An example of the book's fascinating studies: as I said before, the chapter about Sleeping Beauty notices how fin-de-siècle authors, when "perverting" the tale, focused on the fairies around the baby's cradle - and Jean de Palacio notices that the names chosen for these fairies are very revealing of this "perversion".
Indeed, some authors in their twist-take on Sleeping Beauty, decided to name the group of fairies around the cradle. Anatole France, in his take on the Sleeping Beauty story in 1909, listed eight fairies: Titania, Mab, Viviane, Mélusine, Urgèle, Anna de Bretagne, Mourgue. Catulle Mendès, in 1888, had evoked in his work a total of 12 fairies - Oriane, Urgande, Urgèle, Alcine, Viviane, Holda, Mélusine, Mélandre, Arie, Mab, Titania, Habonde. Jean Lorrain did this list twice - once in 1883 including Habonde, Viviane, Tiphaine, Oriane, Mélusine, Urgèle, Morgane ; and another in 1897, simply removing Urgèle. As for Joséphin Péladan, he also did a double list: one in 1893, Mélusine, Morgane, Viviane, Mourgue, Alcine ; and another in 1895 to which he removed Mourgue to add Urgèle, Nicneven and Abonde.
These names can be taken as just random famous fairy names - but Jean de Palacio highlights that... They are not just chosen randomly, and all denote a way to discredit the fairies or to highlight their ambiguous if not negative nature. Of the recurring names four are taken from the matter of Britain, Arthurian and medieval legends: Viviane, Melusine, Anna de Bretagne (a variation of Anne of Britanny, an actual queen of France) and Mourgue/Morgane. Famous characters, right... But who is present here, around this baby's cradle to deliver gifts? Morgan le Fay, half-main villain of the Arthuriana half-healer of Avalon. Viviane, the good lady of the lake, oh yes... but also a shameless seductress who used Merlin's lust and love to steal his secrets and get rid of him. And Melusine - a national treasure, one of France's beloved legends... And a snake-woman with a strong demonic aura and devilish reputation. Viviane, Melusine and Morgan are all manifestations of the "femme fatale", of the deadly though seductive woman.
There is also a British influence at work here, since we have Titania and Mab, the two famous Shakespearian fairy queens. But Titania's reputation had already been soiled in Shakespeare's play by her mad love for a donkey - sorry, an ass ; as for Mab, in the minds of fin-de-siècle century, she is still strongly associated with the "materialistic atheism" of Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem "Queen Mab". Not perfect example of "godmothers"...
But let's return to Mourgue/Morgue briefly. Yes, she is the Franco-British Arthurian character of Morgan le Fay... But she is also part of the Italian literary tradition thanks to the Orlando Furioso, where she is Morgana, the incest-born sister of the enchantress Alcina who... Oh look! She is there too! Alcina in French is "Alcine" and in the lists you find... Alcuine. Once again, a new discredit over the fairies, as you have two wicked enchantresses dedicated to the dark art - including a lustful old hag so vain she hides her true appearance under a glamour of youth and beauty.
Of the various fairies presented in this list, only Urgèle seems to be free of any same, flaw or negative side - but that's because she is the most "recent" of them all, and not an old literary heritage or cultural figure, but rather a fresh creation. Urgèle was created by Voltaire in 1764 for a short tale/fairytale of his, "Ce qui plait aux dames", "What pleases the ladies", and immediately taken back for an "opéra-comique" adaptation by Favart in 1764, "La Fée Urgèle, ou Ce qui plaît aux dames". And while Théodore de Banville made her a good fairy victim of a wicked enchanter in his comedy "Le Baiser", "The Kiss" ; it didn't refrain Michel Carré and Paul Collin to make her the wicked fairy of Sleeping Beauty in their theatrical-opera adaptation of the fairytale in 1904...
[As a personal note, if you are interest in the other fairy names, Habonde is a variation of Abonde - la fée Abonde was a figure of popular folklore and superstitious beliefs in medieval France, an embodiment of abundance and prosperity fought off by the Church and who was tied to the rite of leaving "meals for the fairies" on special nights such as Christmas or the Epiphany. Holda is of course the same as Frau Holda/Frau Holle of Germanic mythology ; Arie is a reference to "Tante Arie", a Christmas gift-giver of eastern France, and Nicneven is a variation of Nicnevin/Nicnevan of Scottish folklore. I have to admit I do not know about the origins of Mélandre or Tiphaine.]

Would you say the Agarthans are the worst villains to come out of Fire Emblem? If you want a scathing indictment on how 3H's "moral grayness" is a misguided belief, it's really their existence in 3H and 3 Hopes.
OH YES, ABSOLUTERLY RIGHT.
They are awful.... and not in a good way. The Agarthans exist as a scapegoat, they are here just so that neither Eddie or Rhea can be presented as the main antagonist and they are just AJJHHKLKJBFRJKE
Like they are supposed to be competent villain ?! those buffons ?! Thos absolute clowns ?! They have 0 plot relevance, it is limited to little hide and seek games with the students in the academy phase where you play the Scooby gang!!!! The only important thing they did happened off screen and it's not even them who did it since they hired Nemesis to do slaughter the Nabateans !!
In AM they are so minor you kill them by acccident, in CF you only get rid of them freaking off screen, in SS and VD they are still there but for less then the quarter of the route. THEY HAVE FREAKING NUKES THAT THEY COULD HAVE BOMBED INTO RHEA AND NEVER DID IT ?!!!!! They are inexistant and GW, in AG they are there but ... AG was a mistake for what they did to Eddie and freaking SF ends with them dying like the Evil queen of Snow white !!! Eddie really can't get anything can she ?! And they do absolutely nothing and fail at everything they do in the main current story, and I am supposed to take those clows seriously when they are commically absurdely over the top EVUL ?!!! The absolute mockery !!
And their motivation are never explained ?! Why did they needed Jeralt dead ? Why the tragedey of Duscur ? Why the experiment ? Why do they want revenge of Sothis, what did she and her creation did to them for them to commit literal genocide against them ??
The game never says, it just says "yeah in buddhism Agartha is the place where the Ashura were send so symbolism hehe" THAT IS NOT HOW IT WORKS!!!!!
Example : in Engage, see Zephia ? We have her character, her motivation (she wants a kid because Sombron made her believe she would have the uncondictional twisted love she wanted from a link of blood) and only there there is the symbolism of Mélusine to support all of this, so it elevates her character to be a retelling of Mélusine in a twisted light
FOR THE AGARTHANS YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND A BUDDHIST REFERNCE TO GET THEIR MOTIVATIONS !!!
Tell me it's a joke !! And while you can use symbolism to tell a story, it doesn't work for the type of story 3H stroved to be !!!!!
But clearly you can't expect anyone to believe in "grey morality" when you have those cartoonisly evul clowns who don't even have motivations to do what they do. That's not mentionning how convoluted they make 3H's story be.
Take Eddie for example, the fact that she knew it was them who turned her and her siblings into guinea pigs ruins the whole "yeah crest system bad" cause it's not even that they deceived her into thinking it was the Chruch, no... she knew, but what on earth is the connection between the Agarthans and the Crest system when they aren't the one who established it and aren't part of it ?! They just wanted to create the ultimate weapon using what they knew of the effect of Nabateans crest and blood, how does it link with what Eddie hates (grrrrrrraaahhhhhhh)
And also how somehow Eddie needs them in 3H yes for some reason in her route she keeps helping byleth sabotaging the Agarthans plan like ???? how does that makes sense ? And why did she suddenly not need them in Hopes ???
Why did Arval saved Shez in that timeline only ???? why ???? and oh boi, Shez...ns
They are easily the worst thing FE ever commited in terms of awful villain. They make everthing worse by their existence and that's as you pointed out reinforcing the so called "grey morality" of 3H is just cowardice cause it refuse to have the player feel bad for anything

For my part, I headcanon that the Paris and Hong Kong branches's inner circle use different titles than Manhattan's chess related ones to avoid confusion between members as that would happen if they were to share an identical title. London? Alice and Wonderland themed, the Red Queen is a great opportunity to play with that. Paris? French legendary creatures like Mélusine, Tarasque, Oberon,... Hong Kong? Chinese deities like Yudi, Doumu, Hushen, ... You get the idea.
Oh dude that is so cool! I totally never thought of anything like that! That’s the one upside of canon not being fleshed out, you can make up your own ideas like this and no one can say you’re wrong!

I’m so sorry, this whole past week has been one massive mental breakdown and I have been finding it incredibly hard to do anything besides uni assignments and writing. Also, I have a lot to say about these two so I didn’t want to half-ass it.
Some Comments:
I don’t know if I told you this but this used to be my OTP, like years ago when I first got into this era and did not think/know much about Clarence and the others. But now it’s no longer the case and that’s not necessarily because it got replaced by gisabel per se but because I’ve always found it extremely hard to reconcile myself with the infidelity aspect. Even when I was more childish I felt a bit dissapointed in the fact that he didn’t appoint her (or Anthony) regent, like obviously now I understand why it was to an extent untenable politically, but back then my younger mind just saw it as ‘he trusted his brother more’, which kind of threw a wrench. So much for the ‘it’s complicated’ square. The problem with long marriages is that the delicious aspect tends to wane, and that can’t be helped in a 20 year long marriage! But obviously the 1464-1470 years taken into isolation... well... it was the epitome of delicious, sexual and romantic. You might find me pointing this out wierd given that I didn’t make the same remarks on Catherine of Valois and Owen Tudor who were also a pretty long marriage, it’s just that... in my mind they kind of stagnate age-wise even as they advance past their twenties because the whole narrative (historical and fictional) around them focuses on the first years of their union and the tribulations, whereas Edward and Elizabeth have a presence way past that as they were after all monarchs and never at one point left to live a quiet life and were no longer chronicled - so in that way they age before our eyes. And with that age you see the infidelity issue get worse, together with Edward’s greater promotion of Gloucester, his drinking, eating etc issues and it starts painting a sad image into my mind of like idk a love that at one point stopped being what it once was and could never again be - like the embers burning out? This turns the what could have been a obbsessive unhealthiness borne from passion into another caused by disillusionment? I don’t put too much stock into this, personally I feel the change in Edward was caused by other external factors and not Elizabeth herself eg Warwick and Clarence’s betrayals and deaths, the massive burden of fixing the previous administration’s mess etc. Nevertheless, Elizabeth on her own did not seem to be enough to drag him out of it and prevent some of his unhealthy habits. I do realise it’s a bit too much to ask for though.
Nevertheless, I do see them as soulmates, she seemed like one of the only people who could keep up with him in will and wit (though Jane Shore seemed quite a competitor in this regard) I’m not the type of person who thinks Edward was dominated by his lust, and I think based on that venetian letter (you know the Ziglio one XD) and the fact that it said that Edward loved her for a long time before marrying her, it was clearly a decision from the heart not the *ahem* codpiece. Also a part of the soulmate/star-crossed trope is the whole ‘they defied all odds, they withstood opposition’, and Liz and Big Ed are famously that. I would totally read fic for this but surprisingly there aren’t many! I honestly don’t know how come?? Like yes they do appear in a lot of histfics and the like, but apart from TWQ they are never the central focus, and even there we don’t get enough of them (which really irritates me). Some write me some!! I am intrigued by the pairing but extremely picky when it comes to how they are written because I have particular headcanons which I am fairly wedded to but do not expect they will be abided by. More in the pragraph below.
The Ship:
I absolutely can not stand portrayals of Elizabeth Woodville as a golddigger, much less some Marilyn Monroe type of bimbo. We know the type of beauty she had... a chronicler called her an excellent but solemn (or sthing like that) beauty where York in his letters to her for the marriage of Sir Hugh complemented her deep sorrowful look or such. She was a pious, economical woman who took her queenship extremely seriously and led a cultivated court, patronised literature and may have also written a poem herself (you know the one about Venus we spoke about). She was years older than Edward and on top of that a widow with two children of her own. I want to see that dynamic! I want to especially see how she drew Edward away from Warwick’s influences in order to put him on the path he was angling for: the statute of livery 1463 and the new sumptuary laws (that most famously restricted the length of piked shoes to 3 inches hhh) are very indicative of a king who (even before meeting her) wanted to install a strong centralised monarchy with a monopoly on violence and its laws. Not because of some rapaciousness on her part but because her and her family believed in him, experienced the exequies of war and wanted to put a stop to it. I want her to love Edward for putting an end to people like Warwick who caused all her family’s (and the gentry class as a whole) misfortunes and struggles, and in a way feel like she provided him with not only a circle of people who would help him realise this but also with a sort of family to soften the personal blow that he felt when part of his birth family betrayed him. I love the father-in-law becomes surrogate father trope (as I think you can tell) and I like to see Earl Rivers as that for him, hell you can take it even further and make Jacquetta as some sort of mother-figure for him as opposed to Cecily who apparently scorned the marriage and at that time seemed to side more heavily with George. I like to think under her influence she empowered him to act more ruthlessly in pursuit of his goal, but at the same time I think that while certain things were good in the long-term eg Clarence’s execution, (maybe Desmond’s??) they may have had a toll on the relationship later on. I headcanon Elizabeth as tragically hardened by the loss of her brother and father at Edgecoat and I think that may also have thrown a bit of a wrench into their love, given how she was faced with the violent consequences of being queen and afterwards with how Warwick and co. went free and she lost her chance of vengeance. I don’t think they were ever out of love though, especially judging by how she continued to be pregnant up to 3 years short of his death and the absolute trust he put in her. But I headcanon his attachment to Jane Shore as him seeking the light-hearted wit and lively banter that Elizabeth slowly started losing as the years went on and she became less vivacious and a tad more calculating and icy. I headcanon them as having a rift when it came to dealing with problems: she would keep on with her ministrations whereas he would just want to engage in escapisms. But the thing with the infidelity is that one should keep in mind that during that period relations would have to stop once the woman started showing, so Edward having affairs should not be read into too much tbh, perhaps it was more a type of addiction on his part like drinking and eating was - like all part of an excessive Epicureanism which he adopted to relieve himself of his stresses and sorrows (and boy were there many!), so not something that necessarily indicated he grew tired of her or whatever. Maybe she understood that and that’s why she didn’t make a fuss? But then again, the fact that there wasn’t complete faithfulness remains a personal impediment for me with this ship :// that’s just me personally.
Also the discussion we had about Mélusine and the alchemical elements and Edward IV’s own interest in such (which was used as ammunition for George when he accused Edward of engaging in dark arts to corrupt his subjects XD... yes I know très ironique)... made me headcanon him and Elizabeth bonding over this, and perhaps seeing their union as somewhat quite mystical. It would be something so interesting to explore and I think it’s a real shame that people nowadays recoil everytime they hear the word ‘Woodville’ and ‘Mélusine’ put together which is a shame because when handled delicately it could turn into something beautiful and it was certainly not a PG invention!
Also... those two have some bitchin’ fannart!
Tumblr media
So yes, this was quite the stream of consciousness... but I do have a lot of thoughts for this couple! They were my OTP for the longest time after all.

Medieval and early modern queens and powerful elite women were expected to adhere to the gold standard set by the Virgin Mary. They further emphasized this standard by the conscious and careful display of visible and overt femininity and devotion. However, to be recognized as a force to be reckoned with in premodern times, a powerful queen needed to synthesize masculine qualities to manifest un cuer d’homme, whilst paradoxically adhering to gendered social norms—a non-threatening pious and devout feminine outward appearance.
[...] Season six has likewise tapped into a trope of longstanding: “anxieties about women being something other than they seem” (Garber, 2016) — especially evident in the great reveal of Melisandre, the Red Woman, as well as the subtle strategies employed by Margaery Tyrell to neutralize her power-hungry mother-in-law, dowager-queen Cersei. In the case of Melisandre, George R. R. Martin employs “the historical definition of ‘glamour’—as a brand of magic that specializes in deceptive appearances.” (Garber 2016) In many respects, Melisandre’s resemblance to Jean d’Arras’s late fourteenth century heroine, Mélusine of Lusignan, is striking and worthy of scholarly comparison and analysis.
In Game of Thrones, one notable example of a queen who manages the difficult balancing act between her masculine and feminine qualities is Daenerys Targaryen. (Rolker 2015) Margaery Tyrell is yet another. Premodern queens and elite women could aspire to carve out a career for themselves in politics and diplomacy through their children as guardians and queens-regent. A queen’s power frequently pitted females against one another. In the imaginary world of Game of Thrones this is reflected, for example, in the competition for political power between Margaery and Cersei. There are many such examples of instances of female to female power struggles during the actual world of the premodern period.
For feminist scholars, anxieties surrounding the Unknowable Woman, women such as Daenerys, Melisandre and Margaery Tyrell in Game of Thrones, bring into play such analytical lenses as reputation, self-fashioning and gender. The role, place and efficacy of advice in general, and advisors in particular, are significant ideas embedded within [...] the A Song of Ice and Fire series. For scholars of history and literature, this is of considerable relevance to the study of women such as Christine de Pizan and Anne of France, who counselled queens and elite women to look to the achievement of a spotless reputation and an enduring legacy. To exercise independent agency, power and influence in what was almost exclusively a man’s world, both Christine and Anne urged for the deployment of a good dose of juste ypocrisie combined with conscious acts of self-fashioning and self-representation. For Anne, no mere observer and commentator of gender politics, this was the secret to her success.

La Diva
Hypnotisante.

What would you do if you met your double or something very similar ? ---------------------------- Still as much paperwork as the day before and still the day after. The administrative routine. An eternal "pleasure" for anyone with a bit power and obligations. This is the case for King Conrard,  skim through these numerous sheets, signing some ones and tearing others because many of these papers contain the same subjects: An authorization to enlarge a building at X place, requests that He becomes the godfather of such and such a newborn child, erasing a debt, ...
Even though the majority of cases have been triaged by counselors, this doesn't prevent us from having a nice stack to work with.
These files are so unimportant that he could easily entrust them to someone else or do as other rulers have done and burn them directly, without wasting time with these banalities.
But this isn't the monarch's philosophy. This is his island and it is inconceivable to him that another individual can make decisions for him, even on obsolete matters.
This kingdom, he fought to make it what it is today.
A reputation that he wants to preserve and especially, unofficially, to envy his colleagues on the continent.
Nevertheless, since he married his wife, Queen Mélusine, this has somewhat affected his thinking about the management of the kingdom. Her strong temperament and complementary nature make her a perfect assistant for this kind of boring work.
This doesn't prevent mistakes, such as the time when she accepted to pay the debt of a "poor fisherman". Fortunately Conrard had checked and cancelled the acceptance because otherwise it would have caused a disastrous chain reaction on the population, creating enormous jealousies. The kind of situation that a monarch doesn't want to suffer.
A sigh escaped his lips and he mechanically rubbed his eyes. This was the fourth time he had reread the same sentence.
How long was he locked in that office? An hour? Two? Another sigh.
He looks at what he still had to do. About twenty papers left. The idea of throwing them in the fire crosses his mind but he rejects it immediately.
"- I am not Lothaire either... " He mumbles while rubbing his face and suddenly flinches.
Three confident knocks sounded on the imposing door. Who is the fool who dares to disturb him ? The order given that he isn't to be disturbed under any circumstances except in an emergency is broken now: The knocking style of the person doesn't give the impression that a disaster is happening.
Another sigh.
"- Come in !" His voice is loud and with a hint of annoyance. He pretends to read the paper and waits for his interlocutor to enter and try to speak before the monarch cuts him off and dismisses him quickly. The speech already prepared and gloating in his mind about the reaction of the poor buggy. That'll give him a little break.
"- Forgive me for disturbing you, Votre Majesté..."
The surprise invaded the King. Oh no ! Not him! He looks up hurriedly and sees Hyde - the draconic vampire lord - standing in front of him while continuing his speech without the monarch's reaction disturbing him.
"-... I know you are very busy but your Lady needs you. Now." The lord smiles and quietly observes his counterpart taking the time to assimilate the information. The King's face is marked by annoyance.
"- Since when do you play the messenger? Méli could have come to wa..."
Hyde stops him.
"- Well... In simple language: She can't really leave where she is and YOU have to go to her now, without waiting. And don't worry, she's not in danger."
"- ..." Uneasy silence before he answers "You're a friendly guy, Tubesteak, but I have to fin..."
Hyde stops him again and teleports to the right of the King.
"- That's why I'm here !"
Crackles sound and when the King turns to the vampire to tell him these four truths, he's facing... To himself ?! The incomprehension is total.
The other is amused and smiles fully, adding to the strangeness of the situation.
"- I propose two possibilities: One, I stay here, I finish these papers while you go to your dear and tender wife. Or..." His smile becomes more malicious "... Two I join her with your appearance and you stay here, alone in front of these unfortunate documents. What do you decide, Majesté ?"
The shock replaces the anger. The monarch got up from his chair and grabbed the smiling impostor by the collar.
"- DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!"
"- What? To be close to Méli? To do your job? Need to be a little more spe..."
It's Hyde's turn to be stop in his sentence
"YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I MEAN, DEGENERATE ! DON'T TOUCH HER! NEVER !"
Pure rage in his eyes.
A chuckle escapes from the vampire's mouth.
"- This is going to be complicated because I am you, in a way. I know and own the feelings you have for her."
The grip on his collar becomes stronger but the lord smiles sincerely before continuing.
"- But I'm still Me, Hyde. Sure I monopolize your appearance and your psyche, but that's not Me. I'm like an actor playing a very specific role. I am you but not You. Mélusine doesn't interest me... I'm not interested in any relationship or more..."
A short silence where the vampire looks mournful before immediately returning to their natural state.
"- Whatever ! Go and find her! I'll take care of the rest"
Conrard, still a little irritated and troubled by this last part, releases his double and finally answers.
"- Fine ! I'm going to go see her and I hope I don't have to regret this decision..."
"- Yes, don't worry ! Go !" Before Conrard has moved towards the door that the impostor has settled in his previous place and continues his work abandoned a few minutes ago.
The King remains to observe the scene a few moments. This vision is quite disturbing. See yourself where you were a short time before. A true carbon copy. Full of unsuspected possibilities. The King blows this idea out of his mind. This isn't the time for that. The Queen wants to see him and it can't wait any longer.

In response to: for every "🌹" received in my inbox i'll post one random sentence of a random WIP i'm currently writing (https://lady-plantagenet.tumblr.com/post/624973638402228224/for-every-received-in-my-inbox-ill-post-one)
Also tagging @houseofclarence with whom I have discussed this at length ;)
Thank you for sending it back ;5 <3. Since you posted quite a long one I decided to add onto what I had already written. It is an excerpt of this AU I started writing during my ‘A Bygone Era’ hiatus. The premise is: What if Elizabeth Woodville was the posthumous child of Jacquetta of Bedford and John Duke of Bedford? This excerpt takes place in 1452 and both her and Anthony are aged up (she by one year, him by two). It is often disputed whether she was Margaret of Anjou’s maid of honour, but in here I have made her so. There will be some minor tweaks in the narrative obviously (she will probably not marry John Grey), but since I believe in historical determinism some things will remain the same. I have kept the elements of the feud between Warwick and the Woodvilles which predated even the real Elizabeth’s marriage to Edward, and I believe her being of Lancastrian blood would further worsen matters. The sir Hugh John proposal was indeed a part of the real history, and her reaction here quite similar.
Elizabeth of Bedford (Might change the title to something less obvious?):
‘A welsh hero, a knight of Jerusalem..’ started Anthony, before the beggining of his offertory speech was drowned down by his half-sister’s ‘a lackey of Warwick, a suppliant of York’s and a man whose sword be his only fortune’. The proud voice thinned in its emphasis as it hinged onto the last, as if it were the act damnable, proclaimed in an attainder trial. Something unspeakable.
Anthony pulled her from the window seat. little good would it do her to continue staring at activity below, below where the griffin of Montagu flashed at Somerset’s red silkened form as they gestured as much as they spoke. ‘and you, a damozel with beauty as your only dowry, why not a sword to defend it?’. Queen Margaret’s fair daisy was never for want of admirers, for all the Anjou swan’s fabled harshness she unhesitatingly employed and held Elizabeth up. She smelted her, this sixteen year old daughter of her dear old friend, wound her into the finest of protégés.
Perhaps it was some errant strain of the chivalric romance that must have penetrated through that iron-clad skull. Certainly painting that union of her mother’s in a more forgiving light. That union to a knight of the breeds that inspired the poets such as Guilliame de Lorris at their writing desk when concocting their courtly romances. The daughter of the high-born lady, however, was no product of such lofty tales. Borne of the dutiful marriage, conceived in the wake of England’s loss of its French territories. Her goddaughter, her cousin-in-law, Elizabeth of Bedford.
‘My beauty- only? Ha! The name may not be my dowry, but if not that then let the blood. The royal blood of Lancaster, of Bedford’s only child. A sword alone cannot go far enough to protect this part of my dowry, but the golden spurs, the cloths of gold? These are the fortunes I elect in a husband who keeps me’ shot Elizabeth in the manner she had seen the earls of Somerset and Wiltshire affect. Her red-gold Plantagenet hair stirring from her escoffin as she spoke. Hair like the sunset for the forgotten princess damned to slip into obscurity with the imminent fall of Lancaster.
‘Then guard yourself for a future filled with misery and disillusionment, dear sister. For matrimonies are formed of gold and swords, and the less the blood commands, the more diminished its value’ said her half-brother in the grounded manner of his father. The only tone that was the antidote to Elizabeth’s hotness, the sing-song cajoles of their sisters and nurse only ever enboldened, encouraged. ‘To the great Earl of Warwick you will ever be the daughter of Richard Woodville, humble esquire. Should him and York grow powerful.. that is all you shall be’
‘And I ever do love Richard Woodville as a father’ she said cooled and more affectionately ‘and you as a full-blooded brother’ she added clasping his hands within her own ‘but to think how that fool Sir Hugh, believed he would win my heart and hand by having these Yorkist lords compel me for him, well, it is deeply insulting. As for you brother, suggesting I accept?’
He let out a snort at that last one ‘Nothing of the sort. I only think on how far a gesture of goodwill with such lords may serve’ he gave into a loud gulp before continuing, ‘How you may find your prospects even dowdier by the time you are of age. Heaven forfend’ he finished crossing himself. Ever as godly as he was clever, even steeped in shallow youth.
His sister knew for what the sweep of the cross, was dedicated. ‘Gods, again with the eerie premonitions of Lancaster’s fall? You worry for naught. Say, how many have there been like York? Stirring up old resentments? Calling into question the king’s council? Falling like flies during my grandfather Bolingbroke’s reign’
‘But how many had a claim like York’s?’ slipped in a third voice. Stern as it was motherly. The Duchess of Bedford passed from behind the twinned stools on which they were sat. The sarcanet of her ultramarine skirts whispering louder with each quickening pace. The famed beauty’s heart-shaped henin giving her the airs of both a Queen and their fabled ancestress, Mélusine, the spirit of springs and waters. ‘That man was certainly less prickly with his words. I think less prickly about his grandeur too than our great lord Warwick’ she added with all the fabled sardonicism of the French. ‘Now go Anthony, leave your sister to rest, a troubled woman’s chamber and company is no suitable place for a young boy’.
Unquestioningly, the dutiful boy took his leave with a curt bow before dashing to the sparring yard with those his age, or perhaps to a large branched oak, which would generously shade him as he read. ‘Yes, I daresay you were right mother, York sounded all the more like a beseeching father in his letter, rather than a lord to his serf’
‘It is the peace given to men when they are endowed with five sons: Edward, Edmund, George, Thomas and Richard, last we heard. Oh but the sacrifices I would have borne, to have given your father the same peace, my child’ she said gently as she placed her arm of the head that lay in her lap, Scarlett silk rustling against her blue, like blood diluted by the sanguine river. ‘Alas, god had seen what giving the brothers of Kings progeny and long lines of descent does to the stability of England, and must have thought, “houses of Lancaster, York be as you may, but by my leave there shall never grow to be a house of Bedford as there never was one of Clarence” and thus, they seized your inheritance for when I, at your age, refused to remain a widow’.
Elizabeth, acknowledged her mother’s plight. But on certain days, when the Queen’s position waned, and the tethers holding them frayed, the pragmatism confined within cursed her mother for acting on the passions of both their natures. Was I not enough, mother?
