For my own dignity ignore what half of this says OK? Ok. I really love Susan. I feel like I've been neglecting her lately... She's legitimately a really interesting character. I think a lot about the way that Martin talks about her and the sort of characterization he applies to her. She's a person who definitely has a bit of a stoic, no-nonsense exterior, and it'd be hard to say that she's exceptionally nice, but beyond that she's a person who is extraordinarily caring and kind. She's respectful and she looks out for her people and there seems to be an extent to which she can't stand to see someone suffer if she knows there's something she, personally, could do about it. Martin's old (likely non-canon) idea that she and Felix would become closer friends post-crash, because she recognizes him as a person who has lost all meaningful connections in his life, and doesn't think he deserves that kind of isolation even if she doesn't particularly like him as a person, is something I think about a lot. Also the recent Q&A tidbit about her relationship with Linda feat. Martin calling her a "Really, really good person."

And all of that means a lot to me, because it exists in the face of, like. Her death. She died. She was fundamentally betrayed by a person she paid nothing but respect and begrudging kindness towards. And that Felix idea really sticks with me, because it's that fundamental concept where she had the chance to get the hell out of dodge, but she didn't, for the sake of a man she didn't even like, because she could recognize that if she didn't extend him that kindness, no one else was going to. And she paid the ultimate price for it. She's so good and so fascinating to me, and I really want to see more of her and get a better idea of what exactly her role as a character in the series is going to be.

Addendum: "project my own issues" is specifically in reference to me really liking to think she has autism. Fun headcanon of mine

“You know, I didn’t get to thank you properly earlier.”

“Perhaps because you were too busy running away?” You send him an amused grin.

“I didn’t stray too far. I was close enough to see you bought what I wanted.” He leans forward against the backrest, gesturing with his hands as he speaks. “How about I buy it off you? I swear I’ll pay this time.”

“Hmm.. I’m not sure.” You pick at your nails, seemingly disinterested. “What if I happen to find myself in need of some…”you pause to recall the name of the herb in your possession, but come up short. “What if I plan to keep it?”

He pulls a coin pouch from his satchel and places nearly double the amount you had paid on the table in front of you. “Would this amount suffice?” he asks, lip curling into a smirk. You pretend to contemplate the decision momentarily, tapping your chin.

“I suppose it could.” you say, gathering the coins into your palm and retrieving the bundle of herbs from your bag. As soon as you lay the herbs onto the table, he snatches them away. “What do you plan to use those for anyways? I’ve hardly heard of them before.”

“A friend of mine asked me to retrieve them while we were in town. I have no clue what he plans to do with them.” A loud series of footsteps from the entrance grasp your attention.

“San, who’s the new friend?” Seven more men take seats at your table, all but encircling you.

Quick Review: Scout’s Honor by Lily Anderson Rating: 5/5

This was a wonderfully imaginative, brilliantly diverse and lots of fun. I loved finally getting a story about the secret defenders of the earth where they actually experienced effects of their work -- mental health struggles, acquired disabilities, etc. -- and had to learn how to cope with them. *cough* Take note, Rick Riordan. *cough*

Another wonderful book from Lily Anderson. I can't wait to see what she brings us next!

I started my new job for the summer (training) and am trying to become more involved on-campus as a leader, but it is the weirdest thing when people know who you are.
