“So there I was, in Walmart, of course,” Lucretia sighs, her head in Lup’s lap and her legs dangling off the side of the shitty couch. Barry’s cozily jammed in on Lup’s other side, the couch hardly the right shape or comfort level to accommodate all three of them, despite the fact that Taako was definitely crammed in there a moment ago. Who knows where he’s gotten off to. Kravitz tucks his legs up under him in his god-awful armchair and props his head up to listen, surprised at himself for being absorbed so easily into this friend group. He feels like an intruder, or a mimic, or some kind of fungus.

In a good way?

“And I was In the frozen aisle,”

“God forbid,” Lup says, teasingly. 

“Let me get out my story,” Lucretia says, stifling laughter. 

“And she bought fourteen Kid Cuisines, and a Teenage Mutant Neetle Teetles Pizza,” Barry adds, making her snicker. 

“Listen!” Lucretia clears her throat, trying to maintain some level of seriousness, but her usual composure just isn’t there tonight, as late as it is. It’s wild seeing this warm, vulnerable side of her. “I was in the frozen aisle in Walmart and I was trying to get something for dinner, and the man in front of me was taking his sweet time, and then this song came on the radio–don’t ask me what song, listen, don’t. I don’t remember. But-” she smiles, remembering. Kravitz feels surprisingly fond of her in this moment. 

“But it’s a bouncy song, right, something you could really jam to.” 

“Glad I’m not the only one who sounds like an old man when I use slang,” Kravitz mutters. Lup and Barry snicker. 

“And he- he’s still looking at the frozen food, but he starts bouncing his ass cheeks-”

Everybody struggles to hold back laughter. 

“And listen-” Lucretia tries to restrain herself, but she can’t stop smiling. “I’m not much of a manliker. But it was so cute. He turns around and sees me waiting and apologizes to me, and I wanted to say no, no, go on, you carry on bouncing that ass to the music, sir. He wasn’t any older than I am, and he looked so tired, and he just-” She reaches for the ceiling, grasping like a warm cat considering making biscuits for the evening. “It was sweet. Normally I document the profound and profane, but this moment was just so…alive. People, you know?”

“I dunno, I am a documented man-liker, and that’s cute as hell,” Lup muses, through laughter. “Too bad he eats frozen food. But I can fix him. TAAKO!” Lup hollers. “TAAKO, CUTE OR NOT?”

Fellow noted man-liker Taako pokes his head in from the other room. 

“WHAT,” he hollers back, even though he’s close enough now he doesn’t need to shout. It’s not a big apartment, especially with all of them squished in here like a pile of puppies. 

“Rate this rando on a scale of one to ten,” Lup demands. Lucretia covers a laugh. Kravitz’s eyes go to Barry, who looks amused but a little strained. 

“Not now,” Taako says, still a full twenty too loud. “I’m drinking shampoo to prove a point.”

“You’re-” Lup cracks up. “What now?” 

“You’ve got to listen when people talk, snorkel-brains,” Taako says, sort of affectionately. “Magnus was- MAGNUS, explain it.”

Magnus pokes his head out too, and Merle follows, not unlike a cartoon. Davenport is somewhere out of frame, probably folding his arms, but not not participating in shenanigans. 

“So listen- listen-” Magnus says, holding the shampoo in one hand and a towel in the other. “You put some on your lips and you’re supposed to be able to blow bubbles! But so far-”

“So far it feels like we’ve gotten in trouble for swears,” Merle says, nodding.

“Damn,” Lucretia says. 

“Fuck,” Barry agrees. 

“You guys saw that online, or what?” Lup shakes her head. “Stupids.” 

“It’s gonna be cool!” Magnus insists. 

“I think it’s horseshit,” Taako counters. “What’s this about boyliking.” His eyes go conspicuously to Kravitz. Is it warm in here suddenly? Maybe they should get the climate control looked at. 

“There was a guy in the grocery store bouncing his ass cheeks to the music, and Lucretia is wrapped up in how profound it was,” Barry says, not critically. 

“It was profound!” Lucretia insists. “It was nice. People should appreciate life more. I should appreciate life more. It’s short, isn’t it?”

“Debatable,” both elves say in unison. 

“Listen-” Lucretia sits up, swinging her legs back in front of her. She looks a little dizzy, but powers through. “Little moments like this are poetry.”

“Dear diary,” Taako intones, “Saw a guy bounce his ass. You might think it would be crass. But instead I want to say. I want to live another day.” 

“Amen,” Merle says sweetly.

“Don’t be dorks,” Lup defends, patting Lucretia’s back. “It’s a good little moment of being a living creature.”

“Sure,” Taako says. “And so’s this.” And he rubs shampoo on his lips, and then blows a ridiculous stream of bubbles, and everybody cheers. Lucretia’s story gets a little lost from there, because everyone has to try the shampoo thing, but it sort of sticks with Kravitz. 

Poetry. He hopes she knows he listened.

okay hear me out. THB already have their roles ofc. i think i’d keep griffin as barry, though choosing between him and lup is so incredibly hard. murph should play davenport. then brennan keeps either lup or lucretia, with either aabria as lucretia or emily as lup. do you see my vision

i see your vision. i feel it. def agree on griffin as barry since he's like basically a self insert. aabria did such a good lucretia in imbalance but i dont think i could resist a lup emily like holy SHIT. shes so chaotic and perfect. anon you are so real for this.

i do think id lean in the emily direction, just bc between lup and lucretia, i think lup makes a better PC (extremely active, can drive plots as a character) and lucretia would make a more fitting NPC (being either shy/solitary or later authoritative, good gm tool)

If someone ever makes another 'which of the IPRE crew are you' quizzes, one of the questions should be, "which colored orb in the final fight do you attack first?" (The correct answer here is the Green one that heals, and that's should give me points to Lup or Davenport. Lucretia and Barry would prioritize the blue shield orb first, and THB would do the regular spell casting ones).

okay actually i’ve been thinking about this au all night and consider a balance au where everyone is just sort of... jumbled around

in this lucretia’s plan goes off almost without a hitch. Lup dodged the knife, got the gauntlet put away, and was able to come back. She’s there when they forget, and even though Barry is panicking because he doesn’t know who she is it’s too late by the time he realizes what’s wrong, and he doesn’t die (yet, anyway).

No, Lup stays, but they haven’t seen Magnus in over a year now. He went out to place his relic, and he just... never came back. It leaves an emptiness in the crew, even as they celebrate their plan working, watch as the hunger doesn’t arrive. It worked, so his relic must still be out there. He must still be out there somewhere. 

Magnus’s absence is another reason why Lucretia feels she needs to enact her plan. One of the relics took him immediately, how can they call that a success? Still, by the time she starts he’s already been gone for over a year, there isn’t quite that same urgent search as there had been for Lup. She forces herself to take her time, to be as careful as possible. She can edit Davenport’s life around the mission better, and even he can be sent out to the world. 

The one, tiiiiny problem is when she goes to place Merle, and he... didn’t forget. He asks if this is some kind of prank they’re pulling on him, real funny guys, and eventually admits that okay, sometimes he uses water from Fisher’s tank to water his plants because it’s closer than the kitchen and maybe sometimes when he’s tired he drinks from his watering can and sometimes those two things overlap. 

So Lucretia explains her plan, explains that this is temporary, that the relics weren’t working and her shield will, and she begs him not to stop her and he doesn’t. Maybe she’s right, maybe the others do deserve a break, but she’s not getting out of this so easy missy. Oh no, ain’t no reason to do any of this without backup.  

They set the others up with their lives. Taako and Lup with a cooking show, Davenport with his own boat and a small but hardworking crew, and Barry... Barry’s hard to place. She had hoped to place him working at a school, maybe a university, but with the mission erased so much of his knowledge of the arcane and sciences were as well. 

Merle’s the one who suggests putting him up at a temple. The creep always did like weird dead things, he is a weird dead thing, he’ll be right at home. Lucretia supposes that’ll work and sets him up at a temple of the Raven Queen. 

It doesn’t last long. Maybe a bit longer than it should have, but Kravitz doesn’t think anyone would blame him for not looking for liches in their own temples. It doesn’t take much to kill him, but once he’s a lich he’s able to get away. To realize what’s going on, and to try to set it right. 

He finds the cloning pod, sets up a coin recording and gives himself a few simple instructions. He has a wife, he needs to find her no matter what the cost and find a way to get back the memories that were lost. Also, if a handsome man in a black suit with raven motifs shows up run away please. 

Davenport’s time on the sea is as far as he can remember, the happiest he’s ever been. This is what he was born to do, what his life should be. He cares about his crew and they care about him and they take care of each other. 

One day he pushes too far though. He always wanted to go further, to have more dangerous adventures, to push the limits and come out on top. Some of those limits are there for a reason though. When they end up being attacked, Davenport almost manages to out run the pirates. He always expects his ship to be able to do more than it should though, and the old girl finally gives out on him. 

He’s thrown overboard, small enough to be able to hide among the debris from the ship, to cling to a piece of wood and wet cloth until they leave. The rest of his crew isn’t so lucky. Once he finally manages to get back to shore, Davenport decides to take a break on the ocean for a while. 

Sizzle It Up with Lup and Taako is great. They’re a well oiled machine, and they’re well on their way to make something of themselves. They have an audience that loves them, their cookbook sales are great, they’re happy. Everything is perfect. 

And then one day Lup wakes up and Taako is just... gone. There’s a note on the table saying he went out for supplies for their show tonight, and she doesn’t think anything of it. Not until the hours pass, and he’s still not there. Not until she goes to town, and no one has seen him all day. It doesn’t make any sense, she went to sleep and her brother was here and now he’s not and he’s not dead, he can’t be dead, she has to find him. 

She puts the show on hiatus and starts to look. 

After Barry, Kravitz was already on the look out. Finding Taako had been a bit more intentional, and he thought he would be more prepared when one of these things turned into a lich, but Taako was surprising in a whole new way. As soon as he fell and the lich form arose, he wasn’t going in for a fight. No, he wanted to make a deal. 

The end of the world was coming, and they all just forgot. Really, it was a simple compromise. Kravitz leaves his sister and Barry alone. He stops trying to kill his fucking family, and Taako will get this whole mess sorted out. He’ll find Lucretia and Merle and make them stop, make sure the hunger doesn’t destroy this plane, and won’t cause anymore undead problems.

Kravitz agrees, mostly on the behest of the Lady of Fate, but Taako needs to work with them. Taako gets rid of the body, he doesn’t want Lup to find it and get upset, and he tells himself it’ll be quick. As soon as she remembers she’ll understand him leaving, she would have done the same. 

Lup, Barry, and Davenport end up being hired by one Gundren Rockseeker, on the recommendation of one of his cousins. They join the Bureau of Balance, and even though the Director is standoffish her kindness shines through, and even though Merle is... odd there’s something comforting about him. They like it here. 

Magnus has been in Refuge for about a week. Magnus was just stopping through, thankful for the rest after Jack and June found him in the desert. He didn’t plan on staying for very long. This bubble makes it hard to leave, but he’s only been gone for about a week. He can’t remember where he was supposed to go at this point, so it must not have been that important. 

Besides, it’s only been about a week.

ive been trying to figure out why kravitz didn’t go after lucretia and davenport since he clearly knew where they were (or at least he knew how to get to the moonbase) and i’ve arrived at three conclusions

after all the stuff in ck/11th hour kravitz took the thb’s word that they had no recollection of all the deaths and didn’t know what that was about and just didn’t pursue it after RQ let the b.o.b. off the hook

due to a bureaucratic error lucretia and davenport (and maybe lup and barry) ended up being some other reaper’s bounty; they were cleared along with the thb a littler higher up than kravitz’s paygrade and he actually didn’t have a clue any of them had a death toll in the first place

krav is just.... really gay so he ignored it in favour of dating taako

TAZ: Balance Crossovers I’ve made

Trapped in Active Depart - The Murderbot Diaries crossover. The Starblaster is secretly sentient, and they’ve contracted a bot-human construct for additional mission security.

The Taako Parable - The Stanley Parable crossover. Barry makes a deal with the Temporal Chalice for infinite chances, but it goes wrong. Taako remembers resets; Barry doesn’t.

Good Adventures - Good Omens crossover. The Starblaster lands on Earth and finds a whole separate apocalypse going on.

Omen Zone - Good Omens crossover (2!). Kravitz and Barry are an angel and a demon stationed on Earth.

Pokémon Century - Seven explorers voyage on the Starblaster from their destroyed home world. Oh, and they bring their Pokémon with them.

Double Trouble - Barry, Lup, and Davenport are on a very important mission: to steal Taako’s Raichu.

The Unsleeping City AU - Modern hidden magic AU; Lup finds herself part of this secret world by discovering she’s a very important sorcerer.

Phineas and Ferb AU - Lup prevents Barry’s evil plots to destroy the moon. Kravitz tries to bust Tres Horny Boys for defying death.

The Good Place AU - THB (and others) find themselves dead.

Hadestown - Just thoughts on a song re: Barry and Lup.

i like to think barry’s not just the lover bc of lup, but also bc he’s the glue of the ship. i like to think he was the first non-lup member of the crew to bring taako out of his shell, the first to befriend lucretia and make her feel like she belonged, the first to talk to davenport as a friend and not a captain, the first to ask merle about his faith, the first to sit with magnus and eat hard candy and talk about home. 

the others hold the crew together in their own ways but it’s barry who always provides a listening ear, or comfort when anyone needs it, and he’s just someone steady that they can lean on, so much so that he takes it upon himself to make sure they always escape (and there’s something to be said about the fact that lup doesn’t let him carry that weight alone, just like she comforted him when he usually did the comforting even very early in their journey).

and because he’s a lich powered by love. like, it makes sense for lup, she’s got two super powerful anchors. she and barry love each other so much, and on a ship powered by love she and her brother were chosen probably in part because of their bond. but i don’t believe that barry could sustain himself solely with lup as an anchor, especially if she needed more than him as well. i like to think he got days from all of the crew, and thoughts of his entire family keeps him alive (or undead) for all those years.

and i think it’s appropriate that barry not only remembers everything but that he’s the one who gets the family back together. he’s the one that first signals to taako that the umbrastaff is more precious to him than he remembers. he has thb break into the moonbase and inoculate themselves. he commands davenport to drink. barry was the one who worked tirelessly to get his family back together because he’s the strong, stable glue that they can rely on to keep them together.
