The owner of a business suffered minor injuries after their shop caught fire Tuesday evening.

Kitt Equipment Trailer Sales at 1093 Smithers Rd. caught fire around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, and took over 30 firefighters from different departments to extinguish it. They remained on scene for roughly six hours dealing with hot spots and securing the site.

George Klemm, deputy fire chief of the Errington Volunteer Fire Department, said the building was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived.

“Consistent water is always an issue there and we did a pretty good job of getting constant water on it, but being the fire load is fairly heavy in industrial buildings it takes a while to put things out.”

A homeless Vancouver Island man is earning plenty of recognition for the work he’s doing to clean up local highways. Jayson Perry lost his business, then his home during the COVID-19 pandemic. With time on his hands, the former woodworker began cleaning up trash along the highways near Parksville and Qualicum Beach. Perry stepped those efforts up over the past four months, and has been logging eight-hour days several times a week to clean up the roads.

PARKSVILLE — One person remains in hospital with significant injuries after a motorist hit two pedestrians on the Island Hwy in Parksville

Oceanside RCMP, local firefighters and paramedics were called to Hwy. 19A at Moilliet St. on Monday, March 6 at about 3:20 p.m. after a man and woman, both in their early 40’s, were hit.

Oceanside RCMP Sgt. Shane Worth said the woman was taken to hospital with critical injuries, while the man sustained minor injuries after the pair were hit by a Toyota Corolla.

B.C. Premier David Eby answered questions from reporters Monday morning regarding the recent news that Parksville-Qualicum MLA Adam Walker has been ousted from the BC NDP caucus.

“This relates to an employment relationship complaint under our collective agreement,” Eby said.

“There is no criminal investigation, it is not a criminal matter. This is a concerning and serious issue.”

What exactly the issue is was not explained in detail.

Eby did share that Walker’s recent stint in the news regarding a wrestling match with a deer is not related to the decision.

“It went through our formal collective agreement investigation process led by caucus and based on the conclusion of that investigation I determined Mr. Walker could not continue.” [...]
