He stumbled into faith and thought
“God, this is all there is?”
The pictures in his mind arose
And began to breathe
And no one saw and no one heard
They just followed lead
The pictures in his mind awoke
And began to breed...
...Blue lips
Blue veins
Blue
The color of our planet from far, far away
hey so i haven’t used a tablet in over a year now haha
here’s a warmup sketch of ol’ spocko from yesterday

Any other Star Trek fan sudden experience a shift while watching season one and the episodes go from "tacky, vaguely endearing but ultimately just kind of sexist" to "wow somebody just made an actually funny joke oh wow that shot was placed where it was placed for a REASON OH WOW the acting is suddenly GOOD HOLY SHIT" because I just had that and now I finally understand why people watch this shit

OK but srsly, that episode with the kids with evil mind-control powers. The kids showed Uhura an image of her own elderly face to terrorize her, which is a thing Original Star Trek seemed to enjoy BUT, what really got me is WHY it terrorized her. Kirk asks her what she sees and she doesn’t say ‘I’m old’ she says ‘My death’. Like, she isn’t terrified of not being beautiful anymore, but of being ill and in pain and helpless to it and finally, to see herself DYING. And I don’t care how metal you think you are, seeing yourself die’s gotta be MAJORLY disturbing.
That really messed me up, I had troubles sleeping after that episode.

WELCOME TO JJ BEING AN IDIOT
So, a quick note before we begin: I have severe ts. It makes life hard, but the hardest part for me was accepting the fact I have a disability. To cope I began writing a story. Around this time I started getting into superheroes, most notably, Danny Phantom. So a few elements may be inspired by him, just warning you, however, this is my idea and story. If I did accidentally copy someone leave me a note and I’ll check it out. Got it? Cool.
I remember that night like it was yesterday, even 5 years later I can still hear the cicadas humming, still smell the warm summer breeze. But the part I remember most vividly was the heat. The a/c in my house had broken and the heat was enough to make even me, a self-proclaimed good kid, want to sneak out for a late night swim. And that's exactly what I did.
Carefully I crawled out of my bedroom window, onto the roof. The tiles were still burning hot, even though the sun had gone down hours ago. Shoes were a nuisance to 11-year-old me, but luckily for my feet, the spindly birch tree I would be using to escape was only a few feet away.
Nimbly, I dropped downwards onto the closest limb, keeping as quiet as possible as to not wake the neighbors. Once I reached the ground I began the mile-long treck to the deepest part of the creek, in the thickest part of the woods. Funnily enough, I didn’t really mind being in the woods, alone, at night. Sometimes I wonder what would’ve happened if I had gotten scared and turned back that night. But I didn’t. I reached the glittering, only slightly polluted, stretch of the creek I had fondly nick-named ‘the swimming hole’. Without further ado, I plunged into the cold, murky water. Most people would never willingly swim in jeans, but I liked the weight of the soaking wet denim. It was comforting.
After splashing around for about an hour I crawled out onto the bank to stare at the stars. Then out of the corner of my eye, there was a light. Almost like a spotlight but neon green. It shone through the trees giving the woods an almost otherworldly effect.
“What?” I whispered as I sprung to my feet. The light seemed to call me towards it. I stupidly stumbled forward off the trail into the woods. As I got closer I could hear two arguing voices.
“You told me you’d have an artificial heart!” A man shouted.
“And I do!” The other man huffed.
“I don’t know what that is, but it’s definitely not a heart.”
“Does the word experimental mean anything to you?”
“Experimental doesn’t mean GREEN, Davis!” The first man shouted.
“Oh, come on! You already agreed to let me do the surgery. It’s her last hope and we both know it.” Davis sighed, “C’mon, Jefferey.”
“No. No! I’ll bribe the doctors, I’ll cheat the system... I can’t let her die.”
I strained my ears, but couldn’t hear another word. I crept closer, peeking around a tree. Now I could see the source of the voices. two large men, dressed in all black stood on either side of a glowing fist-sized gadget.
I still couldn’t quite hear, not taking my eye off the green light I stepped forward.
Fangs pierced into my ankle, delivering searing hot pain into my leg. I yelped.
“What was that?” Shouted Jeffery. “You said nobody would be in the woods after dark!”
“Shut up! It was probably just a dog.”
It was then my Tourettes decided to make an appearance. “IM GOING GHOST!” I ticced.
“And I’m assuming that was a dog too.” Jeffery spat.
Without a word, Davis pulled out a flashlight and shined it into the bushes where I sat, cradling my snake bite. “Hi?” I smiled awkwardly.
Jeffery ran up to me and grabbed the front of my shirt, pulling me upwards. “What did you hear?” He hissed.
My jaw clenched as I tried to squirm my way out of his grasp. No luck. Plan B. “Nothing, nothing, I um- I was um- I was- I got lost.”
“You’re gonna forget what you saw here, right?” He threatened.
I nodded and he dropped me to the ground. I tried to stand up and run, but my ankle was so swollen I could barely move.
“Wait, don’t let him get away, I have an idea.” Davis grinned, a sinister note in his voice.
“What do you mean?” Questioned Jeffery.
“Your daughter needs a heart. I need to test my invention.”
“By God, you’re right!” Jeffery began laughing in relief.
“Night-night” Davis smiled.
The last thing I saw was the man’s steel-toed boot flying towards my head. Then it all went black.

cafeleningrad replied to your post “airyairyquitecontrary: airyairyquitecontrary: ...”
Star Treck was created under the concept of an utopia in which humans (all humans!) live in peace together! Martin Luther King asked Nichelle Nichols to keep on playing Uhura because Star Treck was incredibly progressive - especially for the 1960s. the original concept still remains being progressive in many aspects for human rights visions.
Yep. I really dislike this trend to look at TOS as “Oh this backwards first show, look how sexist and horrible it was” without one lick of attention being paid to the history of the show and the social climate it existed in. Context is a thing that a lot of people don’t take into account, but without context, your understanding of any given situation is seriously flawed.
It’s also scientifically unacceptable to analyse a work of fiction created in the past solely by modern-day criteria. Looking at where it falls on the scale of progressive/conservative means primarily looking at where it fell in its time. A comparison with the present is not verboten, and can be very interesting and also useful - but it’s entirely unsuitable to judge its actual progressiveness and impact at the time of its creation.

I know that this is a world building thing or whatever but it’s strange to me that starships only have one captain. Like wouldn’t it be much more efficient to have more than one, so that the others could work in shifts and hold each other accountable?
That way they could avoid unfortunate lapses in judgement, ensure the full mental health of all workers, and allow for different points of view.
