The entertainment is in the pacing. The writing is superb. Great setup, suspense, new information, escalating stakes, mystery, twists and turns, and an ending that ties everything together.
The only gripe I have is there is no happy ending*.
Talk to Me is a 2022 Australian supernatural horror film directed by Danny and Michael Philippou and written by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman, based on a concept by Daley Pearson. It stars Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto, Zoe Terakes, Chris Alosio, Marcus Johnson, and Alexandria Steffensen.

Talk to Me (2023)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
Talk to Me has multiple instances of harsh flickering lights at the end of possession scenes. The opening scene shows a severe strobe light being used at a party at night. Emergency vehicle strobe lights illuminate a scene where someone steps into a car in pouring rain.
Handheld cameras are used frequently, with occasional, very brief shaking. There are sudden rolling motions of the camera that follow unnatural contortions of people's bodies.
Flashing Lights: 9/10. Motion Sickness: 4/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: This film deals with bodily possession, and multiple people under the influence of it commit acts of self-harm and suicide attempts, one of which is successful.

give spooky tuesday a listen on apple podcasts, spotify, iheart radio, or stitcher

Talk to Me (dir. Danny & Michael Philippou) x Fantasia 2023.
A24′s low-budget Australian supernatural horror film offers a highly original yet brutal experience in its adolescent thrills. Grounded by an excellent lead performance from actress Sophie Wilde, how the Philippou brothers visualize their frightening premise of undead possession to express grief and dread only makes the ghostly sequences feel more inventive. There’s a lot to enjoy about the streamlined genre film and the way it economically lays out its cinematic terror.
Screened at the 2023 Fantasia International Film Festival in Montreal.

Talk to Me (2022)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Tumblr media
So spooky. Perfect amount of jumpscares, even though the eye gore was slightly too much for my taste. The lore was amazing and the whole film was well thought out.
It was shocking, disturbing, and tense. I loved it, and I love how certain callbacks were made throughout.
Tremendous ending, and it made me so excited for the sequel.
You should watch this film if:
The premise itself is enough to pique your interest (come on, talking to ghosts through an embalmed hand?)
You love the twisted and recurring themes
You need more A24 horror in your life (spoiler: you do)
Similar titles (I’m not sold on these suggestions yet):
The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror II (specifically the story with the monkey paw)
Insidious (2010) (unrelenting spirits haunting a family)

The Mosley Review: Talk To Me
Tumblr media
I remember as a kid that all the witches and true Goth teens that were all about "the dark and endless void in which our spirit shall rest" lifestyle. Sometimes they would invite other kids to a party and at some parties they would have a seance or a ouija board would be brought out. They would claim to see stuff and then pass it on like a creepy ghost story throughout the halls of the school. Many films like Stigmata and The Craft were some of the inspirations and classic teen films about supernatural horror were everywhere. The level of originality and creative scary visuals got better then started dying off when the Paranormal Activity films started taking over. Now comes this film which takes a simple and universally friendly acknowledge of communication and twists it into something more sinister and creepy. That was the beauty of the concept and it is put to full use and nothing is held back. I loved the visuals of the many spirits and how the possession would violently take place. The sense of desperation, psychological and emotional trauma was on full display and its always fun to see how the characters handle it. I liked that certain characters were around only when needed instead of over crowding the screen even if a few of them were very one note.
Tumblr media
Sophie Wilde as Mia was the lead of the film and she knocks it out of the park. The amount of desperation for wanting to rekindle the flame of young love and her need to fit in wasn't necessarily new, but her portrayal made it relatable. The quick turn of events for her life as we get to the main plot was astounding. Her rough emotional journey into madness was excellent and her performance kept me engaged. Marcus Johnson plays her father Max and I felt he was very one note. He was very good at delivering the emotional weight of the strained and distant relationship between him and his daughter. Alexandra Jensen as her best friend Jade was great and funny at times with her snarky remarks. Their friendship felt natural and the genuine moments of bonding between them was good. Joe Bird was really good as Jade's younger brother Riley. He represented the "younger brother looking up to older sibling" type and it was cute at times. He represented that last shred of innocence in the film. Miranda Otto is always great to see on screen and as Jade and Riley's mother Sue, she was a firecracker. She wasn't afraid to lay down the law in the house and I loved how she embarassed her daughter in a particular scene. Otis Dhanji was good as Jade's boyfriend Daniel. He is stuck in a love triangle between Jade and Mia and I liked the tension between them and I'm glad it didn't overshadow the story. Zoe Terakes was good the dealer of the school, Hayley. Hayley was the purveyor of "The Hand" and I liked her devilish enjoyment of the possession scenes.
Tumblr media
The score by Cornel Wilczek was good and creepy in the more intense scenes. The use of silence is where this film excels. There is power in not using score in the most obvious moments of horror and that was used well here. I loved the design of the "The Hand" and the markings add that extra level of demonic iconography. Where I feel the film lacks is in the middle after the majority of haunts begin. I would've loved for a not so obvious twist in the psychological moment that kicks off the last 30 minutes of the film. I liked the visual foreshadowing earlier in the film and how it paid off. I've been a fan of the YouTube creators behind the wild and awesome channel RackaRacka, Danny and Michael Philippou. For a debut film, this was an fantastic supernatural horror film that plays to their strengths and shows that they have a bright future as storytellers on the big screen. I can't wait to see where they go from here. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in the comments below. Thanks for reading!

Talk to Me (2022, Australia)
Directors: Danny Philippou & Michael Philippou
Writers: Danny Philippou & Bill Hinzman (based on a concept by Daley Pearson)
Mini-review:
This was basically the buzziest horror movie of the year and, fortunately, it mostly lives up to the hype. Pretty much all the scenes with the hand thingy are incredibly gripping and intense, to the point of giving me a bit of anxiety. Also, I just love how original the whole idea feels. Like, I know we've seen tons and tons of possession movies and stuff like that, but Talk to Me manages to give the genre a twist that feels super refreshing. Kudos must be given to the sound design and the score, which immerse the viewer in the film's world from the very first scene. And the script tends to include moments of very dark humor that made me laugh out loud. Last but not least, I need to commend Sophie Wilde's bravura performance. Tbh, the one complaint I have is that the movie sometimes struggles to keep a steady pace. So, yeah, Talk to Me is a pretty scary and refreshing horror film, and I'm really curious to see where it will go as a franchise.

Talk To Me (2022)
Tumblr media
Summary: A group of friends (Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Oris Dhanji, Zoe Terakes, Chris Alosio) learn how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand, and do it over and over again... until one of them (Wilde) goes too far and blurs the line between the real world and spirit world.
Enjoyable concept, excellent practical effects, fleshed-out characters, good cliffhanger ending. Doesn’t explore themes as well as it wants to, however.
Rating: 3.5/5
