Staying hydrated is very important for internal health

What is an unreliable narrator?

An unreliable narrator is a POV character (or POV narration) that KNOWS and CHOOSES TO WITHHOLD vital information from the audience. This information is often revealed later, in order to fundamentally reframe the narrative the audience has experienced until that point.

An unreliable narrator is not a POV character withholding information from other characters, nor is it POV narration that is telling a story through a biased or emotionally tinted point of view (unless that bias is causing them to hide important information from the audience)

We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson:

✅ UNRELIABLE NARRATOR! Merricat knows exactly who killed her family (she did) and does not tell the reader. Learning this reframes her behavior towards her remaining family as willful manipulation, and her dislike of her cousin Charles as (partially) a desire to keep her secret hidden -- though he's also a massive dick.

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gillman:

❌ NOT AN UNRELIABLE NARRATOR! The narrator of The Yellow Wallpaper knows about as much as we the audience do. We are experiencing her slide into paranoia and mental decline with her. Although it is horrifying to realize that the "smooch" along the wall is probably a mark left by a former inmate of the room, this discovery serves to heighten feelings of disgust and fear that we were already experiencing rather than creating them.

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk

✅ UNRELIABLE NARRATOR! It's arguable whether or not the unnamed narrator of Fight Club knows that Tyler Durden is a figment of his imagination. However, the narration knows this and chooses to keep that fact from us. Hints are sprinkled throughout the story that Tyler isn't who he seems, but they're only legible once we have the big puzzle piece. This turns the Narrator from a disaffected dude worn out by capitalism who falls under the sway of a charming sociopath – in other words, someone in whom we might see ourselves – into that very sociopath.

The first Pirates of the Caribbean movie ⁽ᵈᶦᵈ ʸᵒᵘ ʳᵘⁿ ᵒᵘᵗ ᵒᶠ ᵐᵒʳᵉ ᵇᵒᵒᵏ ᵉˣᵃᵐᵖˡᵉˢˀ ᴵᵗ'ˢ ᵃ ᴹᵒⁿᵈᵃʸ ᵐᵒʳⁿᶦⁿᵍ ˢʰᵘᵗ ᵘᵖ⁾

❌ NOT AN UNRELIABLE NARRATOR! Oooh boy, we learn a lot of spicy secrets in PotC! Immortal skeleton pirates are real, Elizabeth Swann's blood can't cure them, Jack takes a coin to also become a skeleton pirate... etc. Captain Jack knows a lot of these facts and doesn't share them with the class, but crucially: he's not our narrator. Elizabeth is. We find out these facts at the same time that she does, and our understanding of the world of the film changes at the same time as hers. We even get to see her being mega-pissed at Jack for not sharing crucial information. We do know that Will Turner is in love with her before she does, but she's not hiding that information from us – she's just a dumb teen who doesn't understand a crush.

I would give this advice to any young actress. The same advice I've given to my daughters. Don't turn your femininity, your youth, your sexuality into a commodity. It has a shelf life. Instead, get an education, learn your craft, cultivate your intellect, travel to far away places, deepen your life experiences. It is in the end, the richness of your being that you bring on stage or in front of a camera.
