"Those were the days", Mary Hopkin
1968 Written by Boris Fomin and Gene Raskin
One of fifty posts in Let's Do It, my personal favourite singles from 1954-76.
Take the tune from a Russian romance song, and discard the words. Add a fresh lyric written by an architecture lecturer. Have it sung by a gamine nymphet from OpKnox, and get top pop star HRH Sir Paul McCartney in to produce it. Release it through Paul's label, and watch the royalties roll in.
Tumblr media
OK, we're being a bit snarky. "Those were the days" works because it's a bit exotic, the trills and arrangement in the introduction tell us how the song isn't foursquare rock 'n' roll. It works because Mary Hopkin is a tremendous singer, uses her voice to conjure up a spell, a vision of the scene. And it works because the lyric fits, tells a story and meshes perfectly with the tune.
Perhaps the only dissonant note: Mary is young, and she's singing an old woman's song. She later reflected, "Maybe that's what worked with the song, the fact that I was almost a child, singing an older woman's song. That's what people liked about it. But I felt privileged to have been given that song by Paul." She revisited "Those were the days" in 2018, worth a listen.

FRIDAY NIGHT SPECIAL
youtube
The Jonson Sisters (1971)
Opportunity Knocks was a tv talent show that ran from 1949 to 1990. It spawned many successful comedians, musicians and variety acts. (We'll go into the show and the reputation of its original host Hughie Greene in the future).
I don't like talent shows, (well except for The Gong Show or Novelty Island!) To me, the acts are not as much produced, more vacuum-packed. Oh they have talent, but why sell it cheap? Something is lost when a performer is given a song that a committee hopes the punters will like and then a sob story to tug at the nation's collective heartstrings. I'd rather listen to a band in some lowlife boozer, where the only tears shed are your own when it's your round.

Last week I sent out a Hail Mary application for a job as a library specialist in my old college town, and I fully excepted to be ghosted or sent a form email with the word "unfortunately" in it, but today I was told that I had been selected to move onto the next hiring phase. They want me to come to the library for an interview and a written test, and it pays two dollars more per hour than my current job (if I got a full 40 hours, that'd be $650 or $700 extra per month after taxes). This would literally be a dream come true were it not for the fact that they scheduled my test for this coming Wednesday, August 17th.
Problems:
I am 400 miles away.
I have no car.
I have a job to which I am currently employed and expected to show up on Wednesday.
"To ensure fairness for all candidates, requests for alternate or makeup assessment dates will not be granted."
What do I do? Do I pass this up, or do I throw away everything for a chance at a career. Not even a guaranteed career, just a chance, with who knows how many other applicants vying for the same position. I could quit my current job, take a coach bus up there, crash with my sister for a few days, take the test, and they pick someone else. Then what? It's high risk/high reward, but I'm not a betting man and I can't possibly be the most qualified person for the job (I'm an English major who has exclusively worked retail and customer service since high school).
I'm trying to convince myself it's not worth it to continue, but then why did I apply in the first place?
I want it.
I want it, but it's just as much luck as it is skill, and I can't afford to go for it and fail. If I do this, I either move on to the next phase of my life, OR I wind up stuck at my parents' place for a very, VERY long time. The job I have now is perfect for my mental health because it's easy, low stress, low stakes, and my boss doesn't care what I do in my considerable amount of downtime; I am basically paid to browse tumblr for hours and occasionally answer the phone/door. I'm never gonna find another job like this down in the Keys, it's lightning in a bottle, so if I give it up and don't land the library gig, I'll have to go back to bagging groceries or some shit. I can't do that again. I can't stand for 8 or 9 hours a day. I can't return to the "the customer is always right" mindset when my current boss knows the customer is very often wrong and expects me tell them so. I can't do it. I won't. Certainly not for less than I make now (my job pays well over minimum wage; most jobs down here do not)
My boss is pretty lenient, but I don't think she's lenient enough to give me multiple days off, on such short notice, for the express purpose of finding another job. She wouldn't let me come back after that. I can't unburn that bridge.
I don't know what to do...

How many people would have to take a shot if someone said, during a celebration, "Never have I ever tried to assassinate Tsuna."
Do you think the room would go wild when the Tenth's own Right Hand had to toss one back.

If you guys don't say it. I will. Like father like son. I'm looking at you Will. Specifically TOA Apollo.
Minor tsats spoilers and toa too, if you wanna read that.
Firstly, Flirting. You can just tell Will got he's rizz from his father. The difference is, it worked for Will. Reyna rejecting Apollo, chef's kiss.
Believe it or not. Their humor is very similar. Puns for goodness sake. Like Will power? Lol.
No hate on Will, and this is mostly satire, but they both complain a lot. Except only one of them, spoiler alert will, deserves too. (I DON'T MEAN IT THAT WAY, Anti-Will people, so don't even)
They both made jokes about fricking band names, lol. Nico and the cocopuffs. Nico, Rachel, Will, and the troglodytes
Both Bisexual icons
They are both stupid, Like bringing no weapons to tarturus is giving when Lester and his used to be a god self decided that swearing to never use the only weapons he can use properly and his singing gifts on the styx was a grand idea.
I feel like they both say the most socially inappropriate things. Like they just somehow say the wrong thing.
I'm almost certain they both act quieter when nervous/scared/sad.
They both think they are useless even though they did pretty impressive and quite helpful stuff.
Both had their previous view on things (darkness/being more human) changed. And bla bla development.
Yeah so that's pretty much all I could think up at the top of my head.

I actually really love how megaton looks. Like in comparison, diamond city feels really barren and devoid of character to me, but megaton feels sooo much like a real city. Seeing the creative ways people make use of limited space, and how the city feels so organically built. Diamond City feels so lacking in comparison and like. I guess i get why with engine limitations and all, but it just feels like there was so much more that could have been done. Idk. Megaton just feels like a really good example of fun city planning.

they honestly couldve done so much with junpei beheaded/dismembered and im disappointed that it ended up just being mira. so much of his character and his relationship with akane is characterized by his lack of bodily autonomy, and him being openly beheaded during the nonary games would be the ultimate example of this. its perhaps the most brutal death in the game, and it never really gets explained or developed beyond the one puzzle that we get with it. junpei has been shown repeatedly to be subject to akane's plans or follow her blindly and i just think that would have been a really interesting angle to approach his beheading from. junpei has willingly signed up for nonary games in two different timelines just because he knew he would see her. he was infected with a deadly virus trying to find her. he grew desensitized to death as he took underground jobs to try and find her. his safety always comes second when shes in the picture, and his beheading wouldve been a prime opportunity to 1. exploit his willingness to let himself die/be injured for her and 2. make akane confront the fact that her confidence that junpei will always follow after her is not necessarily a positive thing.
#zero escape#additionally wasnt mira supposed to be asleep?? like i know she didnt get the forget juice but didnt she still get knocked out?#but also!! none of her other kills were like that! none of them were dismembered and she didnt touch junpeis chest#so even that reasoning doesnt make sense#kinda feels like a copout to keep the shock of junpei being disrespected in such a way - to have his very body turned into a puzzle#a puzzle that akane is forced to solve!!! without knowing that what shes looking for is his head - him!#theres so much potential there and they just didnt do anything#im not even saying that akane should have somehow been responsible for that death - only that not having her really grapple with it is such#a missed opportunity#i still fucking LOVE the imagery of it though. i really think its the epitome of the representations of his lack of autonomy#he loses all of vlr. quark. 45 years of his life. because akane decides this is best for him. he dies repeatedly trying to find her.#because she believes that she knows what will keep him safe#and turning junpeis body into a puzzle posthumously is a fantastic example of his lack of control over his body#its like hes literally become a doll. hes jumpydoll - not junpei. hes subject to these games even after he has died.#he gets no peace. no respect in his death. not when hes in these games. not when hes in the shadow of akanes whims and games.#i still love the imagery. i think it was one of my favorite parts of ztd and is honestly now a core tenet of my Junpei Understanding#but i was disappointed in the lack of narrative weight that specific death had. for him to be one of the first dead? for it to be in such a#brutal manner? like come ON. the character analysis for junpei and akane and their relationship is RIGHT THERE. all you had to do was put i#in the game#but nope.#they just handwave it as something mira did.#and dont bring up the details ever again because. plot point solved?#anyway. ive been thinking about junpei imagery and bodily autonomy a lot. obviously.#zero escape spoilers#mak no peeking#marydontlookatthis

I have a headcanon that all the Papyri/Papyruses have a bad habit of not knocking before opening doors. When Frisk is in Sans’ room Papyrus barges in without knocking. Sans usually keeps the door locked so Papyrus is used to door unlocked = ok to enter. I think all it would be the same in the other aus too. Older brother used to locking their doors to keep younger brother out unfortunately teaching them not to bother knocking. I think is a fun headcanon to exploit to create silly scenarios. What do you think? Does it hold water?
*kicks in the door* HEHE YES that's a really fun headcanon!!! Lots of opportunities for ✨shenanigans✨!
I also think it'd be interesting if all the Papyri had the same habit but for different reasons.
e.g. Classic!Sans gave up on teaching Pap to knock because Pap kept getting too excited/annoyed and forgets to knock, Swap!Pap just can't be bothered much to his brother's chagrin, UF!Pap starts off similar to classic but it becomes a thing of not-knocking as a way to catch people off guard (no time to hide things if you aren't expecting someone!), Swapfell probably depends on your interpretation/which version, but you get my drift lol.
SAYING THAT THOUGH... we do unfortunately have evidence that Papyrus is a polite boy and knocks in canon (sometimes) 😔. He knocks on Undyne's door, when he brings Frisk/the player to her house so they can become friends!
I think it's a super fun headcanon even so, but if having this one instance bothers you, there's plenty of ways to work around it. Not to mention we only have like... 2 and a half instances of door opening action (half from that pic from the newsletter that has Papyrus slamming into Grillby's when he's looking for Sans) which isn't enough to conclude much of anything from either way lmao.
Again, I still think that your headcanon holds up, but it got me thinking about ways to incorporate Papyrus knocking on Undynes door into things... sticking with your existing reasoning, you could always have a situation where all the Papyri keep that assumption, (unlocked means it's ok to come in and locked means stay out) and Undyne has simply learned to lock her door lolol. That does bring to mind the image of Papyrus just... jiggling the doorknob for doors that are locked though. Let him in!!! (Now I think about it... this is actually just how doors seem to work in games generally. Most doors are unlocked, and you enter as you please... if they're locked you either try again/find a key or knock LMAO)
Or maybe he knocked because he wants to be a good role model for Frisk... (this pairs well with a headcanon that I've seen where Papyrus putting on a show/playing things up a little [like the date] for Frisk since they're a kid)
TLDR: that's a FANTASTIC headcanon, I love it, and also do whatever you want forever!!!

Comic panel redraw because I looove sillygoofy guys dying horribly (but then they get better)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: a redraw of a panel from the ghostbusters comic "The Other Side". A possessed Peter and several ghosts with guns stand over the bullet-riddled bodies of Ray, Egon, and Winston. The redraw is done in a simpler style with slight tweaks to some designs and poses (most notably Egon's hair being fluffier and the dead men's eyes still being open) and is extended to fit Ray's boots in frame. The ghosts are a lot less defined and more wispy in the redraw, Peter has a scarier grin and a yellowish glow around him, and there's a large pool of blood added under the bodies.
There are two versions of the image, one with the original panel in the upper right for reference, and the other with the lyric "they'd find us in a week" written in red at the bottom. End ID]

I'm actually really hyped for Mists of Pandaria timerunning ovo
A shame that it's (AGAIN) a limited time event, but it sounds like fun. Also really nice that they're apparently just... letting us buy the raid/world boss mounts (Elegon and Galeon were mentioned).
I'm gonna roll a Zandalari paladin and I'm all excited about her :3c
