I've realised something, HTTYD3 IS JUST WORSE RIO 1 AND 2! Rio 1 handled the romance much better with a proper love story showing the inner workings of both of their personalities, while the second Rio was weaker, I still think it had a better message and a believable arc for Blue to want to leave humans.
Brief recap of Rio: Blue is captured as a baby then cared for by a human until he's an adult, he never really thinks of himself as a pet, but he is and this is explored in the rest of the movie. Blue thought to be the last male of his species, so he gets transported to Rio to mate with the last female of his species (Jewel), they hate each other at first meeting because Blue likes humans and only sees the best in him while Jewel hates humans and only sees the worst (see what I'm getting at here) shenanigans ensue and they are both chained together, Jewel learns that Blue cannot fly, so they are both stuck on the ground, the rest of the movie is them escaping a hunter (rare bird trafficker) and his animal sidekick (Cockatoo named Nigel) and slowly falling in love, in the end Blue chooses to save Jewel rather than go to his human, after he learns to fly by himself to save Jewel. Jewel gets injured and has to trust humans so she can fly again. At the end of the movie they stay in Rio at a bird sanctuary and start a family.
So you see how this could have worked so, SO much better than the piss poor characterisation than HTTYD3, Jewel is a likeable character with believable motivations and so is Blue. Okay so the 2nd Rio;
Movie starts with Jewel acting like a bird, foraging for food, while Blue and his kids are eating human food. Blue and Jewel travel to the Amazon and find Jewels family, Blue doesn't fit in because he's not used to living without humans, he keeps human technology and doesn't understand the culture. Again, shenanigans ensue and after the entire movie of Blue not being able to fit in and hating it, he chooses his family over humans because he understands that this is what's best for them. In the end that area becomes a protected zone and Blues human (I think) move closer to that Blue can visit them from time to time while still remaining wild.
This story is so much more focused on the characters complex feelings towards their natural environment while still maintaining their intelligence. I don't think I need to explain how this could have made HTTYD3 so much better, the dragons leave to the hidden world while still Toothless still visits Hiccup and they are still found family while Toothless does what's best for his family.
Toothless doesn't need to magically be able to fly when saving the lightfury, just being able to learn how to lock his tailfin or some other way that he can save her without human interaction.
If anybody cares to write this AU please tag me! I'd love to read it

Movie Slate: I want to make sure the beak and the feathers are correct too.
Jamesy: Oh you’re fine, don’t worry about it, seriously.
Movie Slate: After these movies did such a good job representing birds, I didn’t want to fall short.
Jamesy: I see where you’re coming from, yeah.
Movie Slate: These were fun movies, tho.
Jamesy: Eh, they’re OK.

The Puerto Rican flag showing up when Rio snaps at Miles for getting a B in Spanish is such a fun little example of the incredible attention to detail in this movie

Despite popular belief, I dont think that Miles' parents would hate Hobie right off the bat:
Rio and Jefferson meeting Hobie but it plays out like that episode of Daria where Trent and Jane lived with Daria's family and they didn't know what to do because they've never really lived in a household with two parents that are at least semi involved in their lives
Like imagine by circumstance Hobie gets manipulated into staying at the Morales'-Davis household for a few days after Hobie accidentally says that his parents aren't around after Rio and Jefferson say that his parents are probably worried about him being out at their house late.
Rio insists because Hobie obviously doesn't eat enough and could use a few days of good meals and the bags under his eyes have bags and Jefferson agrees because Hobie needs someone to show him "guidance" and to help him "get his life together", and Miles is just shocked that his parents not only love his boyfriend, they basically made him a part of the family.
Hobie tries to be grateful at first but then he gets overwhelmed when Rio and Jefferson actually scold him for staying out too late because he's never had a curfew and they sit him down and talk to him about going to college and shit.
He gets so overwhelmed because their need to parent this boy is so strong, he makes up some bullshit about his "uncle" taking him into his custody just so he can go back to his universe.

We as a society need to give Rio Morales more credit for seeing the way Miles deflated when Gwen had to leave and immediately switching gears from “This girl isn’t good enough for my son” to “How do I save this wedding”

Rio and Jefferson pulled the most wholesome “This boy did not just bring home a white girl” I’ve ever seen in a movie pertaining to an interracial romance that included a white woman/girl. Because they’re absolutely kind and respectful to Gwen, but they were not expecting a white girl. I cackled at Rio’s “I bet she doesn’t speak Spanish.” Like MA’AM.
I know a significant part of it was them learning to let Miles go and accepting he’s growing up, but another part was they genuinely didn’t expect him bringing home a white girl. That definitely caught them off guard because they didn’t see that coming at all. I love their reactions to it bc it’s similar to how my parents responded to my brother’s white gf.
“Oh, she just said my first name.” Yeah, felt that on an instinctual level. Grew up in the South, Mr. and Mrs. always came first, but this isn’t a race thing because Ganke does the same thing, which neither Rio or Jefferson appreciate. Feel this is just a generational gap sort of thing.
A tidbit about Miles. I really, really appreciate the film including his lowkey attraction to Margo Kess. Gwen and Miles are my preferred ship, but this was a nice touch where you saw Miles and Margo vibe with each other, albeit briefly. There were some sparks. In his escape, Margo hesitated when she could’ve stopped Miles and eventually turns on Miguel, realizing that while his motives may be noble, his methods are not.
There are other small, subtle nuanced concerning race and depiction of race that I genuinely respect the film for depicting so seamlessly. When Rio corrected the guidance counselor on her immigration status, “I’m from Puerto Rico. I’m from here.” But she slowly accepts the line if it means helping Miles’ succeed.
Also the contrast between Miles and 42-Miles hairstyles. That is so POIGNANT to me. Miles is such an open, caring boy and his hair reflects that bountiful spirit he has. It’s thick and open and free. 42-Miles has been damaged by the world so extensively that he’s closed off emotionally and his hair, tight, coiled braids, reflect the coldness he lives in and has become.
