#Archovember Day 23 - Sordes pilosus

Sordes pilosus was just a small, unassuming pterosaur from Late Jurassic Kazakhstan, but it was the first pterosaur that offered us proof that pterosaurs were covered in a coat of fuzzy filament later named pycnofibers. While fuzz was first reported on Scaphognathus in 1831, this was widely debated and doubted. But Sordes’ integument was undeniable. (Btw, it was discovered in the 1960s and named in 1971… so the JP franchise really has no excuse… just sayin…)

Since then, several Anurognathid fossils have shown that pycnofibers are closer to proto-feathers than previously thought, behaving similar to bird down. And then, in 2022, a specimen of Tupandactylus was described with complex melanosomes in its pycnofibers, strengthening their relationship to feathers and also making the idea of colorful pterosaurs more plausible. Also, as pycnofibers would have aided in thermoregulation, they strongly indicate that pterosaurs were warm-blooded.

Named “hairy devil” or “hairy filth” (which, rude), Sordes pilosus had no crest and long, pointed jaws which seem to be adapted for crunching down on tough-shelled invertebrates or slippery amphibians. As did other basal pterosaurs, Sordes had a long, veined tail.

Along with our previously visited Batrachognathus, Sordes lived alongside the crocodylomorph Karatausuchus, the stem-salamander Karaurus, lizards, turtles, fish, and avialans.
