On September 10th we venerate Elevated Ancestor, Voodoo Queen of Louisiana, & Saint, Marie Catherine Laveau on her 222nd birthday 🎉
[for our Hoodoos of the Vodou Pantheon]
Tumblr media
Marie Catherine Laveau was a dedicated Hoodoo, healer, herbalist, & midwife who, "traveled the streets [of New Orleans] like she owned them", as the most infamous Voodoo Queen of New Orleans.
Marie C. Laveau I was born a "Free Mulatto" in today's French Quarter in what was then, New France); to a mother & grandmother who were both born into slavery & later freed via freedom papers. It is believed that she grew up in the St. Ann Street cottage of her maternal grandmother.
She married Jacques Santiago-Paris, a "Quadroon" "Free Man of Color", who fled as a refugee from Saint-Domingue, Haiti from the Haitian Revolution in the former French colony . After his passing, she became known as "The Widow Paris". She then worked as a hairdresser catering to White families & later entered a domestic partnership with a French nobleman his death. She excelled at obtaining inside information on her wealthy patrons by instilling fear in their servants whom she either paid or cured of mysterious ailments. Although she never abandoned her Catholic roots, she became increasingly interested in her mother’s African traditional beliefs. The Widow Paris learned her craft from a ‘Voodoo doctor’ known variously as Doctor John or John Bayou.
Marie C. Laveau I is said to have intiated into Voodoo career sometime in the 1820s. She's believed to be descended from a long line of Voodoo Priestesses, all bearing her same name. She was also a lifelong devout Catholic. It didn’t take long before Marie C. Laveau I dominated New Orleans Voodoo culture & society before claiming title of Queen. She was the 3rd Voodoo Queen of NOLA - after Queen Sanité Dédé & Queen Marie Salopé. During her decades tenure, she was the premier beacon of hope and service to customers seeking private consultations - to aid in matters such as family disputes, health, finances, etc, created/sold gris gris, perforemed exorcisms. While her daughter Marie II was known for her more theatrical displays of public events, Marie C. Laveau I was less flamboyant in her persona. She conducted her work in 3 primary locations throughout the city: her home on St. Ann Street, Congo Square, & at Lake Pontchartrain. Despite one account of a challenge to her authority in 1850, Marie C. Laveau I maintained her leadership & influence.
The Queen died peacefully in her sleep in her ole cottage home on St. Ann Street. Her funeral was conducted according to the rite of the Catholic Church & in the absence of any Voodoo rites. To her Voodoo followers, she's venerated as a Folk Saint. In² addition to her Priesthood in Voodoo and title of Queen, she is also remembered for her community activism; visiting prisoners, providing lessons to women of the community, & doing ritual work for those in need.
She is generally believed to have been buried in plot 347, the Glapion family crypt in Saint Louis Cemetery No. 1, New Orleans. As of March 1st, 2015, there is no longer public access to St. Louis Cemetery No. 1. Entry with a tour guide is required due to continued vandalism & tomb raiding.
We pour libations & give her💐 today as we celebrate her for her love for & service to the people, through poverty, misfortune, bondage, & beyond.
Offering suggestions: flowers + libations at her grave, catholic hymns, holy water, gold rings/bracelets, money
‼️Note: offering suggestions are just that & strictly for veneration purposes only. Never attempt to conjure up any spirit or entity without proper divination/Mediumship counsel.‼️

We as a society have failed by not giving the dinner scene with Taylor the acknowledgment it deserves in the buddie moments hall of fame and I will now explain why. With 9-1-1, the golden rule is always to view the episodes' themes through the lens of the episode titles - almost every scene, call, and interaction can be traced to some interpretation of the episode title. With 511, it's clear that as the A plot of the episode, Eddie is the outsider looking in and this is also shown in the latter half of the dinner scene with him telling Buck to move on (now that I think about it, they're both outsiders in that scene. Eddie is alienating himself from the 118. Buck is being alienated from Eddie.) But in the first half of the dinner scene, with Taylor, Buck, Eddie, and Christopher around the table, Eddie is clearly not the outsider, Taylor is. What's more, being the outsider is her only role in that scene.
Food has always been a primary love language in 9-1-1, and, this scene being the first time we see Eddie cook a meal, it's clear that the choice to have Buck and Christopher eating it is just another way to highlight the family dynamics that exist between them, a family that is separate from the found family of the 118. Including Taylor in the scene could have been a way to symbolize her integration into the most intimate parts of Buck's life - Buck, Eddie, and Christopher are a package deal and Taylor being a part of that dynamic would narratively show her as on the same level as them (something to point out here - if this was any other show/ship, some would read this the other way around. Taylor is his girlfriend so it would be more significant to Eddie and Christopher's place in Buck's life to show them on the same level as Taylor. But this is 9-1-1 - the scene takes place in Eddie's house and leaves no room for doubt that Taylor is the one being allowed access.) But instead, the deliberate narrative choice was made to make Buck be the one to exclude her from the symbolism of the food. He tells her to eat before coming, presumably as a favor to her so she wouldn't go hungry, and because of this she's left awkwardly swirling her fork on her plate while everyone else digs in.
Which brings me to the main point of why I made this post and the most important most insane most brain-rotting part of this scene: Buck himself didn't eat before coming. He fully expected Eddie's food to taste like garbage and he still went in there and filled up his plate to the brim. He probably heard Eddie's excitement about finally learning how to cook and making an edible meal and steeled himself to shove every last spoonful down his gullet no matter the cost because Eddie wanted to make a meal for him. Because, and I cannot stress this enough, it's not about the food. It's about the act of making the food, making all that effort so your loved ones will eat well. It's about receiving the food and showing your appreciation for the labor of love that went into it. It's about taking care of someone and being taken care of, both of which require a vulnerability that hides nothing. And when that time came, Eddie sat there with a satisfied smile watching his boys eat and tease him, and Buck and Christopher were giddy with their enjoyment of the food and the chance to tease Eddie together. And Taylor sat there awkwardly making dessert jokes.
(the most important thing about the above post is that I came up with none of it and it all came from the beautiful brain of @colonoscopys, who peer-pressured me into making this post instead of her via my innate and all-encompassing desire to give her everything she wants)

Tell me your thoughts about gameplay and story integration in video games :3
(THANKS ILY TOO!)
Video games are a super interesting medium because it's all about leveraging player behavior and choice. A lot of game design fundamentals are about giving the player freedom, or the illusion of freedom. The game maker sets the rules, and the player organically develops behaviors and strategies within those rules. If you want the player to act a certain way, you have to encourage them to act in that way. (Watch one of the bazillion analysis videos on Super Mario Bros. World 1-1 sometime.)
In games there are ways to punish a player (death, losing progress, jumpscares, etc) and there are ways to reward a player (score go up, unlock new thing, get more power, etc). Story can be part of that, and it can go beyond "play well = good end, play poorly = bad end."
I think, if you're going to use a video game to tell your story, you should really take advantage of it, you know? Flex the medium. Leverage the inherent immersion that comes with the player Interacting With The Game. Inscryption and Undertale are So Video Game that you can't adapt it to a different medium without significant rework. They are video games because they have to be video games. That doesn't make them automatically good, but a good storyteller would choose the medium that works best with their story and that confidence just oozes out, in a good way.
You don't even have to get all 4th wall meta with your video game plot. In Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the main Gimmick is that you have a time-traveling dagger. You can use it to make combat sequences easier, you can use it to solve puzzles, but it's also integral to the entire experience. The time travel sets up the framed narrative, which pays homage to the literature that serves as the game's inspiration. The central conflict is resolved with the time travel mechanic. In gameplay, you make mistakes, experience consequences in battle, learn and do things correctly the next time around, which is the Prince's entire character arc. Even basic game mechanics are part of the story -- when you save, you get "tips and tricks!" in the form of visions that will help you solve puzzles, but some of those visions are plot-relevant. The menu itself has flavor dialogue that is part of the narrative frame and is also hilarious.
Some other examples: Papers, Please! explores bureaucracy as a tool of dehumanization under authoritarian governements, and the gameplay is all fine print and form-filling and menus. In GOW 2018, there are enemies that have elemental weaknesses, so you end up having to switch weapons. (This is a really common thing to do: new area w/ new enemies requires new weapon.) You unlock the Blades of Chaos so that you can enter Helheim. The Blades also have a backstory, and using them means something in Kratos's character arc, it's a whole Thing. In metroidvanias, you unlock new abilities so you can access new parts of the story and find things you missed the first time around -- really good for worldbuilding and creating a sense of depth to a location (the world of Blasphemous comes to mind). Majora's Mask gives you anxiety.
A buddy once asked if I thought a good plot could carry a crappy game, and my answer is no. You can't absorb the story if the primary mode of interacting with the story is unplayable. If the gameplay is detracting from the story, then you should make a movie or write a novel. Video games are experiences: gameplay should serve story, story should serve gameplay. *Tetris: Effect Voice* it's all connected!
I just enjoy it when stories are told in mediums that suit them best. It's satisfying! It's fun! Makes my brain go :D

I feel slightly greedy prompting three weeks in a row, but I just read the new chapter of Elysium's Tears that you uploaded to a03 and it is utterly incredible. To put it lightly.
If this plot bunny inspires you at all, I would absolutely adore the chance to read a snippet in that universe of Ragnor and/or Cat seeing Malec together for the first time - just the sheer craziness of them seeing a nephilim, one of the Clave's most valued treasures, not to mention the whole Lightwood thing, happily collared and kneeling at their best friend's feet, casually informing Magnus of secrets the Clave would straight-up murder to keep while just ... nibbling mango from his fingers.
(That was a very long run-on sentence, apologies. Also, I was mostly just going for vibes not specific plot points in that promptlet. Also, again, three weeks in a row so feel free to ignore ❤️)
hey Laws, feel free to prompt every week and you know i love vibes! this was a lot of fun and definitely is going in the next chapter of elysium's tears though i'll probably need a magnus redecorating his loft scene at some point lol. this is cat's pov because it was more fun that way! i hope you enjoy it! thank you for prompting

It’s been nearly three weeks since Magnus all but dropped off the face of the world.  Normally, Cat wouldn’t be so concerned if it weren’t for the fact that he’s been asking for her help securing an absurdly long list of rare potion ingredients.
It’s with a case of beer and a box of snacks that she portals over to his place, only to be gently redirected by the interior wards.
The primary wards still allow her access, but she’s portaled into what Magnus was once planning to use as a greeting hall. She wonders just what spell, potion or sex experiments Magnus is conducting that require such an elaborate and delicate array.
It’s with growing amusement that she taps her foot and counts out just how long it’s taking Magnus to respond. The amusement turns to concern when she feels Magnus’ magic reach out with intent, demanding she prove her identity to him in a way he rarely feels the need to use.
It’s without a second thought that Cat reaches back, letting Magnus weigh her soul against his knowledge of her and his magic presses against her, almost in relief.
“Cat—” Magnus murmurs and his voice is hoarse and he looks tired and worn but smug.
Magnus looks victorious, in a way Cat has never seen before.
“You’re okay?” She asks, because that will always be the first and most important question. Anything else can alway wait.
“Oh Cat, I’ve never been better.”
The amount of layers and traps that she has to step through is intense and Cat resolves to make Magnus visit her until he’s finished with whatever he’s doing.
“Alexander is resting at the moment—” Magnus is murmuring though he’s quite forgotten to explain just who Alexander is. It could be anything from a weekend frolic to a new snake or a stray cat that Magnus has gotten attacked to.
“And Alexander is?” Cat asks leadingly but it goes nowhere because Magnus just barks a laugh, a sharp, dark noise of pure avarice.
“He’s mine Cat, in a way I didn’t think could ever be possible.”
Magnus opens the wards and finally lets her through the last step and Cat walks in and stares. Magnus’ entire loft looks different, a fortress on the outside and an oasis of luxury on the inside. There are chaises and sofas and thick rugs with plush cushions and throws. It looks decadent and soft in a way Cat doesn’t normally associate with Magnus.
On one of the thick rugs, shirtless and dappled in lurid bruises and golden sunlight, a young nephilm lays sleeping. He’s aesthetically pleasing and is defined in a way that says he is heavily trained and very capable.
Cat waits for a moment, trying to understand how three weeks could possibly have turned into something like this and then she sees the nephilim wake up. Unfairly long lashes flutter and Cat sees a glimpse of icy blue, and then she sees it.
Lines upon lines of hoarfrost blue, the silver of an angelic power Cat only barely managed to witness and she understands exactly why Magnus’ lair is warded so thoroughly.
“How did you get him here?” Cat finds herself asking because it’s one thing for Magnus to try and lure in a nephilim curse with Elysium’s Tears. Magnus would think nothing of seducing such a person, not if it would give him a glimpse of something to look forward to.  It’s the layout, the way Magnus is covetously watching his Alexander’s every breath.
Something else is going on beyond a glimpse of what could be.
Magnus walks over and kneels, reaching down to kiss Alexander’s sleeping for, biting his lip until the bluelight fade and he groggily nuzzles into Magnus’ chest.
“Lovely, I’d like someone to check you over. Hmm, sweetheart?”
Magnus’ voice is soothing and sincere and tinted with a jagged edge of possessiveness.
“Oh—” hazel eyes blink at her, awareness growing. “Cat, then? It’s early to meet her. This isn’t normally one of her days off.”
It sends a chill up Cat’s spine to hear such a remark, especially when the only reason she’s free is because she used magic to get the day off.
BEcause she wanted to check on Magnus.
“All the better, Alexander. A fresh start for you, another difference to what you saw.”
Cat finds nothing truly wrong with him, besides the fact that whatever horror resides in his body and eats away at the future is a ravenous beast.
“He needs to eat more.” Cat murmurs, low because Magnus’ Alexander only stayed awake long enough for Cat to finish her work and now he stretched out across Magnus’ lap. His long legs thrown over the sofa arm and his face burrowed into Magnus’ stomach.
“Alexander does have a habit to miss meals when he dreams.”
Magnus gives her a pointed look and Cat knows exactly what he means. Then he rubs his hands through curls and tugs on them until he’s being pouted up at.
“A snack, Alexander.” Magnus croons, like he’s taming and rewarding some fierce, snappish beast. “Try, for me.”
His boy is exhausted, from the dreams or whatever left the bruises across his body Cat doesn’t know. She does watch, surprised as Magnus summons a bowl of frozen mango. His boy whines at the cold, unable to bite into it and insstead he licks and suckles from Magnus’ fingers. It takes him and agonizing amount of time each piece and his lips and swollen from the cold and from the way he’s making obscene, slick noises, his tongue must be numb as well.
Magnus doesn’t seem to notice how amorous their actions are. All of his focus is on his Alexander, feeding him each piece in such a cruelly intimate manner. It takes forever, the sun stretching high and falling low and then Magnus’ boy falls back asleep, suckling the juice from Magnus’ fingers. Magnus chuckles, something dark and ravenous as he presses his fingers even deeper into his boy’s slack, trusting mouth.
“He’s so good for me—” Magnus is murmuring, almost as if besotted and enchanted and there’s something feral in his tone. “He brought me information that has me, for the first time, ahead of my father.”
The shock of it hits Cat like a glacier pool and she copartmentalizes quickly, locking it away as she tries to focus on Magnus.
“So you’re
“I have all of my magic back again.” Magnus bares his teeth in a snarled grin, “ those pieces I sacrificed to hold him in Edom, it’s all been returned to me. We struck a deal, rather than have my strength be tamed by chaining him.
“Incredibly.” Cat finds herself saying, “I’ll let Ragnor know. You’ll tell us, when you’re ready?”
Magnus nods and leads her back to the entry hall and then he pauses and as she’s about to step through her own portal he interrupts the silence.
“I didn’t find him, Cat.” Magnus lets out a sigh, wonder in the hoarse edge of his breath. “He came to me. Surrendered himself to me and let me stop him from leaving, let me keep him and bind him and he adores me for it. Would worship me in gratitude because he knows I will never let him go.”
Cat nods.
This is all they’ll need to speak of, for now.  She’ll check on Magnus on and off, check on his boy as well, but in the meantime she’ll let Magnus lay his webs and string his boy up and so tightly bound that he can’t even blink without Magnus knowing.
After all, it’s what makes Magnus happy.

ARE YOU AN ASPIRING ACTOR AND INTERESTED IN HORROR? IF SO, PLEASE READ:
Hey all!! I'm Tim, the creator of the in progress Slenderverse series Anniversary Log. Anniversary Log is a free volunteer project my crew and I are creating for fun. It takes place in the Slenderman Universe and follows protagonist Sam Moreno's search for his missing girlfriend Emilia Hall.
I wanted to tell yall that auditions are open again. Now that my break is over, (I was going through some self doubt and missing motivation for my project and made a brash decision to drastically change it which has now been revoked) we'll be resuming the auditions for Marina Collie (koh-lee) and James Haddonfield!! If you're interested, here are the requirements below:
-must be 18 or older
-follow our YouTube channel
-must be okay with showing your face/using images + videos of yourself (basically like you would be a real actor)
-must have a flexible schedule (or at least be free weekends)
(Your information will not be shared with anybody, but your full name will appear in the credits)
This role is not local!! Any footage we will need of Marina or James will not have them interacting one on one with the main characters. They will be interacting only over phone calls and maybe (emphasis on maybe) over video call. We will also need to use pictures of you (your best ones!!) to use to create convincing social media posts and other intriguing things my crew and I have in mind for the series!!
AUDITION PROCESS:
Once you sign up (with the link I will provide on this post) you will receive your audition script once I have completed it. This will give you a few days (up to a week) to memorize your lines (if you would like) and practice by yourself and with the others in our Discord (pm me for the Discord invite or I will send you an email with the link when you sign up)
From there we will begin PRIMARY AUDITIONS where you and the others on the Discord will wait in the waiting room while the casting directors (myself, Emilia and Sam) are on the call. Once we call you in, you will perform with either Sam or Emilia (depending on which role you're going out for) and once you finish you may leave or stick around to offer the rest of the auditioners support!!
It will take a couple of days for us to release the CALLBACK LIST, but you will either receive an email with the new script linked or an email with a polite let down explaining other roles you have an opportunity for or crew member positions.
Callbacks are usually held no later than a week after primary auditions.
Callbacks work just the same as the primaries. The role is usually announced right after the performances, but if we can't decide it may take up to a day or two after.
BEING AN ACTOR IN OUR SERIES
Marina and James are minor characters in our series, so you will appear occasionally in a few entries as well as referenced in others. (Whether that be your character name is mentioned or you're shown in a picture). You will have opportunities to work one on one with our acting coaches (me as well as a few others) as well as have the opportunity to join the BTS Anniversary Log Discord chat as a CAST MEMBER. This is where all crew discussion as well as plot explanations, costuming choices, props and etc are kept. You will also be able to have VIP access to the script writing processes as well as the editing processes.
If you receive the role, you will be shouted out on our social medias (here and Twitter) as well as thanked and listed in the series' credits. If you could also support us by posting about the project and spreading awareness so we can grow our audience (regardless if you're casted) that would be wonderful!! (But ofc making sure you keep all the plot and scripts and things a secret 🤫)
If you choose to audition, you have the chance to meet a bunch of other auditioners (some from previous auditions) and learn more about the process. (I promise this isn't a scam, we have held auditions before :)))
Thank you so much !! (Links are below)

Looms!
Looms - love 'em, hate 'em, neutral on the subject, everyone seems to have an opinion on looms. So I thought I'd write down my own thoughts and headcanons on the subject:
For me, looms are totally a thing - I find it makes Time Lord society more interesting and more alien, more removed from humans. I also think if those very conservative gasp how scandalous they showed a kneecap guys could, they would totally eliminate the requirement for physical reproduction. I don't think they have lost the ability to reproduce, just that its seen as very strange, and odd, and lesser. Why would you do that? Also could lead to more looking down on species that do reproduce without technology as lesser, which is very on brand for those guys. It would also cause a stronger divide between the elite Time Lords and the higher class and the lower classes on Gallifrey, who don't have access to such tech. Hence, time lords tooting their own horn about yet another thing.I feel that it really works with some plot points.
For example, with Pandora, I think it really works with her genetically manipulating Romana's bloodline. Especially if you see looming as something that includes genetic modification, or a process linked to the matrix, which of course with her and her access... Also with the idea of the Timeless Child, I think that looming would really work as a way to avoid having to explain where this new child has come from. If natural reproduction with birth was a thing, having to explain the existence of a new child after no pregnancy or whatever could be a bit complicated. Not great for such a secretive secret. But with looms - all neat and tidy, no explanation to why you've shown up to the house one day with a new kid. Depending on whether you believe the Doctor's parents knew about this, they might not even have to know. Put in your loom application, put in the DNA and genetic modifications necessary, come back to pick up your new kid! With an organisation with as much influence and control as Division, would it be so hard to pretend this baby is the parents' new loomling?
Additionally, if reproduction like humans was the case - how would regeneration and pregnancy work? If the carrier, the biological mother regenerated, would the baby die? Survive? Or would they regenerate too, if you're someone that believes Time Lords are born able to regenerate, and don't gain it at a later date, such as at the Schism or graduation. And what if the parent changed to male?
And now on to my headcanons:
Children on Gallifrey come out as babies, I'm not a fan of the arrive as adults thing personally
A child can have the genetic input of more than two individuals, but two core individuals would commonly act as the main base. Those two would be treated as the "parents" and other, possibly unrelated individuals would be seen kinda like aunts and uncles? to the child. but its hard to equate stuff to human familial relationships
All of these individuals, however, would be seen as grandparents (again, just a human-relative term that doesn't fully equate) to any (of course, loomed) children of the child. This means that the Doctor may have been seen as a parent, or primary caretaker for Susan's parent, but may not have done. This also is why the Thirteenth Doctor has I think she mentioned having seven grandmothers? In It Takes You Away.

Fuck it! The entire plot of the Ancestors AU I made. Because it's very much discontinued forever.
The world of the Ancestor's AU was created long ago by gods, that kinda created each other. Basically at first there was nothing, then a concept of existence itself has been born and was split into four concepts known as "Time", "Space", "Life" and "Death". These four concepts grew and at one point gained courteousness with the understanding that they can create anything. And they did. They are four primary gods from which every other concept was born: "Sun", "Moon", "Constellation", "Sky", "Earth", "Blood", "Light" and "Shadow". Time, Space, Life and Death are existential concepts. Sun, Moon and Constellation are celestial concepts. Sky, Earth, Light, Shadow and Blood are earthly concepts.
With Sun, Moon, Sky and Earth also representing four elements of fire, water, air and rock respectfully.
At some point the god of Light (or Ancestor of Light in this world) created two birds from the two identical drops of light - The Bird of Joy and The Bird of Grief. Although two were identical one was singing and brought people joy and prosperity, the song of the other brought despair and knowledge of the catastrophe to come. And filled with jealousy bird of grief attacked her sister and killed her, her feathers changed colour from spilled blood from yellow to black. Distraught by her own actions, she asked Ancestor of Death to bring her sister back. The Ancestor stroke a deal with her, that both of them will be allowed to be reborn in new bodies and live. But they will always end up harming each other.
On the next day all gods (Ancestors) disappeared. For decades they protected people of the lands they created and just suddenly completely vanished like they never existed. Except that day a first person with the mark of the God was born, starting a cycle of endless reincarnation. The marked by god people will be known in the world as "Descendants of the gods". They have an access to the shadow of the gods' power, but even that is much stronger than anything that humanity was trying to recreate. (And they also live very long naturally if not stabbed) They became the ultimate weapons of their countries. And so began the Great Era of Wars.
The Great Lands and The Red Kingdom started their ruthless wars, while the Shadow Realm raised the "shadow curtain" - a barrier that requires a Descendant of the god of Shadow to maintain - around their islands, isolating the country from the wars. A lot of shit goes down actually during the Era of Wars: people die left and right, famine, people trying to killed marked people as babies or kidnap them. That's actually how Grian, who is marked by the Bird of Joy got to the Red Kingdom and Red Army - he was kinda kidnapped, which is better than being killed, to be honest.
When he grows up there Red Kingdom has 6 makrked people: Death (Schlatt), Grief (Philza), Space (Mumza), Blood (Techno's ancestor), Earth (Ren's Ancestor and a Red King of the Red dynasty) and Joy (Grian). Marked by the God of Blood is naturally strive for justice and unity and this nature brings him to leading a lot of people out of the war, running away from Red Army. And pretty much every other marked person followed him, besides Grian who willingly decided to stay behind, because the devastation for people of the Red Kingdom would be too great. And well, the Red King, who IS leading the freaking war.
At one point they traveled to the end of the land, but they still were chased by Red Army so Mumza, being a Marked by a God of Space, decides to use her powers to create a new continent for their people. However it's such a great use of her power, that it took away her body by the time the continent was finished. Schaltt attempted to bring her back, but there was no body for him to work with. The day after the New Lands were established in the Red Kingdom a new child with the mark of Space was born.
Techno's Ancestor, marked by the god of Blood, decided that they can't run away and hide, in hope that the war won't reach their people. They should stop the wars once and for all and to do that they shall kill the Red Kind and current Royal Majesty of the Great Kingdom. And they needed help.
So Philza was sent to fly to the Shadow Realm and propose a plan created by Techno's Ancestor and Schlatt. Reluctantly (took a while to convince the commissions) they agreed and The Shadow Realm joined the war.
The final battle was hell on earth, but they've done it. The wars were over. The marked by Sun, Sky, Constellation, Light, Earth and Blood died on that day. But the Era of Peace have began.
Somewhere on the timeline that happened: -Schlatt in attempt to save Cleo from his own decay, tied to revive her. But it resulted in her permanently stuck in between being dead (decaying) and alive (reanimating) and she is now in a lot of constant pain, but also probably immortal. That gave her a title of "Undead General". -Badboyhalo was born way before the wars and got stuck in the Shadow Realm during the Era of Wars. When marked by the Sun was reincarnated, he actually found him and took him in, covering up the fact that the boy - Sapnap - is actually marked. He took him away from Shadow Realm to Great Kingdom when it got finally safe. But now people deem the cycle broken for the marked by the Sun and his shrine is very empty in the Shadow realm. -Phil adopts a boy named Wilbur and tries his best at parenting. -A specific type of magic was invented the magic of Ink, which basically meant that with specific ink all symbols written on paper could have specific properties, which was good for astral charts, seals and stuff. -Scott running away to live in the forest between the Red Kingdom and Great Lands, because he is Tired and wants to live his own life, without being told what to do. - Wilbur grew up, became president of the New Lands, got a son of his own, became insane from obsession that everyone want to betray him, made Tubbo a vice president, died leaving (begged for Phil to kill him) a president's stool to Tubbo. - A bunch of marked people sealed into statues for "peace" purposes. Such as Time, Light and Death.
All the marked people:
Great Lands Dream - Sky Sapnap - Sun (isn't known) George - Constellation Bdubs - Time (got statue-d) Red Kingdom Scar - Space Grian - Bird of Joy Ren - Earth
Shadow Realm Lizzie - Shadow Pearl - Moon Foolish - Light (got statue-d) New Lands Techno - Blood Schlatt - Death (got statue-d) Phil - Bird of Grief (in the jail for killing a president) Unaligned Scott - Life (hiding in the forests)

One thing that I think is so odd about the way people talk about "fanfiction as opposed to literature" is the insistence that the act of writing fanfiction is entirely, 1:1 analogous with the act of writing literature, and there are just... a lot of reasons that isn't the case. I don't mean this derisively towards fanfic at all, but the skillset it requires is pretty substantially different from the skillset required for original fiction (which is usually what is meant by 'literature' in this context.) Ask anyone who reads enough modern (genre) fiction and they'll tell you that they can usually spot when an author was previously Mostly Into Fanfic, because the skills developed in making fanfic aren't actually the same skills you develop by making original fiction.
With fanfic, your goal is not to create a new or complete story, and ambitions are rarely 'literary' in the sense of thematic or artistic exploration: the primary purpose of fanfic is (generally, and with exceptions) to entertain, and to expound on a previously existing work. As a general rule (and, again, with exceptions) the writer isn't concerned with establishing the rules of the setting, or the basis for each character, or their cast. Instead their goal is to appeal to people who already like the source material, and also to have fun. When people who primarily write fanfic make an attempt at original fiction without reflecting on the differences between the two mediums, certain traits emerge: a lack of character descriptions (redundant in fanfic, necessary in original fiction), a large but extraneous cast (the 'Hoseok, the Bus Driver' phenomenon), and an otherwise general disinterest in actually *establishing* the setting or characters in ways that aren't immediately relevant to the plot (among other features.) These are all useful— even necessary— features when writing fanfic, but detract from original fiction. That's not to say that these traits are *exclusive* to authors mostly versed in fanfic, but they are strongly correlated.
I'm saying this mostly in response to 'well, fanfic isn't literature because most fanfic sucks' when most original fiction also fucking sucks. Sure, bad fanfiction is generally more accessible (i.e. free online) than bad original fiction, but if you read fanfic only after a vetting process of however many years of academic and popular critique, or being recommended by your friend, or even just thinking to yourself "is this worth spending $15 on?" you'd also notice the average fanfic you read is way better. If you're among those who have at any point read a large amount of original fiction that *hasn't* undergone that vetting process, you'll see, with total lack of ambiguity, that most original fiction is terrible and it's only the vetting processes that make the difference.
You can probably pretty successfully argue that many criticisms of fanfic as a medium are misogynistic (at least among Anglophones), and I would agree to an extent. Many people who go to the front lines for the Artistic Validity of Fanfiction, however, seem to completely look over what distinguishes fanfiction as a medium from original fiction, and disrespect both in the process.

Research, I hate it. But how do you do it anyways?
Research! My favorite! 😍 It’s also my IRL job… so, you’ve come to the right place. Pull up a chair.
- - - - - - - - - -
In writing, I usually do the first draft as quickly as possible and then mark out the places that need more detail. For example, if I’m writing something where the character has to use technical skills, I’ll just insert brackets. In the brackets goes this comment in pink letters, so it’s easy for me to spot during revisions: [Character fixes it in a really cool way.]
Then I move on. When I get to the second draft, I’ll go back and research and fill in the details.
Documentaries are a great resource, because it gives a visual representation of what’s being done. Since I have to describe the process when I write this is ideal. Reddit threads are really helpful for POV experience with different activities and emotions. What is it like to live with bipolar disorder? I don’t know. But someone on Reddit probably posted about it extensively. This is a fantastic place for primary source documentation of life experiences. Going out and doing something yourself, if possible, is often the best form of research. For example, if I was going to put a character in a scene that required snow shoeing, I could definitely do that in my area. (Because I don’t want to have to re-learn how to walk, and fall on my face, I haven’t done it myself. However, for the sake of a story, I’d try it.)
User manuals are a fantastic resource for learning about guns, industrial machinery, cars, and electronic devices. I don’t know how a satellite phone works, but if I want to learn, the manufacturer has a guide on their website. I can use that information to make my character look smart. If they’re following the correct procedures to fix a device, it instantly shows their knowledge and readers can draw conclusions about them based on that information.
The comment in brackets method helps me narrow down exactly what needs to be researched for the most efficient use of time. However, I often find researching a topic inspiring. It sparks new ideas and thoughts about the plot. For this purpose, I sometimes just dive in and see where the internet surfing takes me. I also keep a notebook handy for storing random ideas and thoughts that I don’t know how I’ll use, but they seem cool.
If you’re asking about medical research, I work in the medical research field, so that’s quite a bit easier for me than most people.
One good tool for trauma is the ISS scale. It’s an abbreviation for “Injury Severity Scoring.” This is how we calculate someone’s probability of survival after an injury. We can also extrapolate from that data to measure the performance of trauma centers, EMS personnel, and surgical interventions. The scale goes from 1-75 with a 75 being a fatal injury. There are guides to using this method online and descriptions of what each injury is and how they’re weighted. The ISS scale has been used since the 1960s. After decades of improvements and revisions, it’s very accurate. (If you need more details, I can show you how to use it. Or even run the numbers for you.)
Having a background in EMS (and a little SAR experience) is a great help to my writing. I’d recommend anyone who can go get a certification for first aide, basic/advanced EMT (or anything similar) that’s accessible to you.
Being able to do something during a disaster is very empowering. It will serve you well beyond your writing career. I’m sure automation and other technologies will change a lot in the future, but you can’t ask a machine to pry you out of the vehicle that you wrapped around a tree. Paramedics have great job security on that front.
Here are my final recommendations:
Documentaries
A few ideas: DW Documentaries on YouTube. They’re a very neutral perspective because they’re produced by the German state news channel. As an American, I find that they’re far enough away from our sphere of influence to make content that challenges some of my pre-conceived assumptions that come from a lack of international experience.
PBS frontline also has some interesting documentary content. ABC News in-depth is pretty good. 60 minutes Australia tends to be another great show for gathering information. Top Documentary Films is a website that offers a ton of free documentary films. Here is a link to their website.
Reddit threads
This is great for discovering how people feel and think about events that you haven’t seen or experienced yourself. There are posts from individuals in various communities with unusual life experiences and from different cultures and backgrounds. For example, I’ve not been paragliding, but I can read a play-by-play of what it feels like from some daredevil who does it every weekend. This is fantastic, because I don’t want to go paragliding. Like, at all.
Real life exposure
This is only when it’s possible. Real life experience is the best for medical exposure and physical activities.
User manuals
Read a user manual for things you don’t know about. There’s a lot of information on guns that can help you learn the proper terminology. For example, a clip is different than a magazine
You can apply this method to learn a lot about a particular weapon quickly. The Glock firearm has a website with links to their user manuals. I went to their information section and retrieved the user manual. Here’s pictures of some of their diagrams:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reviewing the manual will only give you so much information. Having real life experience shooting a Glock will help you fill in those gaps. This is why that real life experience is still very important. For example, hitting the release mechanism for the Glock’s magazine requires you to stretch your fingers around the grip of the gun, particularly if you have smaller hands. In order to hit it with enough pressure for the magazine to drop is rather difficult with shorter fingers.
User manuals will allow you to identify the specific vocabulary, and give you a clear idea of how the gun works. As a bonus, this is the best tool to learn how to break something. If you want to learn how to throw a kink in the scene for your character and cause problems, check out the user manual. They tell you a lot about vulnerabilities and issues with devices. In my opinion, user manuals tend to be the most reliable source of information for a lot of things.
I hope this helped! Message me if you need anything. I’d be glad to talk about trauma medicine if you need specific details on realistic injuries.

So, in the category of Silly and Impossible Sim Challenges, I wonder what mods, cheats, and mechanics you'd have to use to make Murderbot in Sims 2?
Murderbot is a construct of a type called a SecUnit made of cloned human tissue, extremely complex hardware, and software that integrates with both and makes the hardware look simple. Its primary function is to protect, so it has energy weapons in its arms, superstrength, superspeed, a certain amount of self-healing, and can handle multiple sensory and data inputs, utilizing scout drones and a kind of universal internet/virtual reality environment called "the feed." It can, quite literally, fight a running battle with multiple opponents, hack multiple systems, track what's going on in other locations that it has camera access to, communicate and make coherent plans with other intelligent entities over the feed or through direct verbal communication, and worry about what's going on in places outside of its sensory reach, all at the same time. A lot of its time, however, has been spent monitoring a peaceful environment for threats and hacking systems while consuming media.
It can pass as a human augmented with cyborg technology, and has altered its height and its hair production to make this easier. It also runs subroutines to mimic random human movement when it wants to pass. When it doesn't want to pass, it becomes noticeably uncanny valley.
Corporations abuse their SecUnits functions quite a bit, and install governor modules in their constructs that punish them by directly acting on neural tissue, in case they protect the "wrong thing" (like, workers instead of equipment) but after a certain horrific incident, Murderbot hacked its governor module so that it could do whatever it wanted to. It then kept doing its job, lying low and watching media, because it didn't know what else it wanted to do; only what it didn't want to do. This backstory has left Murderbot full of rage and anxiety. It is touch averse and doesn't like being looked at directly or making eye contact with people. Sometimes it has an Emotion and it wants privacy for that.
It is AAA - agender, asexual, and aromantic. It literally has no sex organs, and being used to spy on clients 24/7 has left it not only indifferent to but deeply repulsed by sex - it fast-forwards through sex scenes in media. It doesn't even like the word "relationship," yet its favorite show is a long-running soap opera, and it tracks the personal relationships of its clients closely (ostensibly for security reasons; if a married couple who treat each other and it well retreat to a room it can't monitor they're more likely to be having sex than plotting against it, while two people who hate each other may break out into violence and require intervention to prevent them from damaging each other and/or company property).
It derives operating energy from a rechargeable battery pack of remarkable productivity and longevity. It could mimic eating or drinking, but what it consumed would just sit in a lung till it could be expelled and that's gross. Most human bodily functions repel it more or less, though it isn't disgusted by seeing people eat. It doesn't sleep but occasionally goes offline during recharge cycles, mostly to avoid conversations it doesn't want to have.
The obvious thing is to make it a servo, which should deal with some of the motive-based things; but the first thing you'd need would be a servo default that looked like a humaniform sim, onto which you could add layerable CC accessories. Its bare feet are a particular problem as they are never explicitly described, but the text makes it clear that they're not remotely like human feet. However, as I understand it (I have never played a servo), servos are on the same gender binary as humaniform sims, so we'd need a lot of androgynous CC, too. Its preferred clothing styles are hoodies and loose pants with lots of pockets (for carrying drones and tools and evidence and stuff; it also has secret compartments in its torso, which we fortunately don't have to worry about because of the inventory mechanic), and it wears boots with most outfits. Oh, yeah, and it can detach extremities and still operate them like drones, which I don't think we can simulate but so far in the series it's only done this once. Another difficulty with servos is that Murderbot's core identity is SecUnit and it resents being asked to do mundane chores outside of its function, while Servos were designed and coded with the notion of a housekeeping bot in mind.
Using an editing tool to set its gender preference at -100/-100 should be sufficient for the asexual/aromantic part. Zero social points is obvious; but nice points are a problem. Murderbot is capable of extreme violence even when its rage isn't activated (its rage is usually activated) but it's never unprovoked violence. It would never walk up to a stranger and flick their nose or otherwise pick a fight. It would recoil from flirts or solicitations to dance or play, but if you did get it to play catch with you, it wouldn't throw the ball at your head - it'd be more likely to aim precisely at your hand so that it's almost impossible for you not to catch it. In a lot of ways it's high nice, but the nice gestures are entirely inappropriate to it.
Active and playful points are another puzzle. Murderbot can stand still for hours, perfectly happy, watching hour after hour of media and scanning for threats, but it can also sustain heavy mental and physical activity for similar stretches of time. It takes life very seriously but has a snarky sense of humor and an endless capacity for media consumption.
Honestly all the personality points are like that. It's scrupulously tidy but isn't down for cleaning up after anybody - that's one of the things drones and cleaning bots are for. It's cripplingly shy but you only have to look vulnerable and it will adopt you as a client and protect you with its life and then some, even if you're not very nice to it. (We only see it happen once, but it has no reason to lie when it says that multiple clients have shot it.)
Aspiration is hard. It likes winning fights and Popularity is the least sexy aspiration, but the idea of it actively wanting to make friends with people or throw parties is absurd. Fortune sims are very sexy and though Murderbot likes getting paid so it can get its own gear and doesn't have to pirate shows it's not much into money otherwise. Pleasure and Romance are right out. Family would be...technically doable but so, so weird in so, so many ways. And Knowledge...well, it's very smart indeed, and highly knowledgeable in its areas of interest, but it's also prone to using words it knows are wrong but can't be bothered to correct, and it complains about the low quality of learning modules provided by the company it was owned by until the end of the first book, but never provides itself with better ones.
It would have to have max body points and stuck smart milk syndrome, but otherwise start play pretty ignorant.
Probably you couldn't really do it satisfactorily at all, but I'm willing to hear suggestions from simmers who have read The Murderbot Diaries, or have played nonhuman sims before and know where the CC is.

Hey, curious about Wings of Fire over here? Is it YA, adult? Is it high fantasy? I’m just always looking for new reads. Oh, and who’s it by?
Tui T. Sutherland writes the Wings of Fire book series (IT'S ABOUT TALKING DRAGONS!!!!!) which is currently ongoing but is like... just about to be finished, book 15 is on the verge of release I think. It's marketed as a childrens book series for like 11+ year olds? But given the subject matter it's uhh a bit hardcore for a childrens series like I need to state that it was fucking gruesome, even for an "edgier" kids series. I counted ten named character deaths in the first book alone and there's fucking horror movie-levels of gore at times, like there's this one Icewing dragon who literally has his face melted by acid and Tui describes the eyeball melting leaving a gaping hole as this poor Icewing screams while he spasms, all the while Clay is pinned down under him awaiting certain death (the Icewing was forced to fight Clay in a gladiator ring only a few days after Clay literally went outside for the first time in his life).
The first five books are about a war of succession to determine the new queen of the Sandwing tribe of dragons except it's also like. A race war? The war has lasted 18 years so far I think and there's this prophecy to end it which requires these five "dragonets" (in-universe term for juvenile dragons) of destiny to decide on the new queen. I won't spoil what happens with the prophecy but it's fucking insane like it is so good, loads of amazing plot twists, it blows your mind.
The second five books are what result after the war ends and the five dragonets of destiny set up this school where dragonets from all over Pyrrhia can come to study and learn to be friends n shit very wholesome peacekeeper stuff. Except one of the dragonets at this school is a future-seeing, mind-reading Nightwing with no social skills who accidentally summoned a thousand-year-old giant magical immortal dragon who is a fucking psychopath intent on killing everyone and destroying everything and he cannot be stopped at all.
The third five books take place on another continent and it concerns what I would describe as uhhh basically the dragon version of organ harvesting and racial genocide. So yeah it's a very fun, wholesome story about friendship and justice and SWEET MOTHER OF THOR DID QUEEN SCARLET JUST YEET GLORY'S DECAPITATED HEAD AT PERIL HOLY SHIT WHAT THE FUCK???
So basically it's marketed in those scholastic magazines you get at primary school as a fun story for the kids but really it is a very complex, nuanced and gruesome story about war, power, corruption, allegories for racial conflict, trauma, lots of incredibly deep topics n shit. It's very progressive and intelligent and also there's queer characters :D
10/10, shaped my pre-teen years, highly recommend, in fact PLEASE read at least the first book I am begging you it is so good. Read the first one and you'll be hooked. There's also comics but I really don't like the comics at all, they remove most of the nuance and were a chore to the point where I don't think I even finished the first one and didn't read the other two. But it's nice having illustrations to access :)

are you not open to having a discord ooc? i feel like it would make it easier to interact with people within the group. i'm having a hard time plotting and connecting. just a thought!
Hi there!
So, at least from my perception, there have been some historic issues with OOC Discord channels. The primary concern I have is with the fact that since not everyone uses Discord, there will always be individuals who either feel left out, or, feel as though the Discord is compulsory.
My other issue is with the concept of moderation, which would obviously need to happen with a Discord, as there have also been historic issues with perceptions of bullying, exclusion and other problematic things happening in OOC Discords.
I'm open to whatever my membership would like to do, but at this point I am still fairly reticent to invoke something like that.
The only way I can see it truly working is if there is simply an introductions channel, so members can easily and readily access other member's discords and message them. But a free running forum would require a lot of oversight, and I don't necessarily have the bandwidth to run this group and be a forum moderator as well.

What are your pros and cons of NiD and JoD?
Tumblr media
NiD Pros:
Available on Steam and easy to play as a result (especially given that I've seen the game without a manual sell for $100! yikes!)
A-Life system adapts the music to (functionally) how much you accidentally paraloop Nightopians (the game functionally has three tracks for every stage except for Twin Seeds)
Nostalgia
Easy to learn, hard to master gameplay with the link system
Manages to tell a decently coherent story without any words entirely using cutscenes
There are actually hidden things you can find in the free roam sections and it is totally possible (though not easy) to bonk the Alarm Egg to roam more
Saturn version's debug mode turns off the Alarm Egg so you can wander around freely and just vibe (does not work on Steam, requires a Game Shark)
Completely banger soundtrack the entire game through
Pretty much the entire reason that controllers have thumbsticks now
Steam port also has Christmas NiGHTS
Trick ribbons!!!!! Make use of those shoulder buttons (warning: on a lower end pc this will lag your game to hell and back)
NiD Cons:
Completely unintuitive gameplay mechanic required to get the true ending (bonus time REQUIRED and if you don't make use of it your score suffers so much)
The English translation of the story changes and drops details and no one's ever fully translated the jpn manual (some day I will attempt to make progress on my very, very rudimentary attempts at this)
Minimalistic story can be really confusing (more of an issue for younger players who are less used to media that uses little to no spoken dialog aka me at age 7 with no idea what the hell was going on the entire time)
No explanation of gameplay you are dropped into a dreamscape and get mobbed immediately and it is just sheer confusion the whole time if you are going in blind
Steam port's seasonal features don't always work and a bunch of the features from the Christmas sampler (including Sonic Into Dreams) are missing entirely
You really do need the manual to understand a good chunk of what is going on beyond the plot that exists in the cut scenes
JoD Pros:
More accessible to new players, younger players, and people who have no idea how the original worked, or even that it existed. Infinitely more accessible to young gamers than the original
Great soundtrack (the Dream Gate theme is hands down my favorite track in the game)
Voice acting! Reala and Wizeman's put work into making their characters sound intimidating and NiGHTS voice actress exudes sass (within the occasionally clunky script)
The graphics are so good when it comes to the level design
Plot through line with relatable characters and understandable motivations for the kids
Dedicated on foot sections were a neat!
A+ boss design with my only real critiques being Girana's really confusing mustache and Reala's pink nails. Queen Bella for most effective Nightmaren design imo but that's the arachnophobia talking
Motion controls are totally optional and the thumbstick controls work great
On the Wii, which back in the day made it extremely easy for people to play due to how common the console was
Optional collectables have a cool bonus reward (aka being able to play as Claris and Elliot)
JoD Cons:
Owl (specifically his voice clip spam which gets so annoying so quickly)
I really don't enjoy the key chase missions and wish the game let you free roam outside of them more effectively
Bomamba's boss stage tilt table thing
Chamelean's unintuitive boss design
Reala's criminally underutlized in gameplay
Helen and Will not being able to put two and two together about NiGHTS and Reala being related for so long
Some extremely clunky dialog (ie "Go over and touch NiGHTS" which will be memed for all eternity by the fandom)
Character modeling and graphics are off on Owl's feathers and the kids' faces just don't look quite right in some scenes
Issues with plot and pacing (aka pretty much the primary motivating factor to my rewrite's creation in the first place)
The ambiguity of the game's timeline (aka is this a sequel, a prequel, or a soft reboot) but that's a completely personal gripe
My Dream. I LOVE the concept of it and loved playing the same levels repeatedly to try and shift the landscape but its inconsistency of what effected what got added, as well as Nightmaren drawn in by paraloops having to be manually taken out before they eat any Nightopians severely disincentivized paralooping in stages as an enemy removal tactic. That, and the stage never seemed to graduate beyond "grassy flat field" minus the occasional shallow water feature or hill
The ending's focus on the yellow Ideya just vibes so weird to me
Personas were kind of a weird inclusion that I wish the devs would have had a lot more time to utilize
Awakers are weird and I get the three count thing but the Alarm Egg was iconic. Annoying, yes, but iconic, I don't really get its removal.
Despite the wall of cons for JoD, both games are good for their own reasons!
