I often wonder if I would feel differently about The Staircase Scene if I had seen SAF when it first came out in 2016. The first time I saw it was probably around October or November of 2023, and like... the context is different now.
Whatever we want to say about the personal story arcs of these characters (and I know I'm in a tiny minority because, for me, killing Owen does not constitute a satisfying close to Curt's arc, that's totally fine), there is the very real issue of the sociopolitical context that this scene takes place within- both in their time (1961) and in ours.
One very cool thing about SAF is that, in order to understand these characters better, a lot of younger queer folks end up learning about the Lavender Scare, about Executive Order 10450- which officially prohibited gay people from working for the US government- for the first time. That's an incredible, precious thing to me. Yay queer history! It's important!
The show itself never addresses the fact that both the US and UK governments had very public, very brutal campaigns equating homosexuality with communism with being a traitor to your country. But if you want to understand these characters, and especially write fanfiction, you're really incentivized to teach yourself some fundamentally important aspects of queer history.
In the 54 Below concert, before singing Not So Bad, Brian Rosenthal talks about how when they were developing the show they thought N@zis were more or less a thing of the past, that they're fully aware of how differently that song might be taken now after an escalation into a more open embrace of fascism in the US. And they're absolutely right about that.
But I think that's also perhaps an issue with the staircase scene, or at least it is for me. Obviously homophobia and transphobia were not "fixed" in 2016, they were still massive problems resulting in violence and discrimination and brutality. But institutionally, at least, you could look at the situation and point to some things that were gradually getting better.
In 2016 trans youth in my state were legally allowed to receive gender affirming care. In 2024, they are not. It's not that homophobia and transphobia went away and then came back, but there was a very real resurgence of the use of the media and of governmental power to inflict pain on queer & trans people and chase them out of public life- bathroom bans, gender affirming care bans, Don't Say Gay laws, trying to make drag illegal, equating queer and trans people with pedophilia. There has been a big cultural shift back towards the same kind of violent governmental moral panic that our beloved Curt & Owen would have lived under.
Whatever we want to say about these characters and this story (and there's tons of fascinating debate there), there is still the base of a gay man killing his ex-lover ostensibly to protect US foreign policy objectives. Killing the man he loves- or loved, at least- to protect the secret that he is gay. And that hits different for me now.
I watch that scene and it is heartbreaking on a personal level, but its also heartbreaking as a queer person who just wants to scream "your government will destroy you for being gay, you don't owe them shit!"
Owen tries to explain that the surveillance network is happening, that the future won't wait for Curt to catch up. Barb has been saying she's working on the same thing for the US government the entire show, but Curt just kept ignoring her. And I just want to say "Curt, honey, what do you think your government is going to do to you with that surveillance system? Do you think you're useful enough to keep around even though you have sex with men? Because I promise you they will not care."
It feels tragic to me because on some level it seems like Curt would actually be safer with another gay man having control of all the world's secrets than he will be if the government he has dedicated his life to gets their hands on that same technology.
And the thing is, having a tragic ending doesn't make the show bad. This show is great. This scene is spectacular. It makes you think, it makes you feel things, it does all the stuff that great art is supposed to do. Absolutely none of what I'm saying here is meant to denigrate the show as a musical or a story or even a queer story. I hope it doesn't come off as me saying "actually this show is bad," because I don't feel that way at all.
Clearly I live and breathe this show. That's why I spend all my time on here analyzing every scene, every frame, every facial expression. I love this show so much that I can't help but deconstruct it and look at all its component parts- including the sociopolitical context both now and in 1961. Because that context, despite never being explicitly mentioned, is important to our understanding of these characters.
I love these characters so much that it's actually pretty difficult for me to watch A2P7 anymore, because the staircase scene is so emotionally devastating to me that it's hard to try to swing back into that more comedic tone (even though Spy Dance is a certified bop).
I'm not even sure what my point is with all of this, other than to say that Spies Are Forever is a show that is great and fun and funny as written/performed, and becomes gradually more emotionally devastating when you rewatch it or when you understand the subtext of it. When you can engage with the themes of gender and sexuality, surveillance and technology, trauma and trust, and tease out even more satisfying theories around this show.
So yeah. It's a musical. It's about spies.

What's covered by "prose editing"? Do you mean editor's services for articles and original work, SPAG for school work, beta-reading fanfiction, workshopping shitposts, what kind of services are we talking here?
I've edited for each of those media (primary and secondary school; fandom; shitposting), as well as the following:
Technical manuals (Chicago and Microsoft styles)
Newspapers, including strict character limits (AP style)
Copy and editing for research journal submissions (style provided by journal)
Print and digital magazines (style provided by publisher)
University level creative writing composition for short stories and novellas
Novel editing for slush submissions and indie publishing
The specific skills I have on offer include:
Spelling, punctuation and grammar (English-US and English-UK)
Developmental and structural edits
Content editing only for styles or fandoms with which I am already familiar, or for which a style guide is provided.
Redlining and line edits, with fact checks only for non-technical writing
Proofing, including print and digital proofing
Now, for readers who stared at "SPAG" for a second like "wtf does that even mean," here's some extra clarification on what those services are.
SPAG (spelling, punctuation, and grammar) is the most basic type of editing. It can usually be done by a computer automatically, though MS Word's grammar checker is notoriously bad.
Developmental edits are focused on helping the author decide their audience, conform to or break genre expectations, and develop the broad order of story elements.
Structural edits are focused on achieving the goals from development as effectively as possible. In fiction, this is the point at which cuts tend to start, with smaller characters being merged into single, more prominent characters. In technical writing, this is the point at which you determine things like the order in which data will be presented, what needs to be in the introduction rather than methodologies, etc. For writing manuals and documentation, this is the point at which you determine the specific categories and organization you will be using.
Content edits are what most people think of when they think "editor." This is the point at which the finished draft has been organized to the author's satisfaction, and the editor proceeds to go through it looking for style and factual errors. A style error varies based on the medium: something correct for a software manual in MSWG would be wildly wrong for a school essay in MLA or for a fanfic about Supernatural.
I consider informal manuals like Britpickers' Guides to be sufficient for most things in fandom, so if you have anything like that, then I'm happy to do content edits for unfamiliar fandoms too. However, if I am not familiar with a fandoms' canon, I cannot fact check the piece for canon compliance.
Line edits are sometimes called "punch ups" or "redlining." It is not related to the art technique or financial racism law. Line edit is the more common name. This is the point at which an editor goes line by line or paragraph by paragraph through a completed piece to adjust phrasing for maximum impact. If you've never seen a redline for text, here's an example of a redline I did last year:
None still living know what once sat where Refinement now rises from the Bismuth sea. > None alive yet know what once sat where Refinement rises from the Bismuth Sea. Rumors and speculation abound, but the one accepted fact is that the city sprang from the singular will and vision of one woman: the Founder. > Rumors abound, but only one truth is known universally: the city sprang from the will and vision of their singular Founder. No other figure in Refinement commands the same admiration and reverence. > No other figure in Refinement’s history commands more admiration and reverence. Though her name, age, and even species are argued over to this day, some details of her origins and mastery of the stuff of the Bismuth Sea are yet agreed upon. > Her name, age, and even species are as lost as whatever came before the city. Two pale shadows of her legacy remain: the myth of her origin, and the legend of her mastery over the chaotic tides of the Bismuth Sea.
Proofing is the last possible stage in editing, and occurs immediately before printing (traditional media) or publication (digital media). It's your opportunity to double check the piece for minor typos you missed before.
For print media in particular, it's extremely important to proof thoroughly. Once the book is printed, it cannot be changed. And worse, the process of composing a draft into a printable format can introduce errors, with hanging words on blank pages, or words cut off entirely!
For digital media, this is a less mission critical stage, as you can always correct the piece after it is live. There are two major exceptions to this: news writing, and school work. In both these cases, because the damage done by incorrect proofing is high and the opportunity to issue a correction is low, you should always proof schoolwork and news, even if it is submitted/published digitally.
So!
That's all of the editorial services I can offer!
Honestly, seeing it laid out like this, I think $10/1k words is a steal.

Nowhere Else
Tumblr media
(gif is mine)
Prompt(s): "I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be."
Pairing: Matt x Reader
Word Count: 430
Hope you enjoy it! And as always, feedback is appreciated. :)
-----
You rubbed the sleep out of your eyes as you walked down the stairs and met up with Matt in the kitchen, smelling the breakfast from your room, “Why didn’t you wake me?” you asked wearily and Matt turned with a grin.
Walking towards you after tapping the teaspoon on the mug and picking it up, he handed you your usual morning brew. “You looked peaceful. How could I disrupt that?” he smiled before pressing a kiss on your lips. He lingered the kiss for as long as possible before breaking for air and looking deep into your eyes with a look that he always gave you for as long as you could remember.
He turned away, moving back to the cooker so he could finish the breakfast he had been preparing. As you watched him for a moment you couldn’t help but smile as you heard him sing the song playing on the radio under his breath.
You let out a little chuckle which made him stop, a little redness flushing to his cheeks. “No, no, don’t stop.” you smiled as you walked over to him and pulled him towards you by his waist. After a moment of silence between you and a look in your eyes, he gripped you closer to him. “You didn’t have to stay, you know.”
Matt freed one of his hands and placed it on your cheek, “ I can’t think of anywhere else I’d rather be.” he whispered with a smile and kissed you deeply again but you soon had to force yourself to push him away.
“Matt, something’s burning.”
“Shit, the toast.” he replied quickly removing himself for your grip and going back over the the counter of the kitchen. He managed to get the toast from the toaster and held up the very burnt bits of toast which made you laugh once more. “I’m a disaster in the kitchen, aren’t I?” he asked as he threw it in the bin.
You knew he was looking for attention, and that was a little quirk of his that you loved. “I mean you’re no Gordon Ramsey but...” He silenced you with another kiss but again, you broke him off, “Matt, as much as I love your kisses, you’ve got other food on the go and I’d hate to be having to call the firemen out because you’re getting distracted.”
He rolled his eyes and pecked you on the cheek and he grabbed the towel from the surface and threw it over his shoulder.

eirenical’s original content masterpost
OK, so I figured it was about time I started one of these, especially given the fact that my old tag post is so outdated, it’s not even funny.  This is going to be a work in progress because I have a LOT of content to sort through and I will probably start with just linking the big tags, but... we have to start somewhere, I guess?  ^_^
(Note: These are also going to be in backwards chronological order from newest to oldest, and there are going to be repeat posts, especially in the parts that are split by fandom, because those are search links, not tags.)
My meta: #eirenical.meta; #eirenical’s tag meta
My writing: #eirenical.fic; #snippet; #eirenical writes things; #eirenical.headcanons; #writing meme answers; #original fiction
My Edits:  #eirenical.gifs; #eirenical.videos; #eirenical.photosets; #eirenical.photos; #eirenical.screenshots (screen recordings); #eirenical.screencaps
My Fanmixes: #eirenical.fanmixes
(Note #2: I have never been able to figure out how to make tumblr links work on mobile.  None of these do.  Sorry.  :P  If you want to use any of the links in the masterpost on mobile, just open them (or the master post) in a mobile browser; then they should work just fine.)
And behind a cut for the fandom specific stuff, I think.  ^_^

20 Questions Writer’s Edition
@gripefroot, thank you for the tag! 🧡
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
4
2. What’s your total AO3 word count?
150, 310. BUT I only started on AO3 this year. Before my 9 year hiatus from fanfiction, I posted exclusively on my livejournal, which, read at your own risk, I guess?
3. How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
I had to go to my old Livejournal tags for the answer, which is 10 -- ACOTAR, Parks & Recreation, Community, Chuck, Law & Order UK (for some reason, only the UK edition?), Life On Mars, Ashes to Ashes, House, Doctor Who, Harry Potter
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
There are only 4, but, in order, they're:
Bloom & Bone (Elain/Tamlin, Vassa/Lucien) aren't you scared (well that's just fine) (Gwynriel with a side of Emorie) the pilgrim soul in you (Vassien) as the heart grows bolder (Helion/Lady of Autumn)
5. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
I try to respond to all of them, because I really appreciate anybody who takes the time to comment on my writing! I'm not at 100%, but close.
6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Lately, that would be as the heart grows bolder, but I did write some extremely angsty House fic circa 2006 that I hope never again sees the light of day.
7. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Bloom & Bone! After I finished my first draft, I thought it might be too happy, but I stand by it. It's definitely the happiest ending I've ever written, though.
8. Do you write crossovers? If yes, what’s the craziest thing you’ve written?
No, which is kind of funny given that my dream scenario is all of my friends being friends with each other.
9. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
Not that I can remember! Which is kind of wild, given that I just finished writing a big Elain/Tamlin fic and also once wrote Martha/Master Doctor Who fic.
10. Do you write smut? If so what kind?
Yes but tasteful? I wrote my first intense s*x scene where everyone had a good time a few months ago and I loved it. Before that, I'd written either quick scenes or they were extremely literary and no one enjoyed themselves.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
This is embarrassing, but a "friend" once stole a paragraph from one of my fics... and I left them a comment complimenting them on it, only to realize what had happened a few months later. I never spoke to that person again.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
No but if you ever want to translate my fics, that would be amazing!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic?
Once! I'm down to do it again in the future, though.
14. What’s your all time favourite ship?
The thing about me is that I ship every ship when I really think about it.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Nine years ago, I wrote a Community AU where Jeff was Annie's law school professor and only got halfway through -- I still like it but I think too much time has passed.
16. What’s your writing strengths?
Writing beautiful sentences and developing characters.
17. What’s your writing weaknesses?
I hate writing battle scenes and always try and find a way to break them down into smaller pieces or avoid the battle through diplomacy. Anything to avoid having to learn military strategy.
18. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in fic?
This is interesting because a lot of my original fiction deals with Cubans and Cuban-Americans, who speak a lot of Spanish. So I've thought about this issue a lot. I try to only use another language if it's essential to the story or character, or if the word/phrase only exists in that language. For example, in Spanish there's "aprovecha!" which literally translates to, "take advantage of your favorable situation!" and that's just not the same thing. I try to provide translations when it flows in the story, but I don't always do this specifically for Spanish (or French, on the rare occasion when I use it) because it's relatively easy to look up.
19. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Harry Potter, which I now feel weird about given everything we know about JKR.
20. What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
Currently, it's aren't you scared? (well that's just fine). Something about Gwyn really, really clicked for me in that fic, and although I literally wrote it in a morning, I'm very proud of it. I'm working on a longer Gwynriel fic at the moment, and I think it's even better -- I can't wait until it's ready to share.

World building notes:
Logania World-Building
Fanfiction world, also applicable to Gregania, the parallel world with all “the serial numbers filed off”.
* Geography
* Primary imports & exports: none, it’s economically isolated; the city must provide all of its citizens’ needs
* Natural Resources: none, really. They rely solely on thaumatological magic for their resources.
* Without Lord Logan’s imaginenergy, a cosmic force he wields, the city’s placement on a rocky wasteland with dense soil would inevitably force them to move. This is a problem because most of the fauna of the Loganic Isle is incredibly hostile.
* Religion
* Non-denominational Christianity has a religious monopoly on the people, by their own volition. People believe what they want, but the unifying belief is that Jesus was the Son of God and that he died for our sins.
* Logan constantly professes he is ***not*** a god.
* Very rarely do the different denominations clash with each other.
* Achievements
* Most works of art and literature have been migrated from Earth. A majority of people lack the drive to create “Loganic” art or literature.
* Most achievements are either technological or supernatural: e.g. the Comm Watch, a smart watch that can create 3D holograms, or warp rings, bronze rings that can pierce the veil between realities.
* Politics
* It used to be an Absolute Monarchy, then, from Earth Year 2013 to 2015, it had Lord Logan’s advisors elected by direct democracy, now it resembles the UK’s system of government.
* Lord Logan’s still the monarch and can still release executive orders.
* Laws are created by the system of checks & balances identical to that of the USA government.
* Laws are enforced by a police body.
* Economics
* The most valuable resources are foodstuffs, as they’re incredibly hard to come by with the dense soil.
* Silver-standard barter system (Fixed price based on price of silver; however people frequently trade goods for goods).
* Society’s wealth is comparable to most first-world countries.
* Social Structure
* The most important people are the people who have had larger-than-life heroic achievements. Protagonists from shows like Pokémon, W.I.T.C.H., Digimon, or the Original Teen Titans cartoon are in this category. Those who have made “ultimate sacrifices” are honored to the highest degree.
* The least important people are those who deal in “dishonorable acts” (e.g. exotic dancers and “dirty” comedians). These people are viewed with the lowest degree of honor. Protagonists from shows like South Park, Drawn Together, Family Guy, Robot Chicken, Futurama, and the Simpsons are in this category.
* Theses classes of people clash frequently.
* Exception: Stan Marsh of South Park and Coco Bandicoot from Crash Bandicoot have formed a rocky-at-best/nonexistent-at-worst friendship founded on the basis of a dislike of the Pokémon franchise.
* Terra from the Original Teen Titans cartoon is a cover-artist Pop Star. Her album with a cover of Britney Spears's "Oops, I did it again" went multi-platinum in 1 month.
* John Arbuckle of the Garfield comic strips is a freelance guitarist, akin to Slash. He has worked with Deformed (Pokémon Punk-Pop band), Hydra (Electro-rock band from the Hero Factory universe), and The Guardians (Karata from Avatar: The Last Airbender, Misty from Pokémon, Fiona from Zoids, and Sakura Haruno).
* Everyone has their "native technology" and prefers using stuff from that.
* People who have children via an "epilogue" (E.G., Digimon Adventure & Harry Potter) have had their "adult" forms severed from them to take care of their kids.
* People don’t die, even if they've died in their source material. They believe Jesus will give the people true eternal life rather than reviving after 30 minutes of being “dead”.
* Matoro from Bionicle and Anakin Skywalker from Star Wars essentially live off the state’s dime.
* People don't age.
* The analogous G.I. Bill used to be the only option for post-secondary education, before Logan realized he was becoming too war-like.
* Occult Magic is different than Thaumatological Magic.
* No other sapient life other than the Loganic Colonists.
* Those who have had their memories erased or altered have had their memories restored (EG, Terra, the Matoran of Metru/Mata Nui, Ash Ketchum).
* Those who share an actor or voice actor feel a special kinship with each other.
* Characters from Butch Hartman Cartoons, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and Outlander have rebelled against their creators for various reasons.

Thanks Lisa and Anon for answering! I don’t think I really disagree with either of you. I think, we share quite similar views, or at least something quite close to each other. Those answers got me thinking, and gave me a lot of food for thought. It’s not exactly the first time, I’ve pondering this. It always happens, when I am trying to find AU Dramione fics (semi-regular occurrence. I especially enjoy regency Dramione, which compliments HP and the pairing marvelously. As I see it, HP is unconsciously reminiscent of and models certain aspects of wizarding world after Victorian and Edwardian Great Britain). I just cannot help myself with stuff like this.
I imagine, there aren’t many people who find something like this riveting to think about or discuss, so thank you for indulging me. After all, people get by splendidly, without ever considering what is the formal definition(s) of AU. In almost anything people can operate exceedingly well by just going with their their gut instincts (kind like, I know what AU is, when I see it serves people well).
I’ve seen roughly three different main interpretations for the term AU, each with some internal variations and nuances. Differences are mainly on how encompassing they are, as they tend to overlap and include each other, because they are formed from common basic principles. They are just applied differently, or more accurately it goes from broader to narrower, but broad definitions also include narrower ones.
Also, there are more possible definitions, which could be derived from same principles, if one would on look at them entirely divorced from how they are actually used anywhere in the fandom. Just by looking at the word AU totally atomized, and then forming principle from it, and applying deductive-logic.
The first principle is canon divergence. Whatever AU is, it’s clearly related to divergence and alterations from canonical events, characterizations, and universe. The differences are mostly about how widely or narrowly this is applied. Sometimes also what exactly counts as canon, or what is believably canon compliant. The second principle seem to be avoiding redundancy, though this is applied a lot more randomly, and its usage seems to based mostly on conventions and popularity of certain tropes.
By redundancy I mean, that certain more commonly used tropes and descriptors often don’t use AU, because they are well-established terms by their own right, and they obviously by their own definitions are AUs. Like mentioned 8 Year, EWE, time travel, Marriage Law, creature fics like werewolves and veelas, and many others. Sometimes all non-canon pairings intrinsically are omitted in similar manner, but sometimes they are not. Like said, this seems to be more up to fandom conventions and mimesis, rather than applying logic rigidly from first principles.
By using these foundations, one could establish quite many similar but slightly different definitions, depending how HP universe / canon is understood. People seem to go with mostly with 2-4, but logically one could use 1 or 5 as well, but it’s impractical for other reasons. First one is broadest, and fifth is narrowest, and first includes all others within it, second everything except the first, and so on.
1. All fanfics are AUs. If HP universe / canon is understood very stridently as single chain of events and singular universe, which is authored only by JKR. Every fanfic forms its own universe, which will be slightly different from JKR’s one, by adding literary anything what wasn’t already in it. Even if a fic doesn’t contradict JKR directly in a knowable way, but it still won’t be the same, because we cannot know if events or characters would’ve taken that exact particular path, or if any description or characterization would exactly match the one true timeline and universe. We can only asses whether something is more believable or likely to happen in canon, but we cannot ever ultimately confirm them, because the final reference point is JKR’s works.
As an example, saying that Harry Potter drinks a cup of tea at Burrow at midday 2.10.2015 might not be exactly contradicted by anything in canon, but the event itself isn’t canonical, and it is contradicted by saying that Harry Potter drinks a cup of tea at Grimmauld Place at midday 2.10.2015. Both are equally true and likely to happen canonically, yet neither is canonical event. They are differing alternate universes, despite being about equally compatible with canon. If canon is understood as single non-contradictory universe with single timeline with exact properties, then all fanfic is AU.
2. All fics which diverge from or directly contradict canon are AUs. In this definition antonym for AU is canon compliant, and every fic can be classified as either AU or canon compliant. This is quite common definition out there. It certainly is workable and there’s nothing wrong in using it. However, like with all definitions it’s not entirely free of problems and ambiguity, especially how it’s applicable and to what it fits exactly. Some say that adding anything to already covered timeline is AU, even if it could believably happen between gaps not covered by canon. So, in order to not be AU, it has to set before or after HP heptalogy*. You could say, that we cannot know anybody else’s inner-voice or mindscape except Harry’s, thus anything written from any other perspective is AU.
Most people can agree that certain events are canon, and that’s fairly uncomplicated (Sirius dies at the end of OftP, Bill and Fleur have their wedding at Burrow, etc), but almost everything else gets quite murky very fast. So, if this definition includes anything beyond those canonical events, like characterizations, descriptions and mechanics of how HP universe functions exactly, then it can be fairly difficult to determinate whether a fic is AU or not. As almost everything except those canonical events are easily contested and ambiguous to being with. Usually there’s multiple equally plausible interpretations for almost anything not covered explicitly or in great detail in canon (sometimes even when they are covered extensively).
Personally, I am not too found of this definition. Not because aforementioned difficulties, but because it’s too broad and encompasses too much. All non-canon pairings are AU as an example is just too large portion of fanfics, because we only use AU in context of fanfics, thus it’s better that the terminology reflects and helps us to distinguish and categorize fanfics. Multitude of fanfiction has grown so much beyond canon, and spiraled so far and wide, that terminology which is so pivotally anchored to canon is more detrimental than helpful.
3. All fics which diverge or contradict canon in some major or significant way are AUs. This is something I see used a lot, and I believe this definition of AUs was what the person in Dramioneasks was referring to. Typically this means absence of some major characters, such as Voldemort or Dumbledore, or that major canonical events are changed, such as Wizarding Wars are have starkly different outcomes, or that golden trio never became friends, or main characters are sorted into different houses. Also, widely different characterizations (Evil Harry or Hermione, or good Voldemort) are counted as well.
I found this to be quite solid definition, and this is my personal threshold of what I consider to be AU. Ofc, its not unproblematic either, because what exactly counts as major or significant is very open-ended. There probably is very strong inter-subjective consensus on certain matters, like everybody probably agrees that Harry, Voldemort and Hermione are major characters without any doubt. Also, they’ll probably agree that Oliver Wood is a minor character, but what about Draco, Neville or Luna? How about if or when Harry joins the Gryffindor quidditch team. Does alterations in stuff like that count as AU? Can many minor changes create a cumulative effect, in which the fic in question is so different from canon universe, that despite no major changes, it should still count as AU, because so many little things are different.
Quite a lot of characters, details and events fall into that gray zone, so often it can be quite difficult to determinate AU by this definition, because so many things fall into that gray area of what is exactly significant change and what isn’t, and from what perspective. The only way to really determinate something like significance is an inter-subjective consensus by the fandom, and that might be either uncharted or too arbitrary for some people.
4. Only fics which change canon or the established universe in some foundational or fundamental way(s) are AUs. These are fics, which are not set in a same timeline at all (at the end of the 21th century UK), such as medieval, regency, prohibition, and they might only have slight parallels to canonical events. Also if some common defining elements such as presence magic or muggles are entirely absent, or changed beyond recognition (everyone’s magical, or nobody is, or muggles are aware of wizarding world, and actively hostile towards it). No Hogwarts at all, or the entire wizarding world is modeled differently, etc.
I see this used quite a lot as well, and these tend to be automatically labeled as AUs by almost everybody. It’s quite narrow and specific, thus it’s not very problematic, except it borders of being too narrow or rare to be really useful. Personally, this is mainly what I am seeking for, when I look for AUs, but I can see that it doesn’t cover enough ground for many. This is what I am primary thinking, when I see tag AU, but I can see why including previous definition is necessary. Problems are quite similar as in previous, the similar ambiguity of what is foundational or fundamental, like in beofre. But I believe there’s way more common ground and shared understanding with this one. It’s very rare to see a fic, which would qualify as something like this, but what isn’t described or labeled as AU.
5. Only fics which change some determined core component(s) are AUs. This is merely taking similar logic one step further, and saying that some specific element(s) is absolutely crucial and at the core of HP (like the presence of magic), and as long as a fic fulfills that condition, it isn’t AU. Nobody actually uses this definition, but I added it as more as demonstration of logic and principle, and how it can be applied further, exactly like the first definition (logically totally sound and sensible, but empirically mindless and useless).
Ofc, one could use this logic even further to either direction. Sort of logic ad absurdum, to a point in which, either every Harry Potter text out there (even those published by JKR) are actually AUs. or nothing is. Already not everybody considers everything JKR has said or published as canon, and by restricting what counts as canon one could get to a point that nothing actually written is really canon (something like real canon is what JKR intended HP to be, but failed to accomplish by her writing). Or that only one particular fic counts as AU, or that no fanfics are AUs, because by labeling them HP fics in some manner is meaningful enough to consider them just as a re-interpretation of multifaceted canon.
The first and fifth definitions are closing into the absurd territory, and I’ve not seen anybody using them. Words are more than stiff logical proposition, and there’s other considerations, which sometimes overrides internal logical consistency (reasons relating to things like aesthetic, social, and utilitarian concerns). Like the first definition would be totally unproductive and redundant. AU is always used in the context of fanfiction, in order to distinguish different fics from each other, thus a term which contains all fanfiction is tautological and useless for that purpose. Also, too narrow or specific terms are not useful either, because they pile on unnecessary accurate and too specific information, which ends up distracting people by cluttering them with overabundance of details and needless complexity (human mind is nothing if not finite after all).
*What are canonical texts of HP is can of worms I am not touching. Most agreed consensus is probably that at least HP heptalogy is canon, so for purposes of this that’s what I am sticking by. There’s some differing opinions about CC, Fantastic Beasts, her online commentary, Pottermore stuff, interviews, and QAs. I’ve only met one person who didn’t consider the whole HP heptalogy as canonical (because he was convinced that books 5-7 were written by a ghost writer, and they didn’t count). Everything else seem to be quite disputed.

Children of a Lesser Matrix: It’s Like A Saturday Morning Cartoon, But With… Genocide
Children of a Lesser Matrix is by no means a complete work- more of an outline that never got past the “slap some ideas in as they come to you” stage. Fun fact: you don’t have to write in sequential order if you don’t want to. It can actually help with writer’s block to jump around.
Let’s take a look at the writing process, shall we?
Tumblr media
I wasn’t kidding when I said the self-insert got the shaft in Eugenesis.
It turns out that back when the Transmasters UK club was a thing, it was pretty common for the members to have a sort of mascot for themselves, a character that would show up in their work repeatedly. You see it nowadays with fanfic writers too, so it isn’t exactly an odd phenomenon, but it’s something I found interesting.
You know who else shows up repeatedly in Roberts’ other works?
Throwback.
But that’s a topic for another day.
This story takes place in the year of 1990. No peering into the future here; this was probably set in the modern day at the time of writing. Seeing as Eugenesis was first published in 2001, it’s safe to assume that we’re looking at the work of a very young Roberts.
Our focus at present is an asteroid in uncharted space.
Tumblr media
Oh!
Tumblr media
Oh.
Looks like these guys are Autobots, and their ship crashed into this space rock, killing them instantly. These must be the equivalent of Transformers’ red-shirts, because it usually takes a little more to take them out. There’s also a Decepticon, but we’ll get to him in a second.
What else is on this asteroid? Oh, y’know, nothing special. Just the Creation Matrix.
AND IT’S EVIL.
Tumblr media
And everyone knows that green is the color of EVIL.
We’ve got an interesting take on the Matrix here, in that A) it’s evil, and B) it’s sentient. Like, really sentient. Also, it can summon demons, and is gonna stuff them in these Autobot corpses it found in the ship.
No mention of what it does with Thunderwing, if anything at all.
Yep. Thunderwing. If you read the IDW Stormbringer miniseries, or the MTMTE Revolutions one-shot, you know about Thunderwing at least a little. In the Marvel UK comics, his whole shtick was that he was obsessed with obtaining the Creation Matrix, believing himself to have an affinity with it. Guess that sort of backfired on him here.
Tumblr media
This is the first time I’ve seen something bolded like this in Roberts’ work, and I really couldn’t tell you exactly why, but it’s oddly endearing. Maybe it the mental image of this 14-year old kid just furiously getting this outline down, underlining the word “will" so hard the lead in his pencil breaks off.
We get hit with an interlude, taking place inside a robot grandpa.
Tumblr media
Of course, I’m being facetious, but this is a little interesting. Perhaps this is referring to his base on Cybertron, and not Alpha Trion himself. It seems more likely than Roberts mistaking the name for a place.
And who’s inside Delta Triton? Why, it’s Skimmer!
You probably don’t know Skimmer.
Skimmer was actually in MTMTE #41- or at least, he was mentioned. Hailing from Caminus and serving under Thunderclash, the comic doesn’t even know what gender he is. He’s male. Probably can’t put that on the wiki, seeing as this is about as far from “canon” as it gets- an unpublished, basically unwritten fanfiction. It’ll be our little secret, just between you, me, and James Roberts.
Skimmer runs into his boss Quillion- who does not show up anywhere else, as far I can can tell- who doesn’t look terribly happy at the moment. There’s a huge blip on the radar, and it isn’t anyone they want to have over for tea.
Tumblr media
Language!
Quillion orders for these massive rocket boosters they’ve strapped to the moon be turned on so they can get the hell out of the way of this honestly preposterously large pile of Decepticons coming their way. They flip the switch, and moon #3 blasts off.
Oh hi, Luna 01, didn’t recognize you there!
Back at the asteroid, the Matrix went and brought the Autobots back from the dead, and proceeds to wax poetic  on the nature of life, and how its new underlings will serve it.
Tumblr media
That’s the royal we, baby. The Matrix is making no bones about it, this thing is KING. Seems like the Omniforce is a Roberts-original idea. Wonder what that’s all about. And what of this new force of evil?
Tumblr media
Oh my fucking god his name is Genocide.
If I were a middle-school kid reading this outline, I’d be losing my mind over how cool and edgy this was. Roberts is trying so hard here, and I’m all about it. You go, tiny JRo. You go full cowl on these evil robots.
Our Omniforce have personalities to match their new looks and identities, and it’s about what you’d expect- these boys are a drop of blood in the water away from going completely feral. Also, Thunderwing’s starting to wake up. So, that’ll be a thing soon.
Back at the interlude, everything’s settling down as the gravity rights itself. The moon almost hit light-speed- which, holy shit- but it looks like the laws of inertia in a vacuum are on vacation today.
Not that I expect a kid from the 90’s to know about that.
They’re roughly 7000 hours away from Cybertron, so they better start heading back now. Assuming that there’s still a Cybertron to go back to.
Back with the first plot, Thunderwing’s having a seizure- Roberts’ prose characters seem to do that a lot- and the Matrix is freaking out, because if he dies, they won’t have a ride off this barren space rock. There’s only one thing to do!
Tumblr media
The Matrix zaps Thunderwing with green (evil!) lightning, saving him from the brink of death. Thunderwing is less than enthused with this turn of events.
Tumblr media
You get redundancies like this when outlining, it happens.
Thunderwing is pissed, and the brand-spanking new Omniforce isn’t super sure how to handle the current situation. The Matrix, thinking quickly, merges with Thunderwing.
This does not help the situation.
Tumblr media
You’ve had them for five minutes, and you’re already killing them. I know you’re new to this, Matrix, but come on now.
TWENTY THOUSAND YEARS LATER, it turns out that Quillion’s estimate of their arrival back at Cybertron was off by just a smidge. The moon runs into a tomb of all things in the depths of space, and brings it on inside to see what all the hubbub’s about.
It’s got a Mind-Krell in it.
No, I have no idea what a Mind-Krell is. Another Roberts original. He’s always been rather ambitious as a writer, it would seem.
Jumping back in time, Thunderwing’s throwing out his rawest lines, and it’s amazing.
Tumblr media
Like holy shit, I unironically love this. I wish he’d decided to do more with this, it’s fantastic.
We get our first taste of action. Theres a lot going on here: Genocide is apparently a necromancer, capable of controlling the dead, which Thunderwing currently technically is. However, this takes time to set up, so it’s Black Fusion’s turn to step up to the plate. He shoots off a volley of Black Fusion from his eyes, knocking Thunderwing over.
Yes, they’re named after their powers. Or are their powers named after them? Anyway, they’re about to head for the shuttle, when Genocide orders Kaos to use his- you guessed it- Kaos Energy.
Tumblr media
We’re also dealing with the “can’t just use said” phase that every young writer goes through. Kaos’ staff, which he’s had this whole time, turns into a gun? It’s not clear, but he shoots Thunderwing and then dives into the shuttle at the last possible second, Indiana Jones-style.
As the shuttle takes off, Genocide warns their resident possessor Daemon to not do the thing, even though he really, really wants to. With that, they train the onboard weapons systems on Thunderwing below- all of them.
And that’s all we got for Children of a Lesser Matrix.
Clearly there would have been more if he’d continued with the ideas, but as is we have a fascinating snapshot of what was probably one of Roberts’ first forays into writing. You don’t get to do this with very many authors, where you can go this far back and see what they were doing, what changed, what stayed the same. I wasn’t expecting to see ideas from MTMTE pop up here- and certainly not ones that were as big as the moon thrusters.
If this entry seems a little soft around the edges, it’s probably because it is. I’m of two mind about covering this at all. On one hand: it was published online for others to read, which makes it free game, and it’s a part of his growth as a writer, so of course I’m going to look at it! On the other hand: Literal. Child. I wouldn’t make fun of a kid just starting out now, and I’m definitely not trying to rag on a young writer retroactively. That being said...
I’m not gonna lie, this is kind of a rough sit. I mean, other than it being an idea springboard that never went anywhere. There are some neat ideas, but… look, anything that’s truly made from the bottom of one’s heart, out of pure love, is always going to be at least a little cringe-inducing. That’s just how it goes, even with the best writers, and this is an outline written by a kid who grew up on 80’s-era media and was just starting out.
Still, there was a lot of potential here. It’s ambitious, it’s over the top, it’s silly and earnest. I like it. It makes me smile to read it and think about the person creating it and having fun doing it.
It just goes to show that no one starts out amazing at what they do.
Up next, a relic of a bygone era- the ‘zine! It’s The Mystery of the Transformer Decoys, a ‘zine that was printed out and sent via snail mail. We truly are spoiled by the internet.

Home isn’t a place, it’s a feeling (Tom Holland Fanfiction) Chapter #2
Up until Tom started to become a well-known actor I was used to him constantly being around. Sleepovers were just the done thing. I can’t remember a time that I wasn’t proficient in the layout of his house or him in the same in mine. I wasn’t bitter.  Before anyone says anything. I loved Tom and he deserved everything he was getting. It’s just hard when the person that you’re used to being around all the time, isn’t around anymore. It’s like this weird empty feeling in your chest.
But Tom was here now, sitting on the arm of my couch. He looked up at me as I came back into the room holding a glass of water. The green dress I had been wearing was somewhere upstairs lying prone across the floor and my hair was loose and messy. It felt a lot better to be home and myself again instead of heavily made up.
“Did you happen to tell Nikki you were here and have not been kidnapped by a super-fan?” I asked, throwing myself down on the settee next to him and trying my best not to spill my water. He looked up from his phone and waved it at me. “Texting as we speak” He replied.
Tom wasn’t a prolific texter. It took a lot when he was on set to get any kind of a response from him. He always called me, every night at the same time. 7pm Uk time, 2pm American time but getting anything else in between was few and far between. I’d been lucky to see so much of the Onward movie when I did. He was always careful to keep Chris Pratt off the videos / pictures though. I was starting to think he just didn’t want me near him. “You’re so lazy, you could just walk over there” I teased “In fact, if you went to the front door and shouted I bet Dom would hear you” I smirked. He gave me a side-eye as he finished his text and threw his phone behind him on the couch cushion. “Did you miss the part where I told you that my parents are driving me crazy recently?” He deadpanned. Ah. There was my Tom. Dramatic little shit.
Tom had taken his suit jacket off and was relaxing in his shirt and dress pants. His shoes were long gone, probably lying strewn across my floor somewhere. He had never been the organised kind. His hair was tousled where he’d been playing with it. I remember in October when he’d shaved his hair for Cherry, it was growing back now but I’d given him such a hard time for it. I must have called him a ‘thug’ every time I saw him. I had ulterior motives for that though, Tom was gorgeous anyway but I had a soft spot for his long hair, I liked playing with it.
“Come on then. Tell me what’s going on?” I said lifting my legs so they were lounging over his. My sleep shorts road up but I couldn’t care less. I was far too comfortable around Tom  He leaned towards me, taking my glass out of my hand and taking a mouthful “Thief” I muttered playfully.
I wasn’t mad, I never actually drank my own drink when Tom was around. He was always drinking mine and I was always drinking his. It dates back to when we were kids, I used to think Tom’s food and drink tasted better than mine and Tom used to think that mine tasted better than his. So we swapped when our parents weren’t looking. Our parents cottoned on soon enough but I’m pretty sure they just thought it was too cute to stop.
He gave me a boyish grin, I took my glass back. I took a sip myself. “You better not have any diseases, Thomas”
“Oh please, If I had any you’d already have them, when was the last time you used your own water bottle at the gym?” He teased.
“Why would I take my own when yours is right there?” I laughed. “Stop trying to change the subject, why don’t your parents agree with you moving out?”
Tom stiffened, this was clearly a sensitive subject but I have never been very good at staying away when I knew Tom needed me. “My parents don’t think I’m ready to live alone, hence why they want you there too. They seem to think that you’re a good influence. You’ll stop me getting into debt or getting burgled or some shit” He huffed. I sniggered.
What bullshit. If anything, Tom was a good influence on me.
“I maintain, they only want me to move in with you because you’ve introduced them to too many romance films with the same storyline” I snorted. Tom gave me a dirty look. “You should be thrilled they want your stubborn arse as a daughter in law,” He said, pretending to be offended.
“I would be thrilled if I didn’t have to marry your pompous arse to become said daughter in law. You think Sam or Harry are available?” I asked, Tom flicked my nose.
“How dare you?” He said, gently pushing my legs off his lap in mock humour, “You take that back and admit you love me right now”
“Never” I laughed. He grabbed the bottom of my foot that he’d just pushed off and narrowed his eyes at me.
“Admit it” He ordered, “Right now” “No” I laughed again, I liked playful Tom. I liked Tom when he wasn’t stressing about his parent’s opinion “That’s it” He thundered. He began to tickle my foot. I squealed and tried to fight away from his grasp but it was damn near impossible. I was in fits of laughter. Shrieking and twisting and fighting. Tom was laughing too.
“Tell me you love me Jules” Tom gasped through laughter “Tell me you’d marry me”
“You jealous brat” I gasped out. Tom’s laughter seemed to double in volume and I was suddenly very aware of the fact that I was on the verge of wetting myself. I needed him to stop tickling me otherwise I was going to have to live down the fact that I peed on my best friend on my mother’s couch.
“Tom, Tom stop” I begged. “I’m sorry, I love you,” I said. His fingers immediately paused on my feet.
“And?” He prompted. His eyes were dark. My stomach twisted uncomfortably. This jealous streak of his was becoming a problem and I was ashamed to say that I think I liked it.
“If you were ever to ask, I’d marry you  in a heartbeat, You wretched jealous fool.” I spluttered. Tom dropped my foot and threw himself down on the couch next to me.
“That’s what I thought, I love it when I come back home” He laughed.
“So.. its Valentines Day. How did that go?” Tom asked. It was 2am and Tom was lying in bed next to me. I was almost asleep but the mention of Valentines Day woke me up quickly. I sighed. “It didn’t work out” I muttered. For the last couple of months, I’d been using POF to try and get out there and meet some new people. I had been invited out on a date for Valentines Day but I was ashamed to admit that I’d been stood up at the Restaraunt. I wasn’t sure if I should admit to that though, Tom had been very against me going on the date. He made me ring him when I got home that night to make sure I was alive. He just didn’t trust internet dating. I couldn’t blame him though, I’d gotten some questionable messages.
“What do you mean it didn’t work out? Did he say something to you?” Tom said. I could hear the stiffness his words. He was getting protective. He didn’t need to but I appreciated it.
“He didn’t say anything because he wasn’t there” I whispered. Tom’s ears picked up and he shuffled closer to me. His arms wrapped around me slowly until I was pressed against his chest. “One day, you’ll meet someone that makes you feel happier than you’ve ever felt before. You won’t be able to imagine your life without them” He said soothingly.
Tom was that guy for me. I was sure of it. I just didn’t have the confidence to voice my feelings. So, I did what I always did when I didn’t know how to voice my feelings. I wrote a song. I’d written many songs about Tom. But, probably my most emotional and most secret song was the one I wrote when he left to film Spider-Man Homecoming. I hadn’t dealt with Tom leaving very well. At all.
However, writing the song had made me feel a lot better. The song was never supposed to be heard. But I suppose if it hadn’t I wouldn’t be telling you this story.

Always suspecting she was a changling, AKDogdriver sought to escape her Dickensian childhood by traveling through the Looking Glass to the crystal cities of Mars, the forests of Middle Earth, and the smoke-filled rooms of 221B Baker Street. Her first literary work was a science-fiction trilogy that sadly will never see the light of day. A bit of a newcomer to fanfiction, she wrote her first piece a year ago and hasn’t stopped since. Mentally married to Thorin Oakenshield since 2009, she lives in Alaska with her 90lb Husky mix, in the fervent hope that one day her King will appear and whisk her away to his magnificent stone halls.
Master List for @theepolynesian
I’m a FanFiction writer that has been writing since 2016. In the years 2018-2019, my writing has started to slow down drastically due to college and other personal reasons but I do try to whip something up once in a great while. I mostly write The Hobbit stories but I will occasionally branch out into other fandoms like Harry Potter or Game of Thrones and I’m very excited to start this journey once again.

Follow Rienna's adventure across the worlds and dreams week after week, and see if love will take it's place in between her Dain Ironfoot. There will be more to see than what you know, and more dangers than just orcs, and wargs and Sauron.

I don’t like bothering anyone with tagging so if you like this and want to try it out then just say I tagged you, I don’t mind.
