Rustic climbing structure used at Mottisfont Abbey, England, to train roses on. I am always looking for ways other people display and train their roses. This structure is too rustic for my garden, but I can imagine that it would look great in a country or cottage garden. What is your opinion? #climbingstructure #rose #roses #rustic #rusticclimbingstructure #mottisfont #mottisfontabbey #mottisfontgardens #mottisfontabbeygardens #england #gardendesign #garden #gardens #gardening (at Mottisfont, National Trust)

JUST PICKED ‘CHARLOTTE’ (1993) IN THE KITCHEN
I have taken to just gathering a few David Austin blooms daily for our dinner table as the central deeper flushes fade overnight and the rose appears quite washed out by next morning. It is as if it has lost its soul. These blooms are from a new-planted own-root bush in the long garden so it will take a few years for it to build up to a mature specimen. ‘Charlotte’ reminds me of ‘Crocus Rose’, another excellent rose that lasts very well inside.
According to David Austin ‘Charlotte’ is upright, growing to 90cm in width and 75cm high. He recommends growing his roses in groups of three but I do not have the space for that. The diagram for this rose shows that some new waterspouts were cut low down on the outer sides of the bush to encourage flowering all over. The rose has three stars for fragrance, and said to resemble a Tea Rose scent. It is from Austin’s ‘Heritage’ strain and was bred from a seedling crossed with the gorgeous yellow ‘Graham Thomas’ by Austin, named for my late hero Englishman Graham Stuart Thomas, the National Trust Gardens Advisor, creator of Mottisfont Old Rose Garden from his personal collection of old roses and accomplished botanical artist. He wrote many horticultural books of importance on all kinds of plants. I have ‘GT’, ‘H’ and ‘C’ near each other in the long garden and all are healthy and beautiful roses. I like the fact that they are of the same ‘family’.
