“gaming asks”
🎈 original post 🎈
First game you can remember playing?
either tetris or skifree or space cadet pinball
Last game you played?
BLACK BIRD by onion games for nintendo switch!! it’s basically “defender” but with that great onion games/lovedelic art style. it’s really great tho there seems to be some occasional slowdown on the switch.
Games you’ve played?
i have played “virtual boy wario land”, “pac-man VS.”, and “rockstar games presents table tennis”, among others.
Game(s) you’re currently playing?
this is too long a list but: i’m currently playing BLACK BIRD, super mario 3D world, bowser’s fury, hitman 3 (which i “beat” but am nowhere near finished with), nioh 2 (only just started but rly liked), golf on mars, ACNH. (also unfinished: ghostrunner, RDR2, prodeus, “the dark pictures: man of medan”, sludge life, metro exodus, tony hawk pro skater 1+2 (finished 1 but not 2))
Game you plan to play next?
more BLACK BIRD! i think i might have been at the final boss. that might put me in the mood for some MILLION ONION HOTEL or maybe restarting DANDY DUNGEON(, both from onion games).
Games on your to-play list?
i just bought “The Ninja Warriors Once Again, or: The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors”, ODDWORLD: stranger’s wrath HD, and “Sky Racket” when they were on sale on the eshop recently. i also downloaded SINE MORA EX, might load that up whenever i’m done with BLACK BIRD. i might try to play more cyberpunk 2077 before tim rogers’s review hits (though i didn’t really like the game at all). i rly wanna play more nioh 2 as well. generally, prey (2017), sekiro, RE4, pathologic 2, and rain world.
Game you’d get if time / money was no object?
chess, netrunner, magic the gathering. or rainbow six seige
Favorite game?
DOOM (1993), or TETRIS EFFECT, or moon: Remix RPG Adventure (or donkey kong: jungle beat)
Favorite game franchise ?
donkey kong, “souls”, or mario
Favorite game in a series?
mario 3, f-zero GX
Favorite game to play?
f-zero gx or god hand. maybe sekiro. using those gamecube shoulder buttons to slide side to side in F0GX and then pulling both for those 90° turns feels amazing. no dodge has ever felt better than using the right stick in “god hand”.
Most frustrating game to play?
tetris 99 is just not what i like abt tetris. dirt 5 feels like competitive plastic chewing. forced TAA, crashes, jerkweed voice fuckers spitting in your ear constantly, gross dutch angled race countdown, bogus music 😑 bogus! rockstar games also frustrate me (tho i like RDR2 & table tennis (& i probably like the manhunt games)); those awful menus do nothing but clunk. (having to hit “A” scroll the map in the map tab in GTA V? when the map is the only thing you can interact with on screen? 😑)
Comfort game?
mario kart 8 dx, puyo puyo tetris
Underrated game?
moon: Remix RPG Adventure, kane & lynch 2: dog days, rock band unplugged
Game that reminds you of your childhood?
lego star wars, “star wars battlefront ii: the 2004 one”
Game you’re really good at?
guideline tetris. i’m also good at star wars battlefront ii but only on mos eisley and only against bots
Game with the most playtime?
across different versions, tetris. on my switch ACNH takes the cake over BOTW, puyo puyo tetris, and mario kart 8 dx. on steam it’s dirt 4.
Favorite console?
PS2 & GBA SP (which just both happen to be the first consoles i had as a kid). honorable mentions to the gamecube, the personal computer (which is the actual best but does not count, i suppose), and “the switch pro”.
Favorite game ending?
nier automata or moon: Remix RPG Adventure or APE OUT
Favorite genre / kind of game?
racing games (see: f-zero GX, burnout 2, outrun 2, dirt 4, mario kart 8 dx, hotshot racing, etc.), “stylish character action” (god hand, bayonetta 2) or “hard action” (god hand, ape out, disc room, tormentor X punisher), platformers
Favorite side games / quests?
the baker in moon: Remix RPG Adventure, siegward in dark souls iii, dark souls/bloodborne quests in general
Favorite cheat codes / glitches?
my fav cheat code is the one in lego star wars that changes all guns to coffee mugs. in super mario land 2: six golden coins you can make mario fall into the game’s memory and walk directly to the end of the game.
Favorite game mechanism?
the directional dodges in GOD HAND. the push/grab in APE OUT. looping level design, like doom or dark souls or metroid. getting a tetris.
Favorite characters from a game?
wario, bayonetta, everyone in moon, donkey kong, the guy from panic restaurant
Favorite boss battle?
beauvoir from nier automata during route B. also a fan of the final boss in dark souls iii.
Favorite game soundtrack?
katamari damacy, moon, mario 3, botw, ape out
Most calming game soundtrack?
tetris effect, DKC, firelink shrine theme/DS1 menu music
Most energetic / pump up game soundtrack?
ape out, those digital hardcore songs in TAIKO NO TATSUJIN
Favorite boss fight music?
something from splatoon or bloodborne probably
Favorite game aesthetic?
megaman legends, sonic mania, mario 3, the wario land games, moon
Favorite character designs?
moon, chulip, the wario land series, katamari, panic restaurant
Favorite game fanart / fanartist?
splendidland
Favorite game fanfiction / author?
those splendidland comics where mario says fuck or where smash brothers characters are gay for each other. also this CYELATM
Tumblr media
Do you make fancontent for any games?
i got ok at drawing wario a while ago. i should practice again
What streamers / playthroughs would you recommend?
jerma985: jurassic park trespasser, saw 1 & 2. giant bomb: “giant bomb makes mario”, “hitsmas”. aurateur.
What skins are on your controllers?
my own :-(
Are you a completionist?
no, i do play slowly though. as far as being a series/franchise completionist, i am bad about thinking i need context for new games by playing old games in the same genre first
Has anything made you ragequit a game?
ornsein & smough :-( bad menus, slow tutorials in lots of games
What do your customizable characters look like?
green skinned ladies with mustaches, balding or with a bob
What game would you suggest to a non-gamer?
golf on mars, bad chess

Do you have switch game recs?
YES do i ever!!! ty so much for asking
play undertale/deltarune (oldschool rpg/bullet hell) even if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t normally like games like that. i know hype aversion and the fandom has put some people off but i don’t know of a single person who got to the true ending of undertale who didn’t love it to pieces. this is probably the best bang for your buck on switch unless you find one of these other titles on sale
okami is on switch and if you like adventure games it is BALLER. some misogyny included but it’s largely ignorable and fun as fuck. it was heavily inspired by zelda so if you like zelda you’ll almost certainly like okami
animal crossing is an amazing time sink if you haven’t tried it already. i’d tell you what it’s about but i’m pretty sure everyone on god’s green earth is sick of hearing about it by now. similar to that one is stardew valley (a farming sim, eerily addictive, played it when i had bronchitis and thought i was about to die to forget the 4-hour wait for medical care)
breath of the wild (open world/exploration) is in my top 5 zelda games and definitely one of the best games on the switch. hundreds of hours easily. worth every dime. link’s awakening is also an exploring/adventure game and the remake is soooo charming and cute, the world will suck you right in
cadence of hyrule is another zelda game, it’s a rhythm game with a light amount of music-based combat. i finished it in like 3 days so it’s kinda pricey for that playtime but i was head-bopping the whole time
i don’t have the mario classics yet but i got my switch for smash bros, which everyone loves, and i got mario kart 8 as a gift. if you’ve never played either series and like fighting/racing games you’ll probably enjoy yourself!
shovel knight is a cute little single player platformer. i had a lot of fun with it and really enjoyed the quirky story but it is HARD as fuck so just be warned going in. they counts your deaths in the credits and mine was in the like 200s
puzzle games: tetris 99 is free, but you can buy a single player mode. lumines was also a large portion of my childhood and teenhood
i played pac-man championship edition on xbox when it came out and it fucking rules
i have not played untitled goose game (i don’t know what genre this is, meme??) or ori and the blind forest (metroidvania platformer) myself yet, but i watched playthrus and wanna try them soo bad i’m like 99% sure they rule
spryo the dragon is on switch and i had a blast with the original version. i’m sure the remake is even better. ditto for skyrim, though i am told the switch port is buggy...but all elder scroll games are buggy; it’s part of the charm. if you like open world and all you have is a switch, better skyrim on the switch than no skyrim at all.
there are a number of final fanasties on switch. i absolutely love final fantasy ix! i have not personally played final fantasy vii but it is beloved the world over. final fantasy x and x-2 are also on switch and though i haven’t played them myself either i loved the story a LOT.
buy yourself a switch online membership if you can. for $20 you get access to the snes/nes library for a year and i can’t tell you how many gems there are in there. a link to the past, kirby superstar saga, dr. mario, the original legend of zelda, super mario brothers...it’s a really good fucking value actually
VERY IMPORTANT: in the nintendo e-shop there’s a section called “great deals.” i found a little shooter there called super bit blaster that i’ve wasted like ten hours on so far and it only cost me nine cents. it’s not deep and it’s not the best game i’ve ever played but it cost me NINE. CENTS. i paid like a penny for every hour i’ve whiled away on that thing. if it’s in the great deals section and it’s either free or under a dollar you have very little to lose by trying it out!

2019 VG Journal 3
Three years running! New year, more games old and new to waste my unlimited potential on! Once again the goal is to play 52 games before the end of the year. 52 games to average a game a week (since you know...there are 52 weeks in a year). But due to being a busy human being with adult responsibilities, a social life, pets and mostly not having it together all the time the one bone I throw myself is “Big (unbeatable) time sinks.” A great example of this is the game I’ve already been playing obsessively at the start of this year: Animal Crossing New Leaf. That game does not have a traditional beginning, middle, and end. In fact it just keeps going and going and there is no end. If I put over 10 hours into game like that or an online multiplayer only type game - then it’s counted at the end of the year as on of my 52 games. For instance I already put 20+ into ANCL for the start of this year -.-...so yeah...it counts. Here we go! I hope my 2019 is better than 2018 and I hope the games are even better!
*This list will be edited and redone as the year goes on*

January 6, 2020 - The 2019 Recap:
Without getting too much into 2019 itself - WHAT A GARBAGE YEAR FOR LIFE IN GENERAL. Glad that’s over. AS for the video games, it was a great transitional year for me to be able to catch up on a lot of stuff and continue to push off other titles I should be finishing before the end of the generation -.-.  Not counting my big unbeatable time sinks, I was able to complete 45 games across 10 different platforms. More interestingly is it was actually 12 different platforms as I played a gba title on my gamecube, and got the switch lite (transitioning from the Switch). I am pretty happy I was able to get my hands on so many consoles this year. This marks a new a record for myself! Of course this was no coincidence. Though it took significantly longer than expected we did move to a bigger place over here in California. This is not permanent or even where we want to be in the next year or two but I made sure to make this a comfy place for me where I have easy access to my stuff.
Tumblr media
My handhelds, and most video games are now easily accessible. The current generation systems funny enough are the games that are the most difficult to reach at the moment, but I digress.
I made a conscious decision to try and play less online focused games or games that didn’t have an end in sight. And I accomplished that goal by cutting that list almost entirely in half. THAT said...the Call of Duty that came out at the end of this year basically ruined that for me. For the first time in the history of me doing this list, I was on track or ahead this whole year. I was actually genuinely averaging almost a game or two a week! Then I got my new computer.

Then I started playing Modern Warfare. And I spent so much time in that game I almost considered putting it on my list twice. I played so much multiplayer that I almost didn’t reach 52 games this year! At the last minute I almost ruined my streak! But we made it. And I’m good for 3 years in a row now.
I usually don’t do this but before I end this I just want to say my games of 2019 were Ace Combat, Outer Wilds, Resident Evil 2, and Devil May Cry V. Outer Wilds and Ace Combat are necessities. If I made a proper list - they would both be number 1. Please go out and play these games!
And with that! Fuck this decade, let’s hope the next one is better! Welcome 2020!

So the Direct in Review:
Overwatch for Switch: meh. Nobody really asked for this.
Luigi's Mansion 3: I'm honestly excited for this one. Let's the hope the individual floors aren't just tiny boxes. I'm definitely looking forward to the pirate ship level. I do hope I have some cash around Halloween
Super Kirby Clash: it's alright I guess. Seems weird to have 4 Kirbys and not Dedede or Meta Knight but whatever
Trials of Mana HD: I kind of want it, but I never played the others.
Return of Obra Dinn: eh. It's been out on PC a while I think.
Little Town Hero: ima be real, I'm a bit sour at this game because they definitely took time away from SwSh to work on this, and it definitely shows because it does look good. More info is needed tho. Tobyfox was just hanging out with Nintendo I guess
Banjo in Smash: don't have smash, but I do love Sakurai's laid back approach to explaining Banjo and Spiral Mountain. Tobyfox kicking Sakurai's ass in Smash is hilarious to me. Now if only Microsoft showed as much love to Banjo as Sakurai did. Hmmmmm.
Terry in Smash: okay? Funny trailer, but I don't really care much. Maybe they'll add girl Terry for another skin for shits n giggles.
More Smash DLC: Byleth is definitely coming at some point, as is a pokemon character or Little Town Hero character. Gotta get that promotion in babey.
Link's Awakening: cute
DQXIS: y'all can't do this to me I ALREADY BEAT THE GAME ON THE PS4! You can't just add new story and essentially an entirely 2d remake of the game on a new system! My wallet hates you. Maybe they'll actually add the reorchestrated music this time around.
Tokyo Mirage Sessions:#FE: I do want this. I've very much been wanting this. I just haven't gotten it yet because I knew it'd be ported to Switch with more shit in it AND I WAS RIGHT. Also "See-ah-da"??? I thought it was "ky-ay-da"?
Deadly Premonition 1 port: neat
DP 2: I was JUST talking to my friends about a New Orleans trip around Halloween. Like WTF. Kinda neato but hopefully they can escape the uncanny valley from the first
Divinity, Original Sin 2 Def Edition: eh... ok?
Doom 64: someone needs to tell mister Beth Esda to shorten his speel. Just say Doom 64 for Switch, BAM, move on. Your speech ain't that important and neither are your weird hand movements
Rogue Company: as much as I like the idea of customization, its literally the same as Fortnite or any other fps released in the past 10 years.
Pokemon SwSh: I've got sour feelings at Game Freak and The Pokemon Company International for the mistreatment of their franchise, but I do like Camp and Cramaran, plus whatever that weird fish is. I am delighted to see customization improvements, and there's definitely enhanced animations: but not for for the pokemon. The player looks lively af, but the pokemon still rotate so stiffly. The currydex is... interesting. It does look delicious anyway but I would prefer if they just kept the simple Refresh feature from SM. Decent overall, but they need to show more improvement by next month to change my mind. Also... Polteageist... no. I do not want to drink your bodily fluids.
SNES ports with Rewind functionality: decent idea. Where's Earthbound?
Tetris 99: booooringggg
Mario & Sonic: okay look, when they first started this for the Wii, pretty much all fans agreed this wasn't the crossover we wanted. So why are we still doing this? Why not an actual cross over game with Adventure 2 and Odyssey gameplay to keep things simple? At the least, the 2d stuff is original.
Daemon X Machina: actually looks fun. I really want it.
Jedi Knight 2: so weird, but cool.
The Witcher 3: nothing new but impressive, moving on.
Ass Cred Rebel: Ass Flag and Rogue Ass: decent. I wonder if Freedom Cry will be included? 4 is definitely the best
Dauntless: interesting, if only it weren't just online.
Just Dance: look, another party game for friends I don't have.
GRID Autosport: meh
Farming Simulator 20: we're still doing this eh?
Ni no kuni: Wrath of the White Witch: shit yes, I actually want this.
NBA 2k20: boring just like every other crappy ea sport game, next
Call of Cthulu: interesting I guess. I wonder if this will have Labo VR or 3d rumble compatibility?
The Outer Worlds: neat
Devil May Cry 2: okay, I know there's probably a reason, but why is Nintendo glossing over 1's in favor of their sequels? I guess I get it if the first ones were bad but still. Neato tho.
Vampyr: this was kind of underwhelming to the point that I don't remember it at all
AC New Horizons: oh to be an AC fan. I wish I could get into these games. They look so appealing from the outside. I just don't handle non combat games that well. But hey, I know plenty of friends that will love this.
Xenoblade Chronicles def Edition: also another one I knew was coming eventually. Hopefully they include Japanese audio.
A thank you to @nickshutter for his guide to sort of help me remember these
Out of all of these, Luigi's Mansion 3, Ni no kuni, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, Daemon X Machina, and Xenoblade Chronicles interest me the most.
I'm finding Pokemon is TRYING to grab at me, but I'm still not even 70% sold on it and they have to announce some changes or proper information on Home before I change my mind.
Incidentally, Missing from this list but also coming to the Switch in a month or so: Digimon Cyber Sleuth 1 AND 2. Really good, check em out.
Also missing: Metroid, FE 3 Houses Expansion Pass info, BoTW 2, and a rumored Mario Odyssey thing I heard a vague rumor about.
Decent direct overall.

Nintendo Direct Feb 2019 BREAKDOWN
So, that direct was pretty okay right? If you missed it or even if you didn’t, I’m gonna be taking a look at everything announced and giving it a vague excitement rating! Enjoy!
Tumblr media
Super Mario Maker 2
Tumblr media
This was a pretty great way to kick off this direct. With the promise of a host of new features coming in this entry to build upon the first, including the introduction of slopes (finally) and a new texture pack based on Mario 3D World, I reckon this is definitely one to mark in the calendar. Mario Maker 2 is slated for a, gratefully soon, June 2019 release.
Excitement Rating: YEEHAW
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order
Tumblr media
The long awaited third entry in the MUA series, to the surprise of many, is in fact a Switch exclusive. For those who don’t know, this is a hack-and-slash fighting game, of course tied heavily to Marvel comics. This entry seems to be riding in off the back of Infinity War, with Thanos and the Black Order showcased as central villains. Honestly, this game looks like it could be fun, especially with friends, though I don’t think it’ll turn out to be anything special.
ER: Sure, why not!
BOX BOY! + BOX GIRL!
Tumblr media
This adorable little puzzle platformer is making its debut on Switch this spring, with the promise of local multiplayer and more levels than ever before. Looks to be a goodun for fans of cute, minimalist art design and box-based puzzles and the like.
ER: Cool! Those boxes can move!
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - Ver. 3.0
Tumblr media
Nintendo sort of slapped us in the face with a lovely, welcome announcement of a new Smash update! Oh boy! New features! And then they turn around and say they aren’t gonna tell us what they are.
Oh.
Kind of makes me question the point of putting this in the direct a little, but I’m sure whatever they’ll add will be cool! On top of that, a tentative release window for Joker was given (before the end of April this year) and we got a cheeky look at some of the new spicy amiibos, being Snake, Simon and the Pokemon Trainer lot.
ER: Yay?
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker Updates
Tumblr media
Here’s one that definitely caught me offguard, but I’m more than happy with it considering I just picked up the game. Part of the new Captain Toad content is free, adding in proper 2 player co-op where you can both play as Toad. The paid ‘special episode’ stuff struck me as a little odd, considering this game was already a Wii U port that’s now getting even more paid DLC. Regardless, it’s not too pricey and you can even pick up the first DLC course now, with the rest coming March 14.
ER: That’s cool!
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Tumblr media
This not-quite-Castlevania game could easily be mistaken for a knock off of that franchise, but seems to have some defining elements of its own. The art style is bold enough to make it unique and the game seems to have an interesting variety of puzzles and side quests to make this more than just a run of the mill 2D platformer. An obvious choice for those with a Castlevania shaped hole in their hearts.
ER: You go bouncy vampire lady
Dragon Quest Builders 2
Tumblr media
What is basically just Dragon Quest Minecraft with a story mode apparently, this oddly charming sandbox game was seemingly popular enough to warrant a sequel. And I won’t lie to you, it got me a little excited. As a fan of Dragon Quest its art style and general building-ness, I think I might have to pick this one up. And it’s got a cool retro map!
ER: I’m not excited, you are
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age: Definitive Edition
Tumblr media
In case you hadn’t guessed, I literally adore Dragon Quest. The bright colours, the developed characters, the expansive world, awesome monster designs, great soundtrack and lame sense of humour, it all just gets me. It just sort of sucks I already own this on the PS4, where I can’t access all this new content. Oof. But yeah, pick this up if you can. You won’t regret it if you’re a JRPG fan.
ER: More like echoes of an exclusive age amirite
Disney Tsum Tsum Festival
Tumblr media
Oh.
I won’t lie to you right now, nothing screams ‘soulless’ to me more than small Disney plushes with all the personality taken from them being stuck into totally random minigames. Don’t get me wrong, I love Disney (mostly through Kingdom Hearts but that’s besides the point) but I don’t think this elicited much excitement in anyone.
ER: I guess this exists, huh?
Starlink: Battle for Atlas - Spring Update
Tumblr media
This was another one that surprised me. Considering how mind meltingly badly Starlink bombed, partly down to its odd reliance on the whole ‘toys to life’ craze that died out in 2013, I really didn’t think there’d be any further support for the game and they’d just sort of slip it under the rug. But nope, we’ve got some more Switch exclusive missions involving some more Star Fox characters, as well as the introduction of Wolf’s buddies. Honestly, I think Nintendo needs to do themselves a favour and just release a new Star Fox game.
ER: Great, if for some reason you bought this!
Rune Factory 4 Special & Rune Factory 5
Tumblr media
Here’s a series I’d literally never heard of until last Wednesday, but the only way I can describe it from what I’ve seen is it looks to be a cross between Animal Crossing and kind of also Dragon Quest. You cook stuff, you farm stuff, you fight things and you can get married if you want, so definitely cool if you’re a fan of the series. But also cool if you’re someone who wished Animal Crossing was a bit more JRPG. Alongside the announcement of a remastered Rune Factory 4 later this year, as well as confirmation of Rune Factory 5 sometime in the future.
ER: Cool! Plants and stuff!
Oninaki
Tumblr media
An action RPG with an intriguing premise and a rich, dark colour scheme, Oninaki seems very eager to set itself apart from other JRPGs on the market and still manages to stand out just a bit, even in a direct that’s basically been packed with JRPGs. Oninaki explores themes of reincarnation and grief, following the story of one grey-haired dude saving lost souls from a place called the Upside Down the Beyond to stop them from turning into monsters. Another one to add to the list if you like edgy RPGs!
ER: Edgy and cool
Yoshi’s Crafted World
Tumblr media
Another update for this adorably cardboard entry into the long running Yoshi series, we’re finally getting close to actually being able to play it. Nintendo showcased some of the more interesting variants of gameplay, with the use of rafts, cars and planes definitely making this seem that there’s some substance here to go with the style. Alongside this, a demo released on the eshop so go play that if you haven’t already and decide if it’s for you!
ER: Wow, this game has a Labo costume! I’ll definitely grind for that!
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Tumblr media
Finally some more info about Nintendo’s latest instalment in their anime Game of Thrones series Fire Emblem, we got a big ol infodump about some of the stuff to do with the game. While the video itself will explain everything better than I can, this time players will be able to interact with three kingdoms and three main protagonists, all of this centralising around one academy the game is set within. Overall, this game certainly looks interesting to play, but one I’m not quite sure I’ll be picking up just yet. Basically, if you’re unfamiliar with the games but love a tactical RPG, this one is a no brainer.
ER: Edelgard’s design is pretty cool. If one of them has to get into Smash, I hope it’s her.
Tetris 99
Tumblr media
The game many have been calling Tetris Battle Royale, this is the very first Nintendo Switch Online exclusive offering and it’s totally free if you’re a member. It’s Tetris and you have to win against 98 other people, also playing Tetris. Nice!
ER: Tetris block for Smash
Dead by Daylight
Tumblr media
As a game I got for free through Playstation Plus, it should be fairly obvious that this port isn’t one that excites me greatly, especially after seeing the quality of the graphics in the trailer the direct showed us. While the concept of an online match with several survivors and one killer sounds good on paper, it seems as if the quality of this port may leave a lot to be desired. But still, this could still only be early development footage and we really have no idea how it’ll look by the end.
ER: Tentative
Deltarune
Tumblr media
Undertale is one of my favourite games of all time, so of course it excited me to find out I’d finally be able to play the sort of sequel, Deltarune, which Toby Fox has taken in the interesting direction of splitting the game into chapters. The first of these chapters will be free (yay I like free) and it certainly seems like the same abstract sense of humour and charm present in Undertale has been carried over to this sequel. Definitely one to watch.
ER: Always excited about cartoon doggo
Daemon X Machina
Tumblr media
This mech-fighter has been floating around in various Nintendo directs for a fair while now and it’s encouraging to see the game come close to release. In a commendable move, the producer of the game has offered a free demo of the game allowing you to pilot your own custom mech and experience a boss battle in the demo known as ‘Prototype Missions’. The aim of this to gain feedback from potential players in order to make the game as good as it can be, which is amazing! It’s honestly a bit of a dream world where every game developer and publisher is as open and transparent as these guys, so kudos to them. As well as this, the game looks pretty heckin’ fun so it’s definitely worth picking up the demo off the eshop and giving these guys your feedback!
ER: Big ol’ robots hell yeah
GRID Autosport
Tumblr media
As of yet, the Switch has lacked a realistic racing game. Enter Grid Autosport, which seems to be packed with a variety of cars, tracks and game modes, including all DLC from the original release of the game. Not one for me, but I’m sure there’s plenty of Switch owners out there whose racing fix isn’t quite satisfied by Mario Kart.
ER: V big if ur a car person
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
Tumblr media
This game was notably created in collaboration with neurologists and those who experience psychosis in order to properly portray the main character and her mental health struggles. Following the quest of Senua as she fights to save the soul of her dead lover, this game created a huge wave through the industry when it first launched and won major awards for its artistic design and performance. While this isn’t one I’ve had the chance to try yet, it certainly looks as if it provides a brilliant, emotional experience from beginning to end.
ER: A lot
Mortal Kombat 11
Tumblr media
This was one everyone basically already knew about, but this direct gave us a reminder of the release date and various features such as custom characters. For fans of this long running, brutal fighting game, get April 23 in ur brains.
ER: Cool
Unravel Two
Tumblr media
This adorable puzzle platformer sees you and, optionally, a friend take control of two little creatures made of yarn as they navigate a colourful world and help each other pass various obstacles. For those fans of platformers like the Yoshi series, Unravel is definitely one to consider.
ER: Cool
Assassin’s Creed III Remastered
Tumblr media
This is the iconic stealth fighting series Assassin’s Creed’s first outing on Switch, but if this footage is anything to go by, it’s not looking brilliant. While this once again could be put down to unfinished development, the first look at a game is often the most important, and a slow frame rate shown during the direct could mean this game isn’t what fans want it to be.
ER: Tentative
Final Fantasy Release Dates
Tumblr media
For fans of the legendary and slightly intimidating JRPG series, several games in the series both new and old will be coming to the Switch in 2019:
Final Fantasy VII on March 26th
Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon EVERY BUDDY! on March 20th
Final Fantasy IX is out now!
ER: Cloud is my favourite twink
Astral Chain
Tumblr media
Admittedly, at a first glance, this title in a brand new franchise didn’t particularly excite me. But after having another look, I can definitely see where all the hype is coming from. This looks to be a hack-and-slash sort of action RPG with all the edgy story elements and setpieces of that ever so popular steampunk genre that players seem to love these days. With all these mechs, explosions and edgy voiceovers, it makes me think that Xenoblade Chronicles and Deus Ex had some kind of torrid love affair. On top of this, with a dev team that has Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101 and NieR: Automata under their belt, this is a game that will almost certainly impress when it finally comes out on August 30. Platinum Games might just have another winner here.
ER: Big yes
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
Tumblr media
oKAY, let’s be real, this is the one that really knocked it out of the park. At least for me it did. As the final reveal, this made me scream a little tiny bit. I think we’d all heard the rumours of a 2D Zelda coming to Switch, but I was highly skeptical to say the least. But a wonderfully charming and artistically bloody P E R F EC T remake of Link’s Awakening?? HHHHHH. They even kept all the Mario enemies for some reason! Oh boy, whenever they release this in 2019 apparently really can’t come soon enough.
ER: AAAAAAAAAAAAA
That was all for this direct! I hope you enjoyed my silly, unplanned breakdown of all the cool things that happened. Til the next direct!
Oh and if you’ve got a craving for more game news, be sure to check back on my blog March 1st for the second ‘issue’ (lol) of my monthly viddy game mag!
Stay hydrated my dudes.

30 Days of Smash
Tumblr media
On my Twitter i was filling all this in for the last month of hype before Smash Ultimate. It's out tomorrow so I'm gonna post all my answers from Twitter here!
Tumblr media
30 Days Left. Favorite Mario character to play as? BOWSER! He brings the power and I'm all about hitting hard :D I especially love the new dropkick he picked up recently and his changed running animation. He's just fierce! Also, a 10/10 dad
Tumblr media
29 Days Left. Favorite Zelda character to play as? SHEIK! I just think she's awesome. She's a ninja assassin! What's not to like? The new moves she was given too, the bomb and bouncing fish, I enjoy those. Sheik is just cool
Tumblr media
28 Days Left. Favorite Pokemon to play as? That is gonna go to Greninja, no question! Another smash day another ninja, what are the odds haha. completely unexpected Smash 4 newcomer. I got back into Pokemon with X and Y and I love Greninja, he came at a perfect time!
Tumblr media
27 Days Left. Favorite Ultimate Newcomer? Simon Belmont for sure! I'm not super experience in Castlevania, played only a few games but everything about his reveal and just him as a video game character has me super excited to play him!
Tumblr media
26 Days Left. Favorite Echo Fighter? Goin with Dark Samus cause of how unexpected she was. It's super cool that Metroid has gone from having kinda 1 character (as both are indeed samus) to now having 3. That's rad. And Dark Samus, she just looks cool!
Tumblr media
25 Days Left. Favorite Fire Emblem fighter? Easy! It's mah boi the all powerful radiant hero Ike! Brute force is my thing and he has that in spades!
Tumblr media
24 Days Left. Favorite Fighter from another series? Well that'll go to Shulk. He is currently the only Xenoblade rep (hopefully that changes) but he is another fighter I greatly enjoy playing as and he's a great character from one of the best games of all time!
Tumblr media
23 Days Left. Favorite Assist Trophy? THE BLACK KNIGHT! I'm so happy we're finally getting more worthwhile Fire Emblem content. I was super stoked just to see the Killing Edge, but one of Daein's Four Riders? Awesome. And he looks so strong! Is perfect!
Tumblr media
22 Days Left. Most useful or favorite Pokemon in Ultimate? No one of them really sticks out to me as my favorite...a lot are really reliable. Think I'm gonna give it to Keldeo for this one. He has crazy range and he is relentless!
21 Days Left. Favorite stage in Ultimate? There are WAY too many stages to just pick one favorite. I mean, THERE ARE SO MANY! But I remember the Dream Land GBA stage in 3DS and being SO HAPPY to play on it, I'm so ecstatic that its back. That Kirby game was my childhood!
20 Days Left. Favorite Song in the Smash Bros Series? That is a ridiculous question. Nigh impossible to answer. There are a lot of good tunes but Imma take it back to Brawl with the rock awesomeness that is Tabuu's theme!
19 Days Left. Favorite alternate. Again a lot i like but i gotta give it to Mario's stars and stripes. It's just so good XD
18 Days Left. Smash 64 "main" Ah yes. Back in the days when Ocarina of Time dominated my gaming life! The Hero of Time, Link was my go to and to this day he's one I still enjoy playing!
17 Days Left. Melee guy. Well for the gamecube days the character I stuck to the most was still the Hero of Time, Link. No one could really pull me away though I greatly enjoyed Falco and Marth too
16 Days Left. Brawl character I played the most as eh? That was mah boi IKE! To this day I'm so surprised how unsurprised? I was he got into Brawl. I don't remember being super shocked. I got into Fire Emblem prior Brawl and I LOVE Radiance and Dawn. Ike in smash? Rad!
15 days left. My Smash 4 boy is SHULK!! Most wanted newcomer at the time and infinitely happy he's in Smash!! Woooo!
14 Days Left. Least used / most disliked fighter. Jigglypuff easily. There is no valid reason for it to still be here. And when he was revealed, dark pit. Still think he's a dumb addition
13 Days Left. Favorite Final Smash. I'm a giant Xenoblade nerd so the more Xeno the better. And Shulk bringing his crew in for the smackdown is too good!
12 Days Left. Most disliked or least useful Final Smash Peach's simply cause it doesn't do anything. Also Jigglypuff and ice climbers smashes. Just boring really.
11 Days Left. Favorite Smash minigame. Huh. Tough. I always did appreciate the original break the targets and board the platforms. Really challenging stuff!
10 Days Left. Favorite Smash item. The assist trophy. Such a Cool idea bringing in other video game characters for aid. So many cool peeps out there!
9 days left. Character you'd most like as an assist trophy. Never really thought about this. Since we got more FE assist trophies I say Xenoblade. Someone not yet in like Sharla Reyn or Melia
8 Days Left. Character I'd like to see as an echo fighter? No idea. We aren't getting anymore echoes so it doesn't really matter. I got nothing for this. I've failed you all!
7 Days Left. A DLC newcomer I'd want? Easy. Rex and Pyra! On the eve of Xenoblade 2's anniversary! I want the bestest otp of 2017/2018 of the best game of those years. It's that good!
6 Days Left. Who do I expect to play the most as in Smash Ultimate? Most likely Shulk since I'm a Xenoblade obsessed nut and Ike comin in after that cause the Radiant games are the best FE games. MONADO BOI AND HERO OF THE BLUE FLAMES
5 Days Left. Assist trophy I'd like to see as a fighter? That'd be Lyndis. Ever since Brawl where there were only 2 FE peeps s on the roster. She's a great character (betterthanallthe3dtrash) and would actually give some origin variety given again, 4 3ds characters.
4 Days Left. Most unlikely yet desired newcomer? TETRIS! I say it a lot. Very unlikely. Not so much personally desired but i think it'd be really funny in the best way
3 Days Left. Very first Smash Bros memory. I guess that would be just...playing Smash 64 with my sisters. Making up stories going from fight to fight and pretending blue Fox was Falco. It was a simpler time.
2 Days Left. Greatest smash memory? Idk how great but my first 4 man 99 stock smash. I did it on a whim in Smash 64. 4 DKs in kongo jungle. It took forever. But as the lives fell and it narrowed down. I realized how much time i truly spent XD. I've done it in every smash since
ONE. DAY. LEFT. FAVORITE FIGHTER EVER? SHULK! SHULK IS BESTEST!
Smash is tomorrow y'all. Let's all have some fun!

The Free Cheese Game of the Year 2020
This year, we’re changing a bit of how our awards are chosen and announced. We’re limiting the entire process to a single, shorter episode. We’ve worked behind the scenes using a spreadsheet and some math, with a bit of wiggling one way or another to determine the winners of each category.
As we read through each category, we’ll name the winner and two runners up. Then, we’ll share some of our experiences with each game and why it deserved the award.
We’re going to spend a few minutes throughout the episode to celebrate some of the games that stuck with us the most in 2020. These might not have been released in 2020, but they meant something to us when we played them. In between rounds of award winners, we’ll each share a game that meant something to us and why.
When we reach Game of the Year, we will read our current list of nominees and deliberate the winner as we would in previous years, eventually crowning a winner.
Out of Time
While we found ourselves with more time to play games this year, we still have games that we missed out on playing. For one reason or another the games we nominate slipped through the cracks. The award goes to the game that we wish we would have played and will hopefully be talking about throughout the next year.
Tumblr media
Winner: Spelunky 2
Runners Up: Nioh 2, Paper Mario: The Origami King
Favorite Industry Moment
One thing that has continually brought us together are those times in the video game industry where developers and publishers get to show off what they have been creating.
While 2020 was a change in the way we typically received video game news, we saw companies find new ways to reach us and we were able to share excitement and hope for something new.
Tumblr media
Winner: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 Reveal
Runners Up: Open World Navigation Map Reveal for Halo Infinite, Demon’s Souls Remake Announcement
2020’s 2019 Game of the Year
As we are highlighting even more this year than previous years, we play a lot more than just what was released in a single year and often find ourselves catching up with something from the year before.
While last year, we never landed on a winner, we found ourselves with quite a bit of 2019’s games to choose from this year.
Tumblr media
Winner: Ring Fit Adventure
Runners Up: Tetris 99, Untitled Goose Game
Retrospective #1
2020 was the perfect year to get lost in something. We each felt the pull of exploration and a want for discovery, and we each found our own answers to satisfy the need.
Tumblr media
Metroid: Other M
Dark Souls
Half-Life/Black Mesa
Best Xbox Game
Microsoft managed to transition into a new generation of consoles with ease and Xbox Game Pass let us stay up with everything published by the first-party. This year continued to exemplify why Xbox Game Pass is essential for Xbox owners.
Tumblr media
Winner: Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Runners Up: Phantasy Star Online 2, Tetris Effect Connected
Best Multiplayer
Since we played our first game we have found a way to share it with others, even when it wasn’t designed to do so. This award is for the game that did something special to unite us, for the game that found a way to get us playing together.
Tumblr media
Winner: Trackmania
Runners Up: Phasmophobia, Deep Rock Galactic
Best DLC/Expansion
Downloadable content, expansions, and updates are a regular part of video games today. Thanks to post-game support, the games we love the most can get even better. Some games turn around entirely and become something we never thought they would. This award is for the piece of content that made the biggest impact on us in 2020.
Tumblr media
Winner: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate x Sephiroth
Runners Up: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate x Minecraft, Pokémon Sword and Shield: The Isle of Armor
Retrospective #2
In a console release year, it’s strange that we didn’t have a racing game to test drive new consoles with. Two were announced, but without release dates. Instead, we explored some of racing’s past to see how the genre can change, and we looked at racing with a new perspective.
Tumblr media
Daytona USA
Motorsport Manager
F-Zero X
Best PlayStation Game
With the end of one of its most successful generations, PlayStation was home to so many exclusives that took advantage of the years spent on with the hardware. Games on PlayStation 4 in 2020 were often long in development and finally came to us just as we looked beyond to the next generation.
Tumblr media
Winner: Final Fantasy VII Remake
Runners Up: 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Persona 5 Royal
Best Ongoing Game
More than a single update or piece of content, video games have the chance to live. We all have the one game that we keep coming back to, and this award celebrates the games that remain fresh and continue to offer reasons for us to return.
Tumblr media
Winner: Call of Duty
Runners Up: Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Rocket League
Most Surprising
This award is for the game that we had no idea we wanted. In some cases, our nominees were first announced and released in the same year where others simply caught us off guard with what they ended up doing upon release.
Tumblr media
Winner: Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2

Retrospective #3
2020 was a year where we were able to say “What was that game?” We spent time with relics of the past otherwise forgotten to history, got lost in a world through another lens, and finally stepped into the games that got away.

Best Nintendo Game
Nintendo was different this year than I think any of us had anticipated. Listening back through our predictions, you can hear what we expected from Nintendo in 2020 and seeing a smaller year for Nintendo was a bit of a surprise. Even with some absences from the release calendar, Nintendo celebrated the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., released a thirty year old Fire Emblem in the West for the first time, and even snuck out a new Game & Watch model.

Winner: Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Runners Up: Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition
Most Anticipated
Suffice it to say, 2020’s release calendar is a lot different than we or the developers making the games anticipated it would be. A lot of what we were excited to play slipped into 2021, to the point where new consoles launched without the one. Rather than grant an award to a single game, we’re instead going to share three games each that we’re most looking forward to in 2021.

The Best Nintendo Switch Controllers We've Tried So Far

The Best Nintendo Switch Controllers We've Tried So Far
Tumblr media
Since shortly after the Nintendo Switch‘s launch, I’ve been on the hunt for new Switch controllers. It’s a versatile little console, allowing for a wide range of different controller options, from playing with your PS4 and Xbox One controller to pads that resemble the classic controllers of the past. The Switch Pro controller is an obvious and great choice, but it’s also expensive, and in my experience, the D-Pad leaves a lot to be desired.
Thankfully, there are a ton of options from third-party companies like 8Bitdo and PDP that help account for personal preference while also introducing new features not found in first-party Nintendo Switch controllers. They aren’t all winners, but I have tested and identified some solid options worth considering if you need something a little different at a more affordable price.
We’ll keep this article updated as we test new controllers, adapters, and more. In the meantime, read on for an overview of the best Nintendo Switch controllers we’ve tried and can vouch for. Note that all pricing indicated below is subject to change–Amazon slashes the price on these products regularly, so you may see a discount when clicking through that we haven’t listed here.
Quick look: The best Nintendo Switch controllers we’ve tested
Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
The best first-party Switch controller
Tumblr media
The Good:
The best ergonomics of any controller I’ve used
Buttons are satisfying to press
Features NFC/Amiibo support, HD rumble, and motion controls
The Bad:
D-Pad is prone to incorrect inputs
$70 price tag is a bit steep
First off, we can’t talk about the best Nintendo Switch controllers on the market without talking about Nintendo’s first-party option, the Switch Pro controller. It’s a great pad with very few faults. For me, it has the best ergonomics among Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony’s first-party controllers. It’s the perfect size for my large hands, and the triggers are shaped just right for resting fingers. The face buttons feel good to press; the +, -, Home, and Screenshot buttons click wonderfully; and the analog sticks have a good amount of tension. The one problem I have with the Pro Controller is the D-Pad. It’s prone to incorrect inputs, which is most noticeable when playing puzzle games like Tetris 99 or fighting games like Mortal Kombat 11. This usually happens when you press a direction on the pad, but you’re a little off-center, causing an input in the wrong direction. It’s not something that breaks the experience completely, but when I’m playing a game that relies particularly heavy on the D-Pad, I always opt for a different controller.
The Pro Controller also boasts a lot of features that most third-party controllers rarely include. This includes NFC/Amiibo support, HD rumble, and motion controls. These things aren’t required for the vast majority of games, but every now and then, a certain utilization of them can put a smile on your face–HD rumble is used excellently in Super Mario Odyssey, for example. However, the Pro Controller’s price tag is also $70 USD, which is more expensive than both the DualShock 4 and latest Xbox One controller. There’s no doubt the Pro Controller is an excellent pad, but when there are great options at cheaper prices, it’s hard to justify buying a second, third, and/or fourth for your friends to use.

8Bitdo Wireless Bluetooth Adapter
The best way to use PS4 and Xbox One controllers on the Switch
Tumblr media
The Good:
Enables use of a DualShock 4, Bluetooth-enabled Xbox One, Wii U Pro, Wiimote, DualShock 3, and any compatible 8Bitdo controller
Easy to set up
The Bad:
Some games can cause abnormal vibration, which requires firmware updates to fix
Can’t wake up the Switch from Sleep Mode
The first time I plugged the 8Bitdo Bluetooth adapter into my Switch’s dock, it felt like black magic. I was using my DualShock 4 on a Nintendo platform, hitting Circle when it asked for A, Cross when it asked for B. And when it asked for X? You guessed it: Triangle. There was definitely a period of getting used to what buttons I should be pressing for each input the Switch requested, but once this passed, the adapter proved an excellent way to use not just the DualShock 4, but a wide array of Bluetooth-enabled controllers that don’t already connect to the Switch directly.
Of course, any controller you’ll use with this adapter won’t include features like HD rumble, motion controls, or Amiibo support. These losses are negligible for the vast majority of experiences, especially when using your favorite Bluetooth controller is the trade-off. One downside to this adapter, however, is a rumble issue that crops up with certain games. Most recently, I’ve experienced this with Fire Emblem: Three Houses, where your controller will vibrate abnormally even if you turn off rumble in the Switch’s system settings. This issue has been fixed for games like Splatoon 2 and Crash Bandicoot: N Sane Trilogy, though this requires you to plug the adapter into a computer to update the firmware.

8Bitdo SN30 Pro Plus
The best Switch controller for customization
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Good:
Extensive button mapping and macro customization
Adjustable dead-zones for analog sticks and triggers
Customizable rumble functionality
Removable, rechargeable battery
Allows for the use of two AA batteries
Also doubles as an excellent option for classic games
The Bad:
The 8Bitdo SN30 Pro Plus is one of the more exciting Switch controllers. Not only does it feature a design inspired by the SNES, it also features extensive customization for button mapping, analog sticks, trigger inputs, and vibration adjustments. It allows you to swap button inputs, invert the X and Y axis on your analog sticks, and more. You can even create macros of up to 18 inputs. All of this customization must be done on a computer, but 8Bitdo’s customization software is a breeze to use. The one downside is that there are no extra buttons or paddles on the controller, so the remapping is restricted to swapping buttons.
My personal favorite thing about this controller is the fact that it includes a removable, rechargeable battery and also allows for disposable batteries. As someone who is currently sitting next to a box of dead PS3 controllers, I’m happy to know there is a great alternative to the Switch’s Pro controller that I’ll be able to use long after its rechargeable battery dies.

PDP Faceoff Deluxe+ Controller
The best budget Switch controller
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Good:
Great D-pad
Excellent ergonomics
Remappable paddles
Audio port works great for voice chat-enabled games and listening with headphones
The Bad:
Can hit paddles by accident in some cases
Can’t wake the Switch up from Sleep Mode
When I learned the Switch had a Pro controller alternative that included an audio port, boasted remappable paddles, and only cost $25, I didn’t expect much in the way of quality. The PDP Faceoff Deluxe+ wired controller exceeded my expectations and is now one of my favorites to use with the Switch. Holding it, it feels very similar to Nintendo’s Pro controller. I don’t think any of these controllers beat the Pro controller in pure ergonomics, but this PDP pad comes close. The general shape is the same, but the sticks and triggers come up a touch higher. I like the raised height of the triggers, but I feel like they could have been reshaped a bit to better fit the natural curve of your fingers.
Nevertheless, this hardly ruins the experience. The inclusion of remappable paddles is a fantastic addition. You can map any button to these paddles, and I found it incredibly useful for games that assigned sprint to a face button. In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I’m able to sprint, jump, and glide, all while controlling the camera with my thumb firmly planted on the right stick. Of course, this can present some problems in certain games. When switching from Breath of the Wild to Super Mario Maker 2, I would instinctively squeeze the paddle while making some jumps. And unfortunately, there’s only one configuration profile and no way to turn the paddles off, so if you don’t want to use them, you’ll have to go through the short process of mapping them to each other–this makes it so there’s no input when pressing them. It’s a minor issue, but an annoying one nonetheless.
Thankfully, the PDP Faceoff Deluxe+ feels good enough to use to deal with the occasional accidental button press. Its analog sticks have a similar tension to the Pro controller’s, and it has a great D-Pad. The 3.5mm audio port is a good option for voice chat in supported games (e.g. Fortnite), though I spent most of my time using the port to listen through my favourite pair of headphones. This works really well, with the ability to control your volume on the controller itself and within the Switch’s menu. And with its wired connection, you don’t have to worry about its battery dying. Because that wired connection powers the Switch, however, you won’t be able to turn the console on from Sleep Mode–you’ll have to hit the Power button on your docked Switch before starting to play. As long as you’re okay these few inconveniences, then I can wholeheartedly recommend the Faceoff Deluxe+.

Hori D-Pad Joy-Con
Best Switch controllers for handheld mode
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Good:
The best, most convenient option for a D-Pad in handheld mode
Very comfortable for games that excel with a D-Pad
The Bad:
Restricted to handheld use only
Incompatible with most cases and grips
Perhaps the most disappointing thing about the Switch is the lack of a proper D-Pad on its left Joy-Con. It’s not an automatic dealbreaker, with games like Breath of the Wild and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate not utilizing the D-Pad for anything super demanding, but when the situation calls for it, the Hori D-Pad Joy-Con feels a lot more precise and comfortable when playing in handheld mode.
The D-Pad on Hori’s Joy-Con is softer than what I usually look for, but it’s hard to deny just how pleasant the experience is. I didn’t realize how much I missed a D-Pad until I used this to play games like Mortal Kombat 11, Tetris 99, and Super Mario Maker 2. These games, as well as many others, have since been a lot more enjoyable in handheld mode.
There are a few things that are important to note, however. First off, this Joy-Con can’t be used wirelessly, so you’re restricted to using it in handheld mode. Secondly, it’s incompatible with most cases and grips. This is because the latch button protrudes out further than Nintendo’s official Joy-Cons. I took a pair of scissors and cut out a space for it on my cheap Orzly grip case, but I likely won’t be doing the same to my more expensive accessories.

8bitdo M30 Bluetooth
The best classic controller on Nintendo Switch
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Good:
Fantastic D-Pad and ergonomics
Connects directly to Nintendo Switch
Also compatible with Windows, Mac, Android, and Raspberry Pi
The Bad:
Not suitable for all games
8Bitdo’s M30 controller might just be one of my favorite pads ever. As a Sega Genesis kid, I’ve always held a special place in my heart for the six-button controller, which is what the M30 emulates and improves on. Its ergonomics have been shaped differently to make it more comfortable to hold than the Sega original, and the D-Pad is by far my favorite of any 8Bitdo controller. Classic titles, platformers, and fighting games are the obvious choice for the M30, but I’ve also found myself enjoying Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with it. It’s definitely not going to work with every game, especially those that rely on a second analog stick, but it’s a controller I’ll always go to if it’s possible to do so.

8Bitdo N30 Bluetooth
The best NES controller for Nintendo Switch
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Good:
Better shoulder buttons than the subscription-exclusive NES Joy-Cons
Includes a Home button
Connects directly to Nintendo Switch
Also compatible with retro receivers and USB adapters
The Bad:
Not suitable for all games
The 8Bitdo N30 isn’t going to be for everyone. It’s an NES-style controller that is great for very specific games, like everything in the Switch Online NES library and very few others. I prefer the NES controller’s shape and button layout for that console’s games, but in trying to find other uses for the N30, I was largely unsuccessful. Even modern Tetris games like Tetris 99 and Puyo Puyo Tetris require more than the D-Pad and B and A buttons–the extra two face buttons on the N30 are restricted to Turbo. The N30 includes shoulder buttons for L and R, which does extend the number of games it can be used with (e.g. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe), but the options are still limited.
I mostly use my N30 in conjunction with a retro receiver that lets me use it with real NES hardware and RetroUSB’s AVS. It’s my new favorite pad for that console. It’s also an excellent option for the Switch, but it’s not necessary to enjoy any game, NES or not. However, if you are looking for that very specific NES experience, I can wholeheartedly recommend the N30. Nintendo’s own NES Switch controllers are good, but they have inferior shoulder buttons and need to be charged the same way as your Joy-Cons–not to mention, the Nintendo Switch Online subscription that’s required before you can even purchase them. With all this considered, the N30 is perfect for the job.

8Bitdo SN30 Bluetooth
The best SNES controller for Nintendo Switch
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Good:
Connects directly to Nintendo Switch
Comes with a retro receiver for SNES use
Also compatible with USB adapters
The Bad:
Not suitable for select games
The SN30 Pro Plus discussed earlier might be the best Switch controller on this list, and with its SNES-style layout, it’s great for classic games. However, if you’re looking for something a bit more authentic to the SNES experience, then the basic SN30 is your best alternative. Like both the M30 and N30, it doesn’t work with every game, but there are plenty of great options with the Switch’s excellent selection of platformers and fighting games. And if a recent FCC filing indicates anything, we could be seeing SNES games on the Switch in the future.
The SN30 also comes with a retro receiver that can be plugged into a SNES. If you still have a Super Nintendo–or an Analogue Super NT–then this is an awesome option to play classic games on that console. And as a bonus, this retro receiver can also be connected via USB, as long as you have an extra USB-C cable attached.

GamesBeat editor Jeff Grubb’s top 20 games of 2019
We’ve had a lot of really good years in gaming recently, but 2019 is at the top of the list for me. I get that not everyone feels that way. For me, however, I got to play so many games I was looking forward to. And then several other games caught me by surprise.
So sure, we didn’t get the Gods of War or Red Dead Redemptions, but … I don’t even like those games. What do I like? Well, how about these 20 games right here?
20. Untitled Goose Game
Goose is the breakout video game of the year. It has the most viral buzz, and that’s for a good reason: It’s fun to watch. I also enjoy playing it, but it’s significantly better as a game you play for others. It’s a joy to do something silly and make everyone in your family laugh. And Untitled Goose Game is great at creating those moments.
19. Resident Evil 2
I’m not a Resident Evil guy. I adored Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 1 Remake on the GameCube, but I had never even played the original Resident Evil 2. Thankfully, Capcom gave me a chance to go back to this game in an exquisite reimagining. While I didn’t find the game all that frightening, it’s still fun to work my way through the Raccoon City police department while avoiding the indestructible Mr. X.
18. Ape Out
youtube
Ape Out is a game where you you help an ape get out. As a ferocious and unjustly imprisoned gorilla, you can smash enemies like the Hulk or use them as human shields. And your goal is just to run to the exit on every stage. But the game’s top-down view, simple art, and dynamic percussion soundtrack make it one of the most stylish games of the year as well.
17. The Outer Worlds
I’m a fan of the recent Fallout games, but I’ve always wanted a similar game that took place in space. The Outer Worlds definitely delivers that. It might not have all of the interlocking systems of a Bethesda RPG, but it does well with its slimmer scope.
16. Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey
Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a bizarre and challenging game. It has you guiding a lineage of primates through eons of time and evolutionary progress. If that sounds like an obtuse, high-concept idea, that’s because it is, but that’s also why I love it.
15. A Short Hike
A Short Hike is exactly what its name suggests. It’s a short game where you hike through a woodsy terrain. But it is so charming and packed with different little things to do that it feels much bigger than its 2-hour playtime. I also love the charming, aliased visual style that is like Animal Crossing on PS1.
14. Disco Elysium
I haven’t played enough Disco Elysium to put it much higher on my list than this. But even after only a handful of hours, I can see why people are so enamored with it. Its reactive world is always aware of the context players are working from. And its mystery is genuinely interesting. But the best part is the conversation system where almost all of the game happens. Even as someone who has never really gotten into an RPG like this, it’s winning me over.
13. Shovel Knight: King of Cards
Shovel Knight is such an accomplishment. Developer Yacht Club Games has packed it with tons of content. And King of Cards is the exclamation point on years of work. This is a completely new release, with excellent platforming mechanics and a full card game. I haven’t finished it, but I keep sneaking in more time with it when I should be playing other games.
12. Tetris 99
Tetris continues to prove itself as one of the most resilient games of all time. It can come back year after year, and it did just that with Tetris 99. Despite Tetris Effect ending up on my list last year, Tetris as a battle royale was just as fun and impressive. I’m probably going to play different versions of Tetris for the rest of my life, and I’m OK with that.
11. The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for Game Boy is my favorite game of all time. That makes this near one-to-one remake for the Switch difficult for me to assess. It’s still that game with some new visuals and an improved interface. And while it’s dense with discoveries, it is also simple. I also can’t help that I prefer the look of the original black-and-white game. Still, I played through this version back-to-back when I got it for review, and it’s still excellent. It’s also the first Zelda I would give to any kid looking to get into the series.
10. Factory Town
Factory Town was an obsession of mine this year that I wish I could have given into more than I did. This is just one entry in the growing automated-production genre where you must design a world to process resources into currency you can spend to expand your processing capabilities. You have a lot of options in this category, but I’m glad I went with Factory Town. It’s in 3D, so you have to deal with elevations. But it’s also streamlined enough that I felt like I could always deal with any issues. And now I want to go back and check on my town.
9. Trials Rising
youtube
Trials Rising is exactly what I want from the motorcycle-platforming franchise. It has excellent courses that are exciting to run over and over, and it has a wild and irreverent tone and sense of humor. It definitely has some issues with progression that are going to turn a lot of people off, but it’s a game I’m still going back to regularly as a Trials fan.
8. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Bloodstained came out, and it is great. This is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night spiritual successor from former Castlevania director Koji Igarashi, and it lived up to that legacy. It has fun, fast-paced combat, great exploration, and a bizarre roster of enemies.
7. Luigi’s Mansion 3
I wish Nintendo would’ve released this earlier in October. It came out on Halloween, and I didn’t have time to play it. And then suddenly it was November, and the timing didn’t feel right. But I’m playing through it now, and I’m enjoying it. That’s the right word, too. It is nice to play with really satisfying vacuuming action and incredible animations. But I hope that I end up loving it.
6. Super Mario Maker 2
youtube
Super Mario Maker 2 should be higher, but Nintendo is not great about some key things. Mostly, it doesn’t integrate your Switch friends list to make it easy to track your friends’ creations or their leaderboard times. But the game is still excellent — especially after its most recent update to include Link. That completely changes how the game works. I’ve also had a great time racing against people in the Vs. mode even if I’ve had little luck winning.
5. Sekiro: Shadow’s Die Twice
youtube
This is the game that got me into From Software’s style of punishing combat. It took a while to win me over, but it did. I love its battles that force you to get creative with attacks and items. And I also love its world and grim characters.
4. Lonely Mountains: Downhill
Lonely Mountains: Downhill is exactly the kind of game I want to discover when I open up Xbox Game Pass. It’s a game about guiding a bicycle through a hilly obstacle course. And while it starts out laid back with the goal of just getting to the bottom, it quickly turns into a significant challenge where you need to get to the bottom as quickly as possible without wiping out too often. This leads you to searching out the plentiful shortcuts, which is a satisfying experience in itself.
3. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
youtube
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is exactly my kind of game. I jive with all of Respawn Entertainment’s design decisions. And then the studio also nailed the implementation of the Star Wars universe.
The game is an expert combination of Dark Souls combat and progression, Metroid Prime environments and exploration, and a sprinkle of Uncharted set pieces at the beginning and the end. And all of that worked for me. I especially love slowly pushing through a world, getting a new power, and then having an easier time working my way back out. And I am so impressed by the boss fights that always find a way to stay interesting and push the story and state of the world forward.
And then I totally fell in love with the characters. I especially appreciate the relationship between hero Cal Kestis and the Nightsister, Merrin. That friendship/budding romance was handled deftly and has me rooting for Cal, which is not where I thought I was going to end up when his adventure started.
Respawn nailed this game, and I am desperate to see a sequel.
I’ve gone back and forth about placing it as my No. 1 of the year, and I may regret leaving it at No. 3 once I actually publish this list.
2. Fire Emblem: Three Houses
I’ve played Fire Emblem: Three Houses for 90 hours. That’s for one playthrough. I guess some of that is idle time, but not much. Still, I think it’s a testament to how engaging that game’s characters, writing, and tactical battles are. I don’t have time to play games for 90 hours, and yet Fire Emblem proves that I still will for the right game.
This is another game that could easily end up as my No. 1 of the year.
1. Outer Wilds
Outer Wilds was such a surprise. It’s a game that is technically only 22 minutes long. But you’ll repeat those 22 minutes over and over until you discover all of the secrets contained within its clockwork solar system. When I look back, it’s amazing how many moments left me astonished and in awe.
At its core, Outer Wilds is a game about learning rules and then deploying that knowledge to solve larger and larger puzzles. Eventually, you will know enough to go from the beginning of the game to the end before your 22 minutes are up. And along the way, you’ll jump across the surface of the sun, ride debris beyond a planet’s atmosphere, and travel through a wormhole.
Outer Wilds is good enough to be my game of the year, but I had a pretty rough experience getting through the end. It was not a game I could play uninterrupted due to my many children, and that made it difficult to keep all of its secrets in my head at once. So I had to turn to guides for help enough that I didn’t get to experience the “aha!” moments for myself. I’m not gonna hold that against the game — except for on my personal GOTY list.

Games of the Year 2019
GOOD
Wargroove
Yoshi's Crafted World
Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit
Boxboy + Boxgirl
Puyo Puyo Champions
Dragon Quest Builders 2
Daemon X Machina
Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
Killer Queen Black
Luigi's Mansion 3
Pokemon: Sword & Shield
The games in this part of the list are in a weird kind of neutral zone—way too good to be left off the overall list, but not wholeheartedly recommended without at least one caveat. All are good, and most are probably worth your time, but each is missing a certain something to justifiably slot them into the upper echelons.
The one standout here is Link's Awakening—I couldn't justify moving it to the next tier up, as it's really just a straight remake of a decades-old Game Boy game—but good lord, what a remake it is. The original was my all-time favorite game until Breath of the Wild came out two years ago, and I played and beat this remake in less than a week. Seeing map areas and locales that I knew like the back of my hand remade in gorgeous tilt-shift HD was a real highlight this year.
RECOMMENDED
Tetris 99
Ape Out
Baba is You
Gato Roboto
Slay the Spire
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
Wilmot's Warehouse
Untitled Goose Game
Sayonara Wild Hearts
These are all fantastic games that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone. Tetris 99 came out of nowhere and sounded like a joke at first—Tetris but...battle royale?—but it just completely works, and the special events on various weekends this year always drew me back in.
None of the rest of the list was developed or published by Nintendo, but all appeared on the Switch—so much for the idea that Nintendo doesn't know how to work with third parties. Ape Out's core gameplay, visual aesthetic, and killer interactive soundtrack made for a great experience the first time, and an even better one on NG+. Baba is You took a very simple genre, made one slight tweak, and nourished that idea into 200+ levels of mind-bending puzzles. Wilmot's Warehouse used a similar push-block mechanic, but instead used it to create a game about organizing things—and for the right kind of weird person, of which I am one, this is an incredible game experience. Gato Roboto and Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night each successfully riffed on the Metroidvania genre in different ways, but with similarly fantastic results (although to be fair, the latter needed a late patch to justify its inclusion on this list).
Slay the Spire was a hands-down favorite. Deck-building games are a genre I've wanted to get into but never quite have—until now. Spire checked the same boxes in my brain that last year's Into the Breach did—your enemies show their intentions ahead of time, giving you as much time as you need to plot your strategy; and yet, one slightly undercooked move later and it all falls apart. I've been coming back to this one all year and, as someone who regularly undercooks their own moves, will likely continue to do into next year.
Untitled Goose Game was arguably more popular as a meme than as a game, but the relatively simple gameplay was buoyed by some of the most genuinely hilarious interactions I've ever experienced in a game. My 8 year old is still hiding behind corners, waiting to spring an unexpected HONK on her poor old dad.
Another game that succeeded almost despite its gameplay was Sayonara Wild Hearts. It's hard to describe this game—it's almost a rhythm game, but not really; it has a story, but it's ambiguous and none of the characters are even named; there's not much gameplay, but I wouldn't want to watch it passively as a movie—needless to say it's unlike anything I've ever played before. I finished it in two sessions back to back, and was completely enthralled by the colors, environments, the aforementioned ambiguous narrative—but mostly it was the music. Because make no mistake, this game has a goddamned tremendous soundtrack, and it carries through the whole experience. Actually, maybe I do know what kind of game this is—a video game LP.
ESSENTIAL
Mario Maker 2
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition
A big update, released a few months after it came out, single-handedly moved Mario Maker 2 up a tier. The game was already great—proving that even though the Wii U gamepad was the impetus for Mario Maker’s creation, it was not required for it to be fun—but the addition of online multiplayer firmly established that this was a must-have for the platform. Yes, building courses is still great, playing a seemingly infinite amount of user-made courses is great, and yeah, Nintendo even included about 100 of their own courses in a single player "story" mode this time—but it all pales in comparison to competitive, multiplayer Mario. I've referred to the mechanics of 2D Mario as a language one might learn to speak, and it's one that I'm personally fluent in; but now, for the first time, it's a language that I can converse in online with my friends.
We devoted an entire podcast episode to Fire Emblem: Three Houses for a good reason—for the first time, at least in the US, this entry in the Fire Emblem series can comfortably stand toe-to-toe with any other major first-party Nintendo release. Having been largely relegated to handhelds in the past, this entry finally matches the scope, production value, and polish of any other "big budget" Nintendo game on the Switch. Combat remains mostly unchanged, which is fine, but there are two main things that set this entry apart compared to its past. First, the setting of the school, with your character as the teacher, sets up a monthly calendar-based schedule of training students and then taking them onto the battlefield. This loop is addictive and lends itself to the second major change—the cast, namely your students, are some of the most fully fleshed out (and therefore the most agonizing to protect from permadeath) characters the series has ever seen—and this is a series with a tremendous backlog of great characters. I cared about every student in my class and was deeply invested in getting the best out of each and every one of them. That there are four story paths amongst the titular three houses adds a ton of replay value, and when all was said and done this missed out on GOTY by a hair.
Vanilla Dragon Quest XI came out on PS4 last year, but true heads knew that this was the version to wait for. The story goes that Satoru Iwata, before the Switch was even named the Switch, personally reached out to Square Enix and made one final request before passing away—release this game on our new console. For me, Dragon Quest (Dragon Warrior) and Nintendo go hand in hand, and this "S: Definitive Edition" was well worth the wait. The story is typical Dragon Quest—all charm and polish, not a ton of surprise or deep substance—but this Switch edition added to the base story, introduced a new mode where you visit each of the ten locales from previous games in the series, updated the much-maligned music from the original to a new fully-orchestrated score, and imported the Japanese-only 3DS's "2D Mode." It's a lot of game in one package, and I'm still working my way through the back-half of the game, but every hour I continue to spend with this game is a treat. You won’t play a more charming game all year.
Any of these, in a different year, could have been my GOTY.
GOTY
Super Smash Bros Ultimate
Alright let's get this out of the way first—technically this game came out in December of last year. It even made my "Essential" list last year. Here's what I said about it: "SSB Ultimate came on late but hit hard—I played it with friends every night for weeks after release. This one is gonna last well into next year and beyond."
Well that was an understatement. Well over 250 in-game hours later, no other game defined my 2019 like Super Smash Bros Ultimate. I continued playing this game online with friends nearly every night for roughly the first half of the year, and it's still not really out of the rotation. Part of that is due to just how much *game* is here—we mostly played it competitively, which is to say, no items, 1v1, etc. But there's also a robust single player mode, in-game events, balancing options that allow me to play it relatively competitively with my 8 year old, and of course we always have the option to turn everything on and go full-on party mode. Then throw in a new character roughly every other month (s/o to Hero and Terry, two of my favorites to play currently) plus a robust online community generating dialogue, gifs, and highlight videos on a nearly daily basis (s/o YEET Smash), and you have the recipe for a game that's going to hold my attention for the foreseeable future.
I could go on and on about the fan service, or about the impossibly good job Sakurai and co are doing balancing 80ish characters (plus item interactions), or about Nintendo finally starting to get serious about supporting a tournament community, but ultimately the decision to rank this one first comes down to this—2019 was a difficult year for me personally, but when I look back on it, the absolute fondest memories I have of playing games this year were playing Smash with my friends. It was true of Bloodborne in 2015, and it's true of Smash now.

Vote for Readers Choice & GOTY Nominations
December 16, 2019 9:16 AM EST
DualShockers’ Game of the Year 2019 is upon us. Check our nominations and vote for your favorite games in 2019.
Welcome back, everyone! This is resident DualShockers Editor-in-Chief, Lou Contaldi, and it is time for the annual bloodbath… err– celebrating the best and the brightest of gaming in 2019!
While it is tradition to hold a separate poll for Readers’ Choice for both Game of the Year 2019 and Most Anticipated Game of 2020, we are spicing things up with a few new ways this year: announcing our nominations for each category and giving you a way to participate in the DS staff polls.
Vote for Readers’ Choice 2019 Awards:
Without question, our community is the best part of DualShockers, so we (and the developers and publishers we chat to) know that the Reader’s Choice Award is one of the best annual honors to win. And, as always we are looking for your help in making that selection in one of gaming’s busiest years.
You’re given the ability to change your vote at any time before the cutoff time, which will be December 22nd, at 11:59:59 PM Pacific Time. People change their mind all the time, so we don’t see a reason why you wouldn’t be able to change your vote here.
Below, you’ll find a form to vote for your favorite game (you can find it here if you are on mobile). In order to limit spam and vote manipulation, you’ll be asked to log in to a google account if you aren’t already. If you don’t have one, making it is pretty easy and very quick.
In order to be eligible for Game of the Year, a game needs to have been released for the first time (unless it’s a remaster/remake) between December 10th, 2018 and December 15th, 2019. Expansions are not eligible. Early Access games that have moved out of early access this year (for instance Dead Cells) are considered 2019 releases.
While we love Japanese games, only releases in the West are eligible (to avoid games appearing for two years in a row). For instance. it wouldn’t make sense to ask you to vote for Persona 5: The Royal as Game of The Year, since most of you will play the Western version (Persona 5: Royal) in 2020. You’ll be able to vote for it in our Most Anticipated Game of 2020 – Reader’s Choice Award.
Asian market releases in English have been included where appropriate in case a western release is confirmed as not happening, or extremely unlikely.
As you’ll probably notice, the list is very long — though sorted alphabetically. While other outlets give you a narrowed down list for Game of the Year, we think it is better that all voices get heard — even niche games that may be ignored. If you notice a game is missing that you wanted to vote on, go ahead and let us know in the comment section and we will add it on.
You’ll also notice that there are plenty of games that didn’t review very well on the list. It’s not our place to tell you what you should or shouldn’t like. Yet, we apologize if we missed or forgot games that you might love. After all, we’re only human.
So, what are you waiting for? Get voting, and feel free to let us know your favorites in the comments:

DualShockers 2019 GotY Award Nominations and Vote
Now here comes the new part: not only will we be sharing our nominees for each category ahead of the vote, we want you all to be part of the decision-making.
Following a multi-week process of narrowing down on our nomination pool with both the DualShockers Staff and our Discord community, we have a tighter list of the games we are voting for in each category. Starting today, we will be tallying votes from both Staff and the Community. Each DualShockers Staff member will have one vote; comparatively, the Community will get a 10% stake in the final totals (at 3 points) for all of their leading contenders. No game will win without a clear majority (50.1%).
Voting cut-off for this initial vote is Wednesday, December 18 at 11:59:59 PM Pacific. In the instance that there is no clear majority (which will most certainly be the case), there will be a series of run-off elections happening exclusively on the DualShockers Discord! You can join those conversations by heading here: https://discord.gg/uKFUAxp
