Ok, so, I've never watched any of the qsmp streams, but I read your rambling about it and read your one shots abt it, and uh do you have any advice on how to get into watching the streams? Like where do I start? How to catch up on missed lore? Stuff like that

well there are a lot of different POVs you can choose to catch up on and which one(s) you choose will definitely affect your understanding of what's going on. if you want to just catch up on the primary major story beats overall (federation lore, main egg lore) this channel on youtube has made 3 videos so far summarizing the lore as it goes on. I haven't watched these videos myself so I can't say how accurate they are or if they leave anything important out, but I've heard positive things!

now if you wanna catch up on more individual lore/character dynamics and all that then you're facing a bit more of a challenge. I believe quackity has most of his qsmp vods uploaded on his vod channel so you can definitely check those out for his story stuff. if you wanna understand my fics better wilbur has the smallest number of qsmp vods out of the cc's at least somewhat tied into the storyline so it shouldn't be too hard to catch up on his stuff. his vod from day 1 of the qsmp has one of the funniest moments from any wilbur stream ever (yes I am referring to that moment he was talking to max) but I don't think you need to watch a ton from any of the day 1 POV's after the first hour or so.

while phil is the pov I watch the most for qsmp, he's definitely less involved in the plot. but unlike what I keep seeing some people on twt and tumblr say, he DOES participate in the rp and does care about the lore. he just doesn't go out of his way to get super involved in it and likes making 4th wall breaking jokes. but yeah if you're looking for more lore based stuff, phil might not be a great pov to watch as your primary.

now bad is the english speaking cc most involved in the heavy federation lore stuff, so his vods are definitely good to check out if you're looking for an english speaking cc to watch. jaiden's also definitely tied into it and has her own very interesting plotline going on atm involving the federation, but she doesn't stream as often so there are a few more gaps with her compared to bad who's been daily streaming for months now.

now for the cc's who don't primarily speak english, it's definitely a bit more of a challenge to watch those POVs if you don't speak the cc's language, but when many cc's are in a group they'll usually switch to english since that's the most common language on the server. also there's the translator that most of them have up on their screen, but it's not super accurate and a lot of the time cc's forget to switch it between languages so I don't rely on it much. for lore stuff, cellbit is a great choice because he's been heavily involved in investigating the federation and solving puzzles and all that since he first got on the server. from the french side, baghera jumped into lore stuff pretty quickly too so I highly recommend her pov as well

again I don't know how detailed/what the summary videos do and don't include but if you see clips from certain streams on that summary video that look interesting, I definitely recommend going to the vod itself and watching at least a bit of it. the group dynamic between all the players on the island is so delightful to watch. so many great friendships have formed bc of this server and it's so much fun to watch them grow in real time.

more than anything though when you're trying to catch up, go through the tumblr tag! follow people who liveblog a lot! follow the updates accounts on twitter! I actually don't catch many streams, but I'm usually pretty up to date on the big plot stuff happening on the server at all times just from what I see on my dash. read posts and check out the tags to absorb info via dash osmosis. that's how I caught up on dsmp when I first got into it back in january 2021 lol

I saw a post that put something into words SO WELL for me that I'm now going to have to ramble a bit about it myself.

ANYWAY! This is about Q!Baghera and Q!Etoiles 'adopting' Dapper without talking to Q!Bad first (This post is about the characters, I just won't put Q! infront of each name because I know I'll forget at some point. No neg to anyone)

Ramble starts under cut v

So let's get how I feel about it out the way. I don't like it. People insisting Baghera is Dapper's mum is frustrating to me. Baghera and Dapper insisting she's his mum without acknowledging Bad isn't comfortable with it is frustrating.

Why do I think this? Because it's inconsiderate to Bad's feelings. Bad has been a single parent from the start. He never had an assigned partner like everyone else, even if they left. It has always been Bad and Dapper. He's on every single day to see his son, the first day he takes a day off isn't a proper day off (as the cc!Bad was still online, just didn't stream).

So he takes his first real break in months, he comes back, excited to see his son again just to find out he's got another parent while he was gone. No consulting him about it. Just forced to accept it.

Yes, Dapper is happy so he never truly complains, but it'd still hurt. It's been him and Dapper only from the start, yet he takes a 5 day break and suddenly someone else has claimed Dapper as their son. It'd probably feel like he's being replaced because he's been deemed not good enough.

Something I want to point out is Bad's reason for not wanting to suggest adopting Tallulah. He didn't want it to feel like he was replacing her papi, saying he'll never be back. So if you take that into account on how Bad sees things, then he's feeling like he's replaceable and been replaced. Even if Dapper doesn't think so at all, that's how it'd come across, especially with the point of he was only gone for 5 days before being 'replaced'.

Sure, every egg should feel the love of the island, but that doesn't mean becoming their parent. They can show they love an egg without deciding they're now a parent to the egg. Bad has shown this loads of times! With every gift he gets them, every time he's happy to watch them, every time he makes sure they're prepared enough to survive and listening to their wants and needs.

It'd hurt a lot to see your kid decide they need more parents. Because that suggests the lack of something their first parent isn't giving them. And pouring your heart and soul into this kid, just for them to decide that the second you're gone they need someone else as their parent.

There's multiple people who don't come on daily (Phil and Fit mainly) yet people don't insist on adopting their kids. So how come the 5 days Bad isn't on someone suddenly decides they should be Dapper's parent without consulting Bad what so ever, even if Dapper asked you'd still consult Bad!

While Baghera isn't trying to take Dapper away from Bad and has 0 bad intentions, they both still ignore Bad's feelings about the topic and insist he should be okay with it because they are and it's a 2 v 1 therefore they win.

While I love Baghera, this has annoyed me and her insistence on how Bad is in the wrong about it frustrates me. The fandom insisting she is Dapper's other parent gets frustrating as it feels like people can't just be a single parent from the start (everyone else had an assigned partner, even if they only appeared 1 day, except Bad) without needing another parent, even if they're just the fun parent!

Just my thoughts brought out because of another post, so this was a rant about it lol.

i think something i like about the dream smp is how when a character is anxious or pissed or upset the actors dont hold back. like sometimes ive seen better acting from fundy than i have in professional goddamn movies. its genuinely really cool how the ccs are willing to sound.. broken, when the situation needs it. they scream and shout and cry and they have moments where they just freeze up, or on the flipside- moments where they just ramble out anything they can because they cant deal with silence.

im talking bbh and skeppys arguments over the egg, fundys breakdowns in his nightmares and broken sobs after wilburs revival, tubbo choking up near the crater and his strained voice when he cries, puffys pure anger in the red banquet, sam and ranboos amazing ability to sound crushed whenever their characters are sad, quackitys giggling panic whenever he feels like hes winning, schlatts confident rage when he was suspicious of someone, wilbur banging on his desk and screaming out about his paranoid delusions, nikis simmering anger and mourning tone, jacks pained admission that tommys dead, tommys stuttering and sputtering attempts to understand why everythings so unfair.

the quiet, exhausted way characters mourn, the fervent rambles when theyre trying to justify their actions, the pained pauses when theres nothing they can say to help, the pure fear they show when getting chased or hurt, their quiet and broken attempts to tell themselves that theyre okay when theyre not, the way they all shout over each other just for everyone to go silent when one makes a quiet threat, the way so many of them panic before dying, the way some of them show rage, the way some of them simply show broken and sad acceptance that this is it, the quiet and pained goodbyes when theres nothing left to say at all.

the acting isnt perfect, of course not, but theres just so much emotion in the smp. theres no judgement for being emotional or too wordy or seemingly toppling over from what may seem like the smallest things. when characters on the smp break, they break.

ccs like wilbur, bbh, quackity, fundy, tubbo, ranboo, tommy, skeppy, sam- and more im forgetting of course- theyre all so good at sounding broken when they need to. its a genuine breath of fresh air to see a popular piece of media where emotion is not only allowed but encouraged. "it's okay to cry, i cry too!" is something that clearly many characters believe and even the ones who dont are so genuine sounding in their emotions and show them so well that even in events like tubbos reaction to tommys death you can tell how effected he truly was.

the dream smp isnt professional, nowhere close. most of the actors have little experience, theres many moments where things fall flat, and quite a few of them take a while to shake off the embarassment of doing this for a block game roleplay, but i think the unpolished feel honestly only makes it all better. real people dont sound perfect, they dont always know exactly what to say and exactly when to break pauses or when to let others speak and they dont always react how they should. on the smp, characters sound awkward. they fumble over words and interrupt each other and sometimes theyre quiet and nearly apathetic during traumatizing moments. it feels real, genuine, from the heart, and thats something that really draws me into it all. semi-improv rp my beloved

The Quackity Meta: Justice without the Blindfold

[Anonymous asks: (DSMP) Somebody talk to me about Quackity and Eret’s character. I wanna talk about what Quackity’s views on power are with what he’s planning to do with Sam along with whatever he saw in the egg. I wanna talk about why Eret thinks reviving Wilbur is the best option for the sever to lead and their views on what a leader should be with them being the king of the Dream SMP. I wanna talk about Quackity planning to create a casino for the server to rise to the top. What does it mean to be king?]

At the heart of every conflict, if you look closely enough, you will find a similarity. Two contrasting ideals will reveal their own likeness, in the stage they play out their war – they both fight for the same result; to be known and followed and asserted, and in this they are the same. There would be no conflict if both sides shared nothing in common.

Lets talk about Quackity.

We'll gloss over a good deal of Quackity's history to get to the meat of this discussion, which involves Technoblade. But there are a a few lesser known facts about Quackity's early days on the server that are relevant to the discussion, like  that Quackity joined the server because of Tommy.

Namely, he joined for The Cartel, a short-lived organization comprised of him, Tommy, Tubbo and Jack Manifold, and their aims of obtaining power over the entire server by getting a monopoly on one object, the Phantom Membrane.

(Trivia: This is why Technoblade had to strike a deal with Tommy for the membranes – Phantoms are turned off on the Dream SMP now, so their monopoly actually ended up working. (Un)fortunately, Tommy traded nearly his whole supply for the priceless act of... making Techno scream really loud and talk in a funny voice. Worth it.)

However, Tommy's interest in the Cartel waned almost immediately, to Quackity's frustration. Tommy was constantly busy with his Vice Presidential duties in L'manberg. Quackity wasn't entirely left out, and he helped Tommy on multiple occaisions, but this was back in Wilbur's L'manberg, where non-europeans were strictly banned.

Quackity would slowly come to resent Tommy for this over time. He joined the server to be with him, took his side in nearly every conflict, including the ones that were L'manberg-oriented, and yet he wasn't allowed to be a citizen of his friend's own nation.

The resentment would reach a boiling point when Quackity discovered Wilbur's bid to consolidate power by running a sham election – with a one party system. Quackity challenged him, formed Swag 2020, and the rest is history...

The takeaway here is that from the start, Quackity has been shunted aside by people in power – Tommy, Wilbur, and then later, Schlatt. This wouldn't prevent him from executing his own immoral power grabs, but that trait – the distaste for people with power holding it over him, is one that would stick around, and become even more prominent later... Quackity has more reason than most to hate tyranny.

But “Tyranny” Is a word thrown around on the SMP often enough, that it's probably up there with “betrayal” and “pop-off” in total wordcount. But few use it more commonly, or more persuasively, than Quackity and Technoblade.

This begs the question: what is Tyranny in a M/inec/raft role play, and why do Quackity and Technoblade both detest it so much while still hating each other?

Well, after a moderate amount of research, I have discovered the following:

Tyranny is complicated.

...No, but really. Tyranny is very old concept. The words originates in, you guessed it, Ancient Greece, but conceptually, the idea goes waaaay back.

Now, that last thing I wanna do is give anyone a history lesson. I'd suck at it and I haven't done that much research. But the takeaway here is that “Tyranny” has come to be defined in fairly vague terms. We'll look at a few different ones in reference to the SMP.

Oxford dictionary defines a Tyrant as: A cruel and oppressive ruler. / a person exercising power or control in a cruel, unreasonable, or arbitrary way. / (especially in ancient Greece) a ruler who seized power without legal right.

Lets look at the first and last definitions:  A cruel and oppressive ruler; (especially in ancient Greece) a ruler who seized power without legal right.

By these definitions, one could call Quackity tyrannical during his term as Tubbo's VP. He exercises the power granted to him as a government official to spearhead an operation to execute a man without trial. He violently invades the home of a citizen and then puts said man on house arrest, and to subdue the target of this operation he threatens a pet (-a vague but ostensibly severe criminal act in the terms of m/inec/raft specifically-) and then reveals to Techno that the reason he's doing this actually has nothing to do with the crime Techno was accused of, and it is instead a ploy to consolidate power.

Quackity is leveraging his position in the government to amass power, and using that power to harm individuals (Philza and Techno,) in process. As an added bonus, his position in that government came from usurping Schlatt, a legitimately elected official. Thus, Quackity is a Tyrant.

But there, in Schlatt's government is where things get complicated.

Quackity had some power in Schlatt's government. Not the same kind as he did in New L'manberg, but arguably a more unrestrained form – Quackity could basically do whatever he wanted, as long as it pleased Schlatt. In New L'manberg, Quackity needed to convince not only Tubbo, but the rest of the cabinet whenever he wanted to initiate a new project. New L'manberg, while still maintaining a ruling class, had a far more equal distribution of power than Manberg did. It was still democratic.

And while we're on the topic of Quackity as Schlatt's VP, Quackity had almost instant regret the day of the election. He was undermining Schlatt from the start, questioning him, trying to stop Tubbo from breaking the signs that read “if you break this sign, you hate your viewers” and freeing Niki when Schlatt trapped her in Jack Manifold's house and then whispering at her to run.

Quackity only fell into step with Schlatt in the aftermath of Election day, when he saw a major desire fulfilled; the tearing down of L'manberg's walls. These walls were a symbol of L'manberg's isolationist roots that prevented Quackity from joining in the first place. It was one of his biggest promises whilst campaigning.

From this point on, up until the festival, Quackity would be in support of Schlatt. The things he did try to push back on would be downplayed and ignored, if not scorned. This period of time is difficult to pick apart where Quackity's personal morals and ideals begin, and Schlatt's influence ends. The steadily worsening abusive dynamic between them doesn't help this vagueness, either.

I point this out because I've seen people conflate Quackity's abuse at the hands of Schlatt, and his willingness to participate in Schlatt's rule as being of the same root; implying that Quackity only followed Schlatt because he was in an abusive relationship with him, when the reality is far more complicated. Yes, their relationship was a major factor in Quackity's actions, but downplaying his ambition and willingness to accept Schlatt's Tyranny when it helped him realize his own goals does a disservice to the nuance of Manberg-era Quackity.

What all of this points to is an individual who has a strong, some might say defining sense of Justice, yet also a susceptibility to Temptation. Quackity’s experiences with disenfranchisement by Wilbur and Tommy, coupled with his Dark horse victory in the election paints him in a sympathetic, even heroic light. But the way he slowly relinquished more and more power to Schlatt, and ended up indulging in the fruits of tyrannical gains when they proved they could get him what he wanted.

...

So, back to the question... Is Quackity a tyrant?

The answer to that question is a solid “mmmmaaaybe??”

It comes back to what you consider Tyranny. Quackity has never held complete power – he has always, always been scrapping and struggling and fighting to get a foothold in the machinations of the truly powerful, like Dream and Wilbur. He's very much an underdog story.

On the other hand, the times that Quackity has held positions of power, he's done some questionable shit. People like to forget that, while he was deeply disturbed by it, he wasn't exactly against Tubbo's execution at the festival. Putting Phil on house arrest and executing Techno without trial also count against him.

Like most things on the SMP, it's just complicated. Quackity's motivations run deep and aren't always obvious. He doesn't seem to want to hurt people just for the sake of hurting them, or use his power in arbitrary ways, but when he can personally justify it, the sacrifice of his moral integrity gets severe sometimes.

What it looks like is that more than anything else, Quackity wants control, and to never, ever lose his own autonomy. That is also why he despises Technoblade.

What the Fuck Are these Characterizations: The Essay

Full warning: This is only concerning Tommy's stream made today, 4/29/2021. I know Ranboo has streamed after Tommy but I haven't watched that.

On with the essay.

A lot happened.

Tommy tried to kill Dream, Dream actually killed Ghostbur, Wilbur is back (pog). It's a lot. A lot of plot and a lot of emotions. I will preface this with the usual "holy hell these people are pretty damn good actors for having no formal training as far as I'm aware." They get their emotions across very clearly and that's kinda why I'm making this in the first place. The way some of the characters acted in Tommy's 4/29 stream is a bit odd in my opinion.

Now, I will concede that I have not been diligent with the Dream SMP lore. I've been given broad strokes and have seen various clips but I have definitely not been on top of it. I may have missed streams entirely and you all more avid fans may be able to name scenes that I haven't seen that rationalize some of these reactions that I will be criticizing. If you can, please do so! I'd love to start a dialogue over this!

So, how I'm gonna break this all up is to take a look at Tommy, Wilbur, Ranboo, and Awesamdude and how their CCs characterized them during the stream. I'll sing praises where they are due and point out my criticisms where they arise. Then, I will try to surmise some meta as to why I think these characterizations came to be in the first place.

Tommy

Tommy, to me, has the best characterization in this. CC Tommy clearly has a very good sense of what he wants from his character and has been playing into that line of thought from the beginning of this whole debacle.

Tommy is scared, paranoid, and pissed off. Ever since he left the prison he avoids taking damage like the plague, rambles indecisively, is easily sent into a panic, and is hypersensitive to the people around him. He panics when he sees weapons out and one crucial thing that he made clear from the start was that he wants Dream dead.

Straight out of limbo, Tommy concludes that Dream needs to die. From there he plans this whole mission with Ranboo, Tubbo, and Ghostbur to get in and kill Dream. He says that Dream can't keep living with this power at his fingertips, and from before his final death, Tommy clearly wants to be rid of his abuser, adding a personal layer to his plan. Tommy is stubborn and determined since the beginning, sacrificing his life and disks for L'manberg and refusing to believe that his home is gone until the place is blown to bedrock. Of course, he would stick to his plan to a T.

Now, is this a smart decision to sneak into the highest security area in the entire SMP? Fuck no. It's a stupid idea. Even if Tommy hadn't messed up, Sam would've seen Dream die to a floating axe and kept Tommy and Ghostbur in that containment cell. It would've been a one-way ticket, especially given what we see of Sam in this stream.

But this all makes sense for the character CC Tommy is playing. Tommy isn't thinking about how smart of a decision this is and he hardly ever does when he takes action. He shoots from the hip, takes his first instincts, and acts on them.

It's easy to draw a clear line of progression of Tommy as a character from season 1 to this moment in season 3 and past Ghostbur's death. His hyperventilating as he tries to get his plan to work after it failed, Trying to save Ghostbur from what he went through, lashing out at Sam, and yelling at Wilbur. All of this in line with who Tommy is as a character and how events have changed him. This is a good characterization.

Wilbur

Wilbur has changed a lot since we've seen him last, both alive and dead. Since he's been alive, Wilbur has changed his tune from "I want to die" to "hell sucks, mate." What's particularly interesting is that this sentiment that he has from being alive carried for a long time into his limbo, as evidenced by his appearance in the season 2 finale on the bench. He wanted to "stay dead" at that point. Since we've seen him in limbo, he's gone from content in his situation and understanding why he's there and that he's there forever.

Now we have Revivedbur. Revivedbur is ecstatic to be alive again. He goes from numb to embracing feeling again. The fandom once thought that Revivedbur would be annoyed with or hateful towards Dream for bringing him back turned into joy and reverence. This is quite a drastic leap. Bad characterization.

But it isn't.

I have seen one clip from Ranboo's stream on 4/29 and that is Ranboo telling Philza that Wilbur is alive. In this bit, after mentioning that Wilbur has been in limbo for a perceived 13 and a half years, Phil says "13 years is a long time to be away... he almost certainly isn't the same person... people can change quite a lot in a single year, two years, three years, four years, even five years, Ranboo."

Wilbur has been gone for 13 years. He's been in the same place with no change other than Tommy for 13 fucking years. That's 13 years where we heard from him 2 times. We know virtually nothing about what those 13 years were like for him, but from what Wilbur has said, it was torture to him. He was stagnant, stuck in a fucking tube station for 13 years, unable to leave no matter how hard he tried.

We know so little about how his time in limbo changed him because it's such a long span of time with radio silence. I dare say this is fucking great characterization.

Ranboo

This is where I start having some issues, and this is where I have the least amount of context. From what I've seen, Ranboo is little miss angst who forgets things and is constantly on the verge of having a panic attack (hyperbole). From what I have surmised of his character in various contexts, serious and dramatic scenes and domestic ones, Ranboo really cares about the people around him and is scared of himself and his mind.

So why is it that he straight up just sneers at Tommy, saying "the hell did you do?"

I'm really just focusing on this because it just seems really off to me in the context of his character. Ranboo was in on this plan. It's pretty common knowledge that the only person with revive powers is Dream. Ranboo doesn't know everything that happened within the prison, sure, but why is he so quick to assume that Tommy was the root cause? Is it because he's been hanging out with the world's 2nd biggest Tommy hater, Niki (the character for clarification)? I honestly don't know where this jump-in assumption is coming from. Given what I understand of his character, this line and the implications I'm getting are just a bit out of character. Feel free to explain why I'm wrong because I am not in this loop whatsoever.

Sam is where I have the biggest issue. How does a man go from living on an isolated island in grief over a death he could've prevented if only he had been quicker, to yelling at that same formerly dead person that he was at fault for the death/revival of another person?

Now, one thing that is strengthened by this characterization is Sam's dedication to the rules. He has his strict protocol and he is not going to let that slip up for anything. He wants to keep Dream in prison and never let him out.

But I'm just having a hard time grappling with a man so quick to blame himself last time something like this happened being so quick to place blame on a child he, from what I've seen, had a good relationship with. It feels like I'm missing something here.

Yeah, Tommy broke into the prison, but why is Sam's first thought that Tommy was trying to break dream out? This harsh turn on Tommy just doesn't come across right to me.

Why Did This Happen?

I do think there could be a meta reason as to why these don't land right to me. These two characterizations are centered around Tommy. How people are reacting to Tommy's actions. Tommy and Dream are the head of the prison stuff right now. at least as far as I know. I'm not sure if Wilbur has come back on as a writer yet but last I heard it's still Tommy and Dream handling their shit. With the writers in mind, I wouldn't put it past them to decide to add more conflict with Tommy and other members of the SMP right now. The Egg is a bit busy with other things, Jack is just running the hotel, and the Syndicate doesn't really have any qualms with Tommy on any level that they would act on. It could be the writers trying to add conflict to the prison storyline by generating conflict between Tommy, Ranboo, and Sam with Wilbur being a fuckin wild card.

I don't know mate, I just wanted my thoughts out there and maybe be fucking pounded into the ground by people more knowledgeable than me.

why I don't think punz is still the spy

ive been seeing a lot of people talk about this theory and i understand why. dream did say he was going to do something that made everyone hate him and then leave- on the surface it makes sense that dream going to prison is just the long con and that punz is still working for him. if that turns out to be true i won't be surprised. however personally i see a few narrative and a few meta reason why i dont think punz still being a spy makes sense

under the cut in 3 parts: lore reasons, meta reasons, & what i think is actually happening

lore/story reasons

1. how would dream have known that tommy would suspect punz and pay him off? if this was the long con, dream would have need to plan this out when he paid sam to make the prison and before he asked punz to be the spy. while he could have predicted that people would suspect punz, the original plan involved a staged falling out between punz and dream with the fake bumpkin. dream couldn't have accounted for tommy paying punz off

2. punz' character is specifically in it for the money. he said it multiple times: hes a mercenary, he does what the money tells him to do. he had his internal conflict about keeping his deal with dream or following the money and its pretty clear he followed the money. and why wouldn't he? dream paid him 10 diamond blocks to be the spy, tommy paid him 36 diamond block, 36 gold block, 2 netherite ingots, and 6 pieces of tnt. which side do you think he's picking? even if he was supposed to still be on dreams side, i think hes not sticking around. dream can't pay him from prison

3. dream doesn't care about punz, so he should cut his losses. did we already forget dreams long ass villain monologue about how attachments are how he has power so he cut his own? dream does not consider punz a friend, just a tool and ally. there was a spot for punzo shulker in the trophy hall. having seen that now, i doubt punz wants to stick around- which is a big flaw in dreams plan. if dream wanted punz to still be on his side, there's no way he would have let punz know he doesn't care about him

meta reasons

1. c!punz being a spy/c!dream planning to go to prison undermines literally everything that happened. if that was a victory planned by c!dream then the closure of the disc war and the beginning of season three is meaningless, its not a new era of the dream smp, just a drawn out version of the same conflicts. fans are already upset the disc was went on this long, do you think they'd really keep it going? a badlass line on the level of "it was never meant to be" would be meaningless. sure thats an exciting twist, but i really think they want to move the story forward

2. c!dream knowing c!tommy would pay off c!punz would require dream to metagame his own story. they may have messy storylines, but they wouldn't actually metagame and have their characters do things based on information only the cc's know

3. i think c!punz spy falling out plot might just be a lose end. as unsatisfying as it is, because we didn't get the fake bumpkin staged c!punz and c!dream falling out, its likely that those plot threads ended up abandoned because the story was moving too fast. punz hasn't been super active on the smp and hes not big on lore an acting, so theres a good chance spy c!punz arc just wasn't quite what dream and punz originally wanted.

4. there are a ton of other story arcs to do. the main one being the bloodvines, which punz is involved in, but there is still: niki and jack, snowchester nukes, ggghostbur/alivebur/schaltt, and the syndicate. many of the people involved in this have been considered "side characters" and s3 is the time for them to shine. s3 is about moving from c!tommy with c!tubbo as the side kick to c!tubbo with c!tommy as the side kick, and c!dream was c!tommy's villain.

what i do think is happening

1. dream building the prison for himself makes sense. dream could have even planned that punz would stick by his side, but punz choosing the money tommy paid him wasn't part of it. the big event that drwam thought would make everyone hate him could have been him killing tubbo- almost everyone likes tubbo, even if they dont like tommy- so dreams ultimate plan was thwarted

2. dreams definitely getting out of prison. there are four ways i think this could happen: a) someone who put dream in prison is a spy or he convinces a someone to break him out, possibly by reveling the location of something valuable b) someone else breaks him out for their own personal gain (techno??) c) dream is let out because his help is needed (defeating the bloodvines?) d) dream brings schlatt back to life and schlatt breaks dream out of prison somehow

3. again. let me emphasise: BLOODVINES ARC. the crimson egg is literally taking over the server right now. bbh and ant are agents of it. punz is an active ally. puffy is a reluctant ally. they want to get eret on the eggs side next. punz bad and ant are trying to get sam under the eggs influence. THEY DONT KNOW HOW TO STOP IT. i think having to break dream out- maybe even tommy or tubbo having to do it- bc dreams the last hope to save everyone from evilboyhalo and the egg would be cool as fuck

hi i’m going to discuss the doomsday war streams and overall the conclusion of what i’d consider season 3 of the dream smp because hyperfixation go brrrrr 

(for clarity sake: season 1 is from when l’manberg defects from the dream smp to when wilbur decides to host an election. season 2 is from swag2020 vs pog2020 to the manberg vs pogtopia war on nov 16th. season 3 is from the start of tubbo’s presidency to the jan 6th doomsday war.) 

tldr: i definitely think the cc’s can look on what happened this season and improve greatly. that’s not to say this wasn’t a good season, there are a lot of things they’ve improved since season 1, but there are also things they can improve on in the future. this season was lacking a connecting thread or goal and it made it feel disjointed and left character’s in limbo. a way to fix that could be either scripting the story more strictly, fixing communication problems and/or making the plot into more self contained but slightly overlapping stories.

i think my biggest problem with this season was the fact that it felt so disjointed. one of the best things about the first season is the consistent plot line: l’manberg is trying to win independence. you had eret’s betrayal, dream’s tyranny, wilbur and tommy’s whole dynamic, and an underlying subplot with the disc war, but it all ultimately connected to l’manberg’s fight for independence. it’s what makes the first season so good and that kind of consistent plot is missing in this season. 

even the second season had the main plot of taking back manberg. there was wilbur’s insanity, but that tied back to the elections. there was tension between tubbo and tommy, but it tied back to the elections. even the badlands tied back to bad, ant, skeppy, and sam deciding they’re done with manberg AND pogtopia and deciding to stoke the fire. it all tied back and character’s had weeks to slowly develop with the setting. 

this season you had techno retiring, ghostbur reconciling with fundy, tubbo’s presidency, whatever was going on with schlatt and quackity?, george is king?, el rapid mexican l’manberg that whole thing, tommy’s exile, el rapids fighting dream smp/eret’s kingship?, the butcher army, techno UNretiring and teaming with tommy, tommy using techno to get his discs back, techno using tommy to destroy l’manberg, the prison, the bloodvines, and probably more im forgetting. there was a LOT going on, even techno and wilbur have ooc acknowledged this. and in my opinion it was just too much. character’s weren’t given enough time to develop naturally and the pacing had to go fast enough to fit all the plot into it, leaving little time for the character’s relationships to develop with the plot. 

most notably this is a problem with character’s like niki, fundy, ranboo (though not too bad with his character) and eret. eret had worked hard on a redemption arc and then had to go back to being king because george didn’t want to be involved (then changed his mind which...okay) which really fucked up all of the development he spent a LOT of time on during the second season. niki had to jump from siding with tubbo and tommy against wilbur’s insanity to suddenly tubbo’s president and her character just...can’t know that wilbur is dead for some reason? and now she needs content so she has to scrap together an anti-hero plot for herself. fundy’s works a little better i feel, with his lowkey insanity arc he’s having as of now, but the problem with him is he didn’t get enough lowkey plot moments to show his character’s devolution from neglected to vengeful. ranboo was thrown head first into the plot and while he’s doing an AMAZING job of keeping himself afloat, he just hasn’t had enough time to make his character’s mental decline seem believable, at least to me. not enought has happened to his character for it to work out, due to pacing. all of these character’s are AMAZING concepts but the fact that they feel so inconsistent can be related back to the fact that there really wasn’t any time given to let character’s slowly develop and change, and instead they had to cram all of their character development into the first 30 mins of a plot important stream.

and i will offer a counterargument here of the fact that season 3 is when wilbur’s writing stopped and also was when it really started catching a large audiences’ interest. so naturally more people wanted to be involved and due to the nature of the way this story is told, where each character is an actual CC who needs content and can’t just be a background support character, there HAS to be a lot going on for everyone to get their slice. and i think that’s the ultimate downfall of using this medium to tell a story. you NEED those background characters, the characters that don’t have to be 3 dimensional, the characters that don’t need to be there for everything and get their lines in. so i can’t fault them for having a clunky story when it has to be that way to be fair. 

ultimately i still really enjoy the story, and i hope this doesn’t sound too nitpicky. it’s downfall, of everyone having to be an important character, is also what makes it so good! don’t like the “main character”? go watch someone else, who’s the main character of their own POV of the story. every single character is incredibly complex and has their own unique set of motivations, goals, and traits. it works really well with the running theme of history, and how not only does it repeat itself through miscommunication and ignorance but also how the opinion on events changes from who’s telling the story. the fact that you can tell every CC genuinely cares about their character also really does show in the acting and writing and just everything about the server and story. the flaws of the story are very easy to look over because of just how much time and care all of them put into this server and it really helps the story. an okay story written by passionate people with always be better than an amazing one written by apathetic storywriters; and the smp’s story is definitely more than just okay, at least to me. 

i didn’t want to write this just to complain and then offer no solution, so i do have a few ideas on how i’d like to see this fixed or at least improved. they actually already somewhat do this, but i feel like they could start breaking up the plot more. similarly to how there was the bloodvines plot going on at the same time as tommy’s exile plot, i feel like they could take a chunk of say 5-10 members and they each have their semi-contained plot. especially with l’manberg now destroyed, the thing that way tying a lot of the members together, it would be easier to do this. there can be connecting threads through the stories, like how tubbo and fundy would see the bloodvines or bad would visit tommy in exile, but ultimately not every character has to be involved in everyone else’s story. 

say you have tubbo, tommy, quackity, fundy, ghostbur, and dream for one plot of trying to get the discs back and making dream revive ghostbur. at the same time you can have techno, phil, ranboo, dream, and sam dealing with the prison and techno or someone being put in the prison with dream manipulating ranboo through his memories. bad, ant, sam, puffy, and skeppy can continue with the egg. eret, fundy, niki, and ghostbur work through the trauma they’ve gained from everything with l’manberg and their interpersonal relationships. similarly to how karl is doing the tales of the SMP right now, these storylines are self contained but characters can overlap and therefore so can relationships. 

my other solution would honestly be to just work on the seemingly lack of communication. make sure everyone is getting the content they need (with people having to understand that not everyone is going to get the animatic worthy lines every stream, and not everyone gets to play a huge part in each event.) however this entails having a much more concrete script, which highkey removes the charm of the smp. it also means that inevitably someone is going to not be getting good content, or content at all, and that’s not fun or good for anyone. ultimately i’d like to see an improvement on the communication for the plot (niki feeling excluded, george and eret not being told about important events, communicating when people are trying to have genuine canon important speeches and not BMing them (cough cough tubbo at niki about her taxes cough cough techno during tubbo and tommys reunion)) and that doesn’t necessarily have to mean a fully fleshed out script. 

in the end, what everyone on this server has managed to do with this storyline is something that’s genuinely impacted me! it’s opened my eyes to new ways stories can be told and this fandom is the first big one i’ve been in since probably fucking voltron or homestuck in the mid-2010s. i love what the CCs have managed to do, and while i think this was a healthy amount of criticism for the story i in no way want to demean just how much passion and effort the CCs put into this server. none of these people are professional story writers or actors so the amount of talent we’ve seen is astonishing. this is simply me expressing what i think the problems are, because every story has problems, especially one that’s being made with such a unique medium like improv roleplay streaming. if you have anything you wanna add please feel free to add to this post or reply! i’d love to see :) thank you for reading if you made it this far lmao

Sam and Tony parallels.

This is strictly for my own enjoyment seeing as Tony Stark and Awesamdude are probably my favorite comfort characters (even though both of them cause me a lot of pain).

But anyways, I’ve seen a handful of people draw the parallels between the two characters (Even Tommy saw it, bless you Tommy) and I just want to put my own ideas out there on how these two are pretty similar.

Again, this is about c!Sam, not Sam the CC.

First off, both of them could be considered to be mechanics. They both are pretty handy when it comes to machines and both of them are often described as being rather intelligent when it comes to machines. I think this is the most obvious similarity between the two of them is their abilities with machines and big brains.

I think the next obvious thing is that both of them become father figures to someone who really needs it. Tony to Peter and Sam to Tommy. Both Tommy and Peter needed that mentor, father-type figure in their lives and got Tony and Sam in return. Both of them strived to be the best for their kid and both of them lost their kid at one point, only to get the back and then lose them again. Sam lot Tommy in the prison to Dream like Tony lost Peter on Titan to Thanos, and then when both came back, Tony died and Sam became dead to Tommy.

Then you’ve got Tony’s suits/AIs and Sam Nook. Both of these things were created to benefit someone (Tony’s suits/AI helped him and Sam Nook helped Tommy) and are both impressive works of machinery made by both of them respectfully.

Oh, and let’s not forget that the two have similar fears/traumas. While the situation in which they earned these fears and traumas are different, both of their anxieties are essentially pretty similar. Sam gets his trauma from the Egg, Tommy’s death, and Dream himself, while Tony’s came from the cave he was held hostage in, flying into the portal from the Battle of New York, and the vision of seeing all his friends dead in AoU. As a result of these events, both of them turn to busying themselves with projects that they believe will protect themselves and or others. Tony makes a bunch of suits to protect himself (IM 3) and Sam turns to prioritizing keeping Dream in the prison above all else.

As a result of their insecurities and trauma, they made things that they thought would protect the people they loved and cared for, but ultimately it didn’t work out the way that they wanted it to. Tony had Ultron, a program he hoped to use to protect from future alien attacks and Sam has Pandora’s Vault to keep the biggest villain on the server in captivity. Ultron corrupted and nearly destroyed life on planet earth as we know it and Sam got corrupted by the prison to the point where he’s lost sense of what’s morally right and wrong.

Basically, both of them have somehwhat unhealthy coping mechanism where they preoccupy themselves with work to ignore what's going on in their life, so much so that they push everyone who's trying to help away and end up making things worse for themselves since they end up forgetting to worry about themselves once in a while. Both of them need some self care,,

Their projects also ruined their love life (granted Tony was able to recover his afterward). Pepper got annoyed with how much time Tony was spending with the suits, making them and whatnot, to the point where Tony had to choose between her and the suits (IM 3). Ponk got killed, tortured, and his arm chopped off because of all the time that Sam was spending in the prison, thus ruining their relationship. (Not to mention, Tony calls Pepper ‘Pep’ and Sam calls Ponk ‘Ponkie’)

I think both of them can also be seen as Lawful Good. Doing whatever they can legally to make sure that things go well. We see it in Captain America: Civil War when Tony wants to side with the government and create the Sokovia Accords, guilty about all the damage he has caused to the world due to Ultron and his company prior to becoming Iron Man. Then we see it with Sam dedicating himself to the role as “The Warden” and keeping justice and law in order on the server to any means necessary.

Aside from actions and events, both of them also have somewhat of a similar personality as well, though one could argue that this isn’t the case. However, like Tony, Sam cares deeply about those he loves and feels the need to protect them at all costs. Tony’s greatest fear (revealed by Wanda’s mind tricks in AoU) was losing his friends and it could be argued that that’s the same with Sam. In his case, the Egg would be Wanda, putting thoughts into his head that he is unable to protect those he loves.

They’ve also got quite the ego. Though I can see why one would think that Sam doesn’t really have one, I can assure you that he does. It’s even on the wiki as his biggest weakness (or it was before he started to corrupt and spiral). Though maybe Tony is more sassy and cocky than Sam is, both of them have an ego and it’s somewhat of a hubris to them. If anything, their ego makes it harder for them to share burdens, making them think that they should be the only one to carry burdens and protect everyone else instead of looking after themselves every once in a while.

Oh, also they’re the characters that tend to get a lot of dislike/hate for certain actions. Granted, Sam’s most recent actions don’t have any reason to be defended (torture and cutting off your bf’s arm? I don’t think so.) but before that, at the start of the prison arc, there were several people who didn’t like his character because they believed that Dream shouldn’t have been treated the way they thought he was being treated. Because to them, Sam was torturing Dream, when in fact, that wasn’t the case until Quackity. Tony also got a lot of shit, being blamed for just about anything, with most Marvel villains becoming villains because Tony had wronged them in some minor way (Looking at you, Mysterio). If anything, I think Sam is what people who hate Tony think that Tony is. Some cold-hearted bastard who loves money and could care less about people. And that’s totally not the case.

Also, both of them are perfectionists with an eye for aesthetic and design. Sam spends a lot of time on his projects making things look nice and Tony likes to look nice as well (Come on, his three-piece suit in CA:CW? Man’s got style).

And I guess another obvious connection that I should’ve mentioned before was both of them being super rich. Granted, Tony is rich in the real world sense, being a billionaire and all while Sam is more ‘Minecraft rich’ with all the materials and tridents that he has, but they’re both rich and that’s what counts (Capitalism, y’know).

Stark Industries and Awesamdude Construction. Or at least, both of them are in charge of some kind of industry, Tony weapons manufacturing, Sam sever builds. So in a way, both of them are business men who know how to handle companies.

Last but not least, both of them have fat asses. (CANONICALLY SAM HAS A DUMPY DO NOT COME FOR ME)

Anyways, in short, my favorite kind of character is a traumatized smart father-figure and I can’t wait till the next similarity I have to add to these two is that they both have died.

yeah!! it’s cool too see how they will heal and get better (at least hopefully lol) with their current circumstances cause like they’ve all hurt other people in some way and of course forgiveness is not required at all and not everyone will be able to work together. there are fics that make the egg kind of like a common enemy for everyone on the server including c!dream which forces them to work together but I haven’t really seen one that does that concept well yet. in terms of redemption I think people tend to take it as including forgiveness which like the people hurt aren’t obligated to forgive everyone. it’s why I tend to dislike fics where c!tommy instantly forgives c!dream cause there’s more complexity to it than that which I think is fun to explore and like I think for any kind of positive change for those two characters will probably happen if they stay away from eachother.

also currently in the lore there’s just more conflict, even with c!puffy trying to help at least c!tommy we’ve got the egg (I’m an eggpire apologist what can I say) plus the las nevadas plot (I’m so excited for this) and the prison arc and it’s effects on c!dream, c!quackity and c!sam (god please cc!dream drop lore I beg TELL ME ABOUT THE COURTYARD) and the syndicate that had been pretty chill but now one of its members is locked in prison so that’s fun too (I hope I’m not forgetting any major plot point lol) This will definitely make the moving forward and healing a bit difficult

mmm yeah true age definitely makes a difference in how much flack people get but also how people handle it I’d say like for some younger people it’s 100% their first fandom and first online space so they’re pretty bad at handling themselves online. also while I dislike the “they’re a child” argument when it comes to the lore it’s interesting how much emphasis the fandom puts on the age of the characters

oohhh yes I find it sooo interesting how we determine the severity of crimes in our minds when it comes to media and real life!!!! I’ve been thinking about it for weeks in terms of fandom and real life cause I think it’s interesting and keep talking to people in my life about it completely randomly lmaooooo. like it’s intriguing (I got bored of the word interesting) how seriousness of crimes is determined in our minds and even in the law like it’s gotta do with its effect on other people I think that this would apply to the law as well. also yeah!! the whole “acceptable” crimes thing is super interesting to me cause when it comes to media murder is reduced in severity a lot and it’s cool to see the effect of that on character analysis cause like in real life murder is and should be deemed as a terrible crime. also when it comes to dsmp lore, especially cause of the minecraft mechanics applying real world rules such as criminal ones doesn’t always work. I would lowkey love to have that conversation about real world stuff adjkhsb

the povs 100% help. looking and c!techno for this I think is really interesting cause he definitely has his flaws too but the vast majority of cc!techno viewers would be considered c!techno apologists that can’t see his flaws. every other character too of course. this also why I think c!dream apologists tend to be better at character/lore analysis cause he doesn’t stream his pov. not always of course and I’ve definitely seen some c!dream apologist takes that I disagree with which just makes it all even more interesting honestly. main takeaway, cc!dream please drop lore it’s been months since that teaser

this is definitely the longest ask I’ve ever sent and I didn’t proof read it at all so sorry for that and any possible mistakes lol

honestly with the egg stuff and being the common enemy doesn’t really do it for me? I always joke that the author is c!dream ajdjkd because I think a common enemy wont fix things for the sever, they need to stop the cycle of revenge/abuse which is going to take a longass time because everyone is hurting so much. They syndacate has gotten closest to stopping that cycle out of everyone in the server which is fucking hilarious. I agree that forgiveness isn’t required but for both c!dream and c!tommy if one of them doesn’t walk away and/or apologize they’ll both keep ruminating on it forever. The fic that started this conversation was great because one of the part where c!tommy comes in and apologizes to c!dream. The closure and freedom it gave c!tommy to just fully walk away content with the last thing he said to c!dream is way way better than a future where c!dream just straight up dies. Here’s the thing, people are a lot more forgiving of the dead so while tommy might get freedom from that, he’d never get closure from it and I think it would continue to haunt him

I also feel like with fandoms there were a lot of unspoken rules that became cringe as the older fandoms grew up if that makes any sense. Like there were/are guidelines on how to be decent in fan spaces but a lot of them were unspoken and if you speak them, the people who would need it think it’s cringe. Sometimes I get secondhand embarrassment when I see those “fandom rules” posts but then I read it and it’s all really good advice?? It’s like hey don’t send death threats don’t harass people and just chillax we’re all here for fun

The “they’re a child” thing is interesting to me because while I also use it to excuse a lot of the dream smp minors, the age range I use “they’re just a kid” for is a lot more lenient than most. I add sap, niki, jack, and quackity to it as well as anyone in the 18 through 20 age range as well. Maybe this is because I’m 19 so I’m like “oh shit im still a kid the fuck”. Another side of this that I think is really funny is that in real life that’s 100% not how it works? Like there are jails for children minors aren’t just allowed to do whatever and let me tell you c!tommy would 1000% be in juvie right now. Minors on the dream smp have way more rights then minors in real life but sadly that also comes with way more responsibility and I think we should make c!tommy pay taxes

Eggs in basket

I have tried to write what I’m feeling twice before. Have not suceeded. Third times a charm. Shout out to Easter and CrissChris. Easter=Spring. New beginnings.  Partly my thought was do not put all your eggs in one basket for the miarrens, but that would be hypocritical. Bird’s, Marie’s, NYC, anouncements. Eggs…We are all setting…waiting with batted breath. Get on with it! As aj says it is not that easy. The PR made significantly bad choices. They were one sided/sighted…eggs in their own basket. Whatever they may think, they were not thinking of Darren or his career. Unfortunately we all to often try and make decisions for others, thinking it is in their best interest, when in fact it is for ourselves. Over the past few months I have struggled personally, professionally and with my love for CC…often saying what gives them the right? We have…eggs in one basket. We defer to those who apparently went to school to learn how to do their job. What I have learned in today’s market they would be much better off if they sold there ideas to the market that is listening than trying to sell to those who are not listening. If your good the market will sell for you when the time is right. What the…am I trying to say/sell. PR is trying to put all their eggs in one basket, and they lost by selling something that is not real or substantial. Example. My brother is in town. He did not watch Glee. Doesn’t know Darren. He is a Country boy all the way…but he loves his truck and his Country music. I suggested he might like Darren’s new EP. He is now playing Every Single Life and Lost Boys Life…in his truck. He is also a fan of 80’s and 90’s music. I sold it not PR. We are so busy try to sell to everyone we forget our roots who we are there for. PR has only been focused on the dollar sign not what they are selling. This week has been pure pleasure watching the person who is Darren…he is selling himself. Promote that! It takes years for any one actor, band to sell to the masses. But it will given the right chance, with out all the baggage. Baggage should not be the focus. All the one-day-wonders are just that and not sustainable. Do not get me wrong I enjoyed them for a time too. But…I want Darren to be front and center for as long as he is willing, and I believe that is his aim too from what he says. Sell Darren for who he is. I realize he is physically beautiful to women, as well as having a pretty good sense of humor, he’s playful, and he sings and acts. Eggs…basket. Sell that not his personal life. Yea I know red carpets are impotant…let it be. They are a moment in time…I do not know a carpet that has defined an individual. I may be wrong. I have been before. But look what Darren has accomplished this week by flying free, look at all the networking he has done. He is a natural. Have some faith. Put him together with people he can shine with because of a common goal…to entertain, to laugh, have fun. Not a put on farce of selling his prefered love life. PR needs to stop thinking about what is good for PR…because they have not got it right yet. And thinking about who they may get to party with (narcissistic much) and sell Darren on his attributes.  Put you eggs in his basket, as it should be, and the birds won’t be a year old before they fly.

I concur.  There is nothing i wish more, though sadly I do not think it will happen, after this ridiculous farce of a romance ends and the staged break up occurs (which is beyond stupid as there are maybe 5 people who still believe and will continue to believe no matter what staged and/or doctored photos they release), I wish if he cannot come out, that they would just let him be single. Because nothing, nothing sells better than a free, and unburdened by the baggage he is forced to drag out, Darren. He is happy, bright, and quite frankly if we are talking about the bottom line, a more vibrant product to sell. So if they are not ready for the truth, I think they best strategy is silence.  Let Darren sell Darren. And this week is the perfect example.  He was an absolute pleasure to observe and quite effectively sold both his band and his new show.

I have thought a lot about a new beard. And I do think this is the likely strategy the will take.  Which to me is crazy. I doubt there are more than a handful of people at this point who believe the straight narrative.  Not to mention for the roles he continues to choose, I think its completely unnecessary.  But if this is the direction they are moving towards, the only way I see it working is as a bridge to the truth. And if that is the strategy I am completely on-board. I fully recognize that the the current situation is a disaster and they need to plan carefully for the future.

And just to clarify, so I do not sound like a hypocrite. I do not need the truth. I will continue to be a fan of both men no matter what story is sold about their private lives. 

I want Darren and Chris to be able to tell their truth, as it is the only way I see Darren truly surviving this mess.  It is his turn to walk into the sunlight and to be free and unrestrained and to be able to tell whatever story he chooses.  And if they tell their truth, remain private, and never walk a red carpet or pose for a photo together. I am ok with that.  It is their lives and their choice.

But the fact remains, Darren suffers greatly emotionally and he will never be whole until he is able to speak publicly about who he is and who he loves.  I truly believe for him to really start on the path to recovery, something that is going to be long and hard after the nightmare he has lived, he needs to be free and unrestrained. And the only way he will truly be free is by revealing the truth and taking the burden from his shoulders that he has carried for far too long.  

And the only thing I care about is a happy and healthy Darren.

The moment of truth for the new capitalism | Business

Try to forget about the coronavirus and look back. As of June 24, 2019. That day, The New York Times published a letter signed by billionaires like George Soros, Chris Hughes (one of the founders of Facebook), and many others requesting a (moderate) wealth tax. Larry Fink, the director of BlackRock and theoretically the most powerful man on the market, has been talking for two years that corporations should think not only of shareholders, but of “employees, customers and the communities where they operate.” Thousands of companies, also the Spanish ones, have been since then repeating that achieving shareholder value is not their only objective. Well, the moment of truth has arrived. Will the response to this crisis be different from that of 2008? Will the companies, within their scope of action, remember these “interest groups”?

Of course, the shareholders have thought. This month, with the health alarm raised, listed companies have continued to pay dividends and have accelerated the purchase of shares for treasury stock, taking advantage of the stock market collapse with a dual objective: to obtain significant discounts on their own securities so that, when the market recovers, they can placing them at higher prices and obtaining capital gains, and, secondly, preventing shareholders from being so badly affected by the collapse, although the latter is practically impossible under the circumstances. The exception was made by Inditex on Wednesday, when it decided for the first time in its history that it would freeze that payment until the situation begins to normalize.

On the employment side, the reaction has also been immediate. Although the exact data will not be known until the March figures are published, many companies have begun to terminate temporary contracts. A minority, the one that cannot facilitate teleworking to its employees and has to stop the activity, has chosen to send their staff on vacation, but this was not the norm at all. Only the measures announced by the government on Tuesday have helped contain a safe bleeding of ERE by encouraging flexibility mechanisms, such as the ERTE, which prevent layoffs. When these lines are published, tens of thousands of temporary job suspension applications will have been counted throughout the territory. The slogan has been to cut fixed spending immediately, even though the forecasts said that the stoppage of activity was going to be only two weeks.

In this health and social debacle, the companies' strategic plans have also been changing on the go. The third thing that has happened is a wave of profit warning (warning of cutbacks in forecasts) that has traveled the Stock Exchanges. Apple, Microsoft, Danone, Mastercad, Barclays, BMW … Catering companies suffer like never before. French group Sodexo, one of the largest in the world, warned on Tuesday that the virus may cost 2 billion in sales and left its forecasts for this year in the air. Also textiles. The owner of Primark, Associated British Foods, predicts a gigantic drop in sales after having closed 20% of its commercial space (all stores in Italy, France, Spain and other countries), according to The Guardian. The announcements have happened in Spain. Caixabank, Inditex, Meliá, Merlin Properties, Amper, Adolfo Domínguez … The list is as long as the lines in supermarkets, and the problems described are similar. What differs from one and other companies is optimism.

Caixabank spoke on Wednesday that it will be a “short and severe” recession. The famous V: a precipitous drop in activity and an equally rapid recovery. A day earlier, BlackRock analysts said that, although market movements may recall 2008, this will not be a repeat: “Strict policies of containment and social distancing will lead to the activity falling almost to a standstill, but if aggressive fiscal and monetary policy measures are taken to save businesses and households, the activity should return quickly with little permanent economic damage. Some companies only talk about having delays, but not significant, that will drop their billing and that while the borders are not closed to the transit of goods, everything is relatively controlled.

Change of actitud

In any case, the consulted economists and experts believe that without a change of attitude of the whole society (and fast) the recession will be dramatic. But a strong public sector that supports policies to prevent workers from ending up unemployed, something that seems left-wing, is not, is of all political colors. It cannot be that large multinationals are not paying the taxes they owe. ” Vernis talks about the economy marveled in the past by startups, who are going to be naked when the tide goes out. “The Glovo, Uber, Airbnb … don't make any sense. They are going to be the flower of a day ”. Enrique González, professor of Economics at Icade, insists that the model of earning money without taking into account the rest can have its days numbered. “The system itself is questioned … It is not acceptable that companies take advantage of the circumstances. They must be careful because in today's times mistakes have a great cost. The short-term vision that can favor the shareholder or the executive is bread for today and hunger for tomorrow. The shareholder should not be left unprotected, but neither should the other people involved ”.

There will be companies willing to use retained benefits to pay wages and not kick anyone out, Pascual Berrone estimates, and others who will not. “Making an analogy with the disease, that would be like acetaminophen. Then, depending on how long it lasts, there will be a need for respirators and there will be situations where many companies will really disappear. That is why it is so necessary for policies to be coordinated. ”

From Forética, its director of corporate development, Jaime Silos, recalls that in this global market crash, the most sustainable companies in Europe “have fallen 5% less than their benchmarks.” You may be right, but recent examples of anti-competitive practices, from the Volkswagen emissions scandal to the closest cases of corruption and irregularities in Spanish companies, have not been widely criticized by consumers or shareholders.

Will it be different now? Ramón Pueyo, partner responsible for sustainability and good governance at KPMG, does believe that “society has a memory” and that he will remember those companies that have lent their shoulders. “We live in a moment that is unmatched, it is as if economic activity crashed into a wall. There will be cases of corporate patriotism, just as it happened after the crash of 1929 or after World War II ”.

Without going so far back, Gayle Allard, professor of Economics at IE University, remembers that 2008 was a great opportunity to learn. Cross your fingers so that Spain does not waste it. “If we really care about corporate social responsibility (CSR), we must defend the worker. If people are not fired, with measures to work fewer hours and earn less but being on staff, when this ends, companies will continue to have experienced workers and they will also have some loyalty to companies. ” The same asks for the self-employed. “You have to do the same as Germany.”

Black Walnut Tincture for Worming Chickens and Livestock

This past week I wormed my chicken flock with black walnut tincture. Here’s why. A few days before I saw what was undoubtedly a round worm in a fresh chicken dropping. Since there was no mistaking what I was looking at, I knew I was going to have to treat the flock. But, I was unsure how I wanted to go about this. We try to do everything as naturally as possible on our farm.

I have never subscribed to the practice of treating for things unless I have reason to believe an animal is sick, or is showing symptoms. Seeing the worm alarmed me because I realized that more than one chicken was probably carrying worms. I didn’t want to use a product that required a lengthy egg withdrawal time. What would that product be doing to the chickens? I searched for alternative methods and came upon black walnut tincture for worming chickens.

This was not a new idea to me, but I had not used it for chickens before. I had plenty of tincture made up because I used it to treat our larger livestock.  We have plenty of black walnut trees on our property and I use the raw nuts to make a rich, brown dye for yarn. Making the tincture is another way to make use of the nuts. Black walnut tincture for worming chickens seemed like the best course of action.  If it didn’t work, I could still resort to using the store products. Intestinal worms in chickens are not transmittable to humans.

Symptoms of Worms in Chickens

If you don’t actually see the roundworms in the feces, how would you know your chicken is dealing with intestinal tract worms? A pale comb, lethargy, weakness, and diarrhea are some common signals that a worm problem might exist. In many cases, it’s not a matter of does your chicken have worms. Worms are in the environment, and insects are often an intermediate host for the larvae. The problem begins when the worm load builds to a level that causes illness. Stress can be a precursor to a worm overload. So, even though I saw a worm in the feces, clear as day, it doesn’t mean my chickens were sick. In fact, I was surprised to see the worm. Never the less, I didn’t want to let the issue become a problem. I had never wormed my flock for roundworms before, but now I would.  

Symptoms of Worms in Livestock

Livestock can exhibit diarrhea, anemia, rough unkempt coat, weight loss and sudden death. With barber pole worm, Haemonchus contortus, a condition called bottle jaw, or swelling of the lower jaw is seen. Worms can cause dehydration and weakness too.  

Being aware of the signs and symptoms of worm infestation is necessary when raising livestock. 

Natural or Not? 

Making the decision on whether or not to use a natural remedy, for your farm animals, is a personal choice. Although I prefer to stay with natural cures, there are times when it’s in the best interest of your animal to use a medication. If an animal or bird is already sickly from a parasite infestation, you may not be able to save it with natural means. This is not something I feel is cut and dry. You need to make a decision based on what you observe. Often, when a person brings home new animals they don’t realize that worms are the cause of the animal not thriving. When the diagnosis is made, it is often too late. 

Using Natural Remedies – Good Idea or Bad?

Also, not all natural remedies will be effective against all types of infestation. Some natural substances will make the gut less hospitable to parasites. But if an overload of parasites is already present, it may not do the trick at all. Proceed with caution and use close management of the animal during recovery. Seek a veterinarian’s advice and get fecal samples tested sooner rather than later. It might be too late, if you wait.

There are products on the market and available at farm supply stores that people have used for many years. Even though I prefer to keep things natural, I will not tell you that you shouldn’t use them. I will tell you to read the label precautions carefully, and follow the instructions for dosing. With over the counter medications for worming chickens, the eggs will have to be thrown away for at least 17 days after treatment begins. This is called the withdrawal time. The medication given to the chickens in their drinking water is known to travel to the eggs. The medication is not deemed safe for human use. This is one reason I prefer to use a natural remedy and natural preventatives.

when using commercial medications for your hens, be sure to read the egg withdrawal time. Not all medications are safe for humans.

Products you might find on the shelf at your farm supply store are Wazzine, Corid and Ivermectin. The active ingredient in Wazzine is piperazine. Other active ingredients in worming medications for tapeworms would be levamisole or fenbendazole (Safe-Guard). For Coccidiosis, Amprolium is often used, and is commonly found under the trade name, Corid.

Dosage and Treatment

Do your research and read the package directions carefully. The species you are treating and the weight of the animal are two considerations that are relevant to dosing. When a poultry flock is being treated for intestinal parasites the common recommendation is to treat two times per year. 

Usually the suggested time frame for treating to control worms is spring and fall. However, the recommendations also state to avoid treating while the birds are stressed. The medication itself can be stress inducing. Instead of fall, when chickens are typically molting, I would do a mid summer application of the medication. This way the chicken isn’t dealing with a medication and molt at the same time. If it seems complicated, it’s because a good bit of management has to be used when treating or preventing parasites. 

You can see from the above information that it would be very important to know what parasite overload you are treating before administering a commercial wormer to your flock or livestock. If you cannot make a certain diagnosis based on symptoms, you may be better off having a fecal test run by a veterinarian before treatment begins. 

The best case scenario is getting your herds and flocks healthy, and then, through natural methods, keep them healthy. Good management includes regular coop cleaning for poultry and a pasture rotation plan for ruminants.

Going With Natural Treatments Such as Black Walnut Tincture

Many people prefer to treat parasitic worms using a natural anthelmintic like black walnut tincture. If you start your chickens and livestock on natural preventatives early, you may be able to avoid using a commercial medications. 

When you use a natural worming method such as black walnut tincture for worming chickens, there is no egg withdrawal time. Black walnut tincture is an anthelmintic. This compound helps the body expel worms. Humans can also use black walnut tincture to rid the body of parasitic worms. There is some discussion of commercial worming medications leading to resistant strains of parasites. Black walnut tincture will not cause resistant strains of parasites. It works by making the intestinal tract of the bird or animal, inhospitable to parasites. Other natural methods often tried include pumpkin seeds and raw pumpkin and garlic, 

Making Black Walnut Tincture

If you have a black walnut tree nearby, you are ready to make the natural tincture. If not you can ask around to see if anyone in your area has this tree. Most of the time people are happy to part with the large round walnuts. They are encased in a green hull. The squirrels love to hoard these for winter eating. The nut meat from a black walnut is harder to extract than the more common English walnut. Tactics such as running over the nuts with a car are often heard when discussing this practice! If you can’t find the black walnuts locally, some sellers offer small amounts via mail order. I sell small priority boxes full via my Etsy shop, when available.

In addition to being a natural anthelmintic, black walnut tincture is an astringent, aids digestion and can lower blood pressure. (Please do your own research as I am not a trained herbalist or medical doctor.)

Recipe

Gather 10 to 12 ripe, green black walnuts 

1 quart of vodka, (preferably over 50 proof)

1 quart jar with a lid  (I like these plastic lids for making herbal tinctures in mason jars)

smaller brown bottles or other bottles to store the tincture later. Don’t forget to label!

Working with black walnuts will stain your hands and clothing so wear gloves and protect your clothing and work surface. Break off the outer hull. If the nuts are fresh it won’t take much pressure to break open the hull. Lightly tap with a hammer if needed. 

Place the hulls in the quart jar. Pour vodka into the jar until nearly full. You do want to leave some room to gently shake the mixture every day or so.

After 6 to 8 weeks the tincture is ready to strain and bottle. Squeeze or press as much of the tincture out of the hulls as possible. Remember to wear gloves to protect your hands from stains. Discard the hulls in the trash. Adding these to compost isn’t recommended. The juglans contained in black walnut can be a growth inhibitor and that is not something you want to add to your compost.

Label and date the bottles of black walnut tincture. It will last for years. 

Dosing Chickens with Black Walnut Tincture

I used 2 cc per gallon of water each day. Dose was repeated for five days in a row, then waited 2 weeks and repeated the dose for another 5 days.  I did not see any further worms in my chicken’s droppings but I am being watchful. 

Since my water buckets for the sheep and goats are bigger than the chicken water bowls, I used two teaspoons of tincture per 5 gallons of water. Same repeat as above.
