Tiaras at Ajuda Palace
Last summer the new Royal Treasury Museum within Ajuda National Palace in Lisbon was opened to display the Portuguese Crown Jewels. The new museum was built using insurance money from the 2002 theft of some of the jewels when they were on exhibition in the Netherlands and was part of a larger restoration project of the palace. Find out more about visiting here.

The museum features several tiaras and a lot of other jewelry like the emerald bow brooch below that I just had to include.

I genuinely envy english-speakers who can just refer to any Wikipedia article as a source, when the portuguese wikipedia of any king is so clearly written by a monarchist even the sources are absolute shit and the most recent is like, a book published under Salazar in 1933. Queen Maria Pia’s page paints a picture of a holy woman who supported the poor as though she was not known for having the most disgusting taste for knickknacks and to spend so much money on luxury she was heavily criticised, particularly forcing like one dude to carry her treasured piano on his goddamn back. who fucking writes this.

Wrapped 2023 (Aijamisespava Edition!)
Oookay, taking a break from my messenger role in Eurovision Land to bring you something different (buckle up, this is going to get long). Yesterday was Spotify Wrapped, and while I'm off celebrating my favorite songs that made it to that top 100 list, I also become a wild statistician and bring you my stats.
General Stats: Well...I listened for 139,902 minutes (more than my friends and family), my top artist was Taylor Swift with Evanescence, Panic! At The Disco, My Chemical Romance, and Loïc Nottet rounding out my top 5. I'd go into my top 5 songs but.....Loïc Nottet took 3rd and 4th with "Mélodrame" and "Mud Blood" respectively. What about the rest? That's what I'm here for.
Welcome to my Eurovision 2023. Any Eurovision song that makes my Spotify Wrapped is in my Grand Final. So countries can participate as many times as they appear. So here is my list. I'll have their actual placement on my Wrapped in parenthesis.
Latvia 2023: "Aijā" by Sudden Lights (1)
Serbia 2023: "Samo Mi Se Spava" by Luke Black (2)
Türkiye 2010: "We Could Be The Same" by maNga (5)

Italy 2023: "Due Vite" by Marco Mengoni (17)
Armenia 2023: "Future Lover" by Brunette (19)
Austria 2023: "Who The Hell Is Edgar?" by Teya + Salena (20)
Lithuania 2023: "Stay" by Monika Linkyte (23)
Finland 2023: "Cha Cha Cha" by Käärijä (26)
France 2023: "Évidemment" by La Zarra (27)
Romania 2023: "D.G.T. (Off And On)" by Theodor Andrei (29)
United Kingdom 2023: "I Wrote A Song" by Mae Muller (31)
Australia 2016: "Sound Of Silence" by Dami Im (48)

Italy 2014: "La Mia Città" by Emma (64)
Austria 2022: "Halo" by LUM!X and PIA MARIA (68)
Russia 2016: "You Are The Only One" by Sergey Lazarev (69)
Belarus: "Forever" by ALEKSEEV (72)
Denmark 2013: "Only Teardrops" by Emmelie de Forest (73)
Ireland 2020: "Story Of My Life" by Lesley Roy (79)
Ireland 2022: "That's Rich" by Brooke (87)
Ukraine 2017: "Time" by O. Torvald (93)
Finland 2022: "Jezebel" by The Rasmus (96)
Cyprus 2021: "El Diablo" by Elena Tsagrinou (97)
Moldova 2010: "Run Away" by Sunstroke Project (100)
Honorable mentions go to "Gladiator" by Jann and "Novi Plan Drugi San" by Filip Baloš for making my Wrapped at 21 and 32, respectively. They may not have made it to the Eurovision stage, but they have a soft spot in my heart. Unfortunately, I did not have any Junior Eurovision songs make it. But if they did, they would be listed.

There is a new documentary series about the Portuguese Crown Jewels that are displayed at the Royal Treasury Museum at Ajuda National Palace. It is called 'Brilhante' and is presented by Teresa Dimas on SIC's streaming service, Opto.
Tumblr media
There will be six 10-15 minute episodes each featuring a different item from the crown jewels. It premiered on September 19th with a new episode every Tuesday so the first three should be out now.
King João VI's Crown
King José I's Snuff Box
Queen Maria Pia's Diadem of Stars
Infanta Maria Ana's Emerald Bow Brooch
King Miguel I's Sword
King João VI's Order of the Golden Fleece
instagram
I haven't figured out how to watch it yet but if anyone does let me know. The footage of the Diadem of Stars looks stunning.

Dulchedo
Et spes
nostra
Salve!
Ad te suspiramus
Gementes et flentes
In hac lacurium valle.
Eia ergo; Advocata Nostra.
Illos tuuos.
Misericordes Occulos
Ad nos converte,
Benidictus fructus ventris tui.
O Clemens, O pia, O dulcis,
Virgo Maria.
Hail Holy Queen.
Mother of Mercy.
My life.
My sweetness.
My hope.
Hail!
To you do we cry,
To you do we send up our sighs.
Mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.
Therefore, most gracious advocate.
Turn your eyes of mercy towards us.
And show unto us;
the Blessed fruit of your womb.
O clement, o loving, o sweet
Virgin mary

ESC 2022 semi finale 1 - my ramblings
Genuinely shocked by Ronela’s vocal performance. At the national final and the Eurovision preparties she had stuck out to me as one of the better vocalists but this was painful. Also wasn’t a fan of her staging and costuming. It didn’t match the song at all. Not surprising that she didn’t qualify. Big shame though, I was rooting for her.
Citi Zeni on the other hand in my opinion did an amazing performance. Beyond the meme of everyone in Europe collectively screeching “pussy” as loudly as they can, I found that Citi Zeni brought an infectious energy to their performance and delivered an amazing spectacle. Was really expecting them to qualify and am shocked and a bit heartbroken that they nq’d. Not to be all conspiracy theorist, but I’m pretty sure the jury did them dirty.
Monica Liu was amazing, she always is and she will be in the finals. 10/10, not much else to say. My queen.
Marius Bear’s song was the only one I actively disliked going in to the semi finale and hearing him not hit those higher notes and seeing the underwhelming staging, I was really shocked when he was the first announced to qualify. And I don’t want to be too harsh to the guy, but in my opinion there were several artists that had a better song and a better performance. Absolutely baffling to me how we got here.
LPS really stepped up their staging and I personally enjoyed their performance, though it was clear from the start that it wouldn’t be enough to qualify for the grand finale. I hope these kids keep Eurovision as a fond memory and continue doing music, they deserve it.
Kalush Orchestra were my favorites going in to the semi finale and they definitely delivered. I am just about sick of hearing tone-deaf westerners complain about supposed “pity-votes”, which first of all is a huge assumption and second of all ignores the fact that they were favorites in the rankings even before the war started. Regardless of all of that, if Kalush Orchestra win, it’ll be because of their captivating performance and beautiful song.
Intelligent Music Project were a little bit of a pleasant surprise. I didn’t terribly like them or their song all that much going into the semi finale, but their performance turned out to be quite solid. With a better song they might even have qualified. But as is, their nq is not a surprise at all.
S10’s performance was beautiful and emotional and unlike with Marius Bear, here the stripped down staging really worked in her favour. I ended up enjoying her performance the most. Can’t wait to see what happens in the grand finale.
I’m gonna be honest, I really like Trenulețul, it’s a fun dumb song that’s just campy enough for Eurovision. I’ve enjoyed every Eurovision entry of Zdob şi Zdub and this one is no exception. But I wouldn’t in a million years have expected them to qualify and I’m really stoked that they did.
MARO was another positive surprise. A captivating performance and great stage presence. I was completely won over after it and now I’m happy to see them perform in the finale.
I had zero feelings about Guilty Pleasure, it never particular stood out to me in a positive or negative way, and it was the same in the semi finale. No surprise that  Mia Dimšić didn’t qualify.
I thought REDDI’s performance has definitely improved since the national final, but that said I still don’t enjoy their song at all. Similar to Intelligent Music Project, as someone who’s preferred music genres are under the rock and metal umbrella, it’s harder to accept a bland rock song in Eurovision than a good pop song/showtune ballad.
Pia Maria was not treated fairly by the press. She has the same age as LPS and they were never questioned about their inexperience or bullied for having shaky vocals. And many many people who went out of their way to bully this 18-year-old need to take a long hard look in the mirror and reconsider why they have the urge to make a kid miserable. And it wasn’t just her vocals that made Austria nq, the staging was awful, sticking the two of them into a giant LED ring, while having them dressed in black with a darkened stage. What were they thinking?
Systur have really grown on me. Their song was delightful and beautiful and the three of them seem really nice. I wasn’t expecting them to qualify, but I’m happy that they did.
Die Together was never one of my favorite songs before the semi finale but I think the staging worked wonders to improve my feelings on it. Amanda has an amazing stage presence and she really nailed the vocals. Definitely someone to look out for in the finale.
Subwoolfer was one of my favorites of the night, everything played together amazingly and I’m just really happy to see them perform on Saturday again.
Rosa Linn in my opinion had the best staging of the evening and despite the song not really being my thing, the performance was shockingly good and Rosa Linn definitely deserved to qualify
TLDR, lots of surprises for me last night, some of my favourites didn’t make it and others I have overlooked before have really grown on me after their performances. Also the only song I dislike has made it into the grande finale, but hey, at least someone needs to continue the tradition of zero points in the televotes *shrugs*
