Hi all and welcome to my new blog, Musically Rooted.
I've created this as a space for those interested in learning more about roots music, and in particular my playing niches - country blues harmonica, beatbox harmonica, dobro, and general slide playing.
I have students all over the world but an ever-packed diary. While I do teach privately, I'm often away touring or busy with production work, and can't keep up with demand. So I'm hoping to share more of what I've learnt over my years of playing through my website, blog, YouTube channel, and soon-to-come courses and books.
Thanks for joining me for this adventure, and happy playing!

💥 THE BRACKET, PART ONE 💥
This is a collection of the first side of the OC bracket, complete with summaries I did my best to compile and links to the original propaganda posts! There's another side to go consisting of 32 more characters, but I'm posting this early because it's been a while.
@da2base-com's Randal Ebony Clarke (x)
Randal Ebony Clarke (she/he/it), also known as Randy, is a teenage girl who enjoys spending her time drawing, collecting dolls and puppets, playing video games, and making music, along with studying and taking care of bugs! She's a quiet, cold, and cantankerous girl, but once once one gets to know her, they'll learn just how nice she can truly be! It's a shame she doesn't come out of her room very often.
@stargloom's Guppy (x)
Guppy (she/her) is an eel girl! She makes clothes and sells them online for a living, and lives in a shared apartment far far away from home. She gets homesick often, but she’s in the big city making a name for herself! (Why not help her out with your vote?)
@ellie-shaw-official's Julia Lowell (x)
Julia Lowell (she/they) is a popular internet content creator from an SCP AU who also happens to be a wolf god!
@splatterbrush's Dr. Brigan Harlow (x)
Dr. Brigan Harlow (she/her) is your local alien scientist— an apprentice at a shady laboratory! After a series of unfortunate events, she ends up accidentally reviving an ancient AI that plans to conquer the universe, and so she must set out with her friends to stop it... even if she really would rather just stay home and take a nap. Who doesn't love sentient alien fungi?
@fictofaggot's Faunre (x)
Faunre (he/him) is a DID system that consists of mostly transfem and nonhuman alters! His hobbies include being pretentious about music, picking random objects off the ground, and drawing silly My Chemical Romance fanart. He is quiet and generally unpleasant to be around, but his cringefail behavior and autistic awkwardness are off the charts, and that's all that matters.
@nickyisbitchy's Zoey (x)
Zoey (she/her) is a lesbian witch who owns a record store! She enjoys playing harmonica and drums, making jewelry, and home movies. She's a very quiet but passionate person, and when she believes what she's saying is true she isn't scared to get loud. She makes friends easily, but is very secretive. She takes care of her cousin's kid Melody, and she has two cats— a calico named Spot and a hairless cat named Dot!
@ndrogyny's Mortis Sofia Fiorentino (x)
Mortis Sofia Fiorentino (they/them) is an OC for the 4v1 survival horror game Identity V, and their story is set in the early 20th century. Having moved from Italy to New York City at a young age, Mortis realized they didn't feel at home in their growing body. A few years after coming out (to which their parents were luckily accepting), their father fell ill, and it was up to 16-year-old Mortis to get a job to help support their mom. They landed a job as an exterminator, becoming very efficient, and were eventually sent on a job up north that no one else wanted to take. Unfortunately, a freak earthquake occurred, and Mortis was trapped, left behind, and died. Their soul was so full of rage and betrayal that their ghost possessed their now dead body, and went on a search for closure.
@zayn-darkshadow's Filip Quarzen (x)
Filip Quarzen (she/her) is a silly gal who loves puzzles, musicals, and puppets! On a cursory glance, she may seem shy and unconfident in herself and her abilities— and while the latter is true, she can be very outgoing and bold! Mostly motivated by a love of theater, she can be extremely melodramatic, and she has a tendency to be sarcastic and a bit rude due to her lack of patience. She's also trans both in-universe and out— originally created as a little gay boy, now a little gay boy who's a girl!
@sikeyaout's Extrava Anza (x)
Extrava Anza (they/it) is the mayor of a town filled with supernatural individuals! They are also the sibling of a mad scientist and a professional party planner! Who doesn't love a squirrel girl?
@mikey-wazowski's Ria (x)
Ria (she/they) is a spooky creepy girl! She goes through a time loop, which eventually got to the point where she didn't care about anything anymore due to nothing having consequence. She ends up in a juvie for setting her house on fire, and in doing so, they find the person perpetuating the loops they go through.
@abrahamstalker's Janice (x)
Janice (she/her) is very shy and very buff! She's trying to balance trying to get a doctorate in psychology, meeting up with her parents regularly, and 2 part-time jobs. She's a fan of cutesy, Lolita-esque fashion, is learning how to crochet, and has two pet ferrets, Scrap and Pip! She recently moved in with her girlfriend and her girlfriend's family, who are still working up the courage to explain that the "family friend" who lives upstairs is actually a ghost...
@blxckmxmbo's Itsuki Kane (x)
Itsuki Kane (she/they/ix) is a streetfighter who ran away from an awful life at a young age in search of their father. She eventually found her dad, but it didn't end up going well in the end. During that time, however, ix really found herself as a person after having time to not worry about where she was going to sleep that night, and they transitioned! Ix's very blunt and mean, but is a softie at heart and likes to tease her friends.
@wyrm-in-a-closet's Sparkle (x)
Sparkle (she/her) is a shifter— a magical individual who can transform between a human form, an animal form, and a "half" form (part human, part animal). Her particular animal is a sparklemuffin spider! She's silly and stupid, and is horrible at social interaction— she would rather look at cool bugs in the forest, or cool rocks in the forest, or cool plants in the forest (she spends all her time in the forest). She's a wrestler and plays electric guitar!
@wickedsick's Barney Stanz III (x)
Barney Stanz III (she/her) is a clown who lives in her grandpa's attic. She fights aliens, makes band t-shirts for bands that do not exist, is deeply weird and generally not having a good time.
@maddestmewmew's Fertilizer La'Ctaid (x)
Fertilizer La'Ctaid (she/he), also known as Farty, is white and British but it's okay because she's a catgirl. Her parents were murdered in front of her as a child, but it wasn't that bad because their parenting sucked and she got millions in inheritance. She then spent all her money on a bookstore that gets no business and was so embarrassed that she changed her name and later figured out she was trans.
@cogheart's Chloe Liu (x)
Chloe Liu (she/her) is a Sim from a silly save called Franky World! She has saved Strangerville at least once and has scientist swag, a cute little kitty named Salmon, and three adopted children she cares for with Franky, Grim Reaper and her wife that are named Smelly, Stinky and Scared.
@wingedcatgirl's Vivi Elakha (x)
Vivi Elakha (she/her) is a wandering adventurer! She enjoys helping people and seeing the world, and the first thing she did as an adventurer was study of botany and alchemy in order to manufacture her own HRT. She also learned conjury so she could heal people, roguery so she could stab people, and maraudery so she could draw aggro from people.
@tboy-division's Victoria Otieno (x)
Victoria Otieno (she/her/any) is the pilot and engineer of the space pirate crew of the Insurgence! She gets the crew from place to place and keeps the ship in great condition, often with help from her partner Copperheart Jack. Otherwise, she’s usually found in the ship’s library or talking fashion with Tim, the ship’s first mate.
@foxxsong's Eli (x)
Eli (she/they) is a vampire! She was born albino and grew up with a single, emotionally distant yet controlling and possessive caregiver. After leaving home, she meets a vampire sometime in her mid-twenties— he supports her financially, a secret bid to increase her dependence on him beyond just emotionally, and eventually turns her as well. She's cautious and slow to trust but fiercely loyal to those who show her kindness, and has a soft spot for kids and teenagers. Despite her caution, she tends to fall in with bad people or into bad relationships because of the familiarity they bring.
@kalopseance's Embry Ward (x)
Embry Ward (she/her) is a famous detective in the kingdom of Valenstein, and is a respected yet distrusted figure. She exclusively investigates cases that pique her personal interest, and enjoys the thrill of investigation as a game and a way to test her intelligence. She's stubborn, stuck-up, arrogant and prideful, but has her own morals and a dislike of authority and the corruption she sees. She refuses to cooperate with any sort of organization and makes a living through investigative journalism and report writing. She was born to a rich family, but ran away in her teens— she hasn't had contact with any of her siblings in years, until she began investigating the Valenstein Killer case...
@simoni-999's Alegray (x)
Alegray (she/her) lives in an old, ruined science lab in which a woods has grown. She runs a small shop where she sells soap and candles (which cost nothing due to the fact that they live in a literal overgrown post-society), and is the only creature living in the Lab that has access to the internet. She has the power to harness light and make "stars", and her best friend is a skeleton goat!
@cat-of-starlight's Yuui Kyeglin (x)
Yuui Kyeglin (she/her) is a girl who recently entered a magic high school! She tries her best to be cheerful and bubbly to offset how she used to be before transitioning— she's still quite anxious and awkward, but most wouldn't realize due to the front she puts up.
@peri-universals-universe's Ferris Everett (x)
Ferris Everett (she/her) is the Elemental of iron! She lives with the other Elementals, who are immortal, godlike aliens with the power to control one of the elements on the periodic table each. She has powers over iron, including steel, cast iron, iron ore, human blood, and even cereal; if it has Fe atoms, it's hers to control. She's one of the most versatile Elementals; she is flexible and emotionally open on her own, yet around others she puts on a stoic mask. The stars worship and fear her, for she has the power to end them, yet they revere her for building the galaxy's infrastructure and setting up all the transition healthcare.
@vernalloy's Elaois (x)
Elaois (she/it/x) is a reality warper who rules over Mercury, the 5th heaven, one of the days of the week, and forethought. She decides she wants to be a girl after observing humans, who are about to be wiped out from a mass flood, and she enters the material world on Mars, quickly growing attached to a rover named Transcendence. X bonds to it so much that it eventually ends up granting it sentience on accident, being then forced to wrestle with the idea that she used her reality-warping powers selfishly. Living in a false reality messes with it, and x eventually learns that she's the arbiter of her own destiny and it's okay to want things.
@luckiestplant's Gabby Trinh (x)
Gabby Trinh (she/her) is gaslight gatekeep girlboss but with a strawberry banana flavor. She starts off like a typical Pokémon rival, but over the course of the story she gradually learns about the Power of Friendship with the protagonist. She's very goal-oriented and is always smiling and is often in a sort of silly-mean mood— she's just teasing, but often doesn't recognize when people are actually uncomfortable. She also has a bad habit of twisting people's words to fit what she thinks.
@lungfiz's Catharine Nimh (x)
Catharine Nimh (she/her) is the head of a perfume business and a cutthroat businesswoman. She is also the eldest daughter to the notorious Nimh family that's known for all things small-town drama, but, thankfully, seems to be quite sane compared to her relatives. She's not too skilled with people, but she is good with dogs!
@leonfoolery's Sydney Lennox (x)
Sydney Lennox (she/her) is the frontwoman of the British glampunk band The Blitz Babes! She's very bright and excitable, a glampunk master, and canonically a tumblr user, along with being gay and autistic.
@c0rnd0gge's Ava Lyne (x)
Ava Lyne (she/her) is in a band called Keyword:Trying with two best friends from middle school, in which she plays keyboard and bass! She is hard of hearing and insecure about it, but with the help of her friends, she's living her dream of inspiring hope and joy through song. She's known to be rather shy save for when she’s on stage, where she feels able to relax and move with the music. With her friends, she’s just as silly and chaotic as they are, and only wishes that she had the confidence to be as expressive in public as she is in private.
@wintry--mix's Scarlett (x)
Scarlett (she/her) is an axolotl! Her main goal in life is to have fun, she's calm, and she loves snacks.
@dinner-rol's Diamond Perez (x)
Diamond Perez (she/her) is a famous magician! She has a wife and daughter, and apparently if you don't vote for her you'll be haunted by her brother-in-law's ghost best friends.
@protagchihiro's Utau Yawara (x)
Utau Yawara (she/her) is a Danganronpa fancast OC, and her talent is covering songs. She survives her killing game, but at the cost of everyone she was close with— her two main losses were her friend that she was trying to cheer up, and her friend that she clicked very well with and had fun with who turned out to be the mastermind behind it all. She has a major case of imposter syndrome due to the fact that nobody likes her music, they only like her when she's piggybacking off of others' success.
@idikei's Rena Pacheco (x)
Rena Pacheco (she/he/it) is an angel from what can only be described as an off-brand heaven called "The Realms of the Above". He's a cyber-criminal who steals from the rich with the support of G•dz (not censored, just what they're called). It's extremely gay for a member of the criminal task force trying to hunt it down, and also has a monocle!

Welcome to @corporealconcept! ♪♬
My name is Margaret until I decide otherwise and I’ll play any instrument my hands can hold and sing any melody my voice can carry. Folk music of all kinds has been an integral part of who I am for as long as I can remember, from the bagpipes to the balalaika to the banjo. I wanted an online space to archive and discuss my favorite traditional/folk pieces and possibly document any progress I make as a musician :) Primarily, I play the piano and tin whistle, but I’m rather handy with the guitar and ukulele and I’m learning the harmonica and ocarina too!
If this sort of thing is right up your alley, I’d be happy to see you around, and check out my main blog @doonthestair (a folk song reference itself, actually!) for other interests and antics <3

anyway here's a quick run down of some things you might have seen actor bal in! aside from some bit parts in a number of long-running tv shows and movies & etc, these are some of his bigger projects.
The River Dragon (2006, film) - He's thirteen/fourteen in this movie and I do in fact need you to bully him about him being a baby. Balfour plays Halfdan, a young boy from the Danelaw who befriends a dragon in the River Ouse. There was a period of time where they played this yearly in that weird between-Christmas-and-end-of-year period, and it's based on a beloved children's book.
Other Lives (2007-9, tv) - A recurring role in this drama, Balfour played Jamie Wilson, the troubled son of one of the main characters. His character got killed off after three years of variously stupid plots because he was the designated Cautionary Tale Character and, honestly, he was glad to see the back of this one. It was not good. But he did get to go to Newcastle to film it, and he enjoyed that.
The Veil of Time (2012, film) - Balfour played the supporting role of Gregory, a young man from 18th century Derbyshire who was killed in mysterious circumstances. His story becomes the obsession of the main character of the film, Eva, while she's visiting the stately home in which he was killed. He got some recognition for this one on the back of a very solid performance.
The Prizefighter (2013, tv) - This is about the time when he was like "oh, I'm a period drama guy, I do period dramas". Set in the 1920s, he plays Adam Flynn, the brother of main character Amelia, who is in love with the titular prizefighter. He's a horrible, awful dude in this one and the feedback he receives the most is "wow, I was so glad when you died!" It wasn't great but it did get multiple seasons after he was written out, so whatever.
The Dead Water (2015, tv) - Balfour plays Ned Braithwaite in this tense murder mystery about a late-nineteenth century merchant ship crew. Notable for: how cosy he looks in the costumes, his curls, one particularly intense interrogation scene and the fact that the final scene of the first season leaves his character's fate entirely ambiguous. Is he dead? Does he get back home? Who knows, this show got cancelled after one season because nobody watched it and now you're going to stumble across it years later and be desperate to know what was meant to happen in season two.
Run Wild (2019, film) - His comeback project! Balfour plays Scott Miller, a Mancunian country musician in a band trying to hold itself together while the relationship at its centre falls apart. He was required to sing and play music for this film, which led to him learning how to play both the harmonica and banjo. It's his finest film yet, and he was praised for a strong start to his return to what had previously been a very, very mixed career. There was also a lot of speculation around the bts of this film as to whether he had a fling with Alfie Hoult, who was one of the duo of musicians who worked on the music, on social media. I personally would not blame you for falling in love with him a little bit in this movie.
The Highwayman (2020, film) - Uh oh, they've realised he can sing! In this R.obin H.ood retelling, set in the 18th century, Balfour plays A.lan-a-Dale and, boy, they sure do make him sing. He's playing someone from Lancashire and his accent has been perfected, thank you. This film isn't his best but was pretty decent. It's not the worst adaptation out there. The bar is low, but a solid character-first plot can get you a long way.
The G.reat B.ritish B.ake Off (2020, tv) - A charity episode that will go down in history. Balfour burned everything he tried to make except for some brownies, broke his oven, burned his hand and spent half of his time getting bleeped for swearing. There is more than one supercut of his disaster episode online. He spent most of it with his head in his hands going "why did I do this, why did any of you let me do this" but, don't worry, it was for the bit.
Wild Hunt (2021, film) - Balfour plays William, a 15th century farmer from Yorkshire who is haunted by spectral hounds. Full-on folk horror, came out in October and got a whole lot of attention, least of all for the fact that he's in every single shot and is pretty much carrying the whole thing himself. He's spoken a lot about how emotionally exhausting it was to film, but he's very proud of it. It's definitely not a film for the squeamish.
Peaked (2022, tv) - A limited series romcom. Balfour plays Joe, a handsome baker who falls for a thief, Marcus, who just pulled off the heist of the century and has decided to lay low in the Peak District until it all blows over. It's modern, for once, and a role where he actually just gets to be goofy and cute. You probably heard about it on social media because it's gay and he takes his shirt off a lot.
Herald (2023-, tv) - A drama/thriller about an investigative journalist, Alyssa Roydon, who uncovers a political scandal. Balfour plays Lucas Niven, a rival journalist with whom Roydon develops a toxic romantic relationship. Season one was highly regarded and one of the most watched programmes on television that year. Season two is set to begin in mid-2024 and is more organised crime-oriented.
Hare Spell (2024, film) - A folk horror/thriller about an accusation of witchcraft that tears an isolated village apart in 17th century Scotland. Balfour plays Thomas Kerr, the husband of Janet, the accused woman. It releases in early 2024 and reviews very well. He is very much back to breaking hearts and performing at his best in this one.

Grr why am I worried about him???
All my online friends are saying I need to reaffirm my boundaries and not let myself fall into bad habits. But damn there's this annoying dysphoria when I think about this whole process and I wish I could have the energy to turn it around and be mad.
But I'm not angry. I'm concerned because he's my friend and I want him to be ok.
I don't understand why I need to be angry and turn off that worry I have for someone who I will always consider my best friend.
My brain can't compute these emotions.
It's easier if I compartmentalize and make a list as follows:
1- I appreciate any friends I have who have taken me to hospital or helped me in a time of need deserve equal in return.
2- I understand that my friends all have mental health issues and such things I cannot do anything other than listen and give moral support for them to seek help.
3- I see now that it is not my responsibility to keep bugging my friends to seek help for themselves. They need to do that for themselves when they are ready.
I'm not sure what else to say.
I'll leave with the promise that I am working on myself. I'm learning to be me.
I'm learning to accept myself.
I am an amazing person.
I can sorta play the guitar, some harmonica from primary school, and I'm learning the violin. (I also want to learn to play bass guitar and eventually the harp).
I can speak German, some Dutch, and French, Gaelic from living in Scotland, a tiny bit of Welsh from when I lived in Wales, and I picked up a little bit of Japanese from anime. Also, I have basic knowledge of asl and bsl from classes, I was working on how to write in kanji/hiragana and in Arabic in the past.
I've studied many things over the past ten years. I'm a highly accomplished student despite my shortcomings and absences.
I really enjoy photography and painting.
I can design video games, phone apps, and flash animations. I can make jewelry from precious metals. I can make clothing from scratch, and I understand how the fashion industry operates, how much of what we wear in our every day life has been informed by history and culture.
I can also wire a plug, fix a leaky sink, and install internet in businesses and homes.
I am also experienced and trained in both the care of children and vulnerable adults.
I have first aid training and I am an eagerly experienced archery instructor. I love it!
And I've studied cyber security of course!
Also I know how Trump expects his drink served from my training in bartending and hospitality - our field trips were amazing - I wanted to be a bartender from that course but I prefer cooking.
I've also worked in kitchens in 3/4 parts of the UK. I just need to go to N. Ireland now.
I've had jobs like retail, call centres, but I enjoy cleaning because it's therapeutic!
And most importantly I am a writer! 💯🔥
I have self published the first trilogy of my 12 part book series set in Scotland. I've also self published the first book of my second trilogy. And it all started with a poetry book I also self published! 💪
I wrote mostly by myself at first but over time I have built up my supporters and I have a pretty awesome fanbase! ☺️❣️🥰
My profits are small but I love writing!
I love all my friends and family so much!
I love al my Nakama!

I found this in my drafts, written YEARS ago, that I’d been intending to post alongside that billyalan post that I ALSO had in drafts but never got around to and I’m so glad I wrote this down because I’d forgotten a lot of it and it’s nice to refresh my memory so I’m posting it now
not to get uh,, all gushy but, anyway-- that post I just reblogged to my sideblog? iconic and formative? still doesn’t quite cover it. It’s like looking back at an old familiar signpost that pointed me in a direction I’m glad I went. I remember first listening to the song Blue Driver (at that point it was pretty much less than two months after getting into billyalan, two MONTHS) and that night staying up and hitting replay a good dozen times or more, reveling in ship feels, and then clicking a recommendation on the youtube sidebar from the same artist and same album, the song Roll On Babe. It was slower, but also really good, and they were thereafter linked irrevocably in my mind, one following the next, and not through lyrics but by pure aesthetic association. They were, and still are, essential billyalan for me, highlighting a mood about the ship that has carried on, that I’ve carried with me, for years since. Only a short time after hearing Blue Driver, I had a 2am impulse to learn it on guitar, found the simple chords online, and quietly played it, and once I was eventually better at it? it was the actual first song I could play while singing at the same time, fundamental to making me into a decent guitar player, really just a baby step in the long run because at its heart it’s a pretty simple song, mostly E to A to E to A and to a form of B and so on. And that’s partly why the two songs go so well together, because they consist of the same two base chords, E and A, and Roll On Babe in its basic form is just a repetitive strum that has the beat of a train chugging along, reminding me of empty spaces and trains and the miles they cross, of lonely places like the ones Alan and Billy spend their summers in, how they’d listen to songs like this one and lean into each other....
Anyway, those two were covers by Vetiver and I read up and found their earlier forms, the original of Blue Driver by Michael Hurley (who lent his help to Vetiver in their cover, fun fact!), and the principal cover of Roll On Babe by Ronnie Lane & Slim Chance (banjo! harmonica!), where Vetiver took their cue from. All four tracks? super enjoyable for me in their own different ways.
The point is, I GUESS, is that any damn time I’m bored and I pick up my guitar, on a random day whether I’ve been thinking about billyalan or not, lol, those two songs are some of the easiest things to strum out, maybe hum, maybe sing, and I’m instantly taken somewhere else, somewhere on a sunny highway, somewhere in a truck, imagining Billy and Alan singing along, arms hanging out the window, carefree and very much in love

Cartwright Coming Home for Special Show with Charlie McCoy
Tumblr media
Legend will join another legend. Again. But this time in Wheeling. At the Capitol Theatre. This Thursday evening. That’s when Glen Dale’s own Lionel Cartwright and country music Hall of Famer Charlie McCoy will partner for “An Intimate Evening of Stories and Songs” in downtown Wheeling beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online. It will be the second time Cartwright and McCoy join each other in song since the holiday season. “Charlie and I did a show at the Country Hall of Fame and Kyle (Knox) found out about it and thought it would be a cool thing if we brough it to the Capitol Theatre,” Cartwright explained. “I’ve worked with Charlie quite a bit through the years and I can tell you he has some of the craziest stories I’ve ever heard. They truly are insane. “The show is a two-man show and we’ll cover his stuff, and we’ll cover my stuff,” he said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun and I think the crowd is going to enjoy the music and love the banter between the two of us.” He mostly plays a harmonica, but Charlie McCoy has mastered many more instruments during his career. Cartwright’s musical hits include 3-BMI Million-Air Award songs, including the Billboard #1 “Leap of Faith”, “I Watched It All On My Radio”, “Give Me His Last Chance”, along with other Top 10 hits. He was a member of the famous country music class of 1989 and was nominated for 1990 ACM New Male Vocalist alongside Garth Brooks and Clint Black. Cartwright’s work as a composer has been credited in over one hundred television and film projects – including for streaming services such as Netflix, Apple TV, Discovery, and more. McCoy? As a session musician and primarily a harmonica master, he's played with a few artists most might have heard of before. Folks like George Jones, Roy Orbinson, Johnny Cash, Vince Gill, Johnny Paycheck, Leonard Cohen, Willie Nelson, Tanya Tucker, Waylon Jennings, Josh Turner, Gordon Lightfoot, Bobby Bare, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Tom T. Hall, for example. And the list goes on. “Me and Charlie became friends because he’s liked my stuff and I like his stuff, so that’s how the Hall of Fame show came about,” Cartwright revealed. “And it really was well received because we just naturally talked with each other during the show. Now, I’m sure it’ll be different in Wheeling because we’re not trying to copy the content necessarily. Just the format, really. “The crowd in Wheeling is going to love it because they’ll be able to sing along, and they’ll be able to learn some things about a lot of folks in the country music business.” Cartwright is far more accomplished in the music industry than most Valley residents realize. Those Country Roads While most shows are stage shows, the last time Cartwright performed at the Capitol Theatre, he AND the audience were all on stage. The performance was in May 2018 and Cartwright played his hit songs and many other originals, and he shared with the crowd the tales behind each tune. He expects a similar format this Thursday evening. “I’ve never really thought about how much I like that format – playing and talking about it – but I do like to perform that way because it’s more personal,” Cartwright said. “And the folks will just love hearing about the life that Charlie has lived in this industry. His career has been truly remarkable because he’s worked with so many of the national cats through the years. “He’s been a session guy who's worked with every country artist possible. Seriously. I’d have a hard time finding someone in country he’s not worked with during his career,” he said. “I’m talking about people like Roy Orison and Johnny Cash and everyone since them. Shoot, when Bob Dylan has come here (to Nashville) to record, there’s Charlie McCoy, and his stories could go on for days.” McCoy once was the music director for the TV hit show "Hee Haw," and he's recorded with all of the greats in the music industry. Cartwright reminisces about those just-a-kid Jamboree days when he was a musician for star after star when country music took over downtown Wheeling each Saturday evening. Wheeling’s Jamboree USA was ranked second only to Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry when it came to the most popular country music venues. “I don’t come home often because I don’t have family here anymore, but the best part about returning for me is touching base with where I came from. I drive down to Glen Dale just to see the house where I grew up, and there’s really something about going back to your roots. It always puts things into perspective for me,” Cartwright said. “And I love going back to the Capitol Theatre. It’s a very special place for me. “Every Saturday night, from my senior year in high school and all the way through college, I was playing music at the Capitol Theatre,” he said. “It was absolutely formative for me. It’s what I ended up doing for the rest of my life, and it’s because of those Saturday nights. That stage is magicial, and that room, that theatre, is very special.” And this show with Charlie McCoy will add another chapter. “I do think back on those Jamboree nights, and I remember those warm nights during Jamboree in the Hills, and I realize now just how special those nights were. It’s all just so dear to my heart,” Cartwright said. “It’s never been lost to me, the privilege that it was and is now. “And now I get to perform with Charlie McCoy and I can’t wait.” Read the full article

19, 20, 25! 💓
19. the most interesting topic you’ve researched for a fic That’s a tough one, but probably medieval medicine/science. There's a common depiction in modern media of the Middle Ages as this smelly, backwards society devoid of all scientific advancement and knowledge, which of course isn't true, and it's interesting to read about the actual practices of the day, some of which were pretty crazy from a modern perspective, but plenty of which were actually pretty solid.
20. in what year did you publish your first fic? Honestly, I'm not sure. I'm in my 30s and have been publishing fic online since I was a kid. I want to say the very first one I ever actually published was a fic based on an old point and click adventure game series from the 90s called Quest for Glory, but I'm not sure, and I don't know which year it was. I think I was 12? Maybe a little younger or older. So let's say, 'Probably sometime in the late 90s.'
25. besides writing, what are your other hobbies? Reading, of course. I work out a lot. I draw occasionally, though I haven't done that in a while. I go through phases where I learn a bit of a musical instrument. I took piano as a kid and bought a keyboard about fiveish years ago. I also have a violin and a harmonica, although I haven't picked up either of those in a while. I was taking violin lessons for a while but couldn't afford them anymore at the time, so I should go back to that. I took up knitting for a little while. I also love studying languages. I have a lot of interests and am willing to try most any hobby that seems interesting.
