In Voltron, Keith told Shiro he loved him—he loved him—after a super intense battle where Keith risked his life to save Shiro from himself—and they STILL didn't become canon! It was the Bubbline argument all over again, except this time, instead of arguing with homophobes on Instagram about how, no, they were NOT just really good friends, we had to argue with antis on twitter and tumblr about how NO, that is NOT brotherly love! Ffs!!!!!

This has turned into a 3am ramble, but my point is that the way so many mass media creators capitalise off of queer identities while not making an ounce of effort to normalise our identities isn't just disgusting and queerphobic, it's also fucking dangerous. Because it teaches homophobes they're right when they silence us and tell us we're making things up—it teaches them that queer people identifying with their favourite characters are, in fact, forcing queer identities onto those very straight characters. It teaches them that they're rational and we're emotional.

And it's so fucking exhausting.

(Shoutout to Adventure Time and Steven Universe for making the wlw ships canon, though!!! But yeah, I used them as examples of how explicit our representation needs to be in order to count, and how this can be used in order to queerbait viewers—to give just enough hints that something SHOULD happen to attract a queer audience, but then never follow through and have the rest of your viewers be completely okay with that).

It shocks me over and over again when I come across blogs that extremely aggressively, absolutely HATE LOK, Korra, korrasami and practically every character and aspect of the show. I have to share this horror with others because these are just a small part of the awful views from that blog (supposedly feminist and lesbian), interestingly, attitudes about LOK and korrasami were mostly positive or at least neutral in 2014-2015, and then abruptly changed sometime in the middle of last year which coincides with LOK finally being on Netflix, I will probably respond to if I am in the mood for a toxic discussion...

I have heard good things about the Kyoshi novels! Unfortunately, LOK is the drop of shit that has poisoned the entire water supply. All ATLA-related works are going to have to be LOK compliant now, which is so deeply restrictive and contradictory to what I liked about ATLA in the first place. I feel like pre-canon stuff is safer (and again, heard AMAZING things about what FC Yee has done with a pre-ATLA world), but I guess I’m too cynical to get really invested in any more ATLA stuff anymore.

Five Years of Universe Falls Celebration!

Well ya’ll, this September will mark 5 years, half a decade since I started writing Universe Falls. And in light of that, I wanted to share that milestone with all of you with another celebration! The whole zine thing last year went a little... less great than expected, so I decided to make this announcement a lot sooner so people can get started working on submissions for it a lot sooner! 

So how’s this years celebration going to work, you ask? Well its sort of similar to what was done for the 3rd year anniversary. Each week of September will have a different UF-related theme and for each of those themes, you’re free to create whatever you’d like in line with them (fics, art, HCs, general thoughts/feelings/opinions, any other creative work you’d like to submit). This year’s themes are all focused on what I consider to be the very heart of UF itself, its characters, specifically certain sets of them. Those sets (and the weeks that fall in line with them) are as follows: 

Week 1 (Aug. 30-Sept. 5): Mystery Kids: We’ll start the month off celebrating everyone’s favorite plucky set of precocious youngsters! The focus here is on our beloved Mystery Kids: Dipper, Mabel, Steven, and Connie (and Pacifica if you’d like to include her in the group as well). This also includes any of the MK specific fusions: Stevonnie, Stepper, Maven, Convenper, Dipevebel, Mabonnven, Stonipbel, and so on ^_^

Week 2 (Sept. 6-12): Gems: A week to celebrate Gemkind, both good and bad, Crystal and Homeworld. Anything goes here, from Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl, to Lapis and Peridot and Jasper, to the Off Colors, the Diamonds’ Pearls, Bismuth, even Gems that haven’t appeared at all yet like Spinel or Amber! You can focus on your favorite(s) or on a bunch of them, whichever you’d like, its all free game. And once again, this includes any and all fusions, even fusions that might not happen in UF canon itself. 

Week 3 (Sept. 13-19): Humans: To celebrate all of the unique and varied humans that appear throughout UF, from Stan and Ford, to Greg, to Wendy and Soos, Lars and Sadie, even the most obscure side characters are all game here! You can write or draw them interacting any way you please :) 

Week 4 (Sept. 20-26) Villains: A time to honor the evil side of UF. You can have your pick of Bill Cipher himself, or maybe you favor the Great Diamond Authority instead! Or perhaps on a lesser scale you’d like to have some fun with the likes of Gideon or Jasper, even a more obscure baddie like a corrupted Gem or one of GF’s several antagonistic monsters. There’s plenty for you to choose from when it comes to UF!

Bonus week! (Sept. 27-Oct. 3) Animals/Magical/Inter-dimensional creatures: Because there’s so many other characters besides just those four groups this is kind of the catch-all for everything else. Maybe you’d like to create a tribute to our beloved pink friends Lion and Waddles? Or examine any theories about the role the Axolotl might play in UF’s future? Or draw a lovely portrait of Jheselbraum the Unswerving? You’re free to tackle whatever doesn’t fall within the above groups right here ^_^

Now, keep in mind that you’re free to work within whatever AU or set of circumstances you’d like for each of these weeks. Like say you wanted to do week one with the base UF MK, but then week 2 you wanted to do something with the Swap Crystal Gems, that’s fine! Feel free to be as free and flexible as you’d like with this. You can also do things like pay homage to your favorite pre-existing scenes from UF or make predictions to upcoming scenes and such. Also, these themes aren’t mutually exclusive. If you’d like to write a drabble that involves a little crossover between these weeks, such as the MK interacting with one of the bad guys or something, that’s perfectly fine! It’s something that can be released in either week so that’s totally up to you. :) Most ships (appropriate ones at least) are also acceptable to be factored in here. 

As for the specifics when it comes to submissions, you can submit stuff either to me personally or you can post things to your own blog and tag me or PM me links since I wanna collect everyone’s work and show it off! Or if you’re on the UF Discord, I’ll be reopening the UF celebration channel for submissions to be posted there! But for now, you’ve got about a month to start planning so go ahead and get to it! I’ll be immensely looking forward to seeing what you all come up with this time around (especially in light of UF’s most recent bundle of game-changing chapters... ;) As always, if you have any questions about all this, feel free to ask! Anyone’s welcome to participate so please, don’t  hesitate to let your creative juices flow! Have fun! :D

And that’s...the show.

What a clever way to get Lake off the train.  On multiple levels!  Not only was it clever in-character, but her escape came from her accepting her nature at long last--which was what would have brought her own number down to zero.  That’s such an excellent way to end her journey--truly, she was the same as a passenger the whole time.

That was a good finale.  Not the action-packed ending that season 1 got, but it didn’t need to be, really.  It was different from Tulip’s journey in ways where a bigger action sequence than what we got wouldn’t have been appropriate.  In fact, the fight with Sieve feels kind of like an afterthought--it wasn’t obviously, it tied off an important loose end and gave Alan Dracula something to do in the final two episodes, but it didn’t really feel like a proper focus of the episode.

Showing off One-One’s weird blue-and-orange morality system was really cool.  Watching him actually get trapped in logic loops was fascinating, and I think he was used VERY well here.

Alan Dracula was a fun sideshow character, but often felt like he was just there for the animators and writers to play around with, rather than an essential part of the team like Atticus and One-One were in season 1.

Jesse was a good deuteragonist!  Shut up, Tumblr spellcheck, that’s a word.  Jesse’s journey was simple--come to terms with the fact that he and his friends were bullies, and it was very deftly done.  The fact that the train reorders its cars and constructs them for individual passengers’ journeys makes it interesting that his final obstacle was confronting the Apex--the train even works other passengers into its plans.  Which, ironically, makes the Apex more denizen than passenger.  Anyways, Jesse’s journey was simple and well-handled, which is good because he wasn’t actually who the story was about.

That would be Lake.  Mirror Tulip.  Horseradish, as I’ve been tagging her since season 1.  The Chrome Car was my second-favorite episode of season 1, due to excellent character drama, excellent horror, and excellent writing all around.  I remember wishing very much that Lake had joined Tulip on her journey--clearly, the people writing the show wanted to keep telling her story, too, because we got a whole season of it.  Lake’s journey of self-discovery and self-actualization was a really fascinating one.  Watching her slowly come out of her prickly shell until she was finally ready to accept herself for who she was was an excellent journey.  I really do think it’s SUCH good writing that she basically got her own number down to zero right when she got One-One to let her off the train.

Mace and Sieve turned out to be excellent villains, as well--Mace more than Sieve, really, but Mace got more focus and had more presence, and rightfully so.  My favorite episode of the season focuses on him and Tulip, after all.  What an excellent bastard.

All in all, a good season, but not quite as strong as the first one.  That’s not a low bar to fail, though.  Excellent work all around, and I’m delighted with the ending.

The final episode just wasn’t as strong an ending as season one’s though, and wasn’t the best episode in season 2 by a couple places.  The Tape Car was creepier and focused on horror, which I liked a lot, and The Wasteland was just fantastic.  It also has to compete with some VERY strong episodes in season 1--which, again, is not a low bar to fail.  All in all, I’d place The Number Car at my new #3 for season 2, between The Lucky Cat Car (which was very funny, but didn’t have the emotional or dramatic stuff The Number Car did) and The Tape Car (which I’ve already covered), as well as my new #7 overall, between The Lucky Cat Car and The Cat’s Car, which did drama and horror VERY well.

That’s it for Infinity Train, at least until we maybe get a third season!  In a couple days, I’m going to make a post on my Patreon asking for show suggestions for what to replace Infinity Train with in the main slots, and then we’ll have the poll to replace it a few days after that.  I’ll keep you posted as to what the results of that are!  In the meantime, up next is going to be this month’s Patron Picks--as usual, I’ll be doing Paranoia Agent, Baccano, and then A Place Further Than the Universe.  After that, we’ll be getting back to She-Ra for a solid while--I’ll be starting Season 2, so stay tuned for that!

2. what is the book you are currently reading or the last one you finished? how’d you like it?

Last book I read was Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer. I was really intrigued and interested by it at first, but by the end it was really dragging with vagueness and a plot that felt like it was being padded by filler words to describe the abstract, and not in ways that felt like it meant anything. By the end, I was so frustrated with the book that I just wiki’d the other two books in the trilogy.

3. how are we feeling about 2021 so far?

It’s alright. Feels like less of a shitshow than 2020, but it still isn’t like, great. Especially with how the pandemic is going, it feels like it might be more of the same but with less T.rump (thank god).

4. name one piece of media that has gone through a recent critical re-evaluation that you really loved to see.

I can’t really think of anything offhand, but the resurgence of Rodger & Hammerstein’s Cinderella has been incredible. I watched that a ton of VHS when I was younger, and it took me ages to find it on blu-ray (which I gifted to someone else). So having it come to Disney+ and get new eyes on it has been great. What a fantastic movie.

5. please describe your character ( for multi, pick one ), badly!

Bikin-clad triple agent has twin clones against biological dad’s wishes. Questionable morals, great rack.

6. what is your favorite scent in the world? describe it!

I love scents that smell clean and not overly floral or sugary. Usually what you find in candles or febreze, something like fresh laundry, what bottlers think the ocean breeze smells like, coconut. I love the smell of sunscreen, so I have a few coconut lotions and body sprays that I love a lot.

7. how involved in politics are you?

Enough to know the general goings-on around the world, and to know what’s affecting the country and my immediate area, but not so much that my life feels like it’s taken up by it.

8. how deep into astrology are you? what’s your sign, babey?!

I love astrology, but I don’t put much stock into it. I use it a lot for character creation, and also to send to my friends and roommate to see if we actually relate to it. I’m a Sagittarius sun and Aries moon - check out all that fire, baybeeee! Also, I’m year of the tiger, so it’s a lot of energy bundled into one person.

9. i want 1 (one) unpopular opinion about food!

Stop shaming people for dumb shit like pineapple on pizza. I don’t like it, but I just don’t like pineapple at all. Instead, shame people who hate broccoli, that’s the real crime.

10. what is a current fad in the rpc community that you dislike?

Double-small type, lots of space between words, extra formatting that doesn’t do anything. The first parts just makes it difficult for a lot of people to even read what your saying, lots of extra spaces just looks like a way to make it look like you’re writing more when it’s actually just a couple of sentences, and extra formatting can be such a strain on the eyes. I have actively not followed blogs that otherwise look promising because the eye strain of trying to read their writing is more than I want to handle.

11. anyways, what’s the hot gossip? i love some drama. online or offline.

My sister works in the packaging department at her job. Not doing actual packaging, she designs the packaging for a few brands of foods, and she helps find suppliers to print and ship the packaging to the people that actually put the product in the packages (take a shot every time I use that word lol). Anyway, two companies were bidding to be the ones to print for my sister’s company, and they decided on company A rather than B. So my sister had to call company B to tell them they didn’t win the bid.

Partway through the conversation, the guy turns away from the phone, and it was obvious he thought he was muted, and he said, “I want to punch these people in the throats,” then turned back to the phone, realized he wasn’t on mute, and immediately hung up. When he called back, since he still had things to work out with my sister, he started by immediately apologizing.

And this is why you always triple check that you’re muted if you’re gonna talk shit.

dream job: Something similar to what I do now but way better! I used to work in infant/toddler child care and that was the best job in the world except the pay was crap, so I went to nursing school in the hopes of finding some sort of work that was roughly medical child care. I am now (finally!) doing the closest work I can find, working as a nurse at a residential facility for kids (or kids-ish - a lot of them are teens and our oldest is 27) with complex medical needs. But I don't actual get to interact with the kids very much and it's not as fun as I hoped, so I want a mish-mash of the best parts of new-job and all the things I miss from early education but with pay equal to or better than new-job. Like, a toddler classroom but all the kids have trachs or seizures or whatever, but it's still a classroom? And I'd be a teacher who happens to be a nurse and provides some nursing care, but I'd be paid like a nurse!

dream trip: I want months to explore Europe with my partner, backpacking at times [cause in dreams I don't have back pain!] and traveling by train and occasionally getting fancy hotel rooms, though in my dream version A) we'd know at least the basics of all the languages; B) it would be super easy to find vegetarian options everywhere we go; C) no one is transphobic to either of us; and D) I still have lots of Euroean internet-friends to meet and hang out with.

Three ships: Excluding tpn because that would be lame, the first that come to my mind are Bones x Kirk - Star Trek, (platonic) Elsa / Anna - Frozen, All Might x happiness - My Hero Academia. Now that I think about it, I've never been much of a shipping person? I personally find platonic relationships much more interesting.

Last song: The Opera - Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812. Since it's quite a long song, I listen to it significantly less than the other songs from the recording- it's still a beautiful song tho.

Last movie: I may be wrong but I think it was J. J. Abrams' Super 8. I remember being very scared by it when I was younger, so I wanted to see if watching it again now it would have still scared me. It didn't, but it was a nice movie nonetheless!

Currently reading: Unfortunately I don't read much for myself during school, and even when it's finished I find it very hard to get back on track; but I really want to read War and Peace so that's probably the one I'm starting next- together with Dostoevsky's Notes from Underground because I can't possibly read just one book at once.

Currently watching: Some things. Avatar: The Last Airbender, Death Note, rewatching Kill la Kill with my cousin; also sporadically watching Steven Universe episodes and Law & Order (the original plus SVU) whenever it plays on TV. As bonus, I just finished watching Japan Sinks and Little Witch Academia. (I hadn't realized until now how many things I was watching and had watched, wow?? I'm glad I didn't waste time.)

Wearing: I've spent more than one hour looking for an imagine of my shirt on the internet, but, as I should have expected, it seems like clothes companies delete the public data about older collections. Anyway, it's a cute, white, very light shirt with short sleeves. It's got thin vertical stripes of various pastel colors and it's made of a kinda rough material I can't seem to identify. Under that there's high-waisted, light blue jeans. I like this outfit, I find it pretty. I like wearing pretty things even when I'm staying home, it makes me feel good about myself.

Favorite song: With no hesitations, No One Else - Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812. The only doubt I have is if I prefer Phillipa Soo's or Denée Benton's version.

Favorite instruments: Probably piano; second place is cello.

Favorite author: Of what? If this is about books, I don't feel like I read enough to give a fair answer, but so far Dostoevsky and Kafka really stuck with me.

Favorite animal sound: Seaguls' squeal!!!! But also lil birdies' chirping.

Aesthetic: Docks!! The seaguls screaming in the air. The sun shining in the blue sky, originating mesmerizing reflects on the sea, like millions of dimonds. All the smells in the world concentrated in just one place. The movement, the life!! So many sights, smells, flavors and feelings mixing together. The ephemeral beauty of catching, for a single moment, the sight of something marvelous and extraordinary, and never getting to see it again, but cherishing this exaggerated memory of that serendipity. The hectic atmosphere of people going to and fro. The concept of connecting different cultures, the concept of leaving for new adventures. Just one place filled with complete strangers all so different, all so unique, where you can disappear - but without losing yourself. I just find harbors neat!

I'm dying inside. This person literally has this post pinned on top of their blog. Imagine having this hatred over a children cartoon.

"Steven universe doesn't come near the level of mastery that the other shows in this image achieved"

Oh yes, Steven universe is so bad that has been praised by critics for its LGBT+ representation and its considered one of the best TV shows for kids out there.

It's such an awful cartoon that has 100% tomato rating and 91% audience score in Rotten Tomatoes.

It's such a terrible cartoon that insipired other creators and companies to make more animated shows with LGBT and diverse characters in it. (Example: The owl house, Adventure time, Kipo and the age of wonderbeasts, She ra reboot).

It's probably the one of the most influential animated series in the last decade, probably a lot more than many of the shows that OP likes.

Leaving the sarcasm aside, i want to talk about some of the shows that OP mentions.

"Kipo and the age of wonderbeasts": I don't know how to explain this to OP but many people who are fans of Kipo are also Steven universe fans. You know why? Because the shows share similar themes.

OP also complained about how Steven tries to solving conflicts without violence. You know who does that too? Kipo from the Kipo and the age of wonderbeasts.

Another cartoon they mention (Hilda) the protagonist Hilda is very much like Steven in many ways. Her empathy important is key to her character.

The owl house: This is show is just in its first season. Yes, it's a good show but it still needs to explore more it's story and concepts to be considered excellent. We still don't know too much about Eda and her sister, the world, if humans used to live with witches.

Steven universe had 5 seasons, one movie and a series epilogue. It was on air from 2013 to 2020. The owl house.. only aired its first season last year (2020). It's a very bad comparison.

What's more: Dana Terrace stated she was a fan of Rebecca Sugar in a interview.

And Hazbin Hotel.. isn't that show hated by half of tumblr demografic? It isn't even a cartoon for a younger audience.

I don't want to include Infinity Train since its writing and themes are a bit different.

The last thing i want to add: I think its very insulting for Rebecca Sugar and the people who worked in hard Steven Universe to dismiss their efforts to include LGBT characters and tackle themes such as trauma this way. The crew literally risk their own show to put a lesbian wedding on TV. Because it used to be hard to include these themes until a few years ago.

I said before and i'd would say it again: Without Steven universe, we won't probably have She ra, Kipo nor the The Owl House today.

We can't continue this idea that "anything from 2-3 years ago is garbage and you are only allowed to like things from 2018 to now" mentality. That just not how art works and never will.
